SETTING THE SCENE: Friday night marks the opener of the final series of the regular season between the Jackals and expansion Rockland Boulders. The homeaway-home series shifts to Rockland’s Provident Bank Park on Saturday night before returning to Yogi Berra Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Jackals have won four of their last five games while the Boulders have emerged victorious in six of their last eight. JACKALS AT A GLANCE: With 16 games remaining in the regular season, the Jackals enter Friday’s contest in third place in the second half standings, 1.5 games behind the first-place Brockton Rox and a game behind second-place Worcester. If the season ended today, the Jackals would qualify as the third seed in the four-team Can-Am League playoffs. The Jackals have already eclipsed last season’s win total (42) and with a win tonight would move 14 games over .500 for the first time this season. LAST NIGHT’S CONTEST: The Jackals emerged victorious in their final meeting of the season against the traveling New York Federals, 7-2, in the rubber game of the series on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. Starter Jon Kibler (1-5) picked up his first win of the season, going six srong innings and striking out a season-high eight batters. After Kibler departed, the bullpen finished the job with Cody Railsback, Kyle Gunderson, and Josh Ellis combining to retire all nine batters they faced on just 25 total pitches. Nick Giarraputo paced the Jackals’ offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and his team-leading 25th double of the season, which marked a new career high. The Jackals finish the regular season with a 10-4 record against New York. THE MEN ON THE MOUND: Southpaw A.J. Wideman takes the mound for New Jersey looking for his fifth consecutive win. Over his last four starts, the 26-yearold Ontario native has held his opponent scoreless three times, posting a 1.44 ERA during that stretch. In his lone start against Rockland on June 4, Wideman allowed 14 hits (the most allowed by a Can-Am League starter in a game this season) over four innings before being sidelined due to a groin injury. That outing against Rockland marked the only time Wideman has allowed more than four earned runs in a start this season. Rockland counters with 27-year-old righthander John Muller, who makes his first start in nine days. In three games against New Jersey this season, the Mount Kisco, N.Y. resident has allowed 10 earned runs over 12.2 innings of work.

RELIEF REINFORCEMENT: On Thursday, the Jackals signed right-handed relievers Josh Ellis and Kyle Gunderson to help bolster one of the league’s top bullpens. Ellis, a 27-year-old former 11th round pick of the Diamondbacks, boasts four seasons of Triple-A experience and a career ERA of 4.06 over his first five seasons. Gunderson, 26, has pitched briefly at Triple-A in the Marlins’ system and carries a 2.53 career ERA into the 2011 season. To make room on the roster for Ellis and Gunderson, the Jackals traded rookie reliever Mike Petrowski back to the New York Federals, where he began the season. THE CATALYST: In 22 games since signing with the Jackals on July 25, center fielder Sean Smith is batting .325 with 18 runs scored and is a perfect 18-for-18 in stolen base attempts. The former Rockland Boulder is hitting .400 (14-for-35) when leading off innings. JACKAL BITES: After allowing seven runs over his first two outings with New Jersey, Cody Railsback has turned in four straight scoreless appearances and has held opponents hitless over his last 5.1 innings... Nick Santomauro has reached base in six of his last seven plate appearances... D’Angelo Jimenez has knocked in 13 runs over his first 13 games with the Jackals... With three walks last night, Myron Leslie extended his league lead to 54 (three more than Worcester’s Abraham Nunez).

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST KIBLER, DOMINANT BULLPEN LEAD JACKALS TO SERIES WIN Thursday, August 18 recap

Little Falls, N.J. – Jon Kibler struck out a season-high eight batters and Nick Giarraputo went 3-for-4 to lead the Jackals to a 7-2 win over the New York Federals in the rubber match of a three-game series Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. Kibler (1-5) allowed two runs on five hits in six innings to earn the win. Cody Railsback, Kyle Gunderson and Josh Ellis each threw one inning of relief as the trio faced the minimum nine batters. Both Gunderson and Ellis made their debut with the Jackals after being acquired earlier in the day. New Jersey opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, when Mike Jones reached on a fielder’s choice, went to second on a walk, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chris Anderson. However, the Federals answered in the top of the third when they plated two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Dan Coury singled home Jacob Rosenbeck before Scott Dubben scored on a dropped third strike to Eddie Lantigua. Nick Giarraputo and Mike Jones notched back-to-back singles to lead off the fourth inning before Giarraputo came around to score on an error by Rosenbeck to tie the game. Then in the fifth inning D’Angelo Jimenez and Myron Leslie scored on a two-run double to centerfield off the bat of Giarraputo to give New Jersey a 4-2 lead. The Jackals continued to pour it on in the sixth inning when the first four hitters of the inning reached base. Sean Smith singled, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error before Jimenez singled him home. Later in the inning Mike DeJesus and Leslie scored on an error by the Federals’ left-fielder Derrick Pyles to make the score 7-2. Kyle Putnam (1-7) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings pitched. Former Jackal Mike Petrowski threw two scoreless innings of relief for New York. JACKAL BITES: Giarraputo’s double was his 25th of the season, a new careerhigh, and the most by a Jackal since 2004… With the acquisition of Gunderson and Ellis, Mike Petrowski was traded to the Federals for a player to be named later to make roster space… Railsback, Gunderson and Ellis needed just 25 pitches to record the final nine outs.

WHAT A RELIEF: New Jersey relievers have successfully converted 19 of 21 (90.4%) save opportunities this season. Last year, the Jackals converted just 22 of 29 save chances (75.8%). Four different Jackals’ relievers have saved games in 2011. Former Montclair State hurler Jeff Gogal has converted all 13 of his save opportunities. THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Jackals boast a 29-15 record in Little Falls and are batting 49 points higher at home (.304) than on the road (.255). The only Can-Am League team with a better home record than the Jackals are the Quebec Capitales (29-12). Outfielder Nick Santomauro is batting .408 (20-for-49) in 16 games at Yogi Berra Stadium (a 280 point increase from his .128 road average) while Myron Leslie sports a .362 clip at home (65 points higher than his .297 road average). MOVIN’ ON UP: During an eight-day stretch from July 25 through August 2, the Jackals sold three players to affiliated organizations. On July 25, outfielder Leonard Davis (.317-9-36 w/ a league-leading 18 doubles in 52 games) had his contract purchased by the Washington Nationals and was sent to Double-A Harrisburg. On August 31, second baseman and leadoff hitter Argenis Reyes (.306-2-29 w/ 12 steals in 60 games) was sold to Cleveland and assigned to Triple-A Columbus. On August 2, three-time Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week and July Pitcher of the Month James Leverton (8-4, 2.38 ERA in 13 starts) was sold to the Florida Marlins and assigned to the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Jackals have sold 25 players to affiliated organizations since 2006. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their season-long eight-game winning streak, which ended on June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. FOLLOW THE LEADER: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY 1917 - Coaching third in a 1-1 game against Washington, Detroit’s Ty Cobb gives Tiger base runner George Burns a shove when Burns stops at third on a long hit. Burns keeps going and scores the winning run for the Tigers. Clark Griffith protests, and Ban Johnson upholds him; the rules now ban coaches from touching a runner. The game is replayed, and Washington wins 2-0. 1951 - In his most interesting promotional stunt, Bill Veeck signs a three-foot, seveninch midget, Eddie Gaedel, who goes to bat wearing the number 1/8 in the first inning of the nightcap with the Tigers. Lefty Bob Cain laughingly walks him on four pitches. Jim Delsing then pinch runs. Two days later the commissioner bars Eddie Gaedel from appearing in any more games. 1957 - New York Giants owner Horace Stoneham announced that the team’s board of directors had voted 9-1 in favor of moving to San Francisco. The team moved to San Francisco in 1958.
