ROUND 10 CEO REPORT Matt Harris, CEO—Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League Results in round 9 of the Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League saw Western Suburbs, South Newcastle, Macquarie and Central Newcastle walk away with victories. The Rosellas had to fight back from a half-time deficit to overcome Cessnock 26 to 12 at Cessnock Sportsground. The Maitland Pickers stormed home against the South Newcastle Lions but fell 6 points short of a remarkable comeback while Central Newcastle outlasted a dogged Kurri Kurri at St John Oval. The match of the round was undoubtedly the Macquarie v Lakes United fixture which saw the Scorpions snatch a one point win with a late filed goal. Round 10 action will see only two games played in the Business Plaza Cup due to the unavailability of both Townson and Harker Ovals. Consequently the South Newcastle v Cessnock and Western Suburbs v Kurri Kurri games have been deferred with the details of the rescheduled fixtures to be confirmed in the coming days. The two games to be played see the Maitland Pickers hosting 2nd placed Macquarie. After a promising start to the season the Pickers have been winless since round 5 and will need a victory against a quality Scorpions side to keep pace with the top 5. On Sunday Central Newcastle travel to Cahill Oval to take on neighbours Lakes United. A very important game for both clubs which should ensure an entertaining and fierce battle. This game will be the BarTV Feature Match and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au). A reminder to keep up-to-date with everything Newcastle Rugby League including match day scores by following us on Facebook (NewcastleRL) and Twitter (@Newcastle_RL). Matt Harris Chief Executive Officer Newcastle Rugby League.

CESSNOCK This week we again head to Townson Oval for the second time in as many weeks. Following last week’s loss the Goannas need to start putting some W's together

First Grade, leading 12-4 into the second half the Goannas failed to close out the match. Turnovers between the 30's continually invited Wests into the game to which they took full advantage, no doubt a game that got away. Reserve Grade, a 96m intercept try to Tory Neville secured a much deserved and highly entertaining 26-20 victory. A great team display led upfront by See, McCord and Stevens whilst Neville and Bell were the puppeteers. U19s 32-18 victors with Wests leading late into the match the young Goannas pulled out all the stops in securing the victory. Peel, O'Brien and Ireland were amongst the standouts. LLT Goanna girls had another spirit led performance, going set for set in the first half to trail 10 nil at the break before a classy Wests outfit ran out 28-0 winners. Congratulations Nick Lawrence on your first grade debut against West Newcastle in round 9. Don't Knock the Nocks!

LAKES UNITED Another three away wins out of four is always a good result with the First grade match lost by a single point. Again a great job done by our back room staff, players and coaches, keep hanging in there everyone. The First grade fixture was very tough and both teams gave their supporters hope of good results later in the season. Great to see our friends from the Special Olympics organisation again – what an inspiration they are. Lakes today host Central who are experiencing a fine season. The highlight of the day is the battle for the Creer Cup between the First grade sides. Thank you to Brendan Walsh and the ‘Creer Team’ for their fabulous ongoing support. Likewise the three early matches will well worth watching. ‘Shepps’ Reserve grade and Robbie Paynes U/19s team are playing good football at the moment whilst the match between our ‘Seagalls’ and front runners the ‘Butcher Birds’ should be very exciting. Good luck to all the players, play well and enjoy your match.

Our Membership draw was not won at our last home game therefore it jackpots to $400 today. Please have your membership card ready in case it is your Membership number that is drawn. Finally don’t forget everyone is welcome back at the Belmont Sportsman’s Club after the day’s action where cold beer, great food and a warm welcome are ensured. MACQUARIE The Scorpions won their first grade game 13-12 against Lakes United last weekend with some very resolute defence late in the second half to repel the Lakes side to come away with hard fought win Unfortunately the Reserve Grade side suffered their second loss of the season but are still well placed on the competition ladder. They are sure to try and put last week’s disappointment behind them and come out firing this weekend against Maitland. The U19s are just starting to come to grips with the grade intensity and requirements and playing some very good football. The Ladies League Tag are still to find their first win of the season and suffered another heavy defeat at the hands of Lakes. But the ladies are still trying and I am sure that they will improve in the second half of the season. This week it doesn’t get any easier with the Scorpions travelling to Coronation Oval in what should be very hard fought close encounters in front of a very good crowd.

MAITLAND Last week we saw a great 2nd half performance to edge ahead, but unfortunately Souths finished off how they started and took the points. Reserve Grade also lost in a cliff hanger, with 19s continuing to fly the flag for the club in another strong performance. The ladies tried hard and dosplayed an improved defensive performance against a strong opposition. This week we are at home again against Macquarie Scorpions. Come along and support The Pickers at Coronation. Thankyou to ALL our Sponsors as without you the club does not function. Please Support our Sponsors. NEXT WEEK: Away Game V Central - SUNDAY

SOUTH NEWCASTLE Today we again welcome Cessnock to Townson Oval, our third clash with them for the season. Hopefully South will present the ground in a better condition than what we offered a fortnight ago when adverse weather conditions forced us to play on a quagmire

The 'Lions' trip to Coronation Oval last Sunday threatened to emulate our First Grade first round clash with Maitland, South winning the first half but being outplayed comprehensively in the second half to lose the game, This round South played some good football to lead 286 at 'lemons' but without any quality ball in the second half allowed “The Pickers” to gain the lead 30-28 with 15 minutes remaining on the clock. However South levelled up with a penalty and scored a late try to grab the two points, winning the game 36-30. The Reserve Grade played way below their best but scrapped home 20-18, maintaining their position as undefeated ladder leaders. Although beaten 6-28 the Under 19s acquitted themselves well, having to play the whole game with only 13 players. The coach was well pleased with their spirit. The South HPP Ladies League Tag team again played some enterprising footy to claim a win 26-0. AWARDS Coaches Player Players Player
