03 Dear friends, As you would expect, the major feature in this issue of The Africa Connection covers the naming ceremony of the MV NileDutch Breda, which was held on 28 May 2014 at the Shanghai Shipyard. The Breda is the first of four new vessels which are specially designed to optimise the efficiency of our operations in West African ports and will help us in further developing our services. Initially they will operate on the Asia – West Africa rotation. As always, it’s the people who make NileDutch. In this issue you can read about the work done by our colleague Marinus van den Berg in Rotterdam, who ensures that our vessels also carry cargo on their return voyages from West Africa. We are also launching a new column, 'At Work in', which introduces you to one of our regional offices and the people there who keep your cargo moving. In this issue you can read about our Cameroon office. The “Person in the Picture” is Commercial Coordinator Cintia Siqueira at NileDutch Brazil. She is based in Santos, one of our six offices in the country. This issue’s customer story is about Saber Pte Ltd in Singapore, for whom we ship a range of products. There is also an interesting article about Soportos who operate a major terminal in Luanda, Angola. Their General Manager, Daniel Zohar, offers an interesting insight into the booming economy of Angola and the terminal’s essential role in the country’s transport infrastructure.

The Maatjes Festijn in Antwerp celebrates the arrival of the first new herring catch of the season. Our Antwerp office always invites many customers to this event and it is a great opportunity to catch up with everybody. We also have news from outside our company. The orphanage in Kimbondo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to 750 children. Earlier this year we donated a reefer container to them for storing food. We hope that this will contribute to the quality of life of these children and we are very happy to contribute to the orphanage’s important work. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank the team on site and our colleagues in China for organising the naming ceremony of the MV NileDutch Breda. I would also like to thank all the customers, business partners and colleagues who contributed to this issue. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and doing business with NileDutch and wish you all the best for the upcoming holiday season.

Naming ceremony of the MV NileDutch Breda New build programme well on the way Captain Kazarin & Anneke van Aalst, godmother of the MV ND Breda

The NileDutch

NEW BUILDS

The first of our four new build vessels has now been named. This event marked an important step in our company’s history as these custom-designed ships will enable us to provide an even better service to our customers. The other three vessels will be completed later this year. The naming ceremony of the first of our new build vessels, the MV NileDutch Breda, was held on 28 May 2014 at the Shanghai Shipyard on Chongming Island, Shanghai, China. Anneke van Aalst, wife of NileDutch president Wim van Aalst, was the ship's godmother. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the shipyard, the Dutch consulate in Shanghai, port authorities and NileDutch business partners, customers and personnel. It was a festive event, with lion dancers and traditional Chinese drummers to chase any evil spirits away. The delicacies served at the ceremony were influenced by Chinese, African and Dutch cuisine. There were exchanges of presents, between the shipyard and NileDutch, and Mrs Van Aalst and the captain. Finally, those attending the event had the opportunity to make a tour of the vessel. Everyone enjoyed the festive atmosphere and was aware of the importance of the new build vessels to NileDutch.

Ningbo, Xiamen, Shekou, Singapore, Durban, Pointe Noire, Luanda, Lobito and Namibe. On the westward leg the vessel will carry a range of consumer and industrial goods, and when sailing eastwards the Breda will carry resources such as cacao and timber. The other three new build ships are scheduled to enter service later in the year.

The MV NileDutch Breda entered the Asia – West Africa rotation at the end of June. The port schedule is Shanghai, I N V I TAT I O N

06 OPTIMISED FOR WEST AFRICA The dimensions and deck equipment of the new vessels are tailored to the ports they will serve in West Africa. Each vessel has a capacity of 3510 TEU (1530 in the holds and 1980 on the hatch covers). The fuel-efficient 20,000 kW engines will ensure operational efficiency and a low environmental impact. The vessels have a length over all of 224 metres, beam (width) of 34.8 metres and draught of 12.5 metres. The new builds will operate on our busy Far East - West Africa rotation. The four vessels will be registered in the Netherlands and fly the Dutch flag.

NILEDUTCH AND CHINA For more than ten years China is an important market for us as Chinese exports to West Africa are rapidly expanding. We have built up a network of offices throughout the country, from north to south: Tianjin, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. The rapid development of the Chinese economy and increasing trade links with Africa have result in a significant increase in volume on the trade routes between these regions. By having own offices as well as extensive networks at both ends of the route NileDutch is in an excellent position to serve this buoyant market.

07 FACTS AND FIGURES ABOUT THE NILEDUTCH NEW BUILDS • 11,500 tonnes: the quantity of steel required for each vessel. Each 10 x 2 m sheet of steel plate has a thickness and quality determined by its purpose in the vessel. • 3 weeks: the time required to cut all the steel for one vessel. • 165: the number of blocks required for each of our new vessels. Each block can take anything from 2 weeks to 3 months to construct, but as several blocks are built in parallel, this part of the process only takes 5 to 6 months. • 75 km: the distance some of the 165 steel blocks travel by barge from the shipyard to the dry dock where they are welded together, a process which takes 3.5 months of double shifts. • 4.5 months: time required to finish each vessel after it is launched from the dry dock. This includes installing the engines, pumps, equipment and lifeboats.

• 2 - 3 days: length of the sea trial. After successful trials, the vessels will be delivered to us, ready for their maiden voyages. • 20,000 kW: the power of the engine that will drive each of our new vessels. Each vessel will be able to carry 3,300 t heavy fuel oil, 210 t marine diesel oil and 300 t fresh water. This is in addition to the 18,000 t capacity of the water ballast tanks. • 3,510 TEU: the total capacity of each new vessel, with 1,530 TEU divided between the six holds and 1,980 TEU on the hatch covers. • 12.5 m: the draught (from waterline to keel) and length (224 m) are limited, making the design more suitable for the African ports these ships will visit. The beam (width) is 34.8 m to ensure sufficient capacity. • 21: the number of crew members who will live aboard, each with their own cabin and bathroom.

CITY OF BREDA The MV NileDutch Breda was named after Breda, a historic city in the South of the Netherlands. Founded in the twelfth century, the city now has a Breda's coat of arms population of around 180,000. Located between the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, and relatively close to Amsterdam and Brussels, the city is an important logistics hub. Breda has been home to the Nassau family (ancestors of the Dutch royal family), Charles II of England while in exile, and world-famous painter Vincent van Gogh. The other three new vessels will also be named after European cities: Dordrecht, Rotterdam and Antwerp.

NileDutch donates reefer container to orphanage in DRC No fewer than 750 children live at the orphanage in Kimbondo (40 km from the centre of Kinshasa, on the Bas-Congo road) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In April, NileDutch donated a 40’ HC reefer container to the orphanage, for use as a food store. Because of the site conditions it was quite a challenge for the truck and crane crew to position the container. Père Hugo, who leads the organisation, greatly appreciated this donation which will make it easier to feed the children at the orphanage.

Sailing in the opposite direction: backhaul cargo Although

NileDutch

is

usually

associated with shipping cargo to Africa, that doesn’t mean our ships return empty. Marinus van den Berg, Sales Manager Commodities, makes sure they don’t.

THE STREET

11

After working in Africa for a number of years Marinus joined our company almost two decades ago and has since focussed on selling capacity on the return legs. “We now carry a significant volume of backhaul cargo, mostly coffee, cacao, timber, rubber and other commodities. These products are shipped from ports such as Luanda, Lobito, Abidjan and Bata,” says Marinus. “When I joined NileDutch the shipments were mostly from West Africa to Europe, but China is now also an important destination. Some of the cargo is seasonal. For example, the cocoa season lasts only three to four months, during that period we ship the beans in large volumes from Ivory Coast and Cameroon to Amsterdam (an important centre of the cocoa trade) and the Far East. This cargo is very sensitive to humidity. That means the containers have to be expertly prepared to ensure that the cacao arrives in the best possible condition.“

Timber

It’s all about the products! I’ve always enjoyed working with natural products and learning about their properties and applications. That helps me communicate with customers and understand their businesses.

Marinus is based at the Rotterdam office, and every day he deals with literally dozens of requests for quotations from the over 50 offices and agents NileDutch works with. “The international contacts are a key aspect of my work, and also what I enjoy most. I really believe that the personal touch is what distinguishes NileDutch from other container lines. There is strong competition in this market and you have to be genuinely interested in your customers and understand their business to build up a relationship. One of our selling points is that we offer a higher frequency on routes to the Far East than most of our competitors. The cargo in that direction is mostly cocoa, cotton and timber.

Coffee

Cacao

12 In addition to the backhaul cargo from Africa to China and Europe, we also carry a lot of coastal cargo between African ports. Important destinations include Douala, Libreville, Pointe Noire and Bata. The cargo on these routes includes chocolate, soap, cosmetics and materials for making wigs (a major fashion item in Africa). Hans van der Ko

Maintaining the backhaul business means visiting potential customers, mostly trading companies, and explaining NileDutch’s commitment to the region, our network, competitive rates and ability to respond quickly – always essential when dealing with commodities and markets like these. Once we start working with a customer the relationship usually continues for years and they appreciate having the same contacts at NileDutch, rather than dealing with a different sales rep every year. The great thing about my job is that you always meet new people and learn more about both their cargo and their cultures. Initially, I mostly visited customers in Africa, always together with someone from the local NileDutch office. Nowadays I also travel to the Far East a lot and I enjoy discovering that region. Every year I make many trips to Africa and the Far East and also shorter trips within Europe.

oij (Joko Fruit) &

JOKO FRUIT Joko Fruit imports a range of high-quality fruit and supplies customers in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France. The company is a market leader in coconuts, which NileDutch has been shipping for them from Abidjan, Ivory Coast to Rotterdam for around 20 years. Joko Fruit was founded in 1958 by the Van der Kooij brothers and recently moved to attractive new offices at Schiehaven in the Port of Rotterdam. “I first met Hans van der Kooij about 20 years ago when NileDutch started the service to Ivory Coast and I heard Joko were trading with the country. Since then we have built up a solid business relationship and become good friends. Of course, Hans is always invited to our customer events, such as the NileDutch golf tournament in the Netherlands. We have retained Joko as a customer, and shipped many loads of coconuts for them, because they think we offer a reliable service at a good price.”

Basically, I enjoy working at NileDutch because everybody here is committed to their work and pulls in the same direction and because we offer a good service to our customers. My job also gives me the opportunity to learn new things, about people, cultures and products, all the time.”

Soportos: the leading container terminal in Angola Soportos is one of the most service-focused container terminals in Luanda, Angola’s main port. NileDutch uses the terminal for all its services. It gives our customers effective access to Angola’s booming market.

STORY

Soportos has excellent modern container handling equipment with extensive storage facilities and can deliver your containers to their final destination using the company’s own fleet of trucks. To ensure a personal touch, NileDutch has dedicated personnel at the terminal and a special office for VIP accounts. We have operated regular services to Angola for over three decades.

The Soportos terminal plays an important role in the national infrastructure. In addition to the 7,000 TEU storage facility at the main terminal there is also an external container storage facility. This is based at the nearby Mulemba second-line terminal and has a capacity of 10,000 TEU (bonded and unbonded) at attractive rates. Truck transport to Mulemba is free of charge for the recipient.

Daniel Zohar, General Manager of Soportos, has a wide-ranging experience in fields from port consultancy and auditing through to mobile communications solutions. He has also worked in other countries, such as Guinea, Togo, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Senegal and Nigeria. This has given him the broad experience he needs for his current position.

“We are involved in the partnership for national reconstruction. Luanda is the country’s largest port and deals with 70% of Angola’s imports. At Soportos we handle 90% of the construction market imports and 30% of general trade, and both figures are still increasing. The government’s reconstruction plans cover a wide range of medium and long term projects such as the construction of roads and railways. Our extensive container storage facilities are supported by our own fleet of around 500 trucks which can deliver containers to their final destination. The relationship between Soportos and NileDutch is also very important. It enables NileDutch customers to save time and money and, very important in Angola, optimize their logistics.”

“The Angolan economy is really booming. Firstly, oil production is rising as a result of major investments by the government and companies such as Total,” explains Daniel. “Angola is about to become the number one oil producing nation in Africa. This has a huge impact on the economy of the country. Secondly, the Angolan government has initiated a wide range of reconstruction and development projects. Many of these projects were awarded to Chinese companies. Soportos is the government’s main and preferred logistics partner for these imports. Finally, in addition to the numerous Portuguese and Brazilian companies active in Angola, the authorities aim to attract more European companies to the country to diversify the economic landscape.” The ambitious plans for the construction of new roads and railways (e.g. the railway between Lobito and Kinshasa) certainly look set to bring a lot more cargo to Soportos. This will easily be accommodated with their service-minded organisation and modern equipment. Most of this cargo will come from far afield. “Angola’s main economic partners are China, Brazil, Portugal and South Africa. There is relatively little trade with other African countries.”

16 Looking on the bright side with Cintia Siqueira

Maintaining our position as number one for container traffic between Brazil and West Africa takes a high level of dedication, passion and knowledge. Happily, we have Cintia Siqueira, Commercial Coordinator, NileDutch Brazil, working hard to motivate and challenge our Brazilian team to continuously improve the level of service and to exceed our expectations.

“I’ve worked for NileDutch in Brazil since June 2002. It wasn’t easy in the beginning as nobody had heard of NileDutch, but with hard work and perservance, we slowly built up the business until 2011 when we became number one for container volumes shipped from Brazil to West Africa. And we’ve managed to maintain that position ever since. Despite Brazil being a big country, our sales team are well spread over our six offices, enabling us to cover South and Southeast Brazil without any difficulties. And our team is important. Achieving our current position has involved a lot of hard work, but it hasn’t been a solo effort. I’m lucky to work with a great team of passionate and dedicated commercial and customer service people. I’m also lucky that my directors and my manager have had so much belief in my potential since the beginning, plus they have been so generous with tools and support, enabling me to fully develop my skills and talents. This support continues to this day and is reflected in the way I manage my daily work and supervise my team. The future looks bright. We continue to work hard, to listen to our customers and to improve our service. I remain passionate about my job and about NileDutch. I believe that every member of the team in Brazil adds energy to NileDutch. The sum of our energy creates a powerful force, which helps the work to flow better, smoother. But life isn’t just about work. Outside of work I believe it is important to be independent. Yes, to rely on others, but also to be able to rely on yourself. To take responsibility for yourself and your happiness. To take pride in what you do and what you have achieved. My independent side was happy when, six years ago, I was able to buy an apartment to call my own in Santos, my home town.

Santos is also the city where my family lives. My parents have achieved so much in their lives. They passed their core values onto my brother and I. I believe that I positively reflect both their beliefs and their values. While there might be things I would like to change about my past, I know that these situations have made me who I am today. I find it more beneficial to transform negative events into positive ones, to believe that every day is a new start with new chances, to look on the bright side as much as possible.”

The company was originally set up in 1995 and has been trading under its current name since 2010. They supply a range of edible oils and fats, and related products to customers worldwide. Saber has its own packing plant at Pasir Gudang in Malaysia which can process a wide range of packaging types.

NileDutch provides extensive connections to Southern West Africa with competitive transit times and a reliable service. When working with their teams we know that we have made the right choice to get our products to Africa. The quality of their service and professionalism always inspires confidence.

“Our main product groups are vegetable oils and fats,” says Ramasamy Sukumaran. “We also supply soap, milk products and rice. Some examples of our range: cooking oils (soya, sunflower, canola, etc.) in consumer packaging, lauric oils, ghee and margarine, evaporated milk, various products for the soap industry, and rice. We export these to over 80 countries, in the Middle East, Africa, and other regions.

Our company continues to expand and we want to extend our market presence to over 120 countries. Of course, we also want to continue improving our product lines to meet the changing needs of our customers. And we look forward to shipping much of this cargo with NileDutch.”

Our contact people at NileDutch Singapore, in particular Mark Lim and Chia Leng, really know Africa and are always willing to go the extra mile to support our business requirements. We mostly have cargo for the FEWA route. We deal with NileDutch teams in various countries and they are always pleasant to work with and very supportive.

20 The Cameroon office was set up in 1988, as SUDMAR, a shipping agent representing NileDutch exclusively. In December 2013 the company became NileDutch Cameroon. Based in Douala, the office has a staff of 20, with Joseph Oyono as General Director, Elliott Nsomotto as Director of Finance, and Marie Kamga as Director of Commerce and Operations, supported by an enthusiastic team. “We handle a lot of coastal traffic for local industries. They ship products such as soap, bottles, paint, exercise books, food and aluminium items to other countries in the region. As a feeder port we generate quite a lot of turnover with these short-haul services. Though in recent months congestion in some ports has been a problem. We are in daily contact with the NileDutch offices in Rotterdam, Antwerp, Shanghai and Singapore. And, of course, Pointe Noire, the port closest to us. Our colleagues really know their

At work in

DOUALA job and that enables us to respond quickly to our clients when they have questions about our shipping services. We have also developed good relationships with the people in the other NileDutch offices and that makes the work enjoyable. We have been successful in business for 27 years now and to continue that success we know we have to change in-line with the industry. But flexibility, which we think is the strongest element of our service, will always be key. That is essential to providing an excellent service to our customers. Obviously there’s a life outside the office too. Recently we organised a march on Women’s Day which was a great occasion and my colleagues in the office enjoyed that. We like to organise at least one event every year – sometimes they’re just fun, sometimes they’re serious. It’s great to be part of NileDutch as the company is simply very good at getting cargo from its origin to its destination. That expertise means that they’re also good at taking the right decisions to grow the organisation. Here in Douala we have our own building which is comfortably furnished. That not only makes it enjoyable to work here, and a source of pride, but also instils confidence in our customers. If you ever visit Cameroon, there is a lot to see. Waza National Park, in the north, is a UNESCO biosphere reserve and has a wide diversity of animals and plants. In the south, Kribi beach is very nice and features the Chutes de la Lobe waterfall where the Lobe river flows into the ocean. In the west you can enjoy panoramic views of the mountains and art. Sultan Njoya’s palace in Foumban is also worth a visit."
