Southwest News Media recognizes the challenges, celebrates with local businesses in ‘Best of the Best’ after difficult year

020. Need we say more? It was a year that pushed, tormented, and sometimes — broke us. But for many, it was the year that grounded us. It taught us grit, perseverance and the power of community. Local businesses were perhaps hit hardest by COVID-19 restrictions put in place to curb the spread of the virus. But they got creative, purchased new equipment to keep their customers safe, navigated government grants, worked on staffing models like they would a 1,000-piece puzzle and far too often were faced with difficult decisions. Many businesses built on passion and elbow grease, will never reopen, but fortunately for residents seeking services and enjoyment in the southwest metro, many are emerging in 2021 rejuvenated and more determined than ever, albeit more weathered. At Southwest News Media, we recognize and honor the work that goes into building a company and maintaining it day after day and what the business means for your family and your employees. We understand the challenges you’ve endured the last year. We’ve been telling stories about your triumphs and your tribulations — and those head-scratching moments where you’re
trying to figure out “what’s next?” — for more than a year and we will continue to give you a voice on our pages. “We’ve heard from many of our businesses about their struggles during the pandemic,” said Southwest News Media’s General Manager Laurie Hartmann. “It’s been sad to see some close permanently, but it’s also been encouraging to hear and see how local residents continued to support local businesses through online ordering, curbside pickup, and promoting them on social media.” Southwest News Media’s Best of the Best contest — an annual competition driven by voters — seeks to highlight the very best the southwest metro has to offer. While the last year has been challenging, said Hartmann, it has helped put the spotlight on the importance of local restaurants and retailers. “Many have been a mainstay of support for donations to our schools and other organizations, but they also enhance quality of life for local residents in terms of convenience and community identity.” This year’s contest — now in its fourth year — included 75 categories ranging from best burger to best orthodontist. Any business within the communities served by Southwest News Media (Chaska, Chanhassen, Victoria, Carver, Shakopee, Jordan, Belle Plaine, Prior Lake and Savage) was eligible to be nominated. This was a change from years past. “We have so many new residents moving into the area,” Hartmann said. “We thought it would not only be a great opportunity to introduce local businesses to those newcomers, being nominated

The second most-popular category was for best hair salon/ barber, which tied with best bar. The largest number of votes cast by age bracket was those ages 35-44. Nearly 75% of all voters were female. The top community participation, based on zip codes of participants were 1. Shakopee, 2. Chaska, 3. Prior Lake.
as one of the ‘Best of the Best’ would give a boost of support to all following a difficult year.” Once nominated, the business automatically appeared on the ballot in the appropriate category. Hartmann said while working on the Best of the Best competition, staff noticed “definite optimism” for the summer months as some of the state’s COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. “Many have expressed that business has picked up in the past month and they are looking forward to seeing their ‘regulars’ as the weather improves and more people are vaccinated,” she said. Southwest News Media is already thinking ahead to 2022. With nearly 32,000 votes cast in 2021, the Best of the Best contest has proven its popularity yet again. “Thank you to all who nominated businesses and voted in Best of the Best 2021!” Hartmann said.
