In 1992, Dr. Raman, on a vist to the United States of America to deliver the keynote address of the First International Symposium on Vedic Astrology held at San Rafael, California, mooted the idea of a national and the American Council of Vedic Astrology was founded under Dr. Raman’s blessings by a group of Americans. Countless people in that country have taken to the study of Vedic astrology. In 1993, Dr. Raman founded Raman & Rajeswari Research Foundation to promote the cause of Asrology, Yoga, Vastu, Ayurveda, Vedanta, and other aspects of eastern culture. Dr. Raman presided over several important conferences at both national and international levels. HEN I THINK OF DR. RAMAN and his great efforts of securing to the science of astrology, a global status, which none could achieve earlier, he is for me a gentle colossus in learning and knowledge, but an extremely simple human being at heart, with nothing but love for his fellow human beings. I cannot remember Dr R A M A N without remembering his grandfather, whom I was not fortunate to see. He was the one who perhaps was responsible to shape Dr RAMAN, in his early days. I remember my college days when I could know Dr RAMAN as a very great scholar in astrology but always felt diffident to meet or talk to him. Only in 1972 I could meet Dr RAMAN personally. I went to “Sri Rajeswari” to collect my horoscope, which I had given earlier to the office, to be cast. Then RAMAN saw me. He enquired the purpose of my visit. I introduced myself as the ASP CID. (Later COD) Then taking interest in me Dr RAMAN clad in a white dhoti and shirt, as an embodiment of simplicity, called me in and spoke for some time. This initial intimacy later developed into a lifelong association and friendship. I remember even now, how I was thrilled to speak to a great savant who had predicted the Second World War and also the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

Unfortunately Dr RAMAN had to meet with numerous hardships in his life and the most shattering one was the near-fatal accident of Niranjan Babu. I still remember Dr RAMAN waiting outside the nursing home, on a bench, along with me, when doctors had proclaimed that the patient was quite serious. However, Dr R AMAN was calm and collected and was discussing with me a variety of subjects like philosophy, even in those tense moments.

Dr RAMAN had that great quality of befriending anyone, to make them at ease and more so with those, whom he felt, having an enquiring mind. Dr RAMAN can be compared to Bertrand Russell in every aspect. He was a selfless human being.

I am fortunate that I had that great opportunity in my life for having been associated with this grand personality for decades. I would carry those memories, throughout my life.

99 TH R AMAN J AYANTI - S OUVENIR

It may require days and months to narrate my experiences with RAMAN and my association with him for over several decades. I cannot narrate them in just one or two hours. The news of the death of Dr RAMAN came to me as a great shock. Even today I wonder how at the age of 34, R AMAN could write such a scientific book on Planetary Influences in chaste rhetoric English. Of his great works - 300 Important Combinations and Notable Horoscopes are the great contribution to Astrology. Dr RAMAN’s address in 1975 at the UN is a great achievement, I have no sufficient words to describe the erudite scholarship, knowledge and fame that Dr RAMAN has left as a great legacy to the whole world.

Astrological Analysis of Delayed Marriage PROF. N. S. MURTHY Dr. N.S. Murthy is a consultant in Astrology, Vastu, Feng Shui, Gemmology, Numerology and Clairvoyance for three decades. ARRIAGE IS A SOCIAL, SPIRITUAL, and a legal union between two individuals. A successful marriage depends on two things: finding the right person and being the right person. A successful marriage is like a good recipe whose main ingredients are love, commitment, understanding, concern and togetherness. If you can include these aspects in your married life you can find happiness in your marriage. Andre Maurois once aptly said, “A happy marriage is a long conversation which always seems too short.” A happy married life calls for constant commitment and concern for each other. Barnett Brickner says that “Success in marriage does not come merely through finding the right mate, but through being the right mate.” Regardless of religion, culture or constitutional tradition, societies have always agreed on the nature of marriage. Law of Karma y Action and reaction (in the moral sphere too) are equal and opposite. y We reap the effects of what we did in our previous births. y For every cause (major or minor) there is an effect. y The doctrine of truth will surprise those who believe that man is the complete master of his own fate. y Faith believes the unbelievable and receives the impossible. y Medicine and prayers are gifts of nature to the mortal man. y Medicine has limitations but prayer goes beyond limitations. Though the 7th house is ‘kalatra’ bhava, all the twelve houses have to be considered. 12

1st house rules over nature and the behaviour of the native. 2nd house rules the family, relatives and the financial position of the native. 3rd house rules the in-laws. 4th house rules the happiness in the married life. 5th house rules the children. 6th house rules health ailments. 7th house rules the companion or life partner. 8th house rules the longevity and legacy of the native. 9th house rules the luck from companion. 10th house rules the livelihood of the native. 11th house rules the fulfilment of wishes and desires. 12th house rules the bed comforts. Therefore all of these houses have to be analysed to check for doshas in marriage. Dictums for Delayed Marriage 1. Malefic planet in 7th house or aspecting the 7th house. 2. Malefic planet conjoined with 7th lord or aspecting the 7th lord. 3. Malefic planet Saturn in 7th house or with 7th lord. 4. Malefic planet Saturn in 7th house from Venus, Moon and Sun or with lord of 7th house. 5. Malefic planets in 2nd, 7th, 8th and 12th . 6. Vishakanya yoga 7. Sanyasini yoga 8. Ajanma Kumari Yoga Stri Jataka Stri Jataka (refer Prof. Suryanarayana Rao’s book) isolates three houses in the study of female horoscopes. 1. 5th house – children. 2. 7th house –spouse and marriage. 3. 8th house – marital strength.

Memories and Memorable Events DR. BANGALORE SURESHWARA B. Sureshwara obtained his Doctorate in Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, USA. He has taught Engineering at various universities in USA. Dr. Sureshwara is a student of Ramayana and Vedic Astrology. Dr. Sureshwara successfully predicted the victories of President Bush (2000 and 2004) and President Obama (2008) in the USA Presidential Elections.

S I WRITE THESE LINES, the lingering thought in my mind is what are the important things in father’s long and illustrious life that I should share with his admirers and students around the globe. Is it the virtually single-handed life-long effort of father that successfuly resurrected the subject of astrology from the depths of neglect to the heights of decency and dignity that it occupies today? Is it his life long practice of the noble values of life as enshrined in our ancient tradition and heritage? Is it the effort that he made to make Indians once again proud of their culture, tradition and heritage? Is it the dogged and determined effort that he made to ensure that the lives and livelihood of thousands of hard working and dedicated astrologers become respectable and rewarding? Is it the simple life that he lived throughout his life? Is it. ... ? One can go on and on. In a nutshell father’s contributions as an individual, scholar par excellence, editor, counsellor and guide to the society at large, nation and the world were immense and immeasurable. He breathed astrology twenty-four hours a day. We miss father’s physical presence. One can never forget his sweet smile, pleasant face and the polite words. Even today, his invisible soul and spirit provides us the necessary courage, strength, support, wise counsel and guidance to encourage and enable us to continue his life long mission of properly presenting astrology to the world.

Grandfather completed 32 lakhs Japa of Gayatri Mantra. Father always remarked that grandfather was a divine human being. There is no doubt, that the prayers and poojas of grandfather provided a divine protective umbrella to father throughout his life. Grandfather passed away when I was a small baby. I came to know a lot about him and great grandfather through father. Father took immense delight and pleasure in talking about grandfather and great grandfather and never missed an opportunity to tel us about their achievements.

As many know, father’s early life was no bed of roses. Grandmother died soon after his birth. He was brought up mainly by his grandmother. He grew up under the watchful eyes of his grandfather (Pro fessor B. Suryanarain Rao). His father (Sri B. Nanjunda Rao) was a devout Hindu who practiced every religious rite and ritual precisely as defined by Vedic tradition.

Even though it has been decades, I still remember my high school years. After early education in a local school, the later part of middle and high school education was completed at Bishop Cotton’s Boys School. As Bishop Cottons was known for its discipline and high quality education, father admitted me into it after I had some uneventful early education. Thereafter, my academic

I am sharing this information to indicate the level of affection, respect and reverence father had for grandfather and great grandfather. More importantly, that father fully practised throughout his life our great traditional values, including respecting parents and other elders in the family. During mother’s six decades of life with father, she provided moral, emotional and physical support for father. One of the proudest joys in father’s life was the achievement of mother in the field of Yoga. Mother’s success in curing many major medical ailments through Hatha Yoga is wellknown. During the last twenty-five years, father and mother were virtualy inseparable. Mother accompanied father on his trips, whether it was to inaugurate a conference in the U.S.A. or to preside over a meeting in New Delhi.

performance remarkably improved. He was immensely pleased whenever his children achieved academic and other distinctions in life. One of the pleasant routines of my studies at Bishop Cottons was the mile or so walk that I took each day after class to meet father at the Bowring Institute where he played tennis. I would regularly watch him play and pretty soon became an avid fan of father and tennis. Later on when 1 went to the University of Notre Dame for my doctoral studies in engineering, I turned from an avid fan to a regular tennis player. Father cherished the sport of tennis throughout his life and played for nearly fifty years. On the return trip from Bowring Institute, father and I would converse on my school work and also on other none-too-serious topics. However, this regular routine conversation was the catalyst that later established good ‘ life long communication between father and me. Over the years, our discussion covered politics, sports, family matters and many other subjects. Father and I shared similar views on various matters. I regularly visited India and spent time with father and mother. During the last twenty-five years, I must have made over twenty visits. During every visit, we made it a point to play tennis and continue our discussion. Even though the years passed, father’s athletic ability virtualy remained the same even when he was eighty. When we last played in 1992, he still had the magical touch to make the tennis ball spin in mysterious ways and he always had a soft corner for me on the tennis court. T always considered playing tennis with father an exclusive pri vilege and a never-to-be-forgotten experience of pleasure and delight. While in school, I had completed typewriting classes and stenography. This came in handy during the summer holidays when I ended up as a substitute typist to father on the days the office secretary was absent or on vacation. Then, as a teenager I may have not fully appreciated doing work, but it was still an enjoyable period with father. I attended every lecture of father while I was in Bangalore and later never missed his lectures during my visits home. Father made every lecture interesting, not only to the learned people in the gathering, but even to the novice who attended it. Invariably, because of the audience’s enthusiastic response and interest, his one-hour talk would extend

16

www.astrologicalmagazine.com

to an hour and half or even two hours. He always stood erect and firm when he made his presentation. He was immensely involved in making sure his talk was clear, concise and complete. His voice was clear and distinct. He had an excellent command over English language. By his friendly and charming personality, he was able to tame even• a restless audience. He had a good sense of humour. Father would alwa ys joke to the audience that because he was a Saturnian, he rarely laughed. It was far from true. He had a sweet smile. On a few occasions, when I went to father’s office for “serious” discussion, his smile would invariably disarm me. Our discussions were always pleasant. I was thinking of postponing my annual visit from December 1998 to early 1999. But God’s ways are mysterious. After much thinking, I made the visit in December. It was a mixed blessing. During the visit, I noticed, as always, father was enthusiastic and energetic. He used to climb up and down the stairs atleast a dozen times a day without any sign of weariness or weakness. People half his age would be breathing heavily if they had to make so many trips on the stairs a day. On one evening, I developed some severe pain in the waist area and lay down to take some rest. Even though it was nothing serious, father came into the room at least a dozen times in a matter of few hours to enquire about my pain and made sure that I had taken medicine and was better. In fact, there was nothing unusual in this. Throughout his life, his concern for the welfare of the family members was intense and immense. I was fortunate that pare nts were with me on my visit to Nanjangud to worship Lord Srikanteswara Swamy in December 1998. This has been a family tradition for over sixty years. It was Divine Wil that Father had to have one more Darshan of the Lord before he left for his heavenly abode. Father was a stithapragna in the way our sages and seers reacted to events and incidents in life. Even though his life was tilled with many happy and some sorrowful events, he displayed neither extreme happiness nor extreme sorrow. He looked at life realisticaly and not just sentimentally. Father was a man of divine qualities. By his remarkable achievements and his exemplary life, he will remain with us eternally.

The Sage That He Was B.A. KUMAR BABU

I

FIRST THOUGHT OF DRAWING on my personal experiences with father and writing about it. However, almost every visit with my father was a memorable experience and I decided it would be more appropriate if I could write about the substance of the man.

The Talmud says “when a sage dies, all are kin”; and so it was when dad passed on. People from many lands and from many backgrounds, all had a tear in their eyes for my father. His birthday, today, just brings into focus the varied attributes that made him a sage. For those who were lucky enough to know my father, and many did, he was so kind, approachable, unassuming and sweet that his memory is imperishable. It was fashionable to practise astrology when father restarted T HE A STROLOGICAL MAGAZINE . However, he steadfastly stuck to propagating astrology inspite of all obstacles in his way. In this, I am

99 TH R AMAN J AYANTI - S OUVENIR

reminded of what he told me once, “kumar, you must stand unflinchingly for what you belive”. His beliefs were not the beliefs of a fanatic but that of an enlightened mind that allowed new insights to modify previously held beliefs. Though there are still may unenlightened minds, father, over a period of time, demolished almost all the prejudices that prevailed against astrology. As time progressed, honour upon honour was piled on him. And, through all the deluge of honours, he remained perfectly and completely himself. He was not afraid of scientists, the press or politicians. He did not hesitate to express his opinions, however unpopular they might have been. I want us to celebrate his spirit of steadfast and enlightened individualism on his birthday today.

Brahma Dasa in Dr. Raman’s Chart P.V.R. NARASIMHA RAO, B.TECH, M.S. (U.S.A.) Respect for Tradition Jupiter’s benign influence makes one respect and protect tradition. Right from the time of Maharshi Parasara to the recent times, there have been astrological savants who have faithfully followed the path shown by the great Rishis. There have been also others also who have floated their own theories contradictory of Rishi-prokta. Astrologers of the latter category are typically influenced by Rahu, whereas astrologers of the former category invariably have Jupiter’s blessings in their charts. DR. B.V. RAMAN certainly had the blessings of Jupiter with the 2nd lord Jupiter in the 10th house. Parasara has given importance to the Akshavedamsa (45 th divisional chart) and the Shashtyamsa (60 th divisional chart). While listing the matters to be studied from various divisional charts, the says that all matters can be seen from these two charts. These two charts reflect the Karma gathered from previous births. DR. RAMAN has Jupiter in own sign in both the charts* which makes Jupiter in the 10 th house in Rasi even more potent. With the blessings of Jupiter, DR. RAMAN followed Rishi – prokta and played a historic role in the renaissance of astrology. Considering the herculean contributions he made to the cause of the Divine science of astrology in an age of prejudiced rejection of tradition, one would expect him to attain Moksha. DR. RAMAN’s Brahma Dasa does suggest such a conclusion. Brahma Dasa is one of the Ayurdasas mentioned by Jaimini. Other Ayurdasas like Shula Dasa show misfortune, suffering and death, but Brahma Dasa is

more than a Dasa that is useful in timing death. Brahma is the Creator of this universe. As the naming of an Ayurdasa after the Creator might suggest, Brahma Dasa is a Dasa useful in understanding the “birthdeath-and-birth” cycle,

rather than a Dasa that merely shows death. Brahma Dasa running at death can shed light on one’s next life. Brahma and Maheswara Each chart has a Brahma, eleven Rudras and a Maheswara according to Jaimini. Though the lord of the 8th house is normally called Rudra, we can find eleven Rudra Rasis by taking the 8th sign from all the signs. The sign containing Jupiter is an exception. Maheswara is the lord of the 8 th house from the Chara Atmakaraka and he is supposed to be more important than Rudra. While Rudra stands for the destruction of body. Maheswara stands for the emancipation of the soul (Atma). Maheswara in a

99 TH R AMAN J AYANTI - S OUVENIR

chart represents one’s potential for attaining Moksha and also the channel through which one’s soul tries to attain Moksha. A very strong Maheswara can give Moksha, if the Brahma Dasa operating at death activates his positive energy. In Prof. Raman’s chart, the Moon has the highest advancement in Rasi and he is the Chara Atmakaraka. The exalted Moon represents the soul. Jupiter owns the 8th from the Moon in chart 1 and he does not occupy or exaltation sign. So, Jupiter is Maheswara in this chart and he may suggest emacipation of soul through traditional and spiritual activities. To find Brahma, we have to take the stronger of the Lagna and the 7 th house and consider the 6 th , the 8 th and the 12 th lords therefrom, who are in odd signs in the visible half from the chosen reference. In the case of Dr. Raman, the 7 th house Leo is stronger with 3 planets. From Leo, the 6th, the 8 th and the 12 th lords are Saturn, Jupiter and the Moon, None of them is in an odd sign. Now, consider Aquarius as reference. The Moon, Mercury and Saturn own the 6 th , the 8 th and the 12 th . Mercury is in the 7 th in an odd sign and he is the sole candidate. So, Mercury becomes Brahma. Brahma Dasa Computation Because Brahma is in an odd sign, Brahma Dasa starts from Brahma and proceeds in the regular zodiacal order. The Dasa duration of each sign is found in years by counting from the sign to the 6th lord from it and subtracting one from the count. Both the 6th lord and the distance to the 6th lord are reckoned in the reverse order for even signs. Mercury is in Leo and Leo Dasa is the first. From Leo, Saturn owns the 6 th house and occupies the 10 th house therefrom. So Leo Dasa is for 10 – 1 = 9 years. The next Dasa is Virgo, an even sign. From Virgo, Aries is the 6 th house in reverse order and Mars owns it. Mars is in Leo, the 2 nd from Virgo in reverse order. So, Virgo Dasa is for 2 – 1= 1 years. Brahma Dasa years are enumerated in tabular form on the right.

Active Maheswara DR. RAMAN was running Scorpio Dasa and Cancer Antardasa as per Brahma Dasa on 20th December 1998. Cancer is the 3 rd house from Arudha Lagna and it contains Mrityu Pada (Arudha Pada of the 8th house). Scorpio is in a trine from it and Maheswara Jupiter occupies it! Maheswara Jupiter is strong in the Rasi chart here and he is strong in Shashtyamsa too, where he occupies his Moolatrikona in what is the 50th house according to this author ’s rectification. Such a Maheswara would denote Poorva Punya and effort in this life for Moksha. Brahma Dasa of the Rasi containing Jupiter can surely have given Dr. Raman Moksha.

Never Before, Never Again B. NIRANJAN BABU

M

Y FATHER, DR. B.V. RAMAN was the greatest astrological savant the world has ever produced. Today, if Jyotisha (Vedic astrology) has spread to every nook and corner of the world, it is largely due to the work done by father through his lectures, teachings, writings, books, symposia and conferences. My brothers, sisters and I are, indeed, blessed to have been born to such great parents as DR. B.V. RAMAN and Mrs. Rajeswari Raman.

I have been closely involved with him in his stupendous work of prompting Jyotisha ever since my 21 st year, after my graduation. I remember the way he trained all of us, brothers and sisters, in the best of Eastern and Western culture. I remember way back in April 1959 when he was touring the U.S.A. and other countries, he had instructed us that by the time he returned, we should be thorough in certain Upanishad Slokas (hymns). It was our respected mother Mrs. Rajeswari Raman who saw to it that we learnt these Sanskrit Slokas. All of us would be with him at lunch time and the discussions that we had across the table ranged from Vedic astrology to Vastu to Indian culture. Right from day one of my work with him, he made us go through all disciplines of life and showed us children that it was only hard and sincere work that could pay dividends in one’s life. I remember the days when I was studying at the Bishop Cotton’s Boys School in Bangalore with my brothers. Mother used to send us delicious hot coffee through father, which we would relish after a long day at schools! After school, we would go to the Bowring Institute where he played his favorite game of tennis and observed the game with awe and amazement. Father, a left-hander, was an excellent tennis player. His tennis opponents were baffled and confused by his top-spin serves, which they could hardly receive and return to the other side of the net! We had letterpress machines when our press was first started for printing our magazine. He made us learn the art of printing from the machine men and typesetters. He also trained us in the office in the simple tasks of filing and maintaining correspondence, and in the process, taught us to understand and appreciate managerial responsibilities. When I told father that I wanted to run a bookshop, he sent me training to Higginbotham’s, Bangalore and put me under the benign care of the then manager Mr. Natarajan. I tearnt every aspect of running a successful bookstore, including the basic tasks of cleaning the books, properly putting them in bags, 20

sorting them subject-wise, maintaining the accounts and other details which helped me a great deal when I started my own bookshop Sri Suprajaram, The Occult Book House. Humility was the hallmark of father. For his vast and wonderful knowledge of not only Jyotisha but also many other subjects, he remained a very humble person throughout his life. Even after six decades of work in Vedic astrology, he used to refer to himself as a student of Vedic astrology in his speeches. Really speaking, he was a teacher to thousands and thousands of students spread all over the world. He taught through his books written on every conceivable aspect of Vedic astrology, through the columns of the internationally reputed THE ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE, which he edited for over six decades until December 1998, and through his lectures all over the world. His humility and modesty are what every one of us here needs to learn if we ever want to succeed not only in our respective fields of study and research but also if wish to lead our life as decent and dignified individuals. Today, Vastu has come to recognized as a subject of great importance and practical application. Father conducted the All India Symposium on Vastu in Bangalore in 1995, in which over 1400 delegates from all over India and abroad participated. This was the catalyst for the phenomenal growth of Vastu all over the world. In fact, as early as in 1954, father devoted a whole chapter on Vastu interfacing it with Jyotisha, in his monumental work Muhurtha (Electional Astrology). My confidence was shaken badly in April 1998 when I met with a serious accident and was hospitalized for nearly two months. My parents coaxed, cajoled and persuaded me and they told me it was my bounden duty to rise, stand again on my legs and to educate people on the greatness of Vastu as a subject that can immensely benefit mankind. Thus, it was father and mother who were very instrumental in infusing confidence in me, which enable me to visit the U.S.A. in November 1998 on a successful lecture tour covering Vastu. But for parents’ benign care and persuasion, I would not have recovered so quickly from such a serious life-threatening accident. Father was my chaitanya (life-energy) and today, we re-affirm and re-pledge to continue the excellent and exceptional work of father, through our journal THE ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE and our institutions. I conclude my humble tribute to my father, a great modern sage and seer, as one who can aptly be described as Na Bhooto, No Bhavishyati- never before, never again.
