Welcome to New Directions, we are very proud to introduce our new course guide for 201718, where you will find a wide range of courses and information designed to give learning and employment opportunities to you and the wider community. As a community college, we believe that everyone should have access to learning, that is why we offer courses all over town in a wide variety of venues such as Community centres and Children’s Centres. We also work with a range of voluntary and community organisations who share our vision to provide engaging and targeted learning opportunities. All our tutors are experts in their subject and will work with you to give you the confidence and motivation to learn independently and develop essential skills to progress into further learning and employment. Our course and employment offer enables you to engage in further learning and helps to improve your quality of life and well-being and also your chances to gain employment. Our experienced team of advisors hold the nationally recognised Matrix accreditation for its consistently high level of service. Access to Higher Education Do you want to go to University but don’t have the right qualifications? Then have a look at our new Access to Higher Education (HE) courses. The HE Access course is designed for adults who want to enter Higher Education but lack the formal entry qualifications.
An Access to Higher Education course will give you • A chance to update your skills and prepare yourself for academic learning.
In order to progress to Higher Education courses, you may require GCSE in English and/ or GCSE Maths to fulfil your university entry requirements.
• Independent study skills including essay writing, note taking, researching and how to reference for academic writing.
This is not part of the Access to HE course but you may be able to study for these qualifications alongside your Access course.
• Skills to manage your time effectively and to develop the critical thinking and writing skills you will need to study at degree level.
Where could it take you? The HE Access qualification is widely recognised by UK universities and many actively encourage applications from mature learners with life experience. Completing the Access to HE course does not guarantee a university place – many factors will influence your chances of being accepted such as performance at interview, availability of places, life experience, commitment to study, etc.

What do I need?

How can you fund your studies? You may be able to claim government funding for your HE Access tuition fees if you are aged 23 or under on 31 August and have not previously gained a qualification at Level 3. If you already hold a level 3 qualification or are aged 24 or over you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan via Student Finance England to cover the cost of tuition fees. The Advanced Learner Loan can help you pay for the course fees and students from a low-income household in receipt of an Advanced Learner Loan may also be able to access the Advanced Learner Loan Bursary for assistance with travel, childcare and essential equipment.

The Advanced Learner Loan is not means tested or credit checked. Repayments only start once you have completed (or leave) the course and are earning more than £21,000 per year. If you undertake an Access to HE course, your loan could be written off if you successfully progress on to and complete a Higher Education course. New Directions offers flexible Access to HE options to fit into your work or childcare commitments.

Business and Customer Service Business and Administration Level 3 Diploma This Level 3 qualification is ideal if you have some knowledge and experience of administration and you want to develop your skills to implement and monitor new procedures and systems. In order to meet the requirements for this course you will need to be working in an administrative role, planning and completing tasks independently. Reading Community Learning Network (RCLN)
At New Directions we believe that everyone should have access to learning and that is why we organise courses in a variety of community venues including schools, children’s centres, community centres and Voluntary organisations.
New Directions leads the Reading Community Learning Network (RCLN). The Network currently has in excess of 40 member organisations. The Network is independently chaired and membership is open to any organisation delivering learning in Reading.
Delivering our informal Community Learning courses and employment services in your local community enables you to engage in further learning and helps to improve your quality of life and well-being and chances to gain employment.
RCLN member organisations offer a varied range of targeted and universal learning opportunities and employment support to different groups in Reading. They meet bi-monthly to share updates and develop partnership working.
Our Community Learning courses will help you to:

English & Maths English and Maths qualifications are fully-funded for learners aged 19+ who have not yet achieved their GCSE at grade C or above regardless of any other qualifications they may have. This means there are no fees payable. (Please note that this is subject to residency requirements)
We offer 3 types of qualification: • GCSE Maths Foundation Tier and GCSE English are recognised as a full Level 2 qualification, a requirement to access many further and higher learning courses. You will be assessed by formal examination in May/June 2018. • Functional Skills are qualifications in English and Maths that equip learners with the practical skills needed to live, learn and work successfully. The qualifications are available across five levels (Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2) to help develop your English and Maths skills. You may be assessed by formal or informal assessments. Functional Skills qualifications are key stepping stones in preparing for GCSE qualifications. • English and Maths Progression Awards are bite-sized units that focus on specific skills you want to develop. The Awards are designed to support your learning in a flexible and personalized manner. English for Speakers of Other Languages Our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses are for people whose first language is not English ESOL courses will: Give you the skills you need to help you settle into life and work in the UK. Prepare you to participate in daily life in Britain, visiting a doctor, talking to your neighbours, doing your shopping. Explain about British culture, democracy, the rule of law, equality and diversity and sustainable living. We offer a range of courses for all levels including intense Conversation classes where you will be able to focus on and develop your spoken language skills. We also offer courses where you will study the English Language in depth. These courses will help you develop your: Reading and Writing skills

Speaking and Listening skills.
These are accredited courses and you will work towards a City & Guilds qualification. All courses are delivered by qualified teachers and will range from 1.5 hours to 4 hours per week. Reading Community Learning Network (RCLN) New Directions leads the Reading Community Learning Network (RCLN). The network currently has in excess of 36 member organisations. The network is independently chaired. Membership is open to any organisation delivering learning in Reading. RCLN member organisations offer a varied range of targeted and universal learning opportunities and employment support to different groups in Reading.

Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing (ARAR) The BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing is the recognised qualification for front-line staff working on licensed premises, who are authorised to sell alcohol. In order to sell alcohol in England and Wales individuals must either be a Personal License Holder or Authorised by a Personal Licence Holder. For a Personal License Holder to authorise someone to sell alcohol on their behalf, they must train that person to a suitable level. Training records must demonstrate that they understand the legal implications of the sale of alcohol, have the knowledge to promote the licensing objectives and recognise their individual duty to sell alcohol responsibly.

The BIIB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing is a nationally recognised qualification which demonstrates that a suitable level of training has been achieved. The ARAR qualification also affords some protection to the personal license holder, Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) and premises license holders by strengthening the defence of due diligence in relation to the actions of their employees; where future prosecutions or a premises license review may affect continued operations and/or result in significant financial penalties. The course is delivered by Reading Borough Council’s Senior Trading Standards officer.

Advanced Learner Loans These loans are government funded to help you to pay the tuition fees charged by colleges and training organisations. Most learners aged 19 and over, studying at level 3 to 6, will qualify for these loans from the UK Government. You can apply for a loan from May 2017 for courses starting between 1 August 2017 and 31 July 2018. Look out for the logo to Identify which courses this applies to.
Enrolling on an eligible course at Level 3 to Level 6 which includes: A Levels, Access to Higher Education Diplomas, other Diplomas and Certificates, Advanced Apprenticeships or Higher Apprenticeships. When will I need to start repaying my loan?
How do I qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan? Aged 19 or over on the first day of your course (there’s no upper age-limit) and starting your course on or after 1 August 2017. Living in the UK on the first day of your course and have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for three years immediately before this.
Repayments will start from the April following the completion of your course, and there is no need to repay until then. You will only start making repayments when your income is more than £404 per week, £1750 per month or £21,000 per year. Student Finance England will ‘write off’ any outstanding Advanced Learner Loan balances you owe for an Access to HE course once you complete a higher education course. This means you don’t have to repay it.

Advanced Learner Loan How much can I borrow? You can borrow any amount from the minimum loan of £300 up to the full loan amount in the course description.
How much will the repayment be? You will only pay back 9% of any income above £21,000 a year. For example, if you were earning £25,000 a year, then the monthly loan repayment would be £30.
How much interest will be charged on the loan? Interest will be based on inflation (Retail Price Index or RPI). Depending on your income and whether or not you are still studying or you have completed your course, your interest will be calculated on a sliding scale, from RPI or RPI plus three per cent.
What happens if I change my mind/withdraw? If you do leave, then your loan will stop and you will only need to pay your loan for the sessions you have attended. You will, however, lose your deposit or upfront fee that you will have paid to us when you enrolled. Please do come and speak to our Customer Relations Officers if you are thinking of leaving as we can help you talk through your options.

Then have a look at our new HE Access courses on pages 6 & 7 Maybe you missed doing traditional qualifications at school or you have just been out of education for a long time, maybe you have settled in this country and your qualifications are not recognised. Helping you with fees
You must pay your course fee when you enrol unless your course is fully funded. Fees shown are all inclusive, unless otherwise stated.
If you are not eligible for full funding, and you are attending an accredited course (one that leads to a qualification or an exam) financial assistance may be available to help cover course costs, material costs and help with the cost of childcare.
You may need to pay other costs depending on your course, for example:

How courses are funded Many courses at New Directions are partly funded by the UK Government via the Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) and partly by you, the learner. Courses that lead to a qualification are generally subsidised by up to 50% (co-funded) by the ESFA. Due to the way the government funds our concessionary learners, we reserve the right to limit the number of funded and co-funded places on any course and/or change the guidelines on entitlement to concessionary fees mid-academic year.

Does my course have exam fees? Advanced Learner Loans
Exam fees are included in the course fee, unless otherwise stated. Unfortunately we are unable to refund exam fees, including any re-sit exam fees paid.
A government loan is available for those aged 19 and over (and resident in the UK) to help cover the costs of studying for eligible level three qualifications or above.
How do I qualify for co-funded fees and what evidence do I need to provide?
For full details on Advanced Learner Loans please see pages 38 and 39.
You will need to provide official evidence that you are: • Receiving Employment Support/ Jobseeker’s Allowance: evidence could be a recent letter from Jobcentre Plus/Department for Work and Pensions confirming that you receive this benefit (we cannot accept Jobseeker’s Allowance appointment booklets) • Receiving Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support (means tested): evidence could be a recent letter from your local authority or housing association/landlord confirming that you are receiving this benefit. • Receiving Income Support, Pension Guarantee Credit or Universal Credit (conditions apply): evidence could be a recent letter from DWP or Jobcentre Plus confirming that you are receiving this benefit. The government is phasing in Universal Credit to replace a number of existing benefits. Please note that we cannot accept Incapacity Benefit, Disability Living Allowance, Child Tax Credit or Carer’s Allowance. At the time of enrolment, your evidence must:
• Be dated within the last six months • Cover the start date of your course • Show your name as a claimant. If you are enrolling online or by telephone, we will need to see evidence of your benefit before the course starts or within two weeks of enrolment, whichever is sooner. If you are enrolling in person, we will need to see your evidence when you enrol. We will scan a copy of your evidence, and keep this on file. Your evidence will be valid for any future concessionary enrolments, for up to six months, depending on the date of your letter. If you work and have a very low income, but are not entitled to pay the concessionary fee, you may be able to apply for help towards part of the fee. Our Customer Relations Officers can provide further information.

I’m an international student, what fees do I need to pay?
What happens if my course is cancelled?
New Directions doesn’t receive any government funding for international students, and therefore we need to charge a higher fee, (known as the overseas fee). This is usually double the full published course fee.
We are committed to ensuring that every course takes place however there are times when we might need to cancel a course, for example if a tutor is unavailable or if we can’t recruit enough learners for the course to run.
In order to pay the published home fees, you will need to have been:

• Ordinarily resident in the UK or the European Economic Area (EEA) for three years preceding the start of the course.
We won’t be able to refund you if we need to change the tutor for your course.
• AND be a UK/EEA citizen or have unrestricted right of abode in the UK. Please note that there are a small number of exceptions, so please do ask the Customer Relations team who can advise on your particular circumstances.
Unfortunately, sometimes we have to cancel a class for reasons beyond our control, for example industrial action or severe weather. In these situations we cannot accept liability or issue refunds. Once you have booked onto a course your enrolment is binding and payment must be made.

Reading Libraries Libraries are free to join and use and open throughout Reading Our libraries provide: • Books: on a wide range of subjects, supporting study from primary school to undergraduate level as well as individual interests and hobbies. • E-books: a wide range of fiction and non-fiction that can be downloaded to multiple devices. • Online learning resources: a range of online courses as well as the Times Digital Archive and Britannica Online. • Adult Education 19+: In partnership with New Directions, Reading’s Adult and Community Learning, we are offering adult education courses in some of our libraries. These include accredited English and Maths courses as well as a range of Conversational English courses for speakers of other languages.
• Rhymetime: singing with rhymes is a great for language development, strengthening the bond between you and your baby and helping them to understand the world around them. It is also a great way for you to meet other parents! • Events: we run a variety of talks and workshops throughout the year. • Local Studies Illustrations: our collection can be viewed online through the library catalogue. • Internet & word-processing: library members can access PCs for internet and use of Microsoft Office software free in any branch. You will also be able to print as all our PCs have access to a colour printer.

Information and Learner Services Learners with additional needs New Directions is committed to providing an inclusive learning environment and aim to make the most of every student’s learning opportunities. It is important to us that learners with disabilities and learning difficulties feel welcome and are supported throughout their time at New Directions.

All additional support is based on individual need and assessment of how we can best help.
• Individual help from a Learner Support Worker (LSW).
We will try to provide teaching materials in a suitable format, including digitally, large print or audio. Additional support may be provided in the form of one-to-one, where a Learner Support Worker (LSW) would be allocated. Also, where appropriate and sufficient evidence is available we can offer access arrangements for exams. For exams access arrangements: • Let your tutor know your needs as soon as possible. Some support arrangements and adjustments take longer to arrange with the awarding organisations. • Provide your tutor up to date evidence at the start of your course. • If you need to attend with a personal

If you think that your reading, writing and spelling skills are letting you down, we might be able to help.
New Directions is always looking for new volunteers to help our learners to fulfil their potential in the classroom.
New Directions offer a Dyslexia course to support your literacy needs. The course is a blend of group activities and individual use of the IDL (Indirect Dyslexia Learning) computer programme.
If you have a passion for helping others to achieve then this could be the opportunity you have been looking for. Our volunteers give invaluable support to learners on a wide range of courses including Maths, English, ESOL and Community learning.
An assessment of dyslexic tendencies will be necessary before enrolling on this course.
We would like to recruit more volunteers to join our team and work alongside qualified and professional tutors.

Community advisors
Our Information, advice and guidance service provides confidential impartial one to one support, workshops to individuals.
Would you like to make a positive contribution to adult education? Join our Community Learning and Skills Advisory Board (CLSAB).
As well as general advice and action planning to set you on your way we can help you with aspects of the job search and application process, identify support to which you may be entitled and identify learning opportunities to help you succeed.
Advisors are appointed by the CLSAB body to represent community interests in the context of an adult learning service. There isn’t one type of person best suited to becoming an advisor and you don’t need a qualification to do so. The most important qualities are an interest in adult education and a desire to contribute to the life of New Directions.
You don’t need to be enrolled on a New Directions course to use this service but you will need to register with us by filling in one of our enrolment forms.
Self-Service Job Search Register with New Directions to attend a short Introduction and start using our range of support facilities to help you while looking for a job; internet job search, printing and photo copying and use of telephone for job search, local media advertising job vacancies and local labour market information.
