WELCOME to the 2014 Chico Wildflower Century! Whether this is your first Wildflower or your 33rd, we have some great treats lined up for you. And whether you’re a bicyclist, a supporter, a local resident or a volunteer, this guide has all the information you need to get the most out of our “Wildflower Weekend.” Still on the fence? Maybe a little bike-curious? Come down to the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds on Saturday. You can still register and try one of our shorter routes on Sunday. Or just come and join us at the Fork in the Road at the Wildflower — no commitment required!

What’s New This Year? Saturday: Rider Check-in Expanded Expo, Fork in the Road Food Truck gathering and live music open to all. Details on page 4.

Sunday: Course changes and improvements • Updated and improved 60-mile Flatflower route avoids

busy Highway 162. • Expanded SAG support on all routes. • Lunch available at Oroville rest stop after 10:30 am. • Signage with bailout options and estimated “time to Every Pedal Counts!

complete” at Oroville, Spring Valley School and Durham School rest stops, so you can plan your route and get back to the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in time for dinner. • Chico Velo’s new Ride Rangers will be out

on the course to assist you. Look for the gold and black Chico Velo jersey with the Ride Ranger emblem.

Zero Waste In partnership with Waste Management, we are again striving to make the Wildflower the first major century bike ride to achieve zero waste. But we need your help. Our “Green Team” volunteers will be standing by to help you sort your trash, recycling and compost at all rest stops and during the post-ride dinner on Sunday. Last year, we diverted 6,370 pounds of trash, recycling and compost, or the equivalent of 80 percent of our waste stream. With your help, this can be the year we achieve our goal of 100 percent waste diversion. Thanks in advance!

Making Bicycling Better in Chico A Message from Chico Velo As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Chico Velo’s mission is bicycling advocacy and education. Your ride fee makes it possible for us to advocate for cyclists in Northern California and beyond! We encourage and educate cyclists at many local community events, and represent your interests locally and at the state legislative level in partnership with the California Bicycle Coalition. We’re also members of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, the League of American Bicyclists, the Alliance for Biking and Walking and the International Mountain Bicycling Association. Join our efforts to make cycling even better in Chico by volunteering or contributing to the Chico Velo Foundation, established to support local bike-related projects and activities.

Current Chico Velo Programs Bike Squad Our “heroes on wheels,” Bike Squad volunteers provide support for programs like Bike Commuter Buddies, Bike Valet, Ride Rangers, KidsPedal! and Light Up Chico. Join the Bike Squad (application online) and help make Chico better for bikes. Light Up Chico We purchase bike lights through local bike shops and distribute to those who cannot afford them through the Chico Police Department, our Bike Squad volunteers on the road, tabling at local events and the Torres Shelter. KidsPedal! With this new program, we are bringing bike safety education back into Chico schools. We provide a “Get Pumped up on Bikes” large assembly, followed by hands-on Bike Rodeos for individual classes, teaching bike handling skills and compliance with basic traffic rules.

The Wildflower by the Numbers Since nearly 150 people completed the first Chico Wildflower Century in 1981, it has become a “bucket list” item for many. Our wonderful scenery, terrific volunteers and delicious food keep many coming back year after year. The following stats come from the 2013 Wildflower:
