We are very excited to be holding our Memorial Day Parade, Ceremony and Festivities this year on May 30. The parade will feature a variety of participants including: Camp Hill American Legion Post #43, Lawnton American Legion Post #998 Color Guard, Camp Hill Marching Band, Camp Hill Borough Council & School Board Members. Funktion and Ramblin Ramparts Dixieland Bands are returning again this year. Numerous civic organizations will also participate. Our Parade Marshall is Commander Serfass, who not only served our country but also currently serves as Superintendent of Camp Hill School District.Commander Serfass is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics.His postgraduate degrees include a Master’s in Public Administration from Shippensburg University in 1993, which he earned while studying global security affairs and strategic leadership at the United States Army War College, Carlisle. He also earned a Master’s in Management from Troy University in 1996, and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Lehigh University in 2005. Commander Serfass is a retired United States Naval Officer. His twenty years of service to our country culminated with leadership tours of duty as Commanding Officer of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet’s Assault Craft Unit, Chief Staff Officer of a major amphibious warfare command and Executive Officer of the USS Saginaw during the first gulf war. As a commissioned U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer, Commander Serfass conducted multi-national operations overseas during the Cold War, Operation Desert Storm, the Bosnia Conflict, Arctic Operations, U.S. embassy evacuations, and several freedom of the seas and humanitarian exercises. He

also served on the staff of the Commander of the U.S. Naval Forces Atlantic as the anti-surface warfare officer. In this role, Commander Serfass provided logistical and qualifications oversight for the Harpoon, Tomahawk and gunnery weapons systems for the three hundred ships of the Atlantic Fleet. Throughout his career he trained countless men and women in the performance of their duties in the skilled trades while sustaining exceptional rates of operational mission accomplishments. Commander Serfass also meritoriously served our country’s military-connected youth as the Principal of Schools in Germany, Spain, and Italy. He successfully led each of these U.S. Department of Defense public schools (K-12) that serve the children of our military personnel stationed overseas. He presently serves his community as the President of the Hershey Aquatic Club and member of Rotary International. We look forward to hearing his patriotic message. Also as part of the ceremony will be student speaker, Nathaniel Ebeling, a senior at Camp Hill High School. The Drum Major is Leo Chapman. Taps and Echo will be performed by Katie Drawbaugh and Gavin Davis. After the ceremony, all are welcome to come to the festivities which will be take place in Willow Park. There will be a bounce house, Bubble Magician, and organizations selling food. The High School Jazz Band will perform for us at 1 p.m. We hope to see you all there.

P u b l i c Wo r k s COMPOST SITE UPDATE The Borough compost site has a new layout and hours of operation. It is open 7 days a week from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm. The facility may close at any time for material processing or due to a lack of operational space. Mulch loading service are available on Monday’s and Friday’s only from 7:30 am to 8:30 am. Loading will end on Friday, October 14th. Please check the website for more information on the compost facility. STREET SWEEPING Sweeping will take place the day AFTER your regular trash collection day on the 2nd and 4th weeks of the month. Please avoid placing gras clippings, tree limbs or any other debris in the leaf piles. Leaf piles found to contain these items will not be collected. Property owners are required to maintain trees the overhang the roadway to a minimum of 12 feet above the street. If branches fronting your property do not meet the above requirement the street will not be swept, and you may be cited under the property maintenance code.

WELCOME OUR NEW CODES OFFICER We welcome Colton Weichman to the Borough staff as our Code Enforcement/ Zoning Officer. Colton is originally from Weatherly, PA. He graduated from Lock Haven University in 2015 with a degree in Actuary Science. Colton has worked in building inspection and property maintenance enforcement in Hazleton, Harrisburg, and Carlisle. In his spare time, Colton enjoys reading, working out, and exploring local restaurants. SPRING & SUMMER FRIENDLY REMINDERS: • Shrubbery shall not grow into a public right of way. We want to be sure our sidewalks are fully open and accessible so that pedestrians can safely pass without walking in the street. • Grass and weeds shall be maintained and no higher than 6”. Please plan accordingly for out-of-town trips and vacations. Ask a friend to mow or if you look on our website under Community and Home Services you can find a list of landscapers who have helped residents in the past. • Garbage and recycling shall be maintained in a sanitary manner and receptacles are to be placed at the curb and brought back in a timely manner. This applies to all residents, including tenants who rent. All trash should be placed in an approved container that has a lid. Garbage bags should not be stacked outside, which can attract vermin and other pests. The accepted practice is that trash and recycling should be set out the afternoon/ evening the day before pickup. Once pickup occurs, return receptacles back to the property within a day.

• Animal waste shall be routinely and promptly picked up in your yard and all public spaces. • All sidewalks must be compliant with the Borough Code (Ordinance 1-2018 Amending Chapter 176 Streets & Sidewalks of Borough Code). It is the property owner’s responsibility to be sure their sidewalks and curbs are compliant with this ordinance. There is a spec sheet online and in the Borough office that lists all requirements. Sidewalk and curb repairs require zoning permit applications. • Zoning, and sometimes building, permits are required for structures including fences, swimming pools exceeding 24 inches (even inflatable), sheds, garages, patios, decks, gazebos, pergolas, signs, and sunrooms. Any structure that you will be adding on your property, even temporarily, will require at least a zoning permit. Applications are available on our website or at the Borough office. • Shade trees are governed by our Shade Tree Commission. Any tree that is within the right-of-way of the streets and highways in the Borough is subject to review. The Commission meets once a month to review applications. Please be sure to submit and plan accordingly for your shade trees. Tree work requiring permits includes any type of pruning, cutting branches, planting, or removal of trees. • All landlords should be aware of your responsibilities. The 2015 International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC) puts most of the property responsibility on the property owner, not on the tenant. Even though a lease may state it is the tenant’s

responsibility, enforcement notices will be sent to the owner, unless otherwise noted in the 2015 IPMC. All rentals must have an up to date completed rental registration, submitted to the Borough office on a yearly basis. The registration form can be found on our website.

LION’S CLUB

As spring has sprung, it is good to be able to return to routine life. We began with our annual Pancake Jamboree and are extremely grateful to all who supported our event. As we move on through the year, we will be selling hot dogs at the annual Memorial Day event. They are very tasty and the price is definitely right. If you have a high school senior who has plans of attending HAAC, be advised

Our only goal is to try to preserve/ improve Camp Hill’s water, air, land, and flora. Call Penn Waste at 717767-4456 to arrange. SIMPLER-SMARTER RECYCLING If your recycling tote is less than half filled, please consider placing it on the curb for collection less frequently. This practice will conserve both resources and time. CATALOGS & MAGAZINES - Do you receive 5 or more glossy publications per week? At this rate, you receive a minimum of 20 monthly and 240 annually. On a street of 10 houses, the publications total a minimum of 50 weekly, 200 monthly, and 2,400 annually. Please consider saving the publications and periodically (no pun intended :) recycling them at the Upper Allen Elementary School, 1790 S Market Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055).The large recycling receptacle is located at the back of the parking lot. The proceeds from the recycling benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania.

We meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month September – May at 7 pm at the Borough Building. Each meeting includes a brief business meeting, a guest speaker or entertainment, and socializing/refreshments. We additionally offer a monthly newsletter, as well as book discussion, pinochle, and outings throughout the month. We welcome visitors and new members. HISTORICAL SOCIETY

CAMP HILL HAS ALWAYS LOVED A PARADE Through many of the mid-decades of the 1900’s, Doc Lawton hosted friends and neighbors to sit in his yard (and eat doughnuts made by the lady a few doors up on the other side of 23rd Street!) Folks stood on the sidewalk, too, just as they do now – just as you will soon! Shortly after World War II, the mailmen even participated in our Fourth of July parade. Parades of that era seemed to march west-to-east along Market Street. I’m not sure just where they began or ended, but most of the photos we have are passing by 23rd Street. Town children marched in many a parade, keeping in tidy lines as they waved small flags exuberantly. Later parades regrouped children into activity groups, such as Boy and Girl Scouts. The High School Band has participated as long as we can remember. They used to march in their uniforms, no matter how hot the day! This photo came from a newspaper article

MAY 14, JUNE 11, AUGUST 13 and SEPTEMBER 10 Hello Camp Hill Neighbors, The anticipated aroma of chicken from our grills will soon be in the air! We are having 4 separate dates that are stated in the header above. These events will start at 11:00 am, and 800 dinners will be served on a first come/first served basis. A drivethru will be set up on Walnut Street in front of the Fire House. The price of each dinner is $10, which includes ½ chicken, baked potato, applesauce, roll and butter. After paying all the vendors, we channel our profits directly towards the maintenance and updating of our equipment, technology, and education, to ensure the safety of all residents. The cost of running a first class fire company is staggering but a necessity in our ever changing community. We are an all-volunteer fire company. Our men and women train every Monday evening at 7:00 pm. If you are interested in becoming involved, please stop by! We are always looking for volunteers! Parade eventually became the Memorial Day Parade. My Dad suggested to me that more people were home in Camp Hill for Memorial Day than later in the summer when so many Camp Hill people migrated to Stone Harbor and thereabouts.

WOMEN’S CLUB

The Camp Hill Woman’s Club, established in 1950, is a philanthropic and social organization of women from Camp Hill and the surrounding area. Our object is to raise money through various fundraisers, all of which we donate to local charities. Recently we’ve raised funds through homemade lasagna dinners, homemade chili, soup sales and fashion shows.

Tennis Membership Information Tennis membership may be purchased by Camp Hill Borough residents, property owners and business owners. Memberships is non-transferable and fee is per household. Membership Fee$ 30.00 per household. Forms are available on our website and at the Borough Office. The courts are accessible with your Siebert Park stadium access card; access card applications are available at the Borough Administrative Office. Membership is effective for the calendar year: January through December. Fees are not prorated; early registration is strongly recommended. Parking on the grass near the tennis courts is prohibited. Violators will be fined. Parking is available next to the municipal swimming pool. Members are required to close the security gate when entering and leaving the courts. Tennis court users must produce their access card to validate their membership when requested by the Police Department or Borough Staff. When members leave the courts, their guests must depart as well. Failure to follow these rules will result in membership revocation and forfeiture of membership fee.

No One Should Be Hungry! The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will be giving food to all qualified Camp Hill residents in need of food assistance at the Christian Life Assembly Church, 2645 Lisburn Rd. in Lower Allen Twp. In March during the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society Conference, there was an Awards Banquet on March 31, 2022. Camp Hill Borough earned three different awards. We received an Excellence in Parks and Recreation for the Parade of Lights for Toys for Tots Event, the Green and Sustainable Parks Award for Willow Park and Camp Hill Borough resident Bill Forrey received the Community Champion Award. Information about Access to Siebert Park Stadium To obtain access to the stadium when it is not being used for an event, you need fill out an application at the Borough Office. One application per family. To enter the Siebert Park Stadium, enter near the Athletic House. Swipe your card and push on the access gate. It will turn to let one person enter at a time. If you lose your card, you need to notify the Borough immediately, so it can be deactivated. Replacement cards, are $5.00 each. Wall of Honor Celebration Join us this May 18 to recognize Dan Fickes, Class of `81, and Jill Williamson, one of Camp Hill’s most dedicated volunteers, as our newest Wall of Honor recipients. The Wall of Honor pays tribute to graduates and staff who inspire our students, faculty and community members with achievements in their chosen careers and their contributions to their communities. Jill has showcased a long and keen interest in Camp Hill’s schools. One of her many educational achievements: volunteering for over 30 years on the Camp Hill School Board, where her guidance

and leadership impacted thousands of students. She has also been active in the Camp Hill Recreation Commission and the Fredricksen Library, among other endeavors, and was awarded the Camp Hill Volunteer of the Year Award in 2015. Dan was inspired by his introduction to theater during his high school years in Camp Hill to pursue a career in television production. He worked at several Boston television stations as a producer and director before starting his own production company, Ocean One Productions Inc. Over the last three decades, Dan and his company have worked for nearly every major broadcast outlet around the world! The Wall of Honor award ceremony, part of Senior Recognition, will be held at 7pm at the Pollock Arts Center.

The Lion Pride Society Business Circle This Spring, we’re thrilled to launch The Lion Pride Society. This new and exciting program is exactly what it sounds like: a recognition that our schools and our students are a point of pride in our community! Junior Achievement day was also held at the High School to help 11th and 12th grade students prepare resumes and learn about job interviews, and pick up tips for handling other, post-high school tasks. Thank you Camp Hill Borough for sponsoring these civic programs for students in grades K - 12. because every day is a new day. Every day, you see a different kid pick something up. And maybe you can connect with a different kid in a way that might not be of the greatest interest for you, but it is for that kid. And it kind of draws them in and gets them more interested in what they are doing. CHAPLIN: Great! Can you tell me what getting the Lego Robotics Kits will mean for your classroom? BARROWS: We are working with Lego robotics on coding projects that we do every year with the 8th grade students. It’s the basic skills that they need to introduce the project. It’s not an in-depth, going-into-coding yet, but hopefully we can take them and increase that. And maybe push the 8th grade project down to maybe the 6th grade level, and then do some more advanced coding with them by 7th grade and 8th grade. The Lion Foundation’s intern, Emma Chaplin (‘22), recently interviewed Scott Barrows, the Math Foundations teacher at the Camp Hill Middle School. Mr. Barrows recently received one of our Great Idea grants to purchase Lego Robotics Kits. CHAPLIN: Hi Mr. Barrows, thank you for meeting with me today. First, I’d love to know: what is your favorite thing about your job? BARROWS: I like the interactions with the kids the best! It keeps me interested,

CHAPLIN: And how many students are in your classrooms are currently using the Lego Robotics Kits? BARROWS: They are on the wheel cycle, so I see them for about 7 weeks. CHAPLIN: How has the funding from The Lion Foundation made your classroom better? BARROWS: I’ve gotten a lot of funding from The Lion Foundation, so I’m very appreciative of them. We had iPads that we got in here, and they were really helpful for differentiating instruction to the kids. My classroom is a little bit different from

other classes in that we’re trying to address each individual kid and not necessarily the group as a whole. With Lego Robotics, it can do the same thing — each group of two or three kids gets their own robot, and they code differently, and you see how they can accomplish the same tasks. **This interview was lightly edited for space.

Congratulations to students, staff, administration and volunteers for the historic night of Mini-THON, which raised a record-breaking $105,720.14! This year marked the return to the Camp Hill School District’s Mini-THON event in person after being held virtually last spring. A huge thank you to all of the teachers, support staff, and administrators that participated in this event and made it all possible! The proceeds of the Camp Hill Mini-THON are donated to the Four Diamonds charity for childhood cancer.
