P

oised perfectly in the most protected position at Wategos, The Wing House is not only an engineering feat but an architectural masterpiece.

A combination of steel, timber, concrete & glass balance form and function to create a truly magnificent and unique home. The Wing House takes in the dramatic beauty of its surroundings with the Byron Bay Lighthouse Reserve as it’s backdrop and the views over Wategos Beach, the ocean and Julian Rocks before it. Set over 2 levels there is a magical use of space and light and something to marvel from within the home as well as outside it on every turn. Aptly named, the dramatic Wing-like 27.5 Metre span roof makes a truly individual statement whilst providing shelter and filtered natural light. On the lower level of the home there is a guest suite incorporating a kitchen/ living space and a large deck in front of an ensuited bedroom. Beside this via the central garden courtyard is an outdoor bath and a gymnasium or fourth bedroom. Upstairs the main level is designed to mimic a series of timber boxes and a large timber door opens into a magnificent open plan space with 7 metre high curved ceilings, spectacular views to the ocean and an air of understated contemporary elegance. A timber island bench forms the centrepiece of the kitchen which looks straight over the 22 metre lap pool and the Byron Bay Lighthouse above. An elevated office is accessed via a step ladder and also incorporates a perfect sleeping space. Another extensive deck area off the living space offers outdoor entertaining and access to the pool and gardens around the home. The two timber boxes connected to the living space form a second guest bedroom as well as the master suite with WIR and ensuite both finished with blackbutt timber detailing. An inclinator provides an easy alternative to the timber stairs which connect the levels of the home. There is also a large two car garage and a stunning terraced garden created by Secret Gardens of Sydney. Nestled in the National Park reserve, you get the best of both worlds - a sense of being miles from anywhere yet Wategos Beach on your doorstep. This recently completed Peter Stuchberry design will leave lovers of contemporary design breathless and will certainly provide an amazing beach home in a perfect location for its new owner.

eachfront stands apart from other ocean front properties in the South Ballina area for its character, breadth of vegetation and elevated 360 degree views from the DA approved house site. With 1.25km of beach frontage on one of the most beautiful beaches in the Northern Rivers of NSW; beautiful native vegetation supporting extensive wildlife; 3 wildlife ponds; a pocket of pristine rainforest in the SW corner; a beautifully appointed guest/caretaker’s cottage and two enormous storage sheds, the only thing left to do is to build your dream home.

This 46ha (113 acres approx) property offers the ultimate in privacy and seclusion in a truly prime location and a construction certificate has been issued by Ballina Shire Council for a 5 bedroom single storey house on the approved site. BASIX certificate is also approved. An in-ground swimming pool has been approved on the eastern side of the house to connect by boardwalk over the dunes with access to a private beach. There is a large grassed flat area near the entrance to the estate which would make a perfect helicopter pad. Underground electricity and telephone have been connected to and within the property. Electricity, phone and water are connected to the cabin, shed and a pump which pressurizes the line to town

water standard. Four 90,000 litre concrete water tanks collect rainwater from the shed and cabin roofs and have been backfilled and planted out with native vegetation so they are completely hidden. These tanks are now full with 360,000 litres of stored water. The property is fully fenced with wooden posts and barbed-wire fences, and mesh netting is also installed on the eastern boundary. There are many boundary gates, all of which are padlocked making the property secure. The property has 1.25km of direct frontage to the beach, and is only separated from the surf by a narrow Crown reserve of variable width. The reserve is about 105 metres wide on the eastern boundary near the house site. For the past three years an environmental scientist has been engaged to revegetate the land. The bitou has been extensively removed by picking it out of the trees with an excavator and tens of thousands of native trees and shrubs have been planted. Many areas are currently fenced with a three tape electric fence to prevent the wildlife such as wallabies eating the small native plants. The vegetation supports an extensive variety of wildlife from giant 1.5m long goannas and land mullet, to white bellied sea eagles, wedge tailed eagles and whistling kites.

ilderness and luxury are not meant to be synonymous. The concepts are polar opposites. But in these days of space travel, Internet communication and eating anything whether it’s in season or not, a tent fitted with a chandelier and running water in the middle of Africa’s Serengeti savannah is not out of the question. So it transcended that I was led into an enormous tent, the size of my rented Sydney flat, in the middle of the Serengeti. Inside was a king size bed, clad in expensive sheets and down coverings. Crystal decanters sat on the occasional tables, while behind the ‘bedroom’ lay a dressing room fitted with coat stand, brass towel rack, sink with running water and a flush toilet. Beyond that was an open air shower, filled with warm water each evening by my private butler. (Our guide would radio ahead our estimated return time so the water would still be warm.) Such is life with an andBeyond personalized safari itinerary. Ours centred on the best Tanzania has to offer: the game reserves of Lake Manyara, Serengeti plains and the Ngorongoro Crater, an extinct volcanic crater filled with wildlife.

Everywhere we went the wild surrounds were tempered with accommodation akin to a five star hotel in the same way London or New York offers the Savoy or the Four Seasons. At Lake Manyara, a perfect African landscape teeming with wildlife, we spent our nights at the Lake Manyara Tree Camp, a complex of “tree houses” on stilts, fitted with king-sized beds, claw-foot baths, lounges and outdoor showers with views of the stars. In the Serengeti were the aforementioned tents, along with dining quarters of open-sided tents. A separate tent housed the bar stocked with crystal glassware, every favourite tipple and snacks such as fresh coconut with spicy dipping sauce. The Ngorongoro Crater Lodge was a cut above them all: a $1000-plus-a-night affair where enormous crystal chandeliers bedeck virtually every room, from guest lounge to bedroom to bathroom. Zebras graze in the lodge grounds and all rooms overlook the crater, the largest in the world and near which some of the world’s earliest fossils have been found. But this is to digress: the reason people travel to Africa is principally for the animals and these we saw in abundance. The minute we drove into the

Lake Manyara reserve, troops of baboons and blue monkeys appeared. An elephant shook a tree until its dinner fell off. Giraffes grazed as we trundled by in our safari vehicle and when the trees started to thin as we neared the lake, herds of zebra, wildebeest and antelope appeared.

Tented guest area at &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas

On arrival at Lake Manyara the waiting staff handed us cold towels and ginger spiced cocktails. Dinner was an elegant affair, a torch lit meal of fresh soup, roast port and tantalizing dessert. We fell asleep in our luxurious down bedding as hyenas howled and other mysterious noises were made by animals near and far. The next day we headed off for a sunrise viewing of flamingoes on the lake. We later drove past a myriad of birds, lizards, storks, water buffalo, and antelope before our knowledgeable guide Peter chose an acacia tree under which to set up the camp table and lay out breakfast. Not only was there pancakes, fruit, eggs, bacon and sausage, but tea, coffee and Amarula should one wish to partake of liquor in one’s coffee at 8am. At our next destination, Serengeti Under Canvas, the staff performed a song and dance as we arrived. (And Beyond lodge staff take their singing seriously and compete in a choir competition each year.) That night we feasted on barbecued lamb and rested in our luxurious tents, before an early start to take in everything the Serengeti had to offer. We saw cheetahs lazing with their offspring, a pride of up to 20 lions basking in the sun, and a black rhinoceros. The highlight though was seeing a gazelle give birth. Our safari vehicle drove past at just the right time and the newborn took 19 minutes to successfully stand and walk after numerous wobbly attempts. We saw what wildlife documentary makers spend years searching to capture. The Ngonorgoro Crater was even more incredible as we were deposited amid such an abundance of animals. Hippos rolled in a pond while lions lapped from the river just metres away. Grey crowned cranes flew by our vehicle, water buffalo and antelopes and wildebeest were all around. Hyenas trotted along, flamingoes populated the lake and wart hogs snuffled in the ground. It was a Garden of Eden. Leaving as the sun set above the flat-topped trees it was hard not to cry. This was what the world used to be before cities, office towers and suburbs. See it while you can.

The property boasts numerous coffee and bush food trees including lemon myrtle as well as stands of commercial forestry species such as eucalypt trees. There are two bore holes plus a surface water license for the pump on the creek as well as 3-phase electricity to numerous out buildings. A

ll the hard work has been done and all you require is your architect to get started. Seventeen elevated, picturesque and productive acres offering protected ocean views stretching for miles to the north, overlooking Cape Byron to the east and the coastal escarpment to the west, provide the perfect opportunity to create a rural residence or retreat in a grand scale. Centrally located just fifteen minutes from the coast, with easy access to Byron Bay, Bangalow, Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads, the property’s private access is via a sealed driveway through attractive orchards filled with over 200 fruit trees. Adjacent to the driveway, a level pad separate from the main building envelope would provide an excellent location for a manger’s residence, guest accommodation or machinery/toy/hobby shed (STCA). A gradual incline through a small pocket of mature trees, defining the boundary between the orchards and the main residence area, reveals an enormous, virtually level building envelope of approximately 3200 square

metres offering a wide scope of opportunities, including private residence, rural retreat or conference centre (STCA). Multiple water tanks are already in situ as is underground power direct to both the main site and the orchard shed site. The property is a perfect blend of cleared and forested areas with the orchards justifying the property’s primary production status which may provide tax benefits to those eligible. The current owners hold a registered easement protecting their ocean views from any developments and have completed all fauna, waste and fire reports so the site is ready to realize your dream. Two existing cabins on the property can be retained or removed, as can the farm machinery shed. Few properties can boast such expansive views and even fewer offer the opportunity to easily create your dream residence. This truly is an opportunity that should not be missed as properties of this calibre are a rare and precious commodity.

THE POWER & THE GLORY by Mike Butler

There’s great cars and then there are those that beat the rest in every measure. They’re the supercars, and here are some of the best.

Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 The celebrity in the supercar pack W

in four days. Combined that with an insane amount of high performance German engineering throughout the car and you’ve got a world leader.

In 1998, when Volkswagen bought the trademark of the once great French carmaker Bugatti – who at that time was folding like a wet baguette – it immediately lay down the gauntlet to the world announcing it would build the fastest, most powerful and most expensive car in history.

Want one? To date both coupes, the Veyron 16.4 and the Super Sport, which are limited to 300 units are sold out. Out of the 150 roadster versions currently in the world however, the Grand Sport and Grand Sport Vitesse, only a few more than 50 are still available. But just so you know, its special tyres can only be fitted in France and a set will cost around $70,000.

hen a poll of 100,000 fans of Top Gear vote you the best car in the past 20 years, you know you’re onto a good thing, which is what this sleek beast was awarded in September 2013.

Ever since then, Volkswagen has pretty much done that. Its current Bugatti Super Sport has held the world production car top speed for the past three years with a rather swift 431.072km/h. How? An 8.0-litre W16 cylinder, 736kw engine that sucks in more oxygen in a minute than you or I would suck

McLaren P1

Yes, you plug it in to charge it – the hybrid supercar G

reen credentials aren’t typically the domain of these types of cars, but the 2014 McLaren P1 electric hybrid boasts full supercar credentials. Despite a triflingly-small 3.8l engine, it can muster 0 to 300km/h in 16.5 seconds thanks to a fully franked DNA strand that comes out of Formula 1 in its pocket powerhouse. That’s quick. So quick it will actually beat the current McLaren F1 by 5 seconds. Out is its signature three-seat combination with the driver alone at the front, which is a shame but in is an electric motor that can be used for the eerie joy of driving a silent hypercar. It’s being called a game changer in this realm and the suitably wealthy have been snapping them up. If you want one, get in quick because of the 375 that they are making, almost all have been bought. Deliveries began in October. Founded in 1963 by New Zealander Bruce McLaren, McLaren’s true focus

is on Formula 1 racing; these “customer” cars are but a spin off from their main business of winning track trophies. That means this car has true racing credentials with everything unnecessary thrown out to give it the power to weight ratio of something that really should be flying without the need for a road. That means no carpets, no pesky luggage compartments and no fiddly knobs. Except perhaps for one; the Instant Power Assist System button. That gives an instant acceleration boost via the electric motor, which is too cool for words. •

While there are lots of things to be said of the multitude of Gallardo variants that the company has been churning out since 2003, including the excellent Italian police version, this Gallardo’s hook is that it’s basically the same as the Super Trofeo race car. Except you don’t need to wear a crash helmet with it to go down the shops. Regardless, you’ll get there quickly. The now legendary 5.2 litre V-10 engine has been tricked up to produce 419kw and 540Nm to make it the most powerful of the Gallardo line-up (that’s including the race car)

and the widespread use of carbon fibre and aluminium, has pushed this supercharged beast down to under 1500kg. That means if you gave it wings, it would fly, fast. The solution? A specially designed rear wing that produces three times more down force than the standard Gallardo spoiler forcing those high performance tyres into the tarmac. Want one? The choice is yours of yellow, white, grey, or red, while its brake calipers come in red, black, or yellow. •

Certainly, if you wanted to dip your toe into this market you’d be hard-pressed to be unhappy with this purchase. rom a bare cow paddock in 1983 to a beautiful rainforest botanical garden, this is potentially one of the best personal environmental projects in Byron Shire: a totally unique property.

The first of some 20,000 rainforest plants were planted on Christmas Day 1983 and, as with all botanical gardens, this property will only improve in value as it matures. This will be a truly unique legacy to pass on through the generations or an amazing environmental investment property to on-sell in the future. The gardens have been established around the ideal central main house site, well away from the boundaries and protected from wind and the summer sun, yet benefitting from the warmth of the winter sun. Here you can build your dream home, subject to council approval, potentially up to three levels because of the site topography with room also for a three to four car garage. A 200m long tree and palm lined driveway leads to a turning circle with space for another two car garage and workshop or shed. Three phase power is already connected to the property. At the far south-west corner of the property, is a partly built cottage used as a

temporary dwelling during the establishment of the gardens, which could be used a site office during construction of your new home. With the exception of the main house site, the entire 5 acres (approx.) is your garden with the feel of a peaceful and tranquil national park. The body of water on the property has been landscaped to give the illusion that there is a river heading off into the distance. Cleverly and carefully designed, the property requires minimal maintenance: all the rainforested areas require no mowing, brush cutting and little to no weeding. And in winter months, even the grassed areas will require limited mowing. The current owner estimates that the entire property could be easily managed by one person spending one afternoon a week – potentially the ideal rural retirement property. Paradise is also a haven for an extraordinary diversity of bird species including rare species such as the noisy pitta, darter and the night heron. The combination of rainforest and a body of water has created a habitat for over a hundred observed species and there is also a breeding Koala colony. The property is situated in a quiet country lane, a no through road, and is just five minutes drive to Mullumbimby and fifteen or so to Byron Bay.

Tsukiji Fish Market It’s difficult to find a bad meal in Japan. by Sarah Swan

T

here is a simplicity, a freshness and a quality to the Japanese food that is second to none. The Japanese are extremely proud of their cuisine and with good reason. Tsukiji Fish Markets, one of more than ten wholesale markets that handle the distribution of fish, meat, produce and flowers in metropolitan Tokyo. It is also the world’s largest and busiest, handling over 2,000 tonnes of seafood per day. There are rules around visiting Tsukiji and there is no point whatsoever trying to go off-piste. Not that you couldn’t, perhaps, but the systems in place are so good that your visit becomes easy, still adventurous, never do you feel like a tourist or that you are being merely tolerated. The Japanese have a grace and such impeccable manners. Just do as you’re told and don’t get in the way! Should you forget, there are plenty of signs to remind you at many a corner.

Do not enter areas restricted to authorized personnel!

Do not obstruct traffic!

Do not bring large bags or suitcases into the market!

Do not enter the market in high heeled shoes or sandals!

Do not bring small children or pets!

Do not smoke in the market!

Do not touch anything!

If you are keen and being a part of the live tuna auction is a necessary part of your visit, then you need to be on site by 5am latest. Go to the information centre, line up, request your reservation, hope for the best. Only 120 people are allowed access to each auction and it’s first in best dressed. And always full. That’s probably why I’ve never made it. An hour travelling in the darkness in mid-Tokyo-Winter to be rejected is more than I could handle. Post-auction, the Wholesale Market does open to the public at 9am. An hour spent wandering is an incredible experience. I could do hours more – live eels, whole tuna, whitebait, abalone, razor clams, everything – including some I was too scared to ask about, or perhaps too scared to know. It’s a buzzing hive of activity, automatic trolleys whizzing up and down, restaurant owners, supermarket chain purchasing managers, providers, and the odd tourist getting in the way or run over. It’s not for the faint hearted in the there but I can highly recommend it. I imagine I’ll keep visiting, each time I find myself lucky enough to be back in that great city. The market itself is due to be picked up and moved in 2016 to a site at Toyosu. Tsukiji Fish Markets are closed on Sundays and some Wednesdays – it’s worth checking before you head off... www.japan-guide.com/e/e3021.html

quite simply, this is food worth queing for

Of course, there is another reason for the committed Tsukiji trek. The feeding of the belly. Just inside the main gate to the market at Shin-ohashi St, you’ll find the wholesale fruit and veg market, and in amongst it all, the most wonderful snaky long lines of eager breakfasters, patiently standing, drooling over laminated images of toro and salmon and yellowtail. 5 years ago, my memory is of a short angry Japanese woman coldly taking orders and pointing her finger sharply if you strayed even slightly West of the queue. This time, the sweet mannered young gent still liked us to be orderly in our line, and in fact, would often move us in file from West to East and back West again – I imagine there was a logic there but whatever it was, it kept us warm as we stared hungrily at our laminated food and rocked quietly back and forth awaiting the 2 out, 2 in system to eventually bring our turn. Quite simply, this is food worth queuing for. It’s simple. Rice, your selection (made outside) of red tuna and fatty tuna (toro – belly), of tuna and salmon, tuna and yellowtail, whatever it may be – along with fresh wasabi of course, a steaming bowl of miso and pickles; and the obligatory green tea. Coats and gloves and skarves and hats are hung on the wall behind you and large wide smiles are exchanged. I have failed in both attempts to get the name of this amazing little hole in the wall – but after much googling and investigation have discovered it is Sushi-Dai – 2nd place up on the right, from the fish market side. It will have one of the longest queues but we have waited no more than half an hour both visits and as I said, it’s a queue worth being in, so don’t hesitate! Still one of the best meals I’ve had in Japan...twice!

PRADA O

n the surface of it all, serving up lairy prints is an altogether acceptable, if a touch obvious, expression for a spring collection. But as is typical of the work penned by Miuccia Prada, it’s never quite that straightforward. Where the natty florals and Hawaiian-style prints at first evoke breezy, resort holidays, Prada subverted the idea of tropical paradise with what she describes as a more ‘menacing’ undertone. On closer inspection, her seascapes occasionally resemble apocalyptic wastelands—a commentary on mankind’s predilection for waging conflict in far-off, idyllic locales. At

least the Prada man can be somewhat relaxed about his war-torn vacation: slouchy silhouettes were the order of the day, from loose trousers to baggy silk shirting in rich jewel tones. Those trousers were the perfect foil to the outspoken prints, rendered in more business-like pinstripe, greys and brown. But then, that is precisely the kind of contrast that Miuccia Prada always finds to irresistible. Whether it be war and peace, daring and restraint, darkness and light, Prada proves that you can’t truly appreciate one without the other.

BURBERRY PRORSUM F

ashion is clearly having a moment. It seems the creative minds behind the world’s biggest fashion houses have been brushing up on their art history and whilst there have found a bountiful stream of inspiration to stitch into spring summer 2014. Christopher Bailey at Burberry Prorsum is another who has turned to the art world, taking in a spot of literature on the way. In case the bright, poppy colour palette and relaxed tailoring didn’t give the game away, Bailey helpfully named the collection ‘Writers and Painters’. As one who is consistently patriotic in his influences, Bailey

90

w w w.uni quees t at es.c o m. a u

name checked Brits, declaring it “a celebration of artistic and intellectual spirit, with a nod and a wink to Alan Bennett and David Hockney”. Fitting, given the runway showcase marked the venerable English label’s move from Milan to the London Fashion Week schedule. Taking a light approach, garments were constructed from cashmere, silk and linen—outwear often consisted of gossamer knit tanks, shirt jackets or paperweight versions of the signature trench. The odd burst of graphic spots and stripes amped up the artiness.

ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA I

t’s quite extraordinary that after four generations, this Italian fashion house remains a family-owned business. Even though the brand celebrated their 50th anniversary earlier in 2013, it is still considered a bastion of classic men’s tailoring. But having been in the game for so long, even if consistently managing to stay on top of that game, there comes a point where it’s time to mix things up a little. That time is now, as Stefano Pilati steps in to take the reigns of creative director for Spring 2014. It’s a big step for Zegna, the first time in their history that they have appointed a

marquee designer—and they don’t come with much better pedigree than the likes of Pilati, most recently head designer at Yves Saint Laurent. In the spirit of change, Pilati dutifully mixed things up for the label, with pared back detailing seen on single button blazers (two for a double breast), belted jackets and sleek topcoats. Embossed suiting and injections of colour had the dual purpose of emboldening the wearer and re-energising the label itself.

M

agic mushrooms, acid hues, bubblegum brights… Paul Smith has taken a trip, in both senses of the word, through the 1970’s for spring summer 2014. To be fair, Sir Paul has never been one to hold back on colour—and, really, a Paul Smith runway presentation without generous swathes of it just wouldn’t be right. But here he included a level of asymmetry and randomness to proceedings that lent a surreal appeal to suits and sportswear and pieces that were an amalgamation of the two. An indiscriminate slash of fuschia across the bottom of a blazer, for instance;

94

w w w.uni queest at es.co m. a u

the geometric blocks of colour adorning knitwear; or those mushrooms making an appearance again in black and white patterned suiting. While colour and print are Smith’s signatures, there was plenty to offer the more conservative customer beyond the psychedelia, albeit still filtered through a seventies world-view: think patchwork leather jackets, embroidered chambray (there’s those mushrooms again) and checked trousers. As always the sophistication was ever present, even when the designer was indulging in his most playful whimsies.

BOSS M

enswear and London are forever inextricably linked given that the British capital is home to the planet’s most famous strip for men’s tailoring, Savile Row. And given the notorious greyness of the city’s weather, it’s rather fitting that the powers that be at BOSS should turn to London for inspiration for their autumn 2013/14 collection, moving from the legendary row to Baker Street (because Sherlock Holmes’ personal style is just as sharp as his powers of deduction) to Heathrow, where business lounges are replete with the world’s movers and shakers dressed

to tailored perfection. There are elements of Cool Britannia in slim-fitting suiting and relaxed, un-constructed jackets. The English heritage vibe is seen in sleeveless hunting jackets and earthy shades of sand, stone and rust. Even the details in the collection read like a tourist guide as Piccadilly collars are teamed with Chelsea boots. Check shirts with rolled up denim hint at the punk scene but the thing that really sets the city’s sensibility apart are those dapper details: cravats, pocket squares and flat cap bring on Brit chic.

LOUIS VUITTON

C

asting his eye to the New York of the sixties, seventies and eighties— specifically through the prism of pop art icon Andy Warhol—men’s studio director Kim Jones imagines what might have been. At the time, Vuitton’s legendary leather goods were really taking off Stateside, but the French fashion house wouldn’t dabble in ready-to-wear until the turn of the millennium. So for his spring summer 2014 pre-collection, Jones took the liberty of retrospectively dressing Warhol and The Factory muses for each decade they ruled the streets and clubs of Manhattan. And for this posse,

98

w w w.uni quees t at es.c o m. a u

it’s all relaxed sophistication with an artistic flair. Opening in the 1960’s, bull leather bomber jackets are teamed with chinos for urban cool, while Breton tees and check shorts recall summer weekends poolside in the Hamptons. By the seventies, the checks have migrated to groovy blazers and naturally, corduroy suits are de rigeur, albeit softer this time around. Things get a little louder in the eighties, of course, with splashy prints that wouldn’t be out of place on the back of a break-dancer and suave-butshowy suiting worthy of Wall Street.

The two bedroom, one bathroom, home has been renovated to include modern conveniences while keeping the charm of the original hard wood beams and timber frame windows. The one bed studio features a large bathroom with claw-foot tub and living area with kitchenette. It lends itself to multiple purposes as a guest space, teenager retreat or home office. The property is fully council approved and also features ample water storage, a potable bore, water easement to Possum Creek, a northeast aspect, rooftop PV solar panels, low maintenance botanical gardens and a mature fruit orchard.

here are very few places on earth more beautiful than this property and the country that surrounds it. Set on 89 acres bordering Australia World Heritage-listed rainforests of Nightcap National Park, one would be pushed to find a more magical spot.

With 1.5 kilometres of Terania Creek frontage the property boasts some magnificent stands of rainforest and sits nestled between two ridgelines in the valley beyond The Channon village. The popular and dramatic Protestor Falls is just a minute’s drive from the front gate and the walks through the Nightcap National Park are also breathtaking. 64 acres of the land climbs up and over the ridgeline to the west of Terania Creek Road and consists of wonderful rainforests, natural springs and some

PRADA I

t’s always apparent that art heavily informs the work of Miuccia Prada—in fact, it’s fair to say that art is one of the few predictable elements in the designer’s work. She’s a known collector and exhibits at her own modern art space, Fondazione Prada. Last season Prada showcased the lesserknown, delicate side of Andy Warhol’s talent; for spring 2014, she used her clothes as a showcase for contemporary artists. The brief to the six artists she commissioned: “an active, strong woman”. The boldness of bright faces emblazoned across skirts, dresses and coats were partly a political

expression of female strength, resembling Mexican activist wall art (trivia fact: Mrs Prada holds a PhD in political science). Indeed, as a paen to bold women it was clear: these were not clothes for the shy, retiring type. The female form—in particular, the bust—was exaggerated with skin-baring cutouts and bright, brassiere-style panelling. The revolution, in Miuccia Prada’s world, is filled with cartoonish colour and crafty embellishment, a collage of glamorous furs and crystals next to textured sporty ribbed tanks and leg warmers.

BURBERRY PRORSUM

I

n dedicating his spring collection to the ‘English Rose’, Christopher Bailey set out to call to mind a most prim and proper Miss Britain. The candy palette, shin-length pencil skirts and tweed cardigans proffer the sort of conservatism that suggests she makes a living educating children or tending to books with glasses perched on the tip of her perky nose. Of course, keeping up appearances is a national custom in England and it was apparent that beneath the cautious silhouettes something else was going on altogether. The blouses may have been buttoned all the way up,

126

w w w.uni queest at es. c o m. a u

but they also happened to be see-through. Bailey did give his muse pretty, Bridget Jones-style big knickers to preserve her modesty—but we only know this because they were plainly visible through sheer English lace. Not quite the thing for the local grammar school, then. Cashmere, jewelled embellishments and polka dots all conspired to play up the English Rose’s more demure side. A clear rubber jacket, though, suggested that when you really see through her, she may not be quite as sweet as she smells.

CHANEL T

he emergence of summer brings with it thoughts of sunshine, holidays and the outdoors—enough to shake Karl Lagerfeld out of the dark broodiness that infused his winter collection and into an altogether more upbeat mood for Cruise 2014. Although one can’t quite picture the prolific designer having the time to settle in for a test match—much less the interest to do so—he wants to be certain the Chanel woman can remain at her chicest in the event that she decides to take to the pitch for a friendly hit. So he has given her cricket whites with an exaggerated V-neck

sweater and her very own Chanel bat and pads, no less. When she’s not feeling so active, high-rise, wide-legged trousers with luxuriously laidback crepe tees see her hosting guests under the gazebo. Kaftans and onepieces in beige and black take her to the yacht: the knotted rope heel of her matching pumps keeping in the nautical theme. And when she craves unbridled glamour, there always awaits a Chanel melange of tulle, beading and embroidery to satisfy.

CHRISTIAN DIOR C

ould there be anywhere more apt to showcase a Cruise collection to the world than Monte Carlo? Monaco is famous for its extravagance, fast cars and, yes, yachts—so if a woman were to be taking an actual cruise anywhere, odds are one would find her here. It’s the first time in three years that creative director Raf Simons has elected to put Cruise on the runway. Simons being Simons, though, this was never going to be a collection filled with the obvious resort-friendly sundresses in nautical stripes. No, the Christian Dior woman elegantly drapes herself across the bow of her

130

w w w.uni queest at es. c o m. a u

catamaran in a metallic bathing suit peeking beneath delicate lace. Full skirts, coat dresses and palazzo trousers brought the unbridled femininity that is de rigueur at a Dior collection, while hemlines and necklines revealed Simons’ fondness for asymmetry. One of Monsieur Dior’s most famous customers was Grace Kelly, a resident of Monaco—indeed, the princess of. Whether a chic red pantsuit or a floaty frock with vibrant slashes of colour, one suspects the princess would approve.

here’s just something about the French woman: inherently glamorous and yet exuding a bohemian insouciance. Thousands have been inspired by her elegant indifference and so it’s perfectly logical that Louis Vuitton’s women’s design director Julie de Libran look to her Gallic sisters for cruise 2014. The French woman possesses the kind of effortless chic that comes from throwing a tailored white blazer over a slouchy drop-waist chambray sundress. Equally, she manages to infuse men’s tailoring with a feminine nonchalance, be it with a man style overcoat or a pantsuit in

linen or tweed. French attributes can be seen in the way she embraces the unexpected… and doesn’t give a damn. She down plays her slinky miniskirts with oversized tees and barely there flats and is all the sexier for it. But she’s not averse to high glamour, naturellement. As comfortable as she is in calf-grazing denim skirts, she occasionally longs for floorsweeping silk or sheer lace. It’s just how the French woman works: fluid, yet impulsive. Whatever it is that sets her apart, it just works.

CALVIN KLEIN C

onsidering this Spring collection marked something of a milestone for Francisco Costa—his ten year anniversary as creative director for Calvin Klein Collection—few would have begrudged him the opportunity to roll out a sort of ‘greatest hits’ collection. But no such thing transpired. Certainly, the minimalism that is so inherent to the brand was present at moments, but in place of sleek, wall-to-wall futurism, Costa infused the show with crafty, almost unfinished, detailing. It was a rawer, more textured take on the label’s signature aesthetic: still appropriately modern

134

w w w.uni queest at es. c o m. a u

but reveling in more organic elements such as frayed hemlines, exposed seams, patchwork paneling and fringing which created a wonderful sense of movement on his dresses. Art once again provided a source of inspiration, with Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Man Ray among those cited as references for the collection. Whoever the muse, it’s reassuring to know that after a decade in the job, Costa is still willing to push the boat out. It’s clear this is one designer who doesn’t intend to rest on his laurels.

South For The Summer

Two hours out of Sydney and a million miles from the North Coast, NSW’s Shoalhaven is deliciously different. by Mike Butler

L

ooking for a quick, stylish getaway with particularly good food thrown in? If you’re from Sydney, the Shoalhaven on the South Coast is one of the best. Loosely defined as the stretch between Berry to Ulladulla, it was settled particularly early, almost 200 years ago, for the fine reason of its dark floodplain soils and easy fishing. For the uninitiated, it’s quite different from the coast north of Sydney. More hilly, that bit greener and typically a couple of degrees cooler, the area is a perfect city escape that combines quality with fun motoring.

While the cabriolet may be the weakling of the 911 range, with the smallest, least powerful engine and more weight (about 70kg) than the coupe, you’d hardly notice. With its 7-speed gearbox, it still sprints to 100km/h in just 4.8 seconds making it indecently rapid by any normal measure and has all the hallmarks of quality. The 2014 model is yours for around $285,000 off the floor.

One feature of this part of the South Coast are its pocket towns that have been small enough to retain their own character. Berry is biggest and has the best shopping but arguably the most charming is Currarong. To Whichever way you approach it – whether it’s dropping down the Kangaroo Valley from Bowral or straight through the rollercoaster stretch of get there, turn left at Nowra and drive through achingly green floodplain Pacific highway that connects it to Sydney – this is a driver’s holiday. There country until you get to the former fishing village that still has vintage Massey Tractors parked in some front yards. There’s a stunning beach, are plenty of snaking roads and gorgeous scenery, so choose transport that’s up to the task. Ours was the new Porsche 911 Cabriolet, probably the great bushwalks, two shops, funky renovated fisherman’s cottages to stay in and the kangaroos come out at night. It’s that cute. The best place to best convertible on the road today. stay is Aurora cottage. This sea shack built for two has uninterrupted views Its first test, the famous Kiama bends, saw it remain glued to the tarmac down the beach and has been beautifully restored by heritage architect at the legal 80km/h while most would be firing off into the shrubbery Robin Graham who has added the welcome luxuries of a four poster at that speed. It’s second, a winding hill climb to the top of Cambewara bed, twin nozzle shower and excellent gas cooking range. probably the most relaxed rooms in the world

Another Shoalhaven hook is its wineries, a rarity so close to the sea. Wine has been grown around the Shoalhaven since the 1800’s and today, 12 vineyards means you can combine wine tastings with lazy mornings on the beach or energetic bush-walks along the escarpment. With over 1,000 Australia and international medals collectively to their name, its Chardonnays and Semillons, which thrive in the more moderate maritime climate, are particularly good. Also try the Savagnins, Tannats and Arnes’, all varieties rare in Australia but perfect for this region. Max Staniford of Fern Gully wines says “I often hear customers say that the Shoalhaven reminds them of the Hunter Valley 30 years ago before largescale commercial concerns bought up the vineyards. Ours are relatively small and owner operated.” Keep your eye out for the 2013 vintages. Last summer’s hot dry conditions have produced an excellent season for both the whites and the reds. Unsurprisingly, its 199km coastline features plenty of surf and protected beaches but the most outstanding are the white sands of Jervis Bay. They are indeed toothpaste white and its clear turquoise waters are home to a grand marine park teaming with dolphins all year and whales between March and November. to see them even closer. If you don’t want to get your feet wet, get a luxury charter from dophinwatch.com.au and the dolphins will come to you. The best place to stay in this area is also one of the most extraordinary any where in the country. Paperbark camp is part eco-lodge, part luxury glamping and 100 per cent foodie heaven. The concept is as simple as it is exclusive. Twelve five-star tents for two with private outdoor baths and the softest bamboo linen on beds as big as life rafts in probably the most relaxed rooms in the world. Then join it together with a restaurant elevated to the tree tops where a private chef serves food focussed on the best of the region. If you dine outside your company will include cheeky possums that charm you by the table-side. It’s current chef, Chilean Emilio Erazo is an extraordinary talent. Having trained under the legendary Joan Rocca in Barcelona, Erazo worked on Easter Island before coming to Paperbark and now he’s injecting something special into every meal. When Unique Estates visited our evening started with a roasted capsicum gazpacho combined with an avocado sorbet and the audaciousness of a popcorn kernel on top. What

followed was perfectly prepared kangaroo, kingfish, then chocolate cake, peanut ice cream and blood orange. This is Erazo’s second season here and since coming he’s established a thriving restaurant vegetable garden. I

f you had to attach an adjective to Queenstown, it would be thrilling. From the moment you approach its airport through that V-sided valley, it starts. As you drop below its jagged snow-capped peaks being buffeted by invisible winds, the valley sides – yes, both sides – feel like they’re only a stone’s throw from the wings because they actually are. It’s one of hell of an entrance for a holiday in thrill seekers central. And while most know the skiing is pretty good here along with bungy jumping and all manner of other ways to throw yourself off heights and live to tell about it, deeper in the mountains is one of its best kept secrets that’s guaranteed to give anyone with a driving licence a buzz. As one of the most important winter testing grounds for automotive industry, the Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground is the place where cars and tyres get tested and refined away from prying eyes before being launched to market. Needless to say if you turned up with your handycam at the gate, security would be bundling you off. But in a blistering win for the average fellow, BMW will not only chopper you into the testing grounds but teach you the moves normally reserved for the drivers of diplomats and high-risk CEOs. Want to know what it feels like to power slide at a 170km/h? This is for you. It’s not cheap, but it’s cool, it’s challenging and very secret squirrel and most importantly will leave you with a silly grin and probably an even better driver than you were before. The day begins with an early morning helicopter pick up from a field near Millbrook Resort, where you stay as part of your ice driving package. Set on 500 acres low in the valley and with its own 27-hole golf course, restaurants and spa and gym facilities, you can see why people like Bill Clinton and Nelson Mandela have stayed here when in Queenstown. When Unique Estates visited, the US women’s college ski team, were using it as their base for their Northern Summer training. Ten minutes of peak-skimming flying sees you deposited well above the tree line to a totally white network of racetracks, skidpans and snow obstacles. Here you’re whisked away into a briefing room for the fundamentals of driving on snow and ice.

164

In a nutshell, it’s hard to keep control and even harder to stop but the BMW X-drive is one of the best cars to do that in because of its ability to intelligently transfer it power to each wheel according to what it needs. The German car maker calls it the world’s most intelligent all-wheel drive system, and after a follow-the-leader trundle around a track to get a feel the latest X3’s, X5’s and X6’s in both deep snow and icy roads, it’s off to a steep ramp show the X-drive’s credentials. With one side totally ice slick and the other bare concrete, the X-series works a treat sensing the surface and directing all of the engine’s power into the two wheels that can grip to take it up the ramp and then down another with hardly a slip to be seen. It’s impressive in a sedate low-speed sort of way but it’s after this that real fun begins, starting with a 400m-diameter skidpan with the intention of power sliding your vehicle around it as fast as you possibly can. It’s purpose is to feel the balance of power and traction of the car as you oversteer it to throw the back wheels out into a permanent slide while using the front wheels for the direction and drive. Easy? Even with the X-drive, no, it’s as hard as hell. But after a few 360 degree spins and encouragement from the instructors over the CB radio to cut loose, most crack a high-speed circular slide along with an ear-to-ear grin to go with it. Just a word on BMW’s instructors because these guys really know what they’re doing. One comes direct from the company’s German security driver training section and all the others have bone fide racing qualifications, which they demonstrate after the skidpan exercise with joy rides to show what these cars can do with somebody who really knows what they’re doing behind the wheel. It’s all casual conversations with a couple of handbrake turns thrown in here and there as you hurtle around a course far quicker than you thought possible. At one point I looked at the speedo and we were doing something that looked like 170km/h. That’s fast enough on a real road but with snow as your road surface, and with the car going sideways half the time, it’s insanely quick and a timely reminder that there are good drivers and then there are professional drivers. After that, the next exercise proves the most challenging but the coolest, a high-speed J turn. If you don’t know what that is, it’s when a reversing car seemingly instantaneously spins around to face forward to then rocket off into the sunset which is all very Hollywood stunt man but “Is a particularly important manoeuvre if you need to get out of somewhere in a hurry,” said our German instructor matter of factly. And this is how you do it: reverse in a straight line fast without turning your head, it’s crucial to use your side mirrors to see where you’re going otherwise you’ll get in a real pickle. Then, slip the car into neutral, spin the wheel 360 degrees one way then 360 degrees the other as fast as you can with moving your head or touching the brake and you’ll throw the car into a 180-degree turn that will see the car facing forward allowing you to accelerate away, foiling your pursuers and stunning onlookers. That’s followed by a timed slalom course designed to apply all that’s been learned during the day from controlled slides, smooth acceleration and smart cornering, again on ice and snow, which draws out everyone’s competitive streak. That’s then followed by a final challenge, heats of

drag races to see who accelerates best. It’s a boy – and girl – racer’s dream come true as we compete in the faltering afternoon sun to beat the next person. It’s a great way to end a day doing what this part of the world does best; throwing up enormous possibilities in one of the most magical alpine environments anywhere. Whether you come specifically to do the X-Drive Alpine experience or bolt it on as a day off the slopes during your next Queenstown ski trip, you’re guaranteed to get a thrill and be a better driver for it. And if nobody believes that, they’ll give you a certificate to prove it.

* BMW Alpine X-Drive days take place over an 8-week period starting in August on the Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground on the South Island of New Zealand. The site is about one hour’s drive from Queenstown, but participants are flown in for the day via helicopter. The cost is $2000 which includes two nights at Millbrook resort and some meals.
