A Note of Thanksa

Each year, and in increasing number, our donors signal their devotion to, and confidence in, Nichols College by investing in our vision, our mission, and most importantly, our students. Their support ensures that today’s students are given the resources to capitalize on their ambitions and effectively engage in a technology-driven and rapidly changing global economy.

This cadre of alumni, parents, and friends generously contribute their work, wisdom and wealth. They speak to classes, conduct mock interviews, share intellectual insights on panels, participate in networking programs like the annual Sophomore Shout Out, serve as mentors for Women in Nichols, and engage students in “real-world” consulting projects. They lend their precious time and their extensive knowledge and experience to help us to produce job-ready leaders.

Our volunteer boards, namely our Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors, provide invaluable guidance and often step forward to rally the support of others. Trustees John Davis and Ed Donahue, for example, challenged their 1972 classmates to endow a scholarship in honor of their 50th class reunion this year. Through the energy and perseverance of Trustee Tammy Wolf Smyrl ’94, the Florida Endowed Scholarship, which she initiated, also came to fruition this year to benefit students from the Sunshine State.

In fiscal year 2021-2022, more than $4 million was raised to support our drive toward embracing greatness on the way to increasing the college’s regional and national prominence. Our ninth annual March Match sponsored by Trustee John McClutchy Jr., and third annual Athletics Bison Blitz sponsored by an anonymous donor, continued to break records in 2021-2022, raising more than $225,000 and nearly $113,000 respectively, proving that our momentum is stronger than ever.

Nichols College is truly a college “on the move” and a worthy investment. That’s something that the donors on the following pages and our volunteers can attest to, and what vastly more will discover in the coming years.

Randy and Donna Becker: Giving back is a family legacy

The Becker family’s ties to Nichols College date back to the late 1940s when Herman Becker, while still in trade school, delivered ice cream to campus for Nectar Products. In 1949, at the age of 20, Herman purchased Nectar, sold it to Hood Co. in 1955, and later built Nectarland Restaurant and Sterling Realty in his native Webster. He was also a founding member of the Commerce Group Inc.

But Herman, who died in 2003, was more than an enterprising and successful business leader. He cemented a legacy of community service and philanthropy, which he and his wife Shirley instilled in their four sons, John, Marc, Randy, and Todd.

“Everything my parents did, monetary giving or through time, I learned from them,” says Randy Becker ’83 MBA ’96.

Randy and his wife, Donna (Fitzback) Becker ’83, a Webster native whose benevolent parents also “led by example,” are among the next generation of Beckers investing in and contributing countless hours to civic, humanitarian, and cultural organizations throughout the region, and most notably in the Webster and Dudley communities.

The couple has been together since their senior year in high school, after which Randy enrolled at Nichols College while Donna went off to Worcester Polytechnic Institute. When she transferred to Nichols to study management information systems in her junior year and the pair became engaged, they tried to sell Donna’s father on the efficacy of getting married and becoming RAs to realize a tuition discount. “We had a whole business plan,” asserts Donna. Unsuccessful in that attempt, they wasted little time in marrying a month after graduation in 1983. They are looking forward to celebrating their 40th anniversary in June.

While their love story did not begin at Nichols, “The good thing is Nichols brought us closer together, even taking several classes together,” says Randy.

Randy started his career as an auditor and CPA at the former Arthur Young, and Donna worked in IT at Commerce Insurance (now MAPFRE USA). In 1986, Randy joined the company, rising to the position of executive vice president and CFO before retiring in 2016. He now chairs the MAPFRE USA Board of Directors.

After the birth of their two sons, Andrew and Alexander, Donna dove into volunteer work at their church, school, and library. She and Randy have also participated in the Couple to Couple pre-marital ministry at St. Louis Church for over 30 years.

In addition, Randy chairs the Webster Board of Selectmen and sits on several boards and committees, including the Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts, UMass Memorial Health-Harrington, St. Louis School Endowment Fund, and South Worcester County Communication Center. In 2010, he was elected to the Nichols Board of Trustees, and in 2021, became chair.

Busier than ever, Randy quips,“Donna said I should go back to work as CFO, so I could see her more.”

At Nichols, Randy led the recent Presidential Search Committee and has shared his knowledge and experience in the classroom as a mock interviewer for accounting students. Donna, a board member of the Trustees of the Friends of the Gladys E. Kelly Library and a member of the Friends of the Library, is enlisting the support of students to help plan and market a “Books in Bloom” project to be held in 2023.

The breadth of their financial support is equally notable. They have contributed to the Fels Student Center, established an endowed scholarship in 2010 to assist students, and last year committed $100,000 to the Center for Intelligent Process Automation, which trains students to create software “bots” to automate repetitive business tasks.

“[Robotic Process Automation] is a tool that’s cutting edge,” states Randy, who recalls the tedious tasks associated with auditing. “When I was at Arthur Young, faxes were cutting edge. Nowadays, auditors do much of their work through automation. This will give our students an upper hand as they get out into the workforce.”

Hands down, the best part of giving back to Nichols is the students, say the Beckers. “We appreciate meeting the recipients of our scholarship,” says Donna. “You know you made a difference in someone’s life.”

She is continually impressed with the caliber of Nichols students: “They are well versed and can communicate with adults of all ages.” Randy credits the number of presentations students are required to give throughout their Nichols tenure. “That’s a niche Nichols has developed,” he says. “It makes our students better communicators, which to me is more important than any skill you

In total, the Becker family boasts eight Nichols degrees, encompassing Randy ’83 MBA ’96, Donna ’83, their son Andrew ’12, brother Marc ’81, his wife Andrea ’96 MSOL ’10, and their son Kiel ’09. Add to that the honorary degrees awarded to Herman, posthumously, and Shirley in 2017 for a lifetime of contributions to the community.

Those early ties to Nichols, sewn by Herman Becker more than seven decades ago, have grown into a Becker family legacy.

Alumni Donors on the Rise

lumni donations impact Nichols College in several ways. In addition to supporting and enhancing academics, athletics, student life, and campus improvements, alumni participation indicates confidence in a mission that’s worthy of investment as well as an increasing level of engagement. It’s a strong motivator for young alumni to donate and sets a powerful example for today’s students. It also directly impacts the college’s ability to secure foundation grants and improve in college rankings.

Alumni donors are on the rise at Nichols. Except for a slight dip at the start of the pandemic, giving has been steadily growing over the course of the last several years.

“Alumni and donors are really stepping up to the plate,” says Rae Lynn Glispin ’17 MSOL ’19, director of the Nichols Fund. She reports that in fiscal year 2022 (July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022),

the college saw its highest number of alumni donors in over seven years, and an increase of 8 percent over the prior fiscal year. In addition, the number of gifts increased 8.12 percent overall, and the number of unique donors increased 13.5 percent overall.

More strikingly, Glispin adds, is the rise in the number of GOLD (Graduates Of the Last Decade) donors, an increase of more than 20 percent in fiscal year 2022.

“Nichols is on the move, and the support and investment of alumni cannot be overstated,” says President Glenn M. Sulmasy, JD, LL.M. “I am pleased and proud that more alumni are joining us on our journey toward regional and national prominence.”
