Will The West End? San Antonio Town Hall create Special Acoustic Protection Zone around the West End.

Reduced opening hours from 5a.m. to 3a.m. and strict new soundproofing requirements, with decibel metres connected directly to the Town Hall. Terraces and on-street food vendors to be closed at midnight. Prohibition of new ‘party business’ licences. Heavy fines and forced temporary closures to venues that did not follow the regulations in 2017

herever your sympathies lie in the debate over the West End, there is little doubt that San Antonio Town Hall mean business in implementing tough new controls that have the potential to change the Town forever. The Council and their supporters say they are reclaiming San Antonio. The West End businesses and their allies say they are destroying it. The British tabloids are loving every minute.

The West End probably has a greater ratio of British and Irish businesses, workers and tourists than anywhere else in Ibiza. Its future is important to many in our community. Inside we have a full report including two very different, but equally well reasoned, opinion articles by Martin Makepeace and Danny Kay. See pages 6 & 7.

Endangered Flora to be Protected via Tourist Tax Funded Initiative The Balearic Government and Ibiza Consell have announced details of a new conservation plan to protect Ibiza’s endangered flora. The initiative will be funded by the sustainable tourism tax introduced in 2017. ‘Pla Font I Quer’ was presented at Ibiza Consell headquarters, and detailed plans to conserve and replenish 19 species of flora categorised as being endangered or of special interest.

One project involves an investment of 248,000 euros from the funds made available by the sustainable tourism tax, levied on all overnight stays in the Balearic Islands since its introduction last year. In attendance were the Deputy President and Minister of Tourism and Innovation, Bel Busquets, accompanied by the Minister for the Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries, Vicente Vidal, President of the Council of Ibiza,

Ibiza-San Antonio (Southern Route) (LN08) will run from 23.00 with the last departure from Ibiza at 02:00 and the last departure from San An at 03:00. It will follow a Southern route through San Jose with stops including Cala de Bou and San Jordi. Ibiza-San Miguel (L25), which also stops at Santa Gertrudis, will start at 21:00 and run until 02:30 The rates are the same as for Discobus, i.e. 3.50 euros per single ticket, 1.85 Euros T-General, 1.75 euros for users of T-Silver and free for users of T -Jove and TGold. Vicente Torres, and the island councillor of the Environment, Michael Vericad. The scope of the plan “covers various areas of the islands of Ibiza and Formentera and the surrounding islands. It includes areas that are part of Natura but, but will also extend to include studies to identify populations elsewhere” Minister Vidal explained. To mitigate threats to the endangered species, and 8 point plan has been put in place. Steps include the control of invasive species, creating a seed bank and taking specimen plants, and issuing environmental advice through information campaigns and outreach activities. The minister also said that the nineteen species and subspecies have been selected taking into account state and regional regulations on the protection of species and the Red Book of Flora of the Balearic Islands, among other documents. Speaking for the Consell, Miquel Vericad said the initiative was welcome and much needed following many years of “chronic neglect”. Deputy Bel Busquets stressed that “tourism benefits directly, since maintaining and improving the natural beauty of our islands, in this case the richness and originality of flora of the islands, is important in maintaining Ibiza as an attractive place to visit.”

2 More Electric Car Charging Points in Growing Network Another two charging points have been added to the ever growing network of electric charging points around the Island. The latest are both located in Ibiza Town, one on carrer Balears de Vila and another on carrer Ernest Ehrenfeld.

News Ibiza and Formentera’s Economic Growth is the Highest in the Balearics, and the Balearics Growth is the Highest in Spain. Government Predicts the Islands Will Become the First and Only Area of Spain to Achieve Full Employment in 2018. Ibiza and Formentera have a GVA* of 17.9% on 2008. The Balearic Islands have a GVA of 9.2%. Much of Spain has experienced little or no growth in their GVA in the same period. The success of Ibiza and Formentera’s economic performance compared to the rest of Spain, was brought into sharp focus this week through ministerial announcements predicting the Islands would achieve full employment status in the summer of 2018. The Pitiuses’ unemployment rate currently stands at 5%, however with levels of growth far outstripping any other region in Spain, the Minister of Labour, Commerce and Industry, Iago Negueruela and the General Director of Employment and Economy, Llorenç Pou, feel it is only a matter of time before a zero rate is attained. The predictions came following the latest Spanish quarterly economic bulletin, which described the Balearic recovery and performance as ‘intense’. “The Pitiuses will touch full employment this summer” said Negueruela, “far ahead of any other area of Spain.” Government statistics show that Ibiza and Formentera have recorded 12 consecutive quarters with growth of over 3 percent. Their report states that the Islands were the first territory in Spain to officially come out of the economic crisis, and hold a “more advanced expansive phase” than the rest of the Balearics and Spain as a whole. The economy of Ibiza and Formentera shows a growth of 17.9% on the GVA* of 2008, the whole of the Balearic Islands by 9.2%, with Spain quoted as having “barely recovered its pre-crisis position”.

There was a time when Gross Added Value in relation to Ibiza’s employment would have meant the disgusting but hilarious afterparty tricks of Luke the Puke from Huddersfield. Dexter Jones’ new nostalgia-fest Facebook group ‘Ibiza Worker 2000-2010’ is filling our feeds with a decade of decadence, and we love it.

Ibiza & Formentera Predicted to Achieve Full Employment in 2018, with By Far The Highest Gross Added Value in Spain Such economic success does not come without its challenges. With many businesses reporting great difficulty in recruiting and retaining staff in Ibiza over recent years, the prospect of full employment may give employ-

ers as much cause for concern as it gives the Government cause for celebration. *GVA = Gross Value Added, a key metric used in the calculation of GDP (Gross Domestic Product). Put simply, GVA is revenue, minus the cost incurred in obtaining the revenue.

‘Deathtrap’ Crossings to Go on the Ronda de Ses Paisses The Executive Council of the Island Consell have approved the much discussed project to improve the Ses Paisses by-pass, known locally as the Ronda de Ses Paisses. The project includes development of the three intersections on the stretch of road that leads from the main San Antonio to Ibiza Road, through to Cala de Bou and the start of the San José Road. Two of the intersections are an unusual type of semi roundabout, that are both abused by motorists, and even if used correctly, often leave drivers with a feeling of taking their life in their hands when traversing the fast traffic on the main carriageway. A risk reduction is considered a priority, with this stretch of the El30 categorised as a TCA (traffic accident concentration) in the highways plan of Ibiza. In addition to the change in these turnings, improvements will be made to the existing roundabout at the San Antonio end of the road, and also drainage and lighting improvements. The work has a budget of 700,000 euros and is expected to last 3 months. There is no indication of when the works will commence, but they wouldn’t possibly do it in the height of the tourist season – would they?

Seven Pines Resort Ibiza

Nick Gibbs

The new Seven Pines Resort Ibiza does look to be something rather special. For many people, the location of Seven Pines will be known to them from days on the water as the spectacularly positioned, unfinished development, midway between Cala Conta and Codolar. How many of us have said 'what a waste, why doesn't somebody finish that?' over the last few years? Well now they have. Jörg Lindner and Kai Richter are the managing partners of German development company 12.18 Investment Management. Their company blurb states that "(the company) firmly believes that only something special and unique can be successful in the long term and combines economics and ecology, efficiency and growth". Any new Ibiza development is bound to be scrutinised for its environmental impact. Environmentalists will want to hold them to their word in combining economics and ecology, however in this respect they already have a huge advantage in that their development is that of, what is in effect, a brownfield site.

12.18 employ 1,100 people in their owned and managed hotel and leisure sector properties, the hotel arm of which extends to a shy short of 4,500 beds based on 183 million euros of investment. The Cala Conta Seven Pines Resort opens May 2018. With the sea to one side, and pine forest to the other, the Seven Pines Resort extends to some 56,000 square meters. The all-suite clifftop resort is described by the developer as "set in whitewashed Ibicenco-style homes that respect the island’s authentic design with contemporary touches". The Resort has 186 suites along with restaurants, bars, a full service spa, pools and gardens, and if that isn't enough they even have their own Pershing yacht available for guest transfers and private charter.

Thomas Cook to open ‘Casa Cook’ Hotel in Cala Gracio

8th March 2018

Thomas Cook have confirmed their intentions of opening a hotel in Cala Gracio, north of San Antonio, under the Casa Cook brand. The Cala Gracio plans are said to include the redevelop-

vate Villa incorporating several of the individual units. Decor is described as "contemporary yet comfortable" with a consistent style of neutral tones with turquoise accents throughout the resort. The largest of these also have their own swimming pools.

Pool Suites Located in the heart of Seven Pines is a collection of Pool Suites each with terraces or balconies, and a central lagoonstyle swimming pool with its own chiringuito-style bar. There are also outward-facing suites with their own swim-up pool, with which the developers have aimed to create the feel of a resort-within-a-resort.

Cliff Suites In a prime position for the sunset are four two-bedroom Cliff Suites with private gardens and pools. Each room also comes equipped with its own House Bar and Illy coffee machines, allowing a private retreat if required.

ment of an existing property – and an adjoining plot of land. The plans state they will be opening a 200 bed hotel in the summer of 2019. Ingo Burmester, Thomas Cook chief hotels officer, said: “I’m particularly excited to develop our first Casa Cook in Spain – and in Ibiza, the perfect destination for the Casa Cook customer who looks for a beach retreat to match their urban lifestyle.” Full story ... https://theibizan.com/thomas-cook-hotel-in-cala-gracio/

Developer Hispania Activos Inmobiliarios has confirmed plans for a 15 million euro development of the 3 hotels purchased in 2017 at a price of 32 million euros. The three hotels account for the vast majority of beds in San Miguel, and once complete the resort will become to all intent an exclusively 4 and 5 star beach location. The 3 hotels presently have around 500 rooms/1,000 beds between them, however this number is expected to reduce as a result of development to 4 and 5 star standards. According to a spokesperson for Hispania, the company wants to completely gut and refit the Club Galeón and the Cartago Hotel, and demolish and rebuild the San Miguel Club. The three adjoining hotels dominate the San Miguel beach resort, extending out onto the hamlet’s west facing cliffs. The new enclave will include three types of accommodation. A 4-star hotel for adults only, plus a family 4-star and a family 5-star. The spokesperson said that this means the hotels will “continue to receive clients of all kinds”. It is also planned to build a new spa and a beach club, with the intention of “substantially improving the quality of the cove’s attraction, which is now very obsolete”. Timescale Hispania hope to reopen the Carthage Club and the Galleon in 2018, and the Club San Miguel in 2019. Full Report https://theibizan.com/4-5-star-san-miguel/

hether your sympathies fall North or South of the argument over the West, there is little doubt that the San Antonio Town Hall mean business in pursuing the policy of, what they refer to as, reclaiming the town. The efforts of the businesses in the area to halt the changes fell on deaf ears in the Island Consell, with Ibiza president Vicent Torres giving his clear support to the Town Hall. And despite some show of force on the day, the San Antonio council were not for changing, and voted to impose what may ultimately come to be far reaching changes on the West End’s trading environment. In addition to the reduction of working hours from 5a.m. to 3a.m., further measures include the prohibition on new licences being granted within what is now demarked a special acoustic protection zone. Within days of the decision, the Council were again flexing their regulatory muscles, issuing refusals of extended licencing requests for both Privilege and Amnesia opening parties. Another few days passed and the San Antonio Council issued press detailing the progress of their tough sanctions against businesses who fell foul of the ‘open doors’ noise pollution regulations, and illegal ‘dynamic advertising’ (P.R.ing and street ticket selling) in 2017. In addition to heavy fines and a statement as to how the tax agency would be instructed to seize assets if unpaid, they have also imposed the penalty of forced temporary closures on many of the businesses found in breach of the law.

There has been a lot of political controversy emanating from the town of San Antonio recently. It seems a number of business people, vested interests and political opportunists are not happy with the manner in which the sunset resort governs itself and they have been very vocal in their outcry. I-Spy Book of an Ibiza Summer Season What did kids do before the tablet was invented? Along with making dens, 5 hour-long games of football and developing the art of communication, we had the trusty I-Spy books to while away our school holidays. Now we offer the chance to rekindle those magic moments from childhood with our very own version of I-Spy, adapted to the particular sights that come with the fast approaching Ibiza summer season.

You will want to begin something new, whether it is your career or a fresh start. Accept social invitations as they can lead to useful contacts that can help you move your cunning plans forward. Births are also indicated by this card so expect some good news within the family or for someone close to you. Be creative and inventive!

GEMINI – Eight of Swords

Friday. Robert was taken to the medical centre, however aside from malnutrition as a result of not having eaten for several days, he was considered in remarkably good health given his experience, and it was not necessary to admit him to Can Misses. Well done to all the volunteers who took part in the search

You feel besieged this month, as if there is no way out of a certain situation. Don’t put all your stress eggs into one basket! Not everything is bleak and if you stopped struggling with problems you would find solutions. Nor can you do it alone; seek trusted advice from professionals or friends who have your best interests at heart.

CANCER – The Lovers

Relationships with those you're closest to bring happiness and contentment this month. You're also presented with a few choices that if you choose wisely, will have you dancing along your merry way for joy. It’s a wonderful card for new beginnings; the people who you take on your new journey are ones that make you smile and your heart happy.

LEO – The Moon

The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth; should be your mantra this month. This applies to the illusions you've been hanging on to within yourself as well as what you have been fed by others. Don’t give your power away. Let your intuition be your guide and don't doubt it this month; it whispers your truth.

VIRGO – Ten of Pentacles

Adding to your material security is easy this month as others like what you do and are willing to dig deep for your services. This card also indicates an unexpected windfall, so you might want to speculate to accumulate. Life is offering you opportunities that a year ago would have been hard to imagine. How wonderful, so be thankful!

LIBRA – Ten of Wands

Don’t take too much on or you'll find yourself regretting it. Be mindful that Rome wasn't built in a day. Yes you do have deadlines to meet, but by being more methodical and less muddled you’ll get better results. Take time to chill out with friends or if you meditate, make sure you don't let your practice slip.

SCORPIO – Two of Wands

Don’t sit on the fence this month Scorpio, time to get back into the swing of things. Life’s a party that’s waiting for you to join it! Your problems are solvable; don’t waste valuable head space creating difficulties where few exist. Your mind is your biggest obstacle this month; don’t give in to negativity when all is in fact, OK!

SAGITTARIUS – Six of Wands

It’s an excellent month to further your career interests, but don't let all that success go to your head. Your will fail to impress someone important if you behave in an arrogant or high handed manner. Sure you're good, but if you're fighting off competition from other fire signs, it'll be a bun fight! Success with dignity shows real leadership.

CAPRICORN – Page of Swords

If you must confront others regarding their actions then make sure you know all the facts before wading in. Loved ones or associates are easily provoked, which could lead to arguments. You’re in no mood to slack off so expect to get a lot done this month; however, avoid being bossy. Best to work by yourself as much as possible!

AQUARIUS – Three of Wands

Your creative talents are being recognised by colleagues and associates and you are being encouraged to develop your knowledge and to explore new techniques. International travel is indicated and you’ll want to plan a trip to for business and pleasure. Some of you are even thinking of relocating to foreign shores and are lining up useful business contacts.

PISCES – Ace of Pentacles

Pisces love their creature comforts, which is why they're willing to work hard to get what they want. This is the best money card in the TAROT deck so is great for benefiting materially. The higher energy of this Ace brings gifts of wisdom; if we acknowledge our intuitive ability. Be open to new ideas and expand your spiritual side.

Robert is Safe & Sound

Robert Malloy was the subject of quite a stir last week, following his disappearance from his residence in Sant Eulalia. Robert, pictured, is aged 69 and suffers from Alzheimer's. Having disappeared on Tuesday, a call was made for volunteers to assist Police and Emergency services already searching for him. Thankfully he was found alive and well in a garden in Santa Eulalia—we assume a big garden as he was not found until

that his annual Ibiza trips are the highlight of his year, and being the person he is, Gerald doesn’t let the Cerebral Palsy that restricts him to a wheelchair get in the way of his adventures. Quite humbling really when most of us moan about lugging a suitcase to the check in. Gerald has set up a Facebook page through which he wants to connect to more people in Ibiza. The more the merrier, but I have been asked to mention that he has a particular interest in hearing from Spanish girls—one look through his photo archive and that will come as no surprise. https://www.facebook.com/ geraldibiza/

Community Coffee Break

Who doesn’t love a nice cup of tea or coffee when out and about, and especially if the view is stunning? I love finding new coffee shops, and the more quaint and Spanish-looking, the better. This article will feature some places in San Antonio. The first coffee shop is Rita’s Cantina’s (above) situated on Passieg De La Mar. You can’t miss Rita’s, complete with outdoor terrace overlooking the sea. They also serve sandwiches, salads and other snacks. The décor is all browns and creams, with portraits on the walls. There’s always a lively vibe about the place. Kvida, also situated at Passieg De La Mar, have a lovely outdoor and inside seating area, including upstairs which has an amazing view of the sea. Another café, this time a bright and vibrant one is Harinus at Carrer De Sant Antoni, next door to the clothes shop, Inside. They serve delicious cakes, pastry’s, sandwiches, which are all displayed in the window, and more. It’s a pretty place, all white and grey, and very modern. The coffee is served with patterns and images in, such as a leaf, love heart, bear etc. La Carlota, another café / restaurant is right next to the church, on Carrer Ample. lf you like churches / historic buildings, it’s a lovely view. The staff are also really pleasant and helpful. Budda Bar on Carrer Ponent is also a great place to have a drink and relax. The outdoor terrace is very spacious and overlooks the beach. There are even canopy beds if you fancy a bit of shade. Last but not least, the café’s along the sunset strip have the best views too and perfect for watching the sun go down.

Chris ‘China’ Vanssen, R.I.P. With great sadness we must announce the passing of Chris Vanssen, known and loved by everybody as ‘China’. China passed away in Can Misses hospital on the evening of Saturday 17th March 2018. He had suffered a short illness. He was admitted to Can Misses on the Wednesday preceding. A close friend said they believed him to be 72. Though I personally only had the honour of knowing China in recent years, the universal love and warmth held for him was reflected in a steady stream of ‘can you put us in touch with a man called China’, contacts in our inbox. These dated back to his time in San Antonio West End including the OK Coral, where he clearly made a long lasting impression on those he met, however briefly. China worked with the Ibiza Sun in its early days, and until 2016 was diligently distributing the newspaper around the island. An active member of the English speaking Church of Ibiza and Formentera, China was a welcome visitor to

Ibiza’s residential homes for the elderly, and I have no doubt that there would be many, many, more selfless acts of care and kindness that could be listed here by the Ibiza community – that was the man he was. Though my own time knowing him may have been briefer than many in Ibiza, it didn’t take more than one social encounter to appreciate China as a special person, and a few heart-to-hearts more, to realise he was one of the very best. China was one of that very rare breed in Ibiza, totally genuine, no agenda – he had an infectious and inexhaustible level of positivity and desire to see the good in people. And he was bloody good fun too. A public service of thanksgiving for his life was held on Tuesday 20th March at The San Rafael Church. Ibiza’s long standing ex-vicar Bob Allen sent a tribute which was read on his behalf, and China’s son gave a moving eulogy in which he spoke of his father’s positivity to the large number of mourners in attendance. We will all miss China, a great loss to our community. R.I.P.

Shebizan Amanda O’Riordan elcome to this week’s instalment of fashion and lifestyle, as we hit April and the long and winding road to Summer has its destination in sight. Having just popped over to the Balearics, the temperatures were heading north, which kicked me into summer mode. Until being brought crashing down to earth upon returning in London, that is. Rain (and single digits) dominated the grey and miserable skyline. The Easter chocolate fest is over, thank God. When it’s raining outside and the fridge is full of Easter eggs, it’s a dangerous distraction. But I can see clearly now, as we count down to the Ibiza summer season, with spring and summer fashion filling our shops and wardrobes. The pre-summer diet goes handin-hand with that, of course. In this issue we explore the Foreskin Facial, which has taken Hollywood by storm, and check out this season’s musthaves, to coincide with the longer brighter days on the horizon. Celine’s Plastic Bag

Now, I get the whole ‘plastic trail’ thing and I guess reusing your ‘bags for life’ for the shopping is very valuable in ending that trail – as long as you remember them – and if you don’t, it’s 10p for a new one. But what about a fancy fashion plastic carrier bag? I know the majority of high-end designer bags are large and made of paper. You can now buy a plastic shopping bag at posh Céline, but it’s going to cost you. The bag made its ‘debut’ on Céline's SS’18 catwalk show by Phoebe Philo – her second-to-last for the brand. Among tailored capes, pleated skirts, and structured leather bags, was a clear plastic bag, with the familiar Céline logo on the front. It was a play on the kind of shopping bag you might grab at Tesco, certainly not the Céline boutique itself, which

includes paper shopping bags nearly as gorgeous as the goods that lie perfectly packed within them. As Phoebe is not known to tease the fashion crowd, you’d better believe that baby was going to be for sale - eventually. What a way to bow out of a 10-year career at the helms of the label – with a plastic bag. From now until May 29, you can get your hands on this very special shopping bag from Céline, though it certainly comes at a price. Ringing in at an eye watering £450, the iconic clear bag is definitely an investment piece and a conversation item. For Gods sake look after it if you are mad enough to purchase one. Alternatively, trusty old Amazon offers its very own personalized plastic bag service at a fraction of the price.

Overalls For Men

The Chanel Bucket Hat

Remember Liam Gallagher ‘avin it large’ in his plastic-bucket hat (ed—round our way they were called beanie hats) during his 90s heyday? Little did he know that decades later, fashion Gods Chanel would be taking inspiration and re-producing their very own version, creation the ultimate fashion accessory of the season …. an embarrassing rain cap. Enter: The Chanel Plastic-Bucket Hat. In this tricky period between our never ending winter hibernation and hopefully some kind of summer, it pays to think more about accessories than clothing. Plus we can guarantee plenty of rain, whatever the season (ed—remember Amanda alternates between London and Ibiza readers). But if you fall victim to this trend because it’s Chanel, then shame on you because they look ridiculous. I understand it's a Chanel hat, it’s expensive and it won’t make you feel guilty that you’ve gained a few pounds over the winter, plus I suppose it will still be a statement piece, investment and weather-appropriate six weeks from now, and if you choose a sensible shade, it will go with everything in your wardrobe… But it’s ugly as hell. Go ‘mad for it’ at your peril.

Functional outdoor clothing has been inspiring menswear design for a few seasons now. Think Prada’s nylon anoraks and Louis Vuitton’s hiking boots, plus lots of other pieces generating a macho “man in the woods” image. Without getting down and dirty, of course. But the best “outdoor” fashion revival to happen so far has to be Men’s Overalls. (Sniggers) Overalls were created at the end of the 18th Century as cover-up protection for working men, first mass-produced by Levi Strauss. 128 years since overalls’ birth, they have retained their functional role as genuine work wear, as well as being reborn in pop culture and fashion. I’m pretty sure I wore “dungers” to the odd rave in the early 90s. But now the bib-front onesie for men is THE fashion statement for 2018. Actor Chris Pine was recently spotted at Heathrow Airport wearing a Carhartt version, storing his passport and travel documents the overalls’ bib pocket. Nice. Every teenage boy’s favourite label Supreme have released their next seasonal collaboration with The North Face, including overalls in metallic silver, yellow gold, and rose gold. This trend could be down to Rihanna, who featured army-green overalls for men at her Spring 2018 Fenty x Puma catwalk show. Or maybe overalls’ newfound popularity is thanks to Chance the Rapper, who always seems to wear overalls at public appearances, though his take is less outdoorsy and inevitably trendier. Wherever you trace the trend back to, it looks like men are going to be getting busy in their overalls in 2018. Get them to paint the garden fence while they’re at it, girls.

When we hear the words ‘comfy shoes,’ most of us think dull looking shoes, flats even, sensible shoes you wouldn’t wear on a night out. They say fashion is pain, and they’re not wrong! I had a night out with the girls recently, and planned to dance for hours on the end. The night didn’t go like that at all, and that was even after a few Sambuca’s’. My feet were absolutely killing me, and it was because of my heels. So, this article, I wanted to write about shoes which not only look good, but feel good too. The best shoes I have ever worn on a night out are platforms and wedges. My black and white platforms especially, which I purchased from a shop in Ibiza Town, are the comfiest I’ve ever worn. If I’d have gone out in trainers, the difference in comfort would have been non-existent. I was able to walk to all the different bars in San Antonio, and dance, without having to keep sitting down, or drinking more wine, wishing the pain away. Wedges. I love wedges too, whether they’re normal plain wedges, or sandal wedges. The sandal wedges are

lets face it, which genuinely stays together these days? So think first.

perfect for both the daytime, and for the evening. Peep toe sling-back wedges are also stunning. Squared heels shoes. These tend to be comfier than stiletto type shoes, and much easier to walk in. Boots. There are quite a few boots which are easy to walk in and look the part. Knee-high wedge boots are so comfy to wear with dresses, or with jeans tucked into them of a daytime. There are also flat knee-high boots which are perfect with a dress or skirt, to still look a bit glam if going to a restaurant, or a casual type bar, for example. Trainer heels. These are perfect to wear with shorts of a daytime, if you don’t want to look too casual. Best websites for comfy yet sex shoes are: Wish.com, SimplyBe, Asos.

Fashion Trends For 2018

So, what’s in store for fashion in 2018? Having a browse of magazines and reading online, it seems there are a few great pieces. I’m not the sort of person to wear something just because it’s ‘in season,’ or is similar to something on the catwalk, as I’d rather wear what suits me. Some of these outfits though I would definitely wear or have worn in the past. Jumpsuits. Looks like these are here to stay for 2018 which I’m pleased about. The trouser jumpsuit is perfect for a night out with heels. Short jumpsuits can be worn in the day

teamed with sandals or flip flops. Denim. Dig out those denim jackets you may have worn ten years ago. Looks like denim is back, from denim jackets, skirts, and shirts. Jeans have never gone out of fashion which I’m glad about as I practically live in jeans. Dark navy and a lighter blue denim are regularly seen in the fashion pages of magazines now, and on many celebrities. Sheer dresses. They’re also here to stay and I quite like these. Some have a bodysuit underneath, shorts, or skirts. Whether they’re short or long dresses, or sheer skirts, they can be worn for a night out somewhere special. There are even more summery, casual ones for the daytime too. Bright colours. Pinks, oranges, yellows and greens are in. These sort of colours seem appealing for a summer’s day especially. Sequins. I particularly love sequins. They can make dresses, skirts, and tops appear so much more glamorous and sparkly. Ruffles and Fringing. These can make an otherwise plain piece of clothing appear a bit more fancy too, and have also featured on the catwalks recently. Other things which may be popular again in 2018, which I’m not over enthusiastic about are bumbags, BIG shoulder pads, and polka dots. But, if something suits you, wear it regardless of what’s hot or not at the moment.

their presence in 2017, 5.7% more than in 2016. The British continue to lead Ibiza’s Tourism business. 871,288 British visitors in 2017 equalled the total number of German, French and Italian visitors combined. 871,000 Brits is 40,000 up on 2016, but a long way short of the 1 million target set by Consell President Vicent Torres at the close of the FITUR tourism fair held at the start of 2016. Given the vocal opposition that developed during the season to what some consider the saturation point of tourism in Ibiza and elsewhere in Spain, the President may be thanking his electoral stars that his projection did not come to pass. After the UK came Spain with 685k and Italy with 431k. Perhaps the biggest suprise in pure numbers is that Holland and Belgium leapfrogged the German mar-

ket into 4th place with a narrow margin of 335k compared to a Deutschland drop to 315k. Change An unmistakable slow down was the order of 2017, and perhaps that was inevitable with numbers at a point the locals were asking the tourists to go home. It seems that both the Germans and French took the advice literally, showing a decline of 6% and 12% respectively – remarkable not so much for the consequence on numbers, but in it being the first year end any of the reported categories have reported a reduction in numbers – as far back as we can remember. The only group showing a year on year increase in the % change were the Spanish – ironic in that they already were home, though the protesters didn’t seem to notice that in their mainly English worded graffiti protests. Though tiny in number, the Scandinavian market continued a healthy increase at 11%, followed by the Italians at 8.4%, but that is where the loving stopped as far as we can identify – though it was those we cannot put a flag to, the rest of the world, that seem to be falling under Ibiza’s charms with a whopping 26.6% year on year increase – more than double that of the next grouping.

AirBNB Fined 300,000€ by Balearic Government

20th February 2018

The Balearic Government has initiated legal proceedings against AirBNB for failure to comply with the new 2017 tourist rental legislation. The case identifies 20 representative properties in Mallorca that continue to be advertised on the AirBNB portal

Page 14

after repeated warnings to the website that they must comply with the legislation. Under the 2017 law, all properties offered for tourist short term rental must be officially licenced and display their licence number in any online advertising. Government Action The Balearic Government has notified AirBNB of administrative sanction proceedings for what the new tourist letting law defines as ‘very serious infractions’. According to the regulations in force, the sanction for infringements under the defined ‘very serious’ category, will be between 40,001 and 400,000 euros. In this case, the resolution determines that it is 300,000 euros. In the event that Airbnb continues to flout the regulations, further and increased fines may be imposed. Airbnb Response Airbnb responded through a written statement that the fine is “A fine against local families who share their home and bring great benefits to Mallorca and the Balearic Islands. We share your disappointment and we will appeal this sanction,” Airbnb said, firmly believing that the laws in the Balearic Islands should “help distribute the benefits of tourism among families and the whole community, and not to keep them in the hands of few”. The statement went on to detail their claims that “the Airbnb community generated over 500 million euros for the economy of the Balearic Islands”. They have warned that Balearic families could lose 100 million euros as a result of the new Balearic legislation on housing for tourist use. Full report

Seven Pines Resort Ibiza (Continued from page 4)

Restaurants & Bars

Gastronomy at Seven Pines is led by Food & Beverage Director Francois-Xavier Fiorilla - with a career that started in Paris and has come to Ibiza following a dynamic culinary background in Spain, New York, Chicago, Dubai and Beirut together with Executive Chef Bijendra Yadav. Due to Bijendra’s private and professional travels around the world he creates unique tastes within the culinary outlets of the 7Pines Resort. His influences encompass Nepal (where he was born) via Darjeeling and the UK - including The Savoy in London - and time spent with Japanese chefs and extensive experience in the Middle East.

Cone Club The View restaurant has an enviable clifftop position and views out to sea. It is open for breakfast and a la carte dinner to hotel guests and visitors. In the evening at The View, Chef Bijendra will create simple yet exciting European gastronomy using Korean cooking techniques such as steaming, fermentation and Robata grill to bring out the fresh produce’s exquisite flavours. The restaurant’s Chef’s Table - set around an open kitchen - will have its own special menu and allow close interaction with the chef. The Cone Club restaurant is ideal for relaxed drinks and comfort dishes - Mediterranean sharing plates with Arabic and Asian influences - based around big community tables creating a warm, bohemian inspired atmosphere.

Pershing Terrace The Pershing Terrace provides another superb sunset spot. Utterly unique, the Pershing Terrace is a sophisticated cocktail bar and the first in the world that has been designed by the Pershing Yacht team to emulate the vessels’ clean lines. It will enjoy views of the sea and glowing torches to set a chic atmosphere accompanied by a chilled-out playlist.

Pool Bar The Pool Bar at the resort’s heart, the infinity pool, will serve finger food and light cuisine alongside refreshing beverages.

Room Service Plus Seven Pines Resort Ibiza will also offer in-room dining that can be ordered through the resort’s own app, serving a menu of fresh soul-satisfying delights such as creative sal-

ads, dishes with Cambodian influences and light cuisine with Middle Eastern spices - all delivered by bike and served on natural, bio-degradable tableware. Guests in the larger suites will also be able to order a private BBQ chef who will come to the suite’s garden and cook a feast on the grill for family and friends. For an even more celebratory feel, a bar and mixologist can also be arranged.

Spa

A 1,500sqm "oasis of pampering", Pure7, The Spa at Seven Pines Resort Ibiza will offer a wide range of "relaxing, rebalancing and reinvigorating treatments will seamlessly blend natural and organic elements with the latest cosmetology". The spa is comprised of six treatment rooms including a spa suite for couples, complete with a private balcony, a thermal circuit (including steam bath, sauna, cold mists and water beds), and beauty space with salon services that include manicure and pedicures, hair and make-up.

Weddings & Events

The Resort is bound to prove a popular choice for high end weddings, and Seven Pines also aim to work in the corporate entertainment and conference/events markets. Seven Pines will be a year-round resort. Rates vary within season and occupancy, however "guests will be able to experience the resort starting from around 590€ per night.

Fancy It?

We had a look at availability online - and though accepting the upper end of their tariff may be a little beyond the humble means of your local newspaper editor, it is the most expensive we are all interested in right? The booking engine was appalling on our visit - surprisingly so for such a high end site. If it were a budget 2 star I'd have given up on the impossibility of selecting the required arrival and departure dates without the system jumping all over the place and randomly choosing whatever date it seemed to find fit regardless of your selection. Finally having fixed in place a 9 day stay late August to September (I wanted a week in June, and the glitches were nothing to do with availability), the entry of ages for my 2 children was counter intuitive, with the site appearing to be working but actually requiring me to re-search. On finally getting to something I'd book, I scrolled down to

find the two 'best' available options, far from immersing me in images of unbridled luxury, reflected the two Cliff-Top Duplex suites with one broken picture, and another of what could be some Homebase garden furniture. Underwhelming. The description for the 3,000€ per night Duplex reads "The Cliff Suites with an excellent location in the most soughtafter corner of the resort and enjoy panoramic views of the sea. All duplex suites have independent access to ensure inconspicuous arrival and service delivery, while their location right on the cliff offers mesmerizing views of the coastline. These Cliff Suites are perfect for guests looking for a unique paradise." I didn't proceed to booking, and I would think even the most well heeled 2 + 2 families would be reluctant to enter their credit card information to a website with the Seven Pines website's mind of its own. Had I have done so, my bill for the accommodation would have been 27,000€ for the 9 days, which does include breakfast buffet, but does not include tourist tax. (Call me Victor Meldrew, but if I read a 2,50€ tourist tax addition on the bottom of my 3,000€ daily factura, I might, how can I put it struggle not to exclaim my surprise.) I am sure that the website will be resolved - I know how many problems even a well planned web project can present in its early days. It should not detract from what looks to be a very special development, that we can now admire from our boats, commenting "do you remember when that was just unfinished buildings?"
