Letter from the president and board chair Facing multiple sclerosis can feel daunting, depressing, and at times devastating. It can change your life, and the lives of those who care about you. Being part of the MS movement, on the other hand, is one of the most positive, uplifting, and inspirational things we can imagine. It can also change your life, and the lives of those around you – for the better. This has been an amazing year in the MS movement, and in this special Annual Report edition of the MS Connection, you will see why we have so much to be grateful for. The stories in these pages are “thank you” notes to you from people whose lives have been impacted by the National MS Society. We would like to add our voices to the chorus of gratitude. If you volunteered at the MS Society, made a financial donation, participated in an event, built awareness, or became an MS activist, THANK YOU. If you joined the movement by attending an educational program or peer support group, THANK YOU. The MS Society is proud to serve the 6,900 people in our area living with MS and their loved ones. We hope that you will enjoy the uplifting stories on these pages, and perhaps be inspired to join the MS movement in a new way in the coming year or recruit one more friend to help us create a world free of MS. thank you for helping me...

pursue my college education

By caterina fedyk

As a three-year-old, I had a simple, positive outlook on everything. Life was easy. I had tea parties with friends, an adorable dog and an unlimited supply of crayons. Then my mom was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Being so young, I could not say the name, much less understand what it meant. So what if Mom can’t play in the backyard? I was the only kid with a sandbox out on the deck. She was there, helping me build sandcastles, and that was all that mattered. When Mom could no longer drive, we had “dates,” traveling in a community van. Kids laughed as she was raised on the lift, but we were together and that was all that mattered. Throughout school, I was “the girl whose mom is in a wheelchair.” She managed to be the best Room Mother every year and attended every one of my events. My mom was always there, and that was all that mattered. I hardly know how to properly thank you and the National MS Society for awarding me the Presidential Top Scholar Award and giving me the opportunity to go to college and make my family proud. In high school, I worried I would be restricted to a local or community college because of my family’s financial and medical situations, but I persistently worked to improve my grade point average and immerse myself in any possible activity around my school or community, on the slight chance I may be eligible for a scholarship like this. Because of your generosity supporting the

National MS Society, I will have countless other opportunities to grow as a strong and independent woman at Ball State University. I hope to be able to give such a beautiful gift as yours some day. This college education will allow me to expand my knowledge of Caterina fedyk won the the world, gain National MS society insights into the presidential top scholar human condition, award, a four-year and develop scholarship. She attends ball as an effective state university. photojournalist. Family and friends joke around, asking if I will be the next issue reporter Eddie Adams or work for National Geographic. I typically just roll my eyes and say, “yeah, right,” but in my heart, I always answer ‘yes.’ At the moment, they are just pipe dreams, of course, but I know if they ever happen, they would not have been possible without your help.

in 2012 the chapter awarded $41,000 in scholarships to 21 new college students. nationally, the society awarded over $1 million to 646 scholars in 2012.

take control of my ms By joanne herzog

When I was diagnosed with MS 21 years ago, I was in very good physical condition and had a very healthy and active lifestyle. With my MS came numbness in my right leg. It began as tingling, then I had to really drag it behind me and I couldn’t walk. I tried to stand up at one point, lost my balance and fell through a glass coffee table. My father has Parkinson’s disease and dementia which takes a lot out of me physically, mentally and financially. I felt like I needed something therapeutic for my mind and body. So I joined Club Fitness about a year ago. Initially when I went back to the gym I wasn’t really getting any results. I was doing a little bit of cardio. I didn’t know what to do and I was afraid I was going to get hurt. Then in March I reached out to the Gateway Area Chapter to see if they could possibly help me. They said they could help me pay for a personal trainer which has made a world of difference. My trainer has helped me in all sorts of areas: posture, balance, injury prevention, pain relief, modified exercises I can safely do at home. She actually has

The pain relief has been amazing. the Chapter’s wellness I could handle the Program has helped Joanne month-to-month herzog work with a personal gym membership trainer and take control of her ms. cost, but I couldn’t afford the personal training. It wasn’t even an option. I feel like it’s changed my life and it’s really saved my life in a lot of ways which is way I’m so thankful to the National MS Society. I’ve never really asked for help before and it was really hard to say I need help. It took a lot for me to ask for help. Through the process I was treated with kindness and respect. I’m a better person and in a better place. It’s not only made a profound difference on me but in the lives of my family and loved ones. It’s made me better and stronger. My dad needs me and with the Chapter helping me I’m better able to help and support him. I am so grateful to the Chapter for helping me have a little bit more control.

advance ms research

By dr. laura piccio

I would like to express my gratitude to the National MS Society and to all donors, fundraisers and volunteers that in all their different ways are supporting the NMSS. I have a very strong connection to the NMSS which has had, and still has, a huge impact on my training and my career. When I first came to the United States from Italy, I was awarded a fellowship from the NMSS under the mentorship of Dr. Anne Cross at the John L. Trotter MS Center in St Louis. During that time I had the opportunity to learn a lot about MS and how to address important research questions which are to understand MS causes and to identify potential effective treatments.

Dr. laura piccio’s career has been closely tied to the national ms society. in the role of metabolism on modulating inflammatory and immune responses.

After my fellowship, I was honored to be the recipient of the Harry Weaver Neuroscience award which is given by the NMSS to young scientists to pursue MS related research as independent investigators. This allowed me to become a faculty member at Washington University in St Louis and to develop my own research ideas.

Again, the NMSS has been instrumental in the development of this research direction which was possible thanks to some pilot funding from them. I have a genuine commitment to the MS cause and I share this with many of my colleagues because we think that our research is changing the lives of people with MS. I feel that the NMSS is a key to keep us all together and motivated to reach our common goal which is to eventually end this disease.

Most of the projects I have been working on are trying to unveil the immunological mechanisms underlying MS. In particular we are interested

in 2012 the chapter invested more than $1.1 million in cutting-edge ms research.

reconnect with my family I have been living with MS since 2008, but haven’t really reached out until this year. In 2012, my husband and I were having some troubles in our marriage so we decided to attend the Chapter’s Spring Rendezvous program. We needed to do something to save our marriage. It worked.

MS disease progression can be a very difficult hurdle. I began using a cane for stability in 2002 and it worked pretty well for several years. Then I went from a cane to a walker and then to a power chair in just a few short months. I learned to live with each of these adjustments and I could still access the shower from the power chair using suction cup grab bars. But this was becoming dangerous so I contacted the Chapter and learned that I qualified for financial assistance to help fund a bathroom modification. The process is time consuming, but well worth it. When all was said and done, we ended using our savings as well to get our bathroom modified. This project turned out very beautiful and very necessary. The shower and toilet were very close together which made it difficult to navigate. So we were able to move the toilet from the shower room to the vanity area with grab bars in both rooms. A higher vanity was installed that leaves room for a wheel chair. The shower room has a tiled floor and walls which makes it easier to navigate and the entry door was widened. My wife, Ranell and I are very happy with the outcome of our new master bathroom. I even

I was so thankful I began the process when I began having more and more trouble doing simple daily activities. The National MS Society helped us make our dream come true and accessibility a reality. I encourage everyone I meet with MS to contact their local chapter for assistance. Thank you again for your continued support in fighting this disease. The Chapter is my first call whenever I need information about the latest advancements.

in 2012, the chapter invested nearly $15,000 in helping people like james make modifications to make their homes safer and more accessible.

MS can be hard on a marriage. Talking with others who have MS and who are caregivers gave my husband and me a new outlook on life and our relationship. We also met another couple and now they are our best friends. We help each other cope with MS and its challenges, but most importantly, we sit, laugh, and have fun with life. In the fall, I was able to bring my daughter along to the Touch of Nature Family Weekend. Before this weekend, she did not understand what I was going through. After meeting other people with MS, hearing their stories, and gaining a new perspective on the disease, she now helps me out a lot more. She takes me to doctor appointments and tells me to rest when she sees me having difficulty. She acknowledges the disease, but she also acknowledges that MS doesn’t define me. These family programs offered by the Chapter have changed our lives. They’ve saved my marriage, helped me connect with my daughter on a better level, and made me realize how a positive attitude can really

I would like to thank all involved for making everything possible for myself and my family. Volunteers, donors, fundraisers, staff, participants, and friends; you have inspired me to keep fighting. When I feel better, I would love to volunteer for the Society and give back. Until then, I look forward to this coming Spring Rendezvous. This time, instead of trying to save my marriage, I can focus on strengthening the healthy bond my husband and I renewed last year.

in 2012, 680 people like kim and her family enjoyed family social programming like spring rendezvous and family weekend at touch of nature.

Know Your Treatment Options

By burt mehemeti

If you’re unsatisfied with your current treatment for MS relapses—because it doesn’t work well or causes side effects that are hard to manage—you’re invited to a presentation created especially for you.

My brother Ned and I loved everything about Camp Hope. The activities, cabins, food, lake, and mess hall were great.

You will learn from an MS healthcare professional about a different FDA-approved treatment option and hear a firsthand account of a patient’s experience with this treatment.

When we were there, we learned a lot about MS. We learned it stops you from moving, has no cure, and mostly women get it. It is hard having a parent with MS. We help our mom when she needs us, and she’s there for us whenever we need her.

You will also learn:

Burt Mehemeti and his brother Ned enjoyed their opportunity get away and have fun at Camp hope. click to see burt’s story.

At Camp Hope, Ned and I met lots of new people. They were nice, funny, and caring. At camp, kids will have the chance to meet experienced volunteers who are also very helpful and nice. They were there any time we needed them. We are looking forward to going there again. We wouldn’t want to change anything!

We would recommend it to parents and their kids because it is a really fun camp to go to. It’s quite different from the others we have attended. We would tell them to go every single year if they could. We would like to say “Hello” to our new friends and “Thank You” to the volunteers, donors, fundraisers, Society staff and every single person involved with Camp Hope. Thank you again for making it possible to learn and have a great time!

in 2012, 33 children got the chance to learn, have fun, meet other children affected by ms and just be kids at camp hope.

Please register by Monday, January 14, 2013. To register for this program, call 877-219-0410, or go to www.msrelapseprogram.com, and refer to Program 0683. A caregiver or friend is welcome to accompany you. ©2012 Questcor Pharmaceuticals, Inc. PM-542-02 04/12

tips for caregivers

caregiving and the holidays What is it about the holidays that make the everyday pressures of a caregiver relationship escalate? The answer in a general sense is expectations. The karen tripp, MS Lmft holiday season marriage and family puts pressure therapist on everyone to have marvelous food, joyous gatherings and meaningful connections not to mention the pressures around gift buying! Is it any wonder that these expectations turn to stress? Let me suggest a few ideas that can improve your holiday season with your loved one. Recognize the potential for increased stress due to expectations. If MS has changed the way you live, it will change the way you live through the holidays. Together decide what the most important thing is about the holidays. Is it traveling to see family? Is it hosting an event in your home? Is it cooking, shopping, sending cards or presents? The input from BOTH the person with MS and the caregiver is equally important.

Honestly look at abilities and limitations. All families discover during the holidays that all things are not possible. Time, finances, and distance create limitations but so does MS. The question may not be simply “What can we do?” but rather “How much can we do?” Share your new expectations with everyone involved. After looking at your priorities and your abilities, set new expectations for the holidays. Although remember, families often resist change even when the need for change is obvious. That’s OK. Be strong about stating your needs. Be flexible. As you set up plans, be open to new ideas or new demands that cause you to change course. With all caregiving relationships, flexibility is key. I hope these suggestions help you develop realistic compromises that make this holiday enriching for you.

Carepartner and family group

This group covers a series of topics important to caregivers, for anyone who provides care for a loved one with MS. Upcoming meetings: Feb. 5, May 7, 7 p.m. David C. Pratt Cancer Center Mercy Hospital, 607 S. New Ballas Rd. St. Louis, MO 63147 Counselor Karen Tripp facilitates the group.

In can be difficult trying to explain to your child what MS is and how it will affect their life too. It’s important that children who are affected by MS in some way are able to connect with other children who are in similar situations. In addition to Camp Hope in July, we have a licensed social worker who is willing to facilitate a children’s sharing group for children ages 8-12 years old. If you’re interested in having your children participate please contact Stacey at stacey.sickler@nmss. org or by calling 1-800-344-4867 option 2 and ask for Stacey.
