CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS American Cancer Society The Southern New England Region of the ACS serves all of Fairfield, Litchfield, and New Haven Counties from its office at 38 Richards Avenue, Norwalk CT 06854. ACS provides educational programs and information on cancer and cancer prevention; offers support services for persons who have cancer; and raises money for research and other programs relating to cancer. American Heart Association The American Heart Association has offices at 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford CT 06492. The group provides educational programs throughout the state, and supports nationwide programs of medical training and research, with the mission to reduce disability and death from heart disease and stroke. AHA is the nation’s largest nonprofit, voluntary health organization fighting heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. American Legion members are wartime veterans “getting involved” in people helping people, veterans working together for their country, community, youth programs, and veteran affairs. American Red Cross, Connecticut Region Office is at 7 Parklawn Drive in Berkshire Corp Park, Bethel CT 06801. Chairman, Elizabeth Gagne; CEO, Dianne Auger. This nonprofit organization relies on volunteers. It conducts blood drives in the area, including in Newtown at local businesses, churches, and Newtown High School. Other services include disaster relief, health, first aid, CPR, water safety, life guarding, HIV/AIDS education, service to military families, the Lifeline personal emergency response system, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), a motor vehicle donation program, and the Wheels transportation program. Animal Center The Animal Center is an all volunteer, nonprofit animal welfare charity. Since its founding in 2004, The Animal Center has rescued and found homes for more than 1,800 dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies, many of which were special needs animals. Animal Center officials have accomplished this entirely through a grassroots foster network while working toward the dream of building a sanctuary where all creatures, large and small, are rescued, respected, and loved. The Animal Center is a 501 (c)(3) publicly supported charity and relies heavily on the support of the public and volunteers.
