Big Chic opens by Wal-Mart Many area residents who are familiar with Big Chic Fried Chicken will be thrilled to learn that a location has opened in the Wal-Mart shopping center near GNC and Radio Shack. Local residents Roger and Pam Fuller own the new restaurant, which opened in February. Big Chic specializes in fried chicken, including livers and gizzards, fried catfish, and hot wings. This is the first location in Villa Rica, so residents will not have to drive to Carrollton to enjoy their food. Roger retired from UPS over a year ago, and planned on working part-time. He found the job market very tough, though, and decided he would open the restaurant. He felt like it would be successful, since so many Villa Ricans are familiar with the Big Chic name. Iron Horse Station opens in former Iron Horse BBQ location Villa Rica residents who were saddened when Iron Horse BBQ closed suddenly a few months ago, will be happy to know that Iron Horse Station has opened in the same location near Mirror Lake. The new restaurant is almost an exact duplicate of the former one, with most of the same menu items, cooks, and many of the same staff. Just about the only difference is the change in ownership. Iron Horse Station features a wide range of barbecue, plus steaks, hamburger steak, ribs, 100% ground chuck burgers, chicken tenders, hot dogs, grilled cheese and other items that drew big crowds while it was open before. They also have catfish on Thursday and Saturday, and the famous Choo Choo Brunswick Stew. Side items include fresh salads, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, fried dill pickles, fried okra, and baked potatoes. A kids menu offers those 10 and under a nice meal for $4.99. The restaurant is located at the corner of Bankhead Highway and Tyson Road, just east of Liberty Road/Mirror Lake Boulevard. It is a large restaurant and a meeting room is available in the back. Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab Center, 770-832-8243, MMurphy@GramercyHealth.com I often get inspiration for what to write about each month from events that take place shortly before I realize that I am way past deadline and really, really need to get the article to the editors. This month, I had attended an awards ceremony at my daughter’s high school the night before and heard the quote in the title, “Remain calm and be kind” attributed to General Colin Powell. It stuck with me because it is so appropriate for a slogan or a catch phrase or something along those lines for those of us who work in long term care. Regardless of whether it is a confused resident who demands for the mazillionth (I made that word up) time that you call her family to come pick her up, or it is a family member who is very indignant that we called at 2am to report a minor issue (no, we shouldn’t do that but sometimes it happens – some families insist on it, some get upset), we must remain calm and be kind. When a resident who believes he is ready and perfectly able to go back to his own home but cannot due to lack of resources calls a taxi to come pick him up, we must allow him to go (when we can’t talk him out of it) but remain calm and be kind. When a not-so-confused resident is entertaining himself by arguing with a confused resident, we must remain calm and be kind. In this case, we must be kind to both residents and convince them to do the same. I guess the point is that there is rarely, if ever, a situation in which this piece of advice is not appropriate. There are a lot of different kinds of people who live in a long term care facility. Picture a family that consists of all ages, from newborn to elderly and all have chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease; Some have a chronic condition like Diabetes and an acute condition such as a wound at the same time. Some have psychiatric conditions in addition their various medical conditions. Some are almost ready to move out into their own place and some are at the very end of their life. Some don’t hear well nor see well, which makes communication a challenge. And, as with all families, there are interested parties who want to make sure everyone’s needs are met. While we try very hard to kind of match up residents in different parts of the facility, keep in mind that these are people we are caring for in their home and sometimes the best laid plans go awry. So, the next time you are visiting, if it’s a little noisy and you see a staff member directing “traffic” (the wheelchair kind) with one hand, pushing a wheel chair with the other, all the while answering a question such as “How old do I have to be to get out of here?” from a 90-something year old, with another residents “serenading” everyone, remain calm and be kind. Our staff and our residents will appreciate it.

Benefit for Lifeline Mission to be held A benefit car, truck and motorcycle show and ride for Midway’s Lifeline Mission will be held on Sunday May 15th, with a rain date of May 22nd. The show and ride starts at Lifeline Mission on Highway 61, directly across from Midway Church on Highway 61. The net result of the event will be to help those in need in the Villa Rica and Carrollton area. Show registration is at 12:30pm and is $10 per vehicle, and ride registration is also $10 at the same time. Tours of Lifeline Mission are available from 1pm to 2pm. Judging is at 1:30pm and the awards take place at 2:30pm. The ride starts at 3pm. All proceeds from the ride go directly to Lifeline Mission. The Mission serves the needy in this area through a food pantry, clothes closet, computer lab, life skills instruction, medical and dental assistance, and furniture. Drake Davis Foundation raises money for suicide prevention The fifth Annual Drake Davis Foundation Golf Tournament was held April 15 at The Frog Golf Club in Villa Rica. The mission of the Drake Davis Foundation (a §501(c)(3) organization (20.8198140)) is to raise awareness of suicide and to assist people whose lives are affected by suicide. The Foundation was formed in memory of Drake Davis who committed suicide on January 4, 2006. He was 17 years old. He was a junior and center of his high school football team and to everyone who knew him a very happy, well adjusted, popular and very loved young man. Jerri Mann, Drake’s mother and chairman of the foundation, stated, “When suicide happens, no one wants to talk about it. One of the issues that the Drake Davis Foundation wants to address is speaking up about suicide and reaching out to help prevent it from happening to others. People need to be aware of the impact of suicide on our society. We talk about drinking and using drugs but we don’t talk about suicide. While planning is vital in every area of life, there is one area that often requires special attention: financial stewardship. Money problems often cause friction in relationships. How you deal with money can have an impact on your life in many ways. What are some things that can be done to evaluate your current situation and make corrections where it is necessary? Here are a few questions you can ask to determine your financial health: 1. Am I living on less than I make? Knowing your net monthly income and your necessary spending is the first step to keeping your spending under control. Identifying your necessities and distinguishing them from your wants will help you make sure your priorities are in order. You can make changes along the way as long as you keep your priorities in order. 2. Am I prepared for the unexpected? There are several ways to prepare for the unexpected. You can self insure, share risk, or transfer risk. You can use personal savings (or emergency funds) to prepare for emergencies or even to cover living expenses when you are between jobs. A general rule
of thumb is to have three to six months of living expenses in an account that you could access quickly in the event of an emergency. 3. Will I have enough assets to retire at the age I want? We can not guarantee future performance of our investments; however, we can get a very close estimate based on their past performance. It is a good idea to revisit your retirement plan regularly to ascertain that you are staying on course. 4. I am retired. Do I have enough to last my entire life? In order to answer this question, it is important to take a look at your assets and how they are positioned. Are they at risk of loss? Are they providing a return that is keeping up with inflation? When the answers are “yes”, then you can feel confident about moving on to look at how you can best structure your estate by limiting your tax burden and maximizing the ease of transfer to your heirs. 5. Is giving an important part of my financial plan? As a Christian, giving should be of great importance to you. Those who are followers of Christ should exemplify God’s giving spirit.

Keeping Your Cool
By Kerry Patuka, a degreed and certified educator, licensed minister and founder of Drive 5 Ministries, a consulting, speaking and training ministry for churches and children’s ministry. kerrydrive5@yahoo.com It’s seems to be an annual occurrence…the weather warms up, another school year draws to an end and the days grow longer, but with that often comes kids who are hyper, impatient, unfocused or irritable. So what do as a parent to keep your cool when your kids are losing theirs? Keep the main thing the main thing. This is a great time of year! Spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner. Easter, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day and the Fourth of July are all just waiting to be celebrated. It’s time to plan all of the exciting things your family can do together this summer. Keep your focus on the great opportunities the spring and summer can provide. Plan activities and allow time for creativity. Summer is a great time to try new things and to just relax. What has your family or a particular child wanted to try? Now is the time to plan; but don’t allow the summer to become so over-scheduled that you lose time to be spontaneous. Find a good balance between planned activities and time just to “be”. Poor behavior often stems from boredom. So, as important as it is for our kids to have down time, some kids need more help getting those creative juices flowing, so create a list of acceptable options and ideas. Set the expectations and the consequences. Be clear about how you expect your child to act and what the consequences will be when they do not act accordingly. Together cre-

ate a behavioral contract that lists both the expectations and the consequences and have both your child and yourself sign it. This summer can be a great time to correct behavior that has gotten off-track and adjust it before heading back to school next fall. Be consistent. We can’t expect out children to make consistent good choices when neither the consequences nor our reactions are consistent. We are setting the standard, so, yes - this is just as tough on us as it is on them. Don’t get down to their level. This is another tough one. We must be able to control ourselves. As parents, we are the leaders. Do not argue with them; do not get caught up in back and forth bickering – as if you are two children arguing. Instead, take a breath, stay calm and keep your voice at its regular volume, tempo and pitch. When we raise our voice, it automatically raises our stress and yelling is only effective when used very sparingly. If we yell frequently, our children adjust and accept this as the norm or they raise their volume to match ours. Monitor your own feelings and attitudes. Before losing your cool with your kids, take an assessment of yourself. Often, we have stressors in our lives that we can alleviate, but we don’t realize it. If you are having a bad day, if you do not feel well, if you are worried about something or if you’re feeling resentment towards someone or something…recognize it. Once you do, you can take the proper steps to help yourself and/or address these issues with your family. Depend on God. I believe this is the first step, the last step and is everywhere in-between. Pray for wisdom and guidance. Ask God to show you what the important issues are and how to respond to each appropriately. What if you have already lost your cool? Take a moment, pray, admit to your family that you could have handled the situa-

Patients often complain of cyclic pain with menses, pain during intercourse, painful defecation, irregular bleeding, and infertility. Patients usually notice an onset of pain about two weeks before the onset of menstruation which
usually subsides a day or so after the onset of bleeding. This disorder is diagnosed by direct visualization of the tissue using laparoscopy. Once diagnosed, your doctor can treat the symptoms by prescribing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, oral contraceptive pills, or other hormones which will suppress ovulation and menstruation thereby alleviating cyclic pain. Surgical options can also be discussed with your doctor to see if they are right for you.

What Are You Expecting? My youngest daughter is pregnant with their second child and our sixth grandchild. Our beautiful baby girl will arrive toward the end of August. At least that’s what we are expecting. That’s another word for pregnant - expecting. The doctors tell us we can expect that child around a certain date. Now they tell us we can expect our newest family member to be a girl. It’s all about expecting. In the meantime, my daughter has gone through various stages of expecting — starting with some sickness and discomfort and now some noticeable changes in her body. No matter what the individual days have looked like, there has been no change to what we are all expecting. There were seasons where she had to tough it out and, recently, there have been more good days. Still, what we are expecting was not affected by the circumstances. The Bible teaches us that “faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.” (Hebrews 11:1) Faith is all about expecting. If you don’t like what you are getting, do a check on what you are expecting. Faith feeds on expectations. Sometimes we simply need to raise our expectations. The daily grind of life, the disappointments we all experience, the difficulties every relationship goes through, seek to lower our expectations. If we give in, we quit expecting the best. If we just start settling for whatever comes our way, then faith has no fuel. Have you ever noticed that we usually get what we expect? So why not focus on expecting great things? My daughter will go through lots of different things on the way to delivering this baby, but what she is expecting hasn’t changed. She is expecting to hold a healthy baby girl in the near future. In the same way, we cannot let the things we face--the obstacles that must be overcome--change what we expect. Jesus, the creator of life and the master of the universe, died to give us “rich and satisfying life”. (John 10:10) Are we expecting it? Do we believe that rich and satisfying life is ours no matter what circumstances we face in our daily lives? Do we expect to be winners in Christ? My daughter has not actually seen her baby girl, but that little girl is very real to her. We may not be seeing rich and satisfying life every day, but it must be very real to us. The Glory of God “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.” This is the proclamation in Isaiah 6. It amazes me that we have the privilege of glimpsing God’s glory. His glory is seen throughout the entire earth. From the beauty of a spring day to the blessing of a dear friend, we encounter God’s glory. We experience so many displays of God’s glory in the course of a day, it should drive us to our knees. Our prayer should be the same as Isaiah’s saying, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts!” If you are distracted with the busyness of life, take some time to be still before the Lord. Dive into His word. Open your eyes to the displays of God’s glory around you. We all face challenges in life. During the difficult times ask God to show you a glimpse of His glory. He will. He is faithful and true to His word. So look at the beauty around you and realize that it is a manifestation of God’s glory. Focusing on the glory of God helps to put life’s issues into perspective. Tick Season is Here
By Dixie Popham - Pet Set Grooming, 3313 Hwy. 5, Douglasville, 770.949.0579 Numerous products and medications to prevent ticks on your dog are available both over-the-counter and from your veterinarian. Some veterinarians suggest putting a tick collar on your pet; some will also vaccinate to prevent Lyme disease in dogs. But no method offers 100 percent protection. Check your dog for ticks every day, especially during tick season: spring, summer and fall, or year-round in warmer climates. Brush your fingers through their fur, applying enough pressure to feel any small bumps. If you do feel a bump, pull the fur apart to identify it. An embedded tick will vary in size, from a pinhead to a grape. Ticks are usually black or dark brown. Depending on the size and location of the tick, its legs may also be visible. Ticks need to be embedded for 24 to 48 hours to spread infections. Removing embedded ticks is a delicate operation, because a piece might break off and remain in your dog’s skin if removal is done improperly. Follow these steps to remove a tick or consider bringing your dog to a veterinary clinic where a veterinarian or technician can perform the task safely and show you how it’s done. Make sure the tick is removed promptly, as infection can occur after 24 hours. Grasp the tick very close to the skin with a pair of fine-tipped tweezers. With a steady motion, pull the tick’s body away from the skin. To prevent infection, avoid crushing the tick. After tick removal, clean your dog’s skin with soap and warm water. Drop the tick in isopropyl alcohol to kill it immediately. Never use petroleum jelly, a hot match, nail polish or other products to remove a tick.

my annual color at my home and at all the properties my company maintains. As you read this you may be thinking, “Whoa! She is a little late, I planted my color weeks and weeks ago!” My response, you may have, but it was not without risk. As a professional landscape contractor, we wait to plant seasonal color until the frost free date, which in our area is April 15th. I know that the big box stores and other garden centers tempt consumers with annuals earlier than April 15th (especially this year with our unusually warm temperatures), but that is simply because they can sell it to unsuspecting individuals who are suffering from spring fever. To understand my reasoning behind this planting date, let’s first look at what annual flowers are and then what frost is and how it is detrimental to annual plants. Annuals are exactly as the name sounds: plants that live their entire life cycle in one annual growing period. Although these flowering blossoms will only be around a short time, the blooms of many annuals deliver a vivid punch which can brighten up a garden or outdoor landscape design. They are generally used to enhance or direct attention to an area, or to fill in an area as the other plants are developing, such as in a shrub border or perennial bed. Unlike cool season annuals, such as pansy or snapdragon, our summer annuals are too tender to withstand low night temperatures and frost. Frost develops in much the same way as dew forms. Frost usually forms when a surface cools through loss of infrared radiation to a temperature which is colder than the dew point of the air next to the surface, and the temperature of that surface is below freezing (32 deg F, or 0 deg. C). The source of this moisture is water vapor contained in the air. The heaviest coatings of frost usually do not occur at the coldest temperatures because very cold air cannot hold very much water vapor. Instead, thick deposits of frost usually occur when the air temperature is close to 32 deg. F (0 deg. C). So how does this all affect our tender annuals? Frost causes the water in plant cells to freeze, as water freezes, it expands and thus damages the cell wall. Frost-damaged plants are easy to spot; their growth becomes limp, blackened and distorted. The leaves of tender plants take on a translucent appearance. Frost problems are often made worse where plants face the morning sun, as this causes them to defrost quickly, rupturing their cell walls. Once damaged, it is difficult for a plant to recover, if at all. The simplest thing to do is to prevent the damage all together and not get tempted to plant your annuals early.

Getting Over Your Organizing Hurdles Are you feeling overwhelmed because you have organizing hurdles you can’t seem to “jump over”? Sometimes it just seems easier to give up rather than face the hurdles that want to defeat us, but it doesn’t matter what your particular hurdle is, you can overcome it if you decide to make this a journey, rather than a sprint. No matter how organized you are, I suspect if you are honest with yourself, there is at least one area of your life that could use a little help. After all, none of us are perfect….we are just in “process”. Join me this month as we discuss solutions to common hurdles. Next month we will address more. Remember, a life filled with order begins one step at a time. 1. Not enough time: Many of us think that because we don’t have hours to devote to the task of organizing we don’t have enough time. The fact is, very few of us have large time slots to devote to organizing. When I started the process of creating order in my life, I literally did it 15 minutes at a time. I would set my timer for 15 minutes and work on one drawer, one shelf, or maybe one small section of the closet…that was over 28 years ago and I still enjoy the benefits of habits relearned. 2. Where do I start? Maybe I should have started with this one. It doesn’t matter if you have a little clutter or a lot, not knowing where to start can be intimidating. Stop looking at the whole picture and just choose the room or area that bothers you the most and start there. This makes it easier to digest. I always recommend starting in a corner because that is the quickest way to see progress. 3. Procrastination: Let’s face it; it’s very easy to put off unpleasant or overwhelming tasks! So how do we stop procrastinating? Create a deadline! Look at your calendar and determine a good time to do the dreaded task and make an appointment with yourself! The key to making this work is DO NOT allow yourself the option of postponing the appointment. Treat yourself with the same respect you would give your doctor or your dentist and “Just Do It!” Just writing things down greatly increases the likelihood of seeing them accomplished. 4. Too much stuff: “Ouch”…this one hits a nerve with all of us! We’re so blessed. We never stop and take the time to realize that all this “stuff” requires maintenance. There are only so many hours in a day, so you have to ask yourself; “Do I really want to spend my spare time babysitting all this stuff?” Our culture encourages collections but all of those collections have to have a home, and then they have to be dusted and cared for, so is it really worth it? Statistics show that the average person only wears 20% of their clothing 80% of the time; why not let some of yours go so they can bless others?

More than 365,000 homes in the U.S. are involved in a fire each year. More than 600,000 U.S. homes suffer termite damage totaling over 1.5 billion dollars annually. This is more than the annual damage caused by all fires, storms and earthquakes combined. More than 2 million homes need termite treatment each year. Homeowners insurance may cover losses from fires, floods and earthquakes, but it’s almost impossible to get insurance against termites. Finding out that your home has termites scares most homeowners. Typically you can’t see or hear them, and often only a trained inspector can detect an infestation. Treatment by a homeowner to control termites is virtually impossible. Specialized knowledge and equipment are needed for effective control.
How Termites Live Although there are more than 2,000 species of termites, the Eastern and Western subterranean termites are by far the most common, widest distributed and most damaging in the U.S. The following description refers to these closely related species. Termites eat cellulose, a complex chemical in plant cell walls, and they are very important in the natural decomposition of fallen trees and other plant products. Subterranean termites build their colonies in the soil or tree poles, and rely on the soil for moisture. A subterranean colony may have 60,000 to 1.5 million termites, including several “castes,” each with distinct behaviors. These include reproductives (queen, king and winged swarmers), soldiers and workers. Workers are small (0.1 – 0.25 in. long), creamy white insects. Soldiers are larger (0.2.0.4 in. long) with one soldier for every 20 workers, and have a large dark head, with long, strong, sharp pointed jaws that they use to attack intruders. Property owners seldom see workers or soldiers, but in the spring they may see swarming “winged reproductive,” which can easily be confused with a winged ant unless you look closely.
Preventive Measures You can Take You can do several things as a homeowner to help prevent termite infestations including: • STACK all firewood, lumber or other wooden items several feet away from your building. • KEEP all wood supports of porches, patios, decks or separate buildings more than one foot from contact with your home’s foundations; and use only pressure treated wood for all construction that contacts the ground. • MOVE all wood containing mulch (even cedar or redwood) and decorative wood chips at least one foot from your homes foundation. Sand and stones can be just as attractive an alternative and they discourage pest (including termite harborage next to your building. • REPAIR leaking water lines or fixtures, especially if they wet any part(s) of your house. Repair any eaves, downspouts or roofs that allow your house to get wet even occasionally. • MONITOR moisture levels and take steps to reduce moisture build up in any crawl spaces.

EDUCATION Character Corner Fairness
By Ann Jones Guider, Community Character Coalition The character trait of fairness can be quite complicated for someone to define. Fairness to who is probably the first question that throws a wrench in defining it. We all know we have our own perception of many of the character traits…all measured by a different yard stick or moral value. Most often our background, the parents who raised us, our culture, and our faith influence the way we define good character. Let us look at the word fairness. Synonyms of this word are justice, equality, impartiality, sameness, and equivalence, just to name a few. Fairness, as taught in the weekly character training in our schools, is defined as being “honest and just”. Who doesn’t want to be treated honestly or justly? Too often, however, we end up treating others the way they may have treated us in the past, or giving
them, in our opinion, what they deserve. This is often coupled with a superior attitude of being just a little bit better than them. Most of us are familiar with the Golden Rule that states, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” but how many of us overlook the words “would have them”. This divine guide simply says to treat people like you want them to treat you. When doing so, we view them as our equal and we treat them justly. This was the character word of the month for January and I do not believe that this was by mistake, the month in which we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. He dedicated his life in seeking fairness, justice, and equality for all people. What an impact one man’s life made in our nation’s legacy to future generations! As we were all created by the same Creator, fairness may be somewhat hard to teach in a secular school, but it should be easily taught in our places of worship. It really is a heart condition rather than a condition of the mind.

Recently, around 500 students made the pledge not to text and drive. During the pledge, the students donated money towards the cause. These FCCLA members raised around $50, and they want students to please remember that texting while driving kills.
