THEATER PRODUCER RIKI KANE LARIMER ON TOP OF THE WORLD

When one thinks of New York theater, usually it’s the sold-out productions and celebrity names that come to mind. But ask anyone on the Great White Way who the real heroes are, and they’ll tell you the women who have become influential producers. Most have taken considerable risks to steer little-known productions to appreciative audiences. →

Women today can be found as lead producers in sensations like Hadestown (Mara Isaacs and Dale Franzen) and significant producers in hits like Come from Away (Sue Frost). Like their male counterparts, female producers have faced challenges, the most significant of which is merging commerce and the creative; namely, bringing together that all-important creative team and raising the necessary funds from investors to make this dream come true. One such dynamic producer is Riki Kane Larimer, who hails from the houseware’s world where her company, Metrokane, made the Rabbit Corkscrew and other successful household products. After selling Metrokane, she began a career in theater, where she co-produced the London production of Memphis, followed by On the Town and Gigi on Broadway, the OffBroadway shows of Georgie, Tappin’ Thru Life, Bright Colors Bold Patterns, and The York Theatre productions of Cagney and Enter Laughing. 14 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY / AUGUST 2022
However, it is Cagney which shines as her major theatrical accomplishment in the widely acclaimed production. It starred Robert Creighton, who first appeared at The York Theatre, followed by a sold-out run at the Westside Theater. Cagney was a stunning 15-month success. Currently, Riki is reimagining this incredible show now directed by Tony Award-winner John Rando and choreographed by the award-winning Josh Bergasse scheduled to open in London in May 2023 with the intent of a transfer to The Great White Way. The London production has been renamed Top of The World…The James Cagney Musical and portrays an American icon who was forever loyal to his family. He started first as a vaudeville song-anddance man and became a star for his famous gangster roles. Cagney was also a fighter who stood up to the Hollywood bigwigs and fought for rights of actors which resulted in the founding of the actor’s union known as SAG. Riki is Vice President of the Board of Directors at The York Theatre Company in Manhattan and is a Trustee on the Board of Bay Street Theater in The Hamptons. In addition to her passion for theater, Riki is an avid tennis player, a devoted New York Yankee fan, an addicted Scrabble player, and longtime member of The Friars Club.
We recently met with Riki Kane Larimer, who shared her story with New York Lifestyles. Please give us a brief backstory, Riki. I grew up in Great Neck, NY, and received a degree in journalism from the University of Florida, Gainesville. Shortly after, I enjoyed a budding career as an advertising copywriter before landing as a syndicated newspaper columnist with United Features. My column was called Wordy Gurdy by Tricky Ricky and at its peak was syndicated in 150 newspapers including Newsday, the New York Daily News, the Chicago Tribune and The Dallas Morning News. But I needed a greater challenge and that’s when I started my company, Metrokane. Tell our readers more about Metrokane and how it started? Metrokane specialized in home kitchen items like juicers, pepper mills and tea kettles. I started with the Mighty OJ Juicer which I discovered when traveling in Mexico. Working from my apartment, I was quickly selling to retailers like Crate & Barrel, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus and others. In 1999 Metrokane launched The Rabbit Corkscrew which took off like gangbusters becoming an instant hit across the U.S. We sold to every major retailer large and small. It was my timing that was so right, because back then people were just starting to appreciate wine. During those years I traveled to our factories in Asia frequently with my husband, Bob Larimer. He had sold his business in advertising to join me at Metrokane and together we built the company. We had a spectacular 31-year run. What made you think of becoming a theater producer? My husband passed away soon after Metrokane was sold in 2014. At that point, I decided to get involved in theater through my friend Barbara Freitag, who was co-producer of Memphis in London. The London production of Memphis kicked off my career in theater.
Memphis in London provided a great learning experience for me. It was at the opening night party where I met Steven Levy, proprietor of the Charing Cross Theatre. I held on to his card and called him eight years later to ask if he would consider my show Cagney for his theater. His response was positive, and the opening is now scheduled for May 2023 at his theater. My investment choices are often based on relationships with people who have supported my projects or with people I’ve worked with. For example, I recently invested in the Billy Crystal show, Mr. Saturday Night. Why? It’s partly because my director for Cagney is also the director of the Billy Crystal show. I also happen to be a big fan of Billy and believe the show will be successful. Another example is Funny Girl. Adam Blanchay (one of the coproducers) attended my Cagney workshop in London and is interested in getting involved. Hopefully he will help us to get investors. The decision to choose a project is based upon a combination of how much the material appeals to me and the level of my relationship with the people involved. Now tell us more about your latest, Top of The World: The James Cagney Musical. It was a big hit Off Broadway at the Westside Theater: it ran to a soldout audience for 15 months. It’s the story of the legendary James Cagney and his love-hate relationship with Jack Warner. Warner wanted to him to be a gangster and a thug. Cagney wanted to be a song-and-dance man. My show is the story of how he grew up on the Lower East Side. He loved people and cared passionately about the little guy. His father died when he was young forcing him to find work to help support the family. Cagney always loved to perform, and his mother knew it. She encouraged him. He landed a job on Broadway to great reviews and when Hollywood film producer Jack Warner needed a new actor, he asked who happened to be the hottest on Broadway.

Jimmy Cagney, of course. From then on it was Hollywood and stardom. But it was Jack Warner who presented the real tension in this volatile relationship. The actor portraying Cagney is Bobby Creighton who amazingly looks so much like him. He studied the legendary actor and song-and-dance man with extensive research into capturing his essence. I love this show because it is a compelling story of a great American icon. The music is a combination of original as well as famous George M. Cohan songs. The choreography by Josh Bergasse is incredible featuring amazing ensemble tap dancing. An influential force in my show about Jimmy Cagney is my co-producer, Kate Edelman Johnson. Kate’s father, the late Lew Edelman, wrote and produced 14 Jimmy Cagney movies including White Heat which is very much part of our story. Kate has become a great teammate and a vital part of our show. We hear there are some other new projects in the offing. Can you share them with us? There are a several reading presentations I’ve seen recently that may interest me for the future. One is a new revival of Pal Joey produced by Jeffrey Richards. The other is The Ed Sullivan Show—Toast of the Town I recently saw at a workshop. I may be interested in getting involved because it tells the remarkable story of his career in television; his bumps in the road and how he overcame them. He was a TV pioneer. It reminds me of Cagney because it combines a compelling story of an American legend with great familiar music. There’s also my Irving Berlin show, Cheek to Cheek, which focuses on Berlin’s career in the movies. Directed by Randy Skinner, Cheek to Cheek is a song-and-dance show with a terrific book by Barry Kleinbort. We ran in December 2021, but thanks to COVID, we lost several performances. Now because of great reviews and amazing audience response, I feel compelled to bring it back. We are opening September 5th and running for six weeks at the Theatre at St. Jean’s on Lexington Avenue (between 75th and 76th). Tickets will be available starting in August at The York Theatre Company (yorktheatrecompany.org; 212-935-5820). In addition, I’m looking forward to the opening of a new revival of 42nd Street (only 20 in the cast) directed and choreographed by Randy Skinner. Opening in the Fall at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut (goodspeed.org; 860-873-8668). The lead producer is my pal Richard Winkler and I’m coproducer of this show. Tell us about your association with The York Theatre in Manhattan and Bay Street in The Hamptons. I’m Vice President of the Board of Directors of The York Theatre in Manhattan and a trustee at Bay Street Theater in The Hamptons. At The York we focus on original musicals and revivals of musicals that are less known. We have a great creative team with Jim Morgan as Artistic Director at the helm and Evans Haile as Executive Director. We are in the process of searching for a permanent home for our theater in Manhattan. Our home for 30 years has been on the Upper East Side but now it may be time to relocate to the West Side. Wherever we are, I feel The York truly appreciates my contribution on both the creative and financial levels. As for Bay Street in Sag Harbor, it has also been an important part of my theatrical life. Our Artistic Director, Scott Schwartz, focuses on unique plays during the season and one classical musical at summers end. Tracy Mitchell, our Executive Director, recently raised a substantial sum to purchase property and construct a new theater diagonally across from our current location. We anticipate a 299-seat main theater. In addition, the plan is to construct an adjoining 99-seat developmental theater, The Larimer Theater. The comprehensive new design is magnificent, and I am thrilled to be part of it with my husband’s name as a legacy. Finally, how do you see Broadway in the next five years? It will take some time before Broadway is back 100 percent to where it was. But it will happen. We’re on our way. 16 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY / AUGUST 2022

It wasn’t long ago that award-winning chef and winner of Hell’s Kitchen All Stars Ariel Fox made a life-changing decision to begin embracing a healthier lifestyle. Her determination to combine her talents as a chef and her passion for fresh, seasonal ingredients accented with the recipes of her childhood. The result: Her first cookbook, Spice Kitchen: Healthy Latin & Caribbean Cuisine (Kingston Imperial) to be launched on August 23rd. The lovely Vice President of Culinary for Landry’s, the parent company of Dos Caminos and Del Friscos, where she is Concept Executive Chef emphasized her passion for changing the culinary culture. She wants to provide a healthier approach for those who want to integrate the recipes of their youth into our fitnessobsessed world. It’s also a way to expose children to rich familial history and other cultural heritages. With a foreword by Gordon Ramsay, Spice Kitchen: Healthy Latin & Caribbean Cuisine is filled with pages of creative new recipes that are easy to follow. So, if you’ve not experienced her recipes at Dos Caminos and
Del Friscos, this is undoubtedly a great way to bring it home. The chef shares her decades of knowledge and experience throughout the cookbook, providing helpful suggestions on how the dishes can be adapted to any diet. She even recommends the best ingredients to keep on hand when making Latin and Caribbean cuisine a staple of your kitchen. “I try to buy the cleanest foods possible, and when in doubt, fresh is usually the best. I stay away from poorly processed foods, and most of these ingredients can be found in the grocery store,” she said. She believes it’s essential to eat foods high in nutritional value that can be your first defense in avoiding heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic ailments. Ariel suggests some items are easier to find online or in your local ethnic markets. And today, nothing is more than a click away. Ariel’s culinary philosophy stems back to her teenage years in Northern California, where she spent some time working for the small, family-run Mariquita Farm in Watsonville. Here, the teenager was introduced to sustainable food movement pioneer Alice Waters, a local restaurateur and frequent customer of the San Francisco Farmers Market. Waters sparked Ariel’s profound appreciation for organic agriculture and seasonal food. And this inspired Ariel to enter the California School of Culinary Arts Le Cordon Bleu Le Grand Diplôme Program—the institute’s most comprehensive program in French culinary education. As a result, she’s never lost that passion for fresh, seasonal ingredients—which remains the cornerstone of her celebrated cuisine. Years later, Ariel’s talents landed her in front of worldrenowned chef Gordon Ramsey as a contestant on the sixth season of the hit FOX series, Hell’s Kitchen. After coming in a heartbreaking third place that season, she took that drive with her back into the kitchen, and it paid off ever since! Ariel returned to the competition show—and won! We wanted to know more about the gifted chef who has carved a place in the New York restaurant scene. What inspired you to turn to a career in cooking? I grew up in Santa Cruz, California, in the Monterey Bay, where California farming was all around me. My family also loved to travel, thus experiencing different foods very young. Since my parents both worked late, we often ate dinner at restaurants.

I didn’t realize this at the time, but that was not the norm for most families. So, I had a respect for restaurants that most children didn’t have. But it wasn’t until I started working on an organic farm in high school that I truly fell in love with food. While working there at the source, digging and picking, and eventually selling the produce at the Farmers Market, I understood the magic of food. And of course, my grandmother and mother were both excellent home cooks! Tell us about your first experience in a professional kitchen. My first experience in a real professional kitchen was just out of culinary school, where I landed my first gig at Globe, Venice Beach. It was here that I learned to shuck oysters. This was my very first task, and I did it every day, all day. It was painful, and it was endless. But it taught me so much. I got faster and faster and could do it without breaking the shells. Eventually, I became a master at it! Then I moved on to making pasta daily, bread, and so on. Competing in Hell’s Kitchen must have been challenging. What was the hardest part of being a contestant chef? The hardest part for me was trying to outdo myself while trying to do something I’d never done before. I didn’t play it safe and didn’t second guess myself—especially with other competitors around me. I just tuned them out and stayed on track to focus. My motto: Commit to something and don’t change your mind.

Now that you continue to amaze New Yorkers and visitors with your fabulous dishes at Dos Caminos and Del Friscos tell us what it takes to pull together a winning menu? Whether for a competition or a restaurant, it’s about giving people something balanced but exciting. There must be something comfortable and familiar to keep them grounded. But there also must be something new and different that keeps them intrigued. If you can live on that edge of what people know and what they may have never seen or thought of, you will keep your guests happy and coming back. Eating should feel wild and comfortable all at once! Which recipe in your cookbook do you make the most? It would be breakfast; it’s a meal I enjoy. I enjoy it even more on the weekends when I have enough time to eat with the kids. What’s the one ingredient you would not live without? It’s such a toss-up, but a grain of good flaky sea salt is paramount for me. I can take anything—whether it’s half of an avocado, a slice of Sashimi, anything—I can eat anything with a little bit of flake salt on it and be happy. What is your favorite traditional dish to prepare at home? Pozole’s my favorite. Friends and family come to my house when they hear I’m making my pozole and turn it into pozole parties. I make it in this massive pot—I started making it on the grill in this big, hot pot. You’ve got all these toppings and shredded vegetables—you can put anything you want on it. I love the messiness of it. Everyone grabs a bowl and starts throwing stuff in there, and I like that its family-style. Your first cookbook, Spice Kitchen: Healthy Latin and Caribbean Cuisine, took years to imagine. How does it feel? I’ve been creating all my life from my heritage. I’ve been given some healthier options for enjoying them and still feeling good, clean, and healthy. s travelers are taking to the roads again in near pre-pandemic numbers, one of the most popular destinations is Southampton, Long Island, and one of the most popular places to stay there is Southampton Inn. Giancarlo Delanzzo, the new Executive Chef, who studied his craft in Italy, has elevated the cuisine and dining experience through inspiration from some of the most iconic New York City eateries. The menu selections include mostly locally sourced ingredients. Dede explains, “The fish comes from the docks of Montauk, the meat from western Long Island, many items from local farms, including the heirloom tomatoes.” One of the many new items on the menu is the Jumbo shrimp in aged cognac with pearl vegetable couscous, fried leeks, and creamy shrimp sauce. Another favorite is the pan seared filet mignon pink peppercorn, served with potato and garlic broccolini. →

The numerous vegetarian offerings include the Athena and local beet salads, daily risottos and pastas. Finish the meal with Chef Giancarlo’s own ricotta doughnuts in his caramel, chocolate, and cream dipping sauces for true gustatory indulgence. Along with the attractive menu selections, comes the concept of offering high end cuisine with reasonable price points.
A WELCOMING AMBIANCE
In addition to a staff and kitchen update, Claude’s aesthetics, both inside and out, with new décor, flora, picnic tables, lighting, and the total look of the grounds, combine to create a warm and welcoming ambiance. Heaters and fire pits are available for outdoor dining, leaving ample room for well-spaced table seating for appropriate social distancing. Chef Giancarlo not only brings culinary aplomb to Claude’s, but he also brings vendors he has known, and in collaboration with Dede, he is able to curate the menu based upon the collected preferences of the guests to Southampton Inn over the years. Claude’s is open daily for breakfast 7:00 am to 11:00 am; lunch 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm; weekend brunch 11:00 am to 4:00 pm; and dinner Thursday to Monday 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Claude’s will offer not only their award-winning menu items, but also some live music, and a Pianofest for the Fourth of July featuring music performances and a revised menu with classical music-themed dishes aptly named Beethoven Beef, Porky and Bass, and Debussy desserts. “In its 50-year history,” Dede explains, “Over 75 percent of our leisure guests and corporate groups return annually. The recent food and beverage changes are still evolving to fine tune the expectations of hotel guests and community.” The property offers a plethora of backgrounds for wedding album as well as Instagram photos. In keeping with the 24-year history of the Inn, the events can be tailored to any budget. A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE 50+ YEARS OF SUN, FUN & THRILLS

t all started 50+ years ago with a slide. Today, it has grown to three piers, including two waterparks (and 22 waterslides) and an endless number of rides. This is Morey’s Piers, a Wildwood staple that has made this destination the go-to place for summertime fun.
As co-owner Jack Morey and his brother, Will told us several years ago, the only way to describe Morey’s Piers is that it’s forged by the sand, sea, sunbeams, and American dreams some three generations later. The brothers, feel it is a great joy to see families come to visit summer after summer, making memories that will last a lifetime. Back in 1969, the Morey name was not recognized as it is today. If anything, their business in hotels and motels is what would have been associated with a Morey’s mention, if known at all. But then, brothers Will and Bill Morey noticed something new in modern recreation while at a shopping center in Florida. Taken with the crowd’s reaction to a giant slide, the pair surmised it could be popular at their home in New Jersey. So, after acquiring two strips of beach real estate in North Wildwood the Wipe Out slide was built and became a summer sensation. That was the beginning…
EXPANSION WAS KEY
During the 1970s, several amusement piers were decorating Wildwood’s beachfront. But those Morey upstarts were most likely not considered to be any competition. Expanding the dock around the slide, the Morey brothers added a mix of rides to keep visitors close for extended periods. They appealed to both families and thrill-seekers with offerings for both. Soon the pier, now known as Morey’s Surfside Pier, was the hot ticket in town. And the subsequent purchase of Marine Pier late in 1976 fueled the ambitious growth. Renamed Mariner’s Landing, the second pier was a statement that the Moreys were a force to be reckoned with. In the following decades, the beachfront underwent some changes. Many amusement piers were closed owing to either misfortune or a decrease in popularity. But the Moreys took the leap and invested in roller coasters, a giant Ferris wheel, and more big rides followed. The brothers kept their properties relevant. More rides and success followed. Then in 1998, Will Sr. passed away. His sons Will Jr, and Jack spearheaded the business and continue today. Along the way, Wildwood has become a year-round destination admittedly with the help of the Moreys.

Today, the piers are thriving. Three amusement piers, two beachfront water parks, and six beach blocks boast 18 acres of more than 100 rides and attractions: Surfside Pier, featuring Ocean Oasis Water Park and Beach Club at 25th Ave.; Mariner’s Landing Pier, featuring Raging Waters Water Park at Schellenger Ave.; and Adventure Pier at Spencer Ave. Who would have thought that a little fiberglass slide spotted in a parking lot in Florida would inspire two brothers to enter a business about which they knew absolutely nothing? Fifty+ years later, they’ve added more bells and whistles but remain true to their mission: to provide a spectacular family recreational experience in an exceptionally safe, clean, friendly, and unique environment. Now in its third generation, we recently visited Morey’s Piers to become acquainted with Will and Bill’s grandkids. New York Lifestyles caught up with them recently to find out what’s happening at Morey’s Piers.

We sat down with the newest generation to find out about the past and what they see for the future. How many days do you recommend families need to experience what Morey’s Piers is all about? Kyle Morey: It depends on what they’re looking for, but I would say 3 to 3.5 days would be enough to really experience most of what we have to offer. You could certainly ride all the rides much faster than that, but to really experience Ocean Oasis and Raging Waters for example, it would be better to spend a day at each to be able to spend some time lounging at Stubborn Brothers overlooking the ocean with a frozen drink as well as to experience the newly renovated and expanded deck at PigDog with their Trash Can Nachos and MOAB Bloody Mary.
Why do you think visitors return year after year? Will B. Morey: We’d be silly to think that people aren’t coming to the Shore to go to the beach. The beach is the main draw, but our water parks offer an alternative to just going to the beach everyday (did I mention the cabanas?) and the piers are a great outdoor night activity for families. It is also extremely generational. People have fond memories of vacationing at the beach and spinning around our rides at night. It’s the kind of thing that you remember fondly. So fondly that you want your kids to have the same experiences. Are all three Morey’s Piers the same? Jordan Morey: They all have their similarities but certainly have their differences as well. Mariners has the longest season, so it naturally is the most action packed and the most iconic. Surfside is like Mariners but it has a wider footprint, so it spaces itself out more. Adventure Pier is equipped with our extreme rides, so I’d say that’s for our thrill seekers.
How do you see Morey’s Piers in five years? Zack Morey: Fine Tuning. With the exception of Adventure Pier, our marketplace and seasonal nature only provide for so many opportunities for growth. Five years from now I hope that we will have more effectively branded all our different entities into a more overarching entertainment, food/beverage, and hospitality company, with greater brand awareness. Aside from guest experience, I expect that we will continue our efforts to acquire workforce housing and evolve our workplace practices to continue to be an attractive place for Cape May County residents to develop careers with us.

CINDY ALTER
THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR THIS TALENTED MUSICIAN By Patricia Canole | Photography by Neil J. Tandy
For Cindy Alter, the legendary South African musician who shot to global fame in the ‘80s and ‘90s, she’ll always tell you that it was “music that chose her.” Born into a musical family, it was only natural for this 10-year-old to pick up a guitar and start writing songs. Eventually, she joined a local band playing everything from Grand Funk to Led Zeppelin. The following years were spent touring South Africa, opening for various acts, until 1977. Then, Cindy found herself auditioning for an all-girl band and was suddenly catapulted into the world of pop stardom, constant touring and recording, playing huge concert arenas in South Africa and Europe. This was the beginning of her band, Clout. APPLAUSE & AWARDS The band she spearheaded sold over ten million albums worldwide and garnered gold records and SARIE Awards (South Africa’s equivalent to the Grammy). It also paved the way for Clout to become number one across Europe and South Africa, number two in the UK, and even made inroads into the hot US market, making Billboard’s Top 100 with their signature “Substitute.” For the next four years, Clout toured Europe sharing the stage with top recording artists of the time: The Police, Supertramp, Dire Straits, Blondie, and Gloria Gaynor, to name a few. Cindy continued writing songs, two of which were successfully recorded by Clout. However, her desire and effort to contribute more were met with an indifference which marked the start of the band’s painful struggle to secure royalties from their management and record companies. This and personal struggles took a toll, and after four incredible years on the road, Clout disbanded. It didn’t stop Cindy. She joined forces with local musicians and formed another band, Cyndicate. Her mission was to write and record original material. And although she was in the driver’s seat and traveled to the US to record, she knew it was time to take a personal break to reassess her life and goals. With music in her DNA, it didn’t take long for this singer to start up yet another band, which evolved into Zia, during the politically-charged time in South Africa. The band was multi-racial playing pop/rock songs. Zia had a few radio hits (most written by Cindy) and toured the country, then broke into France opening for The Bee Gees. They were offered the opening act on The Bee Gees US tour. TIME TO MOVE ON It seemed like this band too was doomed to fail due to bad management and no record company support. Cindy decided to move on, fueled by a life-long desire of living in LA. There, she found fulfillment stretching her musical abilities beyond her wildest dreams, co-producing, writing, and independently releasing two solo CDs, Silver Moon and Dark Heart. In addition, Cindy became active in the local songwriter community, playing the famous clubs. In 2002, Cindy was approached by a South African agent who suggested she reunite with Clout. She thought that after 20 years apart, it would be good karma for the band to play together in a relaxed atmosphere. Two months before her departure to South Africa, Cindy did a short tour in Nashville and was even inspired to move to Music City. But life threw her a curveball with a diagnosis of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. She was admitted to hospital immediately for intense chemotherapy treatments. It was just the beginning of the long road back to health, and after undergoing a stem cell bone marrow transplant in California, Cindy felt strong enough to make new plans. For most of this time, Cindy spent time in and out of hospital. However, it never crushed her spirit or her passion for music; it only enhanced her desire to continue with music. Her guitar was always with her, and the songs flowed. A few shows here and there during treatment kept her soul alive and strong, and when she felt renewed and revitalized, Cindy decided to move back to South Africa, reunite with Clout, and do the shows she was meant to do a year before. Also, returning to her roots felt like an integral part of the healing process. Leaving LA was heartbreaking for Cindy. She left a marriage, her sister, niece, and many friends. Then, in 2005 Clout recorded a new CD and toured South Africa. We recently caught up with Cindy in Nashville, who gave us a more insightful look into her life. Here’s what we discovered. Who/what inspired you to be a part of the music industry? I grew up with music around me. My mother was a piano teacher, and my dad played the ukulele and harmonica. We had tons of 78 records. Music was always playing in the house and in our housekeeper’s room, where I discovered a love for African music. So, music became my muse when I was a young child. What is the story behind your band’s name, Clout? The word “clout” has a few meanings: “She’s got clout” means she’s got power. In South Africa, people would often say, “I’ll give you a clout,” which meant I would slap you. Do you have favorite musicians you most admire? I have admired many musicians in my years of loving music, and I swear, I could not choose just one. I look at people like Bonnie Raitt, her longevity in the industry; Patti Smith, her quirky style; Sting, a consummate musician; songwriter. Then there are Jackson Brown, Vince Gill, and Ann Wilson from Heart. The list goes on. How do you manage working gigs into the early hours? I think it’s just years of doing something over and over; it gets to be a ritual, a usual way of life. I always keep fit, I try to sleep at least 9 or 10 hours a day when I’m on tour, and as I say, it’s my body clock, which is used to this way of life. I struggle to sleep when I’m not working. What is the biggest problem you have encountered in this journey? I have definitely “suffered for my art,” I’ve always just had enough money to go round, never more. So, I guess giving yourself over so completely to your love of something means giving up some things in life. If you measure success in monetary value, has Cindy been successful? No. But if you measure it in other ways, I say she has been remarkably successful. She has sustained a career for over 45 years, still singing, writing, producing, doing what she loves, and following her passion. I guess to me, that is a success. If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be? I would get rid of auto-tune! Of course, if you can’t sing in tune, you shouldn’t be faking it, but things have changed. Today, some singers get the proper marketing, and boom—they’re a star. But, unfortunately, there’s a lot of “fixing it in the mix.” I value true talent, honesty, and purity of voice and instrument. I will be shot for saying this. Tell us about any new recordings. I recently wrote new songs with a fabulous songwriter here in Nashville. I will record one in the next few weeks. I’m feeling different here. I am keen to hear what comes out of my writing now that I’m finally in Nashville. What are your plans for the remainder of 2022? I want to get into my new life in Nashville. I hope it leads me to where I want to be, writing and publishing my music and having other artists record it. I hope to mentor some young artists. I love that. •

TIVIC CLEARUP I don’t want to tally up all my receipts for over-thecounter allergy medications. Let’s just say it’s an investment. I had low expectations about trying something new. “Been there, done that,” I thought to myself. CADILLAC’S KING OF THE JUNGLE HAS ARRIVED By Jenny Peters
It’s been 23 years since the first Cadillac Escalade roared off the assembly line, grabbing a top spot as the best full-size luxury SUV. A far cry from that 1955 pink Cadillac Eldorado that Elvis bought for his mother (and the hundreds of other Cadillacs he purchased for himself, family, and friends, all with massive, low-slung bodies and those famous wings). The 2022 Escalade is a beast, which is evident when you climb behind the wheel of the Sport edition, the top-of-the-line choice designed to roar down the road with nary a care in the world. It’s been the vehicle of choice for lots of famous people, including Adam Sandler, Jennifer Lopez, David Beckham, and Justin Bieber (many of whom have others doing driving) over the years. It is likely to draw in even more with things like the Super Cruise feature that lets the driver unhand the wheel and turn the car over to its semi-autonomous, hands-free steering system. IT’S THE SILHOUETTE The Escalade is a big vehicle, both outside and in. It’s tall enough that even a long-legged driver like me needs the automatic power assist step to comfortably enter this full-size SUV with 22-inch wheels and broad enough to fill the lane. The massive, blacked-out front grille makes a distinct statement about this powerful car’s monster, protecting the 6.2-liter V8 engine that puts out 420 horsepower with style. Add in the four-wheeldrive option, and this turns into a luxury vehicle that can go just about anywhere you want it to. The interior is incredibly comfortable, following the Cadillac tradition that began in 1902 when the marque was established in Detroit and named after its founder, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. Heated leather seats with lumbar control enfold you, are easily adjustable in every direction, and the massive, curved color infotainment touchscreen display puts everything within reach and sight. The rear-view mirror takes a bit of getting used to, as it displays an HD camera view of the street behind the SUV; it’s necessary because the two back rows feature high-backed seats that effectively make using the mirror as you traditionally would pretty much impossible. LUXURY + SPACE As you’d expect from a large vehicle, there is plenty of cargo space, especially when both rows of back seats are folded down. And if you’re inclined to tow a boat or anything else, the Escalade can pull 8,200 pounds behind it. The SUV can hold a gaggle of friends, extended family, your entourage, or even the whole volleyball team—and all the gear. It’s got parking assistance and many safety features, including braking itself when a pedestrian steps in front of the car and alerting you when there’s the possibility of a forward collision. It will keep you in your lane, illuminate the road brilliantly on the darkest night and blast your playlist via the add-on of an AKG Studio Reference 36-speaker audio system. The 2022 Escalade Luxury edition begins at $76,295, the Premium Luxury Edition at $84,895, and the Sport at $87,595. The four-wheeldrive Sport Platinum gets an average of 16 mpg, so be prepared to pay a premium for the gasoline needed to run this king of the urban jungle across the city’s crowded streets. But, no matter what it costs, this is a fun ride that may make you feel like royalty as you roll. JEKYLL ISLAND MIXES HISTORY & NATURAL BEAUTY By Stacey Zable
In 1888, Jekyll Island Club opened in coastal Georgia as an exclusive Gilded Age winter retreat for some of the country’s wealthiest families. William Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, plus the Vanderbilts and Astors were all members of the “Millionaire’s Club,” representing one-sixth of the world’s wealth at that time.
Today, guests to the 5,500 acre-Jekyll Island—a coastal barrier island midway between Jacksonville, Fla., and Savannah, Georgia—experience the same natural beauty that lured these wealthy families more than 130 years ago. Among the island’s accommodations is the 160-room Jekyll Island Club Resort, which includes the Queen Anne-style Clubhouse and three historic Island Cottages. A new addition in 2017, the 40-suite Jekyll Ocean Club, offers a modern beachfront option for guests. A complimentary shuttle runs between the two properties, enabling guests to share amenities. THE CLUBHOUSE A recent $25 million enhancement to the Jekyll Island Club Resort, a National Historic Landmark, mixes vintage and modern touches. The Clubhouse, with its turret and 19th-century-style croquet lawn in front, faces the Jekyll River, where the millionaires would arrive by boat and often in their yachts. (The island was only accessible by boat until 1954.) So, you can imagine these elite families entering the Clubhouse for their formal dinners in the still-stunning Grand Dining Room. The outdoor pool is the same one that the members swam in. And as you sit on the rocking chairs that dot the many wrap-around verandahs, you feel the stress of the outside world evaporate while enveloped by this fantastic place. Accommodation choices for today’s guests include the Clubhouse and the Annex, now called the Wing, where guest rooms can consist of fireplaces and enclosed porches. Three of the former family cottages have been transformed to offer individual guest rooms. Wedding parties and extended family reunions can take over an entire cottage, including the 10-room Cherokee and 13-room Crane Cottage. What was once the island’s condominium housing six units, Sans Souci now offers twenty-four guest rooms. It’s another excellent choice for groups looking to take over an entire space.

Whaling ships once plied the deep harbor, where megayachts moor today and, for a brief time, Sag Harbor was the port of entry for New York. You may remember this mariner’s destination as the non-Hamptony Hampton; now, shops are more gentrified; yet it retains that harbor front, small-town ambiance where narrow, homes on deep lots date back centuries. Newer homes on wooded estates overlook the harbor or a multitude of ponds. When the iconic Sag Harbor cinema—complete with its 1930s red neon sign—was destroyed by fire in 2016, the entire community—including Billy Joel, Julie Andrews and Martin Scorsese—came together to restore it. Best Stay: American Hotel This posh, eight-room colonial “inn” on Main Street dates to 1846 and was reborn by Ted Conklin in 1972. Visitors can watch weekenders stepping off the jitney, parents pushing strollers and old-timers chatting from the narrow front porch, enjoy Happy Hour at the bar. From here, Bay Street Theater and the Sag Harbor Cinema, are footsteps away, as are the best restaurants (downstairs, up the block and around the corner).

Before you arrive at the must-visit, 137-step Montauk Point Lighthouse (George Washington commissioned it)—about 120 miles east of Manhattan—you will pass some of the 5,000-acres of parklands. In Montauk, you can attend performances at the Montauk Playhouse Community Center, go horseback riding at Deep Hollow Ranch, charter fishing and whale watching, golf at Montauk Downs State Park, walk miles of oceanfront beaches on the Atlantic or party at late night clubs. If you book early enough, you can even camp out at Hither Hills State Park. Carl Fisher invested in Montauk, before the 1929 crash: it’s thriving, now. he days of summer are back in full swing. With so many wonderful Hamptons happenings the only thing that will be hard about this perfect season in the sun will be to decide which events you should attend.
Famed artist Eric Demarchelier’s work will be on display at Demarchelier Bistro in Greenport. The exciting new show which opened the being of summer, will be on exhibit throughout the season. It is a tribute to his late brother and photographer, Patrick Demarchelier. Eric’s recent collection of paintings are based on Patrick’s photographs which will be displayed side by side. VILLA ROMA FAMILY FUN IN THE CATSKILLS

any assume that the glory days of the Catskills resorts are history. But they are unaware of all the fun times visitors continue to find—especially at the Villa Roma Resort & Conference Center in Callicoon, NY. The resort continues the long tradition of various athletic and entertainment facilities and activities accented with fun and games as well as an enticing selection of dining option, and a long history of providing great times for generations of families. The resort had a simple beginning, as it was no larger than a quaint boarding house with forty-six hotel rooms, ten cottages, a pool, and two bocce courts. However, it was not until Marty Passante, after seeing the resort’s “For Sale” sign while on a hunting trip in 1969, that the Villa Roma experienced a renaissance. Together with a couple of friends, Marty sold everything they had on Long Island and moved to Callicoon. After a couple of years, Marty became the sole owner, and that’s when Marty’s ideas for Villa Roma began to take shape. PLAY PLENTY Over a few years, Passante added an expansive, welcoming lobby, a couple of buildings significantly increasing the number of rooms, and an indoor sports complex with bowling lanes and racquetball courts. But he didn’t stop there. He added an indoor game complex, including four bocce courts; a ski area; an 18-hole golf course; timeshare units; and a nightclub, the Club Forum, offering great entertainment for up to 800 guests. The resort has continued to add to its list of activities and offerings throughout the years. Enjoy a race around the Go-Kart track, a zip-line flight across the pond, a fun ride on the bumper boats, or a scenic horseback trail ride. (Some activities, such as horseback riding, have an additional fee.) What most characterizes Villa Roma is its non-stop activity. With so much fun, food, and activities, the resort has been likened to “a cruise ship on land.” Activity director, Doc Holiday, and his staff schedule various fun and games for every day of the week. Try your hand at cake decorating, or step up to the challenge of a game of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” Place your bets on your favorite “horse” in Villa Roma’s daily Horse Racing. Or, if you want to place a real wager on a horse, visit Villa Roma’s own Off-Track Betting Parlor. The adjacent Mezzanine Piano Bar offers New York State’s Keno-style game, Quick Draw. And Jackpot Bingo is played nearly every day. Other games and activities scheduled by Doc and his staff include the Left, Right, Center Dice Game (the lucky winner takes home cash!); mini-golf, pool, pickleball, and bocce tournaments; team trivia nights; and more. The collection of outdoor sports and activities will keep you busy. First, cool off in one of Villa Roma’s outdoor pools and hot tubs. Situated on the Gulf of Mexico, Clearwater is widely viewed as the crown jewel of the greater Tampa Bay area. From its sugar-white sands spread over dozens of miles of beach to local festivals and sporting events to the exact sorts of things one would expect from a city with more than 100,000 people, Clearwater is a year-round destination for many. So close to Tampa International and St. Petersburg/Clearwater International Airport alike, Clearwater itself is 20-something miles from Tampa, around 100 miles from Orlando and Kissimmee, and a little over 150 miles from Daytona and Gainesville. It is the sort of destination you can easily pair with a family trip to Disney while still being more than sufficient for a stand-alone journey. STAY
One of the more dynamic places in Clearwater is the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort And Spa. Located just steps from Pier 60 and the Gulf Of Mexico, the Hyatt Regency Clearwater has 287 guest rooms—256 suites—all of which have a kitchenette or full kitchen. Located off Clearwater Beach, the view from the hotel’s 8th-floor pool deck is hard to top. If museums and cultural destinations are your scenes, you will start with the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. It is near to the Clearwater Historical Society’s headquarters, which also houses the Plumb House Museum. Centrally located within the Downtown Clearwater area is The Capitol Theatre, as managed by the team behind Ruth Eckerd Hall. Beyond hosting national tours of top Broadway plays, its 2022 calendar has included Travis Tritt, Van Morrison, Alice Cooper, George Benson, and Diana Krall. The intimate venue initially operated as a vaudeville theater in the 1920s.
Coachman Park, located along the waterfront of downtown Clearwater, is regularly the site of concerts and some of those earlier-mentioned festivals. It is also home to the Clearwater Harbor Marina. Biking and walking trails—also accessible for joggers, runners, skaters, and cyclists—can also be found elsewhere in the city, including the Ream Wilson Clearwater Trail, the Courtney Campbell Trail, the Pinellas Trail, and the Duke Energy Trail. Clearwater’s further unique and breathtaking is how much of the city is on or around the beach. Separated from the mainland of Downtown Clearwater is Caladesi Island State Park. Caladesi Island is primarily accessible by boat or ferry, a pristine barrier island, yet it is also accessible by foot, as it can be walked to via Clearwater Beach Island. The beach of Caladesi Island—which permits boating, kayaking, fishing, snorkeling, and all sorts of other outdoor recreational activities—has regularly been ranked as one of the nation’s top beaches by Stephen Parker Leatherman, “Dr. Beach” himself.

Off-property from the Hyatt Regency, Frenchy’s has multiple locations in Clearwater, each serving its world-famous grouper nuggets. Crabby’s is another open-air local chain famous for its “laid-back seafood.” Jimmy’s Crow’s Nest is a popular spot for cocktails, thanks to its 360-degree rooftop bar, with several sister locations. Caddy’s On The Beach is a beachfront cafe where you can look out at natural beauty while enjoying comforting pub fare. And who better to find it than Mary Fitzgerald, the break-out star of Netflix’s top-watched reality series Selling Sunset. The realtor has become America’s sweetheart as she navigates Los Angeles’ high-end real estate world, not to mention an office full of sharks lurking in the same tank. Thankfully, her time as a New York resident gave her the toughness and moxie to not just survive but thrive. As a result, she and her husband, French model Romain Bonnet, steal every show scene. But the Big Apple has captured her taste, and New York Lifestyles got the first bite. The petite Fitzgerald shared with us her favorite parts of the city and how best to sell. So, grab the blueprints, dear reader. New York City has an entirely different vibe than Los Angeles. So how quickly do you adapt when you return? Oh, very quickly. I’m a chameleon when it comes to visiting different cities. I’ve moved all over and typically adapt to each area very well. What do you like to do when visiting New York City? Do you hit the tourist spots or lie low? I like to do what the locals do. I wouldn’t say I like touristy things. When I ask a friend for recommendations, I’m always looking for a hidden gem that only the locals know about. I like walking the streets and exploring. I don’t want to have a plan–I walk, and if I see something intriguing, I check it out.

You are identified with Los Angeles culture, but do people recognize you as easily here? In Los Angeles, I feel like people are so jaded they don’t say anything when they recognize us. However, with the variety and number of people here, New Yorkers seem more unapologetic when striking up a conversation when they see someone they recognize. Like Los Angeles, New York City prices are climbing after COVID. How do you prepare clients for sticker shock? Most people know what’s going on when they start the process. It’s about getting people’s heads around that the list price is never what you’re going to get it at. The initial offer is a great starting point, but now what will you move up to? You must show them market data and sales history to help them understand that this is what you must do to get a home. What do New York and Los Angeles have in common real estate-wise? A high price per square foot. Both cities also have incredible amounts of condos, but New Yorkers have coops, which I have never seen in Los Angeles, and those can be more complicated than a straight condo sale. Also, both cities hold solid market values, statistics that show why they are a sound investment opportunity. What are the five most important selling points for a home? Curb appeal, neighborhood, market data (land values of other properties in the area), location, and home style. What should or should not be shown when showing a home that someone is living in? Religious items and personal photos are two big ones to avoid when showing a home. One thing you do want to do is de-clutter. The more open, clean, and spacious the flow of the house is, the better. Light is also essential. Open all blinds and windows—open doors to highlight the flow from one room to another. Also, highlight any technology if the home has any Smart installations. It’s all in the details. Turning to Selling Sunset, how has the response been to the new season that premiered in April? It has been amazing. The fans loved it, and the feedback is that it’s our best season yet. It answered many questions and had a bit of a different twist. What is coming up on your calendar this year? Are you shooting another season, or do you have any side projects? Hopefully, we will get the green light to keep filming a new season. Personally, Romain and I are busy, busy, busy! We are flipping our first house in addition to several projects in the works. How would you acclimate a New Yorker to Los Angeles, and what would you recommend they see and do in your city? I suggest they get a car. You can’t walk everywhere in L.A., and there is so much distance between things you want to do. Go to the beach and visit Melrose Place.

FROM INDIAN STREET CART TO THE HEART OF NYC!

onest, a vegetarian Indian restaurant in the heart of Greenwich Village, will quickly become a favorite if you are looking for authentic Indian street fare, accented with Chinese influence, and even a twist of Indian pizza. It’s unassuming, simple, and fresh, with some of the city’s best prices.
Honest has a fantastic back story: it is a large international chain that started in 1968 as an Indian street food cart that reached NYC a few months ago! It’s so authentic and fresh that manager Parth Patel confirms they have no freezer! Rarely have you heard of a restaurant founder still being in the game fifty-something years later? Still, founder Vijay R. Gupta (whom we were lucky enough to meet on our visit) started with a street food cart with a couple of friends in Ahmedabad, India, and then in the ‘70s, moved on to opening restaurants in his homeland. From there, the business grew, with Honest finally hitting the Big Apple in early 2022. (There are several locations already in the tri-state area, including Floral Park, NY, and Edison, NJ.) There is a large photograph of Mr. Gupta on the wall of his quaint and early Bleecker Street restaurant, and in all honesty, he does not appear to be in his seventies! As for the clientele, Gupta was eager to tell us that “We have a strong Indian customer base that we are very grateful to continue serving. On the other hand, the NYC location is our first time stepping into a non-Indian neighborhood. The NYC location is seeing a young crowd, customers looking for something a little different but delicious. Our outdoor patio and the soon-to-be-introduced wine and Indian beer are also a popular draw.” AN EXPERIENCE We enjoyed our visit to Honest and found it to be unlike any other Indian food experience we have had in the past—and not just because it is vegetarian. First, the Honest managers introduced us to the most popular dish, which happens to be the first item on the menu—Bhaji Pav, a Vegetable Curry made with Honest’s signature spices and served with Pav bread baked fresh on the premises. Oddly enough, this semolina-based bread looks like a traditional Parker House roll, but it has a soft texture and slightly sweet taste that is incredibly memorable. We were asked the degree of spiciness we wanted for our order, and the kitchen got our request right; this earned big points. Dishes that blew us away included Dabag (The Beast) Dosa, the chef ’s extraordinary fusion of Dosa with Veggies, Cheese, and Spices. There’s also the Veg Hakka Noodle, which is Stir-Fried Vegetables and Soft Noodles tossed with soy sauce, and Honest’s famous house-made Garlic Szechuan Sauce. Beverage-wise, the Mango, Rose Lassi, and Watermelon Juice are super fresh and perfect for a sizzling summer day. 80 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JUNE 2022
A TOUCH OF CHINA Also setting Honest apart from any other Indian restaurant we’ve visited in NYC is its features of Chinese-influenced selections. We were impressed by the IndoChinese Noodles with Assorted Vegetables—think of having Sichuan-style Vegetable Lo Mein with Indian spices, and you’ll understand this unique crowd-pleasing dish. Mr. Gupta explains his decision to include many Chinese fusion dishes as a direct result of India experienced something similar where Chinese and Indian cuisine melded into its flavor profile. It’s completely different from Chinese American (food) and very popular in India. INDIAN PIZZA: A SWEET TOUCH As if the opportunity of having classic Indian street food and Indo-Chinese dishes was not enough, Honest prides itself on unique Indian pizzas! Gupta explains, “Similar to the melding of Chinese and Indian cuisine the Bhakri Pizza results from 60’s/70’s western influence on Indian street food. Street vendors recreated pizza as they saw it using Indian ingredients and tools. The Bhakri Pizza base has a crispy snap not found in North American pizza, and the tomato sauce is a touch on the sweeter side.” The natural allure of Honest in our minds is years of getting the dishes right and playing around with ingredients while keeping authenticity intact. Says the affable founder, “What is now on the menu are perfected recipes that went through years of fine tuning. We import our family secret spice blends to the USA to maintain the same taste. We also prep daily, and the dishes are cooked to order. We don’t have freezers in our kitchens (except for ice cream), and we use the freshest and highest quality ingredients. MEZCAL TAKES CENTER STAGE TIME TO DRINK THE OTHER SPIRIT FROM MEXICO

f you’ve been out and about this summer, perhaps enjoying cocktails on one of New York’s fabulous rooftop terraces or simply having dinner outside your home, then you’ve probably noticed a Mexican spirit making a big splash on the cocktail scene.
That’s mezcal, the agave-based quaff that is not tequila, the one that the indigenous people of Mexico have been fermenting since before the Spaniards came to their land. The Spanish brought distilling to that place which eventually became known in the USA as “south of the border,” where tequila and mezcal have been enjoyed for generations. Tequila is a mezcal because mezcal is any agavebased liquor, but mezcal isn’t tequila. Both are made from the agave plant’s pina, but tequila must be made from only the blue weber agave (agave tequilana) and is steamed in industrial ovens and distilled in copper pots.
THE SACRED AGAVE
Mezcal can be made from many agave plants, the most common being Espadín, and other main species used include Cupreata, Cenizo, Sierra Negra, and Tobalá. Each species has a different flavor profile, the commonality being mezcal’s traditional smoky notes. That distinct taste comes from how the piña (heart) of those agave plants must be fire-roasted in pits or ovens to be converted to alcohol via distillation in clay pots and copper stills or stainless-steel tanks. Like its cousin tequila, mezcal is aged in oak barrels and has varying levels of aging. You’ll find Joven (aged only 0 to 2 months), Reposado (2 to 12 months), and Anejo (one year or more) ratings for mezcal, with the longer-inoak mezcals yielding up the smoothest tastes. Mezcal is often served in traditional small clay cups and sipped neat in Mexico.
MEZCAL AMARÁS
On a recent visit to Oaxaca, we explored the agave fields and distilleries of Mezcal Amarás, one of the award-winning brands of this fascinating spirit. Growing their 12 species of agave organically, both on their farms and in collaboration with smaller farmers, Amarás produces small-batch special bottlings called Logia from wild agaves like Tobalá and Cenzio, larger distillations of Espadín and Cupreata agaves. Each type of Mezcal Amarás has a distinct flavor profile, partially because of the uniqueness of each agave species used in the spirit and partly because some (particularly the Logia limited-edition line) are handcrafted using traditional and artisanal methods to create the mezcal. Those make for perfectly smooth sipping mezcals, with intense flavors ranging from citrus to herbal, and all with the trademark smokiness that makes mezcal so unique. Those bottles range in price from about $85 to $150. The multiple award-winning Amarás Espadín ($42) is also sippable, full of smoky roundness and cinnamon, or combined with Aperol, Yellow Chartreuse, and lime juice for a tasty cocktail. The Espadín Reposado ($52) spends three months in oak barrels and comes out with a nutty vanilla flavor. At the same time, the Cupreata ($63) is made with 13-year-old agave plants, has notes of pumpkin and spice when tasted neat, and makes for a delicious cocktail when mixed with cucumber water lime juice, and agave nectar. And take it from me, someone who has called tequila “ta-kill-ya” for decades and avoided it at all costs after a couple of bad tangles with it. Mezcal and tequila are very different spirits from the same plant genus. And for those of you who think of mezcal as that Mexican spirit with the worm in the bottle, those gusanos are moth larvae and are only found in about 8% of mezcals these days, for as artisanal, high-end mezcal becomes more and more sought after, the “worm” has disappeared. Hi Mindie, My boyfriend and I have been together for about a year and a half and occasionally talk about our “hypothetical future” together (marriage/living together/kids etc.) The other day we got on the topic of marriage, and he said he would want to be “married” but thinks the government legal documentation is pointless. That upset me; I do not know where he got that idea. But it makes me wonder if he honestly did not know or is just afraid of long-term commitment. What would you do in this situation/how long until they take this seriously, or should you kick them to the curb? Thank you, Danielle G. Dear Danielle G— You are brilliant at having these conversations with your boyfriend now. Many do not broach the subject until much later, only to learn they have two vastly different views of a long-term relationship and commitment. Your boyfriend is not alone; many people opt not to get married. Numerous people instead choose to solidify their bond in other ways, wearing commitment rings, buying a home, raising children, or sharing a joint bank account. There are several reasons for this, and skipping the altar is becoming more common than not today. As the divorce rate continues to climb (it presently sits at 42 percent), I suspect we will see even more opting to forgo traditional marriage and choose the latter. Having said that, if marriage is your goal and something meaningful to you for legal purposes and for what the license means in terms of your life together, I advise you not to concede. Marriage still holds a vital role and meaningful purpose for so many. Marriage has much meaning out of the sentimental spectrum, too: it can enable partners to share health insurance benefits, provide financial security, adhere to religious beliefs, offer a child-rearing foundation, and for some, offer them a layer of legal protection. HOW SHUTDOWN BECAME THE MOTHER OF INVENTION

n March 2020, Dr. Julius Few closed the door on his clinical space and joined most of the country in COVID-19 quarantine. “It was especially stressful because we were told we had to shut down for six weeks, maybe longer,” he recalls. “Then I realized, here was an opportunity to slow down and reflect.” A board-certified plastic surgeon and a prolific navigator of dermatologic research and aesthetics, Few cut short pondering in favor of process, specifically the merging of the anti-aging properties of retinol and the anti-inflammatory benefits of Cannabidiol (CBD). It was a first-of-its-kind approach that would prove effective not only on wrinkles and fine lines but on hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and acne. “My thought was to counteract the negative aspects associated with retinol, such as dryness and irritation, with CBD’s natural healing abilities,” says Few. As a result, their Chicago home office served as the launch pad for what would eventually become the skincare breakthrough Aforé™ CR Emulsion. In a world marketplace where CBD development is pedal to metal with new products hitting the shelves and social media weekly, Few’s formulation is unprecedented, an accomplishment he has no trouble acknowledging. “There’s nothing even remotely close to this,” he states. ATTESTED DEVELOPMENT To optimize his findings during the shutdown, Few collaborated remotely with a chemist he’d worked with in the past; ingredients not on hand were shipped from a lab in California, and he cast himself in the dual role of tester and subject. “The litmus is using my products,” he says, explaining that since his neck is prone to irritation from shaving, it became his primary test run challenge, and he wasn’t disappointed. “The first iteration worked very well; it just needed some fine-tuning,” he notes. After assessing the prototype for effectiveness, feel, aroma, and texture, he red-flagged the scent as too pungent, so round two included tinkering with a few select botanicals to develop an olfactory alternative. Bottom line: The emulsion is now odor-free with only the slightest hint of floral/citrus essence. Another priority for Few at the outset was that the CBD be watersoluble. “Most often, CBD is dissolved in coconut oil or mediumchain triglyceride (MCT) oil, which can clog pores or make skin look oily or dull,” he says. Hence, the object of the formula game was to go water-soluble without compromising effectiveness. Once that box was checked, Few was ready to move ahead. “Overall, the lion’s share of the planning was done during the pandemic,” he recalls. The next hurdle would be a test study, in this case, a six-week clinical trial launched with ten experimental subjects aged 18 to 65. Fast forward hundreds of hours bracketed by stringent regulatory parameters, and you’ll find the payoff was impressive. Few’s initial hypothesis—incubated in “virtual” seclusion—was proven successful. CR Emulsion was well-tolerated across the board, and participants, pleased with the results, described their most marked improvements in the areas of wrinkles, visible pores, skin surface, and dehydration. “We’ve been running follow-ups with the group for more than a year now,” reports Few, and there are no side effects.” THE RIGHT STUFF Whether addressing a roomful of medical professionals about a procedure or product, fielding journalist Q&As, or conversing oneon-one, Julius Few, M.D., captivates naturally with intelligence, humor, and humanity. ERIKA ELLIOTT, EXECUTIVE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF SUMMERSTAGE By Bonnie Comley Summer is here! And that means music and performing arts in our beautiful NYC parks! If you have ever attended one of these events and thought this is the perfect music for this park, you must thank Erika Elliott. Erika Elliott has been the curator for City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage, which has grown exponentially under her leadership. Not only has programming attracted diversity in the audience but Ms. Elliott achieved gender parity back in 2019, meaning she was programming at least as many female bands and artists (or groups that included women) as men. City Parks Foundation is a non-profit created in 1989 to offer free arts, sports, and education programs in over 750 parks in all five boroughs of New York City and dedicated to invigorating and transforming parks into dynamic, vibrant centers of urban life through sports, arts, community building and education programs for all New Yorkers. Their programs—located in hundreds of parks, recreation centers, and public schools across New York City—reach thousands of people each year. As Executive Artistic Director of SummerStage and the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, Erika Elliott programs over one hundred free shows every summer in all five boroughs. She donates her time and talent to the Recording Academy as the elected board of the New York Chapter. She also is a proud Bronx native and serves on the advisory board of the Bronx Music Heritage Center, and Mott Haven Fridge which seeks to ddress food insecurity in the borough. Ms. Elliott manages all this while raising her teenage son! I had a chance to talk to this busy woman about her superpowers. With your experience, you could work in any city. Why NYC? It is such a privilege to be able to bring the best artists to the heart of New York in Central Park and parks around the city and for free. There is an unparalleled energy to the city that is only matched by the incredible diversity. Add to that the character and flavor of each borough, and the legacy of creativity and impact that New York and New Yorkers have made on the world.
SummerStage is committed to gender parity and diversity. Tell us more. I am fortunate enough to work at a mission-based organization that is about making the arts accessible, but I like to think my legacy at the Festival is also about ensuring that it is equitable holding space for and giving a platform to diverse artists, genres, and really representing New York City. SummerStage is a women lead festival, and that is the work of our board and our executive Director Heather Lubov. I learned about the global initiative KEY CHANGE through a conference in Europe. It’s a global initiative to address gender equity in the music industry generally but particularly by asking that Festivals commit to 50/50 parity. I was proud to achieve this in 2019 and have remained committed to this every year since. You book a diverse lineup of music genres. Do you enjoy all you present at the parks? I love what I do, not because I book all my personal favorites (but of course there are some!) but because I get to book for the city and get to present artists that are meaningful to a broad range of New Yorkers, from Colombian to Ghanaian, Opera to Doo Wop and everything in between. You took SummerStage online before the pandemic. Why go online for an organization that is presenting in-person shows and music? We only pivoted once it was clear we were not going to have a live in-person season. As we (and the world) tried to imagine what to do, we decided that continuing to serve the communities we do in real life, and artists was important. As a festival we have very purposefully served communities and in the pandemic; we wanted to continue to connect to those communities. As importantly in this moment we also realized that the artist community that we have relied on and partnered with to perform needed an opportunity to work! And thus, SummerStage Anywhere was born. What are you most proud of accomplishing? Nearly 20 years after joining SummerStage, I think overall it is that I have consistently served the city and its people with joy, presenting a world class festival that is truly inclusive and celebrates the variety of communities that make New York City great. BULLET TRAIN Not yet rated Action, comedy and a Japanese Bullet Train with Brad Pitt aboard as a slightly inept assassin make for perfect summer moviegoing, especially when Deadpool 2 director David Leitch is at the helm. Look for tons of violence, swearing and silly byplay between Pitt (as Ladybug, the assassin) and Sandra Bullock, who plays his handler Maria Beetle, as well as crazy action sequences that will have you gasping and laughing at the same time. Joey King, Michael Shannon, Zazie Beetz and even singer Bad Bunny are along for this wacky train ride that is not for the kids.
THE GRAY MAN PG-13 This deadly serious thriller stars two of Hollywood’s most sought after leading men—Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans—as two CIA agents on opposite sides of a manhunt. Which one is the good guy? That’s the mystery at the heart of this cat-and-mouse adventure that also stars Ana de Armas, Rege-Jean Page, Billy Bob Thornton and Alfre Woodard. Directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, best known for their Avengers and Captain America Marvel flicks. MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU PG Who doesn’t love the Minions? We know we do, and so do kids of all ages, so it’s a cinch that this fifth animated flick starring those goofy heroes will be a hit with everyone. This time we’re in for the back story of Gru, the Minions’ evil (yet lovable) boss, as he sets out at age 12 to become the world’s greatest supervillain. Many of the regular voice actors are along for the ride, including Steve Carell as Gru, Julie Andrews as his mom and Russell Brand as Dr. Nefario, along with newcomers like Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh and Lucy Lawless. PAWS OF FURY: THE LEGEND OF HANK PG Another animated movie with kids in mind, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank is a martial-arts comedy set in the world of dogs (Hank, voiced by Michael Cera) and lots of cats (voiced by Michelle Yeoh, George Takei, Samuel L. Jackson and Ricky Gervais). Even Mel Brooks lends his voice to the fun, and slightly strangely, also the plot of Blazing Saddles, which the story is based upon. How that works as a kids’ movie is a good reason to go to the theater to check this one out! THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER PG-13 Chris Hemsworth as Thor returns to the MCU for his fourth outing in this adventure comedy that keeps the Norse god’s legend going. This time he and his mighty hammer must take on a new threat, Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), a supervillain making his cinematic debut. Will Thor win out? He will if his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and pals Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista) and Groot (Vin Diesel) have anything to say about it. It was a fantastic moment celebrated by artists from all around the world. During an Advertising Industry Opening Reception hosted by HAVAS New York, MvVO ART announced that Chanell Angeli took top honors in AD ART SHOW 2022.
The MvVO ART jury of collectors awarded Chanell Angeli a Specialty Clio in Contemporary Art. A mixed-media artist of Caribbean descent, her work draws on her heritage and interest in the relationship between poetry and visual art to create immersive experiences, exploring themes of the divine feminine and the African Diaspora. Her work is rich in emotional content and intelligence. In addition, Parme Marin and Layla Nami were also named 2022 show winners. Parme Marin creates works of art with leather, hair, and wood, exploring “La Peau” (the skin). Layla Nami’s bold imagery draws inspiration from Persian folktales, medieval tapestries, and illuminated manuscripts. The participating artists have backgrounds in advertising/design or related fields. They are following in the footsteps of famous artists like Andy Warhol, Rene Magritte, and Keith Haring. Historically some artists have leaped, but the barriers persist. MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW throws the doors open for these talented artists with direct connections to the Art World in a celebration of artistic discovery available to all art lovers. It bridges the gap between the Art World and Advertising. “The talent represented in the 2022 selection of 120 artists is extraordinary. REMEMBERING BROOKLYN
It is with pain in our hearts and tears in our eyes that we share with you the terrible news that our precious greyhound Brooklyn has passed away. On Wednesday, he succumbed to osteosarcoma and died in our arms. He was 13 years, 6 months old. After suffering for eight years at the Canidrome, the only legal dog track in China, he deserved so much more. In 2019 he survived bone cancer and then in 2020, a spinal stroke. Sometimes, Brooklyn seemed truly immortal. Born on December 10, 2008 in New South Wales, our small white and fawn boy was a poor racer. So at the age of twenty-one months, he found himself shipped across the ocean to live (and likely be killed) at the worst dog track in the world. No dog ever got out alive from the infamous Yat Yuen Canidrome. Then in 2011, GREY2K USA Worldwide board member Charmaine Settle visited the track and shared his photo, prompting the launch of a successful international campaign to #RescueBrooklyn and #ClosetheCanidrome. The resulting Macau Airlift brought Brooklyn and over 500 of his fellow hounds to waiting adopters across the globe. We were lucky because Brooklyn came home to us. We will always remember our boy’s astounding resilience and most of all, his forgiving nature. ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER ANDY SABIN: CONSERVATIVE CONSERVATIONIST By Bailey Beckett Like “jumbo shrimp,” two words that seem out of place next to each other are conservative and conservationist. Yet they’re the exact terms to describe Andy Sabin who may be changing the modern definition of what it means to be a Republican. Sabin is a highly visible and outspoken East End Republican kingmaker whose Sabin Metal Corporation, the world’s largest, privately-owned precious metal refining company, has earned him a fortune. His Rolodex is a who’s who of America’s most influential leaders. But Sabin reserves his support for climate-minded leaders. For Sabin, the only responsible leaders are those that protect the earth for future generations. Says Sabin, “the climate crisis supersedes everything because without our planet, what else is there?” Sabin is the chairman of Conserve America, a conservative conservation group as well as the Roosevelt Conservation Caucus, a group of 11 Republican senators and 11 Democratic senators who share his values on environmental responsibility. Sabin has hosted countless GOP luminaries in The Hamptons, and observes, “When they come to the East End, they’re amazed at the amount of protected open space. In East Hampton, we’ve been able to designate 38 percent of the town’s open land as permanent conservation. It’s an accomplishment I’m very proud of,” Sabin says. “They’re also impressed to learn what we are doing for the ocean with initiatives like sustainable fishing.” CONSERVE TO PRESERVE Sabin resides in Amagansett year-round with his family. He’s helped fund and develop the East Hampton YMCA and is a co-founder and president of the South Fork Natural History Museum, which funds conservation education. The SOFO Natural History Museum will hold its 33rd Annual Summer Gala Benefit on Saturday, August 6th. The museum has grown from a small nature clubhouse to an acclaimed state-of-the-art museum boasting outstanding nature exhibits and over 270 annual educational programs ranging from environmental stewardship and community outreach to climate change, sustainable energy and marine science.
“One of my favorite things in life is to take young people into the field, to hike in the woods and see the smile on their face when they see the beauty of nature. I’ve been fortunate enough to take over 100 underprivileged kids and their families into the forest and can think of nothing better than inspiring the next generation to save the planet,” Sabin says. Sabin’s environmental expeditions have taken him to hundreds of countries around the globe. Along the way, he’s been involved in the discovery of numerous new species. He has more than 14 bearing his name and Sabin admits to having a particular affinity for reptiles and amphibians, including the Peruvian frog (aka the Sabin Glass Frog), the 7000th identified amphibian species. Most recently, Sabin’s name has also been attached to a dwarf lemur and a new shark species found in Madagascar. All in all, this billionaire who recently celebrated his 75th birthday at New York’s Museum of Natural History says, “I don’t want to be the richest man in the cemetery. I’m on Earth to save lives and the planet.” He adds that if he could choose a single word to define him, it would be compassionate. He explains his philosophy: My favorite saying is every day above ground is a good day. “I give out thousands of bracelets for people to wear as a reminder that when they wake up in the morning, they’re blessed. Just be thankful that you woke up and you’re healthy,” Sabin has put his money where his mouth is, with his philanthropy extending beyond the natural world. Sabin has funded cancer research at Sloan Kettering and underwritten the development of the M.D. Anderson Care Center at the University of Texas. He recently completed a cardiac research center and men’s wellness center at Columbia-Presbyterian. He has also contributed to efforts to provide countless women access to essential healthcare in Kenya and Tanzania. And Sabin says he’s far from finished, “I don’t care if I die poor, just so long as I have done something to save lives and protect the planet.”

When most imagine summer in The Hamptons, visions of rosé-drenched pool parties, tony boutiques, and strolls along the beach come to mind. But any resident or visitor who truly knows The Hamptons knows the arts have always been the heartbeat of the East End. After a pandemic pause, longtime Hamptons resident/artist Steven Colucci is bringing the arts back with the return of the annual Westhampton Beach Project. The two-day free event will return to the Westhampton Beach Great Lawn on July 29th and 30th at 8 pm, highlighting established and emerging performing artists. And as an “accompaniment,” over twenty-five local restaurants and bars will serve the best food and drink The Hamptons offers. One of the highlights of the summer social calendar, the event echoes Colucci’s mission with the Musical and Mime Theater: exposing a younger generation of talent to established performing artists and art forms he has dedicated his life to studying. “I’ve always believed that knowledge of arts brings the ultimate freedom,” says Colucci. “This is my biggest project. I don’t think I will ever do anything greater in my life than to be an artist and promote artists to the community.” Headlining the festivities on the 29th is The Parsons Dance Company, an internationally renowned contemporary American dance company founded by Artistic Director David Parsons and Tony Award-winning lighting designer Howell Binkley. For 35 years, The New York-based company has built an avid following for its energetic, life-affirming modern dance performances.
And lighting up the night on the 30th, Grammy-nominated and Tony Award-winning R&B star Melba Moore. Moore’s extraordinary five-decade-long career highlights include R&B hits and Broadway star turns, including Purlie and Ain’t Misbehavin’. In addition, she made history as the first Black woman to play Fantine n Les Misérables. Finding acts for the event is an arduous process. “It takes about eight months to find the right mix of talent to present here in the Hamptons. “I want the attendees to be wowed by what they see.” He raves about the festival’s headliners: “The Parsons Company’s eclectic musical selection is awe-inspiring, and what better way to enjoy a beautiful summer evening than with the incomparable Melba Moore and her five-octave range?” He also notes the practical value for the emerging performers he brings in, “they’ll be opening for world-class artists and be seen by a who’s who of the Hamptons – that’s more than another credit, it’s a real opportunity.” Born and raised in the South Bronx, Colucci established his reputation over the last 45 years as a celebrated and widely collected painter. The Colucci Musical Mime Theater is the manifestation of his journey in the arts. One that began as he was growing up in the Bronx. “I spent a lot of time in Greenwich Village and went to school there, so I was always around talented people,” he reflects. “I started as a visual artist, but painting and sculpting weren’t enough. I became fascinated with corporal movement and expression.” That fascination led him to Paris, where he studied under the father of modern mime, Étienne Decroux, and worked with the iconic Marcel Marceau. The event is free to the public. t was another great night in New York City. Another fundraiser in the Big Apple, though, was not just another party. It was a special night that would change lives for the better for generations to come. Lifeline New York hosted their benefit dinner at Il Postino Ristorante in New York City.
The dinner benefited children’s hospitals in Serbia, with half of the proceeds also going towards helping Ukrainian refugee children. Lifeline Humanitarian Organization is an international humanitarian organization founded in 1993 in response to the tragic situation in the former Yugoslavia, which was plagued by conflict and sanctions. Lifeline’s mission is to alleviate and relieve the suffering of physically and mentally disabled children, orphans, and the elderly and improve medical facilities throughout the country. Notable attendees included Lifeline New York president David Hryck, Lifeline New York vice-president Susan Gutfreund, Lifeline New York vice-president Cheri Kaufman, Lifeline New York treasurer Peter Pizzino, Lifeline New York executive director Tijana Ibrahimovic. The Crown Princess inspired the work of Lifeline New York in exile with her husband, HRH Crown Prince Alexander. During those trying years, she worked tirelessly to provide humanitarian assistance to Serbia. t was a night to remember. The Viennese Opera Ball was back in the most stylish and sophisticated way in 2022. Filled with beautiful dance performances, fine dining, exquisite clothing, and stunning singing there was no other way to describe it other than magical. The night of pure bliss transcended the great island of Manhattan to a refined and beautiful moment that it had not witnessed in a few years.

Back in a grand way this spring after a long-overdrawn hiatus, the oldest and most prestigious gala outside of Vienna held its annual celebration for the 66th year at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City under the auspices of the U.S. Austrian Chamber of Commerce.
AN UNFORGETTABLE EVENING The gala benefited the music therapy program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with support from Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research. The Gala chair for the evening was philanthropist Jean Shafiroff. The vice chairs were Sylvia Hemingway and Peter Thomas Roth. A special thank you goes to Ernst Woller, President of the Vienna Provincial Parliament, and the continuous support of the City of Vienna. Top opera stars Carolina López Moreno, Iurii Samoilov, Johanna Will, Matthew White, and Donata D’Annunzio Lombardi performed at the 66th Viennese Opera Ball. Iurii Samoilov also performed a moving tribute to his homeland Ukraine, singing a folk song to remind guests of the terrible situation in Ukraine, the importance of remembering what is going on in that part of the world, and to help raise funds during the evening. Conductor Vinicius Kattah led the Viennese Opera Ball Orchestra. Notable attendees danced the night away in between a dinner seating, opera performances, and royal and delicate dance numbers that simply took the audiences breath away. GORGEOUS VIEWS The evening started with delightful VIP cocktail hour followed by the formal presentation. Guests continuously looked around the room at the stunning gowns and grand suits that were refreshing to witness after being put in closets for so long due to the extended pause of the pandemic. The look was gorgeous. It was a fashion show for the senses that sang out and received high applause from all in the grand hall of Cipriani. Just as in Europe, the celebration commenced with their Debutantes. The theme of this year’s ball was A Night of Love, with the goal of sending peace and love to their guests and the world, as well as celebrating the love and friendship of Austrian-American friends and connections. Royal Flowers, in collaboration with Luz Flora, donated 20,000 red roses to emphasize the night’s theme. A donation table was set up to collect funds for Caritas Ukraine. For the first time, the Viennese Opera Ball had a new Austrian wine sponsor, Leo Hillinger Wine. Winemaker Leo Hillinger was also present at the ball. Another event sponsor was Austria,s oldest jewelry designer, A.E. Köchert, and owner Mr. Wolfgang Koechert, who presented the magnificent diamond SiSi star brooch at the live auction. TIME OUT WITH… DONALD HERSHMAN

n art show in New York City can open the door to worldwide attention. No one knows this better than award-winning artist Donald Hershman. His career took flight after his 2021 Salomon Gallery exhibit in Manhattan grew from a small show to an extended showcase sold out within days. The few nights in the Big Apple highlighted original pieces that were part of a retrospective series inspired by the late Victor Arimondi. Subsequently, the innovative Hershman has been on an upward trajectory and has become part of several collectors’ wish lists. Then in 2020, Hershman won the prestigious Jury Selection at the de Young Museum and top recognition in the 2022 MvVO ART/AD art show, which saw his work displayed in the famous Oculus in Manhattan.
ON THE ROAD Now Hershman is taking his exquisite art to Provincetown’s Bear Week. The Sexuality And Shadows exhibit will premiere this summer at PTown’s only ArT LoVe GaLLerY. New artwork on display from July 9th to July 17th will highlight a celebration of the male form and a play on the inanimate. Hershman, fresh off the heels of multiple American exhibits from a sold-out show in Manhattan to displays in Dallas and Palm Springs, will take on a unique look at the male images with other subjects such as a dog in the desert tulips or a desk with shadow. “I am extremely privileged to introduce my newest works at the ArT LoVe GaLLerY during Bear Week in Provincetown. This show is a tribute to my fellow members of the LGBTQ community,” Hershman reflects. “In creating these exciting new paintings, I’ve integrated the stark shadows, rich color, and cropping practices traditionally used with my still life and portraits and applied them to the male figure to achieve a mysterious allure and sexuality.”
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Born in 1954 and raised in New York City, he received his BA in Pre-Med with Psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo and trained in Podiatry at the College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco before establishing his private practice there in the early 1980s. As the painter was building his medical practice, he was also evolving a body of artwork, exploring various media in the form of drawings and paintings, and finding his voice as an artist. Driven by a desire to improve the state of the world continually, Don Hershman lives out a fascinating dual life in grand succession that inspires his artwork. He holds unique combined positions as an illustrious artist and a renowned podiatric surgeon. Equal satisfaction is found when he paints and produces art, as well as when he performs surgery on patients.
In the upcoming exhibit, striking male figures and brightly saturated still images bring to life a poignant vision in colorful artwork. The undeniable presence is beautiful to witness up close and personal. Hershman creates a fantastic realm that is a must-see, from hauntingly alluring images of male torsos to the rich nuances of artistic shadows on a wall produced from objects like vases. “By cropping techniques and juxtaposing these images, I wanted to reach a transcendence beyond the ‘traditional male nude,’ while still attaining the allure, beauty, and sexuality,” states the artist. “The black, utilized by shadows or backdrops, elicits a kind of power, elegance, and even mystery.” Taking his work to the landmark ArT LoVe GaLLerY is a dream come true for the artist and a mission long in the making.
