Brown leather (not original) upholstery on slip seat. Chair is part of set of twenty-four once owned by Hazard Family. See NHS #77.5 for another. Found at the Wanto-Lyman-Hazard House, circa 1929.

"Cromwellian" style side chair; maple baluster- Unknown turned front legs, rear stiles, and front stretcher; oak side stretchers; traces of original leather and brass tacks; original girt web and sacking, and wrought nails. Used in Moravian Church. Made of maple and red oak. Ref: Robert F. Trent,"The Endicott Chairs" essex Institute Historical Collections, April 1978, pp 103-119. 17th century upholstered chairs were made in Boston and exported to other colonies. Gift of Greene Family of Newport, descendants of John Greene in 18th century. Came to NHS with other items from Moravian Church. See 83.2.1 for reproduction. Internal trade was important in colonies even in first period; households were not self-sufficient.

Bannister-back armchair made of Ash; rush Peckham, Stephen seat, painted black; turned stretchers and stiles; Farnum back has four half spindles. Belonged to Peleg Peckham who gave it to his son, Thomas Peckham Sr., who passed it to his son, Thomas Peckham, Jr. who passed it onto his daughters, Eliza and Sarah Peckham. The Peckham daughters gave it to their nephew, Stephen Farnum Peckham. Chair was probably made in Rhode Island. Family legend has it that Peleg had it made for his wide, Elizabeth, who was a "large woman." In Peleg's will he referred to it as "one great chair." The rush bottom of the chair was put in, in 1922. Had accompanying desk.

Child's high chairmade of ash; turned Wilbour, Theodora stretchers, stiles and arms; back has two slats; front and rear styles end with knob-like turnings; original rush seat. Attributed to Jonathan Easton, Newport. who reportedly made the chair in 1743. Douglas, Helen Clarke, Townsend, John Mahogany and chestnut chest-on-chest with Mrs. ogee pediment. Four drawers in lower chest, three large and two small drawers in upper chest. Fluted bowl finials on fluted plinths, closed pediment, shaped panels below pediment, stop-fluted quarter columns on both chests, ogee bracket feet with continuous bracket running below the lower case molding. Descended in the Audrey Clarke family of Newport. Closely related examples: RISD, 59.251; and coll. Of Robert Goelet (illus: "Ott, J. Brown House Loan Exhib." Catalogue, 1965, p. 83. Large two-door mahogany wardrobe Stanton, Nathaniel G., constructed of framed mahogany panels; four Dr. decorative, turned, cylinder-shaped hinges, each c. 12" long; "french scroll" feet, with molding that extends across skirt, which is ornately scrolled on front and sides of case; case has "cove" cornice and rounded corners with inset panels. Redwood Library "Charter chair": Jacobean-style chair with a plain back panel and decorative 1/2 turned spindels; top rail has carved arches; wide & plain plank seat; seat rail is niched carved; front legs are balustered turned; back is straight; disk feet; 4 stretchers carved like seat rail; fragments of paper label, mostly illegible, is affixed to seat. Chair is made of English oak and the seat is Norwegian pine. 2 labels, brass and paper, affixed to underside of seat that has the history of the chair. See accession file for entire history. Chair of state for Gov. Benedict Arnold, who received the charter for the colony of RI; chair of state for Gov. Samuel Ward King, when charter was superseded by the constitution. Known as the "charter chair".

Wing Chair THE MINIATURE WING CHAIR HAS A BLUE, BEIGE AND YELLOW PRINT COVERING WITH A DESIGN OF COTTON PAISLEY Walnut Queen Anne dining table with two drop leaves and two swing legs; turned tapered legs ending in platform pad feet. Leaves corners are rounded off (this was probably done at a later date). Chalk inscription on bottom of table top 'George Gibbs' (d. 1755). Sold at auction in 1988 at Gibbs Estate sale. Probably owned by Gibbs family until then. Attributed to Townsend Family Shops.

Two piece secretary, top (b), bottom (a). Bottom Haire, Grace M. of desk contains three drawers, bottom two drawers have two knobs each. Drawer above these two drawers does not have knobs. Dropfront desk above the three drawers. Front feet are scrolled, back feet are rectangular. Thick wide scrolls flank the two bottom drawers. B is a cabinet that rests on top of A. Front of cabinet are two hinged glass panels that open toward you. The panels are divided into eight panes (four on each panel). The cabinet contains two shelves. Below the glass panels are two drawers side by side with two knobs each. The top of b is a sloping, flat-top pediment that is wider and longer than the rest of the piece. All drawers, except for the one without knobs, and the cabinet have key holes. (key is kept in the accession file).

Mahogany dining table in three parts. A is the Ebbs, Nancy rectangular shaped center part with two dropleafs on the long sides. B and C are semicircular ends that attach to piece a on the long ends. All three pieces have four legs with vertical carved lines. The table has been extensively worked over, probably around the turn of the 20th century, to the extent where part of the top of each of the three pieces has been replaced with newer pieces of mahogany. Donor is a direct descendant of Charles and Mary Northam Cotton of Newport. The table is believed to have been in the Cotton House in the 19th century and descended through their grandson Robert Cotton Ebbs, who was the grandfather of the donor.

Weaver, Holmes Mahogany card table with label on skirt. Edge of King, Peter and King, top has a border of cross-banded veneer. The Lynd various sections of the skirt have sections of light wood. Central panel and bottom of skirt have inlays patterned with both light and dark woods. Holmes weaver label appears on wall side of skirt. Table descended in Weaver family until purchased by Mrs. David Caesar. Current owner is Peter King. Gitlwood Victorian wall mirror designed to stand Preservation Society, on the floor. On either side of mirror are turned Newport and carved pilasters with many sections; pilasters are detailed with garlands on the lower half and a chex-and-dot pattern on the top, at the center of the bottom border is a carved section with flowers, leaves and ribbons, the top pediment is shaped and carved with a chex-anddot design; at the center of the top section are two box frames. Small wood bench at bottom of mirror is designed to resemble marble.

Round Quaker footstool used by children during Foster, John Quaker meetings. Wooden base, carpet covering, sawdust filling. Carpet covering is light and dark brown, red, pink and white. Fabric on top of stool appears to be newer (presumably from shoe wear). Top fabric is light and dark brown. Two ears are added probably for ease in picking up the stool.
