New Craftsman Gallery presents a second collaborative exhibition by father and daughter Ralph and Alice Freeman. Their recent work takes two very different approaches to materials, process and intent – for Alice, an underlying obsession with exploring the intricacies of the organic, and for Ralph a search for the abstract within the architectural. Both their practices, however, share within them a foundation of the process of drawing. Back to Back is a re-evaluation of two diverse perspectives after lockdown, the finding of another way back to today, but not back to before.
My work is an exploration of material and process: A kind of mutual conversation between me and the medium which directs and influences me as much as I do it. This constant dialogue moulds my final structures or images which I hope reveal the inherent contradictions in all things: the combination of fragility with strength, friction with playfulness, the true force of femininity. Alice Freeman’s “work looks like biological artifacts that have been excavated from deep within the earth, matter that has formed by geological processes over eons of time… forms mantled in chromite black, gnarled and pitted draw you in with the attraction of a black hole. The blackness is devoid of life yet somehow these forms attest to an eternity of a life-giving cycle.” Afterview 2020

B I O G RA P H Y Born in St Ives, Cornwall 1991, Alice Freeman moved to London to do a Foundation in Fine Art at Byam Shaw School of Art in 2008. She went on to complete a Drawing and Fine Art Degree at Camberwell College of Art, in 2013. Shortly after graduating she received a scholarship to study and work on the ‘Above and Below Ground’ Project in Siena, Italy. Moving to Bristol in 2014, she became an Artist Network member of the RWA where she regularly shows her work. This year Freeman was part of a collaborative residency at The Garage in Bristol and has an exhibition scheduled in early 2022 with Durden and Ray in Los Angeles. She is a member of Spike Island Print and B.V. Studios.
