It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt… –Mark Twain Greetings to you all! It’s 4:20 in the a.m. of this fm day and the sky can’t seem to hold back. It’s pouring again, and after it stops I think we’ll have gotten a West Coast for the Altered State. Now, I like to fish and I eat what I catch…but given the food source of our new ocean (formerly northern Texas), I might have to get into the catch and release mode for some time… We hope you are all enjoying out new approach of publishing online. It is far more efficient than just doing the old-school printed publications. For one thing, there was never a Nightflying printed in the last 35+ years that didn’t miss something…usually a major show announcement the day after we print. Nowadays we can release new events on a daily basis. What’s more, while I can talk about the musicians and shows all day long in print, you can’t actually hear it. You can now if you wish. What’s more, since this device in your hand has access to virtually all known knowledge, you can essentially look up any band or act in the world. Think about that for a moment. With these so-called smart devices, you can literally communicate with over 1/8th of the people on the planet. You have your own broadcasting devices…that cover it all: radio, tv, print…you are now multi-media. I don’t know what any of you think about Reincarnation, but if I did live before it was a long long time ago. Things that used to be considered magic are now rudimentary… This Summer has started off with a bang…and I’m not talking about just the thunder and lightening. The outdoor fests have taken hold and the crowds are coming out en masse to rock and slosh in the rain and mud. Can you say rock ‘n’ roll diehards? This, officially, is the Ain’t No Cure… edition of Nightflying. Lots of folks think

we’re referring to the old song by the Who…but I’m not referring to the Summertime Blues… What I mean here is the sheer power of the music…Once the music is in your system, there really ain’t no cure for it…and only the old guard folks will disagree…

Coming right up is the Homegrown Music Festival at Byrd’s Adventure Center on the Mulberry River. This camp-out rock festival will happen July 21 through 23. On the bill are Leftover Salmon, The Wood Brothers, Town Mountain, Earphunk, and about a couple dozen more acts. Byrd’s has been creating many memorable music events for over two decades. In Central Arkansas…….

The White Water Tavern has been a strong music venue for several decades. Starting out as The Pitcher, when Larry ‘Goose’ Garrison took it over it became the infamous “down-home neighborhood bar”, and has been one of the very best music rooms in The Altered State. The acoustics of the room are incredible…so much so that when we brought in a sound engineer to record the Blues Patrol album way back when, after checking out the takes he remarked that “the room is playing along! It’s incredible…” I asked him, “yeah, but how do we tune it?” He replied “there ain’t no need to tune it…it’s perfect as it is…” Check out The Creek Rocks, Go Fast, Brad Williams, The Dexateens, Nikki Hill, Brain Stems, Bombay Harambee and more in the coming weeks. Dugan’s Pub has been bringing in truly great music since it opened. Set to appear in the coming weeks are Funk Yeah, the Karla Case Band, Good Foot, Big John Miller, Hoodoo Blues Revue and so much more. Good Foot has been drawing the crowds around Central Arkansas for the last several months. Starting out as a 70s-style funk band two years ago, but in the last six months has made a considerable shift in the way of jazz. They also do a lot of Grateful Dead covers and originals. Good Foot is comprised of Matt Treadway, Brian Oman, Brad Birge, Dave Hoffpauir, Dave Williams and Nick Matson. The good thing is when they play the streets are far safer. They describe themselves as “a jam band at the core, and we stretch tunes that are already funky and turn them into something hard to pin down.” Live music at Dugan’s is every weekend, with a few shows tossed in depending on acts coming through, and special events. The annual Hot Springs Blues Festival has been moved back to Bath House Row. After spending last year at Oaklawn Park, the promoters chose to once again go back to Holl Wheatley Plaza. This is where the previous few festivals had been, and much better than the race track. It seems that the good folks of Oaklawn were a bit unamused with the fact that blues fest folk don’t have any money to spend for gambling. This, of course, was the favorite hang out for Al Capone in the golden days of gambling in the Spa…there’s a statue on the sidewalk of Al, permanently resting his bones on a bench. It is most popular for the tourist crowd, and is a very popular place to take selfies with Al. Al Capone, of course, hung out in Hot Springs often, back in its casino gambling days. He claimed it was “for the water,” referring to the natural hot baths. The Ohio has music 7 days a week.

THE Rock & Roll party spot in Conway ---Peter Read It wasn’t too many years ago that the city of Conway actually spent a huge pile of money to prevent Outback Steakhouse a restaurant-club from opening in Conway. The business needed to be able to serve alcohol to its customers, and at the time, Conway simply prohibited alcohol nearly across the board with very few exceptions. The VFW and Country Club were those exceptions. Fast forward to now, not only are there several clubs and eateries that have bars, there are a couple whose main business models are, in fact, BARS. One of those, TCs Midtown Grill, has become one of the hottest nightclubs in Arkansas. TCs is open every day, with a full libation bar, live bands every weekend, pool tables, shuffleboard, a large wooden dance floor, and a huge array of electronic games, and a large menu for serving lunch and dinner 7 days a week. There’s a concert-quality stage and sound system, along with a custom light show, and even a special rig from the ceiling for musical acrobatics, i.e., flying musicians above the crowds… (Kids, don’t even think of trying this at home…) Plus, it’s an old-fashoned place that is smokerfriendly. Indoors. With your drink. As it should be. “Look…up in he sky…is it a man? A bird? No…it’s TC...” The large concert-stage, professional lightshow, along with the high caliber sound system provides ample access to even the biggest bands. Indeed, each appearance takes the shape of a concert, rather than a mere club gig. TC’s Midtown Grill opened a couple years ago and has taken Conway by storm. An entire entertainment venue, the club concentrates on music every Sunday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The Ben Miller Band does Europe Following tour across the USA, band goes overseas to share mudstomp music with the world

---Peter Read We’re so proud. The Ben Miller Band is now on a European tour with ZZ Top, and has been sending in some great shots from the tour. One reason for such pride is that the band is now a combination of two bands that Nightflying sent as our showcase bands to SXSW: The Ben Miller Band and Tyrannosaurus Chicken. After Scott Lieper left the Ben Miller Band to go solo, they were left in a lurch as they had many contracts in force…tours, record deals, and everything that goes upon the many steps of the ladder of success. Meanwhile, their old friends Smilin’ Bob Lewis and Rachel Ammons, known as Tyrannosaurus Chicken, were drawing great attention on their own, touring and performing in many states. Both bands had shared stages together many times. Indeed, they were both part of the Mudstomp Records family started years ago by Curtis Copeland. The reports from the road are exciting, as well as breathtaking. The 6 week tour started a few weeks ago, and is being handled by Monterrey International. To date they have played many European shows, that include concerts in the UK, Belgium, The Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The band consists of Ben Miller, Scott Leeper, Smilin’ Bob Lewis and Rachel Ammons. They are each multi-instrumentalists and switch off on guitar, banjo, slide guitar, bass, harmonicas, violin, and various types of percussion. They all do vocals. They are all writing new material for the planned album to be recorded in Nashville after they return from overseas. We’ll have a full-blown feature on the band in the near future…

The Arkansas Blues Hall of Fame recognizes local Blues Contributors ---Danielle Davis, story and photos On Wednesday night, June 15, fans, musicians, and friends and family came out to The Big Chill in Hot Springs, Arkansas to support the 2016 inductees to the Arkansas Blues Hall of Fame. With a standing-room only crowd, many musicians participated in the open blues jam while celebrating the legendary musicians recognized during the evening. 2016 Arkansas Blues Hall of Fame inductees included guitarist Danny Smith, keyboardist/vocalist Mike Fraz, and harp player Greg Batterton. During the evening, the Batterton family accepted the certificate on behalf of Greg Batterton while also remembering the musician for his amazing talents and contributions made to the blues music genre. Many tears of happiness continued to fill the room as the evening progressed. As presenter and musician Mike Dollins announced the induction of The Big Chill as the “Great Blues Bar,” owner Gina Parks was more than accepting of the generous acknowledgment for her fantastic establishment. President Mary Melton accepted the certificate on behalf of the Spa City Blues Society as the non-profit organization was inducted into the 2016 Arkansas Blues Hall of Fame for being the “Great Blues Society of Arkansas.” --DD

ARKANSAS, BLUES HALL OF FAME ® ---Mike Dollins Packing our gear out of a club, in San Diego, California on a Sunday night somewhere around 2001, for a local blues festival, I caught a glimpse of an unassuming guy, leaning up near the front door. He asked, “Are you Mike Dollins,” I answered,”Yes, why?” Dan Marolt introduced his self to me, and we shook hands. I knew who he was, as we had exchanged emails about guitars, and blues. My band had gigged all weekend, and we were really tired. I got Dan’s business card, and he also gave me a shot glass, guitar slide, with a logo on it. In the darkness, I just thanked him, stuffed the items in my pocket and finished loading gear. This brief meeting formed a fifteen year friendship. I soon discovered Mr. Marolt, had created the Blues Hall of Fame ® in 1999. Not just a flash in the pan, overnight whiz bang bigger than life web site. More on the pyramid building aspect that takes longer, but bigger and higher. The next day I pulled up Dan Marolt’s, Blues Hall of Fame ®, web site and read his “Home” page. Dan had done his homework, and I could see he was seriously dedicated to the preservation, recognition and the perpetuation for the American Musical Art Form, “The Blues.” Unlike blues societies, and other induction Hall of Fames, Dan created different levels of induction for blues performers. Besides listing the Legendary Blues Artists with high name recognition, known internationally, he wanted to recognize musicians with local, or regional popularity also. Working musicians that have spent a lifetime honing their Blues playing, and dragging gear in clubs at 9 PM, and back out at 2 AM, night after night for decades playing for a bar percentage plus tips. In visiting Dan’s BHF, web site, (www.blueshalloffame.org), you can’t judge a book by its cover. Like Alice drifting down the rabbit hole, this web site is endless, and detailed like none other. Each public induction event is documented on our site and can be viewed, i.e, re-experienced, by clicking on the specific event poster on our front page.” “We, here at BHF, feel that the honoring of these Blues Artists publicly, in ceremonies like these, is good work, and is appreciated by many, especially the Inducted Blues Artists, no matter what level they are inducted into.” As I prepared to do this article on Dan Marolt, and the Blues Hall of Fame ®,I asked for an interview, as although I knew the man, I didn’t really know the person, except for his deep passion for blues music. What I found out,is he was

“Born near Chicago 1952”. He states that Joliet, Illinois was the perfect place for him to grow up as a typical working class kid. At that time, many Joliet kids learned to play guitar and formed bands, and he was no exception. Some of his favorite music was by Muddy Waters, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Yardbirds, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Byrds, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jimi Hendrix, Buffalo Springfield, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Otis Redding, The Box Tops, Wilson Picket, The Temptations and of course B.B. King. He and a buddy drove into “The City,” in 1970, to see B.B., at his favorite Chicago Lounge, Mr. Kelly’s. It left a lifetime memory, seeing the “King of The Blues,” perform live on stage. For anyone interested in blues,a trip through the Blues Hall of Fame ®, web site is worth the time investment. BHF is also found on FaceBook. This wouldn’t be a big problem except that I just got back in my church after proving that my seizure disorder commonly known as St Vitus dance did not constitute a recreational activity, and I don’t want to get into trouble again. Furthermore, I am being forced to wear dresses at ankle length, which is not only out of fashion, but most people think it looks funny on a guy, which I am. Also, and I don’t want to sound like a chronic whiner, my father, who’s the preacher in our church, is a snake handler. That would be okay, except he makes us kids catch ‘em for him, which takes all day Saturday and most of Saturday night, which is my only time off from school (except Sunday and you can guess what I do all day Sunday). Anyway, how’m I ever gonna be able to fit in with the kids my age with all this weird stuff going on in my life? I need help and I need it bad. Bear in mind that my Pop still believes in all that “spare the rod and spoil the child” stuff. If you don’t have time to advise on all I’ve asked, just concentrate on the snake thing. My cousin Wilford Joe got bit on the big toe two weeks ago Saturday by the nastiest ol’ bush rattler you ever saw. If we hadn’t hung him from the loft and lanced his toe with a hay hook, he would’ve croaked for sure. As it was his leg swole up and turned more colors than a 64 crayon box of Crayolas. ---Nate Hancock I am very proud to be from a hard-working, blue-collar community like Northwest Arkansas. My mother is an immigrant from Mexico, my dad a Vietnam Vet USMC... Hard working middle class people to the core .. Both whom I believe got to live their dreams of settling down raising and providing for a family filled with lots of love.. That’s what I’m grateful for most. That there were people who loved and supported me unconditionally and still do to this day. That’s what inspires me so much to give back, because I was so blessed with so much empowerment. No matter what crazy idea I came up with they supported it always said the same thing, “You can do like whatever you put your mind to”. I really believe that was instilled in me my whole life. Sometimes leading me to be a bit rebellious, but mostly inspiring me to not set limitations on what was possible. Whether it be the NFL, or a rockstar... They never doubted the possibly of achieving it. Nor did I. The truth is that anything I put my mind to seemed to happen.. I believe that is true for anyone for better or worse. Be careful what you wish for cause you will probably get it. The point is to kneel what to do with it when it happens. I actually ended up in a few hot seats, particularly back seats.. I wish that was a sexual pun buts it’s not. I even got arrested immediately after a set at George’s for a Bikes Blues BBQ show for smokin a post show celebratiry spliff.. Suppression at its finest.. A few legal speed bumps here and there and I eventually was able to harness that energy and shift my focus from the former life of a collegiate athlete, to a working class musician.. with minimal collateral damage during the transition.. After getting my head screwed on straight from a very confusing, experimental time walking out on a college football scholarship at 18 years old, 307 lbs, with the dream of makin it in the music biz.. In our semi-southern heartland of a culture it seems your either a far right fundamental Christian, or a far left party animal self-medicated hippie. I now think moderation is probable the best all around answer on those fronts and finding that balance is key in a world that is saturated with consumerisms, advertisements, and religious extremism. I had a lot of emotional stuff to work out from my childhood experience of witnessing a suicide at age 7, to dealing with childhood obesity and depression, initially very introverted and feminine by nature, total mommas boy, to the polar opposite testosterone fueled ego driven locker room alpha male. Music has been a total healing experience for me. I was blessed to have grown up with a musical step-family of a certain “Brothers Band”.. and got a pretty good running start at the musician hustle. Basically since 2005 I’ve toured non-stop, 49 states, 3 countries, 3 independent albums, performed and recorded with Grammy Award Winners, started an entertainment agency, cocreated a record label, worked on set as a location manager for Neil Young, got a record deal produced by Dave Jerden (The Rolling Stones, Janes Addiction, Alice In Chains) with Modern Roots Music Company based out of LA, and recently got the title track to my upcoming album “No Place Quite Like Home” placed on a Hit TV series on Showtime Networks - House of Lies. This song and album for me represents the best of what I have to offer as an artist. It’s a real story, from real experience that really provided resolve in my life about my own identity relating to our community as a whole, and the planet we live on and how it is all connected, how WE are all connected. The song is a milestone built on a foundation of brotherhood, love, and honoring our existence as one people. I happen to be very blessed with health and education, community support.. So many things.. That so many people go without.. I believe in my heart that of you are fortunate to receive these kind of blessings in this life, that it is a duty to share that light with the world around you. That is the Karma. I’ve had the experience of performing on yachts with millionaires, to the streets with the homeless.. I can testify.. We are all One. Through the gift of music and art I have been given and received so many special privileges it really out things in perspective. I am proud and consider my self lucky to speak these words often.. “I am rich beyond my wildest dreams, I just don’t have money”. That keeps me focused on the important things in life. Money is good. Resources are great, but the people in our lives.. That’s where the real value is. See I am a part of you, and you are a part of me.. The reality is that there is No “I”, only a “We”, and we have a choice. There is a mutual relationship in all things of nature, and nature and all things. For every breathe of life, something was sacrificed in its honor. Our breathe, comes from the trees. Which comes from the flowers that wilt into the soil.. I believe that at the root of our culture, we have forgotten this agreement. We tend to take and not remember what we were supposed to give. This song, is my gift to that agreement. I am going to be donating 100% of my digital and online sales to a National Homeless Organization/Non-Profit. It’s something I’m really proud of for myself.. I wouldn’t have it any other way really. This life has been good to me and the least I can do is take something that was created out of that blessing and bless others with it. I’ve been a lot of places, I’ve seen so many faces... For me to selfishly indulge in this life, while knowing there are brothers and sisters of mine out there without basic shelter. All year round, is simply unacceptable. I have made a personal decision to spend the rest of my life paying it forward.. There is no other more important place for me to start than my hometown. As comfortable as it is there believe it or not there are 3600 Homeless in NWA right now, 1/3 of which are women.. That’s unacceptable to me for a region that has the highest employment rate and cheapest cost of living, and not to mention the wealthiest family on Planet Earth. I’m not gonna sit around and wait for others to fix the problem so in asking the community to join me for some of my Album release shows in our region like at George’s on Aug 11, or Patton Alley Pub (Springfield) on Aug 12.. Almost all of our shows are curated and hosted by my production company UNiTE THE ViBE, as a festival type showcase event with vendors and visual artists, and a Non-Perishable Food and Clothing/Blanket drive for local shelter’s. We do this all over the country, and soon to be world.. currently on our US Tour for UTB Presents: “No Place Quite Like Home”. We hope to see you soon! In closing I just want to say thank you to all those that made it possible for me to live and pursue my dreams. Looking forward I want to encourage everyone to show more love, be more encouraging to others, love and respect their selves fully. Life is what you make it. Dream as big as you can dream. I want to tell you about a new Facebook page I have created. It’s called Bob Boyd’s Word on the Street. I would like you to visit it and check it out. I study the Bible every day and in order to understand it better, I re-phrase it in what I call street language. It’s like you and I would talk with each other if we met on the street or in a store or somewhere. I don’t know about you, but I sometimes stumble over the words of some of the Bible translations. I have to paraphrase it so it becomes clear to me. A lot of people who have read my ‘Word on the Street’ version say it has been a big help to them. Every weekend, I add one new chapter, from the book of Genesis, John or Romans. I hope you ll go there and leave me some feedback if you like or don’t like. Although I just turned 80 years old, I still love being in the midst of my old friends and customers. I’m still working behind the counter at Little Rock Frets on Friday afternoons. I’m also teaching advanced piano styling and accordion there on Tuesdays, in Bryon Knight’s new location on Breckenridge Drive. If you haven’t dropped in, come on down. As always, Bryon does a great job with guitar and all stringed instrument repair. Now he has a great amplifier repair department, too. He invites everybody to come and hang out. Just make yourself at home and pick up a guitar and play some, like everybody did at my old place, Boyd Music Center down on 12th Street. I think it’s great that Bryon is providing a place where we can hang out, and pick and grin and visit like we used to. He’s got a really good guitar teacher too, named Mark Jaster. My old friend Peter Read is still loyally serving everybody in our musical community. I enjoy his new on-line version and fully understand why he has gone to on-line publication only. Now we don’t have to go hunt for a place to pick up a printed copy. He deserves a pat on the back (not too hard!) for all these years of dedication he’s put in for us. On my 80th birthday, with my trusty little dog B.J. and my sturdy walking stick, I was walking back up the hill near my home. Suddenly, I was overwhelmed by an inspiration to write a poem. Here it is: The Rhyme of the Ancient Marathoner by Bob Boyd With my trusty stout walking stave, Like that ancient bard sailor of yore, I plodded, gasping, up The Hill As my lungs were screaming No more! It’s been many years, (it was decades ago,) I would have scoffed at this slope, In my glorious fit 40s as a marathoner, Over many a mountain I’ve loped. I recently read an article in a local magazine about a local band. It was a familiar story. Some local guys who had been playing around for several years in different combinations had come together and started playing. They eventually began to mesh and put together a tight little band that begins to see some success locally. The story is still being written in terms of where this band will go and what they might do. Still a familiar story. The band has a young, hot shot guitar player, more talented than most and eager to learn. The thing that struck me was a statement about being content to sit right here at home and play locally. I thought about that for awhile and thought ‘Why?’ Why would you want to stay? With talent like this, what could you possibly gain by sitting here at home? Why not go spread your wings and see what the world has to offer? I get it that some people are content to stay right where they are. No gumption to set out in the world or they’re just happy to be living life where they were raised. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing at all. My own parents have lived their lives in the same small town where they were born and raised. By choice. They could have set off for anywhere to make a life but they chose to lay down roots where they grew up. I get that. I know that my parents did get out and see a piece of the world before they decided to settle in their home town. At least they had something to compare it to before making their decision. It’s the folks who never leave the nest who puzzle me. How do you know what’s out there if you never go? I lived in north central Arkansas for a number of years and worked with high school kids who had never been outside the county they lived in. They never knew what was beyond the county sale barn on Saturday mornings. Don’t get me wrong. I completely get the notion of finding the place of your dreams, the contentment and comfort of familiarity. I get it. What puzzles me about people, especially people with a gift or a talent, are the ones who never give it a shot. The ones who are obviously a notch above the rest who choose to stay right here at home, never seeing what’s beyond the horizon. I almost feel sorry for those folks. They’ll never know. They’ll never know what it feels like to chase a dream, to win the prize, to take a chance and make something happen. They’ll never know what it’s like to fail, to grow as a person and performer because they failed. To pick themselves back up and keep going. Buddy Flett was in Hot Springs recently to be the featured artist at the Hump Night Blues Jam, sponsored by the Spa City Blues Society and hosted by The Big Chill (1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month). Flett grew up in the Shreveport area and saw some success in the bands ‘A Train’ and the ‘Bluebirds’. He played guitar with the late Hubert Sumlin (Howlin’ Wolf) and spent time recording and touring with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, winning a grammy as a result. In the middle of all this success Flett nearly died, stricken with a disease that forced him to re-learn how to play guitar and sing. After he began playing again, Flett would tell his audience from time to time that “…if you hear me play the same chords over and over for a little bit it’s because I’m trying to remember the words to my song…” He had lost his memory, fine motor skills and coordination. He didn’t let that hold him back. Flett re-learned to play guitar. Re-learned songs he had written. And he began to perform again. Today, Buddy Flett is back to performing and enjoying some success. He could have just as easily taken his lumps and chosen to stay at home, a place filled with familiarity and safety. No one would have faulted him for it. No one would’ve been upset. He did the opposite. Flett took his re-learned talents and began to travel and perform again. Not long ago I was in Memphis for the Blues Music Awards. These awards recognize the best of the best in the blues music world. In conjunction with the BMA’s is the annual induction of artists and their works into the Blues Hall of Fame. This year’s class of inductees

included Elvin Bishop. Bishop has had his share of ups and downs in his career. He had left Oklahoma for Chicago and found his way into the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, playing with Butterfield and Michael Bloomfield, leaving his mark as a guitarist. Years would go by and not much notoriety came his way. Bishop continued to play blues and rock and roll, never really out of the scene but certainly not leading the charge. He experienced a nice bump in his career in the 70’s when Mickey Thomas sang “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” on one of Bishop’s albums. The song was a hit and Bishop was back on top. It would be years before Bishop saw notoriety again. He began releasing blues albums and would eventually earn Album of the Year honors at the BMA’s. His career, though far from over, would reach its zenith over the last couple of years as Bishop was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as part of the Butterfield Blues Band) and the Blues Hall of Fame. He took a chance years ago when he left Oklahoma to find his way in the music world. Though a trying journey at times, Bishop chased a dream that lead him around the world. I ran into a horn player named Al Basile backstage at the BMA’s. Basile was up for Instrumentalist of the Year, a category that is a catch all for horn players, harmonica players and folks who don’t play guitar, drums or bass. I’d met Basile several years ago at the BMA’s when he was nominated for the same award. Basile records his own music and he also does time with the Duke Robillard Band. Speaking with him I told him congratulations on his nomination and good luck. His reply was something to the effect of “I don’t expect to win, not with this talent (he was facing some stiff competition). But, man it’s sure nice to be recognized.” Basile has been blowing horn for years, carving a niche in the music world. He continues to press his talent and grow. He took a shot years ago and because of it has become an in demand horn player and talented performer. There are lots of stories like these out there. These are the ones you hear about because these guys took a chance at something they wanted. They didn’t let fear or complacency set in and hold them in place. Did they fail as they went? Likely. Several times probably. Will they fail again? Probably. Does it keep them from trying? Not a bit. They chose to reach out beyond their comfort zones and chase a dream. What would have happened if they had not? What would our view of music be if these people had not been a part of it? Would they have been content to be playing gigs in their home town, knowing they didn’t take a chance? I don’t know. I felt a little sorry for the band in the article when

I had finished reading it. I’ve no doubt they’ll find success locally. They might even play a few gigs outside of town. They’ll make some money and be content to do so. People will come see them. It’s a familiar story. I predict that eventually this band will do one of two things. Either they will find a weekly gig that will pay a little bit and they’ll have a good time, settling in to the every fill-in-the-day gig each week or they will slowly fall into dissatisfaction with the lack of notoriety and playing time and will go separate ways only to be reincarnated in the form of another local band, content to remain just that. Local. There’s nothing wrong with local bands, local music. Hell, I live for the local music scenes around Arkansas and in other cities where I travel. It’s part of the fabric of any travel experience for me. My point to all this is why not take the shot? If you’ve got the talent, take the shot. Go to Nashville or Austin or Los Angeles or New York. Put yourself out there and see how you stack up against the rest of the world. What is the saying going around on facebook? It’s an old saying but still holds true…You always miss 100% of the shots you never take. You’ll always regret 100% of the things you never tried. Something like that. You get the point. Take the shot. Who gives a shit if you miss? At least you took the shot. To me it seems to be a lot easier to be at home knowing I took a chance at something bigger than me. I know, at least for me, I can look in the mirror every day and know that I gave it a try. I’m still taking shots at hopes and dreams and I’m an old, hateful bastard. What have you got to lose? Dear Flabby Dear Flabby, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been an entertainer my entire life (even as a baby, people would laugh at me) and I find that, having weathered the ravages of Bubblegum, Manilow, Disco, Julio, and Metal music, I am come to a discouraging end of the line. That repetitious beat has me insane with similarity overload and the poetry that seldom rhymes reminds me of vulgarized attempts at French Free-form crap and frankly the entire genre is reminiscent of African Square Dance Calling.
