celebrations. I always relish the cooler days and evenings of an approaching fall. With heavy rains and recordsetting heat this summer, I think everyone is looking forward to picture perfect autumn hillsides dappled with shades of gold, red and green. Fall in our mountain villages provides a fabulous reminder of the good a more nature-centered day or two can do for the soul. We had a busy summer with fantastic events, from the Art of Luxe Living party at the Aspen Art Museum to a wonderful sponsorship of the Denver Designer Show House where over $71,000 was raised for the Children’s Hospital Colorado. Another highlight was our involvement with AIA Colorado, where I had the privilege to view and help judge some of Colorado’s most exciting architectural projects. Congratulations to all of the winners! Celebrating beautiful work—both in nature, and architecture and design—is a thrill. I hope you take in both the natural and man-made architectural wonders across our lovely state.

THE ITALIAN L’Hostaria restaurant in Aspen has a wonderful menu and is decorated in a hip Italian style. Sit at the high bar tables and check out the bar menu, which is full of unique delicacies. Tiziano Gortan, the owner and chef, is a gracious host and makes everyone feel welcome. This is a great local spot for après ski or to catch up with friends. BEAR TRACKS I love the sharp lines and glittering glass of the Colorado Convention Center, and I think it’s most marvelous when reflecting a pink and blue sunset. The biggest draw for me, however, is the adorable creature peeking through the windows at the visitors. MODERN MARVEL HL23, the new landmark building by acclaimed Los Angeles architect Neil Denari, welcomed its first residents this past summer in Manhattan's reinvigorated West Chelsea neighborhood. The 14-story structure houses 11 full-floor residences—including two duplexes—with sweeping views of the High Line park, thanks to floor-to-ceiling, low-iron windows. The sleek exterior is a perfect fit for the modern, clean interiors by Danish designer Thomas Juul-Hansen. Adding to the narrative of the building, HL23 collaborated with April Magen, of Magen H. Tony Duquette’s sunburst fixtures cast a twinkling glow on gray hues and silver metallic walls at the recently opened 2,200-square-foot private event space adjacent to Chicago’s Michelin star-rated Sepia. Gary Lee Partners, who designed the restaurant, was tasked with creating a sophisticated complement to the eatery’s sexy-cool interiors. Luxe sat down with longtime p.e. guerin fixture martin grubman for an intimate look at the history, philosophy and artistry behind the brand, started by master craftsman pierre emmanuel guerin when he left France for new york city in 1857, a cache of tiny chisels and hammers in hand. over 150 years later, p.e. guerin still stands in a four-story building on jane street whose simple façade belies the exquisite custom fixtures and hardware the company creates for clients around the world. the process remains much as it was when guerin himself first established his shop, and a visit to the foundry—the only one in existence in new york city—is akin to a trip back in time.

HOW DO YOU PRESERVE THE gUERin HERiTAgE? it’s a family business, and always has been. guerin’s great grandnephew, andrew ward, runs the company, and we maintain a staff of about 60. many come to us as apprentices. the process is the same as when guerin was creating his own pieces. we still use his original tools—some are even older than the company—and when one breaks, we repair or recreate it ourselves. it’s not like we can go to the hardware store and replace it. the molds are handmade using patterns from our archive; we have an entire room full of them, stacked in boxes and on shelves from floor to ceiling. there are probably 100,000 different designs.
WAlk US THROUgH THE AcTUAl PROcESS. every piece in the shop is created, start-to-finish, by hand. we cast exclusively in sand—we go through about six tons a year—and each mold can only be used once. an impression is made in the sand using a pattern, or an actual model, and the metal is poured into the sand. that produces a raw casting, which gets hand filed and braised before going to a finish filer who smooths and refines it. after that it goes to a chaser, or chiseler, who uses chisels and hammers to re-delineate the design. the piece is polished and sent back to the chaser for more detail and texture—that’s what gives it its life-like nature—before it’s polished again, plated and patinated.
HOW MUcH cUSTOM WORk iS DOnE? a lot. one time someone came in and said, “i love hippos. can you make me a hippo faucet?” and i said, “sure!” someone else came in and said, “can you make me an elephant doorknob?” it happens all the time and no matter the request, we find a way to do it. every goofy thing you’ve ever heard of, we’ve made it. we collaborate with designers, architects and historians. guerin’s original work can still be seen in the hall of records and the villard houses in new york city, and in many historically significant buildings across the country. more current work can be found in the new york city public library—that was a restoration commission—tom Ford’s store on madison avenue and in museums.
DiScUSS YOUR cOMMiTMEnT TO cRAFT. there’s a character inherent in metal that can only be achieved by hand. you cannot accomplish it through other means. i analogize it this way: a machine-made sweater is perfect and looks just like all the other machine-made sweaters. but a handmade sweater—while not perfect—has a quality that draws you to it. it’s the same with metalwork. a hand-chased fixture possesses detail and personality and breaks up the light in a way that’s incredibly appealing. you just want to touch it. it’s a tactile aspect you get from something created by hand that you just don’t get when it’s made by a machine.

Beetlekill Blues founder Charise Buckley has a way of being in the right place at the right time. More importantly, she recognizes the opportunities presented to her. “When I couldn’t find the furniture I wanted I began

to create it myself,” says Buckley, who has long practiced design through her Breckenridge and Irvine, California-based interiors firm Full Circle Design Group. Her commitment to sustainability—which can be traced to her grandmother’s love of nature—has fostered an intense interest in designing furniture using woods harvested from fallen or affected trees; most recently, beetlekill pine. Recognizing that the wood’s distinctive blue streaks don’t appeal to everybody, Buckley offers a variety of finishes. “I’m trying to use the wood anywhere it makes sense,” says the designer, who plans to take an active role in reforestation. It’s an approach intended to save more than trees. “I really want to preserve the craft of furniture making,” Buckley says, “to support local craftspeople so that the tradition continues.” beetlekillblues.com; 970.453.7100

CHARISE BUCKLEY I became interested in sustainability when… I moved to Colorado and my connection to the forest grew even stronger. Over the years, I’ve experienced the impact that tourism and development have had on our tiny little mountain town. It’s made me all the more intent upon preserving the beauty of our natural surroundings.
My work is… Organic modern. I love the juxtaposition of natural shapes and materials with clean textures and finishes, and every room should have a little bit of sparkle.
Design icons/muse: I respect the design and business sense of Clodagh and Kelly Hoppen. In furniture design, I admire Ted Boerner. But Eva Zeisel is my hero, as she’s still designing past her 90th birthday.
Greatest influences: The National Parks, the Redwood forest, the four acres of land on which I live and my favorite book by Dr. Seuss, The Lorax.

If you want good Italian food, you can find a trattoria in most any metropolis in America. But a frasca? Now that’s something you don’t see every day. So when Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson and Bobby Stuckey opened their own in Boulder seven years ago—Frasca Food and Wine—its uncommonness was part of its allure. “Frascas are warm, informal gathering places that serve local farm cuisine in Italy’s not-so-touristy Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where cooking styles are diverse,” says Mackinnon-Patterson, Frasca’s award-

winning chef. “It’s also a world-class wine region,” adds Stuckey, who, as Frasca’s master sommelier, chooses every bottle on its well-edited list. Before opening Frasca, the friends honed their skills together at Thomas Keller’s famed French Laundry in California’s Napa Valley. Now tastemakers in their own right, the two make regular treks to Friuli and have expanded their influence at home by launching their own wine label, Scarpetta, and opening new spaces—Pizzeria Locale and Frasca Caffé. “It’s great to now have three ways to experience the food traditions we offer,” says Mackinnon-Patterson. graduate school at Colorado State University, where she installed 27 miles of the material in a relatively small gallery space. “I had 10 people working with me around the clock for three weeks,” she says. “We covered the walls with fishing line and created three floor-to-ceiling freestanding pieces.” According to the Crestone-based artist, her creations are interactive and can only be seen in their entirety in person. “The work continually shifts and changes with the movement of the sun, as well as the movement of the viewer around it,” she says. To date, her Forming Light installations have been temporary, but Dillo would welcome the chance to create in a permanent setting. “I love the transience of how natural light affects the work,” she says, “but in the future, I would like to have total control over everything.” sophiadillo.com; 415.302.7659

SOPHIA DIxOn DILLO Recent project: An installation at the Ice Cube Gallery in Denver, where I used about 20 miles of monofilament strung 1/8-inch apart to create sheer walls. I’m reading… Seeing is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees: Over Thirty Years of Conversations with Robert Irwin, by Lawrence Weschler.
Favorite city: San Francisco. It’s a city, but it doesn’t isolate you within its walls like other cities might. It feels very open because it’s formed by the natural surroundings of the bay and the ocean and the hills.
Art period you find most engaging: During and around the Abstract Expressionist movement, when artists like Mark Rothko were aiming at communicating their internal experience. They were trying to express a felt sense, the direct experience before naming and thinking start to interfere with immediacy. luxe interiors

WHOLE GRAINS It’s sometimes easy to get lost in the sleek, minimalist lines of contemporary design; there’s something inherently soothing and appealing about a blank, uninterrupted surface. The drawback, however, is that there’s a very thin line between clean and sterile, and the team at Ornare had to tread it carefully. So, they paired the super modern cabinetry of their new Satyrium series with reclaimed wood on the walls and table and carefully sourced antique light pendants from Brazil to bring a warm, lived-in feel to this contemporary-meets-organic kitchen. “The idea was to give the space a real human element,” says Claudio Faria, director of Ornare Miami. “All of the natural woods make the straight, sharp shapes of the cabinetry more comfortable and homey.” A custom-made range hood and plenty of wine storage courtesy of GE Monogram coolers work to introduce a bit of stainless steel to the otherwise matte finishes used throughout, while illuminated shelves pop against their wooden backdrop for an unexpected touch.

CLEAN WASH Nature calls—literally—in this bathroom by Dion McCarthy, Mark Kirkhart and Andrew Alper, of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara-based DesignARC. Pocketing glass doors slide away to create a seamless transition between indoors and out, offering a stunning view of the reservoir in the distance from the cozy contours of the Agape bathtub. “Absolutely every part of the room has a view of and a strong relationship to the outdoors,” says McCarthy. “We let the site dictate the texture and color palette, which brings a nice organic quality to the space.” It’s a quality that is carried through to the knotty wood bench and chair and the interesting metallic-inspired finish of the glazed, porcelain shower tiles by Tau Ceramica from Stone Source. While the bathroom is purposely spare to keep the focus on the unique materials and panoramic vistas, the designer is careful to point out how much the space accomplishes with its less-is-more credo. “It’s not the kind of minimalism you see in a museum,” says McCarthy. “There’s an effortless accessibility to it that speaks unabashedly to and about the human body.”

MONTCLAIR VICTORIAN This 1888 three-story brick “Painted Lady,” endured multiple fires and major renovations that began as early as the 1930s. The homeowners sought a historic rehabilitation and modernization to meet the needs of a contemporary lifestyle.

A historic photo of the home was discovered in a book by Dr. Thomas J. Noel. The tiny thumbnail was meticulously examined for the forms and details that drove the exterior rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. The original rooflines were reconstructed, stained glass windows and the original basement flagstone slab floors were carefully refurbished, interior restoration and new assemblies were driven by existing details and exterior bricks and Manitou sandstone sills were salvaged and reused. The architects included high-efficiency upgrades to existing systems and sustainable building materials were used whenever possible.

The home, designed as a place for the family and their friends to experience the serenity of Crestone, respects the qualities that the land inherently offers. Because the site is at the cusp of two massive forces—the mountains and the valley—the designers felt it was imperative to recognize and uphold the character of this majestic site. The low-profile design of the home honors the desert life and subtleties of the earth’s contours, while using materials and systems that minimize the environmental impact. The house has a low profile to avoid being a visual disruption above the treetops. The front door, not immediately visible, causes approaching visitors to observe and experience the whole. There is an openness to the outdoors and long expansive views, in addition to smaller apertures in northern walls that frame views one might have otherwise missed.
CHINOOK HOUSE The house was sited above an ancient sea, which became the plains of Boulder County and beyond. Tectonic plate activity thrust the Rocky Mountains steeply above the remnants of this ancient sea. The house would sit precisely at the interface between these two geologic artifacts, several hundred feet above the plains, nestled at the foot of the mountains. The client, a long-time sailor, often feels land-locked in Colorado. The architects suggested the metaphor of the house as a ship, floating upon the hillside, overlooking the ancient sea. They developed an architectural language that drew upon the precision of ship detailing and responded to the surrounding geological forms. Floating on piers drilled and poured into the bedrock, the house rises from a sculptural stone plinth that wraps the structure, echoing the landscape, while a wing-shaped roof moderates the force of the wind.

DUPONT KITCHEN REMODEL This remodel was a transformative experience for the home and its users. The kitchen was outdated, natural light was minimal, and the flow between dining, entry and living space was non-existent. The homeowner desired an open-plan, high-functioning kitchen that complemented the home’s contemporary aesthetic. The architects rotated the existing kitchen layout 90 degrees to complement an existing east-west axis, now affording the inhabitants extensive views through south windows, views into a vibrant garden and the Boulder Flatirons, and incorporating a previously defunct, lonely sitting room.

Overall, cleaner lines were incorporated throughout—a design intention which helped complete the visual and physical flow from kitchen to living to entry. A talented local craftsman designed an innovative custom wood countertop and light colored cabinetry now matches existing wood floors.

K+K POOLHOUSE

The clients purchased a half-lot to the north of their existing house with the goal to construct a lap pool and exercise pavilion on the site. The main house, a two-story, Mediterranean-style home, was built in 1918, by Jacques Benedict and is a historic landmark. Instead of trying to mimic or outdo this style, the design team and the homeowners decided to go in a very different, yet respectful, direction with the design of this structure. The new building is open, elegant, welcoming and almost completely sheathed in glass. It is a contemporary structure, which is subordinate to the main house, yet it has its own distinctive character. The project was successful because the homeowners use the exercise room every day and the pool has remained functional throughout the winter months making its functionality matched by its beauty.

This project was the design of a speculative duplex on a standard urban lot. A primary challenge was determining how to make a long, narrow area feel spacious. Public spaces were arranged in an open plan with direct access to the exterior’s “rooms.” Stairs and closets are held tight to the party wall to open up the space, while built-in millwork elements diminish the need for excess furniture. With LEED certification in mind, many of the materials and systems incorporate sustainably harvested or recycled materials. High-efficiency furnaces and air conditioning units are offset by the use of a photovoltaic array on each unit’s garage. Insulation exceeds current building code standards and the abundance of windows reduces the need for artificial lighting.

Nove 2 is a direct response in form to its small trapezoidal lot, which sat vacant for years given its many site restraints and complexities. It is bound on two sides by streets with snow storage easements and was bisected by the city’s main water line, which required relocation and more than a year of public debate. In addition, it is located in a historic district and survived lengthy zoning and historic approvals. The resulting solution is a stone “wedge,” which hints to the owners’ art collection housed primarily within its double-height space. This vaulted space not only houses art, but is central to the plan and is the public loci of the house. The interplay of natural light within the 20-foot volume changes personality as the day unfolds. The site is adjacent to the Aspen Institute originally designed by Herbert Bayer and this house respects Aspen’s “modernist” history.

had its moment, as have Tuscan and Swiss Chalet. In Telluride, a local idea called Mining Vernacular has proven popular. Perhaps the new look should be titled “Blended Blur,” since “this house blurs the edges between indoors and out,” says architect Jodie Shike Wright, principal at One Architects.

At first glance it seems to do so in the obvious ways; glass walls, expansive decks and sliding doors. Look a little closer. Notice that the rooms themselves are raised or lowered to respond to the ground they occupy, that the kitchen and master bedroom have screened porches to provide bug-free transition zones and that windows are thoughtfully located to connect the folks inside the house with the wonderment outside: Ajax Mountain and Colorado’s dramatic San Sophia Ridge.

“Instead of finding the view, the view finds you,” says architect Bruce Lyle Wright, also a principal at One Architects. He means that instead of designing too-tall glass walls, smaller openings were placed up high that frame specific, tightly focused vistas up as well as out. “We blended the vertical and the horizontal elements of the views,” Bruce says. Neither of the Wrights is genuinely proposing a new style, but they are aware that they have created something fresh. And while the cluster of slope-roofed shapes are derived from the couple’s study of local ranch and mining structures, the landscape designer brought a purely contemporary feel with geometric shapes and simple steps. “The human contribution to the landscape is a revelation of the grade changes,”

says landscape designer Kristin Undhjem, of Telluride’s KSLAcorp. But the bottom-line inspiration for all the pitched—called shed—roofs is purely weather related; the area sees 300 inches of snow every year. “We constructed it during winter,” says Pete deLuca, owner of the Telluride-based company that executed construction for the home. “And it was the coldest, wettest, most miserable site I’ve ever worked on.” He couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to live there, he says, until the sun came out in March and melted all the snow. “Right on the San Miguel River and surrounded by the San Juan Mountains is exactly where you want to be if you dream of living in Colorado,” he says. DeLuca and his supervisor Steve Sherman, who crafted steel furniture for both the entry and living room, were acutely aware that Jodie and Bruce were blending and blurring. “Study the entryway,” deLuca says. “That one room tells the whole story.” Indeed, the visible steel outside has been carried indoors. The front door itself is made of steel. Even the ceiling in the public spaces is beetlekill pine, wire-brushed to enhance its grain. It’s a clear link to, well, the forest of pine trees that cover Colorado. For other interior finishes, Jodie stuck with what nature provides: walnut cabinetry and doors, leather or bamboo floors, and stone countertops. “The design team created a warm color palette with hints of cinnamon,” she says.

Since the architecture and interior finishes are meant to meet nature’s grandest scale, the furniture has to step up, as well. “It needs to hold its own in those large spaces,” says Portland, Oregon-based designer Jackie

Bingham. “And no fluffy curtains on those big windows.” The owners— highly organized working professionals—like clean, contemporary lines and Asian accents. Bingham opted for up-sized, often custom-made, pieces that have simple shapes but cozy up the rooms with soft fabrics and textures, and chandeliers custom designed to visually connect the seating below with the drama above. “The owners like dramatic contemporary architecture, but in the final analysis this home also had to be cozy and comfortable,” Bingham says. when a couple living in denver’s tree-lined cherry creek neighborhood decided to move downtown, they were excited about being in the midst of the city’s energy and life force.
Their new home—a
spacious two-story condo at the Four Seasons Private Residences Denver—would put them in the center of the action. Perched high above the city, the condo affords views of both the Denver skyline and the Rocky Mountains. Still, making a major lifestyle change is always a leap of faith. So they recruited Rikke Jorgensen and Kerri Burcham, of local design firm Styleworks, to help them make their new condo feel like home. “They’re a pretty cool, down-to-earth couple, and they’re always out and about,” Jorgensen says. “But they were going from a more traditional home,

where you have a garden and outdoor areas to move around, to a condo with terraces, so it was a completely different approach. They were a little nervous about how that was all going to shake out.” The couple are partners in every sense. He has a business in the oil industry—she manages corporate philanthropy—and they also have a nonprofit, which she helms. And while their design preferences differ—her style is more traditional, while his leans toward contemporary—Jorgensen and Burcham were confident they could create a home that would artfully blend the two. “The two of them really work well together, and they’re very understanding of each other’s needs,” Jorgensen says. “The husband travels quite a bit, and he knew that she would be home more than he was, so it was important to him that she felt comfortable. He was mostly concerned about adding some color.” They also spend time with family and friends, and wanted a space that would be welcoming.

The airy condo comprises a sprawling living space, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms on the lower floor and, on the upper floor, an office, open loft area, powder room and wine cellar. Golden-based Confluence Builders, owned by Tim Walsh, managed the construction for the Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences Denver, providing a sleek shell for the owners to make their own. Jorgensen and Burcham worked with the couple to create a look that was classic, elegant and sophisticated—but not intimidating—and that incorporated their two aesthetics. The furnishings range from pieces with clean, modern lines for him, to upholstered pieces with gentle curves and other traditional hallmarks like tufting for her. New furnishings mix with favorites from the couple’s previous home, running the gamut from high-end custom pieces like the dining room table to reupholstered furniture finds. He got his shots of color in the form of steel blue walls here, cobalt glasswork there and other elements throughout the space.

“It really started coming together once we added their artwork,” Jorgensen says. “They’ve lived around the world—primarily in Europe— and they’ve collected lots of art and artifacts over the years. They have pieces from different parts of the world, along with recent acquisitions by local artists, and their collection really represents how they’ve evolved as they’ve traveled through time.” The homeowners decided to take the secondary master bedroom, with unrestricted mountain views, as their own. Now that the couple has moved in, they love being in the thick of it all. “The building is located right downtown, so they walk everywhere,” Jorgensen says. “They walk to work, they walk to their gym, they walk to dinner, they walk to games.” And they’ve wholeheartedly embraced the transition to condo living. “The home has their unique stamp, and it really reflects who they are,” Jorgensen says. “The more walk-throughs we did, the more she felt, ‘Yeah, I could live here.’” L

f o r da v i d h i n t g e n , d e s i g n i n g t h e i n t e r i o r s o f a mediterranean-style chateau in denver’s prestigious hilltop neighborhood, just east of cherry creek, came with a distinct advantage: the architectural integrity of the existing home.
It was influenced by the circa
1930s designs of Colorado architect James Roger Musick, who studied at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York City. “The house was already off to a good start structurally,” says Hintgen. “It was like a blank canvas. We got to come in and add finishing touches.” Hintgen began the project while co-owner of Aera Studios, his former business venture with John Moinzad, and now heads up his own Denver-based design firm, DH Interiors.

A distinct challenge came from the owner, a life-long Denverite with very contemporary tastes. “When I first saw this house, I thought it was too traditional for me and decided to build new instead,” she explains. When that plan fell through, she circled back to the house, connected with Hintgen and embarked on a nearly yearlong renovation project. “David understands how to mix traditional with modern,” she adds. “He got what I had in mind.” Little by little, the main living spaces were refreshed with a light paint palette, and heavy draperies were replaced with lighter fabrics and sheers. Modern crystal and bronze hardware added contemporary accents to windows and doors. Fireplaces were retrofitted with new

gourmet glam The home’s original kitchen was updated with new paint, contemporary cabinet hardware, Visual Comfort pendants and Lee Industries barstools covered in a Robert Allen vinyl.
inserts and custom cast mantels, and new display shelves and cabinets were designed. A grand, wrought-iron central stairway was updated with flat gunmetal paint and a signature drum-shade chandelier. Special attention was paid to creating ambient lighting systems. “Lighting is an aspect of design I particularly enjoy,” Hintgen says. “We took a little extra time and consulted with the contractor about spots, dimmers, ceiling cans, light bulbs and other elements.” Cindy Lizarraga and Mark Teets, co-owners of Centennial’s Carter Customs, the construction firm that executed the renovations, were happy to oblige.

Throughout, Hintgen set contemporary furniture against the more traditional backdrop of the generously sized rooms that added texture and scale. In the entry, a console was flanked with a pair of Bolier chairs and topped by a mirror with a beveled frame. The living room features a lofty sofa paired with a silk rug and an armchair—the only piece that had previously belonged to the owner—reupholstered with zebra skin. In the dining room, a custom table is surrounded by over-scaled chairs and lit by a Schonbek fixture trimmed with Swarovski crystals. “The owner is not a traditional chandelier kind of lady,” Hintgen says. “Plus, the contemporary geometric shapes and angles of the furniture and lighting work so well together.” Next to knocking out an adjoining wall in order to turn an extra bedroom into a 900-square-foot closet for the upstairs master suite, the most extensive work on the home was the build-out of the 2,000-square-foot unfinished basement. architect Patrick Cashen, the team created spaces including a family room for the owner’s grandkids, a full nanny’s quarters/guest suite, a gym, a utility room and storage areas. Finishes and details were concurrent with those of the rest of the house. Overall, the end result is a unique blend of styles that appear both serene and functional. “It’s a very clean, open look with accent pieces and fabrics that bring it all together,” the owner says. And that’s just the look Hintgen was going for. “The traditional, Chateau-style elements and modern furniture all mix together and balance off one another,” he says. “Out of my entire portfolio, it’s everybody’s favorite house.” L

“The fellow at the next table was
singing the praises of Big Sur’s Post Ranch Inn,” she says. “I was the Post Ranch architect’s right-hand person when I was with that firm.” The environmentally sensitive, oceanside hotel in California is widely considered one of the world’s top travel destinations. “So,” says Sisson, “I introduced myself.” “It was a wonderful coincidence,” says the contented owner of this rocker-top retreat outside Ridgway. “I had been looking for someone who shared my vision.” It turns out he wanted a cabin very much like a terrific freestanding suite you might check into at that great resort. Only this would be even better; the home’s acreage is four miles down a dirt road and borders 3.9 million acres of Colorado wilderness. “I wanted a getaway, and boy do I feel like I got away,” he says.

Sisson brought her deeply considered ideas about organic design to the project. For her the term is more than a trend; it is something larger and philosophical, almost reverent. “Organic architecture evolves from the local landforms and wind patterns,” she says. It keeps space efficient, but crafts places that are just the right size to satisfy needs, no larger and no smaller. Sisson begins her design with a large curve—comprising both wall and roof—on the north to act as a shield against the elements. She arcs it upward and southward to create the dramatic living space. Instead of dropping it to the ground on the south she stops it well shy of the earth, finding just the right place to pause so the roof provides shade on the glass, but allows open views. “Curves that enclose space feel both intimate and grand,” she says. Into this arc she cleverly nests everything the owner needs. An intimate living area bounded with a leather-upholstered sofa faces a two-sided fireplace; the master bedroom reposes on the other side of that fireplace.

twilight zone The cabin comfortably hunkers into its site. Glowing like a firefly at twilight, the home completely opens itself to its southfacing vista, with Weather Shield doors and windows from JB Window Specialties.
gotta have hearth The two-sided Heat & Glo fireplace from Alpine Stove & Fireplace—clad in the same aluminum from Recla Metals that covers the exterior walls and roof—is visible from throughout the cabin, creating a focal point for both the living room and bedroom. A table lamp from Palladin Design & Gallery adds an organic touch.
raise the roof The curl of the ceiling arcs high enough to accommodate a sleeping loft. Barn wood from Southern Wood Imports is repurposed into kitchen cabinetry and paneling, bringing an organic and culturally rich material into the cabin. Track lighting from Juno Lighting Group lines the kitchen ceiling.

A loft for the occasional guest tucks in above the kitchen, and a cylindrical built-in bench envelops the diminutive dining table. A deck spreads wide along the vista-viewing glass. “Organic architecture is about living outdoors as well as in,” Sisson says. While the form was complex to design, it was even more complicated
rite of passage To make a simple front door into more of an entrance, architect Lea Sisson used a round top and expanded the peephole. The dining curve nestles into the north wall and the leather-covered bench eliminates the need for too many chairs. Barn wood paneling reappears as a unifying element.
to construct. “Getting all the flats and curves to fit together was a challenge,” says Gus Trujillo, owner of Mountain Steel Construction in Montrose, who helmed the build. “At the beginning of each day I thought, ‘How are we going to do this?’ And at the end of the day we all walked away satisfied.” Exterior materials are meant to fend off weather; sturdy aluminum paneling sheaths both curved and flat surfaces. Winter-weathering cedar is used for battens and windows. Inside, finishes are organic in the more traditional sense of the word. Floors are oak, trims aspen, cabinetry is luxe interiors

northern exposure The house presents cedar battens and corrugated metal roofing to the elements. Originally the property’s pump house before the cabin was built, the gable-roofed structure on the left has now been converted into a spa-like bathroom.

2011 denver designer show house
rooms of distinction Hailing from Denver, Vail and Aspen, 28 acclaimed interior designers descended upon the famed Cowperthwaite Estate to share their talents by participating in the 2011 Denver Designer Show House, a stunning showcase of design and décor, all to benefit the Children’s Hospital of Denver. Among the esteemed industry leaders in attendance were Bobby McAlpine, who served as honorary chairperson of the event and Susan Ferrier, a gracious guest designer for the library space. The event kicked off with an opening night cocktail party where guests had the opportunity to mingle with the interior designers while previewing their breathtaking designs featured throughout the home. Lectures and book-signings were also among the itinerary of exclusive events offered during the Show House festivities. Proceeds benefitted the Children’s Hospital of Denver, a facility dedicated to providing state-of-the-art pediatric care in a family-friendly environment. Founded in 1908, the hospital has been providing effective treatment to more children than any other hospital within the seven-state region. Located at 1625 East 3rd Avenue, in the historic Country Club neighborhood, the legendary home proved to be an ideal setting for another successful and impressive Denver Designer Show House event.

the art of luxe living On June 16, Luxe Interiors + Design and Paragon Technology Group celebrated the Third Annual Art of Luxe Living at the Aspen Art Museum. More than 240 people attended the event including high-end designers, architects, artists and builders from throughout the state.
