2016 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

G

rand Prix Season Singapore is almost upon us once again, as Singapore welcomes visitors to a non-stop celebration: blockbuster concerts, glitzy parties and a dazzling array of cultural and entertainment options – and not forgetting the Lion City’s world-renowned gastronomic delights. And then there is the race itself. This year marks the ninth running of the FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX. The world’s first night race proved a sensation when the inaugural Singapore FORMULA 1 race was run in 2008, and today it remains a unique and much anticipated highlight on the race calendar. As a street circuit, Singapore presents drivers with a range of difficulties. For one thing, mastering the Marina Bay Street Circuit and keeping off the walls that line almost all of its 5km is no easy achievement – in fact, it’s a Monaco-like challenge. Factor in the added difficulty of the heat and humidity, as well as the glare from the artificial

lights that illuminate the track, and you’ve got a challenging and unique set of circumstances – there’s nothing quite like the Singapore track on the entire 21-race World Drivers’ Championship calendar. Not that night-time visibility for the drivers is in fact an issue: while many thought it would simply not be possible to safely hold a race for FORMULA 1 openwheelers at night, the stateof-the-art lighting technology employed in Singapore has indeed shown itself capable of replicating daylight on the circuit after hours. Statistically, one driver seems to have adjusted to the set of challenges posed by night racing at Singapore more effectively than the others. That driver is Sebastian Vettel, who has won four of the eight FORMULA 1 GPs held here so far. Impressively, the Ferrari ace’s tally of Singapore wins is twice that of the only

other drivers to win here, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. Vettel won in sensational circumstances here last year, leaving the dominant Mercedes duo of Hamilton and Nico Roberg for dead, his only challenge coming from Daniel Ricciardo. Ricciardo has fond memories of Singapore, and as a circuit that seems to suit his Red Bull machine, he’ll be looking to make the most of it. That’s especially so given that Singapore is like a second home race for the Australian. Not only is it our closest neighbouring FORMULA 1 race, but for Dan’s home-town fans in Perth, it’s actually an easier trip than trekking across Australia to catch the race in Melbourne. That’s another aspect that makes the Singapore experience so special: you’ll be far from the only Aussie in the stands cheering on our Dan!

Tickets to the 2016 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX start from $78 (Friday Zone 4 Walkabout Ticket). Book now at www.singaporegp.sg or contact your local travel agent.
