INTRODUCTION BY PAUL MATHESON When I lost my sight, I lost my passion, or at least I thought I had.

A chance meeting with Newcastle United Foundation changed my life.

I am a huge Newcastle United fan, I was a season ticket holder and I would never miss a match. I was in shock when my vision started to fade. The Foundation’s support meant that when I lost my sight and I was at my lowest point there was a Visually Impaired football coaching session I could join. From there my coach, Reggie, encouraged me to follow my passion to become a coach, something I had long given up on. Together we challenged the boundaries and in 2015 I qualified as the first Visually Impaired FA Level 1 coach.

I am so of proud of my achievements and what’s even more wonderful, is that the Foundation is too.

They have celebrated my success and given me some fantastic opportunities. I’m now a Volunteer Coach for the Children’s Visually Impaired Team and I love it. I get to pass on the confidence, skills and enthusiasm that the Foundation has given me. When the Club held the open training session at the start of last season I was invited to coach on the pitch at St James’ Park during the Foundation showcase – it was a dream come true to be on that turf. I was incredibly proud to be the recipient of the inaugural Alder Sweeney Award, in recognition of my contribution to grassroots football, which Foundation Patron Shola Ameobi presented to me last year.

That is what is fantastic about Newcastle United Foundation – they take you on a journey.

The pathways they have for participants really encourages people to stay involved. The staff are passionate, they challenge you, they don’t let you settle, they want you to be the best you can be, whatever programme you’re involved in.

THE YEAR 2014/15 It’s difficult to put into words the impact that the Foundation has had on my life but I hope you get an indication of how much their programmes do matter. And I’m just one of 50,000 people they work with each year - imagine all the wonderful stories they could tell you!

This Annual Review gives the Foundation the chance to show you how it supports its local community and how the impact it can have on people’s lives can be huge. Without your fundraising, donations, corporate partnerships and grants the community would miss out on everything great that the Foundation does. This review of 2014/15 is not just about who and what, it is about where. St James’ Park is in the heart of our city, but the Foundation is here to take Newcastle United to the local community.

In this report we hope to show just how we are embedded in schools and neighbourhoods across the region. The Newcastle United brand plays a vital role in helping us reach almost 50,000 people across the North East and the impact of our work goes beyond the stadium into Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and Northumberland.

Since we launched in 2008 we have worked hard to build meaningful and sustainable relationships with schools. Last season we established partnerships with 171 Primary, 36 Secondary and 34 Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools. Our sporting and education programmes help young people lead fit and active lifestyles and reach their potential in the classroom too.

We are just as proud of the work we do in local communities outside of the school gates.

Last year saw the expansion of Kicks, Football for All and United 4 Employment initiatives in new venues including North Shields, Berwick, Ashington and Walker.

WALKER ACTIVITY DOME

NEWCASTLE

Walker Activity Dome is a venue in the heart of the city’s East End. The ‘Dome’ is now home to many sporting and community programmes.

NEWCASTLE COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP We launched a course with Newcastle College for 16-19 year olds who want to work in sports coaching.

Two students are now employed by the Foundation.

DISABILITY FOOTBALL AT WALKER ACTIVITY DOME Jack, 17 from Washington, is deaf and has Cerebral Palsy. His Mum, Carol, struggled to find somewhere suitable where he could make new friends and just have fun.

ST JAMES’ PARK We delivered ‘Get Started’ to 68 unemployed young adults, supporting transition into work, training and education.

Carol started bringing Jack to the Foundation’s weekly Cerebral Palsy Football Club at Walker Activity Dome after a friend recommended the programme to her.

Carol said: “The coaches have been brilliant and they are always so considerate about the limitations Jack faces so if he can’t do a particular drill, they have something else for him to try instead. He’s taken a real shine to one of the coaches in particular, Andy, who has learnt some signs so he can communicate with Jack. Gestures like that makes such a difference.”

“Jack is so much more confident since he started coming to the sessions. He felt very isolated before but now it’s all about the football sessions. It’s so great to see him get excited about taking part and enjoying himself. I think he would go every day of the week if he could!”

Jack added: “My favourite part is playing a match during the sessions – I love it if I score a goal! It is hard for me, it wears me out and I fall over a few times but it doesn’t put me off.

It’s my favourite day of the week and I miss it when it’s not on.”

In 2014/15 Newcastle United Foundation coached 2,286 disabled footballers.

The Foundation’s Disability Squads include Deaf, Visually Impaired, Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Amputee teams.

FIVE ASIDE AT MOORBRIDGE

NORTH SHIELDS & WIDEOPEN Kicks venues are working with over 400 youngsters.

Five Aside, funded by the Premier League PFA Community Fund and the BT Supporters Club, targets students most in need of additional support or alternative educational curriculums in SEN Schools and Pupil Referral Units.

Garry Wells was referred to Moorbridge in Year 7 after incidents of aggressive behaviour towards his peers and had frequently been in trouble with the police. Gary loves football and it was a huge incentive for him to earn enough reward points to be able to attend Newcastle United Foundation sessions with Project Officer Carl.

Garry said “I got kicked out of school for being in trouble with the police. I used to hate going to school. The teachers didn’t believe in me so I used to ignore them, throw pencils at the students, fight. I don’t do that now. I go to Moorbridge and it’s fun. I’m glad I’m here. I really enjoy school now, I learn more. Carl is great, he is probably the best person I’ve ever met.

He gives me more confidence. I really look forward to our sessions.”

Carl added: “When I first met Garry I could see he loved football but he was quite shy and lacked confidence when it came to getting involved with the sessions. He has progressed loads, he has definitely come out of his shell and started helping with the sessions.

He’s become a different person.”

TYNEMET COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP 44 hours coaching per week; 112 players; 24 students on FA Level 1 Training and Assessment.

“Moorbridge PRU would like to thank Newcastle United Foundation for giving our young people the opportunity to develop their confidence, self-esteem and football skills, as well as enabling them to complete units towards an ASDAN qualification. These opportunities and experiences will no doubt stay with staff and students for the rest of their lives. We look forward to building even stronger relationships with Newcastle United Foundation and all its partners now and in the future” Michael Tate, Moorbridge PRU Five Aside launched in September 2015 and over three years will work with almost 550 pupils.

MATCH FIT AT SEATON SLUICE FIRST SCHOOL

We worked with 632 children at Soccer Schools and Fun Days across the area.

Match Fit uses football to promote healthy eating and the importance of regular exercise among primary school children.

In 2014/15 the Foundation delivered 59 six week Match Fit courses, working with 1,589 school children, including pupils at Seaton Sluice First School in South East Northumberland.

Each week, lessons were split between classroom learning and physical activity, children learned to set achievable goals that will help them become more fit, healthy and active.

In 2015, the Foundation developed a partnership with Northumbria University to provide robust evidence about the success of the programme.

In the six weeks at Seaton Sluice First School, 96% of pupils significantly improved their nutritional knowledge, 79% increased their fitness knowledge and 86% performed better in a walking test at the end of the programme, than they did at the start.

“It was great to see the importance of healthy lifestyle choices, including foods to eat as well as exercise, presented in a way where the children could take responsibility for doing something themselves to have a positive impact on their lives. The physical activities were excellent- very engaging and all of the coaches really made the effort to get to know the children on a personal level. It is without hesitation that I would recommend Match Fit as an excellent programme.”

KICKS AT GATESHEAD REDHEUGH Kicks helps young people achieve their goals through football. In 2014/15 2097 young people aged 14 to 19 took part in Kicks at 11 different venues across the region.

Funded by Sport England via the Premier League and local partners including Arch Homes, Four Housing, North Tyneside Council, Gateshead Council (Local Community Fund), Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner and Postcode Community Trust. Kicks uses the Newcastle United brand to engage young people at risk of exclusion, in regular football, sport and personal development activities.

Luke Lamb, 17, joined Kicks at Gateshead Redheugh when he was 15 because he loved football and wanted to play with his peers. As time went on he became one of the older participants in the group and recognised that he could be a positive role model for other young people so he decided to step up to inspire others.

He began volunteering alongside Foundation coaches, taking the register and leading warmup sessions. Luke then enrolled on an FA Level 1 coaching course delivered by the Foundation and Northumberland FA which he passed with flying colours.

Luke continues to volunteer at Gateshead Kicks and Gateshead Redheugh Boys Club, using everything he has learned from the Foundation to develop other players.
