A North East that writes its own story and fights for a more creative future.

Welcome to Live Theatre’s new season. We emerge from our bumper 50th year with a new vision guiding who we are, why we are and what we are here to do. We want this region to speak for itself and to speak loudly. It shouldn’t have to be a fight but sadly it is. Creativity is being squeezed out of schools, city centres and daily lives. But there is hope of course. With all the great imaginations that surround us, from playwrights to schoolchildren, we can dream, create and take action together.

This summer Northumberland playwright Stewart Pringle kicks off (quite literally) with a stunning play The Bounds bringing ancient football into contact with the historic ritual of ‘beating the bounds’ that once marked our land. The play

is so good the Royal Court also want it (but don’t worry, you get it first).

In Autumn acclaimed Sunderland writer Jessica Andrews (Saltwater, Milk Teeth) turns her hand to the world’s first stage adaptation of Rose Glass’ truly terrifying film Saint Maud; combining the thrill of a great ghost story with a truly virtuoso central performance, scored by one of contemporary music’s most original voices Gazelle Twin

And finally, in Spring next year, legendary Middlesbrough playwright Ishy Din takes us back to South Shields in 1977 to the historic visit of Muhammad Ali with his searing new play Champion, looking at the effect that Ali’s visit had on two warring brothers and their widowed mother.

We take young voices seriously at Live Theatre and are thrilled to offer an activist piece Fed Up devised and performed by young people as well as our wintry offering Blitzen On The Tyne by Danielle Burn created with schoolchildren.

There is so much more throughout the year, from top visiting work to local legends, and more still to come that is not in these pages. Keep checking our socials and sign up to our newsletter to make sure you get our announcements as they come, hot off the press and always LIVE.

The fight is on! Enjoy it.

he year is 1553, the true Golden Age of English football. It’s the Allen Valley Whitsun Game, and men will die today.

This is the big one, and it’s been raging for hours. Percy and Ro are stuck on the boundaries, again, on a pitch that stretches as far as the eye can see. Something’s different this year, something’s on the change. The ground is frozen hard as Weardale granite, men in black cloaks beat the bounds with willow branches, and a strange light is burning in the sky.

Northumberland writer Stewart Pringle makes his Live Theatre debut with this astonishing new peat black comedy of rural divides, extreme village

sport and the boundaries that mark out our lives.

What makes magic magic?

And is there really a Magic Circle Emergency Hotline for magicians to call in distress?

This Is Not A Magic Show is a critically acclaimed performance of and about sleight-of-hand magic: its invisible mechanics, its clichés, and what it tells us about live theatre and make-believe. In a conversational yet crafted approach, Vincent Gambini presents astonishing closeup magic that invites us to question how enchantment and wonder are produced within a theatrical situation.

Possibly the first of its kind, Vincent Gambini’s This Is Not A Magic Show is part performance-lecture, part

ALL WHITE EVERYTHING BUT ME

“I dream now too, of the future, of the life that will be lived there, because we dared to live in hope, here.”

Coinciding with Wimbledon, we are thrilled to welcome this awardwinning debut play by our Associate Artist Kemi-Bo Jacobs inspired by the remarkable life of tennis player Althea Gibson.

Born into a family of sharecroppers in South Carolina, Althea became the first black person to win Wimbledon, in 1957. Despite the magnitude of her achievements her story has been somewhat erased from history. First produced at Alphabetti Theatre, this play celebrates Althea’s unique life, while asking the questions: What is History? Who decides who is remembered and who is erased?

‘A smartly written and compellingly performed onewoman show about a groundbreaking, but often overlooked, tennis champion.’

We’re Not Going Back

5 Mines. 3 Sisters. 1 Cause. (And a six pack of Babycham)

2024 is the fortieth anniversary of the 1984/85 miners’ strike, a dispute that still resonates today. But the strike wasn’t just about pickets vs police – in this hard-hitting musical comedy there are no miners and no cops. Instead, we follow the fortunes of three sisters in a pit village, hit hard by the Government’s war against the miners and determined to set up a

branch of ‘Women Against Pit Closures’.

Early 1984, and Olive, Mary and Isabel are sisters whose everyday squabbles collide with a strike that forces them to question their lives, their relationships and their family ties.

This strike wasn’t just a war fought on the battlegrounds of picket line, Parliament and public opinion. It was as much a battle in the homes and families of those fighting for their communities.

We’re Not Going Back tackles the resilience of

working communities, the make-and-mend fabric of family and the power of sticking two fingers up to a Government hell-bent on destruction… and all with humour, song and a six pack of Babycham.

An ALPHABETTI THEATRE in association with LIVE THEATRE and CRISIS SKYLIGHT presentation

Written and directed by ALI PRITCHARD

Performed by MALCOLM SHIELDS

A high octane, energetic, festive show from an award-winning creative team, with an incredible soundtrack, that tells the story from an invisible community.

It’s the 23rd of December and Dave is preparing his Christmas tradition – to get blind drunk and dance the night away to the soundtrack in his head. The music helps him - it frees him, drowns out the voices and keeps him alone – well, avoided. He’s a dancing drunk to a soundless soundtrack, until the buzz from his phone stops the noise – bringing him back to the real world.

It’s a text that gives him the chance to create a new Christmas tradition and meet his grandson for the first time.

Present written and directed by Alphabetti Theatre’s founder and departing Artistic Director Ali Pritchard was first produced in December 2019, in partnership with Crisis Skylight Newcastle. Present tells the story of Dave’s struggle with addiction, homelessness, and the battle to buy a Christmas present.

‘The audience left with no uncertain knowledge that they had witnessed a great piece of theatre.’

“Supporting Live Theatre, a place I started my career, on Newcastle’s Quayside, is not just about preserving a cultural gem; it’s about nurturing the seeds of creativity and providing a fertile ground for aspiring artists within the region and beyond to flourish. Investing in this vibrant training ground for the arts is an investment in the future of creativity, innovation, and the soul-stirring magic that Live Theatre continues to bring.”

“I love being a Friend of Live Theatre. There are great opportunities to attend rehearsals and book early for shows (and get a discount at the bar!) but the most important thing is it means supporting local talent. It is fabulous value for a few pounds a month.”

Ticket Levy**

Live Theatre is based in a complex of special, historic buildings on Newcastle’s Quayside. It is a unique space that we care about and strive to maintain to the highest level.

This year we have introduced a Ticket Levy to all of our bookings to support the cost of looking after our buildings. A levy is an additional charge added to your ticket price which is ring fenced for something particular. We will use the money raised by the Levy to invest in and maintain our beautiful buildings.

We have resisted implementing any additional charges before as we do our best to look after the theatre and keep ticket prices as low as we possibly can. However, every year we spend over £50,000 on basic annual repair and maintenance costs and this is before we add in

Concession

From £6

Some previews/early matinees/off-peak/ shorter performances

emergency repairs and the cost of running the building which is increasing every year.

We have set the Levy at £1 per ticket, if we sell 15,000 tickets per year we will have £15,000 we don’t currently have that is ringfenced for protecting the venue you know and love.

We haven’t taken this decision lightly as we want as many people as possible to enjoy a night out with us. We’d like to thank you in advance for supporting us and you can be assured we are grateful for the support you give us.

Exchanges: Tickets can be exchanged for another performance of the same show if you contact us at least 48 hours before the original performance. A fee of £1 per ticket (up to a maximum of £5 per transaction) applies. All tickets must be produced before an exchange can be processed. Exchanges are subject to availability and at Live Theatre’s discretion.
