Tragedy upon Tragedy This is issue 888 of The Ibizan. In reference to the store the Chinese place in number 888 as a number that denotes treble good fortune, until midweek the planned headline was ‘Lucky, Lucky Lucky’. We had planned a special feature on some of our readers’ accounts on how good fortune had smiled upon them in Ibiza. However to run with that headline this week would be
in the poorest of taste. It has become a week of tragedy upon tragedy. Two young British men aged just 21 and 22 years have lost their lives this week. And while we report on 3 people in serious condition following balcony falls, these cannot compare to the grief of the Irish mother in Mallorca who, having heard her 14 year old son’s calls for
help as he clung to the balcony, could not save him from falling to his death. And as we go to press we are receiving reports of another tourist who has drowned in Ibiza. We feel sure those who submitted their ‘lucky’ stories will agree, this 888 has been anything but. Our thoughts are with all those affected.

It seems that no sooner have we finished a report on some new restrictive ordinance from one town hall, another announces yet more rules and regulations in what is becoming the summer of no. News Three British Balcony Falls In 2 Weeks
Local newspapers in the U.K. have published tributes from friends of harry Kingsland, left. “I knew Harry while I was out working in Ibiza and honestly he was the nicest lad I’ve ever met. "He was honest, polite and absolutely hilarious. Harry would be the main reason I loved going to work, if I was in a bad mood I knew he’d cheer me up with his jokes. When I heard the news I was absolutely heartbroken that such a young loyal and lovely lad had been taken away from us.” Sash Roughley, Speaking to Birmingham Live
23yr Old, Playa d’en Bossa, 19th July Tolga Aramaz, a Labour party councillor for the London district of Edmonton Green fell from the second floor of apartments on Calle Begònies onto the awning of the restaurant below, La Dolce Vita. Despite landing on the awning, he received multiple injuries and was admitted to the ICU of the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Polyclinic where his condition is critical. The victim was on the balcony with friends, moments before his fall. Police sources believe the fall to be an accident.
42yr Old, San Antonio, 17th July The male British tourist fell from the first floor of a hotel in San Antonio. The night shift receptionist had seen the man arrive with a friend at around 2.30am then heard no noise until the victim fell at around 5.40am. The man was taken to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Polyclinic with severe polytrauma, where he remains in ICU with acute pain as a result of the polytrauma. The hotel director speculated that drugs/alcohol & balconing was involved however this has not been substantiated.
41yr Old, San Antonio, 11th July Emergency services were notified at 9.55pm that a woman had fallen from the second floor of the apartment block Es Vedra Workers, located in Calle Es Vedra. The female had sustained multiple injuries including a fractured femur and was admitted in a “very serious state” to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Polyclinic. The cause of her fall is unknown, the Guardia Civil are investigating. On the 2nd July, an English man was seriously injured when he jumped from the second floor of his San Antonio hotel. It has transpired that traffic agents wished to question him over a hit and run accident and he jumped from the building to escape.
Mallorca Mallorca has seen 7 tourist deaths from balcony falls this year alone, the latest a 14yr old Irish boy. His mother heard shouts for help and found the youth hanging from the balcony rails, despite her efforts to save him, he fell and later died as a result of his injuries. Police have suggested he lost his balance in a freak accident while standing on a chair on the balcony.
21 Year Old Briton Dies From Head Injuries After Being Punched When Trying To Break Up A Fight This article was published online on the morning of 18th July. Though his identity was known, we did not publish details as the family had not yet been advised. Local newspapers in the U.K. have now published tributes to the young man, Harry Kingsland. Though not mentioned in the official report issued very soon after the event, it seems clear from overwhelming testimony that Harry was assaulted when he tried to break up a fight in his apartment block. Our thoughts are with Harry’s family and friends.

22 Year Old British Tourist Dies Hours After Arriving in Ibiza A young British tourist died at 1.30a.m. today, Friday 20th July, at San Antonio medical centre. The individual had only arrived in Ibiza on holiday a matter of hours before. He was taken to the health centre by friends together with volunteers from the San Antonio West End charity, 24/7. In a statement issued by the health service, it says that the individual suffered a heart attack following the ingestion of (unspecified) drugs. All efforts by paramedics to revive the person using CPR proved unsuccessful. A police investigation will be launched as is mandatory in any death which is related to drugs. The emergency service has appointed a psychologist to assist the people connected to the deceased.

News Balearics to Ban All-Inclusive Alcohol? Balearic Government consider a ban on holidays
that offer alcohol as part of an all-inclusive tariff.
In a move that will put the Balearics further out of step with the rest of the Mediterranean holiday market, the regional government are considering a ban on the all-inclusive tariff type that has become popular in recent decades. The initiative is being considered as a method of reducing excessive alcohol consumption, with the open bars felt to be responsible for much of the drunken behaviour of tourists. The idea is that holidays could be offered with all other aspects of all inclusive – so essentially full board, but not the alcohol element. Drinks from the bar would have to be paid separately by the guests according to consumption. No official announcement has yet been made but director general of tourism for the Balearics Antoni Sansó told the Diario de Mallorca, “We don’t intend to prohibit alcohol because you can’t but we can regulate it. Rather than put limits on consumption or time, we propose that alcohol does not come into the equation but it’s not easy. The Government wants to rely on the same formula used for half-board and full-board packages in which they charge for alcohol separately.” Government tourism leaders want hotels to look at offering added value in other ways. No specific ideas have been put forward, but they are talking about ‘environmental tourism’, leading some media speculation that cultural trips and activities are to be promoted. The Government have confirmed they will consult with the individual municipalities. Though the all-inclusive tariff type holiday has seemingly peaked in popularity and fallen away a little in recent years, it still comprises between 15% and 20% of the Balearic tourist market.
Editorial Comment I expect a lot of bar and business owners reading this report will have an initial positive reaction to this news. The allinclusive holidays have been the scourge of the traditional strip businesses for many years. Cala Llonga is a good example, with every hotel in the bay all-inclusive. The local community there have had to work hard to pull people out of the hotel confines, and had good success doing so, but still they get most of their bar business after the midnight curfew in the hotels. But also think of this. A good many people will not start their holiday search as Ibiza, then looking for available tariff types. They will start with all-inclusive, and then look at available locations – of which Ibiza would no longer be on the list. As fundamentally flawed as it is, as often ghastly as it is, the all-inclusive model is popular for a reason. It is popular for families in being able to set a reasonable budget for their holidays. And particularly with families including young children it is popular in allowing a holiday where the parents can actually say ‘yes’ and not ‘no’ all day long. All inclusive surely has its place, and I think that when fully considered people will realise this potential regulation is yet another Balearic Barmy Army move in alienating ourselves from the wider tourist market. We already have the controversial tax, we are heavily regulating entertainment – in some ways to he point of effectively banning it, we are already heavily regulating opening hours and conditions – are we really that much better than everywhere else that we can afford to keep piling on reasons NOT to come? There is also the media aspect. Whatever the rights and wrongs, make no mistake the British media will rip the Balearics to bits for this initiative, even the consideration of the

Ibiza Town Council are the latest municipality to add to the seemingly ever growing number of controls and regulations affecting its residents, tourists and businesses. Though the Town Hall state that the controls are all aimed at the protection of minors in the fight against under age drinking, the effects are bound to be seen also in being another step to curb the party people culture. The new regulations are being passed in a session of Ibiza Town Council today, Thursday 19th of July, however there is as yet no information on whether they will be in force immediately. The regulations, as reported by the Council in a statement, are enacted in the interests of “child protection and prevention from alcohol abuse,” as well as “ensuring minors are not targeted in the advertising of alcoholic beverages, and do not have access to purchase alcoholic beverages.” The Council have stated that their position is one where the rights of the child to protection outweigh the rights of the adult to consume.
Regulations The regulations include:A prohibition on the sale of alcohol from all shops, bodegas, petrol stations etc, from 10 pm to 8 am. A prohibition on the advertising of alcoholic beverages aimed at minors, “which use messages or arguments aimed at this age group and which induce them to drink”. In addition, you cannot use the image or voices of minors or young people in the advertising of alcoholic beverages. A prohibition on the advertising of alcoholic beverages in municipal facilities, sports venues, exhibition halls and educational centres to which minors can access.

The Consell de Eivissa, together with the local action group Leader, have presented new labelling for the traditional varieties of vegetables grown in Ibiza’s soils. Their aim is to reintroduce the local, clearly labelled, produce into markets this summer. The programme focusses on the indigenous vegetables that have been formed after centuries of product selection such as the la patata roja (red potato), pebrera blanca (white pepper), tomate de penjar (tomato), meló eriçó (melon) o ceba vermella (red onion). The insular director of Agriculture, Vicent Tur, stressed that the new labelling will serve to differentiate traditional vegetables in points of sale and to emphasise that it is a seasonal, local product, with less ecological footprint. To recover these indigenous varieties, the agricultural experimentation farm of Can Marines has carried out the first phase in creating a seed bank for these varieties, in order to preserve the genetic heritage. After consolidating the seed bank, the Consell now undertakes the campaign of remarketing the vegetables with specific labels, along with other promotional actions.

The result – just about as succulent and flavoursome beef, turkey and salmon as you will ever taste. Vegans are well cared for including the smoked organic Tofu, the tapas tasters offer a perfect lite bite, and a full night menu that is, well, smoking. Our recommendation has to be the Beef Brisket Merienda. A chunk of smoked beef brisket, horse reddish, pickles, mustard and bread.
Super Blood Moon is Longest Lunar Eclipse 27th July sees a lunar eclipse which will last
around 4 hours—the longest of the century The lunar eclipse that will take place on the 27th July will be the longest in 100 years—and you need no protection to see it. This lunar eclipse is known as the ‘Blood Moon’ or ‘Moon of Fire’ due to the red or reddish brown colour it takes on—this is because some of the sunlight going through Earths atmosphere is bent around the edge of Earth and falls onto the moons surface. The total eclipse will last from around 8.30pm to 10.13pm, although the whole event will last about 4 hours. It can be seen with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.

Bonifide werewolves are in for a double treat on the 27th, as not only do they get to howl at the very special moon, but local craft brewer Ibosim are also offering them a free beer. Of course you might expect Ibosim to celebrate the event given they brew a beer by that very name, and to celebrate they are kicking the evening off with a happy two hours from 6pm to 8pm during which time you don’t have to be a werewolf to get a pint for the price of a half, then come the witching hour werewolves get a pint for free. Apparently you only need be dressed as a werewolf, you don’t need any further proof you are one. Trusting souls these brewers obviously— pass me my false gnashers, I’m off down the brewhouse. a good smattering of my favourite spring onions. Best noodles I have ever eaten—period. Fat Billy’s have all sorts of exciting stuff going on too. Beach hamper delivery, some really cool sunbed and parasol combos for rent, and even boat hire. Mind you, all of those things required me to leave the restaurant, and I had absolutely no reason to do so. News Airport Strike Called Off at 11th Hour The indefinite strike of Ibiza airport security staff planned to start Friday 20th July, has been called off following an 11th hour agreement with employers. The strike was announced last Friday 13th when talks with the security staff concession holding company Trablisa broke down. The cancellation of the strike action came with less than a day to go, following an emergency meeting between the staff union and Trablisa. In that meeting Trablisa conceded the employee demands that they would respect the terms and conditions of the previous concession holder. Miguel Pardo, General Secretary of the Federation of Construction and Services Union, CCOO, of the Balearic Islands, said that the agreement is a victory for the workers. Pardo also thanked Isabel Castro, General Director of Labour of the Balearic Government, for their part in reaching the mediated agreement and thus resolving the conflict.
Ronda de Ses Paisses Traffic Change We reported in 878 edition back in April that the ‘semi roundabout’ intersections of the EL-30 by-pass, locally known as the Ronda de Ses Paisses will be developed into full roundabouts with a budget of 700,000€ and the works expected to last 3 months. Whether part of their budget or a temporary measure, the semi roundabouts are no more. Drivers are now able to turn right only, they cannot cross the bypass or turn left. Freshly painted road markings are in place and multiple road signs are being erected to inform drivers of the change. In the time it took to grab a couple of photos, one driver had already cut across the traffic despite the road signs and fresh gleaming white road markings. It’s a welcome change, but will drivers stick to it?
We Love Tourism; Balearic PP React to Growing Turismófobia We Love Tourism. The Balearic PP* have responded to the growing number of turismófobia** events and protests with their own ‘we love tourism’ campaign. The PP accuse the Balearic Government of “encouraging and promoting turismofóbic events”. *PP – The Partido Popular political party are Spain’s right of centre equivalent of the Conservative Party. The PSOE are the left of centre equivalent of the Labour Party. **Turismófobia – the term coined by the media to describe the anti-tourism sentiment and campaigns that have gained ground in Spain in recent years.
Pro-Tourism Manifesto Leaders and representatives of the Balearic Islands’ PP joined regional party president Biel Company at a public event to express their support for and promotion of tourism in the Balearic Islands. The event coincides with their introduction of a ‘Manifesto in favour of tourism’. Biel Company said that the PP wished to show its commitment “to the industry
Archaeological Excavation in Can Burgos Sant Josep Town Council are conducting archaeological digs and preparing a museum project for some of the findings made in the Can Burgos area. As reported by the Consistory, the nine cisterns, connected with each other, are still to be dated and were located by chance when municipal workers performed work for the creation of a new public green area. The Mayor, Josep Marí Ribas and the Councillor for Heritage, Francesc Ramon, have visited the excavations, accompanied by the archaeologists in charge, Glenda Graciani and Juanjo Marí Casanovas. During the visit, archaeologists explained
that two hydraulic assemblies have been discovered, one of them of an unusual type, which is pending a date. In addition, it has been ascertained that the deposits served as a temporary hiding place for a soldier during the Civil War, according to the testimonies that the investigators have been able to collect. The City Council has commissioned a museum project, which will allow some of the remains left in view of these lands, where a public park is being created. In addition, there will be a 3D image of the interior, that will be viewable on the Councils website.

The Cala llonga Hippy Market takes place every Thursday evening from 6pm with an array of locally hand crafted articles such as clothes, jewellery, trinkets, pottery and much more, produced by some of Ibiza's finest artisans all at reasonable prices. La Cantina Portmany La Cantina is a bar and restaurant right on San Antonio’s fountains square. A local legend, it has stood in the same spot and run by the same family since way back when it was by some way the biggest building on the waterfront in what was an unrecognisable San Antonio. With a pedigree of such distinction, you won’t find a better place for a traditional Paella or some fresh caught local fish. But it also offers far more. The La Cantina kitchen is also home to 3 specialist chefs each taking care over their respective Thai, Indian and TexMex division.
David’s Pizzeria David’s is renowned for its Italian-French cuisine and they have a vast menu, including 35 different pizzas to choose from, plus the option of turning any one into Calzone. Popular with locals and tourists alike, they are open for food to eat in and takeaway from morning through to late—usually very late, and at some point on your holiday, you’ll be glad of that. We locals can’t have their exceptional English breakfast (above) as often as we’d like, but you’re on holiday, so indulge yourself. Just 4,75€ gets you double British sausage and bacon, double egg, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, fried slice, toast and tea or coffee—plus a portion of jam for reasons we’ve never fully understood.

Shebizan Amanda O’Riordan Greetings and welcome to another sizzling instalment of Zips It Up, coming to you from poolside in Mallorca. Yes, I am spending my summer on the Love Island itself. In the spirit of things, I’m trying to keep up with this current series, but I’m struggling. It’s not as fun as last year, probably because we had personal connections to a contestant in last season’s villa – Tyla Carr. One year on, and Tyla has just announced that she is expecting her first child with her boyfriend of nine months, Ross. And Tyla Carr has also revealed she was so excited to take the pregnancy test, she did it in a Nando's toilet during a lunch date with her boyfriend, who wishes to remain out of the spotlight. Tyla, who also appeared on First Dates but shot to fame on last year's Love Island - embarked on a turbulent fling with the show’s bad boy Jonny, but is now loved-up with her camera-shy boyfriend. Tyla’s dad Johnny Carr is a very close friend of ours and I know he’ll hate me for this, but Jules and I would like to congratulate Tyla for having the first (ish) Love Island baby and to Johnny for becoming a Grandpa! Male Cleavage Male cleavage is not for everyone, but that slightly naked, sometimes hairy chest is an acquired taste and it’s back. The proof was on the streets of Men’s Fashion Week in Paris a few weeks ago. There, bare-chested swagger came in all shapes and sizes, clad in colourful can’t-miss-it printed shirts. Plus a splash of accessorising over a hairless chest with handfuls of silver “man jewellery”. The trend has been spotted on other menswear catwalks this season, too. Dior Homme showed men in blazers with nothing underneath. Also, I found pictures of one model striding down the runway in a completely unbuttoned floral blouse, whilst another model showed off his tattooed torso in a novelty Hawaiian-print shirt. Sure, this kind of ‘peacocking’ is all part of the fun in men’s fashion. But is it something that guys in the real world can pull off too? Is it a touch sleazy and a tad too “Peter Stringfellow” (god rest his soul)? Especially on a bloke with a super hairy chest. Like it or not, “manscaping” is now a fashion term and the Male Cleavage is definitely a thing in 2018. Whichever side of the chest hair debate you fall on, the key to getting it right often depends on the style and silhouette of shirt. Harry Styles has got it spot-on with this “Mick Jagger-in-the’70s” look. But if you’re a working professional, those around you probably don’t want to see your belly button. And when wearing those bright, printed button-up shirts, be sure to lose those under Tshirts, or “sweat buffers” as they are sometimes called. Just undo a couple of the top buttons for a breather. Aside from that, with a nod to a less-is-more mentality, styleconscious guys have every reason to bare their chests this summer.
Pallazo Pants Just about wherever you are in Europe right now, it’s hot. So no complaints, unless of course you’re stuck on the Central Line doing a sweltering hot commute. In these conditions, being able to wear something smart, cool and comfortable (and that works with sandals), is what we’re after. Let me introduce you to the palazzo pant. Or the Wide Leg Trouser. Wide legged and breezy, these are the perfect summer solution for days when you’re not ‘prepped’ (i.e. as tanned or as hair free as you’d like to be). Whilst trousers might not sound like the obvious summer style solution, the palazzo pant is “wide leg”, therefore

Lekha can mean either: for yourself, to yourself, by yourself, or with yourself. So, the two words together mean: “Go for yourself” or “Go to yourself” or “Go by yourself” or “Go with yourself”. When we obey the voice of God the journey will be something that is good “for yourself”. Paradoxically it will also be a journey that is true “to yourself”. The journey will be something that you must do “by yourself” even if you have others that are making the journey with you! They too will need to make the journey by themselves. Also “with yourself”!

24-7 Charity—‘Vomit Van’ Appeal 24-7 has recently launched a funding appeal to raise money for a new ‘Vomit Van’ (how they fondly refer to their main means of transport). Team member Jud Sweeney has provided details of their work in San Antonio and any donations however small, will help to support the fantastic work that they do on the island. Jud Sweeney 24-7 Ibiza is a Christian organisation that has been operating in San Antonio for more than 15 years. The volunteers aim to meet the emotional, spiritual and physical needs of holidaymakers and seasonal workers during the summer months.
24-7 Daytime During the day time we have a centre in Calle de General Prim which is open weekdays from 16:00- 20:00 (19:00 on Fridays) where workers can come and use the WIFI, play table tennis or Playstation, grab a free tea or coffee and have a chat. We can help connect people with the British Consulate, offer prison visits and assist people in specific areas of need. We also have a short Sunday evening service from 19:00- 19:30.
