Bare Cheeks a Bare Faced Cheek Bossa Brothels Outrage Residents 'Pornographic'. That is how the neighbours of Platja d'en Bossa define the brothel flyers that for the last ten days, they found every morning on the windshields of their cars. The leaflets have completely naked women in very explicit sexual positions and messages in which subtlety is not a key feature. Neighbours complain that the pamphlets are available to everyone, including children and do not understand how the municipalities of Sant Josep and Vila have not taken action against the clubs that are advertised. They say that in previous seasons they had also found cards and advertising strip clubs, girls offering sexual services or agencies escorts, but none of them had pictures or posts of this type. In fact, ten days ago the first of these flyers appeared, in which three young women offered all types of sexual services and the flyers have since proliferated advertising in this same tone several of these businesses. The cards appear on parked cars from the crossing between Avenue Pere Matutes Noguera with street MĂşsic

Vicent Mayans Mari to the end of Platja d'en Bossa, near the tower des Carregador. Both the City of Ibiza as Sant Josep explained yesterday that their local police have detected these flyers and are trying to locate people that put them on the windshields of cars during the morning. At first, the Consistory of Sant Josep noted that in the case of pornography, it was the responsibility of the Guardia Civil to arrest or fine those responsible. However, the provincial Force Headquarters indicated that the only thing they can do is bring the case to court if a neighbour complains because it is not a crime but a violation of a municipal ordinance. Later, however, the City stressed

that they can implement the ordinance and that their agents are trying to detect who distributes leaflets. The Ibiza Town Council agreed and said that when located, they apply the appropriate sanction, which will range between 150 and 3,000€

"Ed: Stating the obvious but to find those responsible has anybody thought to dial the telephone number on the flyer?

Cannibal Drug. Already called the drug testing market for Europe, Ibiza has seen over the last few weeks the reappearance of a drug called MDVP, which induces very violent behaviour and has even led those under its influence to biting other people in a Cannibal like fashion, hence the name.

www.theibizan.com

First detected three years ago on the island, the drug appeared not to be a hit at that time, but in the last few weeks there have been cases of violent dug intoxicated people, thought to have taken the Cannibal drug, causing havoc in the San Antonio Emergency Centre and Can Misses Hospital in Ibiza. So much so, that the staff have had special training to deal with these very aggressive patients and restrain them whilst they are being treated for the affects of this drug. The drug appears to be taking over from Calvin Klein (cocaine and ketamin mixed) as the fashion in areas of San Antonio and Ibiza, with one case also reported in Mallorca. It creates hallucinations and is a very dangerous, addictive and strong drug, often leaving the consumer in a Zombie like state, or unconscious, and with heart palpitations after first passing through a violent hyperactive phase. Often called bath salts on the drug market, the authorities are warning everyone to stay well clear of this drug and are trying to find who is supplying the drug on the island.

Tax Reforms Benefit Locals The income tax reforms, proposed last week by the national government, will benefit around 19,000 people living in Ibiza and Formentera. Aimed at helping low paid workers or families with lots of children as well as disabled people, the 10,000 residents in Ibiza and the 600 in Formenrtera, who officially earn less than 18,000€ a year, will see their income tax bill reduced by 31%. A family with two children jointly earning 25,000€ will receive nearly a 14% reduction in income tax. Special grants and allowances for disabled people, families with lots of children and working mums with children under three will be maintained whilst the new income tax deductions will still be applied to these situations. Other tax reduction help will be given to low income families struggling to pay their mortgage and the urban taxes charged by town halls. Civic Agents Start To Patrol. This week saw eight Civic Agents start patrolling San Antonio in the areas known as the West End, the sea front promenade, the fountain promenade,

the sun set strip and the north part of the area known as S’Era d´en Manyà. These agents will patrol in pairs and their job will be to improve the relationship between the residents of the town and the tourists by detecting uncivil behaviour, as well as health and safety problems, thus hopefully avoiding the police being involved. Trained in basic English, first aid and crowd control, as well as in constant contact with the emergency services, the Civic Agents are a pilot project for San Antonio that is copying a system already used in Catalunya. The actual police in the town are reportedly unhappy about this initiative claiming that they don't need more eyes to help detect problems but more man power to deal with them. Caught After Three Years. A 26 year old British man was detained in Manchester this week after jumping bail three years ago in Ibiza, when he was detained for drug offences along with several other suspects. The man was alleged to be part of a 13 strong gang caught in 2011 with possession of 5 kilos of MDMA, 4 kilos of Cocacine and

Can Misses Opens One hundred and sixteen patients attended the new hospital, built next to the Can Misses hospital in Ibiza town, on its first full day of operation this week. Initially offering the services of Endocrinology, Internal medicine, Neurology, Neuro-psychology, Chil-

dren’s medicine, Dermatology and Urology, fifty of the future nine hundred staff which will work at the hospital were on hand to help patients. Over the next few months all twenty two different consultation services will start to operate, reducing the need for

seven hundred patients to travel to Mallorca for treatment and check ups. The other positive spin off is that the waiting time for consultations will be drastically reduced as the new facilities come on line.

3,600 pills ready for sale as well as 69,900€ in cash. Extradition proceedings are now under way for trial in Ibiza.

Cyclist In Intensive Care. A 53 year old man was knocked off his cycle by a car near Sant Carles village. The injuries were severe, especially to the cyclist’s head and the he was taken to intensive care at the local hospital where he remained for more than 24 hours.

these excursions were not to enjoy the nature of the area, the Consell said that they wanted to keep the tourism on Formentera different from that on the other islands. They criticised that the Red Natura 2000 appeared to just check that the area where the landings were going to take place was not destroying an important natural habitat or endangered and protected plants or species, rather than verify what the excursionists were actually going to do once they reached these idyllic spots. Apparently, checking the company web sites shows that they are party excursions not nature excursions.

Luciano Party Disrupted. The Luciano and Friends Party at the Cova Santa Night Club, located in the country side in the borough of Sant Josep, was disrupted after police responded to complaints from neighbours about the noise. Reportedly, after receiving complaints at the beginning of June about the noise generated by the party and because the organisers had apparently previously refused to allow them to take sound metre readings, this week the police entered the club and sealed the music equipment as the party was taking place. It looks like the club now faces hefty fines and will have to have the sound equipment measured and metered by the Town Hall, as well as having a noise limiter installed before they can hold another event. Palm Tree Fall. A local man was injured badly when he fell 5 metres to the floor from a Palm tree he was pruning in Playa den Bossa. Initially treated at the scene by the emergency services, the man was later taken to an intensive care unit because of the seriousness of his injuries.

Injured In Police Escape Bid. A young couple were seriously injured when they tried to avoid being stopped on their motorcycle by the police in Ibiza Town. As the couple fled and a chase started, the 25 year old man lost control of the motorcycle and the 23 year old Italian girl passenger was thrown from the bike receiving the worst injuries. Excursions In Formentera. The Balearic Government's environmental sub committee Red Natura 2000 went against the wishes of Formentera’s Consell Island Government when approving two maritime excursions landing on Ses Illetes and Espalmador—both being protected areas of coast in Formentera. Claiming they were parties and nothing to do with enjoying the natural environment of this natural park, the Consell sent a representative to Palma to argue the case that these and other similar excursions should not be allowed to operate. Backed by reports from Natural Park rangers that

Snake Population Study. Snakes which arrived here from the mainland, possibly in vegetable and fruit shipments, or pets that escape are increasing in population. For the last two months, a study in which the difference between these snakes adapting to the new environment of the island and the rest of their species on the mainland has been taking place. Specially trained dogs were used to detect the main centres of snake activity on Ibiza and a top Snake Specialist, Juan Manuel Pleguezuelos, from the University of Granada, arrived on the island this week to check out at first hand the results of the study so far. The results of the study will also help control and understand how snakes are

Ibiza News arriving on the island. While Pleguezuelos was on the island, a motorist reported running over a big snake on the Sant Miquel road. Inspecting the incident, this expert explained that these snakes were not dangerous but were a threat to other local species and fauna, needing to be controlled as they were not natural inhabitants of Ibiza.

San Antonio, a 23 year old British youth was detained by police for drug dealing. At first, the man tried to run off as the police approached but when he was finally caught officers found he was in possession of forty six pills, three grams of cocaine and 1055€ in cash. The youth admitted to the police his modus operandi for selling drugs to tourists.

Taxi GPS. The Town Hall in Ibiza has signed a deal with the company Pitusred to provide a GPS service for taxis in the borough. This will replace the traditional radio taxi system of connecting taxis with customers. All taxis will now have to officially install the GPS system, even though in initial trials they were reportedly not too happy about the efficiency of the system with multiple taxis being sent to pick up the same ride.

Pensioner Drunk Driving. An 84 year old man was found to be drunk whilst driving in San Josep at 7am after he crashed his Volkswagen car into a Fiat Panda coming the other way driven by a 38 year old woman. The accident happened at the corner just after the petrol station in the village and blocked a lane of the road needing the police to assist in controlling the early morning traffic. Both vehicles were right offs and the drivers were hurt in the accident needing ambulances to take them to hospital for treatment.

Balearic Breakthrough in Alzheimer Battle The Univerity of the Balearic Isles (UIB) has brought us a small step forward in the battle against Alzheimer’s disease with their molecule HDHA. The group of Molecular and Cellular Biomedicine of the UIB has designed a molecule that allows mice to recover normal levels of lipids that are altered by this degenerative disease. The key point of this research group, led by Dr. Pablo Escribá and Xavier Busquets, is to design a molecule: the hidroxidocosahexaenoica acid (HDHA). Their initial hypothesis is that the neurological disorder that causes the neurodegenerative process associated

with Alzheimer's is related to altered levels of lipid in the neuron membrane. Escribá stresses that they are already conducting human trials to evaluate the effectiveness of this molecule in the treatment of this degenerative disease and so far the results are encouraging, with noticeable results after three to five weeks of treatment. The path between research and the disposal of a drug in pharmacies is very very long, and even if they are doing clinical trials Escribá indicates that it may be many years of waiting until their investigation becomes a drug available to the general market.

des Falcò area of the Ses Salinas natural park was reported by the GEN ecologist group to the authorities for staging a wedding celebration in an area of the natural park beside the club. It appears that the beach club set up a stage, lighting and other installations needed for the wedding without the correct permits in a protected area and the many cars bringing the guests caused problems by parking in the natural park. Sant Josep Town Hall claimed that they would take action against the organisers. Apparently, on the day of the wedding, once the authorities had checked that the permits were not in order, there were too many guests attending the event and police intervention at the last minute could have caused possible public safety issues. 241,000€ For Fishermen. 241,000€ in grants will be given to local fishermen to help compensate for the expenses they incur daily in controlling and registering catches and in helping manage local fish stocks. There will also be some money to help with the expense of employing more hands to help on board the fishing fleet. Call to ‘Be Civilised’. That is the message of a publicity campaign which is going to be set up in the UK by the Spanish national tourist authorities after certain excesses of the youth tourist market on the islands made head lines. Several reports of incidents of bad and uncivilised behaviour on Ibiza and Mallorca have made the news and there has been controversy in the last week over the British Consulate backed warning brochure about behaviour and the dangers faced in the resort of San Antonio by young Brits on holiday.

However, it appears that an international headline and a video going viral on the web of a young girl allegedly carrying out oral sex with twenty three men in a bar in Calvià, whilst on a binge drinking pub crawl, finally made the authorities take action and get this publicity campaign on the go. Warehouse Robberies. Between Sunday night and Monday morning, it seams that a very organised gang broke in and robbed the safe at a warehouse of an ice cream company located in the Ca Na Negreta industrial estate. There are no details of the loot obtained in this robbery but it appears that there are possible connections to three or more similar robberies which have occurred in recent days on an industrial estate located near the airport. Police Attacked By Moldavian Women. Local Police in the village of Sant Josep were physically attacked by three young Moldavian women when they asked them to leave a bar in the town. The police were responding to a call from the owner of the bar who reported that the women were intoxicated and were smashing glasses and plates as well as damaging the premises. Once the police managed to control the aggressive women they were taken into custody before being charged and handed over to the Guardia Civil. ONCE distributes 210,000€ in Sant Jordi The Friday ONCE Coupon left 210,000 euros in Ibiza, in seven coupons awarded with 20,000 euros each in the draw of El Cuponazo. The award was handed by the seller, Daniel Sepùlveda Gomez, whose selling area is the commercial area of Sant Jordi.

Mirav Tarkka Nick Gibbs If Carlsberg made female role models, Mirav, or to be correct Dr Mirav Tarkka-Boulton would be a very strong contender. Mirav is offering self defence classes in Ibiza alongside many other specialist security and combat training options available from ‘Defense Tactics’, the notfor-profit company she founded with husband who is currently employed in VIP close protection in Ibiza. They make quite a formidable couple. I have known Mirav only as a facebook contact for the last year or two. Though I am blind to requests to play candyfarmcoaster, Mirav’s posts are rather more attention grabbing. Her promotional photos for various of her courses include images of her with machine guns, grappling knife wielding attackers, kicking various men in the goolies and then one which must be the definition of fearlessness, Mirav biting Ibiza Rugby Club’s Ryan Harvey in the arm as he attempts an ill fated underwater assault. All of these images it should be noted come with Mirav’s slogan

‘strong is the new sexy’ and various, lets say minimalistic and close fitting outfits as I wouldn’t want to get on her wrong side, but on the other hand I am only human and she does look pretty darned hot. It is not all about physique however, Mirav has a dual doctorate in Psychology and Criminology— comforting I am sure for a bad guy to know that not only can she have him restrained and disarmed with consummate ease, she also knows what he is thinking and why he did it. I think it is a great idea for all of us in Ibiza to get some self defence training, particularly those walking home alone after late finishing jobs. I met Mirav for a coffee and she told me more about her background and her training. Mirav’s background is somewhat different to a typical girl growing up in the UK or Spain. She describes a life in troubled Israel that has included more than her fair share of pain and loss and the environment encourages the attitude of defend or die. Clearly she has embraced it more than most. Mirav has trained and taught what many experts consider the most lethal fighting system invented, Krav Maga. During her national service as an Operations Sergeant attached to a covert unit she was chosen to complete an intensive 4 week Krav Maga Instructors course. After earning this coveted KM instructor’s diploma her military duties included training soldiers in hand to hand combat. It is in this way Mirav can be such a fantastic role model to girls and example to all of us. She refuses to accept the role of a victim but instead to train yourself to be mentally and physically prepared to deal with whatever ag-

gression comes at you. During her own spell in the army she was kidnapped and has seen people around her suffer at the hands of the troubles. I am sure this experience is very important in the real life aspects of the training she delivers. For example, self defence course includes sessions on home invasion where you quite literally sit at home and await an attack, she has also arranged sessions in pubs, boats and aeroplane to deal with situations in as real life context as possible. If every woman and girl had the benefit of Mirav’s training I am sure there would be a lot less fear on the streets - and come to that a lot less domestic violence too. Mirav’s current regular training courses are held in San Antonio Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. People are welcome of all experience levels and can attend as often or as little as they wish. You can also pay for lessons individually but at only 50€ a month for 12 sessions, the regular price seems a bargain. Mirav is keen to hear from any other individuals or small groups who would like to set up particular training scenarios, times, locations etc. and I know there is a hope to establish a women’s self defence class in Cala de Bou - if interested contact my wife Rhian Gibbs on 609850765. See the back of Mirav’s card for her contact details. See the front of Mirav’s business card because it’s good to look at.

Ethnographic Museum Museums in Santa Eulalia

"Nicole Torres Museum of Can Planetes or d’es Molí de Dalt - River Interpretation Centre Next to the bed of the only river in Ibiza and the Balearic Islands, in the town of Santa Eulalia, is this interpretation centre, which aims to disseminate and show how the river and local residents lived there in the tenth century. In a typical pagés house, which you can visit for free, there is a running flour mill and you can also observe the typical crafts of the area. The river of Santa Eulalia and its environment led to a natural area in which people used the river for irrigation for many years. That's why the system of canals, orchards and mills are still an important part of the landscape of the river valley. In other parts of the house, there are two classrooms to ac-

commodate arranged courses or meetings and where there are information panels about the historical sites of the river’s environment and the different irrigation systems used. A model of the town is also on exposition. The Can Planetes’ classrooms also host screenings of educational films, as two short documentaries that deal with the history of the Santa Eulalia River and the Orchard that formed around throughout the centuries. Can Planetes is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 1pm, closed on Mondays and bank holidays. Museum of Ethnography In the Puig de Missa of Santa Eulalia des Riu there is Can Ros, an old country house designated as the local museum of ethnography. Adapting to the demands of space, there is a permanent exhibition, sometimes in a scenic way, if the room and pieces permit it, or by glass showcases and various exhibitors. This exhibition ranges from clothing and jewellery to many household objects used in farm houses, field and craft or specific task’s utensils, musical instruments, weapons, and personal items. This permanent exhibition is supplemented by temporary solo exhibitions, as well as conducted Workshops and Craft activities in which various traditional craftsmen show us the development of musical instruments, clothing, sandals, toys and objects made from plant fibres. When visiting Can Ros, you can ask to see any of the historical and ethnographic videos that make up the background. Their summer opening hours (until September 30th) are Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm and 5.30pm to 8pm, and Sundays from 11am to 1.30pm. The entrance is only 3€ and children get in for free. Trull De Ca N'andreu Museum This former farm of the seventeenth century and very near the center of Sant Carles, has been converted into a house museum and preserved for a hundred years. It is interesting to visit because it shows all the elements of traditional Ibizan architecture. The Trull (mill) dates from 1775 and is one of the few that remain on the island. It also exhibits farm tools, plows, millstones, equipment for wine making, tools for manufacturing footwear, musical instruments, weapons, and other typical utensils from the Pitiusan rural world. The farm belongs to Miquel Torres, who inherited it from his father and it has remained in the same family for generations. 90% of the exhibits were in this house and the rest have been presents from neighbouring houses. Open in the summer, coinciding with planned trips, but it can be

visited daily by particulars from 3.45pm to 4.45pm. Also on Saturday, from 11am to 2pm, and Tuesday and Thursday from 9.30pm to 10.30pm. You can call to make an appointment 971 335261. Entrance: 2 € Sala Barrau There used to be a Museum on the Puig de Missa in Santa Eulalia in honour of Catalan painter Laureano Barrau i Buñol, who died in Santa Eulalia in 1957. He first visited the island in 1912 and here he found a place for rest and inspiration, enchanted by the lights, the landscapes, the idiosyncrasies of the people and their customs. Finally settling in Santa Eulalia, he painted the landscapes and its people. Nowadays, Barrau’s paintings are in a room in the centre of the Passeig de S’Alamera in Santa Eulalia on permanent exposition.

Wok’s In The Box? Well you won’t find out Wok’s in the box if you can’t find them so first up some directions. For locals So Wok is just off the main drag of the West End—in the lane opposite the Highlander (prev Just Eat Restaurant), for those further afield and tourists it’s just a couple of minutes from San Antonio’s marina waterfront and Taxi Rank—just pop Carrer General Prim, 14, Sant Antoni, Ibiza into Google Maps and it will pop up before you’ve finished typing. So Wok comes with something of a San An seal of approval in it being the new business of Debbie Winch who many will know from the much loved family business of the same name. Actually new business is not really the case as brother Craig has a So Wok Noodle Bar back in their native, er, Teeside? Tyneside? You can’t get these things wrong with the Winchs, I’ll just play safe and say Sunderland. So you know where it is, you know who it is, time to get on with the most important what it is. But before we get on to the main affair let’s hold

back a minute and see what else is on offer. Cosmopolitan always seem to be saying it’s better to take it slowly and it’s probably time I gave their advice a try. If the Cosmo advice applies equally well we’ll be living in a happy household at chez Gibbs as Debbie’s appetisers are well worth a detour. Prawns in pastry—great, juicy and full of flavour, Beef Satay I could have eaten all night long, Crispy Ribs—gone, devoured them all in a very un-cosmo like hurry and compounded my husbandly failings in this being the one dish for sure I knew my ‘looking forward to coming until last minute emergency babysitting request’ wife would have wanted me to take back. Easy answer—get some more– problem I’d eaten those too before they got to her. A bad and wicked man but I blame the Winchs & their confounded deliciousness. Debbie told me some more about her healthy smoothies which are going down a storm especially with workers coming into town on shift, and the years behind the Winchs bar have did not go to waste

as Debbie has come up with some wicked cocktail combinations. I took a snap of the specials blackboard and all of these are a bit of me— sunset strip flavours but at a westend-tastic 6€ price. No wonder the bar is doing well in it’s on right. And now we do reach the main feature, the so wonderful so wok fresh to order noodle bar. 1. Choose your base I am told the Rice options are very popular but on this my first visit I felt it had to be Noodles and you’ve four to choose from—whatever you go for the base starts the dish at 3€ 2. Add your favourites. from 3.20€ for the duck and prawns down to just 1€ for water chestnuts, spring onions and plenty more options to tick the boxes of the cost/health conscious wokker. 3. Add toppings. Peanuts and/or fresh coriander for 60c— it’s a no brainer.

5

Page 6

4. Finally the sauce. Included free and I went with the majority having the most popular coconut curry— but I’ve got my eye on garlic and black Pepper next time—and there most certainly will be plenty of next times. It’s got the lot—fresh, as healthy as you want it, as cheap as you want it, fast, and most of all delicious—plus I don’t know why but I just love the square boxes. Of course the box is not exactly conducive to food photography and so just this once Debbie found a plate, so you can all see Wok’s in the Box!

One to One with Simon Raine

The Ibizan, Thursday 10th July 2014, Issue 742

"Nick Gibbs

Simon Raine, the man and the brain behind Gatecrasher and now of course Ibiza’s newest major league player in Clubland. I had only met him once before in one of those hollered conversations inside a club when you come away unsure if you’ve just agreed a deal to buy a donkey and cart in return for painting someone’s house, or participated in a meaningful conversation regarding the loss of the vocal diva in creating music that will stand the test of time. The reality for many of us from the generation where ear defenders were brutes in number 5 shirts asking for the ball is that a large part of such exchanges are based on a bluff and a smile. So what to expect. Here is a man who has opened a club in Ibiza, his first business in Ibiza, in a matter of just a few months. As far as I figured he’d likely fall into one of two types. Either a stressed out frazzle of a man with a pronounced tick anytime the word hacienda is mentioned (the Balearic government Hacienda not the Manchester Factory club you understand). Alternatively he could be a cold and calculating ruthless businessman who would never schedule a meeting for longer than 5 minutes and would suffer this interview forced on him by a PR manager for as long as I could maintain his knife-edge interest. Neither description is even close. What I did instead find was a surprisingly relaxed chap, engaging and interested with a clear desire to take in as much knowledge about Ibiza and the way it all ticks at every opportunity. A sound approach to what is a very different commercial environment to the UK. We started by talking about the Ibiza factor in getting established. SR: To be honest I was very lucky. Eden had done all the hard work so what I’m involved in is more about progression than setting up from new. The Eden guys there have been so helpful, I have to mention Michael Van De Kuit and Rinco

Soesman—they really have gone above and beyond to help us. Great guys—I have huge respect for them and what they have done with the club—what did you think of it?

"I

didn't have to consider resorting to a sycophantic symphony of platitudes in singing praise of his new project—the work at Eden is amazing—the lights, the space, the sound. A real coup—well it certainly took people by surprise anyway. By this time the Gatecrasher line-up was taking good shape. Still needing some tweaks as Simon put it to get the balance just right. You can see info on the full confirmed line up over the page. Of those already confirmed a Trance night or two, to be expected, Kisstory— great, a personal fave, but the one that had caught my eye from the list I’d been sent earlier in the week was Speakerbox. With Mistajam at the helm it is as eclectic a mix of styles and talents I’ve ever seen to be playing a single room event. Hip Hop, Grime, D&B, Dubstep, - OK most of it was outside of 4-4 house music but that’s about as much of a connection as they had—not house music. For me brilliant but you might expect a newly opening club to play safe in the early days. Speakerbox—bit of a curve ball, bit of a risk? SR: Yeah it is a bit of a curve ball. It’s not EDM, it’s not Trance It’s a little bit street, a bit Urban. It’s Eclectic.

"Jungle

too—it’s been a while since I’ve seen Jungle on a main room line up. SR: Who’s playing Jungle?

"Majestic.

SR: Yeah I don’t think he’ll be going all out on Jungle. Be a bit of Drum and Bass, bit of a mix up. I think it will work, but it will take a time to get it going. There are some great acts in there.

"The

opening was a sell out—you’ve got to be pleased with that. SR: We were really pleased— but we were nervous about it. Should we or shouldn’t we, should we wait till the season proper starts, but we wanted to

start with something special. The music was great we had three of our residents Mistajam, the boys from Crèche, a representation of the brands we are promoting. Really pleased with the turnout. Always good to see a queue forming, not so good if you’re standing in it but good tor us on the first fully open night. The Crash night started this week, not as busy as the Crèche night but still very encouraging. Great to see all the Trancers, great atmosphere.

"Do you still personally get

off on Trance—like after all these years? SR: You know what you get off on any night that’s full. When you’re in the nightclub business it’s always great when it’s busy whatever the music genre. You wouldn’t do the job otherwise, there are easier ways to make money. OK when you do well you can do very well, but you have to put the hours in to make it happen. It’s the same as most jobs though, whatever you do it’s usually better if it’s busy and successful, the buzz you get from that sees you through. It’s the industry I know and love so yeah I still get off on it. As far as Trance goes I still love Trance but Gatecrasher the brand moved on from being all about Trance many years ago. We’ve got the Gatecrasher club in Birmingham and that plays all styles of music—you’ll hear EDM, Hip-Hop, R&B, D&B.

"I hear you and I’m sure you

have to spend a lot of time in interviews overcoming the Trance association, but asking Simon Raine the individual not the Gatecrasher supremo, what do you enjoy, what do you listen to in the car? SR: In the car, right, ha ha, well you’ve kind of got me there, not so much in the car actually as I’m in and out of different cars all the time, but if I’m at home in my office and want to get down to some serious work I always end up putting some Trance on. It helps me focus. My missus will come in and ask how the hell I can work with it, but I can, I love it, it puts me into the

zone. So do I still love Trance, yeah I do, of course I do. You can’t be turning this into a Trance interview though.

"I

promise I won’t. I try to give Simon some reassurance on the grounds that it really does not do a thing for me— but at the same time it does seem to be having something of a Renaissance in Ibiza and you can’t meet the founder of Gatecrasher in interview and not want to ask his views on the scene. There are now Trance nights at Privilege with the Driftwood lads and their big following, they run the Trance boat parties too, Trance at Amnesia, Judgement nights, Trance nights at Gatecrasher, any reason for the resurgence? SR: Somebody said to me a little while ago that Trance is back, but did it ever really go away. For a time it just went a bit underground and a bit deeper, but you know Trance is Trance I think it will always have a following.

"Have you ever been to one of the Ibiza Psy-Trance forest parties? SR: Forest parties? No.

"Do you want to go to one?

SR: Yeah, definitely, ha ha, when is it?

"I’m

no expert but I have been to the legendary PsyTrance forest parties so I impart what information I have. It’s not relevant to this interview but I decided to note it down anyway for the general interest of any Trance types reading this—you can see it over the page. So our plan is hatched for a future excursion to the woods and I’m thinking I have started something here as our conversation continues along the trance train. SR: Trance has always had an underground following. Goa Trance, probably the best trance mix ever was Paul Oakenfield’s Goa Trance mix—which I think he rereleased again last year. It’s where it’s at for me. It still works for me but then house works for me too, and drum and bass, music is music, it’s all good. You can’t turn this into a Trance piece though..

"I’m

thinking we’ve been here before. OK let’s move on, how have the early ticket sales been going? SR: Ticket sales are varied, some nights better than others. The Island is a challenge. There’s deals on every corner and every corner has another corner with another deal. It’s only June though but it’s looking good, the island was busier in May than it has been for a long time, so it said in the paper anyway, it might have been your paper actually.

"Have

you got your head around the San An factor yet—something many businesses here struggle with is the idea that everywhere in San An is selling tickets to go to Bossa and elsewhere, taking the people away, but you won’t find people in Bossa promoting San An in the same way? Do you know from your sales channels what areas of the island your customers are coming from? SR: I think 50% of the island’s clubbers are based in San An. Whether they are going to Privilege, Ushuaia or anywhere else they are staying here in San An. That was evident as when those big clubs opened and San Antonio emptied. But that is mainly as nobody has been putting anything big on in San An with the exception of Pete Tong’s wonderland, Judgement Sundays back in the day. I’m not wanting to put anyone down by saying that, but I don’t think anyone has booked any really big acts or the sort of line up we’re putting together. So I hope we’ll be giving people a reason to stay in San Antonio. As long as the acts are big enough people will come from other parts of the island. San Antonio is changing and people will come here if they have reason to.

"Many

people feel Ocean Beach have been instrumental in improving the Image. SR: I think those guys have done an amazing job, really fantastic. They are pulling the (Continued on page 10)

numbers in, they are getting the spend, people are even dressing up which we haven't seen for a while. The shows are great, with the cranes and acrobats. Then you’ve got Pikes which is a legend in itself, obviously Ibiza

Rocks, the new harbour. San Antonio is looking up no doubt about it. And of course the sunset.

"Some

people/businesses see that as a double edge sword in that everybody does the sunset till around 10, then it’s nearly clubbing time so

www.theibizan.com they miss out on the pre-party business they would expect elsewhere. Sorry does that sound really negative, moaning about the sunset? SR: Well no, you know I hadn’t thought about it that way but now you’ve said it, yeah I can see that problem for some bars.

Psy-Trance Forrest Parties

Whether or not the music is your cup of tea, you simply cannot fail to be in awe of the technical and organisational feat undertaken in staging one of the Ibiza Psy-Trance forest parties. Unfortunately for me Psy-Trance is the musical equivalent of a cup of hot Bovril—I can remember a time in the dim and distant past when I did like it (or at least it’s warming properties during January away games, Bovril that is not Psy-Trance), but that time has long since passed. Despite this lack of musical empathy with those in the scene the events have an almost mythical status and so have still been keen to taken up invites to experience the experience. Our first and biggest forest party went a little something like this … Having been sworn to secrecy we met in a Car Park miles from anywhere (by which I mean the North of the Island), and having confirmed that the morse-code-esque flash of the minibus headlights did not mean we had stumbled into some mass hippy dogging session, we were whisked around country lanes for 10 minutes in an entirely successful attempt to disorientate us. We then disembarked with other revellers ranging from our virgin state to those that seemed to approach the whole affair with an obsession that could only be described as geek. After a good kilometre or so—by when we were wishing we had enough geek in us to have brought one of their torches and stout walking boots/ rucksack instead of the, well basically just a couple of carrier bags full of bottles that clinked to announce audibly to everybody our hopeless newbie status whenever we tripped over a rock, stump or stoned hippy. Our route through the woods and hills was directed by fluorescent painted stones, arrows fixed in the

MONDAY-CRASHER CRASHER marks an aweinspiring return to Ibiza featuring an illustrious line up of the finest electronic music talent within the house and trance spectrum each and every MONDAY NIGHT from 16th June onwards. boughs of trees, and the odd helpful pixie and goblin along the way (I wonder what was in that flask of tea we all shared at the car park). Some way off our destination you could hear the unmistakeable thud of bass, further still and the higher frequencies came in range. I suppose I was expecting one or two hundred watts running from a vw camper with a few friendly souls around the place. In fact there were hoards of hippies. Is Hoard the correct collective for hippies? Pride of Lions, a murder of Crows, Hoard of Hippies? Sounds a bit aggressive. I like the sound of a Happening of Hippies. So there was this huge happening of hippies (it works) but it was the equipment and staging that really got me. OK for all we knew 5 meters in the other direction could have been a main road but the way we had come made it feel like we were in the middle of nowhere. There was a huge sound system, massive bass bins, a lighting rig of impressive effect and the entire forest clearing in a natural hollow of the land was surrounded by huge decorated backdrops (lots more of that fluorescent paint and trippy patterns that reminded me of afternoons as a 15 year old sitting round Dale Jarrod's listening to Ozric tentacles whilst feigning enthusiasm at colouring in his similarly drawn cassette covers knowing that our reward would soon be handed round in an inhalable form). Really the whole set up was amazing. What really seems incredible in Ibiza’s anti-everything-music and denuncia culture was that there could be a spot isolated enough to escape the reach of a party pooper. Talking of party pooper the toilet facilities were rather less impres-

TUESDAY – CRECHE London-born house and techno night CRÉCHE will launch weekly from Tuesday 10 June and is set to bring big changes and plenty of underground cool to San Antonio. sive —but it did seem kind of cute to have a separate girls bush area and boys bush area - though any preference as to which gender’s faeces and piss I would rather stand in would be marginal at best (if pushed girl’s obviously, they being considerably less ghastly than men in such matters). One top tip is to take some toilet paper, you might not need it but you could strike up a pretty good trade with a desperate hippy who has lived on nothing but organic prune and sprout casserole for the last week. You might even get to swap it for some of that delicious tea. Also take more drink. However much you think take more. Lots of waiting around in car parks and cross country trekking left our copious supplies severely depleted on arrival and other than a lactating cosmic earth mother alternatives were slim. Finally do not expect hippies to practice what they preach when it comes to the end and there is one minibus and a few hundred people to get away from the area. It turned into a bun fight just as bad as the last Disco Bus from Amnesia—far more push n shove than peace n love. Then of course there was the music. I would really, really, love to love it, but I don’t. If Psy Trance is your thing you must get to a forest party. I can’t imagine anywhere you could have a better time. It’s just a case of asking about— there were a group putting on a night in Cala De Bou a few weeks back. Be cool and ask about. Sadly however, I just don’t dig it (man). You need to see the colours so I have put a ‘typical’ photo on page 14. Âwww.psymusic.co.uk Âwww.psynews.org

Page 10 Competing against the sunset is a tough one to consider.

"But that’s not an issue for

you. You’re confident (stupid question really Nick—how is he supposed to answer?) SR: Yeah, we’re confident, but we’re humble. We know we are up against the biggest clubbing brands in the world and it’s year one. Everyone is being really helpful We thought there would be walls going up and doors closing but exactly the opposite really—people are really keen to get onside. So for Gatecrasher to have a permanent home in Ibiza is fantastic, it’s the clubbing shop window to the world. It’s where all the best and top DJ’s come.

"Sorry,

that’s brought the inevitable Las Vegas question up. SR: Well yeah Las Vegas is special, obviously the hotels , and where you had Elvis on back in the 60’s you’ve got Tiesto now. I’ve been to the clubs out there and they are amazing, the fit outs are incredible, the service is amazing, but to me it’s all plastic fantastic, Ibiza is not plastic. Ibiza is authentic, I mean look around you (we’re sitting in Pikes so it’s a pretty good place to illustrate his point). I’m not dissing Las Vegas though I think it’s great, would I want a club in Las Vegas hell yeah, would I take a deal if it was offered hell yeah, but you know I’d actually prefer Miami—Miami is a walking place, Las Vegas everything has to be by car. But anyway that’s that, this is Ibiza, it’s where the Balearic Beat and Acid House started.

"Did you used to come over

back in the early days? SR: Yeah the early days but then I took a bit of an Ibiza sabbatical as I was running other businesses. I used to go to Amnesia though it was really different back then. I think Pacha was my favourite and then I moved on to Privilege—I loved that big ‘wow’ look it had. I can’t remember where I came the very first time though. Probably San Antonio, I

FRIDAY – EL CARNAVAL Launching 20th June, Friday nights go to EL CARNAVAL. A brand new night, created just for Gatecrasher Ibiza, EL CARNAVAL promises to be a full on Ibizian festival. Celebrating the original spirit of Ibiza, EL CARNAVAL will combine Ibiza’s best elements; incorporating a wild party attitude, sheer glamour, out of this world entertainment and full on flamboyance. Expect to witness amazing stage spectacles, circus freaks, midgets, fire and debauchery

remember the place we went had no roof, cant remember the name. It wasn’t Es paradis, it had loads of trees in it.

"You mentioned Es Paradis,

it must be unique having two clubs in such close proximity SR: It is but I think we’re going for very different markets, they have their water parties and foam parties, we’re going for something a bit different, hence the Future Sound of San Antonio we’re promoting.

"Is sound the key. Is it your

biggest selling point? Everybody raves about your sound system, how would you rate it’s pull alongside the Gatecrasher brand for example? SR: Wow yeah that sound system is something else. When we first looked at the club I thought I love the sound system, but now I’m really inside the club I’m even more impressed. It is awesome. I absolutely love it.

"You

seem quite hands on from what I saw of you at your preview night. You were directing lights having people change stuff, SR: Yeah you’ve got to. It’s quite a technical challenge to get it right. I love all aspects of the club system, sounds, lights pyros, well hey it’s all boys toys—who wouldn’t love it . There were a few teething problems with moving leds but the trouble with the sound is that DJ’s won’t go out on the dance floor and listen to what everyone else is hearing. Obviously they have a DB monitor in the booth with them., but it’s a trait of many DJ’s I’m always telling them to go out on the floor.

"I’d have thought that good

at a time in my life—I can honestly remember putting my head up against Motorhead’s PA stack—now I’m just another tinnitus head SR: Me too I’m half deaf.

"What?

SR: Pardon? Our thanks to Simon Raine.

Âwww.oceanbeachhotelibiza.com I know what you are thinking, cut to the chase, how much is it? There are sometimes some crazy prices attached to VIP and 4 Star venues in Ibiza, often exaggerated I’m sure but forget all that anyway—Ocean’s pricing is attainable to most regular wage earning people—until you kids of course, then you’re knackered so all the more reason to enjoy life to the full now. We found peak season (end of July) Double Superior for 192€ (£150) per night but if you can afford it the Suite seems a bargain at 40€ (£32) more. I mean if you

are going to do it you may as well do it right. Compare this to a Superior Double in the same period with Ushuaia at 502€ (£401) and Ocean starts to look a real bargain. As words like ‘bargain’ have no place in your 2 weeks a year of spoiling yourself just forget about the price difference while you are here then remember it when you look at your bank balance when you get home. Top Tips:1. Book direct through the Ocean Beach Club website—you get the same price but lots of extras thrown in. 2. Dress to impress-last year’s M&S swimwear may do you in Lanzarote but Ocean Party People take poolwear seriously. 3. Pair up and go Presidential. few weeks. However I might be able to solve a problem for you if you are looking for a present for a mature man or a young boy. This is based on the assumption that men as they get older revert back to their childhood. My recommendation is to buy them “The Dangerous Book for Boys” by Conn and Hal Iggulden. This book full of useful information like: how to make the greatest paper plane in the world, five knots every boy should know, how to play poker, juggling, cloud formations, codes and ciphers, famous battles, marbles, making crystals, insects and spiders, dinosaurs, Scott of the Antarctic and the solar system. These are just some of the ideas, facts and extraordinary stories that are included in this book. No I am not on commission I just think it is a fun book for all ages although I should declare an interest in as much one of the coauthors is a friend of my son. Well it s time to go, I hope you have a good week reading and relaxing, mind you isn’t it strange weather this year, very topsy turvey. Ah well as they say, “variety is the spice of life”, yours Juan.

View From The Pew

"Bob the Ex-Vicar President Eisenhower said: "The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionable integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office (or a church)”. In the Oxford English Dictionary the definition of Integrity is ‘the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.’ A further addition usually when for instance referring to a building as having integrity, it means ‘Soundly constructed’. One thing I began to notice when I returned to the UK last year that there seemed to be a plethora of stories about public figures that all lacked this distinct and important quality of life – integrity. And not just amongst public figures. Banks which have knowingly sold false Payment Protection Insurance plans to people who

did not ask for them cowboy builders, electricians and plumbers who say they will do something and never turn up people making phone calls pretending to be computer engineers or hacking into e-mail accounts and sending out messages saying they have been robbed and need money immediately to help them get home from some distant destination. With public figures it may not affect us so much personally but it is, I think, something that irritates most of us when we see public figures saying or doing totally inappropriate things: the giving of gifts to ensure that the Football World Cup takes place in Qatar MPs fiddling their expenses celebrities saying foolish things on Twitter and having to retract commentators saying things they should not when they think they are not on the air but are still being recorded. And even bigger things like the Iraq War and its consequences and a bank on the verge of bankruptcy because of a totally inept and unqualified person as its CEO. The fiascos in the EU - The list is endless. I asked myself “Why do we see so much lack of integrity in our

"Juan Sometimes the creative juices just don’t flow. Do they ever I hear you cry! Anyway I had a quiet week last week so when you do not get out and about you are less likely to see something that will trigger off a thought that maybe fairly interesting. The last week has been dominated in waiting in for the man to come and sort out my Router and then having a problem connecting my wife’s laptop (still not sorted). My other main problem is that the pool has once again sprung a leak!! Why does it have to happen in the summer? Dear old Sods law raises its ugly head again. I think in the short term I will have to keep filling it up as we have family coming out in a

modern society?” The only conclusion I could come to is that there is no longer any solid basis from which people learn the moral code and so people do what they want. I wonder what it would look like if we did a graph with one line of the decline in integrity and another line with the decline in belief in God, and particularly the Christian faith which was the basis of our society for so long? I suspect they would be very near to parallel lines! I leave you to your own conclusions but it seems more than coincidence to me. And for me the obvious answer is to get back to the roots of our culture and historical faith and teach this to our children and grandchildren. If they are taught it, it is up to them whether they accept it or not as they grow older, but if we do not teach it to them it may be lost, if not forever, for a very long time. "Dear Kate Thank you in advance for reading my letter and I hope you can support me in some way though I fear this maybe rather a complex issue, but lets see. Two years ago I was diagnosed with an incurable condition that will eventually cause me to die, I am on some very heavy meds but fortunately the last two years I have been pretty symptom free to the outside world and have by and large carried on as normal. However, recently that has begun to change and I cannot cover up some of the symptoms any more. My grown up children

came to visit and were visibly shocked and upset by my appearance. A couple of weeks after leaving they have now written me a joint letter asking me to be explicit about the future, what it may hold and most importantly that they both want me to move back to the UK so they can spend time with me and support me and their father through whatever time is left. I understand their thoughts, I am flattered that they want to help and deeply moved that they want me to return so much that they got together to write the letter. The difficulty is that I feel my life, or to be more precise the end of my life, will be so much more peaceful here. I may be looking through rose tinted glasses as I have no idea how the Spanish health system supports end of life care but I do have a notion of peacefully slipping away at home with my husband (and children if they wish) present, hearing the ocean, the wind and the birds. I know this probably wouldn’t happen in the UK and my concern is that the anxiety and stress of moving back would exacerbate my condition. But, as a mum who adores and loves her kids more than anything and would do absolutely anything for them, I feel incredibly torn and wracked with guilt for even thinking I may do this without them being a full time part of the journey. How will that effect their grieving process, and all sorts of other questions are flying around my head that one second I am mentally packing up almost fifteen years of happiness and the next I am sticking to my guns and staying put. What can / should I do to ensure that we are all as comfortable as possible in a situation that really is so desperately uncomfortable, especially for them. Thank you, PD. Dear PD Firstly thank you so much for your letter, so heartfelt and I am sure a difficult one to write. You are correct there are a lot of complex issues wrapped up in what you have written and many emotions and people to consider.

However I am going to keep this relatively brief and say that I think you summed it up perfectly when you said that you are a “mum who adores and loves her kids more then anything and would do absolutely anything for them”. That is what mums do and sometimes it can take those children a long long time to come to realize what mums and dads do for them. However, this is your time and my feeling is that you have to do what ever brings you the most peace and least amount of discomfort. No one but you can say what that will be, it maybe going back to the UK it maybe staying in Ibiza but the most important thing to focus on is you and what will make your time as meaningful and stress free as possible. I wish you all the best, take care, Kate. For contact see my advert in local services.

"Kevin Russell Recreational Drugs The consumption of recreational drugs is always a hot topic and part of the culture of the Ibizan summer music scene, as it is in many places throughout the world. One drug that has hit the headlines recently is MDPV, which has been dubbed by headline sensationalists the cannibal or zombie drug. MDPV is a plant based cathinone drug which is similar to amphetamine drugs such as speed or MDMA (ecstasy) and as such has similar effects. The effects include euphoria, empathy and increasing alertness and talkativeness. Negative effects can include a ‘downer’ or depression due to low levels of dopamine (which has already been used to give the euphoric feeling), anxiety, psychosis and paranoia. And of course with the majority of drugs there is no way of knowing what it has been mixed with and the

Ibiza Insight 1972 Our search for the first editions of the Ibiza Sun is as yet fruitless however we are indebted to Lynn for sending us this copy of Ibiza insight from October 1972. Priced at 10 pesatas the cover photo beauty contest caption reads “this week two lovely holidaymakers are selected from a bevy of beauties …”. The main news story talks of the imporimpurities can also have their own side effects. The method of administration can also have health risks. MDPV can be snorted, smoked or even injected although the main method is oral. People who share needles, pipes or straws have a risk of HIV or Hepatitis C transmission. Deaths have been confirmed The Journal of Medical Toxicology reported that cardiac arrests and resultant brain injury of two men were a direct result of MDPV use. British body builder Dale Burns who was tasered by police during a violent struggle in 2011, subsequently died of a heart attack, had also taken MDPV. However parts of the media were quick to seize upon a story that emerged from Miami in 2012 when police shot dead a man who was apparently ‘eating’ or ‘chewing’ the face of another man. The autopsy of the man shot dead showed he had no MDPV in his system at the time of the attack, only marijuana. Linking MDPV to cannibalism is

tance of extending the summer season tourist trade into the winter months—nice to know nothing much has changed in over 4 decades. If you have any early copies of the Ibiza Sun, or any other archive materials relating to Ibiza’s ex-pat community we’d love to see them. Âeditor@theibizasun.com

unsubstantiated and has not been backed up by any scientific literature. Paranoia and panic attacks caused by drugs can make some people aggressive and as a result possibly bite others but this type of loss of control can happen anywhere, even on a football pitch. One UK paper last week inappropriately reported that cannibal linked ‘experimental’ MDPV was being sold to ‘British revellers’ in Ibiza. If you have any worries about taking drugs or the side effects they may have, then don’t take them. If you feel unwell seek help, many of the big night clubs have nurses rooms where first aid can be given. Don’t mix drugs and watch out for and stay with your friends. Enjoy Ibiza safely. ARIES - Four of Swords Legal matters and the art of negotiation becomes the main focus of your week. Intuition is telling you to be wary of others intentions whatever they offer; there's no need to be rushed into any decision. Take your time; your strategy needs to be well thought out if you're too out manoeuvre those hoping to get the better of you. TAURUS - Seven of Cups Expect a stroke of good luck or expect success when this card appears. However, in the coming week you’ll be tempted to overindulge on every level; try to moderate excessive behaviour otherwise it will be a case of play now and pay later! Those of you that work in the photography or film business will attract admiration for your work. GEMINI - Ace of Cups Good news is on the way and with it a reason to celebrate. It’s a time of new beginnings and for some a birth that brings friends and family together. If you're awaiting an outcome to long running saga the indications are that you'll get the result you want. Emotional balance comes easy after a period of stress and vulnerability. CANCER - Nine of Swords Negative thinking is your enemy this week. OK, it's difficult to put on a happy face when there’s so much going on, making it impossible for you to see the wood for the trees. Try dealing with one thing at a time by cherry picking the problems to sort out immediately; remember, most of what you fear may never happen. LEO - The Hanged Man This card brings a deep desire for self-change. You're determined to breakthrough old patterns of behaviour and to literally turn your life upside down in order to gain new perspectives on old habits. If you’ve been in a stubborn mood lately, you now appreciate that a flexible approach makes life better for all around you. You’re able to be selfsacrificing. VIRGO - Prince of Wands Travel is linked to business opportunities which although rewarding, takes up time you'd rather spend with friends and family. Creative impulses are also encouraged with this card so take advantage of this influence to release your inner artist. For some, this Prince is a new and sincere admirer; one who’s younger than you in years; but not in attitude. LIBRA - The Star Your path becomes clearer this week as a sense of optimism replaces the world weary feeling of late. Your positive attitude will be infectious so that those around you are happy to step in line with your plans. The Star brings hope and encouragement after a stressful time. Any health concerns/issues fade as you feel energised and up for adventure! SCORPIO - Princess of Disks Lots to weigh up this week and you’re in a bit of a quandary over a financial matter. If someone wants a loan, wait a week before making any firm commitment. Some Scorpio’s may consider a career change or be rewarded with some sort of promotion; which could entail going back to 'school' or to retrain in some way. SAGITTARIUS - The Chariot After minor but irritating setbacks, you can now move forward in life. You feel more optimistic and are willing to go with the flow and trust the direction you're going in. Importantly, others support your plans. This card is fortunate for those moving home or location; the move is a good one. A business opportunity is given the go ahead. CAPRICORN - The Wheel of Fortune A change in your fortunes is indicted by 10th card in the TAROT. Much depends on your Karma as to whether the change is for the better this week or if you're in for a bumpy ride. If you've thought about yourself; then success will be short lived. If however, you've been generous and sharing, expect changes for the better. AQUARIUS - Eight of Cups You’re on an emotional journey where you'll be leaving behind people who have no boundaries or have exhausted you. It's important to set limits with those who drain your energy and keep them at a distance. Balanced relationships are now needed on your new emotional voyage of discovery. Libra, Aries, Cancer or Capricorn people offer advice you can respect. PISCES - Ten of Disks This is a fab card for your finances as you'll be attracting financial rewards with insulting ease; especially if you've just executed a cunning plan to increase earnings. Customers/clients are happy to buy what you’re selling so set the bar high. Ambitions are about to be realised as your public love what you do. Property investments are worth looking into.

Full Moon @ The Royal Plaza.

"Brian Whetton. So summer is definitely here with long warm evenings, ideal for outdoor dining, and where better to treat yourself and your partner to a romantic Full Moon Roof-Top Dinner than at The Royal Plaza Hotel in Ibiza town. There are two such occasions planned, one this coming Saturday 12th July, the second on Friday 8th August, which is Ibiza Town’s Fiesta day, meaning that you can enjoy the spectacle of the fireworks, superb views of the Old Town while you dine in comfort on the hotel’s roof top terrace. For these special events the hotel is offering a delightful gourmet dinner for the amazing price of just 35€ per person, which includes wine included. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed these evenings in the past and will certainly be doing so this year. The Royal Plaza has undergone some refurbishment including the roof garden, pool and spa areas which are all open to nonresidents. We find this hotel a real breath of fresh air, charmingly traditional with elegant fittings and facilities, menus that are local, international, always imaginatively different, also nowhere near as expensive as one would imagine. The other thing we enjoy is the service

Royal Plaza Rooftop Terrace from staff who obviously enjoy their work which reflects in the professional, attentive, but non-intrusive, service they provide. So why not sample all of this by giving yourselves a real treat and reserving a table for a Full Moon Roof Top Dinner. Telephone 971 310 000 See Advert Page 3

Sport from back page plaining over the radio about each other. Button came in P4 and nearly caught Ricciardo on the last lap finishing just 0.9s behind the Red Bull. Magnussen crossed the line 7th and Hulkenberg in his Force India 8th – he has scored points in all 9 nine races, his teammate Perez managing 11th. Kvyat and Vergne came 9th and 10th which is a result for Torro Rosso following problems in previous races. Lotus had a mixed race with Grosjean P12 and Maldonado retiring with exhaust problems with just 2 laps to go. Maldonado was lucky to get that far after being launched from the track in spectacular fashion following a move from Sauber’s Gutierrez, Gutierrez was not only forced to retire but handed a 3 place grid penalty for the next race in Germany. Sutil for Sauber finished 13th for the third race in a row and Kobayashi P15 for Caterham was sandwiched between the Marussia boys - Bianchi P14 and Chilton P16, unfortunately for Caterham they lost Ericsson in lap 11 after jumping a kerb

and smashing his front suspension. So whilst we didn’t see the drama of multiple tyre failures like last year, this race still had everything, a British home win, a crash which proved just how much safer these cars are - Raikkonen suffered bruises to his legs in the impact which measured 47G, Alonso driving like a demon and Hamilton closing the gap at the top of the leaderboard to 4 points. But let’s not get carried away, It’s Rosbergs home race up next.. Jezza´S Sports

"Jeremy Parmenter Almost back to normality, ladies, as the sun is beginning to set on the World Cup. Expect there's been fighting over the TV for the last fortnight, with Wimbledon at the same time. Tennis, what a fabulous Final on Sunday between Federer and Djokovic. I so wanted the Fed to win it, not only because I had tipped him on day 1, but also he was going for his 8th Wimbledon title, a new record, and his 18th Major. Still, t'wasn't to be as the younger Novak just man-

aged to break the Fed's serve in the 5th and final set to take his 2nd Wimbledon title. But, oh, it was so close, even tho' the winner had the opportunity of winning it earlier, in the 4th, but the Fed showed what a great fighter he is by winning 5 games on the trot, to take the set, having been 5-2 down. At least there was some solace for him though, as he moved up to 3rd in the World rankings, not bad for a nearly 33 year old. Brilliant Final and spell-binding TV. As for Our Andy, beaten in the Quarters, he bowed out with not even a whimper as he now drops to No 10 in the rankings. In the Ladies Final, bit of a let-down really, as Czech Petra Kvitova won her second Wimbledon title in 3 years as she crushed Canadian newcomer Eugenie Bouchard in two sets and 55 minutes which makes me agree with Our Andy's mum, Judy, who thinks that the Ladies Major semis and Finals should be played over 5 sets. Cycling and in Yorkshire to start with and latterly, Cambridge and then London, were the points of interest as the Tour de

France hit England's green and pleasant land, and fans turned out in their thousands to witness this once in a lifetime event. Don't know about the “selfies” on the roads that they were taking but suffice to say, the only casualty was Brit Mark Cavendish who, in his own words, instigated the crash that saw him dislocate his collarbone and put his whole Tour in jeopardy. At the time of writing, our favourite, Chris Froome, lies in 5th overall, with Italian Vincenzo Nibali leading by 2 seconds after Stage 3, but most of the honours to date have gone to German Marcel Kittel, who won two stages of the first 3, including the final sprint up the Mall. So it's off to France now and more news to come next week, with the undoubted assistance of my insider friend and TDF nut, Señor Jules! Golf after Justin Rose's recent success in the US of A, it's congrats to another Brit, this time Graeme “Big Mac” McDowell as he won the Alstom Open in Paris. With an 8 shot deficit going in to the final round and apparently out of contention, he

blitzed the final round and dropped only one shot to beat American Kevin Stadler in regulation play, so well done to BM and great practice for next week's Open. Cricket and England begin their 5 match Test Series against India on Wednesday, so let's hope Cookie and his new boys can get off to a flyer. Much more interesting was the admission by ex-skipper Andrew Strauss, on the Aussie airwaves, that KP and I quote, “was a complete ****”, a term I actually agree with, as although KP is a stunning batsman it was all about me,me,me and as for his best friend, that demented Gooner, Piers Morgan, (I love the quote from Paul Newman, the Mail's Cricket Correspondent “that thoroughly unpleasant mouthpiece”), he should shut his trap as well! 'Tis all for this week and looking forward to a Brazil/Argentina WC Final on Sunday. Oh, Jez, you naughty soon-to-bepensioner, you've let the cat outta the bag! (ed—not your best prediction Jezza)

Quarter Final Results Brazil 2 Colombia 1 – what should have been a classic was marred by Neymar's injury as the host's star player was literally assaulted by Colombia's Juan Zuniga with a knee in the back resulting in Neymar being airlifted to hospital with what turned out to Jezza’ World Cup Report be a broken vertebra. Mind you, the Brazilians weren't blameless as they took it in turns to hammer Colombia's star player Hames Rodriguez in what can only be described as 'rotational fouling' a new saying in the footie vernacular. Shame, really, as it took the headlines from a stunning strike by PSG's new boy, David Luiz that proved to be the winner and see the hosts progress to the Semis. Germany 1 France 0 – oh dear, oh dear, whatever happened to French flair! They must have thought it was a group game as they had no urgency and no real ideas, whilst Germany were, well, just Germany! Not really much to cheer here apart from Neuer's wonderful instinctive save from France's Benzema which would have taken the game in to extra time and Hummels winning header from a set-piece. So, Germany march on to their 4th consecutive semi-final, a new record, and a meeting with hosts Brazil on Tuesday. Holland 0 Costa Rica 0 – the Dutch go through after extra-time winning the penalty shoot-out 4-3 and a master-stroke from Man Utd's new manager, Louis van Gaal, as he substitutes 'keeper Cillessen for Newcastle Utd's Tim Krol in the last minute of extra-time. Psychological brilliance which paid off as Krol saves 2 Rican penalties to take the Dutch through to the Semis. Apart from that, you have to credit the “minnows” of England's group for getting so far, but not much of a match which Holland were expected to win fairly easily. Argentina 1 Belgium 0 – two of my “head” teams come face to face and, just like France, Belgium ran out of ideas in what turned out to be a pretty boring Quarter, only brought to life by Messi's brilliance in-

cluding a 45 yard defence-splitting pass and Higuain's stunning and instinctive strike for the winner. As for the Premier League stars in the Belgian side, Hazard faded, Fellaini was rubbish, Lukaku was wasted and only 'keeper Courtois showed just why he'll start next season as Chelsea's No. 1. So, my tip pre-WC, Argentina, sneak through to a Semi with Holland on Wednesday. Jezza's Comments: Said most of what I wanted to say above, apart from the fact that my prediction in last week's report has come through with two should-be classic Semis; Brazil v. Germany and Argentina v. Holland. Two European giants v. two South American giants. Match-ups all over the place with Luiz/Muller, Fernandinho/ Schweinsteiger; Hulk/Hummels; van Persie and Robben/DiMichelis and Mascherano; Messi/Sneijder etc. etc. As for predictions, well, Brazil without Neymar and skipper Thiago must tilt it in Germany's favour, but I'm going for 58,000 Brazilian fans in the stadium and millions on the streets to pull the hosts through to play, hmmmmm! Argentina, mainly due to the brilliance of one Lionel Messi. Probably go to at least extra-time and penalties and di Maria will be a miss for them but methinks Holland, after their pretty poor showing against Costa Rica, could have shot their bolt, unless Robben and van Persie can produce the fireworks and van Gaal produces another master-stroke! First Semi Final Brazil 1 Germany 7 (SEVEN!) - Well, well, who would have anticipated that scoreline! Absolutely incredible and I'm still trying to get my head round it. As well as Germany played, Brazil just collapsed, with no leadership, no ideas, no midfield and certainly no defence. When Germany went 1-0 up we all thought the hosts would come back, but when Germany scored 4 in an amazing 7 minute spell to be 5-0 up after 29 minutes, there was just no way back. We all wondered how Brazil would react in the second half, and although they came out with 2 subs and a more positive outlook, at

Page 19

least for the first 15 minutes, Germany were able to counter-attack with pace and scored twice more to inflict Brazil's equal worst defeat ever, let alone a WC Semi. Well done to Germany, though, and especially to striker Miroslav Klose, who scored his 16th WC Finals goal overtaking Brazilian legend Ronaldo, and help take Germany to their 8th WC Final. Some result and whoever they play in the Final, Argentina or Holland, must be quivering in their boots! The newspaper will be at print during the second semi final game. The final is on Sunday 13th at 9pm local Spanish time.

author, El Greco, in Valladolid, to which he contributes with two paintings. In both he uses antagonistic tones, like pink, green and violet. Regarding the style and intent, Broto still admits "being abstract." Not looking to recreate reality, his intention is metaphorical: to show balance despite the combination of opposing elements. His ultimate goal is to create a world apart through the impact of the visual impression and drag it to the public, through hints and allusions. Although he has continued the same trend throughout his career, what can be observed is the disappearance of the dark, grey and earth tones, which Broto said he has done to bring some optimism to this pessimist world he is fed up with. The sample of acrylic works by this author began their tour in Palma de Mallorca, where he exhibited at the Contemporary Art Museum of Es Baluard, between June 2013 and January 2014. Afterwards, he moved to the El Roser of Ciutadella, where he remained between April and June. In Ibiza, it will be open until February 28th, Monday to Friday, 10am to 1.30pm and from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. "Nicole Torres Broto’s Pentagrams in Ibiza The nine works included “Grandes Partituras” (Great Scores) by prestigious painter José Manuel Broto can be seen in the Sala Capitular of the former convent of the Dominicans in Dalt Vila. Councillor for Culture of Ibiza, Lina Sansano, and Visual Arts Coordinator of the Institut d'Estudis Baleàrics, Margalida Vidal, presented the works included in the exhibition, which will remain open until February 28th. Broto returns to island, where he had already exhibited in his youth. This time the author is welcomed as a consolidated author, a referent for other contemporary artists and of significant international presence. The acrylics presented by the National Fine Arts 1995 Award winner are a selection of paintings created in the last ten years. Once again, Broto’s love for music is very obvious and visible in the aesthetic of the works. The author, who’s boat made him late to the presentation, assured his paintings reflect division, the sorting of time through sound. Innovating with brighter colours and stronger contrasts, he maintains his usual style. José Manuel Broto feels identified in some ways with El Greco, because they both share concerns about difficultto-mix and difficult to synthesize colours. The work of Broto is part of the group show that pays tribute to this

His easy line drawings in black and white convey a sense of motion, but this show Zabala peppers his works with colour. Jacqueline Bozon illuminates the B12 Vila space The B12 Vila gallery presented this Saturday, July 5th, the last works by Dutch artist Jacqueline Bozon, inspired by Ibiza. The artist has reflected in her works the influence of different cultures and people that she has encountered in her travels around the world, and this time she wanted to dedicate it to the island, a place that, in her view is “overflowing energy, no matter who or what you are. The weather is superb, nature is amazing and full of wonderful people and music” as she told a Diario reporter. All elements giving Ibiza its special character are incorporated into the work of Bozon, in a colourful combination of lines representing the paths of life and that invite to adventure. The harmony, the music and the joy of the people of Ibiza are reflected in the colours and textures on the canvas. "Claire B A brief roundup of some of Ibiza’s fiestas that are coming soon. They’re a great way to observe and participate in some of the island’s local customs and traditions. July 16th Virgen del Carmen July 16th is the day when Ibiza Town holds a fiesta for the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of seamen. Events also take place in other parts of the island, such is the importance of protecting the island’s seafarers and fishermen. The festival of the Virgen del Carmen is celebrated in all the fishing towns on the coast of Spain. The name Carmen is a derivation of Carmel (a mountain in

August 5th Santa Maria Patron Saint's day of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves (Our Lady of the Snows) of the cathedral in Ibiza Town. The celebrations begin with mass in the cathedral followed by folk dancing and parades. In past years the cathedral has been dressed up with the words ‘Ave Maria’ (Hail Mary) written in lights above the clock on the tower. August 8th Sant Ciriac The most important holiday and fiesta in Ibiza. August 8th is the Saints Day for Sant Ciriac, but it has another significance for the islanders, as it was also on this day in 1235 that the Catalan army overthrew the Moors, bringing Christianity to Ibiza and Formentera. There’s usually a communal meal (paella) in Puig des Molins. The festivities culminate with a huge fireworks display at midnight, launched from the sea wall in the port. Useless Info: The Science Of Why Bacon Smells So Good Few things in life make it worth living quite like bacon. The joy of bacon doesn’t start when you eat it, but when it begins to cook and you start to smell it. It turns out, the amazing aroma stems from 150 organic compounds. As heat is applied, sugars, amino acids, and fat in the meat undergo Maillard reactions, and creates the molecules used in their aroma. Many of these compounds smell amazing on their own, but they are a force to be reckoned with when they are smelled in concert.
