Strategic Plan 2021

From the New Hampton School Board of Trustees. As New Hampton begins its 198th year, the Board of Trustees is thrilled by the work and outcome of our strategic planning process. We have engaged the community in meaningful discussion about the important ways we can ensure that our vibrant school thrives for centuries to come. The final product of our process is documented in The New Hampton School Difference 2021, reflecting our innovative mindset, willingness to make bold decisions, and desire to offer the most relevant programs, driven by a dedicated and dynamic faculty and staff. At a time of great change in secondary school education, New Hampton School is fortunate to be building an even brighter future from a position of strength. Co-signed,

Dear New Hampton School Families and Friends, It is my privilege to lead New Hampton School at such an exciting point in our history. Over the past two centuries, our campus has been transformed, we have introduced outstanding and exceptional programs, and our bicentennial is fast approaching. In partnership with the Board of Trustees, we— the administration, faculty, staff, and our community, including alumni and parents—have seized this important opportunity to craft a strategic plan that will move New Hampton School forward into the next century. In order to sustain our wonderful community for the next two hundred years, we recognize that we must acknowledge and understand our founding principles, articulated on the following page, and the core values that have been the hallmark of a New Hampton School education since its inception in 1821. These foundational elements are at the heart of our student experience. Preserving the foundation that has built a healthy, robust school, with successful alumni and transformational stories, will only serve to make us stronger for the years to come. As such, in planning for the future, we spent time investigating our past. As we build upon our history, we have carefully considered what the world needs from a New Hampton School graduate. In an increasingly interconnected society, our mission—to cultivate lifelong learners who will serve as active global citizens—continues to resonate with our alumni. Guided by our mission and core values, we know that our future will be shaped by our ability to define the unique qualities and benefits of New Hampton School. To that end, we undertook a comprehensive evaluation of our program strengths and opportunities for improvement. We considered the evolution of current initiatives and planned the introduction of new programs that will enhance the student and faculty experience. I am pleased to share with you the New Hampton School Difference 2021, a strategic plan that supports the important role that dynamic relationships play in the educational process, and in building vibrant communities. We look forward to updating you on our progress as our strategic plan unfolds and our bicentennial approaches. Sincerely,

Joseph P. Williams P’22 Head of School

The New Hampton School Difference New Hampton School was founded on June 24, 1821 as a Free Will Baptist-oriented, coeducational institution. The School’s roots in the Free Will Baptist tradition are central to its mission and values even today as the egalitarian spirit of the Free Will Baptists permeates every aspect of New Hampton’s culture. The foundation and motivating force behind our present work rests in the belief that the mission of education should be to send young men and women into the world equipped and empowered to make better the communities in which they live. For nearly two centuries, these core values of equality and service to others have remained central to the spirit of New Hampton School. In recent years, the school has grown its offerings to incorporate the International Baccalaureate Programme, established itself as an Apple Distinguished School, advanced an Academic Support Program, and continued to provide outstanding arts and athletic opportunities for every student. A leader in innovative use of technology, experiential learning, and competency-based grading, New Hampton faculty members experiment, reflect and refine classroom strategies using a wide array of technologies to ensure student engagement and facilitate learning. Throughout its cycles of growth and innovation, New Hampton School has maintained a commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that every student is welcomed and supported. On the eve of our bicentennial celebration and with new leadership in place, New Hampton School is poised to write the next chapter in its history, one that builds upon past achievements and establishes a solid foundation for the next 200 years. As our founders so wisely did, we began this work by assessing what the world needs and is likely to need from our graduates. We believe the world needs people of substance and character with the capacity to learn and create independently and collaboratively. It needs people willing to hone and share their individual talents. These beliefs resonate with all members of the New Hampton community and allow us to draw upon our traditional strengths—a nurturing community, a diverse student body, a passionate and talented faculty and staff, and a pristine environment—to create new experiences and programs that will prepare our graduates for lives of purpose and service. Believing that these skills are best developed through experiences that foster relationships with others we have rededicated ourselves through this strategic planning process to our greatest asset, our people, and to our mission, to develop lifelong learners who will become active global citizens.

For nearly two centuries, these core values

of equality and service to others have remained central to the spirit of New Hampton School.
