On behalf of the people of New Orleans, welcome to Christmas New Orleans Style, a whole merry month of holiday feasting, soulstirring Christmas music, unique gift shopping and heartwarming traditions. The fun begins on December 1 with the lighting of the Christmas tree and a free holiday concert in St. Louis Cathedral, and it doesn’t end until January 4 after the world-famous Sugar Bowl. I’d like to personally thank French Quarter Festivals, Inc. and New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation for coordinating this magical event. Get ready to eat like you’ve never eaten before! There’s nothing like a New Orleans Reveillon, an old French holiday dining tradition available in famous restaurants all over the city with affordable prix fixe menus. This year, Brigtsen’s and the American Sector are offering Reveillon feasts as well. Come enjoy the cuisine of James Beard award-winning chefs Frank Brigtsen and John Besh. Love historic home tours? They’re even more spectacular during the holidays. Up for a cooking demonstration? Let one of our famous chefs show you how to jazz up your holiday table. And Christmas shopping on Royal Street, Magazine Street and in the Arts District is a lot more satisfying than shopping online. You’ll love stuffing your little ones’ stockings this year. Christmas New Orleans Style is one of our premier family events, with activities like Celebration in the Oaks in City Park, candlelight caroling in Jackson Square, The Nutcracker at the Mahalia Jackson Theater and playing in the snow at Miracle on Fulton Street. We’re also excited to announce several new family events this year. Spread out a blanket, sip hot cocoa and enjoy a free outdoor showing of the classic Polar Express at our first ever Holiday Movie on the Mississippi. After the Krewe of Jingle Holiday Parade, be a part of the first ever Jingle Mingle block party at The Roosevelt Hotel—a winter wonderland with food, music, games and crafts. And Rudolph, Santa and friends will jingle their bells at the starting line of the 1st annual Reindeer Run and Romp. Put bells on your shoes and antlers on your head and join this holiday fun run for kids on Canal Street. But the kids aren’t the only ones who get to play at Christmas New Orleans Style. On any eve you wish, you can follow the stars to Bourbon, Frenchmen and Fulton streets for authentic New Orleans music. New Orleans is also home to A NOLA New Year’s Eve, named “One of the World’s Best New Year’s Eve Parties” by Budget Travel and CNN.com. Have yourself a jazzy little Christmas in New Orleans!

Revel in nostalgia and taste the tradition! 30

10/28/10 11:56 AM

2010 EDITION

Reveillon Menus at New Orleans Finest Restaurants During the mid-1800s, New Orleans’ Creole families celebrated the “Reveillon” (French for “awakening”) twice during the holidays. The first Reveillon came after Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, when families returned from St. Louis Cathedral to break a daylong fast with an elaborate meal. The meal consisted of egg dishes, sweetbreads, and Creole specialties, such as daube glacé. It often ended with a cake filled with fruit confection, dripping with wine or rum, and topped with whipped cream. New Year’s Eve brought another Reveillon, usually shared among several families. This more festive meal featured eggnog, fancy pastries, meringues, sugar sculptures, and crystallized fruits. By late afternoon, families would return home to a light supper followed by a night of singing and dancing—with wine and whiskey for the gentlemen, and cordials and liqueurs for the ladies. Today’s Reveillon is celebrated nightly during the Christmas season in restaurants throughout the city. Menus combine ageless Creole cuisine with more contemporary New Orleans dishes, but the spirit of the past remains. In fact, some of our Reveillon restaurants—Commander’s Palace, Galatoire’s and Tujague’s—are more than 100 years old! Revel in nostalgia and join us for the Reveillon—the authentic taste of Christmas New Orleans Style! Prices do not include tax, gratuity, and may not be combined with other promotional offers or discounts. Available holiday dates are noted in each listing, but please call in advance to confirm or check the restaurant’s website: (CE) Open Christmas Eve; (CD) Open Christmas Day; (NYE) Open New Year’s Eve; (NYD) Open New Year’s Day; (CER) Open Christmas Eve with Reveillon Dinner; (CDR) Open Christmas Day with Reveillon Dinner; (NYER) Open New Year’s Eve with Reveillon Dinner; (NYDR) Open New Year’s Day with Reveillon Dinner. 5 Fifty 5 555 Canal Street 504-553-5638 555canal.com CER — Menu $40
