GOT GAY-TENTION DEFICIT DISORDER?

PHOTOS COURTESY OF YOUTUBE (Calum McSwiggan), MOVIEPILOT (Alexander Skarsgård)

From the hot topics to the hot messes, here’s what you may have missed last week.

PRIDE QUEEN Hillary Clinton showed up for the LGBT community at New York City Pride, in more ways than one. Clinton made waves last Sunday when unannounced, she joined marchers at New York City’s Pride March. “I saw her and was completely dumbfounded,” Kelsey Roberts told The New York Times. Joined by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and Rev. Al Sharpton, she shook the hands of onlookers and waved to the crowds. While she did not speak at the March, she addressed the crowd at the Dance on the Pier via video segment. Brad Goreski introduced her to the crowd’s screams. “I never thought I would be the opening act for Fergie,” she began. Go to nextmagazine.com to watch the video clip. HE SAID, HE SAID Calum McSwiggan is still claiming his story about being attacked last Sunday night in West Hollywood is true, and he took to Facebook to write a lengthy post about the alleged attack. We chatted briefly with Damien Nichols, a Los Angeles LGBT community member who provided a detailed account about what 12 JULY 06, 2016

may have really happened on Sunday evening with Calum McSwiggan. “We met up with Calum at the Abbey. He was completely wasted, by himself. He had his pants down and buttless underwear on. we approached him to hang out, because, how often do you see that.” Go to nextmagazine.com to read the rest of his account. THE WORST The hashtag #HeterosexualPrideDay trended on Twitter last week. We aren’t sure how it got started, but the results are either intense bigotry tweeted out by conservative types or hilarious responses from our own LGBT community and allies responding with humor and clarity. Our favorite? “To celebrate #HeterosexualPrideDay i’m giving out free hand jobs to every straight guy who aggressively confronts me on the street today,” tweeted out by @ NOTCHRISTYLER. STOP THE HATE Lady Gaga, Jane Fonda, Caitlyn Jenner, and Sofia Vergara are just a few of the celebrities in a memorial video for the 49 victims of Orlando produced by the

Human Rights Campaign. One by the one, the celebrities dressed in black say the names of the 49 people who lost their lives with short bios describing these people’s lives and loves. Go to nextmagazine.com to watch the touching tribute. INCREDIBLE GAY SEX “You just have to embrace it,” Alexander Skarsgård told Pride Source of filming his two gay sex scenes on True Blood, before going on to explain his attitude going into his first, with fellow straight actor Theo Alexander, who played Talbot on the show. “Look at the scene,” he recalled telling Alexander. “It’s this nemesis and he comes in and then it gets seductive and you think they’re gonna make love and it gets into that and then suddenly my character stabs him in the back and he explodes. In two minutes, look at this emotional rollercoaster we’re taking the audience on. If we commit to this, it’s going to be an amazing scene and we’re going to be very happy with it forever. If we hold back, that’s when it gets awkward.”

Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, the show’s gay-favorite stars, discuss the franchise’s latest effort, a full-fledged film

It

BY JEREMY KINSER

’s comforting to know that even with all the unrest in the world today, some things never change. Take the unshakeable bond between delusional PR maven Edina Monsoon and her boozy bestie Patsy Stone, for instance, portrayed by Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, respectively. The two fashion-obsessed party girls of a certain age are, of course, the anti-heroines of Absolutely Fabulous, the beloved British comedy series that has garnered a devoted following on both sides of the Atlantic since its debut in 1992. Now they’re back in Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, a glossy big-screen comic adventure that finds the ladies on the lam after they’re convinced Edina has killed super model Kate Moss. “We owe the gay community a huge deal,” Saunders says of the show’s predominantly queer fan base. “They helped make the show popular and we love having them as fans.” The film adaptation is filled with all the frantic energy, politically incorrect humor and outlandish drag queens that made the series such a fervently worshipped hit with gay audiences. Gay men are equally indebted to the two women, not only for the years of raucous laughs they’ve provided but also for the drag and Halloween costume inspiration. “I think if you’re a boy, it’s very easy to dress up as Patsy,” Lumley offers. “You just get your good yellow wig on and lovely red lips. Most 16 JULY 06, 2016

men have very good legs, much better than mine, so men’s beautiful legs showing in good stockings and nice high heels, a glass of Bolly, a cigarette, dark shades on, they’re there.” Part of the appeal is also that the two lead characters never change or learn lessons. “We just get older,” Saunders says. “Edina gets older and fatter. Patsy doesn’t change at all. She’s sort of embalmed and remains exactly the same.” Along with just about everyone who’s ever had a speaking part in the series, including Julia Sawalha as Eddy’s disapproving daughter and June Whitfield as her mischievous mother, the movie is rife with celebrity cameos, including

WHAT’SNEXT Joan Collins, Rebel Wilson, Barry Humphries as “Dame Edna” and Jon Hamm, who it’s revealed was seduced by Patsy as a well-endowed teen. (Though you won’t be seeing Harry Styles, Kim Kardashian or Benedict Cumberbatch.) “We just said we’re having a party, will you come and be in it?” Saunders remembers. “Lots of people were incredibly generous.” Although the series has been resurrected numerous times over the years, fans have long clamored for a big-screen version. Saunders says it was her costar who finally convinced her to write a feature-length screenplay. She remembers Lumley coaxing her with, “You must write it, darling. Otherwise we will all be dead and we won’t have made the film.” Of course, the climate for politically incorrect humor has changed a great deal since AbFab debuted and word policing is now the norm. Saunders notes that she was forced to take this into account when writing the screenplay. “People are much more ready to be offended these days,” she readily admits. “If you write a movie you have lawyers telling you who you can offend and who’s going to sue you and who won’t. It was quite an issue, I have to say.” Earlier this year, comedian Margaret Cho denounced the casting of white actress Janette Tough as the film’s Japanese fashion designer Huki Muki, and a lot of attention has been paid to Patsy being revealed as transgender, a touchy subject

with certain factors of the LGBT communities. Longtime fans, however, aren’t surprised by this news of Patsy, as it’s been hinted at since the early episodes. Asked about it, Lumley relates her character’s backstory matter-of-factly. “Patsy was born a girl and was a woman, but she took some hormones in the ‘60s because she fancied being a man,” she says in her impossibly posh accent. “She went to Morocco with Edina and had a pretty poor operation. [Her penis] withered away and dropped off after a year so she stopped taking the hormones and went back to being a woman.” Ultimately, Saunders doesn’t write with audience acceptance in mind. “I write it to amuse Joanna, really,” she admits with a laugh. “If you write it for too many audiences in mind, you’d die under the pressure. I basically write what I think will be funny. I hoped that people could watch the film not having seen the series and still enjoy it but also satisfy people who knew the series extremely well.” In case fans are worried that this will indeed be the last time we see the ladies, Saunders is once again ready to do her co-star’s bidding. “Joanna keeps telling me there’s going to be a sequel, so there’s going to be a sequel,” says Saunders. Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie opens in theaters July 22. JULY 06, 2016 17

Dylan Monroe, I loved you from the very first moment I saw you. You were the most beautiful creature I’d ever seen. You only got more beautiful as you grew from the boy I once met to a girl who’s beauty could stop anyone in their tracks. Girl you put me to shame. I’ve loved every moment of your existence here on earth. I will miss you so deeply, you’re not lost or forgotten my love, I’ll see you on the other side. - Eden Muse

Our pride comes in many shapes, sizes, colors and hues. BY ALEXANDER KACALA

T

here was no more important moment to honor our pride than this year. Last year’s Pride we had a lot to celebrate with the passing of marriage equality, but that’s nothing. It’s quite easy to celebrate our victories, but much more important to rally for love in the wake of so much disaster. And we did. An incredible energy filled the air last weekend that proves love will conquer fear, love will conquer adversity, and above all - love will conquer hate. Ostentatiously, obnoxiously and overtly, we rallied for love. To see to it that girls or boys or gender non-conforming youth will not feel timid going into this world. That they will be empowered to be exactly who they are meant to be and live authentic lives. The sea of faces in the march were as diverse as the rainbow our LGBT community uses as our symbol. We round-up 100 photographs that show that pride. From rich blue skies to drag queens galore, from strong allies to stronger trade, we display our pride - one fabulous frame at a time.

BE A BETTER TOP, BE A BETTER BOTTOM BY DAN WELDEN

10 ways to become better in bed, whichever position you prefer.

JULY 06, 2016 29

BE A BETTER TOP Five ways to become a bottom’s dream lover.

N

o one likes a lazy top, but being a bottom’s dream lover takes a lot of work—and it exerts a lot of strain on some very specific muscles. Here are five ways you can improve your performance.

Firm up your glutes: Glute bridges will have you bucking like a bull in no time. To begin, lie on your back with knees bent, placing your hands flat on the ground next to your body. Lift your hips off the ground while pushing from your heels, keeping your back straight. When you’ve formed a 45-degree angle, you should look like a sideways triangle. Contract your glutes and hold for a second, then return to the starting position and repeat four to five sets until failure. If you find this exercise too easy, perform the movement while holding a barbell across your pelvis—or, if you really want to up the intensity, have someone positioned on your lap. Stamina is key: Nothing is more frustrating than a lover who has to take a break to catch his breath in the middle of passionate lovemaking. Prevent this by integrating some intense cardio into your workouts. I recommend the rowing machine for a full-body cardio exercise, which is essential for the bedroom. Aim to do an intense session for 10 to 15 minutes, three to four times a week. Strengthen your chest and triceps: You may not realize how important a strong chest and triceps are until you can no longer hold yourself up while thrusting. Save yourself that embarrassment by doing five sets of push-ups until failure three days a week, plus three days weekly of planks on your hands instead of your elbows. Hold your plank for at least a minute, repeating five times with a 30 to 60 second break between each set. I recommend asking a trainer to check your form to make sure you’re not sagging or arching. Build up your back: It’s so hot to be lifted up mid-sex and moved into new positions. However, without a strong back the transition could be sloppy or a total flop. Pull-ups and bent-over barbell rows are great exercises to rectify this. Complete five sets of pull-ups until failure, keeping them slow and controlled; your goal should be to complete a minimum of 10 pull-ups each set. Bent-over barbell rows are also great for strengthening your entire back. I prefer to grab the barbell underhand, standing upright with a slight bend in the knees, then bend at the hips while keeping my back straight; you should end with your upper body parallel with the ground. Bring the barbell to your stomach while keeping your elbows to your sides instead of flared out. Return the bar to the starting position and repeat, completing four to five sets with 10 to 15 reps per set. Be flexible: Do your stretches! The bottom can’t be the only flexible one or else you’re closing yourself off to a plethora of “untapped” positions. Consider yoga a few times a week to help with your Kama Sutra journey.

FITNESS BE A BETTER BOTTOM Five ways to help you work your assets.

C

alling all lazy bottoms! You know who you are. THOT’s always on their back with their legs spread, expecting a dominant top to do all the work. Baby maybe got that back, but don’t just lie on it. Here are five ways to help you learn how to work your assets.

Goblet Squats with Static Hold: You may already know this, which is why you just lay there, being on top of your stallion takes a lot of leg work. You also don’t want to spend all your time bouncing and may need to hold the squat position during an intense make-out session. The goblet squats w/ static hold will help you become a pro at this. To perform this exercise, hold a dumbbell or kettlebell like a goblet. Keep it close to your chest with your elbows slightly flared out. As you squat down, you should stay as upright as possible and your elbows should hit mid-thigh at the bottom of the movement. At the bottom of the movement you will then hold the position for 10 seconds before rising back to the starting position. You repeat the movement five times to complete set one. Your goal should be four to five sets total. Riding the Bull: This is a stability ball exercise. You begin by straddling the ball with your feet firmly planted on both sides. You will then start thrusting your hips back and forth while maintaining an upright position as if you were sliding back and forth on your lover’s pelvis (which is the point of the movement because this is what you’ll be doing in bed). You’ll perform this back and forth trusting motion for one to two minutes or until failure, whichever comes (no pun intended) first. I would suggest practicing this movement in an open area in case you fall off the ball. Kegles: These are not just an exercise for girls, even boys should do them. Start by contracting your butthole. Hold for 10 to 20 seconds, then release. Repeat this movement 20 times, then rest. You should complete four to five sets of this movement. This is not your typical exercise and I recommend doing this exercise several times throughout the day for maximum results. Your partner will thank you! Banded Side Step: This is to tighten your cheeks up for those times you’re laying face down while being mounted from behind. To begin, get a resistance band. Depending on the length, place the band around your ankle or knees. While in a semi-squat position, step wide and then bring the legs back together in a controlled movement. Once your legs are back together, step in the opposite direction and bring legs back together in a controlled movement. Perform these movements for one to two minutes and rest. Repeat four to five times. Glute Bridge: This is not just an ass-plumping exercise. This is to get your core, glutes, quads, and hamstrings strong enough to support yourself as you lay on your back on top of your man while having the ability and stamina to move your rear up and down while turning your head and getting your tongue action on with your meaningful onenight stand. Life is a beach IN RIO

You grabbed your banana hammock and hightailed it to Brazil, but now what? Our gay guide to the beaches of Rio will help you get a tan and get laid, just in time for Olympics. BY RUFUS ASHMOUNT

COPA CABANA AT NIGHT

Warning: with so many beautiful men parading around in nothing but their sungas—what we might call Speedos here in the States—it may seem like the entire city of Rio de Janeiro is gay. But it’s not. Stick to the gay beaches and you won’t have to overstress your gaydar.

T

he most convenient and popular gay beach is Farme in Ipanema, near Rua Farme de Amoedo, which is Rio’s version of Santa Monica Boulevard, Christopher Street or the Castro. Look for it near lifeguard station—or posto—number 8. The beach is hard to miss, as it’s clad in rainbow flags. In the summer, this area can be extremely crowded, and on Sundays it’s hard to even walk to the water, so arrive by noon for a good spot. Around New Year’s Eve and during Carnival in February, there are so many umbrellas you can’t even see the sand from above. Once on the beach, seek out Ana, who will rent you a beach chair and an umbrella for about 15 Brazilian Real (about $5). She’ll also keep you hydrated with beers or Caipirinhas FARME IN IPANEMA

RIO DE JANEIRO OVERVIEW

TRAVEL throughout the day. At the moment, she’s one of the few to take credit cards, and she’s the only one offering free Wi-Fi (but you won’t need to waste your time on Grindr here). Cariocas (the Portuguese term for Rio locals) travel to and from the beach in their beach shorts, but once you get to the beach, it’s all about sungas. And forget your towel, as the locals use kangas—what we’d call sarongs. While at the beach you can play volleyball, practice your capoeira dancing, enjoy a swim, indulge in a massage or just soak up the sun. Don’t be afraid to try the delicacies offered up by various beach vendors, and don’t worry, it’s perfectly safe to have a drink with ice. If it’s too crowded for you at Farme, Coqueirão is Rio’s other gay beach destination. Look for the tallest coconut

tree near Posto 9. The area is mixed, so you won’t see as many gays kissing and holding hands, but it’s preferred by several local gays. Another option, in Copacabana, is an area known as Bolsa, which is popular with the bears and the city’s trans community. You’ll find it right across from the iconic Copacabana Palace, the landmark hotel that opened in 1923. After the beach, most people tend to meander down Rua Farme de Amoedo for food and more cocktails at the Tô nem Aí Bar e Restaurante (tonemai.com.br) before taking a disco nap. The area has several places to eat, and it’s sure to become busy again starting around 9 p.m. On Sundays, many head to Rio G Spa (riogspa.com.br) after the beach, which is located right across the street from the Farme gay beach.

After a full day spent on the sand, you’ve still got hours to kill before Rio’s real gay nightlife kicks into gear. Most of the popular gay bars—which won’t fill up before midnight— are situated in Ipanema and Copacabana, but there’s not necessarily a “gay area.” Around 2 a.m. the guys will move towards clubs like Le Boy (leboy.com.br), a popular choice in Copacabana, though dance club The Week (theweek.com.br) in Centro attracts even bigger crowds of hot muscled boys. After a day spent soaking up the sun and a night out on the town filled with drinking, dancing, flirting—and hopefully getting lucky—there’s only one surefire way to beat your hangover and feel human again, which means we’ll see you back at the beach.
