Tactile 1/00—It’s not just about looks…

INTRODUCTION

Do you wander round galleries desperate to touch the works? Is looking at things just not enough? A child’s natural curiosity leads them to want to find out how the world feels, smells and tastes as well as looks. As adults years of being told not to touch stifle this natural instinct. At Tactile we want you to engage with your curious child again. Feel and smell the works, though perhaps draw the line at tasting them a mouthful of fluff isn’t pleasant at any age!

Enjoy…….

Tracy Markie Perthshire Pebbles

Tracy Markey is a felt designer . maker, living and working in Highland Perthshire. All of her work is felted by hand, either needle or wet felted and sometimes a combination of both. Tracy’s work is mostly inspired by colour – bold, bright colours feature very highly in her previous work. However, she is also influenced by the landscape in which she enjoys spending so much time, the dusky pinks and purples of the heather-clad hills, the myriad greens of the forests that surround her and more natural forms are a recurring theme.

Tactile 1/00—It’s not just about looks… Ewa Kuniczak Culzean experience

I have been a feltmaker for over 2/ years, and in all that time I have never lost my enthusiasm and fascination in this most ancient of textiles, which I have endeavoured to promote both as an expressive medium - drawing, painting and sculpting with fibres and as a vehicle for creating unique artefacts for the home, wearables and accessories. In addition, through the books and articles that I write, and the kits I produce, I hope to encourage others to find enjoyment and the thrill of discovery by exploring felting methods through various projects, while developing their skills in order to reach a higher standard of mastery. By participating in this exhibition, I hope to show what can be achieved, and also by allowing the work to be touched, to make it not only accessible, but to allow visitors to experience its quality, and in that way perhaps encourage them to go on to explore possibilities for themselves.

Nicola Glennie Felted fairisle vase Nicola is one of the curators of Tactile 1/00. This came about due to her love of touching fibres and curiosity to see how things are made. Nicola is attempting to use as much as she can of the millions of tonnes of textiles that head to landfill every year. It’s a tall order but she’s trying by handknitting and sewing with scraps of vintage or recycled materials. She is keen to encourage others to do the same and is happy to run workshops in her techniques.

Tactile 1/00—It’s not just about looks… Linn McKellar View West II

I am a Scottish textile.mixed media artist living and working in Alva, Clackmannanshire at the foot of the most beautiful Ochil Hills. I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 0994 with a BA(Hons) in Landscape Architecture but quickly realised my love lay in art and teaching. I worked for the next 01 years in various childcare settings, specialising in arts and crafts. Once my own children arrived, I took time off to be 'full-time mum'. Now that they are well settled in Primary School, I am enjoying a return to creative pursuits – this time incorporating all my life experiences so far! A lot of my artwork comes from memories - people, places, moments in time. I like to use paint and canvas, cloth and fibre, images and text, stitch and tapestry - sometimes all on the same piece! The finished works vary greatly from structured and representational paintings and drawings; to flowing, abstract and layered ‘memories‘.

Tactile 1/00—It’s not just about looks… Lynne Wilson There are no pockets in a shroud

Lynn Wilson has been a practicing textile designer and tutor for twenty years and has taught widely in Scotland, Botswana and Thailand. She is a graduate of Duncan of Jordanston College of Art and Nottingham Trent University. Lynn spent almost five years in Botswana teaching textile design and production. During this time she also worked with the Naro San bush people of the Kalahari Desert, working on product design with indigenous women, developing a craft business. How much security do they really give us? Lynn was artist in residence and exhibited with the National Trust in the Hillhouse, Helensburgh in 1//8. She has been artist in residence in Roselle House, South Ayrshire and has also worked extensively on community art projects.
