WICKHAM NICHE MODERN MODCRAFT ATLAS INDUSTRIES ARCHITECTURAL GLASS, INC.

The old mill buildings of Beacon, New York may be shuttered but design and manufacturing are still thriving in this historic Hudson Valley town. Much has been written about the area’s fine arts renaissance, but applied arts are also making a vigorous comeback. These five companies represent some of the best of what is being made in Beacon today.

Wickham makes solid wood furniture using responsibly sourced Hudson Valley hardwoods. Founded on the premise that we have extraordinary resources “in our own back yard,” Wickham delights in the use of black walnut, white oak, black cherry, white ash, red elm, and other local species. Jessica Wickham’s carefully crafted designs combine natural forms with modernist elements resulting in unique, enduring pieces of furniture. Since 2004, Wickham has been sourcing “dead and down” logs from Hudson Valley landscapers and custom milling them at their bandsaw mill in Bullville, NY. Carefully stacked flitches are air-dried for approximately two years followed by kiln drying to ensure workability for fine furniture. Wickham maintains an inventory of over 10,000 board feet of natural edge slabs and clients are encouraged to visit the studio/workshop on Main Street in Beacon to select material for their projects.
