welcome to

Chichester Cinema

Room

This is always a very exciting time of year in Cinema Land. Three of the main Movie Awards Ceremonies follow one another to reveal the best films and performances of the year. The Golden Globes have already been announced (10 Jan), with ‘The Revenant’ (screening here from 5th Feb) winning three of the major awards – Best Actor; Director; and Film (Drama). The BAFTAs will follow on the 14th February and finally the Academy Awards on the 28th February, both featuring a host of nominees that will be screening this season (Spotlight; The Hateful Eight; Trumbo; The Lady in the Van; Room; Bridge of Spies; Carol; The Assassin; Brooklyn; The Big Short… to name but a few). Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated on the 27th January, and we will be screening a one-off performance of ‘Nicky’s Family’ on Saturday 30th January – a documentary celebrating the life of Sir Nicholas Winton, an Englishman who organized the rescue of 669 East European children just before the outbreak of World War II. We hope to welcome Lady Milena Grenfell Baines to introduce the documentary, who is one of the ‘Winton Children’ who owe their lives to this remarkable rescue. Chichester Cathedral will mark the day through a performance at the Cathedral of the staged oratorio ‘Last Train to Tomorrow’ (a tribute to the late Sir Nicholas Winton), which will be conducted on the evening by the Composer Carl Davis himself. Those of you who were looking out for our Annual Film Quiz, ‘A Mind for Movies’ that normally takes place in late March, will be disappointed to find out that we will not be holding this event this year, due to the refurbishment of our host venue – The Minerva Brasserie. We will however, return stronger than ever in 2017. See you at the Cinema

After five-year-old Jack and his mother escape from the enclosed surroundings that Jack has known his entire life, the boy makes a thrilling discovery: the outside world. The incredibly talented (and many critics 2016 Best Actress Oscar favourite) Brie Larson plays Ma, who has created a whole universe in ‘Room’ for 5 year-old Jack (Jacob Tremblay), where they have both lived for Jack’s whole life. She was just 17 when the man they call “Old Nick” (Sean Bridgers) lured her in to his world, but seven years later, Ma risks everything to give Jack the chance to make a thrilling discovery. This is an unparalleled celebration of the bond between parent and child, and will be remembered long after you leave your cinema seat. Ireland/Canada 2015 Lenny Abrahamson 118m

The Last Diamond Director Eric Barbier re-teams with his ‘Le Serpent’ star, celebrated actor and director, Yvan Attal, in this tightly-knit heist flick. We’re introduced to our fresh out of jail anti-hero, Simon (Attal), as he takes on the biggest job of his career – stealing the historical and ‘cursed’ 137 carat Florentine diamond. To get on the ‘inside’ Simon takes on the role of a private security adviser for diamond expert Julia (Bérénice Bejo from ‘The Artist’). The heist itself is meticulously depicted with the same suspense and high drama of the iconic burglary sequence in Jules Dassin’s Rififi. The unpredictable twists and turns, make for a truly enjoyable experience – especially for those who love a good old fashioned thrill. Special Event

Nicky’s Family Nicholas Winton, an Englishman, organized the rescue of 669 Czech and Slovak children just before the outbreak of World War II. This documentary is supplementing the Holocaust Memorial event at Chichester Cathedral on 27th January. Winton, did not speak about these events with anyone for more than half a century. His exploits would have probably been forgotten if his wife, fifty years later, hadn’t found a suitcase in the attic, full of documents and transport plans. Interspersed between archival footage and a dramatisation of the Kindertransport, is footage of interactions between rescued ‘children’ transmitting their stories. (Some subtitles) Czech Rep 2011 Matej Miná 96m We hope to welcome Lady Milena Grenfell Baines to introduce the documentary (plus short film about her own story), who is one of the ‘Winton Children’ who owe their lives to this remarkable rescue. Chichester Cathedral, in co-operation with the University of Chichester, will mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2016 (27 Jan) through a performance of the staged oratorio ‘Last Train to Tomorrow’ (composed by Carl Davis, written by Hiawyn Oram) directed by Professor Pamela Howard. To be conducted on the evening by Carl Davis himself, ‘Last Train to Tomorrow’, is a tribute to the late Sir Nicholas Winton. Back by Popular Demand

A darkly funny yet deeply moving featuring Peter Mullan as Hector the homeless Glaswegian. Hector McAdam is embarking on his annual journey from Scotland to a warm refuge in London, where comrades, Christmas cheer and a turkey dinner await him. But, aware this might be his last epic journey, Hector opts for some paths not taken in years to reconnect with his past and reunite with those he left behind. Life without a home isn’t easy but Hector is resilient, accepting of people, and life, as they come. He meets with friendship and kindness, disappointment and cruelty, discomfort and joy. His cross country odyssey brings chance encounters; companions old and new who need his support as much as he needs theirs, and stirs up memories, resentments, regrets and fresh hope for the future. Rhapsody / The Two Pigeons A double bill of two one-act Fredrick Ashton ballets. Encore transmission by satellite from Royal Opera House. This delightful Frederick Ashton double bill opens with his setting of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, using the music’s dark turbulence and brilliance to inspire some of his most thrilling choreography. Witty, impassioned and sublime this ballet was the pinnacle of Ashton’s romantic style. The second half of the programme features Ashton’s delicate, deceptively comic ‘The Two Pigeons’ (André Messager arranged by John Lanchbery) – a work rarely performed and a real treat for ballet fans everywhere. The dancers include Natalia Osipova, Steven McRae, Lauren Cuthbertson, Vadim Muntagirov, Laura Morera and Ryoichi Hirano. 165m including interval

A behind-the-scenes look at Moscow’s prestigious Bolshoi as it’s rocked by a scandal in 2013. This documentary recounts the acid attack on Artistic Director Sergei Filin, his recovery, return, and the arrest of Bolshoi dancer Pavel Dmitrichenko. But more broadly, the film uses the scandal to dig into the Bolshoi’s culture and casts it as a symbol for Russian society. As a bonus to the viewer, there are gorgeously shot performances from ‘Swan Lake’, ‘Spartacus’ and others. (Some Subtitles) UK 2015 Nick Read, Mark Franchetti 86m

Encore by satellite from the Royal Opera House. ‘La Traviata’ is regarded as one of Verdi’s finest operas, and Richard Eyre’s traditional staging is one of The Royal Opera’s most popular productions. The opera tells the story of the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry, one of opera’s greatest heroines, based on the real life courtesan Marie Duplessis, who died in 1847 aged just 23. In this revival, Violetta is sung by Russian soprano Venera Gimadieva in her debut with The Royal Opera, following her successful appearance as Violetta at the Glyndebourne Festival. A delicately crafted and moving family drama which features the final performance from Richard Johnson, who died in June 2015. Daniel Cerqueira plays Daniel, a teacher living in London who heads back to the Lake District to visit his elderly parents at their remote, rubbish-filled, ramshackle cottage. Leonard (Johnson) is bed-bound, but is still a domineering bully with a magnificently haughty manner, especially when browbeating the son who so clearly disappoints him. Johnson plays him with a swagger that belies his frailty. Gemma Jones is the long-suffering wife Mariah. The film captures beautifully the oscillating emotions of the three main characters – their exasperation and rage, but also the deep-rooted affection they have for one another. One of the best British films of the year. UK 2014 Tom Browne 93m

Il Trovatore Premièred in 1853 at the Teatro Apollo in Rome, where ‘It Trovatore’ “began a victorious march throughout the operatic world”. In the aftermath of ‘Rigoletto’, Verdi’s sole desire was to do something new. However, he became impatient when the project to adapt ‘El Trovador’, by Antonio García Gutiérrez, aroused only guarded enthusiasm from his librettist. Rather than true characters, the music portrays abstract figures consumed by passion. The extraordinary cast features Anna Netrebko who carries this enraptured music to new heights. Partisan Alexander, a boy who has been raised in a commune, finds that his unwillingness to fall in line puts him on a collision course with the society’s charismatic and domineering leader. Coming of age sparks a perilous arrival of conscience in promising Aussie director Ariel Kleiman’s dystopian fable of child assassins. Heavy on inference, with an assertive score, ‘Partisan’ has a twisted fairy tale vibe similar to ‘Dogtooth’ (Yorgos Lanthimos) and ‘The City of Lost Children’ (Jean-Pierre Jeunet). Vincent Cassel brims with primal physicality and threatening charm as the messianic leader of a mysterious cult of pint-sized killers and compliant single moms. But newcomer Jeremy Chabriel commands as 11-year-old Alexander, a chosen son whose dawning sense of right and wrong challenges the social order. An auspicious beginning, for him and Kleiman. When Harry Met Sally This genre-defining romantic comedy chronicles the eleven-year relationship between Harry and Sally who meet in college, pursue their own lives, then reconnect ten years later. Angsty wise-guy Harry (Billy Crystal) and neurotic kook Sally (Meg Ryan) embark on a friendship that endures over the years and remains defiantly platonic until, one fateful New Year’s Eve, it doesn’t, and everything is forever changed. Nora Ephron’s screenplay is so perfectly pitched, so astute on the nature of both friendship (between both sexes) and love that it remains as relevant and rewarding as the day it was written. While it may be packed with whip-smart, endlessly quotable dialogue and laughout-loud moments, its enduring popularity undoubtedly stems from the fact that it has genuine heart USA 1989 Rob Reiner 96m

Kaufmann makes his highly anticipated solo cinematic debut with this concert film and documentary. Shot on location in Italy, the film features his critically acclaimed Puccini concert from La Scala, and includes all of Puccini’s most loved tenor arias including ‘Nessun dorma’. The cameras also go behind the scenes and follow Jonas around Milan as he talks about what it takes to be the world’s greatest tenor and why Puccini’s music is so special to him. “No aria is as loved today as ‘Nessun dorma’. The legendary Three Tenors took place only a few days before my twenty-first birthday, and for a long time I didn’t dare sing it myself, since I was so in awe of the aria’s magic and its incredible appeal. Even today, whenever I hear and sing this aria, I still get goose bumps.” 130m

Youth A retired orchestra conductor is on holiday in the Alps with his daughter and his best friend when he receives an invitation from Queen Elizabeth II to perform for Prince Philip’s birthday. Two long-time friends – acclaimed composer and conductor Fred (Michael Caine) and renowned filmmaker Mick (Harvey Keitel) vacation in the Swiss Alps, with Fred’s daughter Lena (Rachel Weisz). While Mick scrambles to finish the screenplay for what he imagines will be his last important film, Fred has no intention of resuming his musical career… even though he has just been asked to conduct a piece for the Queen and Prince Philip. The two men reflect on their past, each finding that some of the most important experiences can come later in life. Gorgeously filmed and beautifully acted, ‘Youth’ offers an enticing opportunity to witness an impressive array of seasoned veterans combining their cinematic might. Sorrentino includes moments of Fellini-esque extravagance (look out for Miss Universe descending into the hotel pool), and provides a glorious finale, both musically and in the way the drama is resolved. We return to a galaxy far, far away, where the action takes place some years after the events of ‘Return of the Jedi’. Scavenger Rey (Daisy Ridley) teams up with renegade “First Order” Stormtrooper Finn (the terrific John Boyega) and globular droid BB‑8, on a quest that sees them encounter some well-known faces. As always with director J.J Abrams, the film feels very physical, scenes of dog-fighting TIE fighters and a relaunched Millennium Falcon crashing through trees possessing the kind of power sorely lacking from George Lucas’s prequels. The battle scenes are breathtakingly immersive, but also impressively joyous. Elsewhere, the sand dune landscapes have a touch of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ majesty, vindicating Abrams’ long-standing dedication to shooting on film rather than digital, cinematographer Dan Mindel augmenting the 35mm stock with some lush 65mm Imax footage. The Good Dinosaur Pixar presents an odd-couple journey that will leave both kids and adults alike in ‘raptors’. Separated from his family, a young dinosaur must rise to a series of challenges before he can claim his place in the natural order. ‘The Good Dinosaur’ imagines a world in which the giant prehistoric creatures have survived – instead of colliding with our planet, the asteroid that could have caused their extinction narrowly passes on by through the universe. Over time, the monstrous vertebrates have evolved from their original hunter-gatherer model to a more peaceful agricultural society in which they farm vegetables or cattle, depending on their carnivorous or herbivorous proclivities. A visual delight, a simple story with a reminiscent of classic Disney and one that carries the traditional emotional “Pixar seal of approval”. USA 2015 Peter Sohn 100m

An intimate documentary which looks at the lives of modern circus performers, in and out of the extraordinary ‘Cirque Du Soleil’. In collaboration with ‘Cirque Du Soleil’, this is an exciting look at the evolution of acrobatics, an art form presented with admiration and appreciation – a closer look at the challenge of defying gravity. There’s a striking sequence at the end of this handsome documentary about the new breed of circus acrobats. It’s a montage of exquisitely lit impossible feats of strength and balance, set to the second movement of Beethoven’s 7th. Dangling from ropes; spinning in giant hoops; catapulted skyward, these are performers with a staggering physical eloquence. The cinematography is arresting and the acrobats are a ridiculously photogenic bunch. (Some subtitles) Spain/Mexico/Portugal 2015 Horacio Alcalá 87m

Favourite for the 2016 Best Film Oscar, you couldn’t ask for a better ensemble cast to be in this important, well-researched, well-written and well-made film. This tense investigative dramatic-thriller traces the steps to one of the biggest cover-ups in modern times. It tells the riveting true story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe investigation that would rock the city and cause a crisis in one of the world’s oldest and most trusted institutions. When the newspaper’s tenacious “Spotlight” team of reporters delves into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church, their year-long investigation uncovers a decades-long coverup at the highest levels of Boston’s religious, legal, and government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world. The re-creation of the local atmosphere adds credibility to the star power, and at its most stripped down and plain-spoken, ‘Spotlight’ allows the record to speak for itself. Bande à Parte Band of Outsiders To follow last season’s ‘Le Mépris’, we bring you the film that most clearly illustrates the debt modern cinema owes to Jean-Luc Goddard. Anna Karina, Claude Brasseur and Sami Frey are Odile, Arthur and Franz: a beautiful girl and two would-be criminals she meets at an English class. It’s a scoot round 1960s Paris, with the three of them improvising a dance number in a bar and breaking the record for running round the Louvre. Godard’s main preoccupation is the untapped potential of cinema. All the stylistic gimmickry that characterised the Nouvelle Vague is present and correct. But rather than just extolling the virtues of film, he actively denounces its artistic cousins, which, while visually striking, lack cinema’s energy and freedom. It’s all about action and its presentation in a vibrant and original way. (Subtitles) France 1964 Jean-Luc Godard 97m

An ethically stirring bio-picture about the courageous screenplay writer who triumphed over the Red Scare crusaders of the 1950s. In 1947, Dalton Trumbo was Hollywood’s top screenwriter until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs. The film recounts how Dalton used words and wit to win two Academy Awards and expose the absurdity and injustice under the blacklist, which entangled everyone from gossip columnist Hedda Hopper to John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger. Bryan Cranson delivers an Academy-Award-calibre performance of Trumbo, showcasing his character qualities as an idealist, a freedom of speech advocate, a loyal friend, a devoted family man, a focused screenplay writer, and a thick-skinned survivor. Four outsiders in the world of high-finance who predicted the credit and housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000s decide to take on the big banks. The film follows three groups of people (including Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt) who foresaw the crisis to come and bet huge amounts of money against the banks, thus somewhat guiltily making fortunes for themselves as much of America found itself broke. McKay livens things up with sudden fiscal explanations from unlikely sources – Margot Robbie in a bubble bath, Selena Gomez at a blackjack table. In the hands of most other directors, this film may have been boring, but McKay (‘Anchorman’) brings a unique energy to the film, he manages to make it as entertaining as it is enlightening. But its ominous revelations linger long after it’s over. USA 2015 Adam McKay 130m

Rams Hrútar In a remote Icelandic farming valley, two brothers who haven’t spoken in 40 years have to come together in order to save what’s dearest to them – their sheep. The brothers may not have family, but boy, do they love their rams, expertly bred and groomed critters in which their owners take infinite pride. Gummi (Sigurður Sigurjónsson) and Kiddi (Theodór Júlíusson) are finally forced to speak to each other when a disease threatens their treasured rams. Director Hákonarson’s film is observed with the skill of a seasoned documentarist, and the two leads, along with the beautifully barren Icelandic countryside, lift the film to the next level. Uniquely humorous, and emotionally complex. (Subtitles) Iceland 2015 Grímur Hákonarson 93m BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

But as Candy zeroes in on every vulnerability both on and off the campaign trail Jane is plunged into a personal crisis as intense as the one her team exploits nationally to boost their numbers. In this new film by the Coen Brothers, a Hollywood fixer in the 1950s works to keep the studio’s stars in line. Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) is Capital Pictures’ head of physical production and, most importantly, the studio fixer. His job is to maintain the clean reputation of the company and its stars, keeping them free from controversy. Mannix is advised that studio star Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) has disappeared after not showing up for work on the current production of “Hail Caesar, a Tale of Christ’s Life.” He initially believes Whitlock has been drinking, but receives a call from a group of communists who claim to have kidnapped him and want a ransom. As Mannix gathers the cash, he simultaneously has to deal with an unhappy director (Ralph Fiennes), an innocent young starlet DeeAnna Moran (Scarlett Johansson) who is pregnant and unmarried, and a host of others including Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Christopher Lambert and Jonah Hill. The true story of two news anchors who discover that the sitting US president may have been AWOL for over a year during the Vietnam War. When the story blew up in Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett) and Dan Rather’s (Robert Redford) faces, the ensuing scandal ruined Rather’s career, nearly changed a US Presidential election, and almost took down all of CBS News in the process. Blanchett shines (again) with a performance that rivals her recent highlights (‘Blue Jasmine’ and ‘Carol’); and Redford adds that touch of old-world professionalism that is just what is needed for the Dan Rather role. An arresting, intelligent and thought provoking film that explores the changing face of journalism in a world of big business and political clout. USA 2015 James Vanderbilt 125m

Quentin Tarantino’s eight feature film offers rapturous dialogue, immense performances, Wild West violence, and a whole lot of fun. Some years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the snowy Wyoming landscape towards Red Rock with bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) on board. Along the road, they encounter former Union soldier Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. They arrive at a stagecoach stopover and are greeted by four unfamiliar faces: caretaker Bob (Demian Bichir), Red Rock hangman Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), cowboy Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travellers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all. Tarantino has effectively used an original Ennio Moricone score to add to the grandeur of this, his second Western (after Django Unchained), and to proudly sit aside his incomparable, inventive dialogue. Fifty years on, ‘Hitchcock/Truffaut’ is still one of the most important books any cinephile should own. Now, it is one brilliant documentary! In 1962, Alfred Hitchcock and a 30-year-old François Truffaut sequestered themselves in a windowless Hollywood office for a week‑long conversation. The result: the seminal book “Hitchcock/Truffaut,” published a half century ago, dissecting every film Hitchcock had made until then, illuminating his masterful techniques, making the case for the popular director as an artist, and influencing generations of filmmakers. Kent Jones brings “the Bible of Cinema” to invigorating life. He interviews countless filmmakers whose work has been profoundly influenced by Hitchcock – Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Peter Bogdanovich, Richard Linklater, Olivier Assayas, and many others. Narrated by French Director/Actor Mattieu Almaric. USA 2015 Kent Jones 79m

Vertigo Hitchcock’s beautifully stylized psychological thriller about a man in love with a romantic fantasy invented by another man. This audaciously intricate melodrama concerns an acrophobic detective (James Stewart) who spurns the attentions of a fashion illustrator (Barbara Bel Geddes) to pursue his frustrated passion for a chilly, suicidal platinum-blond woman of mystery (Kim Novak). Novak’s famous transformations, Stewart’s haunted fabrications, and Bel Geddes’s unrequited longing are all tethered to the whim of another master plotter, the detective’s long-lost friend (Tom Helmore), whose marital suspicions are the MacGuffin with which Hitchcock unfurls his own obsessions: the tragic difference between friendship and love, the seductive power of style and disguise, the proximity of lust and madness, and the inseparability of sex from suspense, danger, and death. Hitchcock’s most tender story may also be his ‘masterpiece’. UK 1958 Alfred Hitchcock 128m

Jules et Jim Truffaut’s masterpiece is perhaps the most influential, and arguably the best of those first astonishing French ‘New Wave’ films. In Paris, before WWI, two friends, Austrian Jules (Oskar Werner) and Frenchman Jim (Henri Serre) fall in love with the same woman, Catherine (Jeanne Moreau) – but Catherine loves and marries Jules. After the war, when they meet again in Germany, Catherine starts to love Jim... This is the story of three people in love, a love that does not affect their friendship, and about how their relationship evolves with the years. The style of the film came as a revelation in 1962. Truffaut skips lightly through the material, covering 25 years while never seeming to linger. The camera is nimble, its movement so fluid that we sense a challenge to the traditional Hollywood grammar of establishing shot, close-up, reaction shot and so on. An unmissable classic. Wild Tales Relatos Salvajes We present another opportunity to see one of the best foreign films of 2015, and now 2016 BAFTA nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. Multi-story feature films are not the happiest of genres (unevenness; multiple starts and ends; various directors with contrasting visions), but this collection goes a long way to proving the cliché wrong. The result feels as amazingly cohesive as it is relentlessly clever and entertaining. Each of the six stories here is thoroughly enthralling, and all are united by a mordant black humour as well as a singular film maker – the very clever Damián Szifrón. Connected thematically in dealing with revenge and retribution, each segment sets up expectations that its successor ingeniously fulfils or surpasses. You’ll laugh till it hurts – in ‘Wild Tales’, that’s the point. Argentina 2015 Damián Szifrón 122m

Boris Godunov Richard Jones and Antonio Pappano renew their creative collaboration with this new production of Mussorgsky’s historical masterpiece, here seen in its compact 1869 first version in seven scenes. The originality of the composer’s vision of Pushkin’s play about Tsar Boris Godunov was too much for the management of the Imperial Theatres, who demanded changes before its première in 1874. Many prefer the integrity of the original, which makes few concessions to operatic conventions. Keenly awaited will be Bryn Terfel’s assumption of the difficult title role, while John Graham-Hall appears as the crafty Prince Shuisky and John Tomlinson as the vagabond monk Varlaam. The Car Man (Carmen) ‘The Car-Man’ is loosely based on Bizet’s popular opera (‘Carmen’) and has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in New Adventures’ repertory, brilliantly arranged by Terry Davies. Sensational new dance cinema event from celebrated choreographer Matthew Bourne. The familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960’s America where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. Lez Brotherston’s epic design, Chris Davey’s evocative lighting and Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling take in a wealth of cinematic references, creating a dangerous and uncompromising vision of small-town America. The single stage set adapts into eight different permutations, taking us from diner through nightclub and prison and then out on the road in a cinematic finale where the Chevrolet cars of the period are destroyed in a pile up. The period look is further enhanced with the girls in tight-waisted colourful frocks and the men in Brando-esque T-shirts and jeans. The dance ensembles are an extraordinarily versatile group: classical, jazz, modern and flamenco seem natural expressions of their body movements. Marcelo Gomes will guest star as ‘Luca’, the title role and Will Kemp deserves a special mention for his sensitive portrayal of Angelo. The Car Man was first seen in 2000, winning the Evening Standard Award for “Musical Event of the Year”. A revival in 2007 proved a smash-hit in London and at venues across the UK. This event was recorded live at Sadler’s Welles, August 2015. 98m (no interval) International Panorama: Australia

Openings and Closings:

How films invite us in (and out) Opening sequences introduce viewers to the visual and emotional landscape of the cinematic world to come. Sometimes openings immerse us directly into a landscape, or into a mood, sometimes into a mystery, often into a character worthy of our time and attention. If film openings are designed to capture the viewer, then film closings usually provide release, an opportunity to make sense of what has gone before. In this friendly workshop (led by film tutor Richard Cupidi), we discuss how both film openings and closings work cinematically. By way of example, we’ll watch in detail five remarkable openings – intense, visually striking and atmospheric. We’ll match these with five outstanding closings, ones that complete the narrative, or remain elliptical, or just leave us asking for more.
