Geordie Shore In Ibiza

Following an official denial of permission to shoot their programme in Magaluf, the British reality show has arrived in Ibiza, though still without any public permits. San Antonio town hall has issued a statement conveying their “discomfort” of Geordie Shore recording in the municipality. They insist that no municipal licenses have been issued stating that “the image projected in such programmes does not correspond to the qualities that San Antonio wants to convey as a tourist destination”. There have been no reports of public recordings and the town hall have stated that they consider it “unfortunate that

some entrepreneurs have decided to allow these recordings to their own benefit and against the image of quality that the tourism sector in Ibiza wants to project”. Last year MTV pulled plans to record an Ibiza Shore derivative of the programme format which follows the escapades of a group of twenty-somethings, in light of a wave of public backlash opposing the plans.

San Juan Fiesta Claire B

June 24th is the fiesta of San Juan with celebrations in many places on the island in honour of John the Baptist or San Juan. It is widely celebrated all over the world and on mainland Spain, and Ibiza is no exception. Being the patron saint of the town of San Juan, the fiesta and celebrations there will continue over several days, but there are also celebrations in many other parts of the island. The focal point of the celebrations is the night of San Juan (La Noche de San Juan), starting in the evening of the 23rd with music and bonfires and/or fireworks at midnight to see in the 24th. As it occurs just a few days after the Summer Solstice (the longest day on June 21st), it is also used as a celebration of the start of the summer. Traditionally, and this still happens in some places, people jump over the bonfires, or run over hot coals, as a way of purifying the body and soul by fire. Others believe that you should

throw something old into the fire that represents something you no longer want in your life or a piece of paper where you write down the things you want to change. Some choose to purify themselves by bathing in the sea. It is also customary in Ibiza to eat San Juan macaroni, made with curly noodles cooked in milk, sugar, cinnamon and lemon rind. Other typical Ibizan products such as orelletes, wine or traditional spirits are also consumed in family homes. At the time of going to press, details of many of the fiestas on the island had not been released so look out for posters locally.

Figueretas

Monday 23º

Figueretas usually puts on a great show for San Juan on the seafront/beach. A DJ plays music from about 10pm, with a fireworks display at midnight (some of them launched from the Isla de las Ratas across the water from the beach), followed by the lighting of a bonfire on the beach afterwards. A bar sells drinks and food but most people watch the spectacle from the beach.

Talamanca Tuesday 24º

Wednesday 25o

Talamanca also usually has celebrations on the beach and in recent years buses were put on from Ibiza Town to shuttle people there and back. There’s also usually a party outside the Hotel Ses Figueres further along the beach. Look out locally for posters to find out what’s happening. The Week Ahead. Times are Spanish Local.

Restaurante Martina A flat calm laps, the beach almost silently under the gaze of a milky winter sun. The numerous mooring buoys out to sea are unoccupied, as most of the island’s boats are either under wraps or out of the water for the winter. The beach too is deserted and all of this meets with the approval of dozens of cormorants serving as an audience on the nearby rocky outcrop of an offshore islet. We’re sitting on the beach in front of the Restaurant Martina on the Cala Martina beach awaiting the imminent sunset – and life is good. Two old Ibicencos in flat caps row slowly past, having cleared the pile of accumulated seaweed from the front of their ancient boathouse. They disregard the option of an outboard motor, perhaps to better preserve the authentic tranquillity of this perfect Ibizan winter afternoon. Sparrows hop around expectantly in the sand at our feet beneath the table, occasionally brawling over the odd crust lobbed their way by the audience of diners. In the meantime wagtails studiously inspect the water’s edge, as if to prove their superior intelligence and decorum. This is clearly a venue preferred by the birds for its laid back vibe… A waiter politely breaks into the moment and responds to our request for a menu with a memorised breakdown of today’s specials. This basically consists of a summary of the best of what the local fishermen delivered to this morning’s fish market. Today they have magnificent looking St. Peter fish, Roya and both Silver and Red Pagel. The name "St. Peter's fish" comes from the story in the Gospel of Matthew about the apostle Peter catching a fish that carried a coin in its mouth and it can be found in hieroglyphs dating back to 1500 BC. Having only a few small bones, it is relatively easy to prepare and is delicious when freshly fried. Roya, also known locally as Rotxa, is similar to red mul-

let and scorpion fish, but is renowned for the fullness of its flavour. The Pagel, also known as the Pandora, is similar to sea bream and has soft and delicate flesh. However, it doesn’t keep for long, which is why Restaurant Martina buys it in on a daily basis. They’ve been buying fish for the Chiringuito every day for some fifty years now, so you can rest assured that they’re at the front of the queue of local restaurants seeking the best fish at the market on any given day… All of this we discovered after the waiter returned with the menu, upon which we found all of these delicacies simply described as ‘Another Fresh Fish of the Day’. Quite understandable as a pre-printed menu can’t forecast what’s going to be the best choice at the fish market on any given day. However, the menu does feature Prawns, Squid, Mussels, Hake, Sole, Monkfish, Sardines, Grouper, Sea Bass and Gilt-head Bream so you’ll always be spoilt for choice, but if you want to try the day’s ‘specials’ you’ll have to check out the chilled display cabinet to the left of the bar. On the other hand, if you just don’t fancy fish whilst you’re sitting there with your toes in the sand soaking up the view, and often down to your T-shirt in the sun even in the winter, the menu offers a range of meaty options, pizzas, pastas, paellas, sandwiches or baguettes that constitute a meal in themselves, and so on. You can even have bacon and eggs (5€) if that’s what rocks your boat? However, the reason for the longevity of this place and its popularity has a lot to do with its location. Very often, when the rest of the island is wearing its hat of cloud,

this place always seems to bask in sunshine. It could be because there are no hills nearby to attract and accumulate clouds, or simply a gift from the gods. On one occasion we did witness a huge electrical storm out to sea from here and it was hugely entertaining, but generally their motto is true – “Sun all day long”… Restaurant Martina is one of the few remaining authentic Ibicenco chiringuitos on the island. It has no aspirations to become a ‘beach club’ and this is reflected in the prices. The opening hours haven’t changed much over the last fifty years either. They’re open for a morning coffee, while you read the paper for a couple of hours on the covered terrace if that’s all you fancy, and they won’t close until the sun goes down, or until the last of the regular locals decides to go home…

Spain offers joint Sovereignty over Gibraltar As reported in El Pais

Spain's foreign minister has revived the idea of sharing sovereignty over Gibraltar with Britain if Brexit happens, saying it would allow the Rock to maintain access to the European Union. Gibraltar is eyeing the upcoming June 23rd referendum

Above: The Cast of Geordie Shore in Ibiza, tweeted by The U.K. Sun. (Continued from page 1) Cox for Revolution in his final year alongside the final season of the Space nightclub in Playa Den Bossa. Cox was quoted in the Spanish daily newspapers today as being “undoubtedly one of the most respected figures in the island since the electronic clubs came to inundate most of the Pitiusas”. Though the changes at Space and Cox’s comments around his decision to quit have not been without controversy, he will certainly leave a legacy of huge benefit to Ibiza’s economy as one of the Island’s biggest names in the world of electronic dance music. We will get a review in the at night section, as soon as anyone has recovered enough to write one :-)

Orlando Observed at Ibiza Gay Pride Claire B

Ibiza Gay Pride was held from June 6-12, with a parade in Ibiza Town on Sunday June 12. It started just after 6pm in the port with a procession of floats, vehicles and participants from the island’s bars, clubs and organisations and made its way through the streets of the town to the Vara de Rey in a flurry of colour, outrageous outfits, feathers and balloons. The town’s residents came out and were joined by tourists to line the streets and support the event, creating a great atmosphere. After the terrible shooting incident in the gay nightclub in Orlando last weekend in which over 50 people lost their lives and many more were injured, holding Gay Pride is clearly just

on whether Britain should leave the EU with alarm. At stake is a thriving services-based economy that relies in large part on access to the EU's single market, and a sovereignty spat with Spain it believes threatens its only land access to the continent. José Manuel García -Margallo told Spanish radio that if Britons voted to leave the EU, "it is obvious that Gibraltar also leaves the European Union, and won't therefore have access to the single market". Margallo, who is a strident supporter of the Rock coming back under Spanish control centuries after it was ceded to Britain in 1713, said solutions would have to be found to "allow Gibraltar to have a link with the European Union." He raised the possibility of "shared sovereignty during an extended period of time," reviving a joint-sovereignty proposal etched out

between the two countries in 2001 and 2002. The proposal was binned after Gibraltarians rejected it en masse in a November 2002 referendum. Gibraltar's leader Fabian Picardo has warned that Britain leaving the EU would be a "disaster" for the tiny territory. Earlier this year, he told The Local that he was concerned Gibraltar "might become prey to pragmatism and horse-trading" in the result of a Brexit. Picardo said he was also worried Spain may seize the opportunity to threaten the land border between the two - a longtime flashpoint in the sovereignty row between London and Madrid. Spain's dictator Francisco Franco went as far as closing the crossing in 1969, all but stranding inhabitants who had to rely on air and boat links until it was fully reopened in 1985. Relations have ebbed and flowed since, but the past four years have seen tension resurface under Spain's acting conservative government. Apart from sovereignty claims, the ruling Popular Party also bristles at tobacco smuggling across the border and accuses Gibraltar of being a corporate tax haven. In one particularly belligerent row over disputed waters, Spanish authorities upped border checks in 2013, creating hours-long logjams and forcing the European Commission to wade in and ease the crisis.

as important today as it always was. After the parade people congregated at the stage in the Vara de Rey where Spanish pop diva Marta Sanchez read the event’s manifesto and a minute’s silence was observed for the victims of the Orlando shootings. The celebrations then continued in the Recinta Ferial with live performances, DJs and fashion shows. It’s somewhat a shame that they didn’t keep the celebrations going in the port which they did last year, as it made the event much more visible and far more people supported and enjoyed it over the course of the night. But hopefully it will continue to be an annual event in Ibiza as it brings much life and colour to the town during the time it is on.

they did not move far simply making a makeshift camp behind the building. Talking to the neighbours in the area it seems one is an American and the other from Ecuador, together with three dogs. On the night of the fire two dogs were found with burns and one still attached to it’s chain that was hot to the touch by the Repsol petrol station in Santa Eulalia. Luckily for them a local lady took care of them and one of our animal care centres Can Dog took over their care. Easy assumptions were made of maltreatment of the dogs on facebook that night but after investigation locals told me that the dogs were always well cared for which was confirmed by the fact that the dogs were electronically tagged and returned to the registered owner later that week recovering from their injuries. Also fast assumptions of negligence on the part of the men who use that area to live may not be correct as one neighbour also informed me that local youths also frequented the area could possibly have been to blame. Although as usual in many of these cases the truth behind what actually caused the fire may never come to light. The issues that come from this event include the vigilance that we must all have towards fire safety especially in the summer when the possibility of forest fire is greatly increased. Also the social issue that in one of the most affluent parts of Spain there are still people who do not have the basic necessities of life. Do you have the insurance in place to deal with damage that can be caused by a fire that through no fault of your own affects your property but does not have a responsible party from which you could claim damages? Home owners are obligated to have home insurance but cover varies greatly, in the event of a fire costs incurred by the fire service may be sought after by the Consell De Eivissa. But this is based on each individual situation and circumstances. Many people who rent their properties in Ibiza may assume that they are covered on their landlord’s policy but this assumption may not be true and is worth checking.

Santa Eulalia Fire Reader Submission from Kevin Gall

A fire flared up in Santa Eulalia on Saturday night 4th of June at midnight visible from Siesta starting with a small glow building to flames flaring up into the night sky. Notably it was extinguished from start to finish in less than 30 minutes, bearing in mind there is only one fire station in the centre of Ibiza this is a prime example of the professionalism of the fire fighters that protect us here in Ibiza. The fire started directly behind the newly renovated building that houses the Club De La Moto Classica D’Eivissa I Formentera on Carrer Des Frigolars and also backing onto the Carritas building. The area that caught fire was full of flammable refuse and a large pine tree. Thankfully the motor cycle club escaped with no damage but Caritas was not so lucky with their rear storage area sustaining substantial damage, this could easily have spread to the entire building if left unchecked. The area although derelict was not unoccupied. Residents include two men who previously used the motorcycle clubs building before its renovation. Finding themselves displaced

News Riot Police clearing demonstrators opposing the new motorway construction from land in San Jordi

Court Confirms 7.8 Million€ More To Be Paid For Airport Motorway The hall of administrative litigation of the Supreme Court has confirmed the sentence that forces the Balearic Government to pay 7.8million euros to the contractors, Ibiza Access S.A., for extra costs arising from the construction of the motorway as a result of public protests. The project had considerable opposition among island residents resulting in the use of riot police to forcibly evict those who would not surrender their land to the developers. Among costs listed by the contractors, were the costs of private security used in handling altercations with members of the campaign group Platform Anti Autopista, also the transfer of the concrete and asphalt plant which had been installed next to the school in San Jordi but was moved after strong social pressure.

In his post, the user refers to a specific building in Santa Eulària that, in his opinion, exceeds planning regulations and directly accusing the mayor of accepting a bribe to allow the construction. Now, the defendant has a summons before the Justice of the Peace of Santa Eulària, to "present the documentation it deems necessary to support its manifestations.” In this context the council says it is “not exactly a lawsuit, but a request for retraction and apology". They go on to say that if not forthcoming it will result in the legal action that, if successful in gaining compensation for the mayor, would be donated to the Juvenile Reception Centre of Santa Eulària.

One Fatality In Window Cleaning Tragedy One worker died and another was seriously injured in an accident at the hard rock hotel in Playa den Bossa, as confirmed in a statement issued by 061, the emergency service. The workers were cleaning windows of the tower when they plunged from the seventh floor elevation. Doctors available at the hotel acted immediately, however one of the two men both said to be aged around 40 years, died at the scene. Hard Rock owners, Fiesta hotels, issued a statement in which they stated their deep regret. They have sent condolences of the deceased and extended “support and affection” to both families.

Watch What You Say - Santa Eulalia Mayor To Sue Facebook User For Slur The Mayor of Santa Eulària, Vicent Marí, has initiated proceedings to sue a person who accused him of accepting bribery on Facebook. The mayor is demanding 3,000€ in compensation. Santa Eulària Town Hall have confirmed that the mayor is taking action against an island resident who posted the accusations on social media. The unnamed person is said to have used the term “pasta bajo mano”, translated as pasta underhand, pasta being Spanish slang for cash. The administration said the person had accused the mayor of "accepting envelopes stuffed with cash to smooth the passage of projects, which if it were true would constitute a crime and should be reported to Justice". However they do not feel the challenge will be taken up continuing to say “it is not true, it is a completely fictitious assertion, without evidence, that damages the honour of the mayor.”

The Guardia Civil have established a crime scene investigation at the hotel. In a later development, questions have been raised as to the identity of one of the two workers who is understood to have been a last minute replacement for the regular employee. The authorities are investigating his qualification to undertake window cleaning abseiling work and the hiring contractors used by, but not part of the Fiesta Group.

British Tourist Remains In Coma In ICU A young British tourist believed to be aged around 20 years, remains in a coma in the intensive care unit of can misses hospital after what medical services described as heatstroke and cardiac arrest caused by the use of “toxic substances”. It is understood that the tourist was in a bar on the lower bay road in Cala de Bou Monday when, under the influence of alcohol and possibly drugs, he caused damage at a dive centre before being spotted by a Guardia Civil patrol who immobilised him and called an ambulance. According to reports, the man was struggling and screaming to such an extent that medical staff had to request reinforcements before taking him to San Antonio health centre where he went into cardiac arrest. In addition to the complications caused by his cardiac arrest, he was also found to be suffering from hyperthermia because his body temperature reached 41.5 degrees. His situation was described on Wednesday as serious.

Cala Salada Unrest Following the report of Can Germa resident Les Morris in last week’s edition, the Diario de Ibiza have picked up on the dissatisfaction of local residents with regards to the parking restrictions in force at Cala Salada. Following imposition of the greatly restricted access to the beach, local residents have been plagued with cars parked further along the road outside of the restricted zone. This has now resulted in the Can Germa and Cala Salada residents association requesting a meeting with the mayor to convey their grievances. At the meeting which is due to take place on Tuesday, the association has said it is willing to work with the town hall to seek alternative solutions. The complaints of the association are very much in line with those expressed by Les, in that the fly parking is making access to residential properties impossible and has the risk of restricting access for emergency services – which is ironically one of the main reasons stated for imposing the new regulations. In a follow up email this week Les told us that “two "no parking" signs have been installed in the section to either side of the junction with C/Ero( C/Mitjorn). There are currently 12 cars parked between them, there is no room for any more”. It seems that this is an issue of great interest and concern to people across the island, the first report we carried outlining the regulations has gained the highest level of online views for the month of May and June to date. This is in likelihood due to the Cala Salada scheme being presented as a pilot, which if successful would be rolled out to many other beaches on Ibiza that suffer from similar traffic chaos during the summer season.

tear her amazed eyes away from them to look at the camera for a photo and, once the power of speech returned to her, told everyone she saw that 'there were weal mermaids in the pool! They did talk to me! They had blue tails and were swimming like this' (cue mermaid swimming impression). For that alone, I'd have given the event a 10/10, but there was so much more in store. On stage first was Debbie, a singer from the Netherlands, who performed disco covers and original songs with confidence and style as two very pretty dancers struck poses behind her and mermaids splashed about in front. After Debbie, came new local girl band Electric Dreams who I reviewed last week. The headline act of the evening was Shane Ritchie Jr, the son of Shane Ritchie and Colleen Nolan who, I'll be honest, I knew very little about, other than his parentage - something he jokes about on stage. I was pleasantly surprised when he sang a huge range of songs in a strong soulful voice and got really got the crowd going. His voice is great, and he rattled off Sinatra, Olly Murs, Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars and more with confident ease, but it's his stage presence and camaraderie with the crowd which make him really worth watching. My two year old had been excitedly babbling about 'seeing weal mermaids' the whole way there and was rendered mute when they swam over to talk to her. No mean feat if you know my chatterbox of a kid! Community Thursday 16th June to Wednesday 22nd June 2016 ARIES - Page of Wands You need to listen to what a younger member of your family is saying, either verbally or nonverbally. Pay attention to the signals they’ve been sending out; they may be going through a sensitive time and do need your encouragement. For others, news of a new business opportunity or a new career option will make you excited to begin immediately TAURUS - Judgement This card brings opportunities for liberation this week. What has held you back dissolves and you finally become free of an unsuitable situation. You've had to respond dutifully to those who've cracked the whip in recent months so plan your exit strategy with care. You might as well say what you think too. Your Phoenix is rising from the ashes! GEMINI - Knight of Pentacles Younger members of the family or those in your care need help and inspiration. They have a message from the school of life that more is expected of you so don't be tempted to shirk responsibilities; or if you mentor try to be patient with your students’ progress. Those of you waiting for financial gains, expect good news soon! CANCER - Eight of Cups You're feeling a tad introverted this week; not sure of what you want, but on a mission to find out. A change of lifestyle maybe a good idea and you're thinking of ways to implement a new routine. You need some time alone to work this out. Look positively at your situation for positive changes to occur. LEO - Six of Cups Nostalgia for the past; fond trips down memory lane and what might have been etc., etc. Delving back into your past may seem like a good idea, but in reality would you change anything? The past is history. Just remember the lessons that were learnt so use this knowledge wisely. For some, there’s a reunion with a past love. VIRGO - Page of Pentacles 'What shall I do next?' could be the uppermost question going through your mind. This isn't the time for making concrete plans; however there's no harm in discussing your future with close friends or family and getting some useful feedback. It looks like you might have one or two options, which is why you might be wise to wait. LIBRA - Three of Wands If you've been giving your all to others, now’s the time to think of yourself; don't delay if exciting new opportunities knock on your door. Widen your horizons as it may well be the case of the grass being greener elsewhere. Creative Libra's can now get to grips with nourishing a pet project or idea that’s been left languishing lately. SCORPIO - Ace of Wands If you’re job hunting or looking to start a business of your own this is a great week to get the ball rolling. Some of you could even be headhunted because others have long deduced that you know your stuff. New beginnings are signified by this card, so there may be other areas of your life that require a shakeup. SAGITTARIUS - Five of Swords It's horrible to discover that there are people in life who are jealous of your achievements and want to knock you back somehow. This week you may be surprised or hurt by a friend’s sour behaviour. Try to keep the peace, however maybe it’s time to keep your distance as much as you can and cultivate more upbeat friends. CAPRICORN - King of Pentacles Try a touch of detachment when it comes to making important decisions this week. Allowing emotions to dominate will only cloud your judgement. Don't budge if you're haggling with someone over a deal or investment. Playing tough gets you what you want. Fellow Capricorn or Earth sign men; Taurus or Virgo prove insightful and helpful to you achieving your goals. AQUARIUS - Four of Pentacles You’re laying the foundations of a bright financial future this week; that could provide more than one steam of revenue. Pay attention to the details when finalising anything where money changes hands, make sure all's fair and square. ‘Money's round to go around’, as the saying goes; spend wisely on anything that's considered an investment, and that includes on you! PISCES - The Lovers Originally, this card wasn't about love but decision making; especially the right one as it can be life altering. The couple depicted on this card are Adam and Eve and look what happened when picked that apple off the tree! How this affects love is whether those you're closest to agree to your decisions; only time will tell.

John the Baptist may have been a member of the Qumran community. This community were the custodians and most likely the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The 1st Century biography of Jesus, St. Luke’s Gospel, in the collection of historical documents known as the Bible, says that John the Baptist sent a delegation to Jesus asking if he was the long awaited Messiah of Israel: “Are you the One who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” The reply that Jesus gives is remarkable and has many close links to a document in the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Gospel of Luke says that “Jesus had just then cured many people of diseases, plagues and evil spirits, and given sight to many who were blind. And Jesus answered them, ‘God and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them.’” (Luke chapter 7 from verse 18). Among the manuscripts found in the Dead Sea Scrolls is a document known as The Messianic Apocalypse or just 4Q521 (= manuscript 521 found in cave 4). Some notable scholars date the Hebrew script to the beginning of the 1st Century before Jesus (1st Century BCE). The manuscript is an outline of what the coming One, the Messiah, will do: “He who liberates the captives, restores sight to the blind, straightens the bent ....For he will heal the wounded, and revive the dead and bring good news to the poor.” The parallels between 4Q521 and the Gospel of Luke, is remarkable and, as always, the Gospel account is shown to be historically authentic. The mention in both documents of raising the dead followed by good news to the poor is astonishing. According to the Gospel of Luke Jesus had just brought back to life (from a so-called Near Death Experience?) the son of a window (Luke chapter 7 from verse 11).

It’s Good To Talk Kate Stillman

Dear Ibiza Sun I understand you are a counsellor and not a lawyer but me and my partner (not married) are in the process of separating, he is looking for somewhere else to live but is still at home at the moment. We have 2 children and I work but on nothing like the salary I was on before the children when we were in London. Do you have any idea what as a father and partner of 8 years he is required to provide for us? When we were together we had a good standard of living but now it seems like he wants to cut me off as much as he can. I really don’t want to go down the lawyer route but am beginning to feel like I have no choice. Yours truly, AR Dear AR I am sorry to hear about the breakdown of your relationship and yes you are right I am not a lawyer. Do you feel there is any chance you could be in the same room and have some sort of mediation? Often it takes time for the dust to settle and emotions to have time to breathe but ultimately being in a position where you can organise and agree on terms between you is not only going to save you money but also help you to start learning how to formulate your new relationship. However it ends up you share children so will have to have a relationship of some sort and this is the opportunity to begin to create a foundation to make it as peaceful, honest and supportive as possible. Having said all of that if you find that option impossible then it would seem sensible for you both to seek legal advice so you do know what is actually legally required of you both which will give you a starting point to work from. It is always so sad when once happy relationships turn sour and it seems as if you must have had some good times before now so maybe take the time to remind each other of those times in the hope that you can come to a resolution between you. All the best, Kate

ou only have to look at the bread crates full of ‘we can’t give them away’ books at the end of a fundraiser to know that the bookshelf is fast going the way of the record collection and its successor cd rack. Though I have resisted the digital age in maintaining my music collection, I must admit to being a big fan of my Kindle. So convenient, so simple, so good at what it does. So when gifted a copy of ‘The Power of Love’, a novel by Ibiza’s own author with letters Pamela Deakin M.B.E. it went up on to the bookshelf where it has remained. Until now unread. Its waiting time has been spent alongside neighbours of hugely diverse reputation. From tourist holiday reading discards where a snazzy cover has taken my eye despite the past lessons that this is often to mask the decidedly dodgy content within, to my own top however-many-there-are chart of classic literature, enjoyed to a level where owning the book is important whether or not I first read it electronically, through to the ‘my first big book of trains’ I can remember reading before I could read. I have to concede it took a techy problem with my much loved kindle to make me reach for Pam’s tome, but from the off I was glad I did. I have since learnt you can now get it on Kindle too—but quite nice in a nostalgic kind of way to be buried in a real book again. The tale starts with a prologue set in the Ibiza of the late 60’s. You are thrown straight into the action with a high speed race across the island. A Lotus élan is driven by a dapper chap of the age and accompanied by an equally iconic pretty young girl. Aside from the conjoined history lesson and the phallic analogies drawn from roaring engines and bursting speed, there seemed to my eye to be an element of evidential script in the account of the pan-Ibiza speed record

The Power of Love, Prologue.

Ibiza, Spain. 3.11 am. Tuesday July 20th 1967.

The growl of a powerful sports-car broke the black and silver silence of the hot still Mediterranean night. The gleaming vehicle streaked like a phantom down the long straight highway which stretched some ten miles from the east coast of the island to the west - a legacy from Roman invaders who had made Ibiza a strategic cross-roads in their vast empire. A pale crescent moon hovered low in the heavens, but a million stars, shimmering and glittering against the black velvet of the sky, radiated almost as much light as a full moon. The driver of the open car, a lean young man with thick blond hair and a neatly-trimmed beard, sat alert

these reckless ravers were set out to break. It reads as if the author might have even been there. But surely not? Upright and respectable Pam Deakin, a Member of the Empire no less. I decided to ask if my suspicions were true. Here is what Pam told me.

“Y

es I did write that scene from my own real memories. “My husband and I achieved the 6 minute transit and held the record in 1967. It was accomplished in a lotus élan, at times reaching speeds of 115 miles per hour. “We started at the point where the egg now is in San Antonio, already at very high speed as there was no roundabout or other impediment along the front at that time. “The good old roman road was practically dead straight then, no roundabouts, traffic lights etc., except for the notorious bend at San Rafael. “We finished at the entrance to Ibiza just a few yards before the Vara de Rey. The direct distance between the 2 towns was then just over 14 Kms. We did the drive at about 3 in the early hours of the morning. “There was no other traffic. We tried to break that record on another occasion but unfortunately had a blow-out on a rear tyre just after the bend at San Rafael. Fortunately fact did not follow the fiction of The Power of Love, but we all vowed never to make any further record attempts! “Of course it was a very different time. It sounds totally irresponsible now, you wouldn’t dream of trying some-

but confident at the wheel of the Lotus. Well-acquainted with this narrow road - one of the few asphalt highways on the island and the main link between the two island centres, Ibiza Town and San Antonio Abad - he knew the chances of meeting an oncoming vehicle at that early hour of the morning were a thousand to one against. But he kept a wary eye open for any farm-cart which might pull out from the numerous tracks at the side. Although imaginative and fearless in his driving, he hated to be unduly reckless. Exhilarated by the surge of the engine and the smooth response of the powerful car, he glanced at the girl at his side and smiled. Her sunstreaked hair streamed in the wind; her face glowed, her eyes gleamed with excitement. The magic of the night had obviously infected them both. Knowing their closeness of thought and mood, he felt sure she shared his own euphoria, relishing like him every new sensation - the radiant night-sky, the deserted road,

the rush of hot air and the thrill of speed, as intoxicating as a fine wine. The girl sensed his glance, placed her hand affectionately on his knee. She stared up again at the glittering night sky. Breath-taking, she thought, quite breathtaking! So many stars - so bright and clear, she could almost reach out and touch them. A sudden awesome feeling of splendid isolation enveloped her, as if the two of them were completely alone in the world, speeding towards some unknown destiny. She turned eagerly to the young man, shouted above the roar of the engine and the fierce rush of air. "Darling, there's not a soul about. Let's go for the six-minute record!" Ibiza's fast young set had already established a seven-minute record for the fifteen-kilometre stretch between the two town centres, but it was always open to challenge. He grinned back at her, his teeth reflecting luminous white in the darkness. "What about the timing?"

thing like that. “All the Ibiza events in the book are based on reality even if not all happening to me!

“A

nd there we have it. Deakin doing what Fleming forgot. A scene straight out of Bond, but on the one island 007 didn’t pose and procreate his way through. According to Google Maps the new road from the Egg in San An to Avinguda d’Ignasi Wallis (i.e just before the Vara de Rey as per the 60’s record)) in Ibiza Town is a distance of 15.1km and would be expected to take 17mins—almost 3 times the record set by Pam in the 60s. Now of course we do not advocate that anybody be so mad as to resurrect the record in an attempt to see is modern mastery of motor mechanics can offset the additional time that would now be taken up in negotiating roundabouts etc. Any such suggestion would be highly irresponsible. Besides, there is no need, just order a taxi in August and you’ll find out. Below we have printed the prologue from Pam’s book ‘The Power of Love’. If it whets your appetite you can order online via Amazon, or better still at the following local stockists.

"I´ve already set my stopwatch at the starting point - it's become a habit!" She gave him a mischievous sidelong glance. His foot was already to the floor, but the car, seeming to find some extra source of energy from their youthful excitement or the sparkling night air, sped at well over a hundred miles an hour down the gleaming stretch of road. "Don't forget the bend at San Rafael!" yelled the girl, referring to the only curve on the otherwise straight highway. "Don't worry, I know exactly the speed I can take that one." The car flashed on, slowed marginally as it approached the sharp bend. Nearly round, the driver put his foot to the floor again, accelerating smoothly out of the turn. A sharp explosive crack resounded like rifle-shot through the still night air, swiftly followed by a fierce hiss. The car slewed wildly across the road. White-faced but deadly calm, the young man fought

to regain control. "A front-wheel blow-out!" he yelled to the girl. "Hold tight!" He tried frantically to rectify the steering - breaking hard would only aggravate the skid. The car continued to lunge to the left. Despite the heat of the night, he felt suddenly ice-cold. His stomach churned wildly. The girl sat still as a statue, completely mesmerised by the speed of events, too terrified to utter a sound. Her sun-tanned face blanched with fear. The car careered wildly down the road, bounced along a dry-stone wall. The slim dark shadow of a telegraph pole loomed suddenly in front of the bonnet. The girl managed a fierce squeeze of her companion's hand before everything went black. Her scream pierced even the harsh strident sound of shattering metal and breaking glass. Its ghastly echo continued to reverberate through the still, star-lit Ibiza night. Then... silence once again.

Shoes for DJs (& those who like snazzy shoes)

I have discovered the most amazing shoes – especially designed for DJ’s. I spoke to their no.1 designer Vadim, about how it all happened. It all began at Amsterdam Dance Event last autumn. I was there on the conference with my label as Label Manager and DJ and met my colleague Nice Spinosa, who is former EMI manager and now runs his indie music company. Of course we met to discuss music business and opportunities, but he was wearing one of these shoes and i could not pass by. I really liked them and asked him where did he got the shoes, and he told me that he actually tries to sell them now. His artists Clau-

dio Coveri and Giordano Donati, known as duo Coveri & Donati, live in Rimini region in Italy, which is well known for famous Italian shoes, their friend is a shoemaker, so they suggested him to produce the shoes made of different colourful patterns, and all together they tried to sell them. By that moment they just started. I felt in love with the shoes and after our meeting i could not get them out of my head and kept on thinking what could we do to cooperate on the sales. Later the same year i mentioned about it to my cousin in Belgium, he did not seemed to be as excited as i am, but in few moths he shared the pictures with his friend who also considered it a good idea to work with and pushed the whole project in fact. We've discussed it and decided to go to Italy to find out what can we do. In the beginning of this year we took a plane and met the Italian part of our team in Novafeltria, where the factory is based. After our conversation we suggested to launch a website where consumers would be able to customize their own shoes. I should notice at this point that all the shoes except several patterns are made of genuine Italian leather and made by hands on this factory, so this is literally personalized shoes. By that moment guys already had such a website but it was only in Italian and was not promoted anyhow. So we decided to start with pushing it to the next level. That's how lacci.shoes was launched in May. In fact we are very young for now but we all strongly believe in our project. There is a long way ahead and we already have a lot of plans, like showrooms, retail, website upgrade and etc. Hopefully someday one of the stores will appear in Ibiza. These shoes have some positive vibe i think, just like the

Canada GP

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton won the Canadian Grand Prix after a tense strategic battle with Sebastian Vettel's revived Ferrari. Vettel looked in control of the race after vaulting into the lead from third on the grid with a blistering start. But Ferrari surrendered the lead by pit-

ting during a caution period, and Hamilton doing one pit stop to Vettel's two - controlled the race. He cut his title deficit to Nico Rosberg, who was fifth, to nine points.

Vettel took the lead with one of the best getaways for years - the Ferrari catapulted past both Mercedes within the space of about 100 me-

Page 15

tres and was well clear by the time they reached Turn One, despite the short run. Behind him, the Mercedes were side by side going into the corner, with Hamilton on the inside. They touched slightly on the exit and Rosberg was forced to take to the grass, but this appeared merely a function of their narrowing trajectories rather than an especially aggressive defence from Hamilton, of the sort that angered Rosberg at times last year. But Rosberg was clearly aggrieved, saying afterwards: "Sebastian had a great start, I had a decent one, Lewis had slow one. In Spain I went for the outside and made it work. Here, I went for the outside again and he did a real hard racing manoeuvre and I was off. I was pissed off at the time but that's racing." Vettel tried to build a lead in the early laps, but Hamilton was able to hold him easily, staying just over a second behind. Nevertheless, Vettel was still in control of a race that was expected to need

one pit stop if teams could make that work. But Ferrari surrendered that control when the virtual safety car was deployed while track workers recovered Jenson Button's McLaren, which suffered an engine failure on lap 10. They chose to stop both Vettel and Raikkonen, putting them both on the same two-stop strategy and forcing the German to pass Hamilton again to win the race. The decision - which Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene admitted later was "wrong" - put the two drivers on off-set strategies. Hamilton ran until lap 24, preventing Vettel getting any closer than about six seconds, before making his single stop, swapping his ultra-soft tyres for softs. The world champion came out 13.5 seconds behind the Ferrari, which has been improved by a new turbocharger design. Measuring his pace to ensure he did not over-use his tyres, Hamilton closed the gap to just under 10 seconds before Vettel made his final stop on lap

with a famous 26-20 win in South Africa, but condolences to Wales as they lost out to New Zealand 39-21, a score that didn't really do justice to the Welsh effort. Still, 2 wins out of 3 for the Northern Hemisphere over the self-called better Southern Hemisphere cannot be bad!

Cycling

Congrats too to Brit Chris Froome who won his 3rd Criterium du Dauphine title, finishing 12 seconds ahead of Bardet, and a good omen for both him and British road cycling as he won this title in 2013 and 2015, just before going on to win the Tour de France! Deja vu, maybe!

Cricket

and a Series win for Captain Cook's England boys as, having won the first two Tests against Sri Lanka, the final Test petered out in to a draw earlier today, due to London's fickle weather. Could have been interesting on the final day tho' as England needed 10 wickets to win and Sri Lanka needed 317 in their second innings to win. So, in the end, a 2-0 Series win to start off England's summer and Pakistan to come next, can't be bad!

37. The Ferrari came back out on to the track just 7.8 seconds behind but try as he might Vettel could not close in. Hamilton let him close to 4.5 seconds on lap 54, with 16 to go, before gently extending his lead again, emphasising how he had been managing his pace. He celebrated over the radio on his slowing down lap by saying: "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee," in memory of the late Muhammad Ali, and then did an 'Ali shuffle' in parc ferme. Hamilton's team-mate Rosberg got the worse of a battle with Hamilton into the first corner after Vettel's stunning getaway and

slipped down to ninth on the first lap. He was back up to fourth when forced to stop for a third set of tyres with 19 laps to go after picking up a slow puncture. The stop dropped the German to seventh, but on his fresher tyres he was able to pass Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen to slightly reduce the damage to his title hopes. Rosberg tried to pass Red Bull's Max Verstappen in the closing laps, but could not manage it, hampered by being low on fuel. He spun with one desperate attempt at the start of the final lap, from which he recovered without losing a place.

Jezza’s Eurobureau ... needed a last minute winner from West Ham's Payet to win 2Judging by the response I received last week after our publication of our 4 page Euro 2016 pullout section in last week's edition, it went down a treat so hope you are all filling it out as we go through the Championships. Of course it isn’t only football going on and inside you can read my full sports report. I just wish that all the headlines had been about the stunning football that's been played so far (which, unfortunately, it hasn't as yet!) rather than dismal headlines featuring our wonderful travelling England fans and their run-ins with the Russian fans in Marseilles, altho' to be fair, according to most of the media reports, and the investigating French magistrate, the Russians were the perpetrators, especially after the England/Russia match. However, that still doesn't excuse the violence and viciousness that occurred in the days leading up to the match. Let's hope that these scenes are not repeated because, according to UEFA if they are, England are out, as well as Russia. I know this plea will probably fall on deaf ears, but, c'mon guys, see sense, cut out the crap and get on with supporting your own teams in a normal, adult fashion. As for the actual football, nothing spectacular as yet with a glut of 1-0 wins, a few score draws and so far, no scoreless draws but nothing really of note to grab the headlines. Still, early days yet, methinks!

Group A

got off to an exciting start as hosts and favourites France

their act together before they play Wales Thursday in Lens otherwise 'tis going to be Les Rosbifs!”

Group B

Group C

and Wales are top after their great 2-1 win over Slovakia, with a Bale opener and a Robson-Kanu 81st minute winner (good Welsh name that!) but despair for England as, altho' appearing to dominate in their match with Russia, and after taking a 1-0 lead thru' a stunning Dier free-kick, they did what England do so well and promptly relaxed and instead of going for a killer second goal and a 2-0 lead, sat back to defend and, as we all feared, conceded a last minute goal to end up 1 -1 and the loss of 2 points. Mind you, sorry to say it, but manager Hodgson must take the blame here as he pulled off Sterling (OK so far) but replaced him with Milner, a defensive midfielder, almost saying “right, guys, we'll sit on our lead” and then his master stroke, replacing Captain Rooney who had played well until then, with Wilshere, a player who has played less than one match in the Premier League all season and, in my opinion, shouldn't even be in France at all! And what in God's name is an out-and-out striker, Kane, doing taking corners when he should be in the box getting on the end of 'em! For God's sake man, get your head out of the sand, and be bold, not meek and defensive as we England fans would rather see our team go down all guns blazing than retreat in to ourselves, yes? Wales' Bale and Coleman must be rubbing their hands with glee having seen that last 20 minute performance but let's hope Rooney's boys can get

Germany did what Germany do! A slick, professional 2-0 win in their opening match against Ukraine to top the group from Poland who dispatched Northern Ireland in a predictable 1-0 win to bring their 12 match unbeaten run to an end.

Group D

Croatia lead the group on alphabetical order after their 1-0 win over Turkey with their winner coming from a spectacular Modric strike while holders Spain, defending their double crown having won the title in 2008 and 2012, also got their campaign off to a winning start with a dominant but low scoring 1-0 win over the Czech Republic with a second half winner fashioned in Barcelona with Iniesta the supplier and Pique the header. Would have been a bigger win but for Petr Cech, Arsenal's 'keeper who made some world class saves.

Group E

I predicted that Belgium would do well due to their individuals but I also said that Italy would be up there too, so I looked forward to Monday's match between the two, which, on paper, looked to be the most exciting of the first group matches and so it turned out to be as Italy played like a team, whilst (Continued on page 15)
