Brief instructions for siting a nest box • Site at least 3.5 m above ground. A box 4.5–6 m up will potentially attract

more species.

• Place on trees or buildings, but not in an overly-exposed position. The

entrance should face SW to SE.

• Do not use paint or preservatives. This may discourage or even kill bats if • • • • •

inappropriate substances are used. The box is more likely to be used if sited near to a food source (insects) such as gardens, fields, water or woodlands. To see if the box is being used, check for droppings (similar to mouse droppings) or watch at dusk during the summer for emerging bats. If not used after two years, try re-siting it. Occasionally, a bat box may be used by birds. If a bird nests in the box do not disturb until nesting is over then remove the nest remains. Once discovered, a bat roost is protected by law and must not be disturbed.

The 2FN Bat Box has two entrances - one at the front and one at the rear against the tree. Bats often creep into the rear entrance but leave by the front. It has an increased internal height relative to the 2FN and its domed roof allows bats to form clusters. This design has proved highly successful with Noctule and Bechstein's bats. Up to 28 Noctule Bats with 9 young have been recorded in a 2FN. This bat box is effective against small predators and excludes

Schwegler 1FF with built-in wooden rear panel

Since the 1FF is open at the bottom, it does not need cleaning, making it ideal for hanging in inaccessible places such as steep slopes and house walls. The 1FF is fitted with a roughened rear panel made of hardwearing wood. The animals can therefore choose between the cooler wood-concrete or the warmer wooden panel. The internal width reduces, making it ideal for bats which inhabit crevices, such as Pipistrelle and Noctule bats. For conservation projects and studies, the entire front of the box can easily be swung open for inspection purposes. H 43 x W 27 x D 14 cm | 8.3 kg

Bats which are highly sociable creatures, are attracted to this box because it has many places from which they can hang and use as a nursing area to raise their young. With plenty of space, this model is very popular for accommodating large colonies in summer, especially of Noctule (Nyctalus noctula), Nathusius` Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii) and Common Long-eared Bat (Plecotus auritus). The front panel consists of three grooved wooden panels; a special roof panel with an insulated grill is ideal for bats to cling to.

This box has the same internal design as the 1FS (left) but its special multi-layered cavity wall provides excellent insulation while also allowing air to permeate. This makes it ideal both for hibernation in winter and for encouraging large colonies in summer. Up to 180 hibernating individuals have been recorded in one box. Three internal grooved wooden panels can be easily lifted out for inspection and cleaning. This box is ideal for use on trees or other flat surfaces, and comes with mounting blocks.

Please note: this box must be delivered on a pallet incurring a minimum shipping charge of £24.00 + VAT for UK delivery.

Wooden bat boxes

Double-chamber Oak Bat Box This wooden box with two internal chambers and access ladder will provide a habitat for many bat species. The heavy construction provides good insulation and longevity, as well as preventing predators from chewing the entrance slot. The front door is hinged for inspection and cleaning.

Double-chamber FSC Softwood Bat Box A traditional bat box with access slit at the base and access ladder. This box is made from FSC-certified European redwood, with removeable internal dividing panel providing two chambers. Inside, grooves in the wood provide a rough interior for the bats to grip. The lid is hinged for inspection.

Wooden boxes should not be painted or treated with any type of preservative, as these can harm the bats. Made using FSC certified wood. Untreated wood will last 5-10 years.

Wooden boxes are subject to fluctuating temperatures, so site three boxes around a tree facing different directions, in a fairly sheltered position, to provide the best choice of environments for the bats.

Bat Brick

Bat Access Tile Set

The availability of roost sites for bat species is becoming more limited. However, bats can be encouraged to remain at old sites or colonise new sites by incorporating artificial roost spaces into buildings as they are being built or renovated. The bat brick is a standard sized brick, shaped especially to allow bats to access the cavity of a house. They can be incorporated during both new build or renovation projects. (A cavity chamber may need to be constructed to maintain an area free of insulating material where bats can roost).

The bat access tile set provides purpose made access points within your roof tiles or ridge tiles. Available in five traditional roof tile colours, the Set presents a bat-optimized entrance to the under-felt, or to the loft when the under-felt is opened. Each set comprises three roof tiles. The top ‘tunnel’ tile offers the bat an 18mm high x 165mm long (approx.) tunnel to an entrance hole in the undertiles. This allows the bat to crawl into the roost area. The two tiles beneath the `tunnel' tile have small cutaway sections to facilitate access. The large double camber provides the maximum amount of natural air flow under the tiles. Pipistrelle bats prefer confined spaces such as under roof tiles. The Brown Long-Eared Bat likes roof timbers and ridges inside lofts.

The bricks are available in three colours: Red, Golden and Brown.

Bat boxes for incorporation into buildings Habibat Bat Box with Staffordshire smooth brick or custom facing

With the renovation of older buildings in rural areas, the availability of roost sites for bats is being reduced. However, they can be encouraged to remain at old sites or colonise new sites by the incorporation of artificial roost spaces during the construction or renovation process. The Habibat Bat Box is a large, solid box made of insulating concrete with an internal roost space. It can be incorporated into the fabric of a building under construction or renovation. A variety of bespoke facings can be fitted to suit the building, whether in brick, stone, timber or with no facing so that rendering may be applied. Alternatively the Box is available ready faced in either red or blue smooth Staffordshire brick. The Box is suitable for species most commonly found roosting in buildings in the UK, such as Pipistrelle, Natterer's, Whiskered and Brandt's bats.

Schwegler Brick Box Type 27

This Tube system meets the characteristic behavioural requirements of the types of bats that inhabit buildings. The design maintains excellent climatic conditions inside the Tube allowing the animals to either hang onto the wooden back or onto the wood-concrete front. It requires no maintenance because droppings fall out of the entrance ramp. It can be installed on external walls, under wooden paneling or in building cavities . Birds will not occupy it. The 2FR version has holes in the sides: when set in modular fashion, a larger space is created for the bats to move around in.

Specifically designed for bats, this Box should be cemented into a wall in a building or underneath a bridge, arch or tunnel where conditions are relatively humid. It is particularly useful for incorporating into new buildings, or to provide new roost sites where existing buildings with bats are being renovated. The Box contains a single internal wooden panel to simulate a crevice where bats can roost. The front panel is removeable for easy cleaning . Installed flush with a wall, the Box can be rendered so that only the entrance hole is visible.

Schwegler bat boxes for external surfaces Universal Bat Box 1FFH

Brick Roost 1GS

The culmination of Schwegler's extensive research into bat boxes, the 1FFH has numerous innovations as well as tried and tested features. A high inside ceiling ensures a favourable microclimate, while crevices and hollows allow a wide range of species to roost. The rear compartment is perfectly designed for larger species and is large enough for female colonies and their young. The grooved design allows even younger animals to cling safely to the wall. The narrow entrance hole provides sleeping bats with extra protection against predators and disturbances. The box is self-cleaning and maintenance-free and can be installed on trees, masts, towers and flat surfaces.

The special material used in this Roost absorbs ambient moisture and so provides bats which hibernate underground with the conditions they prefer. The internal height and volume have been carefully designed to meet the requirements of hibernating bats. The interior of the block with its variable crosssections and niches is ideally shaped to provide maximum body contact. It is also suited to summer use, providing an ideal daytime roosting place for Natterer's bats, Daubenton's bats, amongst others. Adjustable, rustproof brackets are used to attach the Roost to ceilings and walls and even to the rounded insides of tunnels. Best installed in an undisturbed place free of draughts, where the air is moist.

Summer & Winter Bat Roost 1WQ

This Roost is designed specifically to be fitted on the external wall of a house, barn or other building. Alternatively it can be fitted inside a roof space. The shape and design make it equally attractive to bats as a roost or a nursery. It is also pleasing to the human eye, an important consideration. Easy to attach to most types of walls, it features a special porous coating to help maintain the ideal temperature inside. It requires no maintenance or cleaning and its tough construction will ensure that it helps bats for decades.

This sophisticated roost is designed for the safe hibernation of bats in winter as well as for roosting, forming of colonies and raising of young in summer. The entrance area and the lower part of the front cover have a specially structured surface to allow the bats good hold and grip during their approach and entry to the unit. The interior is designed with different surface textures and varying hanging depths, allowing different species to find ideal hanging places. Made of special weather-resistant, air-permeable and rot-proof light-concrete.
