Border Dispute

Roseanne Di Guilio, who has lived in a house that straddles the New York-Connecticut line since 1997, was surprised to learn that she no longer owns the half of her house on the New York side because her mortgage servicer failed to pay property taxes. Di Guilio said she was never notified, nor did she know that Putnam County foreclosed on the property. Her neighbor, Althea Jacob, bought the 0.2 acres at county auction in 2010 for $275 and now owns Di Guilio’s living room, kitchen and sun porch and part of her bathroom. Jacob never told Di Guilio, who continued paying upkeep and insurance until she found out the truth. Jacob then offered to sell her back the property for $150,000. She lowered her asking price to $35,000, but Di Guilio sought to have the New York Supreme Court overturn the foreclosure. The outcome is uncertain because she didn’t bring the action within the two-year statute of limitations. (Westchester County’s The Journal News)

Organizers of Britain’s National Union of Students (NUS) Women’s Conference asked delegates to use jazz hands instead of clapping to avoid “triggering anxiety.” The aim, delegate Nona Buckley-Irvine explained, is “to show appreciation of someone’s point without interrupting or causing disturbance.” Gee Linford-Grayson agreed. “Plus,” she added, “who doesn’t like jazz hands?” (BBC News)

Obvious Solution

California’s death row, the country’s largest, has run out of room. With 738 inmates in lethal limbo since a court invalidated the state’s lethal injection method nearly a decade ago, Gov. Jerry Brown asked the state Legislature for more than $3 million to open 100 new cells for condemned men at San Quentin Prison, which already has 715 inmates facing execution. Brown’s request, the Los Angeles Times said, “anticipates an average of 20 new arrivals on death row yearly” without a decrease in the existing condemned population. (NPR)

The Rev. Shaun O. Prosecutors said Harrison shot the youth in the back of the head in Roxbury, Mass. The victim survived. Harrison denied charges stemming from the shooting, but Suffolk Assistant District Attorney David Bradley said a surveillance system at a nearby business recorded the episode. PEN PALS TIRED OF THE BAR SCENE, SEEK OUTSIDE AMOUR

For the single lady in search of a man, the pickings can be mighty slim, especially around here, where any dude with valid plates and a toothbrush gets snatched up like shares of Berkshire Hathaway. But to give up hope would be a big mistake. It’s just time to think inside the box. Happily, the escaped murderers of Dannemora’s Clinton Correctional Facility — one dead, one back in custody after three weeks — didn’t suffer all those bug bites, lacerations and soiled underpants for nothing. Through their alleged manipulation of a lovesick prison worker, Joyce Mitchell, the duo served notice to available (and not-so-available) women that if you know how to work the system, the supply of eligible men is endless. These bachelors just need someone to believe in them. And maybe a hacksaw and three-speed DeWalt hammer-drill. Times like these are when the Internet is immensely helpful. On the website WriteAPrisoner.com, I easily located dozens of promising men looking for a new lady friend. The options below are a tiny sampling of what’s out there, which is kind of terrifying. But isn’t love always a risk? You must be 18 or older to correspond.

Brett Archer, age 37

#09-A-3244 Shawangunk C.F. P.O. Box 700 Wallkill, NY 12589 Born in the West Indies, Brett is searching for a “Ms. Non-Judgmental.” (Good luck with that, pal.) He enjoys music and traveling, although “traveling is on pause for the moment.” He also enjoys writing — and nursing grudges. “I’ve been in prison for eight years now and every friend I thought was loyal have (sic) yet to be seen or heard, but they fail to realize that my release date is far sooner than expected.” Is it, Brett? According to the Department of Corrections, the soonest the attempted murderer can get out is June 1, 2026. Sounds like Brett might be itching for a little Shawangunk Redemption. Wink.

Bryon Drennan, age 43

#09-B-3404 Clinton C.F., P.O. Box 2000 Dannemora, NY 12929 Bryon bleeds Orange, but his wife bled red when he bludgeoned and stabbed her to death on Thanksgiving Day and buried her on a rocky Lake Ontario beach. Now he’s in for life, and getting restless. “I enjoy the beauty of the world and miss it,” he waxes. He describes himself as “family orientated,” athletic and a devotee of the Toronto Blue Jays, Buffalo Sabers and Syracuse University basketball. Thanks, Bryon! Suddenly, phony term papers don’t seem like such a big deal. If you’re a woman who loves sports, nature, playing board games and watching movies (mostly action and comedy), this hunk could change your life — by shortening it.

Roger Devodier Jr., age 51

#09A4972 Great Meadow C.F. P.O. Box 51 Comstock, NY 12821 “Hello to all the ladies here and abroad” begins Devodier’s solicitation. Known simply as “Rog,” this possible lifer lives his to the fullest. He loves music, sports, fitness, travel, writing, reading and even cooking. He touts his “wonderful relationship with God” but says he’s more spiritual than religious. He’s a Gemini. He’s looking for a woman who is “bubbly, has a touch of class and a great sense of humor.” He also wants affectionate, adventure-loving and easy to get along with. Long list. He’s in for attempted robbery and grand larceny. “We never know what God’s plan is,” he says. The bigger question is: Does Rog have a flight plan — and how desperate are you to be part of it?

Martin Kimber, age 62

#19726-052 Otisville Federal Correctional Institution P.O. Box 1000 Otisville, NY 10963 You can’t help but admire any solicitation from prison that begins: “Hello: I am a pharmacist.” Hmmmm. Martin, a first-time prisoner, works out four hours a day, and it shows. He looks awesome in his WriteAPrisoner.com photo compared to his bedraggled booking photo. He is studying French and German and also loves gardening and “the variety of people in Europe.” His crime, which he describes only as “vandalistic activity,” was maybe a bit more serious than that. He spread mercury at Albany Medical Center on four occasions because he was pissed about the amount of his hospital bill. Obamacare whiffs again. Martin says he’s “making the best” of prison, but at 62, with his earliest release date not until 2024, he could be easy pickings for a cerebral honey who knows her way around a chemistry lab and likes to, ahem, travel. MENU GETS BEEFED UP AT OWERA VINEYARDS

P

eanut butter and jelly; fish and chips; beer and pizza; wine and cheese. Wine and food, period. Wine tastes better when it’s partnered with good food. That’s the driving force behind the new small plates menu at Owera Vineyards in Cazenovia.

Owera, which opened in 2013, has a stunning tasting room with a long, rustic wood bar, windows overlooking the wine-making facility and a corner cafe area with a wood-fired pizza oven. Until earlier this month, the food offerings were limited to mostly brick oven artisan pizza. Customers were asking for more, says marketing manager Katie Meehan. In April, Robert Potter joined Owera as executive chef. He comes to Owera from the TS Steakhouse at Verona’s Turning Stone Resort and Casino. One of Potter’s first tasks was to develop a new small plates menu that spotlights Owera’s own grass-fed beef, as well as produce and herbs grown on site. The menu is small, with a few items designed for sharing. There’s an artisan cheese board, for example, and a Mediterranean board with hummus, tzatziki, olives and house-roasted marinated red peppers, served with warm pita bread. Small plates include beet chips (crispy, deep-fried beet rounds, topped with honey goat cheese) and steak crostini topped with garlic-herb cheese spread, arugula and Owera’s own steak.

Foundation for the crostini is bread from Rise, a Cazenovia bakery that bakes its boules, ciabatta and other specialty breads at Owera. The beef also shows up in a braised beef selection, served with polenta. It also will be used in seasonal offerings and specials. Later this summer, the gazpacho (a chilled, tomato soup) will feature tomatoes from Owera’s garden. Enjoy it on its own, with a garden salad or with a plate of Rise bread, served with olive oil for dipping. The menu also features five pizzas, including a classic Margherita pizza (olive oil, tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, topped with basil and balsamic glaze) and a spicy meatball pizza with meatballs made with Owera’s beef. Owera’s tasting room staff can suggest wine pairings. There’s also a selection of craft beers and hard cider on tap. Owera Vineyards is at 5276 E. Lake Road, Cazenovia. Tasting room and cafe hours are Wednesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For details, call 815-4311 or visit oweravineyards.com.

The New York Wine and Culinary Center in Canandaigua has added a food truck that can be found at events across the region and state this summer. The menu reflects the fare available at the center’s Upstairs Bistro, which spotlights seasonal and local foods. Menu highlights include house-smoked barbecue pulled pork piled on a brioche roll; a PBLT panini (pork belly, lettuce and tomato); a Cuban sandwich made with roasted turkey and smoked pork belly, garnished with housemade pickles; and a marinated vegetable sandwich served on grilled pita. The Upstairs Bistro Food Truck has been showing up at concerts and other events, as well as at wineries and breweries in the Finger Lakes. For a schedule of events and appearances, visit nywcc.com/ foodtruck or keep track of the food truck at facebook.com/NYWCC. The food truck is also available for private events.

Bakehouse Relocates to Drumlins

Pascale Bakehouse has joined parent restaurant Pascale Italian Bistro at Drumlins. The Bakehouse takes the storefront spot in the center of the Drumlins building, a short walk from the restaurant. The menu features coffee, breads, scones, cupcakes, cookies and other baked goods, including the ever-popular bete noir (flourless chocolate) cake. The only thing missing from the former Fayetteville location is a cafe lunch menu. Drumlins is at 800 Nottingham Road, DeWitt. Pascale Bakehouse is open daily, 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 446-8511, Ext. 365, or visit pascalebakehouse.com. SNT

MARK HOFFMANN 10

07.01.15 - 07.07.15 | syracusenewtimes.com

Local guitar guru reveals his rockin’ resume to music writer Jessica Novak

A

s a fixture of the Syracuse music scene for more than five decades, guitarist-vocalist Mark Hoffmann has been involved in major productions (such as the Salt City Waltz and Beatlecuse) and was inducted into the Syracuse Area Music Awards (Sammy) Hall of Fame in 2008. Yet his legacy goes far beyond the city limits.

MEMORIES OF MARK

“I was involved with the band from 1968 to 1970. Mark is a superb guitar player. He sang background very well and developed into a lead singer, so he’s really multitalented. The music Jam Factory was playing was really with the times. Blood, Sweat and Tears, Chicago, Sly and the Family Stone, they were all around and doing similar things. Today, the Hoffmann Family Band is a lot of fun. They’re a very talented family and I remember when they (Gus and Anna) were born. Mark, as a musician, has really developed to be so versatile, and he’s always been a really, really nice guy. He always has a kind word to say about everybody and he’s always been like that.” — Joe Leonard, former manager of Jam Factory

Mark Hoffmann (center), flanked by son Gustav and Byron Cage (above); Hoffmann with his partner Jo Anne Bakeman (right). Michael Davis photos

Chicago-born but Syracuse-raised, Hoffmann grew up in a musical family. His father played guitar, violin and concertina, while his mother sang. Hoffmann started taking lessons on guitar at age 8. “Some of my earliest memories of childhood were banging around on the guitar,” he recalls. “I was making noise but having fun doing it. And I wanted to get good at it.” He played in bands during high school and found himself entrenched in the burgeoning folk scene in the early 1960s. “I played a place called Cap’n Mac’s Clam Snug,” he says. “I was a regular there with my high school chum Lou Martin, who went on to record and be a world-class mandolin player.” Following his graduation from Fayetteville-Manlius High School in 1964, Hoffmann attended Union College in Schenectady. Yet he would often travel back to Syracuse to perform with The Sidewinders, a 12-piece horn band that included drummer-pianist Howie Wyeth, who went on to play with Bob Dylan and the Rolling Thunder Revue. As The Sidewinders eventually morphed into Jam Factory, Hoffmann decided to dedicate his time to the band instead of college. The group, which often played six nights a week, also featured Gene McCormick (lead vocals, saxophone, keyboards), Earl V. Ford Jr. (trombone), Kent DeFelice (bass and vocals), Joe English (drums and lead vocals) and Steve Marcone (trumpet and vibes). Band manager Joe Leonard hooked them up with an agency in New York City and by 1969 they were signed to Epic. The six-piece band had a sound similar to Sly and the Family Stone. Lively and funky, punctuated by horns and accented by the kind of grooves that withstand the test of time, Jam Factory’s 1971 Epic album Sittin’ in the Trap has a sound that’s still relevant in 2015. Back then, it was also a sound that garnered them significant attention from those at the top of the music business. “We heard later that Sly had come down to check us out,” Hoffmann recalls. “We did this show and when we came into the dressing room, there was John Hammond Sr. He was a legend in the business,

discovering people like Bessie Smith, Bruce Springsteen, involved with Aretha Franklin. He walked in and my jaw dropped immediately. I went over and shook his hand and it was like an ‘I’m not worthy’ kind of thing. It turns out he was very instrumental in signing us to the label. He said, ‘It’s really nice to meet you. I really enjoy your music and I’m looking forward to having you on the label. And I’d like to introduce you to my friend, Jane Fonda.’ She was sitting right next to him and I didn’t even see her.” The band toured in support of the album (which included an opener spot for Sly and the Family Stone’s concert at the Onondaga County War Memorial) and found themselves opening for the era’s rock royalty. They played Fillmores East and West with bands like Hot Tuna and opened for Iron Butterfly and Janis Joplin. “We did this one show in Philly with Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, the Steve Miller Band and Cactus,” Hoffmann recalls. “There must have been 30,000 people there. It was an amazing show.” Hoffmann’s bandmate McCormick had grown up in Orlando, also putting him in the same time and place as the Allman Brothers Band. “We were friends and would run into them around the country,” Hoffmann says. When some of the band decided to move south, they ended up living on the Allman farm. Even wilder, English ended up marrying Dickie Betts’ ex-wife. When Paul McCartney was searching for a drummer to play with Wings, he asked Allman Brothers beat-keeper Jaimoe for assistance. “Paul called Jaimoe and said, ‘I’m looking for somebody who is funky,’” Hoffmann says. “And Jaimoe says, ‘I got the guy for you sitting right next to me (Joe English).’ Paul says, ‘Put him on a plane.’” Hoffmann stayed with Jam Factory from 1967 to

“I met Mark in Lake George when the band was still The Sidewinders. I was living in Boston, took the job (with the band) for the summer and I ended up staying with them and not going back. I would not have taken the job or stayed with the band had I thought less of them. And now, what’s cooler than playing with your family? I played with them in January. He’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever worked with in my entire life. I’ve been in this business for a long, long time. He’s just as sweet as he was the day I met him and a very accomplished musician.” — Earl V. Ford Jr., trombone player of Jam Factory

“It didn’t matter what band he was in — a pickup gig, with The Sidewinders, sitting in — people have always wanted him to stop by and play. There’s nothing he can’t play and he always fills an important void, whether it’s backup vocals or lead guitar. There were times we’d go out seven times in a week and he’d sit in with a different band every night: Thursday playing jazz, Saturday playing blues and bluegrass with a band on a Sunday afternoon. And he’s done some wonderful things musically in Central New York: jingles, a song for the Special Olympics he sang with Anna when she was very young, a song for my campaign in 1984. He’s a modest man, but he’s done lots and lots of things. He can fill any role.” — Sen. Nancy Larraine Hoffmann, Hoffmann’s first wife

1974. Following the split, he put his roots down in Syracuse with several groups including Magic Fingers and the Mary Haitz Band. In 1971 he married Nancy Larraine Hoffmann, who was in the state Senate from 1985 to 2003, and they had three children, daughters Eva and Anna and son Gustav. “In the 1960s, he was right there with all the major bands,” recalls now ex-wife Nancy Larraine Hoffmann. “He went to California and New York, Nashville and Macon. All the musicians wanted him to be a part of their activities. There’s no doubt he could have done some of that big-time life on the road, but when the time came and they asked, he said no because he loved being here in Syracuse with his family. He valued his family life more.” Hoffmann worked for the Syracuse University Audio Archives and later for WTVH-Channel 5 as a sound engineer and cameraman for 28 years. “During those TV years, I didn’t really have the band because I was working TV hours,

all the night and weekend shifts,” he says. “But thank God for all the blues bands in town because they said, ‘Just come out after the 11 o’clock news and sit in on the last set.’ That kept me from going insane.” More recently, Hoffmann is enjoying retirement, but is far from retiring from music. He continues to play in groups like Swing This! with his partner Jo Anne Bakeman, Rebecca Keefe, Bob Purdy and Joe Davoli. He also plays with Gus and Anna in the Hoffmann Family Band. “I don’t know how much longer I’ll have with either of them around; they could split in a heartbeat,” he says. “So I’m anxious to play as much as possible with them. There is certainly nothing better than playing with your own family. It’s so exciting. And we get into some righteous grooves and funk. That was the thing about Jam Factory. We weren’t a jam band — they weren’t calling bands that then — but a song would turn into a 15-minute marathon. We still love to do that.” SNT

Child star Jackie Coogan at the Hotel Syracuse circa 1924.

PINT-SIZE GUEST FOR BIG-TIME HOTEL

O

ne of the hot topics in recent weeks has been the coming together of plans to launch the long-anticipated restoration and reuse of the Hotel Syracuse, slated to reopen in 2016 as the Marriott Downtown Syracuse.

The hotel is one of those grand lodging edifices that were built in the early 20th century, before the Great Depression, World War II and the birth of interstates and suburban sprawl put an end to downtown buildings of that grandeur. The Onondaga Historical Association Museum pays tribute to the historic venue in the current exhibit Lodging Landmark: The Heritage of the Hotel Syracuse. When the hotel was about to open in 1924, there was great anticipation in the community. Hotel management hosted a formal opening banquet in the Terrace Dining Room (now known as the Persian Terrace) as the 11th-floor Grand Ballroom was not quite finished. But who would the first official guest be? Management wanted a public relations triumph, perhaps the president or maybe the governor. Instead, the hotel landed “The Kid,” better known as child actor Jackie Coogan. Forty years later, Coogan would achieve TV immortality as Uncle Fester in the 1960s black-comedy series The Addams Family. Yet during the Roaring ’20s, the 6-year-old Coogan had achieved movie fame when he co-starred in the sentimental silent

classic The Kid, written, produced, directed and edited by its leading man, Charlie Chaplin. Aside from his national star status at the time, Coogan had strong Syracuse connections. His family had resided here for several generations and in 1924 his grandparents still lived at 210 Wayne St., a house that still stands. Jackie’s father, John Henry Coogan Jr., was a vaudeville performer who traveled the circuit, but the family was often based in Syracuse. Jackie was actually born in Los Angeles, but he and his family lived in Syracuse for several months, during the 1917-1919 period, with his grandparents on Wayne Street. Jackie’s family was back in Los Angeles in 1920 as his career was taking off. Coogan was cast in other child roles in more films during the 1920s, but his career waned as he grew older. After his father’s death in a 1935 auto accident, Coogan sought some of the $4 million fortune he had already earned. Unfortunately, his mother and her new husband had the rights to it. He had to sue but gained only a relatively small out-of-court settlement of $126,000. The incident resulted in California legislation in 1939 to protect the earnings of child

stars, still known as the Coogan Act. He remained a Hollywood figure, however, in part due to his brief marriage in 1937 to actress Betty Grable. During World War II Coogan served in the Pacific Theater as the Army pilot of a troop transport glider. He appeared in uniform in Syracuse for a special bond drive and morale-boosting campaign during late 1944. Coogan’s career seemed over in the 1950s as he took bit parts, but he rose to prominence again with his zany portrayal of Uncle Fester in the popular Addams Family sitcom from 1964 to 1966. After that, he would continue making appearances as a character actor on TV shows and a handful of movies. Coogan reunited with Chaplin in 1972, when the Little Tramp was presented with an honorary Academy Award. When they met at an airport, the elderly Chaplin whispered in Coogan’s ear, “I think I would rather see you than anyone else.” Coogan passed away in 1984 at age 69. Ironically, even though he signed a guest card as the first official guest at the Hotel Syracuse in 1924 and posed in a hotel room bed removing his shoes, he reportedly did not actually stay overnight in the hotel. The original special Coogan guest card is currently on view at the Onondaga Historical Association Museum, 321 Montgomery St., along with the opening banquet menu (ginger ale was served, as Prohibition was the law in 1924), other artifacts and several historic images of the hotel. Lodging Landmark: The Heritage of the Hotel Syracuse runs through Aug. 2. SNT Dennis Connors is curator of history at the Onondaga Historical Association.

ALTARED STATES FOR SAME-SEX DUOS

Tristan and Max Madden were among the first to arrive Friday, June 26, at CNY Pride’s rally at First English Lutheran Church. The couple, who married in Maryland in 2011, were thrilled at the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling making same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states. “I never expected this to happen,” Tristan Madden said. The court ruling makes their upcoming move to Tennessee easier. Tennessee voters in 2006 approved an amendment to the state constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman. That law is now void. “We didn’t know what would happen with visitation rights and insurance,” Tristan Madden said. “Now there won’t be a problem.” The Maddens — along with their 2-year-old daughter, Lillian Madden; and Tristan’s son, 7-year-old Edmund Maire — were among a jubilant crowd that grew to about 150 people outside the church at Townsend and James streets. On a sunny, early summer evening, the group shared hugs, smiles and rainbows as rush-hour traffic passed. Rally participants waved rainbow flags at drivers — most of them (including someone in a Syracuse Police Department car) honking their horns and waving. Unlike many past gay pride events in Syracuse, no protesters attended. Harry Freeman-Jones, a Syracuse artist and activist who drew national attention with his 1973 marriage to Bob Jones in a Boston church, smiled and nodded during the rally. He described the beginning of the gay rights movement as “spaghetti dinners in musty church basements” where “people got to know each other’s stories.” The last few years have been a whirlwind of rapidly changing public opinion and legal support for gay marriage, he noted. “We always hoped this would happen, but I certainly didn’t think it would be in my lifetime,” said Freeman-Jones, 68. “It’s a totally different world. I’m so happy about it.” The rally was outside the Archimedes Russell-designed First English Lutheran Church. It’s a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, which in 2009 voted to allow congregations to recognize and bless same-sex unions.

Rev. A.J. Striffler, pastor of First English Lutheran Church.

First English Lutheran, which calls itself a welcoming church, hosted the CNY Pride Interfaith Service on June 16. Rev. A.J. Striffler, First Lutheran’s pastor, quoted what he called “amazing words” from the Supreme Court ruling: “Marriage embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family.” The ruling, Striffler said, “recognizes gays and lesbians as full citizens of this land.” The Rev. Peter Williams, a former Catholic priest who now pastors Grace Episcopal and Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Cortland, said it’s important for faith communities to support gays and lesbians. “People are still being killed for being gay,” he said. “It’s important for people to know we support human rights for all people.” While reveling in the day’s news, speakers noted work toward equality continues. They described battles ahead in housing and employment discrimination. The next target, they said, is to get New York’s Legislature to pass GENDA (Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act), which would expand the state’s hate law to explicitly include crimes against transgender people. Syracuse passed its own GENDA law in 2012. The state Assembly has passed GENDA eight times; the Senate has never voted on it. “The world still needs some change,” said Kim Dill, executive director of Upstate SAGE, which supports older LGBTQ Central New Yorkers. “Who’s going to change it? You and I, like we made today possible.” SNT

ITALIAN DRESSING SPARKS MUSICAL

M

onastery by palazzo by piazza, Florence, Italy, packs in more sublime works of art than any other two square miles on earth. At Auburn’s Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, scenic designer David Arsenault’s gleaming marble-like set for The Light in the Piazza, dominated by a replica of Michelangelo’s David, flanked by white columns, reminds us of this.

REVIEW

Except for a moment in the second act when the action switches briefly to Rome, and he is covered by a map, we see David in every scene. We may know from the masterpiece what perfection is, but it is removed from us: We are not going see it in our lives. Although the Adam Guettel-Craig Lucas musical qualifies as a Broadway hit, many audiences will be surprised where it takes them. Well-to-do Southern matron Margaret Johnson (Sally Wilfert) and her beautiful blond daughter Clara (Heather Botts) are tourists in summer 1953. Both wear white gloves, as if they wished to keep their distance from an alien, Catholic, garlic-eating culture. Awkward with even the easiest Italian phrases, they would be figures of fun, but here their first duet is the celebratory “Statues and Stories.” Craig Lucas’ book, based on Elizabeth Spencer’s 1960 novella, is dilatory in giving us the reasons why mother and daughter are traveling. Director-choreographer Brett Smock is studiously coy in letting us see what the Johnsons would prefer to keep hidden.

Clara is not merely girlish and coltish; inside her lovely body stands a child who is not going to grow up. We sense that American schools and playgrounds have been torment to her. We will also see events sympathetically through the eyes of an interfering mother, as in Gypsy. Fate blows in quickly. A breeze blows off Clara’s hat and carries it across the piazza, where it is caught by an Italian man, Fabrizio Naccarelli (Nathan Gardner). The young people are instantly smitten. Attempting to head off inconvenient romance, Margaret steers her daughter toward the famed Uffizi Gallery, where Clara sings of her own deep yearnings, “The Beauty Is,” one of the show’s most affecting numbers. Before the act is over, the lovers are in a hotel room in the duet, “Say It Somehow.” Composer Adam Guettel is an acquired taste, better approached in performance than recording. The grandson of legendary Richard Rodgers and son of Mary Rodgers (Once Upon a Mattress), Guettel claims influences as wide as Stevie Wonder and Igor

Stravinsky, but especially British operatic composer Benjamin Britten. He will remind musical theater buffs of Stephen Sondheim and Jason Robert Brown. His music is infused with emotion, but it is never facile, even when the lovers come alive at first sight. Guettel’s score keeps The Light in the Piazza from becoming a “soap opera,” the words Leonard Maltin uses to dismiss the too-sweet 1962 movie version with Olivia de Havilland and Yvette Mimieux. Like his grandfather, Guettel composes music to embody the dynamics of the whole, not just to ornament it. The 1950s might have been an “innocent” time, but our eyes are open now. Naccarelli’s sisterin-law Franca (Tracy Ganem) warns Clara in “The Joy You Feel” that she can’t trust any husband. We also learn of the pain in the Johnson marriage from Margaret’s solo, “Dividing Day.” Margaret’s unloving husband Roy (Don Meehan Jr.), a cigarette manufacturer, claims that a married Clara would lack the maturity to be a mother herself, even putting aside differences in language and culture. Ah, but Craig Lucas’ book and Brett Smock’s direction never let us underestimate the allure of those Italians. Nathan Gardner’s Fabrizio is a compelling soloist (“Il Mondo era Vuoto” and “Passeggiata”) whose artistry does not shield us from his own maturity problems. Meanwhile, Fabrizio’s papa (Patrick Oliver Jones) embodies the masculine aestheticism missing in Margaret’s own mate, as in the duet, “Let’s Walk.” The Light in the Piazza, in its first regional production, looks like producing artistic director Smock’s seasonal calling card. Together with music director Jeff Theiss, lighting designer Dan Ozminkowski and costumer Lucy Brown, Smock’s artistic vision lifts you up, resolving your doubts as Margaret does in her final solo, “Fable.” SNT

SEX, DEUTSCH AND ROCK’N’ROLL

K

eith Richards famously observed, “Rock is music for the neck down.” Imperial Germany in 1891 was a society rapidly moving ahead scientifically and, intellectually, a nation that exalted the cranium. What lay below the neck was best not discussed, and when it was, it should be obedient and disciplined, tightened up and straightened.

Next door in Austria, Dr. Freud was scrutinizing all our organs, but in Germany the artist ready to celebrate the bodily and the carnal was playwright Frank Wedekind. His Spring Awakening, now thought a landmark in theatrical history, was heavily pounded by censors and not performed in Germany for 15 years. Less than 10 years ago composer Duncan Sheik and lyricist Steven Sater thought it sounded like the libretto of a rock opera. Their Tony-winning result is now at Ithaca’s Hangar Theatre. The original German-language Spring Awakening, a product of its time, is an Ibsenite problem play with heavy sets and clanking stage machinery. In the SheikSater version, only the costumes are retained. In the strictly repressive school, with gender segregation, the girls are in long dresses and most of the boys wear high top shoes and knickers. All the grief the youngsters suffer in spoken dialogue is of their time. But when they sing and dance, a sensibility from contemporary America goes back to inhabit them. And

16

the beat is throbbing and obsessive. At the beginning of the action, a girl going through puberty wonders aloud to her mother why her body is behaving this way and, while she’s at it, if storks really deliver babies. Wendla (Kelsey Lake, a blue-eyed reincarnation of Audrey Hepburn) launches the first act with “Mama Who Bore Me,” in the idiom of a golden age musical, perhaps by Lerner and Loewe. Moments later the other girls join her with the same words, now in the rock idiom of this show. Wendla’s mother (Sarah Dacey Charles) explains, guiltily, that to make babies a woman really just has to love her husband very much. Charles, with a long, Nordic face and prominent chin, plays all the adult women, some distinguished by a flourish. Round-faced Dane Cruz takes on all the adult men, some with facial hair, others with clerical collars. Cruz’s schoolmaster is a tyrant who terrorizes the boys with Latin recitation, where minor flubs invite corporal punishment. The class klutz Moritz (Johnny

Shea) fecklessly drops a line, prompting the class brain Melchior (Robert Ariza) to speak up on his behalf. He also reflects on the narrow injustice of it all in the solo “All That’s Known.” This favor invites Moritz to speak of the erotic dreams that have been plaguing him, which he fears are signs of mental disorders and derangement. Until Melchior, who’s done some reading in forbidden literature, tells him such dreams are widespread. The other boys join in with their dream narratives, and embarrassment to guilt-ridden Moritz, prompting the big production number, “The Bitch of Living,” probably the most widely known selection from the show. The official public policy of puritanism does not mean that all adults are well-behaved sexually, as Martha (Hanako Greensmith) admits that her father’s physical abuse of her includes sexual elements. erotic postcard, and all the students sing out their hunger for physical intimacy with the opposite sex in “Touch Me.” By the end of the first act, all this dramatic and sexual tension is resolved when Melchior and Wendla meet in a hayloft, as the combined male and female choruses support the lovers in the hymn-like “I Believe.” The second act, which sees Melchior and Wendla paying a price for their love-making, includes some of the strongest musical numbers, such as the “Blue Wind” solo by Ilse (Shea Renne), Melchior’s production number “Totally Fucked,” and Moritz, Melchior and Wendla’s trio, “Those You’ve Known.” Spring Awakening remains controversial. Despite eight Tony Awards, four Drama Desks, and a Grammy for the cast album, this dynamic Hangar production is likely to be the only one you’ll see in this part of the world. SNT

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny

ARIES (March 21-April 19) To determine

whether you are aligned with the cosmic flow, please answer the following questions. 1. Would you say that your current situation is more akin to treading water in a mosquito-ridden swamp, or conducting a ritual of purification in a clear mountain stream? 2. Have you been wrestling with boring ghosts and arguing with traditions that have lost most of their meaning? Or have you been transforming your past and developing a riper relationship with your roots? 3. Are you stuck in a gooey muck? Or are you building a flexible new foundation?

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Taurus singer

Sam Smith won four Grammys this year, largely on the strength of his hit single “Stay with Me.” The song has a lush gospel choir backing up his lead vocals, or so it seems. But in fact, every voice in that choir is his own. He recorded 20 separate harmony tracks that were woven together to create the big sound. What would be the equivalent in your world, Taurus? How could you produce a wealth of support for yourself? What might you do to surround yourself with a web of help and nourishment? How can you amplify and intensify your efforts so they have more clout? Now would be an excellent time to explore possibilities like these.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Born under the

sign of Gemini, Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) was a French painter who upset traditionalists. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he wasn’t interested in creating idealistic art based on historical and religious themes. He focused on earthy subjects about which he had direct experience, like the day-to-day lives of peasants and laborers. So even though he became a highly praised celebrity by his mid-30s,

CANCER (June 21-July 22) “I am trying to be

unfamiliar with what I am doing,” said composer John Cage in describing his creative process. That’s excellent counsel for you to meditate on, Cancerian. The less expertise and certainty you have about the rough magic you’re experimenting with, the more likely it is that this magic will lead you to useful breakthroughs. To bolster Cage’s advice and help you get the most from your period of self-reinvention, I offer you this quote from Picasso: “I imitate everyone except myself.”

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Your words of wisdom

come from Leo artist Andy Warhol: “Sometimes people let the same problem make them miserable for years, when they could just say, ‘So what.’ That’s one of my favorite things to say. ‘So what.’” Can I interest you in that approach, Leo? It has similarities to the Buddhist strategy of cultivating non-attachment -- of dropping your fixations about matters that can’t be controlled or changed. But I suspect you would draw special benefits from the breezy, devil-may-care spirit of Warhol’s version. So start there.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) In her late 20s, J.K. Rowling was a single mother living on welfare.

Pets of the Week

er-building phase of your astrological cycle. To take maximum advantage, convey the following message to your subconscious mind: “I know you will provide me with an abundance of insight, inspiration and energy for whatever intention I choose to focus on. And during the next four weeks, my intention will be to cultivate, expand and refine my personal power. I will especially focus on what author Stephen R. Covey called ‘the capacity to overcome deeply embedded habits and to cultivate higher, more effective ones.’”

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) I’m a big fan of science and logic and objective thinking. Most of us need more of that good stuff. The world would be a saner, safer place if we all got regular lessons on how to be more reasonable and rational. But in the immediate future, Scorpio, I’ll steer you in a different direction. I believe you will benefit from injecting your imagination with primal raw crazy wild mojo. For example, you might read utopian science fiction and fairy tales about talking animals and poetry

I hope the preceding serves as a pep talk, Virgo, reminding you that it’s never to late to instigate the project of a lifetime. The time between now and your birthday in 2016 will be an especially favorable phase to do so. Start ruminating on what it might be.

the arbiters of the art world tried to exclude him. For example, they denied him a place in Exposition Universelle, a major international exhibition in Paris. In response, Courbet built a temporary gallery next door to the main hall, where he displayed his own work. As you strive to get your voice heard, Gemini, I urge you to be equally cheeky and innovative. Buy yourself a megaphone or erect your own clubhouse or launch a new enterprise. Do you ever flirt with being a self-pitying martyr? Say bye-bye to that temptation. Cosmic forces are conspiring to relieve you of tendencies to act in any or all of those ways. I’m not saying you will instantly transform into a swashbuckling hero who knocks people over with your radiant self-assurance. But you will, at the very least, be ready to learn much, much more about how to wield your vulnerability as a superpower.
