NOTEBOOK from*the*editor Hello New Tribe Readers, Welcome to a great new issue of New Tribe Magazine. August is here and if past history is to be believed it will be a month of sun, rain, hail, maybe a tornado or two, and that will most likely be transpiring all in one day. You got to love this unpredictable city! The August issue is also a great one for fans of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) as we did a Q/A with two up and coming fighters, Kenny Weasel Head and Jesse Day Rider. Check it out starting on page 20 Stampede is over but it’s still a good month for Pow Wows so make sure to check the calendar for upcoming events because there just isn’t a better way to spend a beautiful summer day. As usual when you try and get things perfect delays can happen which is where we are at with the new launch of the improved USAY web site. Join our Face book page to get new updates on the launch, but I promise it will be soon.

Aboriginal Happenings From Across Canada Aboriginal women still fighting for rights 25 years later

ALBERTA – They were born and raised on the Cold Lake Indian reserve in northeastern Alberta, as were their parents and grandparents. But the women — who are status Indians — are not allowed to live there, nor may they vote for chief or council. Why? Because they married non-aboriginal men. Until 1985, if an aboriginal woman married a non-native man, she lost her status as an Indian and all the rights that went with it. A man who married a non-native woman kept his status. That year the federal government amended the Indian Act with Bill C-31 to fix the inequity. But the law hasn’t helped Agnes Gendron, Nancy Scanie, Lillian Shirt or thousands of other aboriginal women across Canada who still are known as “C-31s.” They and their children have been kicked

off reserves and cannot get access to schools, medical or other services available to those living on reserve. And they can’t vote out those who don’t recognize them. “For all intents and purposes, they have lost their treaty rights, which are valuable,” says lawyer Randy Fowle, who took on Scanie’s case pro bono. This past June, the Cold Lake First Nations held an election for chief and council. Gendron, 67, was not allowed to vote, just has she has been unable to vote in any election for years. Every three years, when an election is held, she tries to get on the voters’ list. Every year she gets a letter that tells her this: “While you have met the majority of criteria, your request has been denied based upon the following: Cold Lake First Nations abides by a Custom Election Law dated May 27, 1986 which does not include nor exclude persons reinstated under Bill C-31; and Cold Lake First Nations has traditionally excluded persons reinstated under Bill C-31.” Gendron has filed letters of protest, but they go unanswered. Ottawa gives $110 million to fight diabetes in Aboriginals

MANITOBA – The federal government is giving aboriginal people a $110-million boost to help fight diabetes in their communities, Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq announced here Wednesday. The money over the next two years will go toward the Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative (ADI) which provides diabetesrelated education and health resources to communities. The importance of the initiative hits close to home for Long Plain residents. Mounted on the wall of the health services building where the announcement was made is a quilt with patches commemorating the 50 community members who died from diabetes in recent years. The prevalence of diabetes in Manitoba’s Aboriginals is four times higher than for the general population. Long Plain Chief David Meeches said everyone in his community is directly or indirectly affected by the disease. SOURCE - WINNIPEG FREE PRESS

Tribe*Mail JULY Issue 2010 Our July issue of NEW TRIBE magazine showed that the diversity of musical talent in Calgary and the surrounding area is a great mix of musical styles and formats. We also showcased some amazing local artists and are always looking for emerging talent to ensure we cover the widest possible topics we can. As with every issue we welcome your feedback to ensure the staff at the magazine stay on the right track to deliver the best editorial content possible. Below are a few that have recently been sent in.

IN THE MAIL How can I have the magazine sent to my house each month? JOHN BAKER Ed. Note: Check out our web site for information on how to get a subscription to the magazine. Also, to make it easier we will also be posting a list of where the magazine is available for free locally. ABOUT THE MUSIC I just wanted to say I really enjoyed reading the recent music issue of new tribe magazine. I like how you profiled different types of music instead of just the usual rap and hip hop. Keep up the great work and try and continue with adding more music stories in upcoming issues. Shelly Sleigh THE MOVIE ISSUE I just finished reading the music issue of New Tribe magazine online and wanted to tell you guys it was a good one. It made me think that it would be cool to have a movie edition as well. I think a big chunk of the people who read the magazine love movies so it would likely be a success. Thanks for letting me have some input. Jennifer Eagles Ed. Note: That is a great idea and something we will have in the near future. Thanks

for the e-mail. A GOOD MIX I like how the mag has a mix of locally based articles and also international stories like the BP oil spill. My kids don’t read a lot, I’m always trying to get them to read more, but they always look through each issue when it comes out and it’s nice to see them learning about what is going on in other parts of the world. One question/concern/criticism I have is that I feel the magazine lacks a certain amount of Native spiritualism that I think would be beneficial for our youth to learn about. Can this be an area the magazine can look into more in the future? Other than that keep up the fantastic work. Kristen Waterchief Ed. Note: Thank-you for the letter. I certainly agree and we will try and do better with our content selection to include the spiritual aspect of Aboriginal culture. THE HORROR THE HORROR I wanted to send an e-mail to mention two things. First, I love the magazine and especially the new looking format. It’s almost like you can sell it! But don’t because it’s god that it’s free. Second, bring back the horoscopes! Jaydee B

Ed. Note: They will be back next issue. I hope it’s a great month for you. ;-) LONG TIME READER I have been a reader of New Tribe Magazine since the beginning when it was just a small newspaper that had uneven release dates. I have enjoyed watching it grow to it’s present magazine style and am happy to see the progress it continues to make. It’s looking good so keep up the good work. I was just curious on how the decisions get made each month on what the content will be? Melanie Darnell Ed. Note: Thank-you for the e-mail. Each month’s content is usually made up from ideas from New Tribe staff, the staff of USAY, and ideas we get from the community. If you have something you would like to see please let us know. A Child’s Pain: Parental Alcohol Abuse ANONYMOUS I woke up early today. It was Saturday, so there was no school. I invited my friend Ashley to my house today. She is my neighbor and my best friend in the whole world, but she didn’t want to come to my house. I don’t know why she said no, so I asked her why. She looked scared and didn’t say a word. I was mad at her for a while but then I wanted to find out the real reason why she would not go to my house. I thought about what I do everyday. Everyday I get out of bed and go to the bathroom. I brush my teeth, take a shower, and comb my hair. I have a lot of scratches on my arms, and I clean those up too. I get all of my homework and get ready for school. My mom screams at me from downstairs. She doesn’t like when I don’t come downstairs after she calls me. She would always yell Amanda when she got angry. My dad was always gone in the morning. I would always ask mom where he was. She would

10

NEW TRIBE AUGUST 2010

never answer. I always had the same breakfast every morning. It was a piece of toast with water. When I asked her for something else, she would tell me to get a job. I don’t know how to get a job because I’m only seven years old. I know a job is where people go to get money. I wish I had money to buy my favorite doll. I did find a dollar under the sofa, but my dad took it from me. He told me that I didn’t deserve the dollar. During breakfast, my mom never said a word. If she was mad, she would scream at me. She would scream at me every morning. When my dad got home from work, he would scream at me and my mom. I never talk when he gets home. He mostly sends me to my room and tells me to close the door. When I’m in my room, I could hear my parents screaming at each other. Every time I go to my friend’s house,

it’s really quiet. My friend Ashley’s parents are real nice to me. They take us to the park, the toy store, and the zoo. Sometimes I wish they were my parents. They never scream at each other. It’s weird that they don’t do that. I thought a lot of parents fight with each other because my parents fight every day. When they get home, I see my parents drinking out of some bottle. I don’t know what it is, but I know that they fight after they drink it. I never see Ashely’s parents drinking out of a bottle. I thought only little babies did that, but my parents did not drink milk. I like going to my friend’s house and school. I’m going to go to second grade soon. My teacher is really nice, and I like her. She told me that I was one of the smartest kids she ever had. I was happy she told me that. My parents never said anything like that. They would call me words that I didn’t understand. One day, I told my teacher these words. She

COMMUNITY didn’t say anything for a while. She just looked at me with her mouth open, and she told me where I learned those words. I didn’t want to tell her my parents said them because I didn’t want to get in trouble. I told her it was from a TV show. She told me to never say those words again.

downstairs. It was my dad coming up the stairs. He pushed the door really hard and ran after me. I didn’t run at all. He grabbed me and started hitting me. I screamed and told him to stop, but he didn’t listen. After he was done, he threw me on the wall and yelled at me. I cried that whole night, but I had been hit before.

I said okay. When I get home from school, I see holes in the wall. I see my mom crying in the kitchen. I ask her what’s wrong, but she tells me go away. She cries a lot more when my dad gets home. Sometimes my parents would scream at each other and sometimes they would fight. I sneaked out of my room one day and saw my dad hit my mom. I didn’t know what to do, so I went back to my room. Suddenly, I heard a noise from

One time, my dad was so angry that he locked me out of the house. He threw away all my toys out the window and told me to die. I didn’t say anything back to him. It was really cold, and I felt scared. I was outside the whole night. I wanted to go to my friend’s house, but my dad told me not to. I saw my dad and my mom drinking a lot of bottles inside the house. I saw them hitting each other really hard. My mom was bleeding a lot. I fell asleep. I was allowed back into the house, but

that night was so cold that I couldn’t feel my fingers. The school helped fix my fingers, and they asked why I was in the cold. I told them I forgot to wear mittens. I didn’t always get hit before. When I was younger, my parents never hit me. They never screamed that much. When I turned six, they started drinking from the bottle a lot. Ever since then, I’ve been getting hit. Every morning, I clean the scratches and blood. At first, getting hit was scary, but I got used to it. I know that a lot of parents hit their kids, so I think it’s okay. That’s how my day goes. I still don’t understand why Ashley won’t come over. I didn’t do anything bad.

Dating Tips For Summer

I think when we were teenagers we all looked forward to going out and dating. The first dates are always so exciting, and then if you enjoyed the persons company, it always makes the date a lot of fun, then if you all want to see each other again you start looking forward to going out with them again. Sometimes dating can lead to long term relationships, and some are just flings, but it’s all a lot of fun along the way. Especially when you’re young, you’re still trying to figure out who you are and what and who suits you best. Dating in the summertime is never the same as dating in school time; the summertime gives you more free time to do things, at anytime of the day. When you’re in school you normally get stuck with Friday night dates, and weekend dates because most of the time you have so much homework and strict parents that you’re so focused on just getting good grades. When summer vacation comes around that opens your days, time, and your mind is able to relax and enjoy your vacation. There is so much you can

do when you’re dating someone in the summer time. Some great activities you and your date can do would be if you live near a beach pack up the car and a picnic lunch, your bathing suits, and your sunscreen and head to the beach. What could be more fun than spending sometime in the sun then cooling off in the ocean? If you don’t live by the beach why not go swimming at the city pool, it won’t be as intimate but it sure will be a nice way to cool off together when it’s scorching outside. Hiking can be a wonderful morning date, Its not to hot and if you get up early enough you can hike for a while stop and have a picnic breakfast, with fruit and orange juice, or some easy food like that, then you could hike to a pound or stream, if your hiking trail has one, and swim for a while. Even if you decide to pack your own picnic lunch and take it to the park it would be just as good as if you went to a restaurant and had lunch, it would be a nice way to spend time together. Then maybe you two can sit in the shade and eat popsicles, after the popsicles maybe

the to of you could take a stroll in the mall and just browse, you never know maybe you’ll find a nice bench to sit at and just talk. In the evening time you could take your date to a restaurant that has an outside patio and eat you dinner outside when the evenings is nice and cool. It also sets a nice comfortable romantic setting. After dinner you two should go to see a movie, some of the best movies come out in the summer time, and it would be a nice way to end the evening. The movies can also be a great place to go in the day time as well, when it’s hot and the two of you would love to go and cool down somewhere. Ice cream at anytime of the day is always something fun and cooling to do with your date, I guess what I am trying to say is, that in the summertime going on dates can be a lot of fun, but it would be best to do things that you can stay cool or cool off if you need to. Nobody can have fun if they are over heated or to tired from the heat. Stay cool and have fun, and of course be safe.

Back to School! It is hard to believe that the end of summer is here, and that the kids will be headed back to school soon. Here are some helpful tips to get ready for a great school year. -Go shopping for some back to school supplies. Make sure that you get everything your child needs, and include one or two special items to help him/her look forward to using them once school starts. -Pick out a special first day of school outfit. Buy something new that you and your child are happy with, or pick something fun and special that you already have at home. Either way, put the outfit away and save it until the first day of school. If your child enjoys planning

backpack, or somewhere that he/she will find it once at school.

-If you are packing lunch, talk to your child about some fun favorite foods, and be sure to pack them all for the first few days of school.

-On the first day of school take time to make your child’s favorite breakfast. This will start the day and the school year off right.

-If your child buys lunch at school, if possible, let them buy a special treat such as an ice cream or bag of chips on the first day of school.

- Be sure to take a first day of school picture to look back on later in the year.

-Get into an early bedtime routine now. This will make it easier for everyone when your child has to get up to head out the door in time for school. - The night before school, hide a special back to school note in your child’s

-When it is time to drop your child off at the bus stop or classroom, give him/ her a big hug and a words of support and encouragement. It is going to be another great school year. A new school year will be here again before you know it!

COOL JOBS PROFILE Rachel Paris

Program Manager USAY What is your name and job title ? (Where do you work?)

How long have you been doing this job?

What are the challenges within your job?

My name is Rachel Paris and I am the Program Manager here at USAY.

Well, I moved to Calgary from Ontario in April, so I’ve been here for 4 months now and I’m loving it!

The biggest challenge for me is to make sure we meet the requirements of a funding application. There’s a lot of rules, stipulations and requirements that they have of applicants, making sure you’re meeting expectations is sometimes overwhelming, but it is worth it in the end.

What does your job consist of? My main duty as Program Manager is to develop and manage programs for USAY. Applying for funding and creating proposals has taken up the majority of my time here so far at USAY, a lot of work goes into developing a program - research and dedication are key to a good proposal.

Why did you get into this type of work? I love helping people and working within the Aboriginal community. Also, I love trying to make a difference wherever I can, and my job allows me to do that. It has been a sharp learning curve, and a challenge at times to meet deadlines, but if at the end of the day I’ve helped someone - that’s a good feeling.

What advice do you have for any other youth interested in this position?

Celiac Disease: Gluten-Free For Life Jolene Frayne-Callihoo

Did you know - Celiac disease affects 1 in every 120 people world wide? Celiac Disease is a small intestine malabsorption disorder caused by an inherited intolerance to the gluten protein in wheat, rye, and barley. It causes multiple nutrient deficiencies due to the body’s inability to absorb nutrients such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. These essential nutrients are required to sustain and prolong a healthy life. “While it is still unknown whether celiac disease is passed on by a dominant or recessive gene it has been established that genetic factors are involved. About 10% of the relatives of persons with celiac disease may also have the condition.” - Canadian Celiac Association. Until recently, celiac disease was recognized primarily in children but in recent studies, it has been shown to surface at any age. Notice next time you are at the grocery store and a product advertises ‘GlutenFree’. This is because since 2008, the term Gluten-Free has been standardized for specific foods which do not contain gluten. Although this regulation is voluntary, it is expected, and has been commonly used in grocery stores across Canada. Symptoms & Diagnosis Celiac Disease can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms displayed are similar to those of other diseases. Symptoms can include anemia, fatigue, cramps and bloating, irritability, weight loss, diarrhea, steatorrhea, and flatulence. In other cases, some sufferers from gluten-intolerance may develop a rash called dermatitis herpetiformis. Children with celiac disease

often have stunted growth and are severely underweight. There are diverse variations in sensitivity to gluten for celiac disease sufferers, and although the symptoms may not be obvious, damage to the intestinal lining may still occur. It is important to get screened if you have concerns about celiac disease or if others in your family have been diagnosed. A number of other conditions have also been reported to occur because of untreated CD, and can be expected to improve when treated with a gluten-free diet such as osteoporosis and depression. Since the new awareness of this disease, doctors are ordering diagnostic tests more frequently and the rate of newly diagnosed cases are consistently increasing. Diagnostic tests can either include blood screening tests, which are available to aid in the diagnosis, or for a more definitive diagnosis, a small bowel biopsy. The Canadian Celiac Association states that, the rate at which adults are being diagnosed is increasing, particularly those in the 40-50 year old range and medical studies indicate the disease may be more common than previously recognized. Diet & Treatment People who are celiac are treated with a lifelong gluten free diet which they must follow to prevent the onset of health complications related to avoiding treatment. There is no known cure for celiac disease but can usually be effectively treated and controlled by following a gluten-free diet.

Free diets are often designed and monitored with the help of an experienced registered dietician. which requires frequent “up-dates” as commercial food contents change and diets are often designed and monitored with the help of an experienced, registered dietician. The processed and packaged foods we are used to buying in today’s society have many hidden sources of gluten which can be unintentionally ingested. Precautionary care should be taken in the purchases of soups, luncheon meats and sausages. It is important for celiacs to be cautious of the hidden sources of gluten such as HVP/ HPP (hydrolyzed vegetable/plant protein); malt; spelt; kamut; and certain drug products. People with this disease must read the list of ingredients on labels every time to prevent the ingestion of gluten and hidden sources of gluten.

Hairy Bull

First of all how long have you been involved with MMA? I have been involved with mma for about four years now. What made you want to pursue MMA Fighting? It all started when my wife told me to get involved in the sport because at the time I was playing hockey, in the ranchland league, and I was a enforcer for my team the Kainai Braves and Chiefs. In a fight, where do you like to take the fight and what style do you prefer? In a fight I prefer to stand up and utilize my Muay Thai skills because the fans love a good stand up war and when the fans love it the promoter invites you back and that is were the bonuses are. Besides MMA, What do you do like to do? My hobbies include playing with my kids, they are my life and the reason I do this sport. I also enjoy hockey, basketball, baseball, football and going to Pow Wows to watch my kids dance. What’s your motivation or what pushes you to go out and train hard and make every fight count? What motivates me to train my hardest is my kids and my wife because she is in my corner in every fight and I do not want to lose in front of her. Here’s a question I would like to know, what music do you like to train to and is there a certain entrance song you prefer? The music that I like to train to is anything that has to do with hard rock such as Pantera and acdc, but once

in a while I like to listen to Lady Sovern and Alicia Keys. The music I walk down the isle to a fight is anything to do with Pow Wow music from different drum groups like Blackfoot Confederacy and Northern Cree. What makes a role model in your eyes? In my eyes a role model is a person is positive and someone who involved with the community. Those are traits youth should follow. I know you have kids and wondered if you consider yourself a role model not only to your kids but to all Aboriginal youth who go out and see you fight? I do think off myself as a role model not only to my children but the Aboriginal youth as well because they need someone to look up to and I like to show them if you work hard enough at your goals you can achieve anything, and that nothing is impossible as long as you put your mind and a huge effort into earning your goals. Who is your role model today and when you were growing up? My role models are my corner men, they are all good fathers, Lionel Weasel Head, Gerrett Standing Alone, Brent Smith, and my beautiful and wonderful wife who is also a great mother. What do you have to say to any Aboriginal Youth wanting to be an MMA fighter? For any Aboriginal youth who have dreams of becoming an MMA fighter I would just like to say anything is possible and I‘m the proof that if you follow what you believe in anything can be achieved.

If you could train or fight any MMA Superstar, Who would it be and why? If I could train with any fighter it would have to be Rich Franklin because he is such a positive fighter and a wonderful human being. If I could fight any mma fighter I would have to leave that up to the fans because what ever fight they want to see I try to make it happen. In 5 years where do you see yourself? In five years from know I see myself in a company with a future and teaching mma to Aboriginal youth. I have a gym opening up soon on my reserve and I just want to give back to our people. In life I see myself raising my wonderful kids and teaching them all that I know. What are the obstacles you come across while taking care of your family and training at the same time? The obstacles that I have to over come is finding enough time and having so little of it I make sure it’s spent well. What is the mind set you have while training for a fight? The thing that is on my mind is my family and how much I want to give them all that they deserve. What do you have to say to your fans and youth reading this? I would like to say to any fan or youth reading this magazine is to be proud of who we are. We are Aboriginal and we have to hold our heads up high with pride. Everyone at New Tribe Magazine wishes Kenny the best of luck on his upcoming fights. NEW TRIBE AUGUST 2010

Tribe*PROFI LE

Q/A with Jesse Day Rider compiled by Ritchie

Hairy Bull

Let’s start off by telling the readers a little something about yourself? My name is Jesse Day Rider, and my Indian name is (Sikapioh-Kitopi), which I have tattooed on my right arm. I help run my dads construction company, Day Rider Construction Company. Day Rider construction and Associates Limited (DRCAL). I train out of the progressive fighting Academy (PFA). That is out of Lethbridge Alberta, with Brad (The Brick Wall), who is a Champion Kick boxer. Do you have a fighting name and if so what is it and where did you come up with it? My fight name is Blood Warrior. Being a Blackfoot native that lives on the Blood Reserve, I thought to myself, what would be a good name to present my people and reserve, and being a modern day native warrior, so I combined the two. That’s how I thought of Blood Warrior. How long have you been in the sport of MMA and what made you pursue this type of challenge? I have been involved in MMA for almost a year. I have some friends that are fighters such as Kenny Weasel Head, Buddy Dixon and Victor DayChief. They told me how fun and challenging it is and I needed a new goal in life to see what my limitations are and I also wanted to learn something new. So I went to PFA and signed up. What keeps you motivated and focused on training and fighting hard? I wanted to show my kids and the tribes youth that with MMA being a new sport anyone can do it with hard work and great dedication. I also want to represent our Blood Reserve well, and show people that there are still Native Warriors out there, we have not gone anywhere and we won’t ever leave.. When was your last fight and when

and where is your next fight? My last fight was June 4th in Calgary in a show called School Of Hard Knocks. It was against Jeremy Edwards from Edmonton Alberta. I won in the second round due to a rear naked choke. My next fight is in Missoula Montana on August 21st. What is a role model in your eyes?

to Aboriginal youth on wanting to pursue their MMA goals and dreams ? I would say “Just go and do it”, who cares what people say (let them talk) just because they are scared to try anything new. There will be many obstacles to overcome, but when you overcome them you will be that much stronger for it.

A role model in my eyes is someone who leads by example and who’s proud of where he/she is from, and does.

When you are a few minutes from a fight, what is going through your mind before you enter the ring or cage?

What makes a role model in your eyes?

Just before a fight a whole range of emotions come to me, scared, anxious, excitement, but with the excellent training I get from Brad Wall and the boys/girls back at PFA. I know they have prepared me enough to face my opponent with confidence. When I step into the cage one final thought goes through my head, this guy does not have the heart and spirit this blood Warrior has.

In my eyes a role model is a person is positive and someone who involved with the community. Those are traits youth should follow. As a fighter and a role model, do you feel pressure knowing Aboriginal youth are looking up to you? The pressure is not to bad because my kids are already looking up to me, and with the youth looking up to me I don’t want to fail. It just drives me harder to succeed to show them that they can do it too. It is also very important to me because I am trying to show the youth that there are other paths in life besides drugs and alcohol. Also to let them know if they are on the wrong path, they can change. It is NEVER, too late. Who is your Favorite MMA fighter and why? I like Chuck Liddell because he does not give up at all. He got knocked out his last few fights, but still has the guts to say “who and when is my next fight”. I like his drive. With the MMA sport growing so big, what do you have to say

For the Aboriginal youth and New Tribe readers, is there anything you want to say for your last word ? With the help of Brad Wall we are hoping to open a gym on the Blood Reserve to help our youth achieve their goals in breaking into this new and exciting sport. I would like to thank my wife Shilow for her support and also my mom, sisters, brothers and my kids. And most of all my dad Leonard for his love and support and for showing me that anything is possible if you work hard enough for your goals and dreams, and Brad Wall for allowing me to represent our reserve with pride. Also to my fans support, and mostly family and friends. I want to thank my sponsors DRCAL, Bald Eagle Insurance(BEI) and Eagle Spirit embroidery. Everyone at New Tribe Magazine wishes Jesse the best of luck on his upcoming fights.

COMMUNITY

violence against women

Aboriginal people of North America located in the regions of Canada are composed of several distinct groups. These groups are the First Nations which can be found throughout Canada but are highly concentrated in Ontario and British Columbia, the Inuit, which can be found in the arctic regions of Canada, and the Metis groups, which are generally more scattered throughout Canada. Evidence that suggests that the violence faced by Canadian Aboriginal women is isolated or experienced by particular groups is hard to find so this leads to the conclusion that the acts of violence experienced by Aboriginal women is entrenched and more widespread. Violent acts committed against Aboriginal women by both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal men has persisted for decades. In response to the inaction and apathy shown by provincial Canadian authorities and by the federal government, Aboriginal people, out of frustration and outrage have formed their own social awareness campaigns to raise awareness of issues that are faced by their people. Examples of well known organizations are : The Native Women’s Association of Canada or NWAC (which is said to be the most influential), Pauktuutit, and Women of the Métis Nation. The latter two organizations represent different indigenous groups but NWAC is said to have the most influence. Violence committed against Aboriginal women is actually a symptom of the systemic problem of the marginalization of Aboriginal people. Although hardships are experienced by all Aboriginal people, women do bare a disproportionate amount of this burden. Violence committed against women is not just limited to physical violence. Other forms of violence were the recognized “Stolen Generations” which were the result of the Aboriginal Child Removal Policies implemented as early as the late nineteenth century and as late as 1970. These policies involved removing children or even big groups of Aboriginal people in Canada and educating them in an attempt to facilitate or encourage the groups assimilation. The education that these Aboriginal children received was totally different from the traditional types of education that they would have received. The education disrupted families, and tribes and surely implanted a cultural dualism in the children who received the education. Other examples of violence include the uprooting of tribes from their homelands and damage to tribal habitats which disrupt the tribes ability to exist. All of these forms of violence have had more impact on women since the roles or that were traditionally fulfilled by women are no longer there anymore. This has led to women seeking other means of survival. Human trafficking is common amount Aboriginal women. Indigenous women are often the victims of sexual crimes. According to a report published by Amnesty International titled “No More Stolen Sisters,” Indigenous women are paid 30% less than non Aboriginal women. The lack of access to basic services that are widely available to non-Aboriginal also contributes to the desperate actions taken by women. Amnesty International, a non governmental organization, along with the Native Women’s Association of Canada, may be largely responsible for raising public awareness on violations of human rights persuading the Canadian federal government to obey the United Nations Declaration on the rights of Aboriginal Peoples. It publishes articles covering ongoing issues within the Aboriginal

24

NEW TRIBE AUGUST 2010

COMMUNITY l community. The government of Canada is one of four nations which opposes the U.N. declaration on the rights of Aboriginal Peoples and it resists offering basic public services like safe houses or shelters for Aboriginal women. Even though the government of Canada has been responsive and is aware of the violence experienced by indigenous women the actions taken by the government have been described as “piecemeal” at best by NGO’s like Amnesty International. In 2006 an article titled “Stolen Sisters: Discrimination and Violence Against Indigenous Women in Canada,” published by the human rights organization Amnesty International highlights possible courses of action to stop the violence experienced by indigenous women: “Many police forces have failed to institute necessary measures – such as training, protocols and accountability mechanisms – to ensure that officers understand and respect the Indigenous communities they serve. Without such measures, police too

often fail to do all they can to ensure the safety of Indigenous women and girls whose lives are in danger. “ In “No More Stolen Sisters,” the article cites the evidence collected from the Native Women’s Association of Canada that more than 500 women have gone missing in the past three decades. Various governmental reports find that the rates of indigenous women involvement in a brutal sexual assault are 3.5 times higher than non indigenous women. Another report finds that “young First Nation women are 5 times more likely to die as a result of violence.” Contributing factors to all of these issues is citizen, and state apathy. When women are found murdered in the aftermath of a sexual assault it is often times not recorded by the police that the victim was part of an indigenous community. Public and state monitoring of sexual violence is lax. Since indigenous women are afraid of being arrested they often times do not report instances of sexual assault. This has and will result in a vicious cycle with the victim not

getting justice and the perpetrator getting away with his crime. Public opinion about indigenous people is not what it should be. The images circulated by society of indigenous people is not uplifting or respectful but insulting and degrading. Public respect and awareness of the strength and longstanding sustainability of indigenous people will result in a better relationship for both the Canadian government, the citizens of Canada and the all indigenous tribes scattered in Canada. It will be for the public good. So, what the “Lost Sisters,” articles appears to leave out is the importance of educating Canadian citizens about the seriousness of the issue. Canadians and all land usurpers the world over need to be educated about the lifestyles in which native people originally lived in and the conditions in which they live in today. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2004/10/04/ ai_aboriginal041004.html http://www.amnesty.ca/campaigns/sisters_ overview.php

GAME*ON

Game Reviews

By Jonas Soosay

Singularity Singularity is set on a fictional Russian island where An American black ops member is sent to investigate the development of a highly radioactive new element called E-99 was found in the 1950’s.What he sees is a catastrophe decades in the making. A research institute discovered that it was devastatingly powerful, but a cataclysmic event destroyed the island and turned its inhabitants into mutants. You’ll face these crazed mutants, monsters and Russian agents. You’ll need to age and control objects, warp back in time, and solve puzzles to set things right. The game play provides teeth clenching suspense as you confront hordes of enemies with a good array of weapons and special abilities. Influenced by Half Life 2 and BioShock, Singularity is a first person shooter with a story line that keeps you hooked and wanting more. As it’s similarities are compared with BioShock and Half Life, you can expect an interesting, attention grabbing, and exciting game. The graphics could have been better and the weapons were too standardized however, the overall game is amusing and uses time as the main focal point. For example, if a rusty stairwell can’t be climbed to get to the next objective, the player could use the TMD (time machine device), to put it back together by either bending time to the future or past. I would recommend Singularity to gamers who enjoy ‘first person’ shooters and exciting story lines.

Years 1-4

Developed by Traveller’s Tales, Lego Harry Potter:Years 1–4 was released in June 2010.The game is based on the Lego Harry Potter line and its storyline covers the first four books and films of the Harry Potter series: Philosopher’s Stone; Chamber of Secrets; Prisoner of Azkaban; and Goblet of Fire. The game play emphasizes primarily on collecting, exploring. and casting spells. Potion-making is another fun feature; potions can help the player complete levels and obtain achievements. Polyjuice potion allows players to temporarily change their characters into any other unlocked character. The game has a total of more than 160 different playable characters where most characters have a special ability, like Harry’s use of his Invisibility Cloak, Hermione’s ability to use books to solve puzzle locks, Scabbers and Crookshanks being able to move in tight spaces or Sirius’ Animagus ability. Characters also have different varying strengths and weaknesses as well. This game is another fantastic game alongside with previously rendered Lego games. It is full of witty, humorous story scenes which will keep you laughing throughout. There are so many compelling features and details that you will not notice everything on the first play through so luckily the game is designed for players to play through the levels over and over. This can also lead the game play to become redundant and a bit time consuming for those who don’t enjoy testing their patience. Overall, this game is a must for Harry Potter and Lego fans everywhere. I would defiantly recommend this game to everyone, even to those first time Lego virgins. I guarantee that you will be addicted to playing most Lego games once you try Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4. Turn up the Volume By Katty Jo Rabbit

Band of Horses Infinite Arms This third album release from the voice of Ben Bridwell’s throat does not have that much in it, it feels so boring and drab, and you almost feel sorry for the rest of the band who consists of Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey, and Bill Reynolds, who were given some of the credit to the writing and composure of the album. Which in total took over a year to produce, sixteen months to be exact, so for anyone coming in late in the game with BOH, sorry to say you have missed the best of it, the best being the first two albums. On second thought, just the first album, because with those two, you had some feeling, some pump and thrust, you had gusto, now you have this boring, flittery, leisurely, almost, “I am too darn lazy to get out of bed” vibe, that does nothing for the listener, especially with these extremely hot days. You really want them to put a break in the drabber, and throw some color into the meld, sadly they do not. What your left with, is an extremely laid back sound, with nothing new, you would at least expect something to catch your ear, in most cases a band would want to show you something new, some sort of new gimmick to keep you buying up their sounds. Here they only get the rest of the band to add to the mix, something they should have been doing from the get go. All in all, this album was a bit of a downer, the only song recommended would be the song “Factory” but only if you’re a highly motivated individual, and it is two in the morning and you have nothing better to do.

M.I.A Maya Another disappointment to add to the list, with all the hype, and media attacks from M.I.A you would like to think that she was really fighting for something; she even went as far as saying that she was better than Lady GaGa. Well prove it? Because with this latest album to drop, there was absolutely nothing in the mix, that could out do the hype of Lady GaGa. If there was an actual rap off, or sing off, Lady GaGa would whip it out, and create something absurd and catchy and then probably shoot off her gun bra, while M.I.A would stand there with her tacky 80’s track suit and orange lipstick, doing all these b-boy hand signals while yelling out profanity. That would have been cool, when “Paper Planes” was still cool, but now, it is just blather. It sad to say really, that all the noise, and extras, just do not do it for the Sir Lankan, who was once kidnapped by a fan, to an acreage where she was exposed to all this freaky art. It is those fans the super hard core, that will engage this, but if you come off the streets, and have seen Pineapple Express then there is really nothing here to motivate you to buy the album. Where are all the catchy hooks, the jungle beats, and the rebel who sings for a cause? Instead you are left with an angry girl who does not even really care about the art, who is more concerned with the rebellion, which is another thing that is confusing, rebellion over what? It is hard to hear any sort of cause that M.I.A is singing about, because all the electronic bells and whistles, there is no focus. No front, not even a real catch beat, just word jumble, paired alongside noisy beats. This is the first time, yours truly has ever been really let down, by someone she thought was worth the while.

Music You Can Feel In Your Toes The Black Keys Brothers Definitely a band to keep track of, they have not once let their fans down, and have not bored them either in the process. Which is hard to do, when your nine albums in, hopefully the best has yet to come. Most likely, this may be the last creative return, only because it seems as though so much is packed in, that there might be nothing left. Especially since it took them some time to pick this up and go with it, both band members had done some side projects and just when you think they were not going to reunite for another album they did. Here you find the same heavy chords, paired with nice sultry vocals, and then you get a little playful, with sounds that come straight from CCR, which is not clear whether that was on purpose or not. One song that stuck out was the song Next Girl, where lyrics go, Oh my next girl/will be nothing like, my ex girl/I made mistakes back then, I’ll never do it again/Oh my next girl/she’ll be nothing like my ex girl/It was a painful dance/now I got a second chance, lyrics like this, do not go unnoticed. Everyone I know for sure has felt like this, and now you have your chance to sing it. This is what makes The Black Keys a staple in contemporary blues. The truthful grit, the catchy riffs, and the soulful sounds they meld last for a long time, hopefully longer then they intend. All the while, both Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have fun while they are making this album; to help them was Danger Mouse, but only on one song, even the cd itself is a little fun, like the hyper color shirts of the past the cd changes in heat temperatures exposing some hidden writing on the album. So if you are looking for the zest of rock and roll you will find it here.

Stars The Five Ghosts Wow, ten years have passed, and this band is finally coming out again with some music to listen to while you are bored of the everyday. This definitely will not get you out of the funk that it may put you in. Because, for one, the music blends into this really drab, dreary shade of sludge, and secondly, it is to sluggish, reminding us all that yes summer is already over. With music like this, maybe it should be left to old people, but wait they are all over their twenty’s. So this is what old people listen to when they are feeling indie pop, while most of us are still finding our signature styles, this isn’t something recommended. At least now, they have given more recognition to their front women, Amy Millan who finally gets to take centre stage, where she should belong, but because of the other people in the band has only a few songs to really shine. Whose idea was it, to make this album anyways? You have all seen their attempt at new media marketing, with the two singers talking about the album while you wait for your movie to start. That does not do enough though, it does not make you want to check out the album and who is to blame you, in today’s world where motivation is hard to come by, why then would you want to buy music that makes you feel like you are in this constant state of boredom. Yes, the album is called ghosts, but what is the purpose of that? Does it remind you that our death is eminent? That we will one day be ghosts ourselves? Not very comforting, or entertaining is it.

LEGENDS Origin Of The Medicine Lodge In the earliest times there was no war. All the tribes were at peace. In those days there was a man who had a daughter, a very beautiful girl. Many young men wanted to marry her, but every time she was asked, she only shook her head and said she did not want a husband. “How is this?” asked her father. “Some of these young men are rich, handsome, and brave.” “Why should I marry?” replied the girl. “I have a rich father and mother. Our lodge is good. The parfleches are never empty. There are plenty of tanned robes and soft furs for winter. Why worry me, then?” The Raven Bearers held a dance; they all dressed carefully and wore their ornaments, and each one tried to dance the best. Afterwards some of them asked for this girl, but still she said no. Then the Bulls, the Kit-foxes, and others of the I-kun-uh’kah-tsi held their dances, and all those who were rich, many great warriors, asked this man for his daughter, but to every one of them she said no. Then her father was angry, and said: “Why, now, this way? All the best men have asked for you, and still you say no. I believe you have a secret lover.” “Ah!” said her mother. “What shame for us should a child be born and our daughter still unmarried!” “Father, mother!” replied the girl, “pity me. I have no secret lover, but now hear the truth. That Above Person, the Sun, told me, ‘Do not marry any of those men, for you are mine; thus you shall be happy, and live to great age’; and again he said, ‘Take heed. You must not marry. You are mine.’” “Ah!” replied her father. “It must always be as he says.” And they talked no more about it. There was a poor young man, very poor. His father, mother, all his relations, had gone to the Sand Hills. He had no lodge, no wife to tan his robes or sew his moccasins. He stopped in one lodge today, and tomorrow he ate and slept in another; thus he lived. He was a good-looking young man, except that on his cheek he had a scar, and his clothes were always old and poor. After those dances some of the young men met this poor Scarface, and they laughed at him, and said: “Why don’t you ask that girl to marry you? You are so rich and handsome!” Scarface did not laugh; he replied: “Ah! I will do as you say. I will go and ask her.” All the young men thought this was funny. They laughed a great deal. But Scarface went down by the river. He waited by the river, where the women came to get water, and by and by the girl came along. “Girl,” he said, “wait. I want to speak with you. Not as a designing person do I ask you, but openly where the Sun looks down, and all may see.” “Speak then,” said the girl. “I have seen the days,” continued the young man “You have refused those who are young, and rich, and brave. Now, today, they laughed and said to me, ‘Why do you not ask her?’ I am poor, very poor. I have no lodge, no food, no clothes, no robes and warm furs. I have no relations; all have gone to the Sand Hills; yet, now, today, I ask you, take pity, be my wife.”

32

NEW TRIBE AUGUST 2010

The girl hid her face in her robe and brushed the ground with the point of her moccasin, back and forth, back and forth; for she was thinking. After a time she said: “True. I have refused all those rich young men, yet now the poor one asks me, and I am glad. I will be your wife, and my people will be happy. You are poor, but it does not matter. My father will give you dogs. My mother will make us a lodge. My people will give us robes and furs. You will be poor no longer.”

prairies, the valleys, and the mountains, but I have never seen the Sun’s home. Wait; I know one who is very wise. Ask the bear. He may tell you.”

&nsbsp; Then the young man was happy, and he started to kiss her, but she held him back, and said: “Wait! The Sun has spoken to me. He says I may not marry; that I belong to him. He says if I listen to him, I shall live to great age. But now I say: Go to the Sun. Tell him, ‘She whom you spoke with heeds your words. She has never done wrong, but now she wants to marry. I want her for my wife.’ Ask him to take that scar from your face. That will be his sign. I will know he is pleased. But if he refuses, or if you fail to find his lodge, then do not return to me.”

“Help me! Pity me!” replied the young man; “because of her words I seek the Sun. I go to ask him for her.”

“Oh!” cried the young man, “at first your words were good. I was glad. But now it is dark. My heart is dead. Where is that far-off lodge? where the trail, which no one yet has traveled?” “Take courage, take courage!” said the girl; and she went to her lodge. Scarface was very sad. He sat down and covered his head with his robe and tried to think what to do. After a while he got up, and went to an old woman who had been kind to him. “Pity me,” he said. “I am very poor. I am going away now on a long journey. Make me some moccasins.” “Where are you going?” asked the old woman. “There is no war; we are very peaceful here.” “I do not know where I shall go,” replied Scarface. “I am in trouble, but I cannot tell you now what it is.” So the old woman made him some moccasins, seven pairs, with parfleche soles, and also she gave him a sack of food, pemmican of berries, pounded meat, and dried back fat; for this old woman had a good heart. She liked the young man. All alone, and with a sad heart, he climbed the bluffs and stopped to take a last look at the camp. He wondered if he would ever see his sweetheart and the people again. “ Hai’-yu! Pity me, O Sun,” he prayed, and turning, he started to find the trail. For many days he traveled on, over great prairies, along timbered rivers and among the mountains, and every day his sack of food grew lighter; but he saved it as much as he could, and ate berries, and roots, and sometimes he killed an animal of some kind. One night he stopped by the home of a wolf. “Hai-yah!” said that one; “what is my brother doing so far from home?”

The next day the man traveled on again, stopping now and then to pick a few berries, and when night came he arrived at the bear’s lodge. “Where is your home?” asked the bear. “Why are you traveling alone, my brother?”

“I know not where he stops,” replied the bear. “I have traveled by many rivers, and I know the mountains, yet I have never seen his lodge. There is some one beyond, that striped-face, who is very smart. Go and ask him.” The badger was in his hole. Stooping over, the young man shouted: “Oh, cunning striped-face! Oh, generous animal! I wish to speak with you.” “What do you want?” said the badger, poking his head out of the hole. “I want to find the Sun’s home,” replied Scarface. “I want to speak with him.” “I do not know where he lives,” replied the badger. “I never travel very far. Over there in the timber is a wolverine. He is always traveling around, and is of much knowledge. Maybe he can tell you.” Then Scarface went to the woods and looked all around for the wolverine, but could not find him. So he sat down to rest “Hai’-yu! Hai’-yu!” he cried. “Wolverine, take pity on me. My food is gone, my moccasins worn out. Now I must die.” “What is it, my brother?” he heard, and looking around, he saw the animal sitting near. “She whom I would marry,” said Scarface, “belongs to the Sun; I am trying to find where he lives, to ask him for her.” “Ah!” said the wolverine. “I know where he lives. Wait; it is nearly night. Tomorrow I will show you the trail to the big water. He lives on the other side of it.” Early in the morning, the wolverine showed him the trail, and Scarface followed it until he came to the water’s edge. He looked out over it, and his heart almost stopped. Never before had any one seen such a big water. The other side could not be seen, and there was no end to it. Scarface sat down on the shore. His food was all gone, his moccasins worn out. His heart was sick. “I cannot cross this big water,” he said. “I cannot return to the people. Here, by this water, I shall die.”

“Ah!” replied Scarface, “I seek the place where the Sun lives; I am sent to speak with him.”

Not so. His Helpers were there. Two swans came swimming up to the shore. “Why have you come here?” they asked him. “What are you doing? It is very far to the place where your people live.”

“I have traveled far,” said the wolf. “I know all the

I cannot cross this big water, so I am going to die.” “No,” said the swans; “it shall not be so. Across this water is the home of that Above Person. Get on our backs, and we will take you there.” Scarface quickly arose. He felt strong again. He waded out into the water and lay down on the swans’ backs, and they started off. Very deep and black is that fearful water. Strange people live there, mighty animals which often seize and drown a person. The swans carried him safely, and took him to the other side. Here was a broad hard trail leading back from the water’s edge. “Kyi” said the swans. “You are now close to the Sun’s lodge. Follow that trail, and you will soon see it.” Scarface started up the trail, and pretty soon he came to some beautiful things, lying in it. There was a war shirt, a shield, and a bow and arrows. He had never seen such pretty weapons; but he did not touch them. He walked carefully around them, and traveled on. A little way further on, he met a young man, the handsomest person he had ever seen. His hair was very long, and he wore clothing made of strange skins. His moccasins were sewn with bright colored feathers. The young man said to him, “Did you see some weapons lying on the trail?” “Yes,” replied Scarface; “I saw them.” “But did you not touch them?” asked the young man. “No; I thought some one had left them there, so I did not take them.” “You are not a thief,” said the young man. “What is your name?” “Scarface.” “Where are you going?” “To the Sun.” “My name,” said the young man, “is A-pi-su’-ahts. The Sun is my father; come, I will take you to our lodge. My father is not now at home, but he will come in at night.” Soon they came to the lodge. It was very large and handsome; strange medicine animals were painted on it. Behind, on a tripod, were strange weapons and beautiful clothes the Sun’s. Scarface was ashamed to go in, but Morning Star said, “Do not be afraid, my friend; we are glad you have come.” They entered. One person was sitting there, Ko-ko-mik’-e-is, the Sun’s wife, Morning Star’s mother. She spoke to Scarface kindly, and gave him something to eat. “Why have you come so far from your people?” she asked. Then Scarface told her about the beautiful girl he wanted to marry. “She belongs to the Sun,” he said. “I have come to ask him for her.” When it was time for the Sun to come home, the Moon hid Scarface under a pile of robes. As soon

as the Sun got to the doorway, he stopped, and said, “I smell a person.” “Yes, father,” said Morning Star; “a good young man has come to see you. I know he is good, for he found some of my things on the trail and did not touch them.” Then Scarface came out from under the robes, and the Sun entered and sat down. “I am glad you have come to our lodge,” he said. “Stay with us as long as you think best. My son is lonesome sometimes; be his friend.” The next day the Moon called Scarface out of the lodge, and said to him: “Go with Morning Star where you please, but never hunt near that big water; do not let him go there. It is the home of great birds which have long sharp bills; they kill people. I have had many sons, but these birds have killed them all. Morning Star is the only one left.” So Scarface stayed there a long time and hunted with Morning Star. One day they came near the water, and saw the big birds. “Come,” said Morning Star; “let us go and kill those birds.” “No, no!” replied Scarface; “we must not go there. Those are very terrible birds; they will kill us.” Morning Star would not listen. He ran towards the water, and Scarface followed. He knew that he must kill the birds and save the boy. If not, the Sun would be angry and might kill him. He ran ahead and met the birds, which were coming towards him to fight, and killed every one of them with his spear: not one was left. Then the young men cut off their heads, and carried them home. Morning Star’s mother was glad when they told her what they had done, and showed her the birds’ heads. She cried, and called Scarface “my son.” When the Sun came home at night, she told him about it, and he too was glad. “My son,” he said to Scarface, “I will not forget what you have this day done for me. Tell me now, what can I do for you?” “Hai’-yu” replied Scarface. “Hai’-yu, pity me. I am here to ask you for that girl. I want to marry her. I asked her, and she was glad; but she says you own her, that you told her not to marry.” “What you say is true,” said the Sun. “I have watched the days, so I know it. Now, then, I give her to you; she is yours. I am glad she has been wise. I know she has never done wrong. The Sun pities good women. They shall live a long time. So shall their husbands and children. Now you will soon go home. Let me tell you something. Be wise and listen: I am the only chief. Everything is mine. I made the earth, the mountains, prairies, rivers, and forests. I made the people and all the animals. This is why I say I alone am the chief. I can never die. True, the winter makes me old and weak, but every summer I grow young again.” Then said the Sun: “What one of all animals is smartest? The raven is, for he always finds food. He is never hungry. Which one of all the animals is most Nat-o’-ye? The buffalo is. Of all animals, I like him best. He is for the people. He is your food and your shelter. What part of his body is sacred? The tongue is. That is mine. What else is sacred? Berries are. They are mine too. Come with me and see the world.” He took Scarface to the edge of the sky, and they looked down and saw it. It

is round and flat, and all around the edge is the jumping-off place [or walls straight down]. Then said the Sun: “When any man is sick or in danger, his wife may promise to build me a lodge, if he recovers. If the woman is pure and true, then I will be pleased and help the man. But if she is bad, if she lies, then I will be angry. You shall build the lodge like the world, round, with walls, but first you must build a sweat house of a hundred sticks. It shall be like the sky [a hemisphere], and half of it shall be painted red. That is me. The other half you will paint black. That is the night.” Further said the Sun: “Which is the best, the heart or the brain? The brain is. The heart often lies, the brain never.” Then he told Scarface everything about making the Medicine Lodge, and when he had finished, he rubbed a powerful medicine on his face, and the scar disappeared. Then he gave him two raven feathers, saying: “These are the sign for the girl, that I give her to you. They must always be worn by the husband of the woman who builds a Medicine Lodge.” The young man was now ready to return home. Morning Star and the Sun gave him many beautiful presents. The Moon cried and kissed him, and called him “my son.” Then the Sun showed him the short trail. It was the Wolf Road (Milky Way). He followed it, and soon reached the ground. It was a very hot day. All the lodge skins were raised, and the people sat in the shade. There was a chief, a very generous man, and all day long people kept coming to his lodge to feast and smoke with him. Early in the morning this chief saw a person sitting out on a butte near by, close wrapped in his robe. The chief’s friends came and went, the sun reached the middle, and passed on, down towards the mountains. Still this person did not move. When it was almost night, the chief said: “Why does that person sit there so long? The heat has been strong, but he has never eaten nor drunk. He may be a stranger; go and ask him in.” So some young men went up to him, and said: “Why do you sit here in the great heat all day? Come to the shade of the lodges. The chief asks you to feast with him.” Then the person arose and threw off his robe, and they were surprised. He wore beautiful clothes. His bow, shield, and other weapons were of strange make. But they knew his face, although the scar was gone, and they ran ahead, shouting, “The scarface poor young man has come. He is poor no longer. The scar on his face is gone.” All the people rushed out to see him. “Where have you been?” they asked. “Where did you get all these pretty things?” He did not answer. There in the crowd stood that young woman; and taking the two raven feathers from his head, he gave them to her, and said: “The trail was very long, and I nearly died, but by those Helpers, I found his lodge. He is glad. He sends these feathers to you. They are the sign.” Great was her gladness then. They were married, and made the first Medicine Lodge, as the Sun had said. The Sun was glad. He gave them great age. They were never sick. When they were very old, one morning, their children said: “Awake! Rise and eat.” They did not move. In the night, in sleep, without pain, their shadows had departed for the Sand Hills.

Book Reviews For the restless mind

Elodie Caron The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein This is the story of Enzo, the loyal and beloved dog of Denny, a small-time race car driver. Denny has the intuition of a champion, but the luck of a loser. Not long after he brings Enzo home, as a small, adorable Retriever puppy, Denny meets Eve, the woman he will marry and start a family with. And not long after that, things start to fall apart. The story is narrated by Enzo, so the human drama is seen through his lens, and it’s an interesting twist on the usual storytelling. Enzo watches a lot of tv when he’s home alone and while he’s able to see and listen to what goes on around him, he doesn’t always understand it. It’s his fierce love for Denny that helps him protect his family, even when he’s not sure what the danger is. I did like Denny enough to want him to have a happily ever after, but the guy has nothing but bad luck and tragedy, and the last third of the book is a slog through all of the misfortune, just hoping for a reward at the end. I’d recommend it, but be aware that it’s not all puppies and candy.

A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby Nick Hornby is most well-known for his more movie-friendly novels, like High Fidelity and An Education. His writing style is the kind of razor sharp human dialogue that almost every modern author aspires to, and few achieve. His characters are able to articulate the thoughts and emotions that we all are affected by, but somehow unable to express. It’s the Hornby trademark, and in A Long Way Down, it’s evident, but too well hidden. Jess, Martin, Maureen and JJ are all strangers, thrown together by a peculiar fate. They all meet on the roof of Toppers House, an infamous London building where people go to throw themselves off. One by one, they all lose their nerve, but when they become headline news, they find it hard to go back to the lives they wanted to be rid of in the first place, and impossible to be around anyone who doesn’t understand what happened to them. And that’s pretty much it. There’s almost no plot, just a lot of overlapping internal monologues and foreshadowing that never pays off. Every few pages someone says something like, “if only I’d know what was going to happen next” and you think something’s about to go down, but no, once again it’s just a misunderstanding that’s easily cleared up two pages later. Not a lot of payoff for sticking with these people past the first few chapters, is what I’m saying. If you’re interested in Nick Hornby, I’d say try High Fidelity instead.

Book Reviews For the restless mind

LeeAnne Sicker & Rachel Paris Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett This novel is centred on the building of the Kingsbridge Cathedral during the early twelfth century. The story becomes a tapestry of the lives of the people in the community, the rich and the poor and the good and evil. For example, we learn about Tom Builder, a stonemason who is destitute before becoming the master builder on the cathedral project. Phillip is the prior of a small monastery in the forest before becoming prior of Kingsbridge. William Hamleigh is a mere knight before becoming the Lord of Shiring. They lead complex relationships of honour and betrayal that takes the characters through violence, triumphant, disappointment and accomplishment. I loved this book and could not put it down, even when it was two o’clock in the morning and I had to work the next day! This is a must read for anyone that loves a good historical fiction. If you get really addicted they have also made a mini-series based on the characters.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer My advice: judge a book by its cover. If I hadn’t been drawn to the shining eyeball on the cover of “The Host”, I probably would never have known it existed. If you’re a fan of the ultra famous “Twilight” series, chances are you’re going to love Stephenie Meyer’s latest novel. While Meyers writing style drives me up the wall, what with her drawn out three-page explanations, her ability to create characters and story lines that are compelling and fascinating suck me in every time. With “The Host” Meyer’s has been successful crossing over into science fiction just enough to keep her fan base engaged. Basing the novel in enough reality, “The Host” tells the story of Earth not as we know it, but how it could be – cue spooky music. Humans as we know them have become an endangered species. All but a few have had their minds and bodies invaded by an alien species intent on changing the planet one soul at a time. One tiny pocket of resistance remains and Melanie Stryder is determined to find them so she can rejoin her family. Melanie however has been captured and finds herself fighting the battle for survival from inside her own mind. “The Host” is a compelling read as it avoids the obvious sci-fi clichés and concentrates on the human emotions that surface when extinction is knocking on your door. Meyer’s made “The Host” a great read, and she did it without any alluring vampires or werewolves; makes me wonder – what’s next? NEW TRIBE AUGUST 2010

See You at the Movies

SMA LL*SCREEN

By Elodie Caron

Starring: Michael Angarano, Jemaine Clement, Jennifer Coolidge, Mike White, Sam Rockwell For those of you who saw Napoleon Dynamite, Gentlemen Broncos is kind of like that, except where Napoleon Dynamite was kind of bizarre, Gentlemen Broncos is deeply, deeply weird. This means that if it’s not really your thing, you’re going to hate it. A lot. Instead of describing it, I’m going to give you some key words and phrases: albino snake, nightgowns, yeast lords, geodesic dome, surveillance does (as in deer) and Utah.

Gentlemen Broncos

I know, that didn’t help much, did it? Okay, a few more words: it’s about Benjamin (Angarano), a kid who lives with his fashion designer mom (Coolidge) and writes science fiction in his spare time. His most recent novel, Yeast Lords, is submitted for a fiction contest judged by Ronald Chevalier, a once great author whose star is fading. The Yeast Lords story is actually used as an accompanying sort of film-within-the-film, starring Sam Rockwell as Bronco/Brutus, the hero, who fights the evil Lord Daysius, sometimes with his trusty bobcat sidekick, sometimes not. I have to admit that I loved Napoleon Dynamite, so I did laugh out loud a few times watching Gentlemen Broncos. Maybe I’m more open to the weirdness. I’m significantly less enthusiastic about the amount of poop involved, but nothing’s perfect.

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Liev Schrieber, Chiwetel Ejiofor Evelyn Salt, who is she, really? Even she doesn’t seem to know. Angelina Jolie brings her ass kicking boots to this one, as a CIA operative who may be a double agent for Mother Russia. She’s outed by an informant and forced to go on the run from the men in black, crazy stunts and all. Like all spy movies, there are a lot of twists and turns. I thought I had it figured out in the first 20 minutes and I was totally wrong, which is refreshing. It’s been a long time since Russia and the United States were engaged in the infamous Cold War, but after the recent arrest and deportation of a sleeper cell of Russian spies who had lived in the suburbs of America for nearly ten years, Salt manages to be pretty timely. I bet a lot of people looked at their neighbors differently after seeing this one.

Salt

There are some problems with the plot, like how easily Salt’s family life is introduced and then quietly erased, even though it seems like we’re supposed to care more about it, so it comes off more as an afterthought. Overall, though, it’s a good hour and a half of entertainment.
