“Your sense of space comes from what you feel, not just what you see.” “What gives a space character has a lot to do with the textures: here we have the brick wall, the glass tile in the backsplash, the wood floor, the cabinetry. The neutral palette provides softness that works beautifully with these bold, earthy textures, and acts as a backdrop for everything else.” Mary Jo Peterson, CKD, CBD, CAPS, is an award-winning designer and owner of a Connecticut-based design firm.

springtime. Spring in the Pacific Northwest is always a joyous time, when gray skies and rain dissipate and bring forth the most vibrant, colorful and lush foliage of the new season. It’s also an exciting time at Luxe Interiors + Design as we announce our name change from Luxe Seattle to Luxe Pacific Northwest. Oregon has long been an important artery for Seattleites, and vice versa, as residents regularly venture to and from both states to visit beach communities, antiques shops, galleries, museum exhibits or the newest hip restaurant. As well, Oregon has continually been an important area of distribution for Luxe, with the Beaver state representing some of the best architecture and design in the region. As we lovingly welcome the state of Oregon back to our fold, we’re also gearing up for our Barkitecture event in May at the Seattle Design Center, where local design professionals will create luxury doghouses and gardens that will then be auctioned off for charity. We can’t think of a better way to ring in the season.

IN BLOOM The Washington Park Arboretum is one of my favorite places and, as a runner, provides wonderful routes for me to explore. Spring in the arboretum is particularly peaceful and serene, overflowing with truly dazzling botanical specimens. My favorite? The magnolia buds that create a beautiful pink landscape so achingly lovely you’d swear you were in a painting. April is prime blooming season, so head over on a sunny day with a blanket, a good book and some snacks and you’ll be set. depts.washington.edu/uwbg/gardens

COLOR PLAY Maison & Objet, Europe’s premier trendsetting design show, presents new designs from both well-loved names in the industry and newcomers alike; but, luckily, serious design and serious fun aren’t mutually exclusive. This winter, inspirations from the Paris-based trade show came from exhibitors who stepped outside the box and into a world of folly and whimsy, resulting in a sea of colorful offerings, unusual silhouettes and unexpected materials. One striking example of the cheerful, eclectic vibe came courtesy of Italian potter Paola Paronetto, whose handmade vases were prominently on display. Paronetto uses clay mixed with cellulose fiber to craft her Paper Clay series. Corrugated patterns and bold hues make for compelling art…and a welcome breath of euphoria. maison-objet.com; paolaparonetto.com

THE CONVERSATION Fashioned after a series of imaginary dialogues between two of Italy’s most iconic designers, “Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion” showcases the work of these seemingly diverse women as it uncovers surprising similarities in their respective approaches to design. On view May 10 through August 19 at The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the 80-piece retrospective will examine Schiaparelli’s work, closely associated with the Surrealist movement, from the late 1920s to the early ’50s, and Prada’s affinity for Postmodernist design, highlighted through signature objects created in the last 25 years. Innovative and provocative, the exhibit offers an engaging look at the stylish genius inherent in both design pioneers. metmuseum.org

+ Known for an extraordinary design range, it’s no surprise that Phillips Collection is blurring the lines between art and functionality through its latest product revelation. Varying in color from vibrant to subdued and ranging in a multitude of sizes, these overlapping parasols are constructed on light canvas atop metal frames and possess the ability to emit light.

+ Continuously striving to provide sustainability and responsible design to the masses, Organic Modernism is trailblazing forward and holding fast to the mantra professed by famed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer that true design is only achieved once accessible by the everyday person. Here, framed in FSC-certified American walnut wood featuring two brass front legs, is the ever-impressive and ecominded Alma brass chair—a front row seat to the future of design.

“The elegant silhouette of this beautifully imagined chair is a perfect balance of masculine and feminine. The gold-dipped saber legs give a mod, jewel-like effect while the wood frame evokes an earthy, organic feel. The turquoise upholstery is fresh and zippy—a perfect pair to an entryway.”

“In my book, you can’t go wrong with vintage Venini, and this is a gorgeous example. I love the tangerine detailing that appears to be painted on so graphically. Hang this to add an instant pop of spring and liveliness to any interior space.”

Philp’s primary objective—to create a processional element between a Medina property’s main house and its boathouse—was realized by applying a lively canvas of rosa glauca, artemisia and iris sibirica to accent cascading Bandera granite support walls. Commissioned by an avid gardener to create a fully functional hillside greenhouse on a Magnolia property, landscape architect Jason Henry of Seattle-based Berger Partnership transformed a recreational terrace— once complete with a regulation-size tennis court—into a green thumb’s utopia. “The homeowner requested that we align the chief thematic elements of the greenhouse with those of the home,” says Henry. “The shed was fabricated from cedar lumber and the flooring was laid with Pennsylvania bluestone, both of which are found on the interior and exterior of the home.” The sun-loving foliage surrounding the aluminum structure—which include flowering sweet peas and marigolds— are replenished with rainwater that is collected from the greenhouse’s roof, adding an eco-savvy touch. bergerpartnership.com

The aspirations of our customers have the largest influence. We shape our business according to client needs and styles. 2.

HENREDON & SCHOENER

“As a family business, we constantly inspire each other to rise to any challenge and provide our clients with the absolute highest standards and quality.”

How do you define a successful project? Success relies on a positive client experience from start to finish. If they are willing to recommend us, we’ve achieved success.

While she always loved fabrics, it wasn’t until adulthood that Schoener discovered her creative passion. “After much trial and error, I reupholstered our family sofa, simultaneously sparking the evolution of a hobby into a business,” says Schoener. Years later, her sons, Brian and Matt, joined her, and a partnership with upscale furniture maker, Henredon, soon followed. Today, Henredon & Schoener welcomes clients like family–a tradition that began in 1976.

What are the key influences in your work today?

3.

How do you think your clients would characterize you? While we each offer individual talents, clients would characterize us as knowledgeable, personable and extremely fun to work with.

4.

Is your work easily recognizable, why or why not? Our clients not only recognize our work, but most importantly, they immediately recognize their personality reflected in our design.

What do you like most about your job? This industry welcomes our creativity on a daily basis while working with exciting products, and most importantly, amazing clients and colleagues.

Seneca, the venerable Roman philosopher, once said, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” This adage couldn’t be truer for Matt Schwenk, an artist living in Spokane who uses emotion to fuel his

intense aura-like paintings. He may have skipped formal training—he counts color theory as his only art class—but he’s schooled in life experiences and shows his sentiments through multiple layers of oil paint, resin and pumice stone. “I lay down colors based on emotion,” Schwenk says. “Each one is like a diary entry and I channel the tribulations of my moods at the time of production.” This attitude is what got Schwenk noticed at a charitable auction when he created a 2-by-2-foot painting for Tiffany & Co. and, as a result of the display, landed an exhibit at Seattle showroom Trammell-Gagné. Three years later, the work continues to evolve, as Schwenk mixes natural with synthetic and free-flowing with structured to create pieces that radiate with energy. “You have to get your point across without saying a word,” he says. mschwenk.com; 509.991.8882

EMOTIONAL RESPONSE

MATT SCHWENK Art icons: Andy Warhol. I’m such a fan of his brilliant use of color and the ability to turn mundane subject matter into iconic imagery. I also adore local artist Cassandria Blackmore.

Picasso or van Gogh? Picasso. I relate more to the abstract elements of things and the people who can convey their message in non-conventional ways.

Personal style: Urban with the occasional glamorous twist—like a sideways hat, tank top and a bracelet from David Yurman.

Current projects: I’m finishing up a few new pieces for Trammell-Gagné, and I’m about to start an 8-by-7-foot piece that will slide open to reveal a television.

Dream collaboration: I’d love to work with David Bromstad. I met him a while back when he was doing some work in Seattle. He is such a kind and fun person, and his designs always have a playful, fun, loud aspect to them. I think our work would mesh well. LUXE INTERIORS

Lighting designer Yuri Kinoshita weaves a custom project in her Seattle studio. Opposite: One of Kinoshita’s objects of admiration, Kit Webster, also uses light at his medium. Here, he illuminates Ron Robertson-Swann’s sculpture, Vault, on public display in Melbourne, Australia.

Yuri Kinoshita is not the first Japanese lighting designer to employ paper as a medium—Noguchi certainly blazed that trail. But the Kyotoborn, Seattle-based artist brings a unique vision to what she calls

Kinoshita recently completed a custom lighting installation at the Momiji restaurant in Seattle. Shown is a detail of the kinran textiles she used from Japan.

“woven light”—the fusing of paper and light into creations that make a statement even when the bulb is turned off. “Light fixtures need to maintain their charm in the daytime,” says Kinoshita, who crafts her sculptural designs from traditional handmade Japanese papers, linen paper and bamboo fibers that she infuses with a luminous powder. Her affinity for textiles comes naturally; her family has produced traditional kimonos under Kinoshita Co. for three generations, and she sometimes incorporates the delicate silks into her work. The designer has since founded the company Umbo to market her own pieces. “Light gives us warmth, comfort and pleasure,” she says, “and I want my designs to surpass object form and take on their own character—like they’ve become a new member of the family.” yurikinoshita.com; 310.619.5300

PAPER ROUTE

YURI KINOSHITA Greatest influence: The late Sofu Teshigahara, founder of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana for flower arranging; his artworks had strength and purpose. He and I also shared a love of the Kojiki writings, which means record of ancient matters.

Dream collaboration: I’d love to work on Lady Gaga’s stage design, with Yoko Ono, and with Australian artist Kit Webster, whose mixed media creations combining light and sound could brighten the night like a colorful flower.

Favorite cities: Essaouira, Morocco, and Ubud, Bali. Both of these places are incredibly soothing.

Keep an eye on: Tanya Brno, an aerial performer with whom I plan to collaborate using my lights and her performance. I have always been interested in aerial dance because it uses textiles that hang from sky to earth. I think we share something in common by creating beauty.

Photographer Charlie Schuck has a new hobby: collecting objets d’art for his Seattle shop, Object. His latest endeavor is designing mirrors cut to the shapes of different states and countries. Opposite: A view of Schuck’s gallery, which he arranges as though he’s on the set of a photo shoot.

PORTRAIT: RACHAEL LANG. OPPOSITE: CHARLIE SCHUCK. TOP RIGHT: SIEGER BY FURSTENBERG.

Photographing one-of-a-kind objects handcrafted by local designers was a far cry from the sort of snazzy, strobe-lit photography for which Charlie Schuck is known, but the side project made quite an impact on him. “It’s extremely exciting to see people creating unique things,” says Schuck, who, in 2010, was inspired to launch a pop-up shop that

The curiosities found at Seattle’s Far4 showroom, like the Sieger by Furstenberg Sip of Gold beaker, shown below in black, appeal to Schuck’s design sensibilities.

helped expose such pieces. “The world needs new ways of doing things, and that’s a driving force behind Object.” Originally planned as a series of champagne parties, Object morphed into a full-time retail store late last year when Schuck found a space large enough to accommodate his apartment, photo studio and shop. “I’ve always kind of lived where I work, so it seemed totally natural to me,” he says. Schuck’s photography career greatly influences the gallery’s minimalist design. “I approach the retail environment almost like creating a photo set,” he explains. “Even if the objects themselves don’t appeal to you, you might find it interesting how they’re displayed.” hereisobject.com; 206.459.3876

OBJECTIVE LENS

CHARLIE SCHUCK Trend you’re excited by: People are starting to think about design more and about where and how things are being made. The more you stop to think about what you’re doing, the more you can create something original that’s informed by your actual surroundings.

What’s inspiring you now? Textiles. I’m fascinated by the Pendleton trend and the use of Native American motifs. It’s interesting to see how people are looking back in history and incorporating these old patterns in new designs.

Favorite decorating sources: Curtis Steiner, Area 51 and Far4 are incredible. Jill Wenger runs a women’s clothing store called Totokaelo; she’s a wonderful person with an amazing vision.

Words of wisdom: Look for what you want, not what others say you should like. With this in mind, seek to learn and expand your tastes. Figuring out what you like and why you like it is a core part of being alive. It’s brought me down an interesting path to where I am today—having a store full of objects. LUXE INTERIORS

TOTAL DISH MAKING EVEN THE SMALLEST ADJUSTMENTS TO A POPULAR MATERIAL CAN BE ALL YOU NEED TO GIVE IT A NEW LIFE. HERE, ADDING A BIT OF COLOR TO CONCRETE MAKES FOR A DECIDEDLY FRIENDLIER ALTERNATIVE TO THE SOMETIMES-TOOCOOL MODERN FINISH STANDBY.

CONCRETE THEORY When the American Cement Company erected its headquarters on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles in the 1960s, its mission was simple: create something distinctive. It’s a sentiment that designer David Dalton took to heart when he moved into his loft in the building after its conversion to residential units over 50 years later; but that wasn’t the only thing he borrowed from the original structure. Inspired by the location’s history and the recognizable X-cross external supports that define its façade, the designer outfitted his kitchen with cement touches. “I wanted to honor the place’s origins,” he says, citing the concrete flooring, countertops and backsplashes. “Too much concrete can be cold, but I had it colored in a dark, rich brown and that did a lot to warm things up.” The darker tones also create an interesting contrast with the bright white of the Bombo stools, and since the kitchen sits at the end of a large, open floor plan, lend gravity to the space.

“Especially in a kitchen, efficiency has to be considered every single time. First, make it work; and, then, make it look just right.”

SPA SUBLIME A SPA DAY CAN BE TRANSCENDENT, BUT IT CAN ALSO BE A BIT PROBLEMATIC. IT CAN CAUSE SOME DIFFICULT QUESTIONS TO ARISE; SUCH AS, ARE YOU HAVING ENOUGH OF THEM ? LUCKILY, INTRODUCING WARM TOUCHES INTO MINIMALIST DESIGN CAN BRING A SPA FEEL HOME TO THE EVERYDAY.

FIRST GLASS The best way to make sure a homeowner is content, sometimes, is to give him exactly what he wants. That’s just what Austin-based builder David Wilkes and designer Mark Cravotta did for a glass-loving client’s bathroom remodel. “The owner is passionate about glass tile,” says Cravotta. “He had used it in various applications throughout his house, and I wanted to honor that.” Together, Wilkes and Cravotta produced large sheets of stained glass, which they then cut into tiles of various widths and lengths before cladding the walls. “The pieces were so thin and fragile,” says Wilkes. “It was a little like handling eggshells, but it all came together beautifully.” The result is a slick, modern backdrop that borrows interest from its complex, wood-like patina and allows the other elements in the bathroom to take on an almost sculptural quality. The crisp white, curvy tub from Kohler beckons, while the benches on the perimeter encourage lounging.

“It’s about approaching the space with a sense of confidence and creating a strong personality. This bath says rich, elegant and luxurious. It makes a statement.” David Wilkes, David Wilkes Builders Austin, TX

THE DREAMLIKE HUES OF THE OREGON COAST HAVE SPECIAL POWERS TO SOOTHE THE SOUL, MAKING IT AN IDEAL GETAWAY LOCALE.

So when one couple set out to decorate

their beachfront vacation home, they called for its interiors to be just as engaging as the coastal surroundings. “They have a very close family, and they desired a place where everybody could hang out and be comfortable together,” says designer Jessica Helgerson. “It’s a big house with a lot of public spaces, and we wanted to give each one its own distinct style and feeling.” The design team, led by Helgerson and Jesse Moyer, did just that. The main living room, situated on the top floor with expansive ocean views, is now the formal sitting area. To complement the vistas, the room has been kept light and airy, with a whisper-soft palette and elegant furnishings. “We wanted people to come right in and see through the room and out to the ocean, so the furniture is thin and delicate,” says Helgerson. For example, a long, curved sofa that seems to float on slender, gently bowed legs was custom designed for the room, and is joined by graceful vintage chairs. hangs overhead, dripping hand-blown glass teardrops. “It’s amazing, especially up close, because within each drop, you can see the reflected ocean views,” Helgerson says. The homeowners chose the design firm, in part, for its eco-friendly focus. “One of the ways that manifests itself is trying not to buy new pieces,” Helgerson says. “We use a lot of vintage finds, or if we do introduce new things, we often design them ourselves and have them made locally in Portland, which gives our projects a sense of patina and put-togetherness.”

That’s certainly the case in the playful living area on the lower floor, which is a testament to the team’s talent for repurposing salvaged materials. In one sunny corner, a refurbished boat swings from the ceiling, offering a tempting spot to curl up with a book. “It’s a worn wooden boat that we found online,” Helgerson says. “It was bright orange and covered in sports stickers; we had the stickers peeled off, and we cut a notch into the side of the boat so you can climb into it. We had the existing wood rail refinished and had the rest of it painted white. Then we had a mattress made to fit inside it and added a bunch of pillows. It’s super-cozy.”

SWING LOW The designers used sisal rope to suspend a drift boat from the ceiling in the lower-level living area. L.A.-based artist Heather Levine crafted the ceramic light fixtures in the bar area, with wiring done by local GKA Lighting, above Pietro Arosio-designed chairs.

SLEEP POD Jessica Helgerson Interior Design custom designed the bed in the mid-level guest bedroom, which features George Kovacs lamps from Metro Retro Furniture in Pasadena, Texas, atop gnarled treetrunk side tables. Draperies from O Ecotextiles and Schumacher frame the view; sisal carpeting from Green Depot runs underfoot.

Steps away from the hanging vessel lies a custom-made sofa, whose rustic cladding also had a previous life. “I live on a farm on Sauvie Island that had two barns on it,” Helgerson says. “One of them was filled with old barn wood, and that’s what we used to clad the sofa.”

SCENIC OUTLOOK The terrace was furnished to reflect a beach feel without subtracting from the home’s natural surroundings. Rodolfo Dordoni’s mesh chairs for Emu, from Property in New York, surround distressed acacia wood block tables from Bo Tree Source.

For casual group gatherings, the family convenes in the mid-level living room, or library, on the second floor. “It’s fun and colorful,” Helgerson says. “We found two natural-fiber embroidered straw rugs that look like a sombrero, and the room has a games table paired with vintage chairs.” With enchanting views from nearly every room and a gently lived-in feeling afforded by a mixture of custom-made and vintage treasures, the home has become an idyllic haven for unwinding and reconnecting with family. “It’s really a pleasant place to be,” Helgerson says. “It’s comfortable and approachable—not too fancy—and everyone feels welcome here.” L LUXE INTERIORS

DESIRES

The man and wife who

had the home built wanted a place that felt modern and up-to-date but with traditional touches that tied back to the site’s earlier days. The pair previously owned a house on the property for many years, but when they decided to expand that home, mixed feelings arose about the direction they should take. They loved the Tudor style, the established feel and great layout of the existing house, but that layout didn’t take advantage of the surrounding water views. Enter architect Jim Castanes and project manager Alev Seymen, who, after confirming that a simple remodel wouldn’t accommodate the clients’ requests, had the original house torn down to build anew. “The owners loved the old floor plan,” Castanes says, “so we used it but in a contemporary language.” He called

On the ground level, they created a walk-out family room with a glass wall that stacks open, blurring the line between indoors and out. “Some folks have an infinity pool,” says the owner, “but we have an infinity home.” With the walk-out ground level, balconies on the upper levels and expansive swathes of glass, the major rooms and gardens are open to views that stretch from Mount Baker to Mount Rainier. and sensual sounds. “You can hear the architecture,” he says. Inside, the interiors demonstrate a mix of old and new through Castanes’ detailing and interior designer Nancy Burfiend’s choice of materials. There are beams, but they are sleek and painted. The kitchen is awash with stainless steel appliances and gleaming white marble, but softened with oak cabinetry and reddish floor tiles. The walls and ceilings throughout are also light, but they are balanced with warm hardwood floors. Castanes consciously created a contemporary envelope for Burfiend to fill with traditional touches. “It’s the design equivalent of a blended family,” he says.

While the architecture is in-the-now, the furniture is from-the-then. Burfiend and designer Devin Fitzpatrick worked closely with the owners to bring beloved older pieces into the new home and to buy new things that felt stylistically from another generation. Two wingback chairs in the living room, for instance, had belonged to the wife’s mother; the designers updated them with a creamy linen. Also, the owners had traveled in Europe years ago and had long regretted passing up a pair of leather club chairs in Paris. Burfiend found them a similarly entrancing set from Jean de Merry. Plus, says Burfiend, “The wife has a wonderful eye and she brought in a lot of really cool, older artifacts.” If the house is about old greeting new, the landscape is about romance meeting running water. “They love everything about water,” says landscape architect Anita Madtes, “especially its sound.” Madtes crafted a lakeside yard to conjure up European villas that use a series of terraces

STEELY RESOLVE The stair, by Curtiss Bushaw, is intended to feel like a contemporary ribbon. The steel bench, also by Bushaw, is jokingly known as the “gossip bench, as people often gather there for chats during parties. A Jimmy Gersen painting introduces color to the quiet space.

That feat of modern engineering is invisible; what you’re more likely to see is the chandelier the wife has hung from the ancient willow, and up a few steps, the covered trellis. With its old-school floor plan and new-kid-on-the-block windows and materials, this home on the water blends the best of old and new while giving the owners a soundtrack they love as much as the home itself. “Inside or out, we are where we want to be,” the husband says, “within earshot of water.” L

NESTLED BETWEEN THE ADVENTUROUS OUTDOORS AND BELLEVUE’S URBAN DOWNTOWN LIES THE QUIETLY POSH SUBURB OF MEDINA, WHERE DESIGNER STEVEN HENSEL TRANSFORMED A FRENCH-INFLUENCED RESIDENCE INTO A CASUAL, TRANSITIONAL STUNNER.

Prior to deciding that this would be the place where she would plant her roots and raise her children, homeowner Renée Harbers embarked on an extensive house-hunting excursion that spanned most of the West Coast. The long journey concluded in Medina, where Harbers came upon her dream home—complete with her desired layout, a handsome pool, and a coveted neighborhood located on a prestigious golf course. But she still had one last hurdle: The fussy French interiors didn’t reflect her family. “The home had all the features for which we’d been searching, but the décor simply wasn’t our taste,” she says. “I knew I needed to find a designer who understood my lifestyle.” INTERIOR DESIGN Steven Hensel, Hensel Design Studios ARCHITECTURE Curtis Gelotte, AIA, Gelotte Hommas Architecture HOME BUILDER Craig Halterman and Jonathan Fast,

Harbers found her ideal match when she was introduced to Hensel after word spread of a nearby project that the designer had recently completed. The two immediately clicked, and after seeing the home, Hensel calculated his course of action. “Upon entry, I was instantly inspired by the home’s intricate detailing and grandeur,” says Hensel. But he also wanted to soften the formality. “By introducing clean, contemporary lines that contrast with the more ornate nature of the house, we achieved an approachable complexion that matched Renee’s expressed desires,” he says.

SOFT SHELL The owner’s barstools were upholstered using a man-made material by Izit Leather. Their dark frames and the island wood contrast with the creamy hue of the kitchen cabinetry.

RISE AND SHINE Anchored by a well-rounded table and rattan McGuire chairs, the informal breakfast nook is a perfect addition to the open floor plan— complete with a contemporary Kevin Reilly fixture for Holly Hunt, purchased through Jennifer West, and understated Fabricut draperies that open to lush outdoor foliage.

Case in point: To give depth to a small formal living room and scale down its hearty hearth, the designer mirrored the north wall and

painted the fireplace to blend with the room’s neutral shell. “This was one of the project’s most exciting challenges for me because the end result was especially transformative,” says Hensel, who customized a Barbara Barry-designed rug with a calligraphic pattern for the room. “The fact that it became the focal point in the space that all other elements referenced was fantastic.” Hensel designed the custom coffee table that echoes the rug pattern’s loose, organic shape. “The calligraphy feel manifests a formality while the application has a natural, organic whimsy that appeals back to the owner’s more casual sensibilities,” he says. FAMILY PLAN The heart of the home beats in the open family area, where luxury and durability meet. McGuire’s St. Germain lounge chairs from Stephen E. Earls Showroom and a sofa wearing Glant chenille were carefully positioned upon a custom hand-knotted Tibetan rug edged by Donghia floor lamps.

formal in design, there remains an underlying casual elegance as rich fabrics collide with light, bright paint colors and accessories. A deliberate color thread runs throughout the rest of the home, weaving a tapestry of buttery tones through the regal but welcoming dining room near the entry, as well as the inviting kitchen and breakfast area that open onto the family room. The creamy hues are complemented by cool, soothing counterparts; this can particularly be seen in the bedroom. “Bedrooms need to be tranquil to promote restfulness,” states Hensel, “and artwork is often such an important key element when evoking that feeling.” Featured in the bedroom is a painting that Hensel commissioned from local artist Jared Rue, whose piece exudes an ethereal notion that supports the calming interiors and balances the carefully selected color tones.

FALSE IMPRESSION Hensel layered Coraggio Textiles sheers and Pindler & Pindler fabric to create the illusion that a large picture window hides beneath. Pillows in Jim Thompson fabric shimmer on the bed, and a Mattaliano table from Terris Draheim adds a delicate touch. Morrison Lighting sconces illuminate the space.

“Though it is a traditional-style home, it was built for modern times,” explains Hensel when describing the workable floor plan of the house that became a home. “This residence places the emphasis on its family spaces, where the majority of time is spent.” And although the home consists of durable fabrics that will stand up to the rigors of children and entertaining, they also possess, Hensel says, “a beautiful hand and an element of luxury that didn’t need to be sacrificed.” L

P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y PAUL SUNDBERG

MATTHEW BERGMAN’S RESIDENCE ON VASHON ISLAND IN PUGET SOUND NEEDED TO BE MANY THINGS AT ONCE.

Although creating a comfortable family home was paramount, the residence would also require room for the owner to host charitable and political fundraisers. Given the home’s hilltop site, with views over the treetops to the water and Mount Rainier, the design demanded enough glass to properly unveil the postcard vista. Yet Bergman also has an extensive art collection that includes rare works sensitive to light. Architect Rick Sundberg’s design provides for all these functional needs, but its collection of spaces rises to something far greater than the sum of its parts. “We spent a lot of time looking at the location and established a structural design that fit and was grounded into the site,” Bergman recalls. The house, a kind of accordion shape festooned in wood with tall glass walls, is purposely oriented toward Rainier. “On a clear day it should feel as if the mountain is sitting on the window bank right in front of you,” the architect says. But as one enters the house, the view unveils itself gradually. “Visitors are kind of led through a sequence before they get the full view. When people go into a building, I think they should be tickled with a little bit of surprise, a little bit of joy,” says Sundberg, who collaborated with Gladys Ly-Au Young to complete the design of the residence.

HANG TOUGH The living room’s fireplace mantel, made from an uncut concrete slab, extends from the wall as if floating. Despite its effortless appearance, the unseen structural frame is so large that it had to be brought in with a forklift. Architect Rick Sundberg designed the coffee table.

PRECIOUS CARGO Though natural light and views were paramount to the design of this Vashon Island home, the windows from Seattle Glass are equipped with shades to protect the owner’s art collection, which includes paintings by midcentury masters, and Egyptian and Roman antiques.

STYLE SELECTION Michael Wisner’s handcrafted pottery piece uses incised clay and was inspired by the artist’s friendship with late furniture designer Sam Maloof. White Dovetail pottery, $750; michaelwisnerpottery.com

To start the sequence of spaces, the entry becomes a room unto itself, wrapping visitors in cedar siding and featuring an oversize asymmetrical pivoting door. “You feel like you’re opening a castle door,” says project manager Doug Shay, who helmed the home’s construction with builder Terry Miller. Installing the door, he recalls, took a small team of people. Sundberg’s design divides the home into private and public spaces. This allows Bergman to host sizable gatherings in the living and dining areas, against a backdrop of Northwest abstract paintings and classical sculptures, while keeping the bedrooms tranquil. “It’s a great place to host parties but also to curl up and listen to music, and read and sip Scotch in the evening,” the owner says.

CHARITY DINNER The dining table, designed by Sundberg and fabricated by Steve Clark, anchors a set of A. Rudin chairs from Trammell-Gagné that provide seating for the owner’s fundraisers and family dinners. Kenneth Callahan’s painting adds a dominant splash of red.

The dining room is anchored—literally—by a long wood table that seats up to 14 and is built into the poured-in-place concrete floor. Dividing this area from the living room is a block-shaped space paneled in bronze; the section, which holds a small bar, powder room and guest closet, has walls that extend only halfway to the high wood ceilings, thus resembling a cube floating within the larger volume. The roof slants upward at the back to bring in an abundance of natural light from its floor-to-ceiling glass. The wood glulams forming the ceiling extend outward beyond the glass, also emphasizing the inside-out

connections, an evocation of classic Northwest modern style. “I think the symbiotic relationship between interior and exterior is what I love most about the place and what I think Rick’s greatest contribution was,” the homeowner adds. “In the summer, we open up the huge sliding doors in the living room and family room. It’s just such a comfortable house to live in, and it works so well.” Despite the size of the home, its architecture and landscape design (particularly a series of descending grass terraces) work in harmony to emphasize its blending into the hillside. “There’s a lot of lawn, but that site really lends itself to those strong lines,” says Suzanne Hattery, a horticulturist who worked with Sundberg on the landscape design and plant selection. “It also connects those strong horizontal lines with the sweeping views of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier. It’s pretty spectacular.” L

TA K E R O OT The home’s lines are softened by a blend of maple, birch and cherry trees, as well as ferns, rosemary and Japanese snowbells. Horticulturist Suzanne Hattery used native flora and plant material with interesting color, texture and seasonal change; they pop against the siding from LS Cedar.

LIGHT HOUSE To wash the house with ample sunshine, Sundberg’s design includes not only numerous skylights but also a kind of interior clerestory light in the wood stairway wall by Interior Environments—all watched over by the owner’s collection of masks.

A glazed-ceramic planter from Janus et Cie nods to Mother Nature with its undulating shape. Mizu, priced from $78; janusetcie.com

boasts 12,000 square feet of land that Durie turned into a vast outdoor space that encompasses a multitude of areas marked for living, sleeping, dining and even bathing. “I created a garden that converts every room of the house into its individual outdoor equivalent,” says Durie, who was inspired by the landscape of Roberto Burle Marx, the architecture of Luis Barragán and a passion for the environment. One of his most ingenious features of the project is a pair of moveable living walls—a concept that had been in his head for over seven years. A striking array of tropical and sub-tropical flowering perennials and succulents adorn the panels, which pivot on tracks to completely open up the master bedroom to the outdoors. “I sketched this element for a book I authored about six years ago and have been waiting for the right client to bring it to life,” he says. “Lucky me!” jamieduriedesign.com

“The perfect outdoor room should include level changes, a lush, secret garden, complete exclusivity and privacy, functional space and a touch of the unexpected.” “Study the choices you made inside your house and try to replicate them outside. Then the space becomes personal and a reflection of your style.” “Never give the garden away at one glance. Change levels to create drama and compartmentalize spaces so that they can perform individual functions.” “Take the curtains off your house and put them on boundary walls in the form of living, breathing plants. This means the garden and the house become one.” “I created an iPhone app that may just put me out of business. We don’t just recommend the plants that are perfect for your location, we give away our design philosophy.”

TOP MODEL A long stone table that designer Peter Dunham found at J.F. Chen anchors the new dining space, placed under the existing pergola. Dunham custom designed the wrought-iron chairs after a French model that he had seen and added cushions covered in outdoor fabric from Perennials. Bronze lanterns and a brick fireplace and flooring impart a classic style.

OUTDOOR CHIC When Los Angeles designer Peter Dunham begins a project, he looks to the existing architecture of the space to find a way of joining past and present and create his trademark look—soulful and layered, eclectic yet timeless. For a client living in this Georgian-style home in Beverly Hills, California, Dunham did just that, fashioning a refined yet relaxed environment gauged on the home’s original qualities. “It’s a spectacular

1920s Paul Williams house with all the original detail and great windows that open onto expansive gardens,” he says. “And so, I wanted to use as light a touch as possible.” With this in mind, Dunham decided to turn an existing exterior space with a pergola structure and brick fireplace, designed 10 years ago by architect Marc Appleton, into a stylish outdoor dining area with custom furnishings and durable fabrics. “For me, an outdoor space is very similar to an indoor one,” Dunham says. “You just happen to be using different elements to make it work, whether it’s situating a dining area under the shade of a tree, or using a fireplace or other built-in structure in order to ground a seating area.” peterdunham.com

Crafted from mahogany, this planter complements a variety of outdoor spaces. Expressions planter, price available to the trade; weatherend.com

“Make outdoor areas seem permanent; some elements need to be built-in to avoid a sense of haphazardness. And avoid putting them too far from the main house. Otherwise, they get ignored.” “Working outdoors, homeowners need to take a lot more of the site’s elements into consideration—rock formations, trees, natural walls, even the view—in order to make the most of it.” “Create outdoor areas that are super-comfortable—think naps, reading and endless afternoons. Water elements should almost always have a role; they create music and a sense of freshness.” “Think about maximizing the area’s exposure to sunlight for warmth, as well as creating your own shaded spots. Always balance a feeling of openness with a sense of comfort and shelter.” “Avoid glaring light sources yet create as much impact as possible with an emphasis on trees and landscape. You need very little light outside, so it should be placed judiciously.”

INNER GLOW Due to the concrete construction methods used on the project, designer Nathan Orsman incorporated surfacemounted lighting for the home’s outdoor pavilion. He also selected fixtures that house the bulbs a little deeper to reduce glare and added hex cell louvers to give it a more polished look. Wall sconces accent the columns in an up-and-down format and reflect in the pool.

FORMULA ONE For New York-based lighting designer Nathan Orsman, there is no “formula” when creating a lighting plan. “Every space is different, particularly landscapes,” he says. “I try to understand the space’s function and what its demands are. Once I know that purpose, I can then begin determining the optimal locations for light sources and specifying which fixtures would be best suited for the desired effect.” Blending the lighting with the home’s impressive architecture and open floor plan was Orsman’s primary intent for this beautiful beachfront residence in the Dominican Republic’s Casa

de Campo, designed by renowned Mexican architect Manolo Mestre. “The home has such a spectacular layout and I wanted to make sure that it was highlighted, so we created exterior focal points that could be seen from multiple rooms,” Orsman says. “We also wanted to bring special attention to the architectural details, such as the angled walls and stairs, so I specified custom fixtures to highlight the nuances. All of the fixtures are adjustable, and so we focused them onto specific elements, thoroughfares and décor. Sufficient lighting allows for large-scale entertaining and dining both inside and out.” orsmandesign.com “I always make sure the lighting complements the design rather than it being intrusive. Regardless of the location, lighting should be cohesive and seamless and never appear as an afterthought.”

Designer Paula Hayes creates terrariums from hand-blown glass and plantings. T042, price available upon request; paulahayes.com

“Less is more! Too often, people feel the need to light every tree and shrub on the property. Pick the details you like best and focus on those first.” “Landscapes change as they grow and general day-to-day wear alters the design further. Even the most carefully planned exterior lighting layout will need some future adjustment to maintain the overall effect.” “Educate yourself on beam spreads. Not everything needs to be lit up by a floodlight—play around with different spreads to get the effect you desire.” “As we move toward more efficient lighting, be sure to familiarize yourself with color temperatures and know that not all LEDs are created equal.”
