Meat Pearls

IN VITRO MEAT HONEST FROM THE LAB

As the planet’s population speeds towards 9 billion, it’s becoming impossible to continue consuming meat like we do today. In vitro meat, grown in bioreactors from animal cells, could be a sustainable and humane alternative to raising a whole animal from birth to slaughter. Meat pearls (without blood vessels, nerves, organs or bones) are meltingly tender and softer than the finest meat you ever tasted. Drop a few into your salad for a burst of meaty flavor.

GOOGLE NOSE

SNIFFER PUTS YOUR NOSE TO WORK IN THE DIGITAL DOMAIN

We use digital technology to augment our senses, but we rarely realize that some of them are excluded from the process. Smell for example, is hardly articulated in our technological culture, but not anymore with Sniffer! Wear the Google Nose and amplify your sense of smell. Thanks to a smell sensor, which is as good as a dog’s nose, you can identify the faintest fragrances and see the source of the odor on a distance. With Sniffer, the idiom Have one’s nose in the air will assume a whole new meaning!

Over 50.000 people have visited visited the NANO the NANO Supermarkt Supermarket since 2010. since 2010.

WELCOME! A new supermarket is coming to your neighborhood: the nano supermarket makes the impact of nanotechnology on your everyday life tangible. Our shelves are stocked with nano products that could become available in the market between now and the next ten years: Lab-grown meat, an energy belt that converts excess belly fat into electricity, the Google Nose, medicinal softdrinks. Our products are innovative, useful and wonderful, but sometimes also strange or even frightening. But maybe you have never heard of nanotechnology? It is about making things on an atomic or molecular scale; one nanometer is one billionth of a meter. Nanotechnology is an umbrella term for a whole range of different technologies that take place on a scale between 1 and 100 nanometers. Companies and governments are currently investing millions of euros in nanotechnology, because it is generally thought that it will make our lives easier and better.

N A NO RE VOLUTION Do you have products with nanotechnology at home? Yes, you do! Nanotechnology is already used in a variety of consumer products, from day creams to sports socks and from refrigerators to bread bins. Nanoparticles, for instance, provide extra UV-protection in cosmetics or improve the bounce of tennis balls. This is all very convenient, but at the same time there are a lot of things we don’t know about nanotechnology, for example if nanoparticles are 100 % safe and, possibly more important: How will nanotechnology change our everyday life? A wave of nanotechnology is flooding our society, but

yet most people know very little about the impact of this new human achievement. Experts expect nanotechnology to have a huge influence on the way we live, comparable with historical technological developments like digitalization, the industrial revolution, electricity, the printing press, the introduction of the written word, or the beginnings of agriculture thousands of years ago. Nanotechnology radically changes our notion of what is natural. It can make the dreams people have about themselves come true, but it can also lead to products we possibly shouldn’t even want to have.

PUBLIC DEBATE The time is ripe for a public debate about nanotechnology. This discussion is indeed already taking place in newspapers, magazines, science cafés, in the theater and on television, and now also in the specially created NANO Supermarket. Whereas most debates about nanotechnology address our fascination with making things on an incredibly small molecular scale or the safety of nanoparticles, the NANO Supermarket tries to make the transformative influence of nanotechnology on mankind and society tangible and recognizable. We have chosen the supermarket as our stage instead of a traditional exhibition space, because a supermarket is both an everyday and a technological environment. Because of our frequent visits to the supermarket, we have come to view it as a normal or even boring place, but essentially it is a very futuristic phenomenon. Imagine what would happen if we put a randomly chosen person from the Middle Ages inside a contemporary

supermarket: he or she would have very little understanding of the products on the shelves. Coke bottles? Body lotion? Energy bars? Milk cartons? Light products enriched with vitamins? Instant soup? Pregnancy tests? The supermarket is a place where new habits, lifestyles and technologies are made commonplace. Therefore it is the perfect location to explore our nano future.

IS E VERY THING IN THE N A NO SU PERM ARK E T ‘RE AL’? The great majority of the products on our shelves are still in a theoretical phase. Young designers and technologists from six different countries submitted them in response to our open call for nano product visions. A panel of leading professors of nanotechnology, designers, artists, philosophers and technical experts judged the submissions. The selection was made on the basis of originality, quality of design, technological feasibility, social implications and to what extent the product might promote discussion.

CON CEIVABLE F UTURE We, in the NANO Supermarket, are somewhat looking into a crystal ball. Because we can look only a couple of years ahead and our products are based on a technology that is actually being developed today. Will that Energy Belt that allows you to charge your cellphone with your own tummy fat ever be realized? Will we be able to smell digital information? Will we all walk around with a Twitter implant? It should not be taken for granted that the products on our shelves will actually be realized. We should interpret them as explorations of a possible future and not an inevitable one. The products in the NANO supermarket haven’t been designed to predict the future. They serve as something to hold onto in the here and now and can help us to determine what kind of nano future we really want.

Koert van Mensvoort Creative director

Only the most exclusive and exciting products are presented in the NANO supermarket. You shouldn’t expect a complete survey, but a compact collection of personal product views. Strict attention is paid to the technological basis of our products. There are more than enough tall stories about nanotechnology going around, and we feel no urge to add to them. That’s why all the products you find on our shelves have a feasibility label. This gives an indication when the product might be technically realized and lists which nanotechnology is used in the product.

MARROW EGG

TASTY BROTH FROM GRANDMOTHERS’ 3D PRINTER

Is it a sea-urchin or a squeezed golf-ball? No, this is the marrow-egg, fresh from the 3D printer in your kitchen. CATAD’OR

The allergy sensitive cutlery

Cultivate your pasta

PastaMarine copies the biological process of something growing, understanding the lives of bacteria and protein on the nano scale. Thanks to water, the silk proteins interact and create a surface. A high proteic food that does’t need a lot of resources to develop.

BIOPHILIA

THE NEXT BEST THING TO THE WOMB

As the world’s population ages and lifestyle diseases increase, we face a growing shortage of donor hearts. With Organ Crafting, silkworms are genetically re-programmed to weave heart-shaped silk scaffolds instead of cocoons. Seeded with cells from the patient’s own heart, these scaffolds grow into a replacement organ with no risk of rejection. Once the biodegradable silk dissolves, the new heart is ready to save a life.

Hydrating Skin

An increasing number of people suffer from food allergies, which force them to constantly scan food packages for allergen information that is often unclear, lacking or even false. The Catad’Or cutlery detects proteins in your food that cause the allergic reaction. When it touches a food containing an allergen it reacts like the human skin. So instead of you getting an allergic reaction, your cutlery will get it for you!

HOST

Merging science and religion

Host is a collaboration bet ween science and religion. The biological reaction of the yeast inside with edible ink in a liquid mixture helps to understand the religious meaning of the Host. The process of eating the card (and actually hosting some living organism) makes the metaphor of eating Christ’s body more evident and perceptible by our senses, through sight and taste. When it comes to microbes, big things come from small packages.

HONEST EGGS

EVERY EGG TELLS A STORY

LATRO

THE LIVING LAMP Do away with dishonest health claims for eggs and uncertain promises of organic, free-range hens. With eggshells that change color according to hormones, medicines, and nutrients, Honest Egg tells you the truth about your food. The color of each egg provides information on animal welfare, as well as how healthy the egg is for you. Was your chicken happy? Is the egg rich in vitamins and wholesome fats? For ethical eaters, Honest Egg takes the guesswork out of shopping.

People are increasingly aware of environmental issues but often do not know how to make better choices. The Latro lamp makes the better choice easy, by using energy-supplying algae that are confined in a uniquely shaped glass container: odourless, easy and environmentally friendly. All you need to do is hang the lamp in a sunny spot so that the algae can collect energy, blow in the bulb once a month to provide the algae with CO2 and refill with water once every six months. After dark, the lamp will automatically light up. Be the first to have a living lamp in the house!
