EXPERIENCE 2021 was a year bookended by the now-familiar shadow of COVID-19. Orientation had to be spread across several weeks because of a small outbreak in Auckland and now it seems we are destined to be behind masks and in limited capacity venues for the foreseeable future. It was a year of disappointment for clubs that saw conferences cancelled and postponed but it was also a year in which we achieved years-long dreams like the opening of Union Kitchen and the continued activation of the SUB basement space. Thank you to all the clubs and especially to our volunteers for all of their hard work in 2021.

Being on the WSU Board this year representing my Pacific community has been an absolute honour. I have developed friendships with our staff, and being a part of the BTS of the events has been a blessing. I have the utmost respect for the team and everyone that is in WSU. A highlight for me would be that being in this role gave me a different perspective or lens to see the students as well as being able to gain new connections.

My highlight of the year was the opening of the new Male Prayer Place and the expansion of the Female Prayer Place for our Muslim tauira! The WSU consulted with the WMSA to find a place that was suitable for the students and it was definitely a huge success.

A specific highlight for me is being privy to conversations following the claims against racism to the University and how to find realistic and implementable solutions. Representing Tauranga on the WSU Board this year has been incredible. My main highlight has been helping with and organising more events for the students on our campus, in particular, the first ever WSU Tauranga Ball which was amazing!
Korerotia mai, ka wareware i ahau, whaturia mai tērā pea ka maumahara au, komokomotia atu au, hai konā au marama pū ai. Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I will understand. I feel that this whakatauki encapsulates my experience on the WSU Board. It was a privilege to be voted on to the Board and to be involved in decision-making processes. I have been privy to many important conversations and learnt a lot from my peers and the WSU office.

I have really enjoyed being on the WSU Board this year. A highlight has been engaging with the wider student community. From the many BBQs and pancake breakfasts, I was able to get to know our students more and also create stronger friendships with my fellow board members. Nōku te whiwhi!
Representing our students as a director this year has been an awesome experience. We have been able to plan fun events like Paint and Wine nights, but also draw attention to the issues our students experience at our University such as racism. The biggest highlight for me has been contributing to the Māori voice on our Board. This was especially important to me following the treaty claim made against the University and the processes that have followed this to make the University a safe and inclusive place

It isn’t often that one gets the opportunity to be a part of such a determined roopu that consists of so many amazingly selfless individuals. Being able to dive into the insights of our tauira, and aid in their journey is both an exciting and humbling endeavour. Aside from the bangers, pancakes and O’Week bus rides, a highlight of mine is being exposed to the conversations and processes surrounding the systemic racism claims to the University. I am eager to see what shape the decisions from these kōrero take in cementing our students’ comfort and safety.
Being on the board this year has helped me to gain insights around the structure of the WSU and how it is run. Through which I’ve been able to identify the passion that our team and the staff have for the well-being of all students and wanting to make their days at University as fun and stress-free as possible. My highlight on the Board has been creating new friendships through fun events and servant leadership.

8/03/21 - 9/04/21 THE ORIENTATION EXPERIENCE Just before our Orientation Experience week was due to begin there was what would come to be known as a mild COVID scare and for a week New Zealand moved to Level 2. We made the difficult decision to take our week-long programme and space it out over the course of a half-trimester. This included all of the mainstay favourites like the Shake Out Super Eater, Shake Out Free Fries, the infamous Meat Pie Mile, and of course, the WSU Keep the Car. The winner of the latter was announced after weeks of entries were collected. This was only possible thanks to the support of some of the best sponsors anyone could ask for and a University that was committed to helping us achieve our vision of a thriving and active campus. It wasn’t the Orientation we planned to run but it was an experience we won’t forget.

10/03/21 CLUBS DAY Even a reshuffled Orientation Experience couldn’t stop our phenomenal network of clubs and Rōpū Māori from making 2021’s Clubs Day a success. We are as committed as ever to the idea that University should be about more than just academic achievement. Our clubs have continued to exemplify the best our University has to offer. Whether it has been passionate people talking about politics, UniQ promoting themes of diversity, acceptance, and sexuality or the Chess Club playing, well, Chess - we wouldn’t have half the fun doing what we do if it wasn’t for them reminding us why we do it in the first place.

01/04/21 THE BIG O The Big O was a cathartic end to everything Orientation related. Taking place on April Fool’s Day we couldn’t resist the temptation to announce that we had booked MultiPlatinum “Rock Gods” Nickelback before their National Tour including Thames, Morrinsville and Te Aroha. Sadly a few students actually believed that and there was some genuine disappointment when they showed up at The Outback Inn to a DJ and beer pong. This was also a chance for the WSU to decompress and have a bit of fun with the students. So much fun in fact, we aren’t sure if any of the photos we got can be used. What we did learn was that VP Māori Areta Ranginui-Charlton was not the Beer Pong Champion she claimed to be, that you can build a crowd by offering free drinks and free food, just not by starting at 8pm, and perhaps most importantly, never let General Manager David West be the hype man for a competition. He took great pride in letting confused students know that if they filled out their details they would go in the draw to win this “Colour TV”. Great time had by all. Let’s do it again next year.

VOICE In 2021 we were reminded that reo tauira is a powerful tool. The WSU and its student leaders were at the forefront of conversations around changing systemic racism that exists at this University and how we can help ensure that recommendations from the taskforce do exactly that. We advocated for students to have better feedback opportunities, and we worked hard to train the next generation of class and divisional reps. We also worked with Pou Tūhono Manager Whetu Taukamo on Tikanga training for those reps and will continue to develop and build those programmes. We stood with other Student Associations on issues that affected us all like COVID-19 Student Hardship. Mostly though, we listened to what you were saying and started to put in place the building blocks for the next five years of success.

14/07/21 CLUBS DAY Unlike its A Trimester equivalent, the Re-O’Week Clubs Day in the WSU Basement went exactly according to plan with over 500 students flowing through the space, getting food, talking to our Clubs and Rōpū Māori. This is the vision we had for the space when we first started to develop it and it was so good to see it being used.

1/07/21 UNION KITCHEN OPENING One of the most exciting things we did this year was open what we are branding “Union Kitchen.” For years we have been working toward a kitchen that could give us the opportunity to make a real difference and finally, in July, the council signed off compliance and told us we could use the space. So we opened it up for some celebratory quesadillas. The same kitchen then became a central focal point through evening events, hosted Re-O’Week activities, and in the future will be the home of our $3-$5 lunch programmes for students who want cheaper, no fuss lunches.

There is a reason that we constantly say Student Support is at the heart of everything we do. It is unquestionably the reason we exist in the first place and while it is easy to look at the last two years as exceptional circumstances for student hardship and support, the reality is every year has challenges that need to be overcome for our University tauira. What makes us different is that we have a team that knows what it is like to be students. We know the disappointment and the apprehension that came with the initial lockdown last year and the anxiety that came with returning to campus this year. It is inescapable that life has become more challenging for our tauira in 2021. COVID-19 has disrupted studies, transport, food supply chains, and crucially employment opportunities for students. This year we chose to separate simple inquiries out from actual case data but that doesn’t tell the full story. This was a tough year for students but we will continue to bounce back.
