San Antonio Super-Bay A 20 million euro budget has been agreed to construct a coastline paseo (promenade) in the Bay of San Antonio. The new paseo will run the entire length of the bay from Port des Torrent to join up with the existing paseo in San Antonio, and thereby create a new connected San Antonio Super-Bay. The project will take 5 years to complete, and when finished it will be possible to walk/cycle on the coastline paseo all the way from Cala Gracio north of San Antonio around to Port des Torrent. Our full report is on page 2. A word here to responses since the schemes announcement. A project of this magnitude will never find consensus of agree-

ment from the entire community. Since first publishing details I would estimate a fairly even level of response pro and con. Amongst those who do not support the project there are very valid reasons. Chris Langley has been active in the development of the bay for many years and he is opposed to the promenade on the grounds of its environmental impact. a totally fair position that can be respected on its merits. However, the majority of people opposed to the plan are presenting arguments as to how the money could be better spent dealing with San Antonio’s problems, such as street crime and street sellers. Since many of those voices are not local people anyway, I would like to share a response made to one of those objections earlier this week. I write it as a Cala de Bou Resident. Might not be front page stuff, but nowhere else left to go. “I think the people of cala de bou are fed up being treated as

the poor relation suburb of san an. We are not the same town hall, not the same police. It is like asking Liverpool to pay for Manchester's problems. Object to the prom sure, but not in comparing us and the budget's better use in San An. They have a marina, commercial centre, post office, health centre, bus station, fountains, street art installations, police station, cinema, football stadium, swimming baths, velodrome, church, and a bloody great paseo. We haven't got any of that. none. All we've got is a light up roundabout that got nicked a week after being built, and a community dirt patch with never enough bbq grills. San An's problems are not down to money anyway. Damned if we should hand over 20 million to watch them be ineffective for the next 10 years. If we wanted to do that we may as well just buy wolves”.

News Overtaking Nutter Kills Man, Flees Scene, & Released from Jail The Next Morning

Welcome to San An Super-Bay! A 20 million euro budget has been agreed to construct a coastline paseo (promenade) in the Bay of San Antonio.

Funding The 20 million euro budget also allows for improvements along the passage of the paseo including jetties and pumping stations. The project is the first major public works to use funds raised from the recently introduced eco/tourist tax, which will pay half of the total cost, 10 million euros. The Consell de Ibiza will then pay 5 million euros, with the remaining 5 million being paid by the municipalities in ratio of the amount of construction in their own borough. In effect this will leave the vast majority of that 5 million with San Jose. The new paseo will connect with the existing San Antonio paseo that currently terminates near punta des moli windmill. This will leave a few hundred metres of the new paseo to be built inside the municipality of San Antonio, with the rest which forms the vast majority, inside San Jose. The new paseo will be 5 metres wide, allowing space for pedestrians, a dedicated cycle lane, and planting/ installations. Where the new paseo has to traverse a beach, the construction will be in timber, in order to minimise any negative environmental impact.

Joint Announcement The project was announced jointly by the mayor of Sant Josep, Josep MarĂ Ribas Agustinet, and the first deputy mayor of Sant Antoni, Pablo ValdĂŠs. MarĂ Ribas said that the proposal “meets all the requirements of the type of project that should be presented to be financed with the proceeds of the ecotaxâ€? adding that the project is “environmentally sustainableâ€?, though we have no idea what the last comment actually means. Mayor ValdĂŠs said there is a “unanimity and consensus that areas of the bay have an aspect of degradationâ€?, and that the project would “wash the faceâ€? of Cala de Bou.

Comment Wow. What a week for news in San Jose. On Monday we published an article on the town hall´s intention to pursue the districts many beach clubs over licencing issues. Something I described as potentially the biggest Ibiza news story of the year. This announcement of the paseo in San An bay, is without question the biggest news of the year for Cala de Bou. I feel confident it may come to be seen as news of the decade, and my personal view is that it affords a lifeline for an area of the island that has not done well in recent times. Noticeable by their absence in yesterday´s communication re beach clubs, Cala de Bou has been left behind Ibiza´s changing face. It is one of the biggest concentrations of

tourist beds on the island, and has a sizeable resident community – very possibly the biggest in San Jose, though i have no figures to back that up. Many living and working in the area view themselves as the poor relations of the municipality. Considered by the outside world as part of San Antonio, some locals feel their own San Jose town hall is content to consider them a San An suburb, and leave the people looking to their next door municipality for the resources that would be considered essential if San Antonio were not close by. A post office, police station, that kind of thing. The area is also blighted by the abandoned hotels that are a blot of the landscape and effectively cut the bay in two, creating a deadzone that tourists do not tend to traverse. Add to this a one way system in a much criticised plan of excellence which includes busses that take its own tourists out of the area without them even seeing what the rest of their own neighbourhood has to offer. The area has/had a disproportionate ratio of all inclusives, meaning the money was never coming outside the hotel grounds. The list goes on. Despite these pressures that are to large extent outside of its control. Cala de Bou also has to look to itself in why the area has declined. Mayor ValdĂŠs said there is a “unanimity and consensus that areas of the bay have an aspect of degradationâ€?. A bit harsh? Not to my mind, I´d go further. Recently there have been exciting new developments such as the Pinet Playa Ibiza Rocks hotel, Axel Beach and the Beach Star, all of which bring a new dynamic to the bay. But walk its length of a night and you are still left with a feeling of being stuck in a 1990s seasonal groundhog day. I do walk its length occasionally, for strictly research purposes you understand, and though there are exceptions doing very well, the majority view is of year on year decline. To my mind it is the measurement of that decline against the halcyon heyday of package holidays and “a pint to a pesetaâ€? exchange rate that is of greatest concern. Those days are gone and they are not coming back. Some of the less forwardthinking businesses will understandably resist the new paseo as a change that is likely to take a lot of the already dwindling footfall away from their door. I do not know if there is comfort or reassurance available to give them. The bay needs rejuvenation and there may be casualties, but I am sure the majority will see the development as the positive it is. The new paseo will be a brilliant tool to break free of the rut. Firstly it will improve the area hugely in its own right. When is a town ever better without a promenade than with? It will give a whole new dimension and outlook for the people of the bay. But also its connection with the San Antonio paseo, itself a relatively new and very successful example of the benefits a paseo brings. The uninterrupted coastline promenade will create a San Antonio Super-Bay with literally miles of leisure and recreation accessible by people in both directions. San Antonio stands to benefit, Cala de Bou will certainly benefit. It is a tough market out there and a San An Super-Bay with its coastal artery of a modern and well managed paseo, with beautiful views and stunning sunsets, sounds a very cool place to be. Brilliant news. We come one.

Sorry but I really can’t be bothered to try and write an objective report on this. Considered it biased or editorial or whatever. We all know how dangerous the main Ibiza to Santa Eulalia Road is. We’ve all seen nutters overtaking along there and in doing so playing Russian Roulette with their lives and those of other road users. An Italian in a tourist rental car was doing exactly that – as confirmed by several eye witnesses. He caused a high speed crash that killed a 34 year old Brazilian man riding a moto who worked at the Aguas de Ibiza hotel in Santa Eulà ria. The Italian driver is said to have stopped momentarily. Then raced off from the scene. He was not caught until 8 hours later by when Police could not issue alcohol tests. And so how is he dealt with by the courts? How do we

make an example of him in an effort to make our all too unsafe roads a little bit safer? The very next morning the Ibiza court simply releases him from custody with no stated conditions of parole. Accidents happen, but driving as he was described to be driving by multiple witnesses should not be a situation where the word accident applies. It should be murder. And look out Ibiza, he could be out there driving on the roads again now. This is on top of the recent case where a young driver spent no prison time whatsoever despite being found guilty of homicide due to reckless driving whilst speeding, drunk, and on drugs. Some weird sense of priorities Ibiza. Shame the driver wasn’t found to have his stereo turned up loud, he’d probably be doing a ten stretch by now.

Hell’s Angel on the Run after Armed Guardia Civil Raid Police are hunting a Hell’s Angel who escaped their grasp during a drug trafficking operation today. Armed Guardia Civil officers carried out a raid on premises in the Montecristo industrial estate. Acting on a tip off of suspected drug trafficking, the operation resulted in one arrest and the seizure of ‘an important quantity’ of drugs in what they described as a ‘laboratory of Marijuana’. A second man was arrested in Cala Vadella as part of the same operation. The Montecristo raid was at a storage facility where several high specification cars and boats were found. It was stated that the unit had drawn attention due to

be unusually quiet during daytime hours. Police were in concealed positions however when the suspect said to be a member of the Hell’s Angels approached the property on his motorbike, he spotted the Guardia and rode off at high speed, ignoring the officer’s attempts to stop him, despite their brandishing their weapons. The Guardia say they know the man’s identification and are confident of apprehending him later today. The operation was directed by the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard of Ibiza, agents of the Usecic (Citizen Security Unit) and a UCO detachment from Mallorca.

Forest Fire Destroys 8 Hectares In San An The fire which took hold at around 4pm on Tuesday quickly spread from near the Sa Talaia car park where it is thought to have started. The wind caused it to spread quickly and it surpassed the summit approaching a residential area at the bottom of the mountain. The fire was declared level 1 and in total it took four planes and three helicopters (most coming from Majorca), two Ibanat fire engines and around 31 firefighters. Only two people had to be evacuated from their

house and the fire was stabilised by 9.20pm, however the fire was only considered as “controlled” on Wednesday at 11.45am with engines and firemen still in attendance. The fire was officially extinguished by 7.30pm in coincidence with the rains that fell. The Guardia Civil have informed Seprona (Services for the Protection of Nature) and an investigation will take place into the cause and any culpability.

51 Year Old British Man Found Dead in San Antonio Motorhome A 51 Year Old British Man has been found dead in a Motorhome The Guardia Civil are investigating the cause of death, however their initial report states that there are no indications of violence. The results of an autopsy are awaited. Guardia Civil were alerted to the discovery of a dead man via 112 early on Friday morning. It was reported that the brother of the deceased discovered the body and made the call to 112. They attended the scene at 10am. The motorhome was parked in the Ses Variades scrub land that runs behind and along the sunset strip and is

used extensively for parking. An ambulance was also dispatched however all the paramedics could do is confirm the man as dead at the scene on arrival. Removal of the corpse was instructed and Pompas Funeral transferred the deceased to the Institute of Legal Medicine who will perform the autopsy. The Guardia are waiting for the results as confirmed by the Peripheral Office of Communication of the Balearic Institute in their statement to press.

26 Disabled Access Beaches Assisted Bathing Service Sees Increase In Use Ibiza now has 26 accessible beaches throughout the island. Most are fully accessible in that the user can get from their car, parking in a disabled bay next to the walkway, which will take the user directly to the water, or to the lifeguard tower where there are amphibious wheelchairs and crutches. Assisted bathing is also available in certain beaches, the advice is to book/warn the lifeguard tower in advance as extra lifeguards maybe needed and chairs may not be available if simply turning up.

lems but walk can enter the sea and four walkers. Marí explains that there are beaches, such as Cala Comte, in which they would like to implement it, but says that its orography is "difficult". Cala d’Hort has had its disabled parking bays repainted and in Cala Bassa there are four places reserved for disabled users next to the walkway. The disabled parking bays are free and cannot be charged to the 5€ parking fee at the entrance.

Santa Eulalia

San Antonio

Santa Eulalia has two beaches which are fully accessible, Santa Eulalia itself, and Cala Llonga, both have amphibious wheelchairs and crutches located next to the lifeguard tower, the beaches have adapted bathrooms and showers with hot water. Santa Eulalia also holds certificates from UNE and Aenor for quality. “All the infrastructures are adapted. The person arrives with their vehicle, by bus or by taxi and the entire route allows them to reach the water without problems”, says Pilar Escandell, environment technician for Santa Eulalia. Last summer, the assisted bathing service offered by the Red Cross saw 170 calls for use, compared to just 25 in 2012. The service, which is offered between 11-2pm and 4-6pm, May to October. The assisted service lasts for 30 minutes. The municipality has other accessible beaches, without quality certificates. Cala Llenya, Es Figueral and Es Canar all have walkways, adapted toilets, shaded areas and parking next to the walkways. The Council are looking to make Cala Llenya ‘fully accessible’ within the next two years. Es Canar has amphibious wheelchairs; however it does not provide an assisted bathing service.

Ibiza Town

Sant Josep San Jose offer assisted bathing service in eight beaches of the municipality: Platja d'en Bossa, Ses Salines, Cala Vedella, Cala Bassa, Cala Tarida, Port des Torrent, Punta Pinet and Cala d'Hort. In these cases, users should book in advance (at the lifeguard tower or call Call 663 261 367) so that they can get extra staff and not neglect the vigilance of other bathers. On the beaches there are six amphibious chairs, two plastic crutches with which people who have mobility prob-

Hotels

San Antonio are yet to be certified for their ‘fully accessible’ beaches, and Diego Ponce stated that all beaches have accessible bathrooms except Cala Gracionetta and Cala Saladeta – both of which are difficult to access. Assisted bathing is offered in Cala Gració, Pouet, Caló des Moro and s'Arenal. The beaches all have ramps and walkways, as well as adapted shower modules and parking spaces. San Antonio also wishes to make their beaches more accessible for other disabilities i.e. posters in braille for the blind and other measures for those hearing impaired.

Vila (Ibiza Town) has three beaches, Talamanca, Ses Figueretes and Platja d’en Bossa. They all have walkways, accessible showers and the assisted bathing service. Co-ordinator of the lifeguards Javi Montilla explained many users arrive spontaneously to use the service as they know it will be available.

Sant Joan There are four accessible beaches - Benirràs, Portinatx (S’Arenal Gros), Port of Sant Miquel and Cala de Sant Vicent. They have walkways which reach the sea or amphibious wheelchairs from the lifeguard tower that can be used. The assisted bathing service is available daily throughout the season from 11am until 7pm.

Formentera Es Arenal and es Pujols are the only beaches with amphibious wheelchairs.

We wondered what disabled facilities would be available in Ibiza’s Hotels. We used leading specialist disabled holiday company Disabled Access Holidays to run some booking searches. We know that though wheelchair accessible rooms and shower facilities may not have reached the status of commonplace, they are out there. So we wanted to check on facilities that demonstrated a greater commitment to the inclusion of Disabled people in enjoying their holiday fully—and that has to mean the pool. We searched for hotels with a pool hoist and only a disappointing 3 were returned. 1) Apartments Duquesa Playa, Santa Eulalia 2) Azuline Hotel Coral Beach (PHOTO ABOVE RIGHT), Es Cana 3) Hotel Bellamar, San Antonio Bay. Searching for a ramp adapted pool the situation was even bleaker. Just the Hotel Anfora, Es Cana, (PHOTO ABOVE CENTRE) So unless Disabled Access holidays have missed some, there are just 4 hotels in the whole of Ibiza that have put their money up and gone above and beyond what is required of them. Well done those four, poor show the rest of you. And the conclusion for the disabled traveller? With 50% of Ibiza’s pool-adapted hotels, Es Canar is the place to be.

Ibiza’s Finest

“I

biza’s worldwide fame and success makes it an attractive target for any product looking for a trademark free injection of cool and style. Over the years this has led to some particularly unremarkable Ibiza branded beverages, particularly in beers. However that is not to say we do not have home grown talent that is worthy of carrying the Ibiza name. We have showcased four of Ibiza’s finest.

Can Rich began its activity in 1997 by planting 17 hectares of vineyards with traditional and foreign varieties. In 1999 the winery was built, incorporating new processing techniques and in 2007 they planted a new plantation of 4 hectares of vineyards and 3,000 olive trees exceptional environments, such as the Ses Salines Natural Park. Care is taken in understanding the culture of the wine and the respect for nature is reflected in the quality of their products, which serve to convey the uniqueness of the climate and the lands of Ibiza. The harvest is picked manually in the month of August and the grapes transported as quickly as possible to the winery to avoid oxidation. The vines are conducted in trellises and cultivated following the rules of the Balearic Council of ecological Agrarian production. They have a large selection of wines produced. Along with the 4 listed, they have Tinto Selection, Bes Rosado Can Rich, Blanco Ereso, Tinto Lausos and Vino Dulce de Licor Can Rich. Stockists: Many bars and restaurants will have it on the menu, but it is readily available in most supermarkets and smaller shops. Price: 8.00—11.00€ (online)

From the range we will include the full range on the web version ... Blanco Can Rich, 12.41% Chardonnay and Malvasia grapes After a smooth pressing of the grapes you get a must-have flower, which is fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature.

Ibosim Craft Beers

The One & Only Hierbas Ibicencas

The Microbrewery with big beers

Hierbas, or of course as most of us will have started out assuming, Yerbas, is THE Ibiza drink, by THE maker. With its so distinctive triangular bottle, we may not have loved it the first time we had one, but most come around to it as part of their Ibiza love affair.

Ibosim BrewHouse is the first microbrewery on the island of Ibiza. They brew a range of Beers that would be perfectly at home in a UK beer festival.

Ask 100 locals what taste they would most associate with Ibiza and 95 will say Hierbas. The other 5 don’t drink. This is why the company say it is special. “Born of a unique terrain, the countryside of Ibiza and Formentera - with its rich diversity of microclimates which provide the specific quantities of minerals and moisture that lend its aromatic plants their excellent properties. This means that the wild aromatic plants and those cultivated on Ibiza and Formentera have properties that have a unique effect on the human body.” For more than 130 years Familia Marí Mayans has been dedicated to researching aromatic plants and making high quality and tasty liqueurs. This knowledge and the artisan techniques have been passed down through generations ensuring their seal of quality and tradition. Juan Mari Mayans, around the year 1880, had other ideas and with his llaüt he travelled over and back from Barcelona supplying the island with objects and utensils not found there. He knew the secrets of the still and how to distil alcohol. Juan Marí Mayans, had a keen interest in aromatic and medicinal plants and studied their properties, later developing an interest in distilling drinks and liqueurs. In 1997, the Hierbas Ibicencas geographical designation was approved, affording the geographical name a level of protection, guaranteeing the quality of the product and preventing unfair competition. Stockists: Everywhere - clubs, bars, restaurants, supermarkets, tourist shops, THE airport ‘flight back’ gift. Price: around 10€ for 70cl (online), but prices vary.

Not to be confused with, or dismissed because of, the crop of beers that have put an average lager in a fancy bottle and crowbarred Ibiza into the name somehow, Ibosim are the real deal. Ibosim was the name given to the island of Ibiza by the Carthaginians and means Isle of god Bes. Now it is a very apt name for a beer, as the wee Bes was considered the god of good mood and fun. Many refer to him as the party god. We are big fans in the Ibizan office. My personal favourites are the Summer Ale, which also affords the first opportunity in many years to create a ‘Light & Bitter’, and the Rosemary Ale— and no it doesn’t taste anything of Rosemary. Well perhaps a not, but the important thing to stress is that it is not some hippy dippy vegan thing, it is not like sweet jasmine and mint tea is to PG Tips. This is very much the PG Tips end of the beer spectrum. Stockists: Maxims, a great place to drink it as Jane lets youselect your own music whilst drinking (providing it is guitar based obs), Relish, or visit the Ibosim bar, which is also the microbrewery in Port Des Torrent. Price: 3.60€ each (online)

From the range we will include the full range on the web version … Blood Moon Ipa, 6,7% ABV | 60 IBU Our apocalypse beer for hop lovers. Aroma explosively fruity, complex and enveloping. Robust and balanced. Ibz Summer Ale, 5.5% ABV | 45 IBU Ibz Summer is a bold and different beer, with a slightly coppery color, aromatic with hints of mango, passion fruit and orange.

News could fall either side of the beach club/restaurant velvet rope. Bora Bora has faced ongoing problems because of its restaurant only licence over the past two years, though again why it came up as an issue after two decades of dancing with the same restaurant licence they hold today nobody knows. Next door neighbour Jet would seem a likely candidate for the second of the seven. Then for the remaining five it is take your pick from ‌ White Eivissa, The Beach Club at Hard Rock Hotel, El Chiringo, Beach House, Nassau, Tanit, Coco Beach, and any number of new ones that may have sprung up as they seem to with routine predictability.

Summary

Sa Trinxa on Ses Salinas, the only beach not included in San Jose’s notices. Well who would have the heart to stop these happy folk. They may be having the best afternoon of their lives.

San JosĂŠ tells 16 Beach Clubs, “You do not have a licence, you can apply, but we are not going to grant it. That means no live music & no DJsâ€?. The same San JosĂŠ municipal town hall that last week told all of its beach clubs they had to turn the music down, has now told the same beach clubs that they are not beach clubs and never were beach clubs ‌

Background San JosĂŠ have taken a new direction in their fight to reclaim the municipality’s beaches which has seen an influx of the beach club business model in recent years. San Jose’s coastline is comprised of many small beaches and one very long one at Playa d’en Bossa adjoining Ibiza Town. Historically most beaches would have one or two traditional family owned restaurants, and perhaps some simple ‘chiringuito’ bars. The explosion of interest in Ibiza’s daytime party sector has resulted in a complete change of identity for many beaches as the locals move out and the DJs move in.

Fight them on the beaches There has been considerable opposition to the beaches losing their peace and quiet, but it isn’t just about the music. Many residents and tourists have complained at being excluded from empty areas of beach that the clubs say is reserved for their clients only – and that now comes with a hefty price tag many times what was charged for sunbeds and parasols before the new clubs arrived. There have been claims of heavy handed treatment by the club security staff, and of encroaching beyond their permitted limits – though there is often a lack of clarity as to exactly where those limits are. This new demarcation has brought the shift towards the VIP market into sharp relief on some beaches where the remaining public parts are packed full, with those who want and can afford to pay, in spacious comfort just over the tape. On the other side of the argument the businesses say they are just responding to a changing market and that if they did not Ibiza would lose the tourism income. Those who are pro the idea of adapting to this undeniably present demand will say that the importance is far greater than the money taken in the till in a summer season. They argue that at a macro level any inability to meet this demand on Ibiza’s part would result in a loss of its brand leading position and reputation – and with destinations such as Croatia soaring in popularity and working in far less restrictive administrative and regulatory controls, there is little doubt that there will be plenty of Ibiza’s competitors that will be only too pleased to offer the market what Ibiza will not. They will be able to do it at a far lower price as well. We cannot know whether San JosÊ’s position is one of thinking there is little or no risk of losing the tourist income from this upscale party people market, or whether they know the risk but feel it is one worth taking, that Ibiza would be better served with its beaches returned to their pre-beach club state, even if the tourists went elsewhere. But regardless of their motivation and stance, there is little doubt they want the beach clubs stopped. Their position is strengthened by the new Balearic Tourist law passed two weeks ago that specifies any individual municipality can take their own decision to strengthen/make tougher their own rules relating to entertainment licencing. They cannot relax the regional standard, but they can make it more strict. In this context they announced last week that all beach clubs would have to reduce their noise levels from the current 85db to the lower 65db by the start of next season or face very tough fines. It seems the lawyers must have been hard at work behind the scenes as their announcement this week takes a completely different direction in challenging the beach clubs right to be beach clubs at all.

Paperwork & Permits Their argument is that though all the clubs in question may have registered with the central island government, the Consell, that is only a small part of the authority and registration they must hold to be a beach club. San JosĂŠ say that the clubs must also gain permission from them as the local council, and that none of them have done so. They say that without this additional registration all of the clubs are

still officially restaurants and so only entitled to work as such – with NO live music and NO DJs allowed. Though their report does not state that the additional licence for a change from restaurant to beach club would automatically be declined, their stance and position on the subject would require a change in political colour at the Town Hall before any of the clubs would be able to get that licence. With the strength of feeling in the local community as strong as it is, you would have to question any party’s likelihood of getting elected on a platform supporting the beach clubs. It is not surprising San JosĂŠ is the municipality taking action on the beach club issue – as most of them are within its boundaries. A decade ago there was one full on club. Bora Bora in Playa d’en Bossa. With a reputation as a den of iniquity, but it still had a ‘bit of rough’ charm that won a lot of us over. Then there was Sa Trinxa on Salinas, no less hedonist, but in a far less obtrusive, more bohemian, more naked, kind of way. The Jocky Club on Salinas has a DJ, but usually of the sunworn seated variety and certainly no expectation of a tempo beyond gentle sway. And to my immediate memory, that was it around 2007/8. In 2017 the map of the coast is very different. San JosĂŠ have issued 7 ‘you are a restaurant only’ notices in Playa d’en Bossa, 2 in Cala Jondal, 1 in Cala Moli, 1 in Vadella, 4 in Cala Bassa, and 1 in Cala Tarida. Port d’es Torrent Starting at the end of the bay, Cala Bassa beach club have reportedly purchased two of the 4 venues and much adjoining land of Port Des Torrent, and one of the bars they are taking over is already working as what many would describe as a beach club. Interesting to note that no Port Des Torrent bar is mentioned in the council information. Cala Bassa Cala Bassa is of course already home to the original Cala Bassa Beach Club which represents arguably the biggest change impact on a single beach – though its many fans would look at that fact as positively as its detractors would negatively. The council state they have issued 4 notices in Cala Bassa. We think they may all be to the same Cala Bassa club who own all 4 of the beach concessionaires. Cala Tarida Round to Cala Tarida and Cotton Club sits looking over the beach. Personally I have received far less complaint as to its impact than many others, but as there seems nobody else the town hall could call ‘beach club’, their elevated position has not saved them from inclusion. Can Moli At Can Moli it would have to be Bagatelle beach we assume. Cala Vadella At Cala Vadella our best guess is Maya? Cala Jondal Blue Marlin on Cala Jondal has built a worldwide luxury brand on it’s Cala Jondal origins. And quite humble origins compared to the current epitome of the high end V.I.P. luxury that has swept Ibiza. I can remember eating in the adjacent Yumanja when Blue Marlin was the young and rather gobby kid on their block. We commented on the peculiarity of a 4 poster day bed taken down onto the beach and how out of place it looked stranded someway from the building with empty space between. It would not be surprising if the Blue Marlin founders shared a smile if it turns out their empire was built on an unlicensed venue. The other Jondal candidate would be Tropicana we think, unless both Jondall’s notices apply to Blue Marlin. Salinas (not affected) As I write this Jon Sa Trinxa and Kenneth Bager will be playing the Southern sun on Salinas and hopefully news that Sa Trinxa and the Jockey Club are not included in the hit list will have the party that bit more hedonistic, though more naked would take some doing. Is Salinas excluded for any particular reason, we have no idea. Playa d’en Bossa Bossa’s long expanse of beach is now home to many venues that

This is one of those issues where the size of the battle the San JosĂŠ council have taken on will leave a lot of people doubting it will ever be fought let alone won. It is one of those issues where in the past it would raise a quite cynical and suspicious response in some people. That there was never an intent to enforce the law, it is just a mechanism to extract backhanders for not enforcing it, for letting it drop. Not that we would ever think that at the Ibizan you understand, just better make that clear in light of Spain’s gag laws – we don’t think it, but we know people who would have, a few years back. But whatever reason anyone may have to doubt the genuine nature of their agenda, There are signs that they do mean business. First, if it was just about placating the voters, last week’s announcement of the conversation quiet 65db would have done the job in keeping the electoral roll happy. So why go further? Second, San JosĂŠ recently took on the taxi drivers. Anybody with a knowledge of Ibiza government’s dealings with the taxi drivers will know that just doesn’t happen. Standard protocol is to do whatever is needed to stop upsetting them further and give a TV sound bite confirming the taxi drivers to be God’s chosen people and pirate taxis to be officially ranked alongside paedophiles. But San JosĂŠ took them on. Mid season too. So there are indicators that San JosĂŠ are up for a fight. But there is contradictory evidence too. For example it was only two years ago they sold the beach sunbed etc concessions from under the local families bums in a high bidder takes all, no questions asked sell off, that seems totally at odds with this ‘reclaim our traditional beaches’ mantra. But if they do take on this fight, and if they win it, make no mistake the consequences will be huge. The risks will be huge too. However much anybody is opposed to the Ibiza shift to VIP, were we to lose that business in the space of a few years, with nothing in its wake to replace it. There would be a lot of squeaky trousers waiting to come out the other side. But perhaps the most likely outcome is the most frequent. Lots of pontificating politicians, a few token photo-shoot denuncias, and everything will go back to pretty well normal, blind eyes turned all round and the law more of a serving suggestion than a mandatory process. After all, it is very hot. Way too hot to be doing much about anything really.

Comment I have received two direct responses from beach clubs mentioned.

One stating they have not received a letter and wanting to disassociate themselves from the report. So in that regard I will restate that the article is based upon the number of notices Sant Josep have issued to venues on various beaches, and details those venues likely to be affected. Some beaches are obvious, others such as Playa dĂŠn Bossa are more ambiguous. I agree that instead of leaving us to deduce it would have been better if Sant Josep had simply named those venues affected, or if they did not want us to know who was included, not to have given the information on how many notices were issued to which beaches. But given the information Sant Josep provided I feel the deductions and assumptions made are logical and reasonable. The other response stated that they were pleased the “other side of the argumentâ€? had been presented. Which I take to mean the risks in loosing the business generated by the clubs, and at a macro level the market sector. We have no “editorial agendaâ€? for or against. But as a writer it is good to hear positive feedback from both sides of the argument. The intent is for an objective and balanced report based on Sant Josep´s communication to press against which we have applied our own knowledge of Sant Josep´s beaches and beach clubs. For the record my own personal views. I do not see why we have to approach it on such “all or nothingâ€? terms. For beach clubs or against them. I love quiet beaches and have been disappointed when music has encroached. Port Des Torrent is a personal example. But equally I have had some of my most enjoyable and memorable times dancing on Ibiza´s beaches. For several years Bora Bora was holiday home base and on first relocating my local bar. Every restriction on its liberty, be it fences, volume, opening times, has saddened me, but I know some people find the place totally objectionable. The trouble with any system where some are allowed, some are not, is how do you set the rules. This is particularly important in a Spain trying to move on from its problems of government corruption in recent years. As to the designation of beaches the council have the necessary controls. Already there are designated dog beaches, nudist beaches, did i see talk of a no smoking beach?, so they could just as easily designate specific beaches as entertainment beaches. But how to fairly decide which ones? Although Sant Josep has the majority of Ibiza´s problem within its boundary, it is also staring the solution in its face. Well it would be if it looked up anyway. From the point of noise pollution, and that is the issue Sant Josep continue to raise, can anybody tell me what the point is in making a beach “quietâ€? when it has Boeing jets flying over it as they come in to land every few minutes? You can close every club, confiscate every radio and gaffer tape the mouths of wailing babies, but a beach on the flight-path is still not going to be quiet and relaxed. And importantly nobody on the side of reclaiming the tranquillity of Ibiza´s beaches can claim they have lost anything since the jets started arriving in numbers. As San Jose´s luck would have it the two flight-path beaches are also the two that have the longest standing clubs on them (perhaps they started when common sense was applied), and are also the two where noise has minimal impact to the resident community. So let Salinas and Bossa get on with it. Providing the service that sector of tourism wants as designated entertainment beaches, while those beaches that have been more recently developed are returned to tranquillity. Outcome is that everyone has somewhere to go to get what they want, and nobody can claim clubs are causing additional environmental pollution as the noise of the jets is greater than their own output. That is just my view. Of course it will seem totally unfair to those affected, and I have nothing against them personally.

News AEMET; 3000 bolts of lightning in 3 hours It’s the storm residents had been waiting for, to break the back of heatwave Lucifer. But when Ibiza has a storm, it really is spectacular. Planes were grounded, boats in distress, cars washed away, families rescued and the usual slip n slide in the West End. At 8.25pm all flights in and out of the airport were postponed, the runway was inoperable due to the weather and part of the exit terminal ceiling collapsed due to the accumulation of water, no-one was injured. Roads were completely submerged in Ibiza Town as well as the airport road, the lower pass of Ses Salines roundabout, with cars having to turn around – driving in the opposite direction. The San Jordi section of the airport road was closed until 10pm. There were power cuts throughout the island but Sant Jordi was affected the most with 280 houses affected. Es Cubells (photo above) was hit badly and had its

cliff road closed after the heavy rain caused floods and falling rocks endangering users. Police, firefighters and members of the Civil Protection went to the area to assist. People driving in the area were evacuated due to further flood risk and a family of 8 were trapped in their home by the storm. Playa d’es Torrent was also hit badly with vehicles swept out to sea, parasols and sunbeds damaged and the restaurant flooded. Volunteers and staff are trying to clear the storm debris. Cala Saona in Formentera was hit by a tornado/water spout which affected several boats. According to reports, at least 6 boats hit the rocks and 3 sank, there were no casualties and two coastguard vessels along with the Maritime service of Civil Guard intervened in the rescue of the boats. A yacht that took shelter in the port of La Savina ultimately sank and traffic in the port has been suspended.

The Ibiza Bible, Chap;6 Verse;4 And it is written that The West End shall be condemned, and be vilified, and all of my people will renounce it thrice daily, for it is there the devil's work be done. But the Lord sayeth unto thee, when the rains fall from heaven thou shalt fast of thy loathing for one day and say 'they are a funny old bunch of guys having a bit of fun'. And so it came to pass. Sant Antonio of the West was hated and vilified by all of the people, except for one day each year when the rains did fall. Amen.

Catalan Anarchist Group Arran Threaten More Tourist Attacks

A Marxist anarchist group protesting against mass tourism in Spain has threatened further attacks after targeting Barcelona and Mallorca (photo above).

As reported in The Independent

Barcelona Attack British tourists on board a sightseeing bus in the Catalan capital feared they were being attacked by Islamist terrorists when masked members of Arran slashed its tyres and daubed it with slogans. The group published a video of the attack online with the caption “mass tourism kills the neighbourhoods, destroys the territory and condemns the working class to misery”, sparking a police investigation. Arran later vandalised bicycles hired out to tourists in Barcelona, while a faction in Mallorca rampaged through waterside restaurants in Palma and ran over yachts, while protesting with a banner and smoke bombs. On its official Twitter account, the group claimed it wanted to “stop the mass tourism that is destroying Mallorca and condemning the working classes of the Catalan Countries to misery”. Laura Flores, one of Arran’s leaders, told The Times: “We cannot rule out more attacks. There have been assaults in the past and there will be more in the future.” Noel Josephides, the chairman of Abta, said he feared more attacks using “dangerous tactics that shouldn’t be happening”. “But reason it is happening is because the local governments haven’t been listening or taking the overcrowding seriously,” he added. “The advice to tourists is use your common sense. Be vigilant and don’t go where there might be a risk.”

majority.” Similar grievances have been rising to the surface at other popular destinations in Europe, seeing thousands protest in Venice over the damage caused by millions of visitors and radical measures aiming to reduce overcrowding by local authorities. Ada Colau, the left-wing mayor of Barcelona who rose to prominence because of her campaigning over the Spanish housing crisis, announced Arran’s violent tactics. “We denounce the attack on a tourist bus,” she wrote on Twitter. “Protesting over tourism should never mean intimidating people.” Álvaro Nadal, Spain’s tourism minister, promised an inquiry into Arran’s attacks. “We’re not going to tolerate this situation a single day longer,” he said. “A minority can’t ruin the decades of prestige for our tourist industry, which is the most competitive in the world.” The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has not updated its travel advice for Spain, which advises British nationals to stay away from demonstrations. “We are monitoring the situation and in contact with local authorities,” a spokesperson said.

The Arran Group Founded in 2012, Arran has expanded through Spain and says it struggles for Catalan independence, the “end of the capitalist system and global injustice” and feminism. It has gained support from far-left Spanish political parties and disaffected locals, with particular ire being aimed at companies including Airbnb that are blamed for shutting local residents out of the property market. Arran’s supporters deny allegations of “tourist-phobia” but claims to resist a market that “capitalises on collective assets like the natural or social environment for nothing in return”. “It is a general movement of citizens against an uncontrolled and predatory tourist model,” one supporter wrote on Twitter, while Arran’s chapter in Mallorca said: “Tourism has too many private interests, which are not the interests of the

5 Cruise Ships Dock In Botafoch Five cruise ships unexpectedly met on Wednesday at Marina Botafoch with a total of 12,020 passengers. Bad weather meant the ‘Jewel of the Seas’, ‘Celebrity Relfection’, ‘Costa Neoriviera’, ‘Aidastella’ and ‘MSC Armonia’ were all in dock at the same time bringing thousands of tourists into Ibizan Town.

Ibiza We have not been able to find any information on either the palma or national site that indicate an Arran group being active in Ibiza. There have been numerous sightings of anti-tourist graffiti in Ibiza however, using slogans including ‘tourists go home’ and ‘all tourists are bastards’ (the latter based upon the slang acronym A.C.A.B., all coppers are bastards, which is outlawed in Spain under the controversial gag laws.)

50th anniversary and Pete Tong’s Ibiza Classics Night.. We were met with Brazilian style carnival girls at the door, one I know very well, the talented dancer Lucy Yasmin. Began to feel at home almost instantly.

Destino Destino itself is a spectacle but Pacha's production and animation/events team that night didn't miss a trick, with dancers around the pool area and performances from the best drag opera singer I have ever seen and heard, and in my network that says a lot! I'll never listen to 'Part of your World' the same way again and there's nothing more camp than a falsetto drag queen diving in full mermaid costume with custom fish tail (I want it) into the most beautiful swimming pool in Ibiza. Moving through to the sunset session we were in the presence of Ibiza DJ legends. Firstly there was DJ Pipi with a quality house and disco set who made way for the great Alfredo who took us on a musical journey of classics including Mora Cante's ‘Yeke Yeke’. Performance wise, two male gymnastics stopped the bustling crowd with their amazing display of human strength with gladiator like presence and atmospheric background music I felt like I was in a Blockbuster movie..

Pete Tong’s Ibiza Classics Cap Martinet, Destino, by Claire B

Pete Tong and the 65-piece Heritage Orchestra brought their spectacular live show ‘Ibiza Classics’ to Ibiza at Destino last Saturday, and what an amazing night it was. All part of Pacha’s 50th Anniversary celebrations it was only right that this collaboration should be performed in Ibiza, it’s spiritual home. The venue was decorated with Pacha paraphernalia and adorned with dancers and entertainers to set the party scene, whilst DJs Pippi and Alfredo played great music to get the party going.

The Main Event

Starting at 10.30, the outdoor stage was filled with musicians for a change, with Pete Tong doing his thing in the middle and conductor Jules Buckley leading from the front. Beginning with ‘Right here, right now’, they played tune after tune of classics, all sounding wonderful. There were 3 singers at the front of the stage on the right and they were joined by a couple of special guest singers for certain numbers, in the form of Raye and Jessie Ware.

Tune After Tune

From the opening bars of ‘Right here, right now’ to the closing bars of ‘You got the love’, we were treated over the next hour or so to ‘Lola’s theme’, ‘Children’ which was emotional for a lot of people, ‘Till I come’, ‘One more time’ and lots more, including personal favourites ‘Insomnia’ and Moby’s ‘Porcelain’, which was truly haunting with lots of rich piano. The venue was packed full of happy people dancing away to the tunes that everyone knew and loved. But the sound of the full orchestra gave them an extra dimension and made them sound even more special. It was truly a classic Ibiza night.

and by Holly Reed On Saturday night I ventured out of the safety of a quiet and remote villa in San Jose to mingle with the Ibiza glitterati at my favourite outdoor music venue on the white isle, Pacha's Destino resort. The night began for me with a grand welcome from Pacha press who invited me along to celebrate their

Moving swiftly on from that flashback, the main event was Mr Pete Tong's Ibiza Classics show, starring the man himself. He arrives with great aplomb and rapturous applause and the 65 piece London based Heritage Orchestra rustle in their seats and I got that 'this is going to be an epic Ibiza night feeling'.. The Concert began with the rousing Fatboy Slim anthemic 'Right here Right now' and the crowd's appetite was wettened, the temperature dropped and so did the tracks, including the almighty ‘Lola's Theme’, ‘Insomnia’ and ‘Born Slippy.’ The climax for me was the finale when the 3 amazing house vocalists sang Candi Staton’s 'You've got the love'. The whole night was produced and executed very well and I would hasten to say the real Ibiza locals, ex pats, entertainment industry professionals and even the Ibiza music purists (thank you DJ James Reid for humouring me with my singalong moments) had a night to very much remember, well I certainly did.

ARIES – Eight of Cups

You need to sort out your feelings and this is an excellent week to take some ‘me’ time. Those closest to you may want to encroach; however it would be wise to insist on your space. If they’re pushy; you’d be right to question their motives. You’ve no energy for needy people while you’re examining the value of your relationships. TAURUS – The Tower Just when you thought everything was going so well you find that others are not sticking to the agreed plan. Don’t lose the plot, as you can now to see situations as they really are not how you’d like them to be. It’s worth noting that this card indicates that your ideas show a stroke of genius so crack on! GEMINI – Two of Swords Don’t sit on the fence this week Gemini, time to get back into the swing of things. Life’s a party that’s waiting for you to join it! Your problems are solvable; don’t waste valuable head space creating difficulties where few exist. Your mind is your biggest obstacle this week; don’t give in to negativity when all is, in fact, OK! CANCER – Eight of Swords You feel a little ‘off’ and are likely to be overwhelmed by deadlines or the demands of others; you feel like running for the hills! Stop struggling with impulse to have a couple of duvet days. You need this to restore your equilibrium; others will just have to get on with it. Important decisions can wait until next week. LEO - Temperance Keep a clear head regarding business matters. It's good to have a dream, but you are still in the planning stage and more patience is required before you roll out the next phase of a venture. Be assured you are on the right track; and if you believe in angels, there are a few around in human form this week. VIRGO – Page of Pentacles You’ve lots of creative ideas but how do you manifest them out into the world? It's this dilemma that blocks you from making the right choices when it comes to your career options. Your focus this week is to narrow it down to where your passions lie. If it doesn’t excite, let the idea go; concentrate on your singular talents. LIBRA - Seven of Pentacles You’ve plenty of good idea’s but be careful of scattering your thoughts otherwise nothing will be accomplished as planned this week. Having worked hard to put certain plans in to action; it would be a shame to take your eye off the ball so to speak, and to allow yourself to become distracted. Success comes from remaining focused and persistent. SCORPIO – Strength Scorpio’s are renowned for their strength; mentally and emotionally and others will be in no doubt that you’ve a back bone, not a wish bone when it comes to getting your way. Stand up for what you believe in and don’t be intimidated by anyone who insists on having things their way. That famous sting is about to be unleashed! SAGITTARIUS – Nine of Wands If you feel stuck in a rut and certain areas of life remind you of a stagnant pond, then you must try to sort this out. Others have drawn on your energy so it’s time to get some maintenance work done on yourself! Take time out for a massage, healing or wellness programme that helps you get back on track. CAPRICORN - Knight of Cups Faint heart never won fair lady, (or guy for that matter!) If you've had your eye on someone, why not make a bold move; you'll be pleasantly surprised at the response. This may, or may not be the love of your life, but what's wrong with having some fun? This Prince is the good news bear too, so expect some. AQUARIUS – Five of Wands Put your energy into new ventures; believe you can succeed this week and you will! This card implies plenty of creative energy so you’ll be full of good ideas or will want to impress others with your knowledge on certain matters. Those of you, who write for a living or work with business via the internet, will be brilliantly inspired. PISCES – Page of Swords Don’t be tempted to throw your weight around by insisting that others do things your way as this may provoke reactions you’d not counted, which could lead to arguments. You’re in a doing mood so expect to get a lot done this week, which is why you must avoid being bossy. Best to work by yourself as much as possible!

Fine Tuning of the Universe -Part 1 Rev. Dr Peter Pimentel

View From The Pew Some of us remember having to tune radios by hand to get just the right wavelength for the channel of choice. If the dial was just a little bit off clockwise or anticlockwise Rachmaninov’s second piano concerto would be reduced to a horrible screeching noise. Science has discovered that our universe is astonishingly fine-tuned to support carbon-based life forms such as ourselves. There are very precise numbers (the constants) in the equations. If the numbers and the percentages were very slightly different from what they happen to be then we would not be here to wonder about it! Think of all the possible wavelengths in our oldfashioned radio as representing the virtually infinite

possible universes. Just one very precise wavelength represents the universe we inhabit. Just one example I hope will suffice. How about this for fine-tuning? If the gravitational constant in the formula for gravitation were different by just 1 part in 1040 this universe could not support life. I part in 1040 is 1 part in 10 followed by 40 zeros! That’s 10000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000. Fine-tuning is an understatement. It’s miraculous. The list of examples could go on and on. Hundreds of numbers in the universe are just right for the existence of carbon-based life forms such as ourselves. All these finetuned numbers need also to be exquisitely coordinated. Any deviation in the num-

bers often by even an infinitesimally small amount then this universe could not have been a habitation for life. Scientists have a name for this amazing phenomenon. They call it the Anthropic Principle. It certainly does look like the universe has been engineered by an infinitely brilliant mathematician! This mathematician has designed a universe that has become conscious of itself through intelligent carbonbased life forms that can have a relationship with their maker. The great scientist Freeman Dyson expresses the Anthropic Principle in a nutshell: “The more I examine the universe and study the details of its architecture, the more evidence I find that the universe in

Agenda Art: Keith Haring Sculpture in Ibiza Ibiza Town Claire B

Art: Ibiza by Ferrer Guasch Ibiza Town Claire B

As part of the Festes de la Terra and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of renowned Ibizan artist Ferrer Guasch, there are currently 2 great exhibitions of his work in Ibiza Town. Els Blancs (The Whites) is in the Antic Refectori de l’Ajuntament d’Eivissa, which is part of the old Ajuntament building in Plaça España in Dalt Vila. The 18 paintings are of traditional white houses and buildings in and around Dalt Vila and Ibiza Town. A quote on the wall translates as, “I paint what I have always loved, white paintings, bright white, pure”, and this perfectly sums up the works on display. Open from 09.00-14.00 on Monday to Friday and also 19.30-21.30 Tuesday to Thursday. Sa Penya is in Es Polvori in Dalt Vila and displays about 30 paintings depicting the neighbourhood of Sa Penya and have more color, detail and human figures. Most of the paintings here were painted in the 70s and 80s and many are accompanied by a photo showing the location in the present day.

Open from 10.00-13.00 and 17.00-20.00 Tuesday to Sunday. Ferrer Guasch is one of Ibiza’s best-known and most appreciated artists. He studied at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes San Jorge in Barcelona. When he returned to Ibiza in 1962, he taught drawing and painting in the Institut Santa Maria (Ibiza’s High School) until he retired in 1982. He was a very prolific painter, creating about 5,000 paintings, many of which were sold on the island as well as all over the world. His paintings predominantly feature buildings and views of Dalt Vila and Ibiza Town. He said of his work, “what I am trying to reflect in my paintings is the tranquility, the peaceful harmony of its streets with its cubic white buildings, the serenity that one could feel in Eivissa.” In 2006 he was awarded the ‘Medalla d’Or’ from the Ciutat d’Eivissa, which is a great honour. He died in 2008. Both exhibitions are on until August 30. Website (in Catalan): http://ferrerguasch.com

Not to be content with the amazing Keith Haring exhibition at La Nave in Salinas, a sculpture by the prestigious New York artist has now arrived in Marina Botafoch, near to Heart. The 7 metre high iron sculpture weighing 11 tonnes called ‘Untitled (Headstand)’, was created in 1988 and it depicts two breakdancing figures in Haring’s inimitable style. He was working during the 1980s when the energy and innovative environment of the times created a boom in music, dance, fashion and art. Haring was fascinated by the choreographed breakdancing routines and street dancing which he translated into a series of unique sculptural pieces. Between 1985 and 1989,

he created 13 such monumental sculptures, which were exhibited on Park Avenue in New York in 1997, 10 years later. The piece now in Ibiza, Untitled (Headstand) was one of the sculptures from this exhibition, and truly represents the form of ‘breakdancing’. The sculpture is part of the exhibition currently on show at La Nave Salinas, founded by New York art collector and dealer Lio Malca in an old salt warehouse. Keith Haring was an American artist who drew on issues and images from popular culture in the late 70s and 80s. He died in 1990 in New York at the age of 32. The sculpture can be seen on Joan Carles I in Marina Botafoch, directly opposite Heart and the Casino until September 30.

Agenda ART: Ephemeral Ibiza Town Claire B

There’s a great exhibition of photographic-based images in Ibiza Town at the moment at the Sa Nostra Sala. Entitled ‘Ephemeral. The Retina of Experience’ it’s a collaboration between graffiti artist SUSO33, photographer Vitorino and Art Director Javier Gómez. Using photos of iconic Ibizan places taken at night as a basis (such as Es Vedra, the lighthouse at Portinatx, Salinas, the Phoenician site at Sa Caleta) they have used light to draw different presences in a series of site -specific pieces. The artists say that ‘Ephemeral’ is a project born out of

transient, artistic interventions that were executed during the solar year cycle. The goal is to give visibility to places that are symbolic on the island because of their ancestral and topographic importance. Photographer Vitorino has been experimenting with long exposure photography and light painting techniques for 12 years. The result is a sequence of images of iconic views of Ibiza shown on LCD screens with a twist and it’s worth a visit if you’re in town. Until August 18. Sa Nostra Sala, CalleAragon 17, Ibiza Town. Open Monday to Friday 11-2pm and .68.30pm More info @ www.ephemeralexpo.com

Art: Bloop Festival Mural Ibiza Town

Claire B

Another mural has been painted in Ibiza Town as part of the Bloop International Proactive Art Festival, which returns to the island later in August, this year with the theme of ‘Changes’. Urban artist Ino has created a work on the consequences of climate change on the facade of the school of Sa Bodega on Carrer de País Basc. After the completion of the snake created by the artist Spaik in the Soto tunnel, this is the second mural in Ibiza Town, part of Bloop’s long-term urban redevelopment project, the OpenAir Gallery. These murals are designed to change the urban scene and give an aesthetic value to areas previously without apparent value.

So far, the gallery has more than 20 works by international artists spread across the island, most of them in San Antonio. The Bloop Festival will take place from August 23 to September 9 and we will report more when the programme is released, but they are planning exhibitions, interactive installations, workshops aimed at children, video mapping, painting, sculpture, design and virtual reality. Sport Jezza’s World of Sport Jeremy Parmenter

Hi there, Sports fans, another week, another footie season but more on that later. Let's start with yet another success for England as in

Cricket – The Root Of All Success! New skipper Joe Root got off to the best of all starts on Monday as his England team beat South Africa, yet again, in the final Test of their tour, this time at Old Trafford, Manchester, to take the Series 3-1, the first time since 1998 that the Three Lions had beaten the Proteas in a home Test Series. Superbly led by MoM Moeen Ali, with a quickfire 75 in the second innings and a 5for in SA's second innings, England ran out winners by 117 runs and proved that they are now a team to be reckoned with. As for the Series, Ali was deservedly named Man of the Series as he took 25 wickets including that incredible hat-trick at the Oval in the 3rd, in 4 Tests and added some much needed runs to bolster the England innings when needed. So, a superb start for Root's captaincy and as far as Tests go, they can now look forward to facing the West Indies later this month. As for the South Africans, not a good tour, considering England beat them in the Grand Slam of One Dayers, the T20's and now the Tests but, mark my words, they will regroup and will come back all the stronger.

Athletics – Double For Mo And Adios To Usain! At the World Championships, currently being held in London, great to see Sir Mo Farah back in action, taking yet another Gold in the 10,000 metres Final, the first leg of his planned Double with the 5,000m starting on Wednesday. Mind you, he had to work really hard for the title, as he was blatantly targeted by a number of African runners, whatever their country, as they appeared to gang up on him to prevent his win. Now Mo may appear to be a very “nice” man off the track, but he can sure as hell look after himself on it, and went on to win, even tho' he ended up with a mass of cuts, bruises and stitches to prove to one and all that he really is an athlete not to be trifled with. Moving on to Usain Bolt and the 100 metre Final, what an absolute shame he ended his magnificent career coming in 3rd when most fans were hoping for a final Gold to add to his already bulging collection. However, wasn't to be as the race was won by Yank Gatlin, much to the consternation of the majority of athletics fans, as this so-called athlete is the biggest drug cheat of them all, having been banned twice and serving a total of 5 years away from the track. So, tell me, dear reader, do you agree with me that a second ban for taking drugs/stimulants should be for life? One misdemeanour I can accept, but two? Anyway, as the Bolt runs off in to the sunset, what a career with 20+ Golds and countless world and Olympic titles, surely one of the best, if not the best athletes of all time, right up there with Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson. We will miss you, Usain!

Golf – Mcilroy On The Way Back? After a pretty dismal recent run, at least against his high standards, Rory Mac could be on his way back as he came in tied 5th in the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in the States over the weekend, with an overall 7 under score with all 4 rounds under 70, a much better performance from the World No 4. However, that 7 under was still nine holes more than eventual winner Japan's Hideki Matsuyama who came in

Budapest Grand Prix Vettel Wins Despite Steering Problem Hamilton ‘Gives Back’ Podium To Bottas All made a good start though Hamilton lost places to the flying Red Bulls. That changed with Verstappen making a reckless move to reclaim fourth position from his team mate at turn two. He locked a wheel and inflicted terminal damage on his teammate Ricciardo’s car. Verstappen received a 10s stop-go penalty for the move, but at least had the sense to admit responsibility afterwards

England skipper Joe Root. with a stunning 9 under final round of 61 to win by 5 shots from the USA's Zach Johnson. Great to see “veteran” Brit Paul Casey up there too, as he tied with McIlroy and fellow Brit Russell Knox to give a British feel to 5th place! Looking good for all three then for Thursday's final Major of the year, the USA PGA Championship at Quail Hollow but look out for the USA's Jordan Spieth, recent winner of the Open, as he's looking to become the youngest holder of all 4 Majors.

Football – Yes, It's Back! Yes, unfortunately for many, but fortunately for more, the old game's back in the limelight as the new season got under way at the w/end, starting off with the Championship, which, to be honest, is going to be incredibly hard to get out of and in to the Premier as there are so many strong clubs in the league. Everybody's bet for promotion Middlesbro' got off to a poor start losing 1-0 at Wolves, Villa, with JT making his Championship bow, drew 1-1 with Hull, Our Ed's Ipswich got off to the best start possible with a 1-0 win at home to Birmingham and he must have been pleased to see Norwich could only draw 1-1 at Fulham (so already 2 points clear of his arch rivals!) but team of the w/end must be Bristol City, who narrowly escaped relegation last season, as they won 31 at Barnsley. Still, long way to go yet. Premier League Champions Chelsea were let down by their penalty takers, including 'keeper Courtois and new signing Morata, as, having drawn 1-1 after 90 mins, they lost under the new penalty system called ABBA where team A has one, then team B has two, team A two and so on, to FA Cup winners Arsenal in the Charity Shield at Wembley to have Mnsr Wenger almost making a smile and Signor Conte pulling his hair out! The PL season starts on Friday, with the Gunners at comfort for Ricciardo. Ricciardo was left fuming, calling Verstappen "immature" and a "sore loser". Hamilton’s chances received a boost on lap 11 when Vettel’s lap times began to rise. Ferrari had discovered a problem with his steering before the race began and it was now beginning to affect his driving, particularly on the tracks demanding series of fast corners. Vettel’s problem was a setback but it was far from debilitating, although Ferrari had a choice to make – keep Raikkonen second to protect Vettel and his lead or let the Finn through? In the end Vettel stayed ahead because Raikkonen was brought in to the pits immediately after him. Vettel stayed ahead throughout the race and took the victory, with Raikkonen P2. Once the drivers had completed their pit stops, Hamilton had regained his fourth position and was rapidly closing on his team mate. He had wanted to extend his first stint but was unable to tell his team due to radio problems. His pace remained strong after changing to the softs and now he was bearing down on Bottas. To his relief, Mercedes solved their radio trouble and Hamilton was able to urge them to swap positions between their cars. Mercedes allowed him through on the condition that he would give Bottas his position back. Hamilton quickly got after the Ferraris,

home to Leicester but before all that, Jose's new look Man Utd team take on Real Madrid in the European SuperCup, being the Champions League winners v. the Europa League winners so could be an interesting clash, especially with the latest tabloid rumours that Ronaldo could be on his way back to OT. Hmmmm, I don't think so but then stranger things have happened! Finally, commiserations to England's 3 Lionesses as, despite all the hype, they were taken apart, 3-0, in their Semi with eventual winners and hosts Holland in the Women's Euro 2017 championship. Great try, ladies, but not quite good enough this time, as the Dutch went on to beat Denmark 4-2 in the Final but there's always next time! Talking of the fairer sex, in

Rugby – England Going For Gold, Again! After the cricket and football, it's now England's Ladies turn to take the limelight as their World Cup campaign starts on Wednesday with the first of their group matches, against Spain in Dublin, followed by the US and Italy, so good luck to the Red Roses, current World Cup holders after their win in the Final against Canada in 2013. That's it for this week, until next…Jezza

taking up to seven-tenths of a second out of them per lap. But once he got a second away from Raikkonen his progress slowed to almost nothing. Even when he got within DRS range of the Ferrari the Mercedes never threatened a pass. Raikkonen often had the benefit of DRS from his team mate, keeping him safe on the short straights. Bottas had been told to stay close to his team mate so Mercedes could swap the positions back if needed. But he had slipped back quickly and was increasingly under threat from Verstappen. As the final lap began Hamilton was almost eight seconds ahead of Bottas, while Verstappen was almost within DRS range of the second Mercedes. Hamilton backed off his pace to a huge extent, taking over a minute and a half to complete his final lap, and let Bottas through into P3 at the final corner, taking P4 himself while keeping Verstappen tucked up behind in P5. McLaren enjoyed its best result of the season so far as Alonso finished P6, Sainz finished P7 for Tor Rosso, Force India are back on form with Perez and Ocon P8 and P9 respectively and Vandoorne’s McLaren took P10.

Fiestas

Fiesta Cala Llonga 2017 Figueretas Figueretas

Claire B

It’s fiesta time in Figueretas from August 11-15. There are lots of sporting activities and workshops for children during the day and concerts in the evenings. The fiesta culminates in a big firework display over the sea on August 15 at midnight. August 15 also marks the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into heaven, and signifies her passing into eternal life. All concerts take place on the seafront at La Plaça Julià Verdera and in the evenings there is a bar where drinks and snacks are available and along the promenade there are kiosks selling food and entertainment stalls. Posters with full details of the programme are on the tourist information kiosk in the Plaça and in local shops and bars. Fiesta highlights: Friday August 11: Ball Pages (folk dancing) at 20.15 and Karaoke at 21.30. Saturday August 12: Live music from Contra Band (Valencia) at 21.30 and Stone Corners (Ibiza) at 23.30.
