The Holstein herd at DOCKENFLAT Farm just south of Lockerbie is well known for its ability to produce large volumes of milk. At present the sheds at Dockenflat are running at capacity so the decision has been made to reduce stock number resulting in this excellent opportunity for you to purchase high-end cattle. Currently the herd is averaging 12503kgs at 4.1% butterfat and 3.4% protein. They are medium in stature and have tremendous width of rump and chest. The structure of the feet and legs is ideal and the udder quality throughout the herd is to the highest of standards. This sale group is averaging 43kgs!

The herd has been bred using the GENUS mating programme for many years and the results speak for themselves. We highly recommend this special consignment and are confident they will perform in your dairy farm.

Herd Health

The Dockenflat cows are vaccinated for IBR & BVD and are tested free of BVD. They are tested for Johnes each quarter and are a low risk herd. The farm is situated in a four year TB testing area and there has never been TB in the herd.

The ESK pedigree herd consists of cows with strong frames, tremendous width of rump and have excellent feet & legs. The rolling herd average is 9158kg 4.47%bf 3.35%p cc99. This sale comprises all the most recently calved cows & heifers.

The herd is grazed from April during the day and are buffer fed at night. They are fed with a forage box with a dairy blend added to the silage. They are cubicle housed and milked twice a day.

The genetics include a blend of the best Holstein and British Friesian sires resulting in a herd of powerful strong Holstein Friesians. Holstein sires include Supersire, DG Charley, Agronaut & Pepper and the best British Friesian sires include daughters of Catlane Chad, Inch Brilliant and Kirby Jupiter. The Hourie family have been producing milk at Bain Farm on Orkeny Island since the early part of the 1940’s and the family celebrated a century at Bain Farm back in 2020. Situated in the famous archipelago islands of Orkney, Bain Farm is situated on the west of the mainland between the world-renowned archaeological sites of the Ring of Brodgar and the Neolithic village of Skara Brae.

The decision to sell this impressive Fleckvieh herd has been a difficult one for Willie and Kirstin Hourie. Having happy and healthy cows have been a priority at Bain Farm and cows that can perform is a must, despite the island’s extremely harsh and cold winters with very little daylight, these Fleckvieh cows have always ticked the boxes. Originally the herd was pure Ayrshire then was upgraded to British Friesian and then in the 80’s high yielding Holsteins were used. The first Pedigree Flechvieh sire was introduced in 2010 along with some Pedigree Flechvieh heifers that were imported from Austria through Jim Hamilton of SQ Genetics. Currently the herd is averaging 8016kgs at 4.61% butterfat and 3.62% protein with an average cell count of 115 (from milk sold). Grazing normally starts in early May, the winter ration has been grass silage, home grown barley (4kgs) and a home mix of dark grains, barley and soy feed in the milking parlour. The herd is housed in cubicles during the winter months.

The herd is A2A2 and all the Flechvieh sires have been A2A2 since 2010. The bulls have been selected by Jim Hamilton from SQ Genetics. They have been genomic tested with a big emphasis on milk production, butterfat, protein and fitness traits. The udder quality in the Bain herd is to a high standard and the younger portion of the herd is exceptional.

Herd Health

The herd is accredited BVD free and is tested free of Johnes disease. No mastitis has been recorded this winter. The herd is in a four year TB testing area and Orkney Island is TB free.

Interest chargeable from date of purchase at 7.25% over Clydesdale Bank base rate at the time, for accounts in default

Purchases shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the law in England and Scotland

If payment is made by credit card, it must be linked to a business bank account

New customers and or agents wishing to purchase on behalf of another party must contact the company's main office at Carlisle at least 48 hours prior to sale, to provide full details and references for authorisation

Please note that all lots/items must be settled on the day of purchase and prior to clearance of any stock

For the avoidance of doubt H&H reserve the right to contra or keep sale proceeds to offset against an outstanding account

Sale Conditions

• Sold under the conditions of sale as displayed in the mart recommended by the Livestock Auctioneers Association for England and Wales

• Please ensure all paperwork is handed into the office at least 1 hour before the animals enter the sale ring

• All cattle must be double tagged with Ministry approved tags and information supplied on the respective entry forms

• It is the responsibility of the buyer to ensure that any animals destined for the food chain are out with any withdrawal period. This includes antibiotics and anthelmintics that the seller may have given prior to sale.

• Payment will only be made to the exhibitor.

• No lots can leave the market without a pass slip being issued by the main office

• TB Testing: All cattle over the age of 41days moving out of yearly testing herds must be pre-movement tested within 60 days prior to the sale. The yearly TB testing interval of the herd consignment will be provided on the display board at the point of sale. The yearly testing interval will be signified by the numbers 1 or 4. The information is given for guidance only, Harrison & Hetherington Ltd accept no responsibility for any consequences of such information

• All purchasers have two working days from the time of sale to satisfy themselves that all documentation received is correct and any discrepancies must be notified to the auctioneers within the time limit

• No cow or heifer in the last 10% of pregnancy (approximately 27 days), or that has given birth in the last week, are considered not fit for transport, and are also unfit for presentation at a market.

UDDER WARRANTY - Unless otherwise stated or announced, any cow or heifer in-milk at the time of the sale shall carry a Vendors Warranty that she is correct in udder and teats at the time of sale. Any claim under this warranty must be notified to the Auctioneers within one hour of the close of the sale, which can be submitted on an oral basis. If the auctioneers are satisfied that the udder is not correct in all respects, and does not comply with the warranty given, the sale of the animal can be cancelled.
