Goldbugs looking to capitalize on last season’s success

By Leslie Nation After ending their last season with a 5-5 record, the Alva High School Goldbugs are helmed by head coach Taylor Schwerdtfeger for the second year, and already opening the new season with a win against Blackwell in their season opener at home. Last season was a big confidence boost for this young team during their rebuilding year, making a good run all the way to the first round of the playoffs and ending their season against Luther. Though the Goldbugs lose some key players from last season, role players will be returning to the lineup to continue to build upon last year’s success. Probably the most notable absences are four wide receivers and go-to options, Tevin Long, Travis Costello, Brayden Gragg and Noah McOsker. The loss of throwing options isn’t the only change that the Goldbugs face, however. Though Austin Shklar returns to the starting lineup as a senior, he won’t be stepping back into his quarterback position that he started at the beginning of last season. Due to concussion injuries and a shoulder injury, Shklar will still take position in the backfield but as Alva’s starting running back, while last year’s running back, Hayden Colwell, returns as a wide receiver. In the QB position, sophSee Goldbugs Page 3 omore Mitchell Meyer – who

took over for Shklar last season during his injuries – returns with a little more experience. Though Meyer still struggles with pressure in the pocket, his quickness has proven to be one of his biggest assets, and that’s not saying he doesn’t have the arm to throw the deep ball. With time, Meyer should gain better accuracy, making him more of a threat in the air. As mentioned before, Colwell will be starting this year in his new position as one of Meyer’s top go-tos in the air, and after the Goldbugs’ match with Blackwell, Colwell has already proven to be a huge asset for Alva. Colwell’s speed and acceleration as Alva’s running back last year translates well into his new position as he picked up his first plus-100 receiving yards along with three touchdowns. As for Shklar, he has used his talent as a scrambling quarterback in his new role as running back to pick up over 100 rushing yards in the first game of the season as well as a touchdown. Other big contributors for the Goldbugs are Davion Murrow, Grant Ritter and a newcomer in T.W. Beiswanger. Murrow will be another receiver option as well as running back to give Shklar some much-needed rest. Ritter has already proven to be a big help in the passing game against Blackwell as Alva’s tight-end. Alva also returns some much-needed talent on the defensive side of the ball in linebackers Chase Jones and Kennedy McKnight, as well as lineman Justin Meyer and Ritter. Jones has always played with great intensity for the Goldbugs’ defense in the secondary, but McKnight has quickly stepped up to add more pressure on opposing offenses. Along with Jones and McKnight, Ritter and J. Meyer have already proven that they can cause problems for their opponent’s quarterback as J. Meyer picked up a big sack against Blackwell in their opener. Chiefs look to build depth this season By Leslie Nation Last year ended another great season for the Cherokee Chiefs as they finished with an 11-1 record, making it all the way to the state semifinals but losing to Coyle. One big change for the Chiefs is the venue where they will host their games. Last season they held their home games at Ranger Field in Alva while their new turf field was being renovated. Now that the field was finished during the off-season, the Chiefs will be holding their home games at home this year. Head coach Bryce Schanbacher enters his ninth season at the helm with an overall record of 77-18 and 18 lettermen return with him. Of those 18 returning, only four of them were starters during the 2015 season as the Chiefs said goodbye to 12 lettermen, seven starters total. All seven of those starters from the 2015 season were three-year starters for the Cherokee Chiefs including Austin Guffy, Cole Dewitt, Hunter Joran, Grant Wilber, Avery Bagenstos, Kolby Gilley and Nick Cochran. Despite those losses, Cherokee returns Jarrett James, Caleb Roberts, Garrett Padilla and Matt Lancaster to their starting lineup for the new season. James returns to the quarterback position after starting the first four games of last season, giving the Chiefs some needed experience in their offense. Both Roberts and Lancaster add more experience on the gridiron, as Roberts returns as a tight-end while Lancaster takes Guffy’s position

as running back. Coach Schanbacher describes his offense with a basic offensive line that’s not as fast as they’ve been in the past few years, but they still have size. The Chiefs’ size and work ethic are their two biggest strengths, according to Schanbacher, while the only concern he has for this season is the depth. Despite that concern, Coach Schanbacher states that they are ready for the new year. “We are very excited to start another season. This is a great group of young men.”

TIMBERLAKE HIGH SCHOOL TIGERS Timberlake HS Tigers Tigers battle a new 2016 football roster season to gain experience By Leslie Nation The Timberlake Tigers got the turnaround they wanted last season as they improved on their 3-7 season in 2014 to 7-5 to end the 2015 season. The Tigers were able to make it all the way to the quarterfinals before ending their year. Head Coach Brian Severin enters his 27th year to lead this young team along with Defensive Coordinator Garrett Powell, Defensive Back and Wide Receiver Coach Stetson Buller, and Lineman Coach Josh Wormon. The Tigers’ district members consist of Balko, Boise City, Buffalo, Kremlin-Hillsdale, Sharon-Mutual, Tyrone and Waynoka with Tyrone as Severin’s pick as the district favorite. The Tigers lose eight lettermen for the 2016 season, five starters on offense and six on defense. Three big leaders for both offense and defense are key loss-

es for Timberlake starting with Braden Buller their leading passer and rusher, Nick Blewitt a leading tackler for their defense, and Caleb Bishop an All-District defensive end for the Tigers. Despite those key losses, the Tigers do return three starters on offense and two on defense to give them some much-needed experience. Those returning starters are seniors Dylan Siler and Wyatt McCollum, and juniors Joey Najera and Utah Bishard. Key newcomers for the Tigers include Braydon Frech, Devon Kent, Alec Judd, Denton McCalister, Jake Thorp and Braxton Buller. Despite the lack of numbers and inexperience for the Tigers, Severin praised this young team for their quickness and IQ on the field. This will be a year to build that experience as well as add to their fundamentals.

NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA

2016 NWOSU Rangers football team. Photo by Leslie Nation

Northwestern ‘antsy’ to get their season underway

By Leslie Nation The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers football team open their second season as members of the Great American Conference (GAC) with head coach Matt Walters at the helm for Year Two with lots of confidence in his veteran team. Walter has described this 2016 roster as a bigger, more improved team with lots of depth ready to hit the gridiron. The Rangers return a whopping total of 91 student-athletes for the new season – six starters on offense and six on defense hoping to improve on their 3-8 record from last season. Rangers’ Defense The Northwestern Rangers made great strides with some talented players battling in the GAC. Leading this defense is lineman and senior Joby Saint Fleur who made First-Team All-GAC, First-Team All-Region and an Honorable Mention All-American. Saint Fleur led the conference in sacks with 10.5 to end the 2015 season establishing his presence against

the opposing offenses. He also made top three in tackles for loss (17) and fumbles forced (3). Defensive back Jordan Norris and linebacker Devin Peyton also return as All-Conference selections. Norris had a great junior year ending the last season with seven interceptions to lead the league, returning one for a touchdown against Henderson State in mid-September. Those seven interceptions tied Norris for fifth in Division II football. Peyton also put up impressive numbers to represent the Rangers last season, finishing second in the league in total tackles with 119 – 10.8 per game. Peyton’s sharp eyes also put as the conference leader in fumble recoveries with four. Other two big contributors for this Ranger defense last season was senior, defensive back Rontez Smith and red-shirt junior, strong safety Shane Collins. Smith ended his season with 56 total tackles – six for a loss of 36 total yards and three sacks. Collins ended his season as in the top three rangers with total tackles with 74 behind

Saint Fleur (77). Collins also picked up one interceptions for the Rangers. Rangers’ Offense Returning to the offensive side of the ball are another six starters including Arté Miura Jr., Scot Batchelder, Alva native Riley Hess, Reid Miller, Horatio Smith and Kenneth Stewart. Behind center for the Rangers is returning quarterback and senior Miller who had a great season for Northwestern despite only three wins, breaking eight NWOSU records. Those records include passing attempts (69), passing yards in a game (500), passing touchdowns in a game (6), passing attempts in a season (515), passing completions in a season (311), passing yards in a season (3,259), passing yards per game (296.3) and passing touchdowns in a season (30). Those impressive numbers for the then junior put up for a Harlan Hill candidacy – the most prestigious honor for football players in Division II. turns to the field for the new season after leading the Rangers with eight touchdowns last year. H. Smith trailed just behind with seven of his own, four of those were in their win over Southern Nazarene in late October. One of the Rangers top newcomers comes from Modesto Junior College, Anthony Cota, a California native to start for Northwestern in the running back position. Walters describes Cota as being “something special” for this offense, and will look to Cota to take a lot of pressure off Miller to open things up in the passing game. Northwestern opened their season on Ranger Field this year as they hosted the University of Arkansas-Monticello last Thursday. They’ll be on the road for their next two games in Arkansas before traveling back for two home games on Sept. 24 and Oct. 1.

Head Coach Cantrell has a whole lot of confidence in the Chieftains By Leslie Nation A new season starts with this experienced South Barber Chieftains team, and second-year Head Coach Matt Cantrell has every confidence that this team has the ability to make a good run for the 2016 season. Cantrell has even gone so far as to pick his team as his conference favorite in the Heart of the Plains Conference in eight-man division II football. Last season, the Chieftains finished the year with an overall record of 6-3 hoping to make their first playoff appearance since 2013. The Chieftains only lose two starters in linemen Kolton Pavlu and Tyler Martin. This season, South Barber returns 12 total lettermen, seven of them starters – six on offense and six on defense. Those key returners include an experienced quarterback with plenty of speed in Grant Cantrell. Cantrell ended last season with a total of 958 passing yards, 885 rushing yards, 13 passing touchdowns and 14 rushing touchdowns. He was even a big contributor on the defensive side of the ball with 83 tackles. Another key returner is tight end and linebacker Spencer Kimmell who put up big numbers on both sides of the ball with 412 receiving yards and 110 tackles. Other returners include wide receiver Gavin Doherty, runSee Barber Page 27 ning backs Trae

This experienced team has gain plenty of playing time since they were freshmen and sophomores and head coach Cantrell has every confidence in their abilities this season as long as they maintain their health. “Staying healthy and the leadership from the upperclassmen are the keys to our football team,” said Cantrell. “The juniors and seniors have a lot of experience, having to play a lot of football as sophomores and freshmen. We are expecting to make the playoffs and make a deep run. Coming to practice with an edge and competing on an everyday basis are also keys this season.”

Indians look to their upperclassmen to step into leadership roles By Leslie Nation After having a decent finish to the 2015 season with a record of 4-5, third-year Head Coach of the Medicine Lodge Indians Josh Ybarra is hoping to continue the momentum into the new season. “Going 4-5 last season was a big step for us,” said Ybarra. “We plan on continuing that trend and we want to have an even better season this year. Our schedule changed and we picked up a few teams that we did not play last year, so we hope we come out and compete with them this year.” As a matter of fact, the goal is for the Indians to compete in every game this year to build on what they did last year. Even with that goal in mind, it will be a big battle for the Indians as they lose 10 seniors who offered big leadership to the team last season. This season, Medicine Lodge returns four seniors, so their juniors will have to step up into the leadership roles to help “build a good foundation” on both sides of the ball. Despite that, the Indians are far from lacking in experience. “The starters that are returning gained a ton of experience

last season and should be able to step into larger roles this year,” said Ybarra. “We lost some very key players, especially from the skill positions, and will have to find guys to fill those roles.” Of their key starters See Indians Page 29 from last year, four out of

five of their linemen return, and Coach Ybarra stated that they will have to lean on them a lot this season. The returning starters for the Indians include seniors Luke Fisher, Deagan McGrath and Troy Smith and juniors are Drew Honas, David Jones, Taylor Paxson, Garrett Randels and Blake Winter. The underclassmen will have to depend on these returners to push them during practice as last year’s group of seniors accomplished. “The key to our success will be our veterans accepting their role as leaders and pushing everyone every day in practice,” said Ybarra. “We had a lot of seniors last year and they did a good job of leading in practice. This year we are going to need the juniors and seniors to step up and fill that void. It is also important that our underclassmen follow that lead and step into the spots that we need filled.”
