Imagine a structure made completely of 15 000 tons of snow and 500 tons of ice with ceilings over 5.4 metres high (19 feet), walls covered with original artwork, and furniture carved out of ice blocks. The Hôtel de Glace is one of the most unique and complex undertakings. It takes approximately five weeks to erect this masterpiece of architecture. From its first incarnation measuring 1 000 square meters, Hôtel de Glace now covers more than 3 000 square meters. Keeping the originality and revitalizing the design and décor, the Hôtel de Glace artisans amaze everyone by modifying and creating new elements every year. Each yearly edition will be no exception with 36 wonderful rooms and theme suites, the Ice Café, the magnificent chapel where couples can unite their destinies, an immense lobby with a candelabra lit by fibre optics, an interior courtyard, hot tubs and sauna, functional fireplaces, and the majestic reception room named the Ice Bar with its animated evenings that will enthral everyone for hours with entertainment.

At the beginning of December, the process to raise the Hôtel de Glace starts. Approximately 20 workers are needed to make the Hôtel de Glace and around 10 to 15 more complete the details of the Hôtel de Glace involving the sculpting, polishing, carving, and so much more! The workers will do the finishing touches a few days before the Grand opening of the Hôtel de Glace which is in mid-January. The Hôtel de Glace is made entirely of snow and ice. Stainless steel moulds are used in the making of the Hôtel de Glace. They are first put into place and then wooden walls are fixed at a certain distance from the steel moulds. Snow is blown between the moulds and the wooden walls, completely covering the steel moulds. The metal frames are removed completely from the structure once the snow has frozen into place, which takes between ten hours and three days! Ice blocks are used for interior structures, such as columns, the bar counter, furniture, and sculptures. Ice blocks are also placed at the extremities of the hallways in a brick like fashion. If you worry about sleeping accomodation among icicles, fret not: a comfortable bed is awaiting you. The Hotel and its furniture are entirely made out of snow and ice, and the beds are too, but there is more! Blocks of ice form the base, followed by a solid wood box-frame that provides the initial separation from the ice, and a thick foam mattress covered by a fleece sheet completes the bed. When the evening arrives, a warm and soft sleeping bag will be delivered to your room with a pillow. These sleeping bags can resist against temperatures as low as -30° C (-22° F). There is no need to worry because the ambient temperature in the rooms remain between -3° C (26° F) and -5° C (23° F), despite colder temperatures outside the walls of the Hotel.

One last tip: if you're planning to go, remember that during winter, in Quebec, the outside temperatures can vary between -25° C (-13° F) in February to 5° C (41° F) in March. Appropriate clothing is necessary!
