This new collection of paintings by Nina Brooke is dedicated to her home county of Cornwall and the dream-like luxury of escapism. Diving into memories of time spent by the sea, these paintings tell stories of adventure and wanderlust, inviting the viewer to submit to the sea breeze and rolling swell, whilst recalling their own experiences of hazy beach days.

Nina is a traveller at heart and her paintings reflect an ever evolving obsession with the ocean. She comes from a family of mariners - as a baby she was sailing across the Atlantic with her parents at the helm - an experience which sealed her compulsion to capture the inescapable joy of life lived near the water. In recent years, Nina has gained an international reputation for her colourful representations of the beach and surf culture, all seen from an aerial perspective. Soaring high above the shores of the world’s most picturesque places, her painterly scenes pop with vivid colour as she depicts the playful patterns of humans existing alongside nature playing, surfing, resting, exploring.

Nina’s travels to tropical shores have defined much of her practice but she always returns home to Cornwall. Serendipitously, the restrictions caused by COVID-19 have provided Nina with an unexpected opportunity to tune into the topographical variations of her home and she has spent the last few months exploring Cornwall’s most westerly tip, from St Ives all the way round Land’s End and up to the Lizard. Setting out by land, air and sea, Nina has tracked the undulating footpaths and moored up on secret beaches, sketching as she goes and using her drone to capture breathtaking scenes from above.

The result is a colourful homage to the sea and a reminder of the impact of mankind upon nature - physically in terms of the abstracted forms seen on the shore, and more generally in terms of damaging environmental pressures. These paintings, whilst beautiful, bright and fun, are imbued with an important call to protect the ocean and respect the environment, reflecting Nina’s enduring love for her home and the importance of respecting these fair shores.
