The Bucket List

Three courses in three states

FROM THE EDITOR FA I R P L AY

“The new development model embraced by the largest home builders in the nation has also evolved with the changing demands of consumers in today’s market.”

The History of Golf Course Communities

I

N 1920 IN TEMPLE TERRACE FLORIDA, the first golf course living community was developed in the U.S. as a private enclave for wealthy northern socialites to spend a few months each year during the winter to enjoy golf in Florida. The original homes were built without kitchens as all dining took place at a community clubhouse. The property was part of an extensive 19000-acre reserve called Riverhills owned by Chicago socialite Bertha Palmer, who played a major role in making Sarasota the “The City of The Arts” it is today. By 1950, golf began a midcentury boom lead by Arnold Palmer’s popularity and exposure through national media. Golf course community development grew rapidly nationwide with the majority of communities being built in southern and southwestern regions. In 1960, 25% of all golf courses built were in golf course communities and resorts. In 1999 that percentage grew to over 60%, and in 2009 it was estimated that over 20% of all golf courses in the United States were part of private-living communities. Almost all communities offered golf, racket sports, and community pools. The new development model embraced by the largest home builders in the nation has also evolved with the changing demands of consumers in today’s market. The keyword today is “Community” and it encompasses a

whole new concept where the focus is on diversity in amenity-rich living. Developers are bringing feature-rich, all-inclusive, resort-style living to new communities that offer an extensive quality of life, security, unlimited amenities, and most of all convenience. Many new communities are master-planned gated communities completely accessible by golf carts with golf courses, pools, community centers, fitness centers, spas, salons, restaurants, banking, financial services, shopping, schools, and medical centers. Events, learning centers, and interest clubs connect the residents continually and emphasize inclusion and life quality opportunity. Secure, amenity-rich community living is gaining popularity across all demographics as we all are faced with one crisis after another. Have healthier and more protective communities for our lives and families is becoming the new norm. Quite simply, what started as communities for golf has now become communities for life.!

HORSESHOE BAY RESORT Lakefront Luxury in the Heart of Central Texas When it comes to nationally-acclaimed golf destinations worth exploring for a few days, Horseshoe Bay Resort belongs prominently in the conversation. For decades, Texans have known the charms of this 7,000-acre lakefront oasis, but don’t be surprised if the resort’s reputation continues to grow farther and wider. The preferred drive-to destination for discerning Texas travelers for nearly half a century, the AAA-Four Diamond and Conde Nast Readers’ Choice Award-winning Horseshoe Bay Resort shines brighter than ever after a full-scale $100 million renovation that includes four re-energized golf courses, completely upgraded guest rooms, expanded conference space, a reimagined luxury spa, and brand-new restaurant concepts in the hotel tower, yacht club and Whitewater entertainment complex.

Situated on the gleaming shores of the constant-level Lake LBJ and meandering through a rugged expanse of rolling Hill Country, the scenic Horseshoe Bay Resort is one of the few waterfront resorts in Texas. Tropically landscaped with palm trees, bold water features and the most colorful vegetation this side of Hawaii, this resort stands apart, both visually and in the guest experience. The ever-evolving Texas Hill Country surrounding Horseshoe Bay has become home to world-class winery tours and barbecue aficionados are now making pilgrimages to the Highland Lakes area for smoked-meat nirvana. Add, too, the allure of the constantly-full 6,500-acre Lake LBJ into the mix and you see why this resort area has become a prime vacation choice for so many sun and fun seekers.

GOLF AT HORSESHOE BAY RESORT All three of Horseshoe Bay’s Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designs now showcase updates. A classic Central Texas Hill Country golf experience, the scenic Apple Rock course has fresh, artful touches that include new Bentgrass greens, larger greens, plenty of renovated and scaled-down bunkers, re-shaped and leveled tee boxes, improved irrigation, and additional stone retaining walls along water hazards to improve aesthetics. Golf Digest’s “Best New Resort Course” in 1986 retains some of the most picturesque views in Texas. Meanwhile, Slick Rock -- the first of the resort’s Jones layouts to open-- underwent similar renovations, and the acclaimed Ram Rock was restored to match Jones’ original vision with enlarged greens, re-contoured and smaller bunkers, and significantly more playability. In early 2021, the Central Texas resort’s expansive renovation project will culminate with the opening of the spectacularly redesigned Cap Rock clubhouse in the coming months.

Summit Rock, Horseshoe Bay’s members-only Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, now has improved bunkers that drain more efficiently and look more aesthetically pleasing. A unique 50/50 blend of sand— half that arrives by train from California and half from a local source in San Antonio— give Summit Rock an enhanced look plus improved playability. These moves will surely bolster the reputation of all four courses. Just this past year, Horseshoe Bay Resort was named to GOLF Magazine’s 2019 Top 100 Resorts in North America list and given the Editors’ Choice Award by Golf Digest as one of the “Best Golf Resorts in the Southwest.” The Slick Rock Course holds the 16th spot on Golfweek’s list of “Best Courses You Can Play, State-By-State.”

WORLD-CLASS AMENITIES As part of a significant renovation to Horseshoe Bay Resort’s 249room Tower Hotel first floor and lobby is the reimagining of its popular first-floor restaurant as an authentic Texas barbeque smokehouse. Dubbed “The Baddest Barbeque in Hill Country,” J’s Restaurant and Bar offers guests refined Texas barbeque and authentic

Hill Country cuisine, featuring slow-cooked fare from the renowned Bad Donkey Barbeque. The breathtaking and tropically-landscaped Whitewater Putting Course, designed like a miniature regulation golf course with fairways bunkers and water hazards on the finest of putting services, is an unforgettably fun par-72 experience. The Whitewater complex is now home to the Whitewater 360 Sports Club, an energetic sports bar with dozens of flat-screen TVs and a full cocktail and bar-style food menu. The resort features four pools, including the Yacht Club Pool, an outdoor lagoon style pool with an adjacent 27-person hot tub. The resort pool is heated with fiber-optic lights as well as a hot tub and adjacent kids’ pool. White sand beaches line the lake shore near the Yacht Club Pool.

AIR TRAVEL TO HORSESHOE BAY Horseshoe Bay Resort is now offering direct charter service to and from its private jet center to packaged groups as large as 30. With exclusive ground shuttle service to the resort and its highlyacclaimed Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and Jack Nicklaus golf courses, escaping to magnificent Lake LBJ’s most beloved destination has never been easier. the Jack

Nicklaus Signature golf course opened at

Creighton Farms, a gated, custom home community just 55 minutes west of Washington, D.C. and within proximity of Washington Dulles International Airport. Each year, and for special events, the community welcomes Barbara and Jack Nicklaus for the Creighton Farms Invitational, a golf tournament that has raised more than $7 million for the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation since it began.

With the couple visiting regularly, Creighton Farms built a special home for the Nicklauses. Jack and Barbara provided input on the design, furnishings and interior decorating of the home. A large painting in the great room features a golden bear—a tribute to Jack Nicklaus’ nickname. The home is 5,400 square feet with four bedrooms and four bathrooms. It sits on just over an acre overlooking holes 9, 14 and 15 on the golf course and is walking distance from the Creighton Farms Clubhouse. The view is stunning. Creighton Farms is owned and managed by Southworth Development. “We always look forward to getting back to Creighton Farms,” said Jack Nicklaus. “It’s a beautiful setting and Southworth has created a nice blend of quality amenities, and a comfortable atmosphere for members and residents. We look forward to our next visit and reconnecting with our longtime friends.” The home exterior is a classic blend of natural stone and stucco. Inside, there’s a grand entry foyer and spiral staircase; hearth room and morning room that walk out to an expansive covered patio, there is also a covered porch. A great room with 15-foot ceiling and stone fireplace, formal library with wood paneling, a light-filled sunroom and an expansive kitchen

The home, “The Nicklaus,” is listed at $2.7 million and includes club membership. The community includes a large clubhouse, fitness center, two swimming pools, four tennis courts including two on clay. A state-of-the-art golf center is under construction and will be part of Creighton Farms’ existing world-class golf school. with custom cabinetry and granite countertops complete the first floor. Aside from the great room, ceiling heights are 10 feet throughout the main level. Upstairs, there’s a large owners suite with golf course views and a fireplace, luxuriously appointed bath and generous closets. Three additional bedrooms and bathrooms complete the home.

“The Nicklauses come back annually to participate in the Creighton Farms Invitational,” said Grant Heflin, listing agent with Creighton Realty. “But as much as they love the home, they have never been able to stay in it as often as they might like. So the decision was made to put it on the market and let someone else enjoy it.”

Cape Coral has plenty of coastline along the Gulf making it a perfect place for a beach lifestyle. There are also many islands within close distance with natural wildlife and more beaches. The city is known for its 400+ miles of canals, and has earned the nickname “Waterfront Wonderland.” The canals are very much a part of the lifestyle—many residents live along the canals and have boats to move from place to place via the water. It is also central to some of Florida’s top private golf

here are over 18,000 Golf Courses in North America. Nearly 4000 of these courses are part of a golf course living community. In almost every one of them the golf cart is the preferred mode of transportation. In many large communities like the Villages in Central Florida with over 125,000 residents, the second car is a golf cart; there are over 60,000 golf carts in the Villages that use over 100 miles of cart paths connecting the communities. The rapid shift in consumer perception, increased awareness, and the popularity of golf worldwide have augmented growth in golf resorts, golf-centric real estate developments and private clubs. Golf carts have become the norm for family resort living, hunting, gardening, and of course golfing. The growing trend is moving from gas to electric golf carts with advances in technology finding solutions for power, speed, and battery life.

GOLF CART LIVING THE RIDE

Golf carts, much like automobiles, come in various styles, colors with unlimited options and accessories available through manufacturers and aftermarket custom suppliers. If you can imagine it, they can build it. Major manufacturers are bringing advanced technology, engineering and design improvements to new carts today. New electric carts are quieter, go faster, go farther on a charge and are loaded with additional features that make them multi-purpose vehicles that are easily adaptable for street legal usage. Most of us shun smaller vehicles for personal use of the highways and byways in our life, but personal golf carts are fun, expressive and can be as cool or conservative as you wish while making a lot sense for economic green living. Our first review of carts focused on the major players in the market and what they offer for personal use golf vehicles. Moving forward, we will continue to cover golf course living and golf carts in all our issues including top luxury carts, custom buildouts and the newest innovations in technology and design.
