Bring That Music Back  Sant Josep indicate a change in their controversial noise regulations in order to protect live music.  Live music would again be allowed, but must end at eleven o'clock at night, not midnight as has been the case historically.  The strict new regulations would remain in force for DJs.

The mayor of Sant Josep, Josep Marí Ribas, and the second deputy mayor, Ángel Luís Guerrero, have met with the president of the Association of Musicians d'Eivissa, Dani Martínez, to study a modification of the noise ordinance that would again facilitate live music performances in Ibiza’s Southern municipality. Marí Ribas has agreed to propose changes in the regulations, stating "because the problem of Sant Josep is not this type of music, but the excesses that have been committed in certain tourism businesses", a situation that

has led to the tightening of municipal ordinances. The mayor does not specifically state DJs playing electronic dance music, but we’ll stick our neck out and say we all know that is exactly what he is referring to when he refers to “certain tourism businesses”, and within that it is the so called beach-clubs that have caused considerable political upset in San José over the last few years. In the meeting, which was also attended by municipal technicians and the lawyer of the Associació de Músics, a revised wording was considered that would “facilitate the

No flight risk, Charlton player allowed home. Toni Escobar.

Charlton Footballer Accused of Rape in Ibiza Allowed to Return to UK  Judge lifts travel ban on Charlton Football Club

player and his friend after watching videos on the mobile phones of the accused men.

Charlton Football Club footballer Reeco Hackett-Fairchild, accused of raping a 19-year-old English tourist in Cala de Bou, has already recovered his passport, according to The Sun newspaper. The player returned to the United Kingdom yesterday after his travel ban was lifted. The Charlton player, Reeco Hackett-Fairchild, 20, was arrested on June 12 for alleged sexual assault, along with two friends. The striker was warned that he could be detained in Spain for several months. Reeco Hackett-Fairchild flew to London yesterday after his lawyer obtained an order lifting the travel ban. The investigating judge accepted a request to watch videos recorded on his cell phones and those of his Charlton colleague Karlan Ahearne-Grant. Hackett-Fairchild's lawyer, Jaime Campaner, told the judge he was confident the videos would undermine the alleged victim's claim that she had been raped and show that she had consensual sex with two of the three men under investigation. The investigating judge Carmen Martin Montero ruled that Hackett-Fairchild could leave Ibiza the same day she watched the videos alongside defence lawyers and state prosecutors, according to the British newspaper. The footballer, who has always insisted that he is innocent, received his passport yesterday at noon. The player is still under investigation and must report in person to the Spanish Embassy in London twice a month as part of his new bail conditions. The Court of Instruction No. 3 of Ibiza is still waiting for the forensic evidence to be presented, says The Sun, which publishes that "the forensic doctor who examined the alleged victim of rape has already made it clear that he did not find any signs of injury.", a statement that is at odds with the initial police reports issued at the time of the arrest. His friend Olusola Odejayi, a 26-year-old Briton who also had his passport taken away, has also had his travel ban lifted. The third man arrested, Ahearne-Grant, is being investigated on suspicion of a privacy offense for the recording of a mobile phone he made, but it does not constitute a sex crime in Spanish Law. According to The Sun, ‘judicial sources’ said that the two men who had the travel ban lifted were no longer considered a flight risk due to factors including the newly presented phone videos. organization of live concerts in small format, always respecting the rest of neighbours and coexistence”. Some of the points that have been discussed are the possibility of exempting the use of sound limiters to live music performances, limiting schedules - concerts should always end before 11 o'clock at night - and the obligation to communicate the concert calendar to the town hall in advance. The mayor said that whatever decisions may be taken locally, the Balearic law on decibel limits for outdoor performances would still be in force and observed. The meeting also clarified some aspects of the new ordinance of uses, which was approved by San José town council and has caused considerable unrest among musicians and performers in Ibiza. Municipal officials explained that the regulation "does not prohibit live music", but rather puts a stop to "the proliferation of outdoor entertainment activities such as beachclubs and nightclubs". Though the press report issued by San José town hall did not say so, we feel sure that the Musician’s representatives would respond that though the new regulations do not technically ban live music, the strict controls including stringent decibel limitations, make it in effect impossible to provide live music – at least that is what all the ones we have spoken to say.

Three Years Prison for Daniel Viñals’ Drunk Driver Killer  The victim’s family will appeal the sentence on the grounds of being insufficient in relation to the crime committed  The driver (MMB) who fatally ran over the cyclist has been sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison. The young man tested positive for alcohol, cocaine and amphetamines. The driver who ran-over and killed cyclist Daniel Viñals in Ibiza in April last year has been sentenced to three years in prison for a crime of reckless driving and serious negligence, and an additional 4 months and 14 days in prison for the crime of omission of duty to provide help (in that he fled the scene). The Viñals family plans to appeal the sentence on the grounds of being insufficient in relation to the crime committed. In addition, the sentence issued by the magistrate of the 2nd Criminal Court of Ibiza has banned MMB from driving for 4 years.

Financial ‘Mitigating Circumstance’ The judge took into account the “mitigating circumstance to repair the damage of the offense of reckless driving the fact that the accused paid, one week after the accident, the amount of 6,000 euros before the Court of Instruction to alleviate, as far as possible, the damage caused." It is also highlighted that the convicted person submitted to the consideration of the parties "the possibility of selling the high-end vehicle that he was driving" in order to increase this amount. Editorial Comment: Though this will seem odd to those used to the British and Irish justice system, it is quite normal in Spain for a financial penalty paid to the family of the victim to be considered as part of the sentence imposed. The driver, who was 23 years old when the events took place, has been incarcerated in the Ibiza Prison for the past 13 months.

Positive for alcohol, cocaine and amphetamines The fatal accident took place on April 29, 2017 on the

road between Sant Antoni and Sant Josep when MMB, who tested positive for alcohol, cocaine and amphetamines, ran over and killed Daniel Viñals and injured a second cyclist. The judge has refused to impose the legal minimum of two years in prison, despite the attenuating circumstance of reparation for the damage, because the convicted was already punished for driving under the influence of drugs in 2015.

Omission of Duty to Provide Help In the case of the crime of omission of the duty to provide help (fleeing the scene), the magistrate said that there is an "incomplete defence of transitory mental disorder due to alcohol intoxication and drugs". Editorial comment: Setting all the Spanish legalise to one side, in essence what happened was that the defence claimed the driver was too off-his-face to understand his legal responsibility to stop and help when he ran the cyclists over. The magistrate emphasised that criminal responsibility cannot be modified "by the simple habit of drug consumption, nor is it enough to be a drug addict at one or another scale to claim the application of mitigating circumstances". In responding to this aspect of the defence the judge acknowledged that the defendant had "depleted" his faculties but said (to the effect of) "it was not as if he was in an ethyl coma that leaves people immobilized." The criminal judge number 2 of Ibiza considered it "impossible" that the condemned "did not feel or hear the impacts" after running over the two cyclists, particularly in light of the evidence of damage suffered by the vehicle on its side. "Cyclists are located at the height of the window of the vehicle, so the vision exists," he said in his ruling. The sentencing determines that this is a case of reckless driving "by omission of the most elementary diligence required of every driver" so, that April 29, there was "an evident and concrete danger" for the life and integrity of the people "that ended unfortunately with the tragic result of a fatality and another serious injury".

News Ibiza Airport Security Staff Confirm Strike from July 20th The private security staff of Ibiza Airport has confirmed that it will start an indefinite strike on July 20th. The security staff have apologised to airport users for the affects of the strike action. After an arbitration meeting lasting four hours with officials of the current Ibiza airport security concession holder, Trablisa, workers emerged saying that the company "did not want to negotiate" and instead had attempted to have the strike declared illegal. The affected staff, represented by the CCOO Federation of Construction and Services union, said that Trablisa came to "scare and pressure". The strike follows eight days of action taken by the security staff in 2017.

Apologies to the Users Security personnel have apologized to users, stating that "the current unacceptable working conditions affects security," quoting by example occasions where staff are expected to work 16 hour shifts for 4 consecutive days. In addition to long working shifts, other claims include Trablisa not paying bonuses to casual staff, a lack of organisation staff, and constant changes to shift patterns. A spokesperson for the Federation of Construction and Services of the Balearic Islands, CCOO, said that Trablisa "has pushed the working conditions of the security and surveillance service of the airport of Ibiza to unacceptable limits". The Union also detailed practices of Trablisa that they say are discriminatory to female staff, including a lack of pay and bonus parity. “It is incomprehensible and shameful that a company like Aena, which generates multi-million-dollar benefits, allows the workers of their subcontractors to suffer these appalling conditions”, said the CCOO. There is no information yet made public from airport operators AENA as to expected consequences of the strike, or likely delays to passenger transit through the airport.

Cala Gracio Chiringuito Owner Sues Mayor The Mallorcan businessman who had his plans to open a new chiringuito beach bar in Cala Gració scuppered at the last moment, has lodged a complaint against several members of the City Council, starting with the mayor, Josep Tur. The lawyer representing the developer is the ex-anticorruption Pedro Horrach, who has already defended the German businessman Matthias Kühn in the case of the illegal works of Tagomago. Together with the mayor, the lawsuit also holds responsible the councillor of Urbanism, Cristina Ribas, and two municipal technicians. According to sources familiar with the case the developer is basing his criminal action on the conviction that he has obtained the necessary authorisations and that there are no rules preventing him from opening the chiringuito, which is already installed on the sea shore, just in front of the desalination plant of San Antonio. In the face of considerable public opposition on Social media, the government team initiated a review of the planning file, effectively preventing his opening. They say their review had nothing to do with their decision, but the developer says it was an arbitrary act and contrary to law. For the moment, the judge has rejected the request presented by the businessman to provisionally suspend the stop order issued by the City Council, so it remains in force. Meanwhile, the City Council of Sant Antoni has commissioned an external legal opinion aimed at clarifying the procedure that must be followed from now on. Though the permit for this kiosk was granted directly by Costas, the Balearic Coastline Demarcation, it was issued following a favourable report from San Antonio town hall. The Town Hall are now using technicalities of other regulations to prevent the chiringuito opening.

1st Illegal Rentals Joint Action Finds Tourists in 22 out of 32 Apartments; But is the 40k€ Fine a Sufficient Deterrent? Armed with new powers of inspection, the first joint operation of Ibiza Consell’s Property Inspectors and Ibiza Local Police, found illegal tourist rentals in 22 apartments of a 32-apartment building in Playa d’en Bossa. The building owner was found to be living in 7 of the remaining apartments, whilst 3 tenants were able to produce legal long-term tenancy agreements. The operations are set to continue in July and August, focusing on those buildings that have been subject to the greatest number of denuncias from neighbours. Each inspection is undertaken simultaneously by two teams, each comprising two inspectors and a police officer. The insular director of Tourism, Vicent Torres, said that the joint actions are the result of decisions taken last February in finding a way to effectively fight the problem of illegal rentals. "One problem we had was that the inspectors were going to a property, but most of the time the occupants did not open the door. Now, when going with the Police, they have no choice but to answer" explained Torres, who said that they did not have the power to adopt this approach until new regulations came into force recently. Joint teams have been set up for the raids in three municipalities: Ibiza Town, Sant Josep and Sant Antoni. Santa Eulària and Sant Joan will be formed shortly.

40,000€ Fine In the case of the Playa d’en Bossa property, 5 of the 22 cases of illegal renting have already been commenced, and 80% may be processed by the end of the year, which would result in a fine of 40,000€. The new regulations come under the Law 6/2017 that amended the Law 8/2012 of Tourism of the Balearic Islands, which "establishes that the owners are responsible together with the marketing entities." According to a statement issued by the Consell, it has already been noted

that the 22 properties detected in the Playa d'en Bossa building "were advertised on various platforms that already have open proceedings", they said, "These facts will now be incorporated into these files, which will aggravate the penalty to the platforms." Torres said that it will be much easier for the Consell to take these mass actions in future. He said that in the past “owners could make 50,000 excuses, but not now. Tourist rent is forbidden, the inspectors have gone to the flats, it has been proven that there were tourists there and they have been identified. It is not something based only on ads and offers. It has been proven that at that time they were rented to tourists. Now everything will be easier and faster.” The tourism chief said that in addition to the 40,000 euros fine, the owner must immediately cease illegal activity or face further fines. “All those identified in the operations can expect repeated visits throughout the summer to make sure that the owners have desisted of this activity”.

Editorial Comment: Just a little perspective on the 40,000€ fine. Some guesstimate – and we think conservative - sums;

 22 flats x 1,500€ per week rental in July and August x 80% Occupancy = 237,000€

 22 flats x 1,000€ per week June and September x 70% Occupancy = 138,000€

 22 flats x 700€ per week Part April, May and Part October x 60% Occupancy = 83,000€

 Total projected season income = 458,000€ = ten times

potential fine if caught. Or to put it another way, total projected season income to point of raid = 132,000€, leaving 92,000€ profit after fine. Or to put it another way, using our figures and 60% occupancy, if the owner is not caught by the 2nd week of May, he has already earned greater than the fine. Ibiza Consell has held new powers since May. Number of raids conducted up to 10th July = 1. Is the penalty combined with the likelihood of being caught sufficient as a deterrent?

Pool Dining Aperture have live DJs and music—a good choice is the Wednesday night sunset pool party. http://www.apertureibiza.com/en/

Relish Restaurant

What better way to spend a July Day than combining fine food with an afternoon siesta, taking an occasional cooling dip? This week we round up some of the increasing number of restaurant pool lounges, just made for living the life. spend day bed and nibble on our favourites from the Aperture finger food selection. The selection of four mini burgers—egg, bacon, gouda and gorgonzola, are served with fries for just 7€. For a bigger appetite we love the Tataki Tuna marinated tuna fillets, accompanied by green salad.

Aperture Though positioned on the busy through route from San Antonio to the Bay, Aperture’s elevated first floor terrace gives the feeling of being in a secluded coastal retreat. With sunset views to die for, Aperture offers bohemian chic without pretention. Take a (very modest) minimum

Just footsteps from the beach of Cala De Bou, the restaurant and bar extend into a large covered terrace with views across San Antonio Bay and the lights of the Sunset Strip and Marina beyond. But today we are concerned with outside—the gardens and a private pool with sunbed service are available for the exclusive use of relish patrons, and we particularly recommend you to an afternoon eating from the brunch menu and sipping on their cocktails. Pancakes shouldn’t be this good, and they come in both fruit compote and bacon and honey variations. Pair the pancakes with a bloody Mary, but if it is the full afternoon snooze you are after, it has to be an indulgent massaman curry, a misleadingly reasonable 13,95€ for a traditional thai curry with a subtle blend of hot, sweet & sour flavours served with spiced rice & a coriander flat bread, and the perfect accompaniment of a Relish Mule cocktail—aperol, gin, licor 43, fresh ginger, lemon, chilli & sugar syrup. https://www.relishrestaurantibiza.com/

Food & Drink do it in style with one of the Royal Plaza’s special overnight packages, or add on some pampering in the Spa that sits adjacent to the rooftop pool. Expect traditional 4-star quality of service, and one of the best days, nights or both, you’ll spend this year. See main photo opposite. http://www.royalplaza.es/en

Rooftop Nine @ Sol House Rooftop nine is a venue special enough to be in my top five places to take Ibiza visitors.

Mariposa We have said it before and make no apology for saying it again, the Mariposa will guarantee you one of the warmest welcomes you can ever expect to get. Nestled up in the Pueblo Esparagos hills behind Cala Llonga, Joe, Di, Molly and the rest of the Mariposa family pride themselves of good home cooking. I know I should select one of their very popular salads, or mountainous burgers, but every time I go I can’t resist their brie and bacon toasted sandwich, so tasty it usually turns into two. I can’t just recommend a sandwich in a review can I? OK back to the burgers, homemade, juicy, full of flavour, and very, very, big. You want proof? My wife will kill me for using this photo—I hope you appreciate the sacrifice I am making here.

The Mariposa pool is perfect for families with a paddling pool for tots at one end, and surrounded by sunbeds.

Hotel Royal Plaza Food with a pool and a view. The Royal Plaza is another hidden secret. Their rooftop pool and dining area has one of the finest outlooks in Ibiza, and a menu to match. The perfect setting for a romantic get-away, and why not

Las Mimosas & Mimo’s Las Mimosas is the new boutique hotel by Mambo in the bay. Mimo’s is its attached Italian, with a good deal of Ibicenco influence, restaurant. The word that springs to mind when I think of Las Mimosas and Mimo’s is innovative. Every plate that leaves the kitchen is a work of art, and turning every corner in the hotel reveals some gorgeous design touch. It has all the chic of Milan, but tempered by Ibicenco understatement. We love it, and raved about it in our review a few weeks ago here https://theibizan.com/las-mimosas-review/ Pictured below is their Taglioloni de tinta de sepia con salteado de calamar ibicenco. Sublime. Our tip is to take advantage while you can. At present, the pool is open for the use of diners, though as the hotel gets busier it may become the reserve of hotel guests only. We’ll worry about that when we get to it, for the time being, just enjoy. http://www.lasmimosasibiza.com/

OK the service can be a little iffy, staff are probably too busy admiring the view, but even that one small negative seems to be improving recently. We were last there on Wednesday hosting a whistle-stop tour of friends from home, and it gained the usual wow response as they walked out onto the terrace. Then an added bit more wow when they found themselves chatting to So Solid Crew—and it isn’t at all unusual to find DJs and artists chilling out on the deck. The pool might not be for everyone—the infinity nature of it that is, but most people seems happy on the waters edge chatting over cocktails. Rooftop nine is not as expensive as its situation and clientele may suggest. We had a few very decent bottles of our highly regarded local Ibizan vineyard Can Rich white at 26€ per bottle, and the chaps said the beers were cheaper than any old pub in the U.K. Rooftop nine’s menu is limited but very good. Think hummus, burgers, finger food—basically exactly what you are likely to want poolside on a scorching Ibiza July afternoon. Keep an eye on their schedule for some very decent line ups at the decks—below José padilla

News House Sales Slump, But Prices Soar

Ibiza House Sales Slump by 46% in May Data published by the Balearic Institute of Statistics (Ibestat) this week has revealed a sharp downturn in house sales for the month of May, a decrease of 46% compared to May 2017. A total of 121 properties were sold in May, almost half that of the previous year, despite the fact that house sales for Spain nationally increased by 4.7% overall. The malaise follows a bright start to the year January to April, however all gains made have been wiped out by the May slump. The drop is also evident in the transfer of commercial property with May proving the second worst month in the last decade.

Ibiza Housing Prices Sour by 17% in One Year

Meanwhile property specialists Tinsa have released figures showing Ibiza to have the most expensive coastal property in Spain, along with a big increase in values over the last year. Reflecting a steady national recovery in property prices, the average price of homes increased in 71% of the municipalities of the Spanish coast in the last year. Ibiza now tops the list at (3,527 euros / m2), then followed by Sitges (3,252 euros / m2) and Calvià (2,888 euros / m2). The areas with the most intense growth in the last year are Sanxenxo (Pontevedra), where the average price has experienced an interannual increase of 24.6%, Sóller (Mallorca), with increases of 21%, and Arrecife (Lanzarote), with 17.8%, then followed by Ibiza with the fourth highest level of growth at 17%. The picture is not universally upward however, with some areas still in decline. Leading the downward list are Calonge (Girona), with a decrease of 11.2%, Mojácar (Almería), down 8.3%, and Sada (A Coruña), down 7.2%.

San Antonio is “Independent Republic of Laughing Gas” Claims Diario Journalist  The Diario de Ibiza has published a report stating that they have observed Nitrous Oxide, N2O, laughing gas being openly sold by illegal street vendors on the s’Arenal beach promenade in San Antonio.  Report 10th July 2018

Also noteworthy is the reduction in price from 1 balloon for 5€ to now being 2 balloons for 5€. As is the way in such things, this would indicate a significant increase in volume of sales. Drug dealers do not tend to reduce prices unless competition and volume demand it.

Diario reporter José Miguel L. Romero went to the s’Arenal promenade on Saturday from 7.50p.m. to 8.50p.m. In what he refers to as “the independent republic of laughing gas” he bears witness to “a score of traffickers, all African” openly selling laughing gas as “highly profitable business of that low-cost drug”. The capsules, actually sold as gas for creaming devices used in catering, cost a few cents each. Dispensed in a balloon which is then inhaled by the user, they have historically been sold for 5€ each, though Romero says the price has now been reduced to 2 for 5€. He says that in the hour he was there, not one police officer was seen, and that the floor was littered with discarded balloons and empty gas canisters. Romero goes on to explain that the street sellers were engaging people in giving explanations on how to use the gas, and that he counted 20 sellers on the promenade and on the beach, some of whom were openly advertising their availability by holding ready inflated balloons.

Laughing Gas Sellers Arrested in San Antonio

Editorial Comment: Residents and Workers of San Antonio will not find anything remarkable in this report. The sale of laughing gas on the s’Arenal promenade, along with the offer of other substances and allegations of associated crime perpetrated by those selling the drugs, are a well known problem to all those of us who live here. What makes it news is not so much the subject itself, but that the Spanish press are taking notice. That is no guarantee of gaining police action, but it certainly has greater prospect of achieving it than us locals moaning on facebook (see additional report ‘Laughing Gas Sellers Arrested’)

 Report 13th July 2018 Lo and behold, 3 days after our report highlighting the Spanish press interest factor, San Antonio police moved in to make arrests on the s’Arenal beach promenade. The joint operation between The Local Police and Civil Guard commenced at around 11.30pm in the area of Punta des Moli, where the sellers are known to congregate. Alerted to the Police presence, the gas sellers bolted and were pursued by the Police, who said they had identified 14 individuals. Three had been observed selling nitrous oxide and were subsequently arrested for public health crimes. Two were arrested for resisting the agents, and one for peddling other articles. At 3a.m. a second control was undertaken next to the Camí d'es Regueró where eight people were identified and one of them arrested for a crime against public health due to the sale of nitrous oxide. In addition to the capsules found in the possession of the detainees, the agents recovered 78 capsules that the sellers had thrown to the ground during their attempts to escape.

See the agenda for special events, but every night you are guaranteed a warm welcome from Chaz and the team. Take a cocktail or two on the terrace, then head inside to show us your moves.

metres. Cast all thoughts of a British barbeque aside– Ibiza’s best grill restaurants, of which Sa Brasa is undoubtedly one, take the concept of charcoal grilling to another level. The emphasis is all about providing the very best quality cuts of meat, and fresh fish that may well have been swimming within sight of the restaurant earlier the same day. You need to have a grill meal at least once while you are here, but if you do it early in your holiday our bet is you’ll be back for more.

Fancy some good old family cabaret? The Playa Bella apartments kick off with nightly cash Bingo hosted by our own mister thriller from Aston Villa, Chip, and once your eyes are restored to their regular horizontal position, the night continues with a roster of live cabaret featuring everything from tribute acts to comedy to drag and some very talented musical acts. All this takes place on their beachfront terrace which also has a great range of food available day and night.

 Mariposa Pool Bar & Restaurant, Cala Llonga

 Ibosim Brewhouse

Entertainment

Tough to know whether to list Ibosim brewhouse in ‘food & drink’ or ‘things to do’. As bars are hardly in short supply in Ibiza, and Ibosim offers so much more, we decided on the latter. Ibosim is the first and only beer produced in Ibiza. Visit the brewery and enjoy a worthy range of craft beers on the taproom terrace, or take it a step further and ask about their brewery tours. Ibosim are 50m from Port des Torrent beach.

Only In Ibiza  Grow Submarine, Head Shop

The idea of ‘living the dream’ under the Mediterranean sun becomes reality at the Mariposa. Start your day with a bacon and brie toasted sandwich and café con leche, followed by a dip in the pool, and sip on some cocktails from your poolside lounger. Heaven.

Santa Eulalia

San Antonio

There can be little doubting the vegan credentials of Los Otros, as not only do they offer a fine range of Italian food, the owner is an authoritative author of vegan cookbooks too. The setting is magical. Just meters from the water on the marina front of Santa Eulalia, your visit will have the reassuringly relaxing soundtrack of the clinking masts of moored yachts.

 Sa Brasa, Grill Restaurant, Santa Eulalia Though you can see Sa Brasa’s exact location on our map below, as long as you are in the right general area the incredible aroma of the grills will guide you the last few

The days of the straw donkey are as dead as a dropped donkey. What Grandma really wants as a gift from your Ibiza adventure is the latest in acrylic bong technology. Don’t know what to get your mates at work—how about some matching grinders? Of course it doesn’t have to be a gift, what better way to fill that last space in the suitcase than with some stock from Grow Submarine’s extensive range of cannabis culture stock? From Rizla’s up, though we warn you that attempting to board a Ryanair flight with a full hydrophonic growing system may incur excess baggage fees.

Food & Drink

La Cantina is a bar and restaurant right on San Antonio’s fountains square. A local legend, it has stood in the same spot and run by the same family since way back when it was by some way the biggest building on the waterfront in what was an unrecognisable San Antonio. With a pedigree of such distinction, you won’t find a better place for a traditional Paella or some fresh caught local fish. But it also offers far more. The La Cantina kitchen is also home to 3 specialist chefs each taking care over their respective Thai, Indian and TexMex division.

At last the summer season is here again and so is the Thursday evening Hippie Market in Cala Llonga. The market takes place every Thursday evening from 6pm with an array of locally hand crafted articles such as clothes, jewellery, trinkets, pottery and much more, produced by some of Ibiza's finest artisans all at reasonable prices. Located on the promenade it's a perfect place to wander along under the evening stars while listening to live music, looking for a perfect gift, souvenir or personal treat. In addition to this there's a wide variety of international bars and restaurants for you to enjoy and a safe playground for the little ones. There's ample free parking just a few metres away.

Food & Drink See adverts on facing page, front page & food and drink page for contacts, hours, and location.

 Tapas Restaurant and Lounge Bar One top tip to start with—it is best to book. Tapas is one of the most popular places to eat in San An, and in the height of summer you may have quite a wait to get seated if you haven't booked in advance. Tapas is all about global flavours, but served in a traditional Spanish Tapas style of small plates perfect for sharing. They have a fantastic range of vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free options on the menu too.

Putting the VIP experience within reach of non-VIP pockets, it is the perfect place to experience some style for a night out, or as a party starter for later clubbing. Plastik’s masterful resident DJs are joined most nights of the week by headliners from some of Ibiza’s biggest club nights.

 Viva Tennis With 5 top quality courts (2 clay, 3 artificial grass), a bar, pool, sun-terrace and beautiful garden Viva Tennis is the essential destination on Ibiza to play tennis and relax with friends. Shebizan  Amanda O’Riordan Dear Zipsters. I feel like I’m in a surreal parallel universe right now. Where the sun shines every day, people wear next to nothing and are genuinely happy. We don’t have any Government in power and a hot-air balloon featuring a huge image of Donald Trump in a nappy, glides peacefully across the warm blue skies of London. But mostly because everyone, man or woman, aged 5 – 95 is loving football and the World Cup (and waistcoats) again. Baddiel & Skinner are number 1 in the charts with ‘Three Lions’ after George Ezra stepped aside and asked the public to make them number one. Congratulations Boys! Where am I? Onto fashion, and congratulations, to my good friends at new boho label Angel Warrior. Jenny Lily and Kerry Moon launched their label just three months ago, and have been celebrating their meteoric rise since working with glamorous 90s fashion giant Sub Couture, which has sold out of all Angel Warrior pieces. They even have an ultra-gorgeous kids’ range, which I’m desperate to diet and get into myself! www.angelwarrior.com Congrats girls – 2018 is your year. Long may you continue to shine. Onto this week and I HAD to feature the Waistcoat, as well as celebrate the Bikini’s 72nd birthday. Plus, a helpful 9 day cleanse to help you get into your bikini or speedos this summer. Happy Summer 2018 all round!

Arrival of the Waistcoat I only have to say “The Waistcoat” and you know exactly what I’m going to say next. Gareth Southgate. Fashion and football haven’t always worked well together. Think Hoddle and Waddle. With the exception of David Beckham and Hector Bellerin, we don’t usually refer to footballers as style icons, but enter a new football fashion idol. England manager Gareth Southgate is shaping up to be the most stylish gaffer at the World Cup 2018, and it’s all thanks to THAT £65 Marks & Spencer waistcoat, which has totally sold out by the way. Gareth hasn’t always been applauded for his style (don’t mention the penalty), but he’s had a major make-over. The mundane shirts of old have been replaced with smart suits, expensive shoes and a fashionable, neatly trimmed hipster beard. He rocks his sharp tailored three-piece suit. So far, he’s showcased a blue version with a red, white and blue tie for England's matches against Tunisia, Panama and their crucial win against Colombia. Signs that Gareth was sharpening up his act were obvious back in November 2017, when he wore a waistcoat at England's international friendly against Germany. Then in April, he was spotted looking rather dapper in the stands at the Everton and Liverpool premier league match, in a flat cap. Very Beckham-esque. But the England manager is not alone when it comes to his love of the waistcoat. Other celeb fans include David Beckham himself, David Gandy and Jamie Redknapp, To get Gareth’s exact look you can snap up his three piece suit from Marks & Spencer, the official suit supplier to the England team, for £264. The suit comes in tailored, regular or slim fit. You can also buy the same striped tie for £25. Be cautious though Lads. Not everyone looks good in a waistcoat, or the middle-aged man's corset, as it’s often called. Avoid patterns at all costs, unless you want to look like a 80s snooker player. As a boho girl and Kate Moss fan, I’m wearing one of Gareth’s waistcoats over my bikini this summer teamed with a fedora and ankle boots at all Balearic hot spots this summer.

Happy 72nd Birthday To The Bikini The bikini is celebrating its birthday this summer, and the two-piece has come a long way since its creation in 1946. History was made 72 years ago this week, when an outfit ‘smaller than the world’s smallest swimsuit’ made an appearance at a poolside fashion show in Paris. The brainchild of a French engineer called Louis Réard, the risqué two-piece quite literally exploded onto the fashion scene. Réard realised that fabric rationing by the US government during the war presented him with a moneymaking opportunity. Fashion houses had begun to use rationing as an excuse to redesign the swimsuit, using less fabric and revealing more flesh. On July 5 1946, Ré-

ard took things one stage further by designing what we all know and love. The teeny weeny bikini - small enough to fit in a matchbox. The only problem that Réard faced was finding a model brave enough to wear his invention. On July 11 1946, Micheline became the first woman to wear a bikini, during a press show in Paris. Then followed pictures of a gorgeous Brigitte Bardot on the beach at the Cannes film festival in 1953, and boom! The world never looked back – they were everywhere. There are hundreds of styles to choose from now, from classic halter-necks, tiny Brazilian to this season's super on-trend Bardot look – (yes, she’s back) - so find the one that suits your body shape best. Whether you're packing for a beach break or sunning it up during this heat wave, I've found the prettiest and most practical bikinis from the high street. (see Amanda’s Web Blog for details)

Rudimental interview with Leon ‘DJ Locksmith’ Rolle Claire B

I had a quick chat with Leon, aka DJ Locksmith from Rudimental when they appeared at the opening weekend of Ibiza Rocks a few weeks ago, to find out what they are up to at the moment and what we can expect from their Major Toms presents Rudimental and Friends pool party residency that begins on July 5th. CB: I was at both of your live shows here. L: Oh wow. CB: The first one, they were both good, but the first one was really off the scale. L: Yeah, crazy. CB: And a lot of my friends actually say that that was their best gig here, it was their favourite, and there have been some really good ones, so what's your memory of that? L: There's been some serious historical moments here. First of all let me start off with, the first time that I came to Ibiza Rocks was to actually watch a show and be a punter. CB: Who was it? L: It was Dizzy Rascal. And I came to watch Dizzy Rascal, it was a boys holiday and I was just in awe of the energy that he had on stage and I kept saying to my boys, what are we doing, we were working in schools at the time, we've got to be up on that stage, we are producing good music. Lo and behold two years later we were onstage and we did a DJ set but then to come back and do it live was a whole different world for us. Because that's where you understand what Rudimental is really about, you know. You’ve got so many sort of categories to Rudimental. You've got the commercial side, you've got the underground music side and lucky enough we've been able to fuse the two. But sometimes it's hard for the listener to actually understand, what is actually going on here, because people like boxes, but when you come see the live show and when you see it all put together with live instrumentation and electronic sounds, and brass, real drummers, it just brings it to a whole different light and it's electric. And you kind of lose yourself, it's almost like an out of body experience. That's what it was like on stage. And more importantly it was like that for the crowd because we felt it off the crowd, the energy from the crowd. CB: It was amazing, I mean you used the word electric. I would use that word as well. I was there, I was in the audience and as you say, everyone was feeding off each other, the band were feeding off the audience, the audience were feeding off the stage and everyone on the stage was just having an absolute ball, you could tell. L: Yeah, totally, totally. Well that's what it's all about. Interaction with the fans is what people want to see. I've been to live shows and I've seen the sort of segregation between, you are the fans and you are the performers on stage. When we go on stage we like to bring them together

so you feel like you're a part of our world, and we are a part of your world. CB: Well it works. [Leon laughs] So what can we expect from your pool parties here then? L: Our pool parties are going to have a lot of different artists on, artists that we're big fans of and artists that we've signed as well to our label, Major Toms. Like AnneMarie, who has been absolutely killing it. Our DJ set is going to consist of myself and a brass player, two Rudimental members, so the energy and the vibe will be electric, but more importantly it's all about showing people who we're fans of and who we're interested in outside of our circle, and people we might be investing in in the future via our label, Major Toms, hence why we're calling it Major Toms presents Rudimental. CB: It sounds great, it sounds like an interesting project. L: Yeah, definitely, it is definitely an interesting project because it's a new chapter in the Rudimental story and we kind of just want to give the exposure that Major Toms deserves. We've always wanted to lay a platform out for new artists. We've worked with the likes of John Newman and Ella Eyre when they were practically unknown and then

they have to fly off and pursue their own careers, which is amazing, we love that, but we wanted to provide a platform where we can develop them further and make sure they reach the heights that they deserve. So hopefully we can do that and Ibiza Rocks is going to be the platform for that.

Page 12

CB: Are there going to be some live performances as well? L: There will be no live performances but there will be DJ/ PA sets kind of things. So, for example if Anne-Marie is playing, she'll be singing to a backing track. But yeah, we've trialled and tested it and she'll give a brilliant performance, she's such a good performer and so are the others. You've got the likes of Octavian who's an up and coming rapper who's going to come, you've got J Hus, you've got David Rodigan. When I just mention those names, I kind of think wow that's an eclectic set there, and that sums up what Rudimental is about, it's not one box of music, it's an eclectic sound. CB: Great! So what else is lined up for you this summer? L: Oh, this summer's a busy one. Obviously we've got the residency here and we've got the album, which will be released real soon, on September 7th. We'll be doing some touring, mostly DJ sets, a few live shows because we want to save it for our headline show in October. For us the main focus is the album, although albums are really underestimated these days I feel, I feel it's very important for us to have an album because that's what people want, they want to go and listen to a body of work. It's all well and good giving them singles but they want the story behind them and they want to come see a show. I feel like having an album helps people invest in your show and that's what we're about. CB: I was going to ask you about the album. So what you can tell me about it? L: The album's going to have that Rudimental spine in there, you know, you're going to have unknown artists that you don't know about and they're going to blow you away vocally. I feel like it's probably the best music that we've created to date. I've grown up with the Rudimental boys since I was 5 years old and every stage in our career we've pushed each other further, we've pushed and broken down boundaries. We've done it again with this album, it's going to have an eclectic sound. It's got reggae, drum and bass, house influences in there as per usual, but I feel like the quality of music has stepped up to another level and I'm really excited for people to hear it and just to feel what we feel while we were making it. CB: I can't wait to hear it. So are you hoping that you'll have a bit of time off whilst you're in Ibiza and get to explore the island a bit? L: Oh, I wish. In the five, six years that I've been coming here as a performer, as an artist, it's usually in and out jobs, you know. I haven't had a holiday here, It's either be here for a day and a half and then off somewhere else and then come back the next day. I may have to pick a couple of days out of the schedule to just actually relax and chill here because it is my favourite island in the world. CB: You should try. L: Oh definitely. CB: I was going to say what do you like most about Ibiza but you probably haven't seen enough of it to have an opinion.

L:You know what I love most about Ibiza are the hidden gems that you have. When I first came here, it was on a boy's holiday, we spent most of our time on the strip as you do when you're on a boy's holiday, but as we came here as artists and performers, you kind of start noticing other stuff, like, what's the castle called?

EDEN JULY Highlights Les Femmes: Fantasy Jazz

Time for a little injection of culture to the At Night pages, taking the form of a new female jazz quartet, who are to premiere in Ibiza with a concert at the Cultural Center Can Jerome, San José Les Femmes comprise Anna Moreno, Joan Sales, Angela Pozuelo and Elvira Ramón, three Valencian and one Ibiza. The show, ‘More than Jazz’ provides as repertoire Suite No. 1 for flute and jazz piano trio by French composer Claude Bolling. Ibizan pianist Elvira Ramón is a graduate of the Conservatory del Liceu in Barcelona with a long history of performance in chamber groups. Joan Sales, the bassist, is soloist in the Municipal Band of Valencia and professor of bass. Anna Moreno, flautist, has studied in Paris, worked as a teacher in Valencia and has a great international reputation. Finally, on percussion, Angela Pozuelo, the least experienced of the group but making up any deficit in time with pure, natural, talent. The producer of the show, Juan Ballester explained that the concert program is especially interesting because it "opens with an original style of classical music, moves into jazz, and ends in a fantasy. It is a powerful starting point for the group, because our aim is to prepare different repertoires and emerging composers have at their disposal a quartet which created new scores."

CB: Dalt Vila. L: Yeah, Dalt Vila. CB: You did a gig there - I was at that one too and that was good. L: Yeah, we did a gig there and there were lots of technical issues but we managed to get through. And then the beaches - there's something here for everyone, you know. You can come here on that first boy or girl's holiday or whatever and you can also have that relaxing time, you can bring your family out here and still get that quality time or you can just have a straight up rave, which I'm guessing a lot of people come to the island for. So that's what I love it for, it's hidden gems and the fact that it's built for everyone. CB: Well try and make sure you get a couple of days while you're here. L: Ah, I hope so. CB: Well that's it, have a great party, enjoy it, it sounds really good, I can't wait to see what you're doing. L: Ah, cheers. Thank you.

Community Weather 13th July—19th July 2018 ARIES – The Fool Trust becomes a key issue for you this week. The Fool card doesn’t mean you are one; quite the opposite in fact. It only matters if follow your heart and believe in your intuition. Let go of the need to be right because it’s your reaction to unfolding drama’s that will make all the difference. Take risks and have self-belief. TAURUS - The Sun This card promises happy times as well as new opportunities which, if you’re sharp enough, should be grasped by both hands. You'll be inventive in increasing your personal wealth so embrace the idea of success. Team efforts work best. If your health has given you cause for concern, this healing card brings vitality and a sense of wellbeing at last. GEMINI – Five of Cups Happiness is indicated by this card; but only if you are prepared to cross an emotional bridge and heal the hurts from the past that still has power to wound and break you. Remember that it's through our disappointments that we're able to grow and work towards personal transformation. So, release, let go and move forward to a brighter life. CANCER - Nine of Swords This week start the process of conquering your fears by not letting them get the better of you. Swords represent our thoughts; so much of what you fear is created in your mind and may NEVER happen. Don’t allow negative thought patterns to dominate your life, as there is nothing to fear, but fear itself. Keep your thoughts positive. LEO - Justice Get to grips with health matters and decide on a diet that suits you. You’ll feel more balanced about situations that have left you feeling sensitive and out of kilter recently; a sense of harmony is restored. Leo’s who write for a living; it’s time to use your mind and imagination and begin a project which improves your bank balance. VIRGO - Strength You’re able to show others just how strong and resilient you are, especially if the going gets tough this week. Whatever presents you with a challenge is easily dealt with and you are an inspiration to friends, family or colleagues when it comes to dealing with obstacles. Stand your ground, but do so with dignity. Resist the urge for revenge. LIBRA – Ace of Swords Again, but with more emphasis on personal triumph. You're able to outfox a fox; win applause; seal the deal; get the girl/guy, etc. You get the picture? You’re original and inventive this week. Those of you involved in the arts or media relations are inspired and ultra-creative. This of course brings recognition of your talents and the appropriate financial reward. SCORPIO - Two of Wands Problems can be sorted out amicably, so long as you don’t take the moral high ground. Acting in a superior way won’t make you popular. If you don’t care about that, then you’ll be putting yourself in a vulnerable position. Who knows when you might need support from allies? Don’t act aloof; friendliness and a positive outlook win new friends. SAGITTARIUS - Temperance Finally you’ll be given recognition and praise for what you have been diligently working on recently. Introduce a more harmonious and balanced routine into your day to day life; as it’s true that what you project on to others is a reflection of your own inner world. If any discordant situations arise, handle them right and you will be alright! CAPRICORN – Ace of Cups Good news is on the way and with it a reason to celebrate. It’s a time of new beginnings and for some a birth that brings friends and family together. If you're awaiting an outcome to long running saga the indications are that you get the result you want. Emotional balance comes easy after a period of stress and vulnerability. AQUARIUS - Ten of Disks Adding to your material security is easy this week as others like what you do and are willing to dig deep for your services. This card also indicates an unexpected windfall, so you might want to speculate to accumulate. Life is offering you opportunities that a year ago would have been hard to imagine. How wonderful, so be thankful! PISCES – The Star (reversed) Pondering on what's the life plan? The plan is not external, you are the plan. Don’t bury your head in the sand; head up and get things done. Any loss of clarity is temporary; giving you opportunity to reconnect at the deepest level of who you are; remember you are spirit in a body, not a body with a spirit.

and the dunamis is able to flow through Jesus from heaven to earth. The Greek word used translated above as “power” is dunamis from which we get “dynamite”! In the language of Jesus, the Hebrew behind dunamis is ha-gevurah. At first glance, the power seems to be some sort of mystical or spiritual energy that flows out from Jesus. It seems to be a kind of energy that is detachable from Jesus. What is this power? To answer this question, we do need a little 1st Century Jewish background. After all, Jesus was a 1st Century Israeli rabbi. In the time of Jesus, it was

Rev. Dr Peter Pimentel The Holy Gospel of Luke (a 1st Century biography of Jesus) reports: “…a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people … had come to hear Jesus and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. (The Gospel of Luke 6:17-19). “Power came out from him and healed all of them.” Where there is faith in Jesus amongst the people then a connection is made

forbidden to use the holy name of God, YHWH (pronounced, Yahweh. There are no vowels in ancient Hebrew!). Whenever YHWH occurs in the Hebrew Bible (The Old Testament) the reader would use a substitute such as Adonai (the Lord), Ha-Shem (The Name) or Ha -Gevurah (The Power). In conversation one of these substitute names was always used. To utter the divine name YHWH was blasphemy and liable of the death sentence. A frequently used substitute for the divine name was The Power. So it seems likely that the power that came out of Jesus was not

some mystical or spiritual energy but that it was nothing less than The Power! YHWH! The manifestation of God himself in healing. Using a substitute for the divine name occurs in the trial of Jesus when Jesus refers to YHWH as The Power: “You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of The Power”. (14:62). When the disciples had mystical encounters with the ascended Jesus, he tells them to stay in Jerusalem until they are clothed with The Power from on High! The Holy Spirit! (Luke 24:49 & Acts 1:4-5).

Fiesta del Carmen July 16 is one of the most important fiestas on the island, the annual fiesta in honour of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of seamen. It’s a fiesta that’s widely celebrated in coastal towns in Spain, and clearly the importance of this saint to people on a small island needs no explanation. The name Carmen is a derivation of Carmel (a mountain in northern Israel) which is one of the titles given to Our Blessed Mother, namely, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order. Events take place in many parts of the island because of the importance of protecting the island’s seafarers and fishermen and it’s usually celebrated in Ibiza Town, San Antonio, Es Cubells, Portinatx and La

Savina in Formentera. It all starts with mass followed by a procession in the streets of the statue of the Virgen del Carmen. In many places the procession from the church is followed by a sea procession, in which floral offerings are placed in the sea during a blessing. It usually ends with food and live music in true fiesta spirit. At the time of going to press, details had not been released of all the events, so check locally for details and what time it’s happening.

Ibiza Town In Ibiza Town the statue of Carmen resides in the church of St. Elmo (Iglesia San Telmo) in La Marina. During mass the statue is blessed and then carried along Calle de Virgen, which is decorated with palm fronds and flowers for the occasion. She is carried onto a boat in the port and taken out to sea, accompanied by a flotilla of accompanying boats. Once out of the harbour, there is a blessing and a floral sacrifice is offered to the sea in a bid to ask for protection for the seafarers for another year. Once back on land, she is carried along the port and delivered back to the church, where she stays for another year. It’s not a sombre occasion – the boats all sound their horns and it’s a very jolly affair. Mass usually begins at 7pm.

Es Cubells In the village of Es Cubells, the church is dedicated to the Virgin Del Carmen, so the fiesta is important there. After mass, they do a short procession from the church, followed by Ball Pagés (traditional Ibicenc folk dancing) and live music. This year the fiesta lasts for 3 days, starting on the Saturday night with a foam party for kids at 5.30pm and then live music from 8pm with local bands The Sequioia Tree and Fuel Pressure Regulator. On Sunday there’s a mass at 10.30pm followed by a procession down to the sea. On Monday, for the main event, mass starts at 8pm and the procession and dancing is followed by live music from Musicaires Swing Band at 9.30pm. Full programme here: http://www.santjosep.org/ agenda/festes-del-carme-2018

San Antonio The fiesta is usually celebrated in San Antonio too, their celebrations will take place on Sunday 23rd July.

Portinatx One of the places where Carmen is celebrated the most. If you’re in Portinatx on the 15th, there will be a parade with a band from 7.30pm and at 8pm the Virgen will leave in the procession.

n the night from San Juan, one of the island’s prominent and emblematic artists passed away. Roger was born in Beaconsfield on October 4th, 1943 , the middle of three brothers. On the Island since 1973, he worked for over 40 years in Ibiza. His primary inspiration was from nature, and oil on canvas his medium. Whereas he put a strong bias on landscapes there are also portraits among his work. As a former Sanyasin of Baghran Sri Rajneesh, he had a strong affinity to India and its spirituality and was a lifelong proponent of meditation. He loved Asia and worked extensively in India and the Far East. In 2006 he initiated a project to aid children in Cambodia: With his own money, he started a painting school for children. He held exhibitions in Ibiza (El Mensajero, Club Diario, Galería B12) and beyond including Berlin, Madrid. From 2005 through 2015, he was one of the prominent proponents of the Art Club Ibiza, an artists’ association, and its initiative Ruta Del Arte which invited art lovers to the studios of local artists by staging an exhibition, and published a magazine profiling the island’s visual artists. The following quotations are taken from various entries in the Ruta del Arte magazine. They give an insight to the man behind the easel.

owever much we may aspire to ‘live the dream’ under the Mediterranean sun, there are a few things from our native land that are commonly missed among the British & Irish community in Ibiza.

Internet Not so long ago, Ibiza had universally poor internet service, which in some areas offered little more than dial up modem connection speeds. Things are changing, and those parts of the Island covered by Fibre Optic enjoy

300mb speeds that exceed those back in Blighty—but there are still many areas of Ibiza that have very patchy service at best. Satellite and 4g internet reaches the parts fixed connections cannot, and though other services are available, that offered by Fusion has the added advantage of operating through a UK VPN, giving access to all UK location reliant services without any additional software or connection gizmos.

Television Our refusal to give up sports & soaps has meant UK Satellite TV has been available in Spain for many years, however all of Satellite Solutions, A.H. Satellite and Fusion, also offer a range of alternatives including IPTV running through your internet connection, and multi channel boxes that take your TV beyond our native shores to global services with the sports fan’s reassurance of ‘if it’s on, you can get it’.
