XR Summit: B2B and entertainment are now main use cases

Muki Kulhan gave XR Summit attendees an insight into VR innovation in the entertainment sector

Sviatovid: an ISE world first Sviatovid, the latest projection mapping showpiece from master projection designer Bart Kresa, who gave Monday’s Opening Address, was unveiled at ISE yesterday evening. It is the first time that the sculpture has been displayed to the public, and brought a spectacular end to the first day of ISE 2019. It will remain on show every evening this week outside Entrance C of the RAI Amsterdam.

The consumer market hasn’t embraced VR because the industry hasn’t nailed the storytelling, according to location-based entertainment VR expert Bob Cooney. Speaking at Tuesday a!ernoon’s XR Summit at the Hotel Okura in a session exploring take up of the medium, Cooney argued that the challenge for storytellers is that it puts the user the centre of the experience. “Stories are usually other people’s stories told to you. But with VR, you are the one that is living the story, and we haven’t figured out how to write so that the user can explore their own story. That’s why it’s not resonating with people,” he said. Disappointing consumer take up, however, has not stopped firms from experimenting with immersive technologies, particularly in the B2B, travel and entertainment sectors. Cooney argued that location-based entertainment has a clear business model because “a couple of times a year, people will visit and buy tickets”, especially if it is integrated with other media. A successful case-in-point he mentioned was The Park Playground in Antwerp, Belgium. This location-based amusement park has integrated a TV series, involving a bank robbery that goes wrong, into one of its experiences. Fellow speaker Pieter Van Leugenhagen, co-founder of Yondr, said that although the consumer end of the market slowed down for his company in 2016, his firm has built up a solid business producing 360° and VR experiences for the B2B sector. Web AR and AI lead the way in AV innovation

Future facing: On the AV Magazine Panel Debate Future Technology yesterday, (L-R) Clive Couldwell, Editor, AV Magazine; Evan Grant, founder, seeper; Amelia Kallman, futurist; Matthew Drinkwater, head of fashion innovation agency, London College of Fashion; Sanj Surati, digital atelier, Tiger Heart

Futurist Amelia Kallman predicts that Web AR – which uses mobile devices to provide Pokemon Go-style augmented reality experiences – will be one of the biggest trends in AV in 2019. Speaking on a panel of experts looking at future technology on the ISE Main Stage in Hall 8, she said: “Web AR’s take up will be rapid because all you need to do is point your camera and you have the experience. “For years, retailers have tried to bring physical and digital

Educating the market The education sector continues to be one of the most dynamic verticals when it comes to implementing new technology, and it’s helping to drive growth in the pro-AV market. This was a key finding at AVIXA’s What’s Next… Higher Education conference yesterday, supported by EUNIS and SCHOMS. Sean Wargo, senior director of market intelligence, revealed that in an AV industry worth $179 billion in 2017 and expected to swell to $229 billion by 2023, the education sector is one to watch. Although dwarfed by corporate, it’s valued at $13.8 billion and is a market that’s not just growing, but still represents a major opportunity.

experiences together. Now, you will be able to create events such as scavenger hunts in-store, which people can share on social [media].” Kallman, who also chaired yesterday’s XR Summit, added that if payment systems are integrated into the experience, it will enable retailers to provide customers with a seamless in-store and mobile experience. Fellow panellist Evan Grant, whose company, Seeper, designs interactive attractions using AR and VR, added that

Interestingly, the average project value in the sector was just under $70,000, suggesting a sector in which integrators carry out multiple small projects is the norm. Some of this investment has undoubtedly come from the growing focus on collaborative learning environments in recent years, and interaction and participation were at the core of the conference. James Rutherford, learning spaces specialist, and Dom Pates, educational technologist, both from City, University of London, had delegates on their feet analysing the conference space from the view of both teachers and learners, the idea being to encourage people to consider teaching spaces from a different perspective and see how it can affect the ability of users to teach and learn. Thierry Koscielniak, chief digital officer at CNAM,

his firm is currently working with social media app Snapchat on an AR project for Lego, which aims to bring the in-store experience to the living room. “We put a lot of effort into making the Lego experience a simple one. People can load up their phone and walk around a Lego store. I think we are going to see more of this type of Web AR experience,” he said. For the fashion industry meanwhile, a mix of AR and VR could create “an entirely new platform” for designers to create assets, according to Matthew Drinkwater, head of the Fashion Innovation Agency at the London College of Fashion. The agency, which last year worked with Lucasfilm’s immersive entertainment lab on a series of digital garments created by Canadian designer Steven Tai, believes that entire virtual collections could soon be created. Adding AI to holography is another AV tech trend, according to Sanj Surati, digital atelier and founder of immersive experience firm Tiger Heart. The firm is currently working with artist Sara Pope, who is creating a holographic pair of lips fused with AI. “She will start asking you questions,” said Surati. The idea is to create an emotive experience where the user engages with the lips.” Surati said the idea was inspired by an AI app that allows fans to talk to the cartoon character Peppa Pig. “It’s just one example of fantastic engagement that needs to be transposed to other parts of AV,” he said.

continued on this theme with a hands-on workshop highlighting the opportunities and use cases for 360º immersive learning experiences. A self-confessed pedagogy geek, Koscielniak explained that: “In the coming years, everyone at home will have a VR headset, just as we all now have mobile phones. We, as HE institutions, need to provide the learning resources for this.” One possible application he identified was using facial and emotion recognition to enable professors to see how their students were responding in lectures. “All the algorithms exist. You could build the app,” he explained. Dr Gill Ferrell, event moderator and lead consultant at Aspire, concluded: “It feels like we’re futuregazing, but many places are taking their first steps here so it’s only a matter of time before it’s mainstream.”

InAVation Award winners announced AV vendors, integrators, consultants and distributors have walked away with accolades a#er a glittering night at the InAVation Awards, powered by ISE. At a seated dinner last night at Amsterdam’s Gashouder venue, 12 Technology Awards and 12 Project Awards, were handed out. Among the winners last night, Stouenborg’s Anders Jørgensen was named as the 2019 Consultant of the Year, Maverick AV Solutions won Distributor of the Year and Venav Audio Visual Consultants picked up the AVIXA Standards Award.

Continued from page 1 Yondr’s work has included creating virtual wayfinding tours so that people can navigate around big warehouses, and for travel brands to enable customers to go on virtual trips before they buy a holiday. “It’s a huge business opportunity for a travel industry suffering from a price war,” he added. In entertainment, meanwhile, digital producer Muki

Kulan gave delegates a whistle-stop tour of companies that have been innovating with VR. These included the upcoming virtual holographic tour featuring Amy Winehouse (already sold out), in which a projection of the late singer will “perform” digitally remastered arrangements of her songs, backed by a live band, singers and what the production company Base Hologram calls “theatrical stagecra!”.

Kulan also helped produce a location-based AR experience, Consequences, written and performed by Harry Shotta, which takes users on a journey through a London Grime Club. Using VR and AR to enhance virtual online collaboration was also a use case demonstrated at the conference by Kalle Saarikannas, head of partnerships at Glue collaboration.

Sharing vision for elite home cinema A selection of winners of CEDIA’s annual awards – which showcase the best projects in residential design, installation and integration – talked through some of their projects during CEDIA’s Main Stage sessions on Tuesday. They included Peter Miller, client sales manager at Cornflake, whose London-based firm picked up the 2018 award for Best Home Cinema product in the £340,000 and over category. He was interviewed on the Main Stage in Hall 8 alongside home-theatre pioneer Theo Kalomirakis, who has designed private cinemas for film stars, sports legends and world leaders. Due to the price of real estate in central London, where some of Cornflake’s wealthy clients are based, Miller said that such projects o!en involve undertaking some major subterranean construction. Miller added that the clients and their interior designer often want the technology hidden to maintain a sitting room environment. This, he says, can lead to some interesting conversations with designers and architects. “From our point of view, we want the room to sound and look the best. The client tends to understand the aesthetic kind of things more. We need to listen to the designer, train them about the limitations, and ensure we don’t jeopardise what either party wants to achieve,” he says. Kalomirakis added that it was best to have this conversation with the client and the designers. “Technology and design have to go hand in hand. We need to confirm what parameters are necessary to achieve the best.” Another winner, Buckinghamshire-based integrator The Next Level, swept the board at the CEDIA Awards last year, picking up a total of five trophies for its

Projectors are easier to use, deploy SONY Stand: 1-N20 Two new installation projectors are being launched by Sony at ISE 2019. Offering WUXGA resolution and brightness of 6,500 lumens and 5,500 lumens respectively, the VPL-FHZ75 and VPLFHZ70 use a newly-developed 0.76-inch LCD panel with an incorporated optical compensator which Sony says enables them to deliver clear, bright and vibrant images. Both models also come with an ‘intelligent setting’ feature, which is said to simplify the installation process by automatically selecting the best configuration based on the environment the projectors are used in. Whether that’s adapting to a brightly-lit meeting room, a lecture hall filled with natural light, or a subdued exhibition display, Sony says that the VPL-FHZ75 and VPL-FHZ70 will optimise their performance in relation to their environment. The feature includes pre-sets for meeting/class rooms, museums, entertainment venues and multi-screen setups. Speaking at ISE, Robert Meakin, European product manager, said: “The ‘intelligent setting’ feature is one that we believe can make an important contribution to how easy it is to deploy a projector, and adds real value for integrators and end users alike. We plan to roll it out across more models in the range, as well as extend the number of presets available.”

Precisely mounted projectors and panels EUROMET Stand: 12-P110 A range of new flat panel and video monitor mounts are key attractions on the Euromet stand this year. The latest addition to the range is Turn, launched at ISE, which allows easy rotation of large displays, without the need for buttons to be depressed or levers to be activated. The Arakno Wall telescopic video monitor mount is an adjustable wall support for video projectors, which

the company claims is ideal for mounting high-end and heavy projectors. It is quick to install, while a regulation system allows for precise, fast and dependable focusing of projected images, says Euromet. The company is also developing a creative workshop, where a team of designers, supported by an experienced supply chain, work with the client to achieve a solution to project challenges.

Rosi outlook for music EBH RADIO SOFTWARE Stand: 7-E230 ISE 2019 finds EBH Radio So"ware highlighting the availability of Version 7X of its long-established Rosi Background Music so"ware. Frank Harress, founder and CEO of EBH Radio So"ware, said: “The system has a number of unique features – for example, the ability to set parameters that avoid a track being played twice within the same timeslot over a five-day period – that have made it a very popular choice for background music applications.” As opposed to utilising the “old-fashioned method” of playlist creation, Rosi works with EBH’s proprietary music scheduling algorithm to formulate the playlist based on musical characteristics. It is possible to create as many ‘channels’ as required, with each channel consisting of a set of characteristics that users would like to hear. Simply open a channel within the zone player and music will be scheduled and played. However, EBH does provide customers with more than 150 standard channel playlists from which to choose. The company has also produced more than 100 channel playlists for individual projects.

Under control VISIOLOGY Stand: 15-H284 So"ware company Visiology is presenting a new version of its Polywall videowall management so"ware, which now supports AV-over-IP encoding to allow greater collaboration between different control rooms. Ivan Vakhmyanin, CEO of Visiology, said the new solution, called Polywall 3.0, offers new features to enable content to be displayed on multiple videowalls in distributed control centres. That, in turn, allows information to be shared and augmented by control centre teams in different locations, improving decision-making, real-time communications and centralised monitoring. Also at ISE 2019, Visiology is introducing some organisational changes that will see the company focus more on providing consultancy services to system integrators. The company relies on integrators to combine its so"ware with hardware from Matrox, for example, and now intends to exploit its own expertise to help smoothe the process. Vakhmyanin is convinced that Polywall is one of the most user-friendly products of its type on the market, and benefits from the company’s own background in building control centres. Other potential areas of deployment include control rooms in large commercial plants and corporate security rooms, for example. In terms of his focus at ISE this year, Vakhmyanin said it is on enriching existing relationships with partners. He said the event provides a useful meeting place for partners from across the globe. This is key because, although Visiology is based in Moscow, its geographical focus is on Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, India and Asia.

In its latest development related to high-resolution audio in the home, Meridian has developed two new in-wall loudspeakers, the DSP640.2 and DSP520.2. The new in-walls offer up to four power amplifiers per speaker as well as a higher output for more authentic, impactful sound. They can be used as full-range loudspeakers with no need for additional subwoofers. The speakers have also been devised for low visual impact. Sporting a mounting depth of only 100mm, the speakers can deliver lifelike sound discreetly in any media room or home cinema, claims the company. Meridian has also unveiled a new in-wall subwoofer at ISE 2019. Described as the perfect addition to a discreet in-wall cinema system, the new DSP in-wall subwoofer utilises the same back box as the DSP640.2. The result, says Meridian, is a subwoofer that offers deep bass with immense control and speed, making it suitable for playback of music and movies.

Martin Audio managing director Dom Harter introducing a raft of new products yesterday at ISE

Maintaining a hot creative streak that has seen the company introduce more than 30 new products in the last three years, Martin Audio’s ISE press conference saw key launches including a new model for the Wavefront Precision Series of line arrays, the Longbow (WPL) edition. Introduced in 2017, the Wavefront WPM and WPC models utilised the technology behind Martin Audio’s self-powered MLA Series systems in a new line array format with a scalable approach to external amplification. The latest addition, the WPL, brings this philosophy to large-scale touring and installation applications. Designed as a complete system with external iKON multi-channel amplifiers, automated DISPLAY optimisation so"ware and VU-NET control platform, WPL is suitable for stadium and arena concerts, outdoor festivals and houses of worship, among other environments. Dom Harter, managing director at Martin Audio, said: “The first systems have already been delivered to two customers in the US, and we have orders for further systems around the world.”

Also introduced yesterday was the SXC118, which is a high compact performance cardioid subwoofer. It features an 18in (460mm) forward facing driver and a 14in (356mm) rear-facing driver, each driven independently by separate channels and DSP from an iK42 amplifier. Each driver has its own chamber with optimised bass reflex porting. Meanwhile, the ADORN on-wall loudspeakers have now

Cox: ‘vx 4 playback is industry leading’

Lady Gaga and Ed Sheeran demand nothing less than the best concert experience for their fans, and for real-time visualisation for the likes of these artists, Disguise feels you can’t get much better than its new server. Five years of R&D have gone into building the vx 4 server, which has been engineered to play back up to four times uncompressed 4K 60p calibrated for HDR using a high-performance NVME RAID drive array. Additionally, the vx 4 offers lossless 10-bit video, and can capture either 16 3G-SDI sources, or four 4K sources (2160p60). The revised chassis design features a new hi-res OLED front panel for more detailed system information. A prerelease version of the vx 4 server is being shown in Hall 8. Sarah Cox, sales director, EMEA for Disguise, said: “This playback is industry leading. It has to be for live events, concerts, broadcast, eSports or automotive launches – anywhere where image quality is the driving factor.” For end-to-end control of the image, the device runs on the latest r15.2 so"ware. This includes integration with the range of PTZ cameras from Agile Remote Cameras, enabling full control over exposure, gamma, gain modes and other settings and a

A key update to the so"ware is a new colour profile feature, which allows users to tailor combinations of input colour space (including Rec.709, Rec.2020 and RED) and gamma curves from multiple camera makers (ARRI, Sony, JVC, RED among them). Users can set a colour profile to content and/or display and the Disguise server conducts a real-time conversion, a feat so impressive it would make even U2 go gaga.

Two pendant style models in the new desono speaker family – the P6 and P6-SM – have been announced. Engineered to solve a The desono pendant series wide range of installation problems, the new series is mechanically steerable. Both styles of speaker include an internal 70V/100V transformer with a 16ohm bypass. Joe Andrulis, executive vice president of corporate development at Biamp, said: “The pendant styles of our new desono speakers are the combination of Biamp’s legendary audio expertise, along with careful attention to industrial design that delivers a product with an unprecedented combination of great sound and great looks. Now, facilities with open ceiling designs and open floor plan environments can enjoy a superior audio experience that complements and accentuates interior aesthetics.”

Gigantic micro marvel SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS Stand: 4-S100 Those interested in what the future of displays might look like are heading to the Samsung stand, where the company is showcasing The Wall – a 219in modular screen created using MicroLED technology. According to Samsung, the nature of MicroLED means that restrictions on size, resolution or form are eliminated when creating a display. The Wall is a self-emitting display with micrometrescale LEDs, which are said to be much smaller than current LEDs and serve as their own source of light. The MicroLED technology featured in The Wall eliminates the need for colour filters or backlight. MicroLED technology is also claimed to excel in durability and effectiveness, including luminous efficiency, light source lifetime and power consumption. Featuring a module-based, bezel-less design, Samsung says that The Wall also exemplifies how consumers and business professionals can customise display sizes and shapes to suit their needs. This means that the screen can adapt to serve different purposes, such as creating a wall-size display for multiple spaces. Typical applications might include a corporate lobby, museum, gallery or luxury retail space.

SONUSFABER Stand: 14-C150 A#er 35 years of producing luxury high end loudspeakers, Sonusfaber – part of the McIntosh Group – is bringing its custom installation speakers to ISE for the first time. The family ranges from entry level speakers at €900, up to high-end €120,000 powerhouses. All are hand built in the company’s Italian factory. The company says its products were all specifically designed to bring functionality and aesthetics to a living room or media room. Thirteen different models sport either a traditional magnetic fabric cover, or classic elastic grille masks for an ‘interestingly different’ finish. Three of the company’s top models are provided with a wooden sealed box, which can be used when sound isolation is necessary – avoiding sound pollution between floors while allowing precise control of speaker loads. It is also possible to open the boxes, allowing acoustic loading of the void within a separating wall, for example.

50,000 lumen projector revealed

Kulessa:: Kulessa: ‘a single RQ50K offers the same potential as multiple lower brightness projectors’

PANASONIC Stand: 1-H20 At a packed press conference on the company’s ISE stand yesterday, Panasonic took the opportunity to introduce a raft of new products in its projector, display, lens and PTZ camera line-up. On stage with Hartmut Kulessa, Panasonic’s European projector marketing manager, was Bart Kresa, whose newest projection mapping showpiece, Sviatovid uses four Panasonic 30,000 lumen projectors and is making its world debut at ISE. Asked what he wanted most from projectors, Kresa responded “more brightness”– cueing the announcement by Kulessa of Panasonic’s new 50,000 lumen platform. “The PT-RQ50K maintains Panasonic’s trend of creating projectors which combine high brightness with relatively compact dimensions, simplifying installation,” said Kulessa. “That’s especially important when working under time constraints at large events. Additionally, a single RQ50K offers the same potential as multiple lower brightness projectors, saving on installation and set up.” Panasonic says it has extracted even higher performance from the cooling system technology featured on its flagship 30,000 lumen PT-RQ32K,

achieving almost double the brightness within the similarly compact body. Hermetically sealed optics and filterless design contribute to its 20,000 hours of maintenance-free projection, even within severe environments. Kulessa said reliability is further

MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC Stand: 2-A20 A major expansion of Mitsubishi Electric’s 4Diamond Grid product line is being seen for the first time at this year’s ISE show, comprising seven new LCD displays. Spokesman Adrian Jones told the ISE Daily the screens are designed for constant use in control room environments, where reliability is key. The displays also feature screen controllers and display management so!ware. The new displays include Full HD and UHD displays in sizes from 49in to 98in diagonal, along with extreme narrow bezel 55in tiled LCDs in two brightness variants, and an ultra-wide format 88in LCD display. The new displays enhance the ability of systems integrators to deliver complete control room solutions from within the Mitsubishi Electric product range. Also announced at ISE 2019 is a significant enhancement to the operational lifespan of Mitsubishi’s 60HS12 slim cube, which is now capable of achieving 100,000 hours

of continuous 24/7 operation, an increase of over 60% on previous versions. The company’s WE120 cube remains the flagship model, capable of 130,000 hours, or nearly 15 years, of continuous, maintenance-free operation.

Archibald makes marketing move to Clear-Com CLEAR-COM Stand: 7-K190 One of pro-audio’s best-known marketing executives, Rachel Archibald, has joined the Clear-Com team as director of marketing. Archibald previously spent 17 years at Meyer Sound in increasingly senior marketing roles, culminating in 12 years as director of marketing. She led global marketing and communications programmes that contributed significantly to the company’s years of growth, providing support for sales and organisational goals as well as enhancing brand awareness. In addition, Archibald was instrumental in the development of the thought leadership conference TIDE for AVIXA.

enhanced with a new ‘dualised’ concept within the projector. In addition to dual laser drives and backup video inputs, the RQ50K also features dual power supplies to ensure total reliability. The PT-RQ50 is set for release in December 2019.

Former Meyer Sound marketing director Rachel Archibald has joined the Clear-Com team

The TIDE conference explores the strategic impact of audio-visual technology and how creative implementations of AV can help to solve today’s business challenges. Bob Boster, president of Clear-Com, said: “Clear-Com is as committed as ever to growing its global business and developing more innovative communication solutions that help our customers stay connected. Rachel’s extensive understanding of the pro-audio sector, together with her proven, results-driven marketing experience, will enable us to articulate our plans to our customers, partners and the wider industry effectively and efficiently. We are very pleased to welcome her to the Clear-Com team.”

Harrison: ‘musicians are not being fairly compensated’

Canada-based Lenbrook Group has launched a new dedicated business division – Bluesound Professional. The new division is aimed at introducing music streaming and multizone audio solutions to commercial spaces such as restaurants, hotels, and other places of business. The ultimate objective is to create a proposition that would enable artists to receive royalties even when their music is streamed in commercial and public venues. “We’re amazed it has not been done before,” said Graeme Harrison [pictured], who has joined the company to head up the new unit. He added that the current system is “broken” because musicians are not being fairly compensated for their products. In the coming months, Bluesound Professional will engage with musicians, record companies and others to find a solution that better suits how music is consumed and played today. Harrison even suggested that it may be time to get rid of rights organisations because they have not been able to meet the needs of the artists they represent. Although nothing has yet been decided, options could include lump-sum payments for commercial licences to use streaming services. “The chance to build Bluesound Professional from the ground up and to introduce modern methods of sourcing and distributing music content in commercial installations was irresistible,” said Harrison. “I’m excited to introduce this new brand, the concepts behind it and our products to the industry.” Industry veteran Harrison was most recently the executive vice president of marketing for US-based commercial audio company Biamp, and is now tasked with developing Bluesound equipment and solutions for the commercial arena.

Splash, not smash PEERLESS-AV Stand: 12-H90

Tom Fenton, business development manager for Peerless AV, proves the resilience of the company’s outdoor LED screens

One of the many eye-catching attractions of this year’s ISE is a geodesic dome outside the Park Entrance F of the RAI. This is being used by exhibitor VIOSO to dramatically showcase the capabilities of its warping/blending software, and how that software interacts with third-party products. On VIOSO’s main ISE stand is its mini dome, which uses camera-based software for warping and blending demonstrations. VIOSO is also running hands-on dome calibration sessions. ISE sees the premiere of new versions of VIOSO’s software, including VIOSO Player 2, VIOSO Anyblend 5, VIOSO Anyblend 5 VR & SIM Edition, VIOSO Anyblend 5 INTEGRATION Edition and Pixera VIOSO Edition. Powerful projection FUJIFILM Stand: 14-C151 The world’s first two-axis rotatable lens projector is on demonstration on the Fujifilm stand. The company has recently been working on R&D, manufacturing and marketing of industrial optical devices including optical components of office equipment and projectors, in addition to a wide range of lenses, including 4K/8K compatible broadcast lenses. The company is now using this knowledge and experience to develop a projector that meets current market needs. The projector can be directed up, down, forwards, backwards, le# and right, to project images in various directions without having to move the main unit. This means it can project images not only on a wall or screen, but also on the ceiling and floor, and easily switch between vertical and horizontal display. The use of an ultra-short throw lens makes it possible to project images on a 254cm screen from a distance of just 75cm. The laser light source ensures the projection of bright and vivid images, claims the company. The projector can be placed horizontally or vertically for greater freedom in installation according to users’ wishes.

AV technology provider Peerless-AV is proving the resilience of its outdoor LED displays in Hall 12, dunking one of its screens in a tank of water, and inviting stand visitors to swing a heavy kettlebell at another (see image). Already available in 43in, 49in and 55in, a 65in version of the Xtreme High Bright outdoor display with IK10 rated impact resistant safety glass was launched on the first day of the show. The displays offer the highest environmental rating in its class, claims the company, as well as wide operating temperature range (-35°C to 60°C), a high TNI panel, optical bonding and 2500 nits of brightness. Alongside the High Bright Display line up, Peerless-AV is also showing its new outdoor Smart City Kiosk line, demonstrating several new ‘eye-catching’ LED concepts, and unveiling brand new design upgrades to its indoor information and wayfinding kiosks. These include the new KIPICT2555 fully integrated interactive kiosk, powered by BrightSign, and the KIPC25 universal indoor floor standing portrait kiosk with wheeled base.

Modular stage backdrop specialist AV Drop is presenting further innovations to its products at ISE, with the aim of making it easier for its customers to create and assemble stage backgrounds. This year, AV Drop is showcasing how mobile devices can be used as part of the design and assembly process. All the designs for stage backgrounds, including their respective drawing plans, are now available ‘in the palm of your hand’, according to the company. AV Drop suggests that these can be shown to clients as a sales aid or rental tool. In addition, each backdrop comes with all necessary items for its assembly to ease production for each event. AV Drop claims its modular system can enable the generation of all types of stage backgrounds, including straight or curved backdrops, with the possibility of installing front or rear projection screens and placement of branding. The system can be assembled without the need for tools, screws or nails, or extra woodwork.

Major revamp for monitor range RCF Stand: 7-N220 RCF has announced a major revamp of its MR Monitor Series, upgrading the components to deliver an improved sound as well as restyling the enclosures. Housed in self-extinguishing plastic, the MR series was originally designed to deliver audio performance and reliability in fixed installations where the speakers would blend with any décor. Suitable applications include general speech and music reproduction, bars and restaurants and leisure hospitality. To accommodate such wide usage, RCF has produced eight models offering different sizes and power handling, both with and without line transformer, and in a choice of black or white. The new models are organised in two ranges of 40W 2-way bass reflex speakers (MR40/40T/40W/40TW) and 50W 2-way bass reflex speakers (MR50/50T/50W/50TW). Unlike their predecessors, these are now sold in pairs, with special brackets designed for wall mounting, either individually or in clusters of four. All models use purposedesigned 1in voice coil woofers and 0.8in voice coil dome tweeters, combined with RCF Low Inductance Compensated Crossover (LICC) technology. Other features of the MR40 include passive filter 12dB/ octave, with crossover frequency 3kHz, bass reflex at 80Hz, low impedance or constant voltage lines. The MR50 boasts similar specs, but offers bass reflex at 65Hz.

Behind-thescenes ISE Tech Tours

ShowEvents Today

Projection mapping brings nhow Amsterdam RAI to life The week-long projection mapping display is a must-see addition to ISE 2019

Specially curated tours reveal the details behind unique AV and integration projects located in and around Amsterdam, including why, how and where technology is used and the core design principles involved. Today’s tour takes in the Anatomical Theatre of Wonder Tinker Imagineers will take visitors back through six centuries of science in just six minutes at the updated Theatrum Anatomicum at Rijksmuseum Boerhaave in the city of Leiden. The museum is a treasure chamber of science and medicine and contains a showcase of curiosities. Storytelling takes place in an old anatomical theatre using transparent screens and featuring a spectacular, immersive show about the philosophy of science. Stan Boshouwers, founder and partner at Tinker Imagineers, explains: “Tech Tour visitors should expect an insight into the key design principals of the technologies deployed inside the Anatomical Theatre. They will hear about what technologies have worked well since installation and the decision-making processes as well as insight into some upcoming projects.” Today’s tour takes place from 10:00-14:00.

It has been a feature of ISE 2019 throughout the week: the striking nhow Amsterdam RAI (adjacent to the exhibition centre) becoming a canvas for an exciting projection mapping display that has been running from 17:00-20:00 each day of the show. The project has been brought together by Integrated Systems Events and the RAI Amsterdam, and is being delivered by ISE 2019 Technology Partner and media server and digital display specialist Green Hippo. The company has been working alongside hire and production experts LANG, a long-term ISE Platinum Sponsor and Technology Partner, while ISE Technology Partner Panasonic is supplying the projectors. ProDisplay, a specialist in innovative display solutions, has worked with LANG on a complete ‘foiling’ of the glass interior of the hotel to support the projection (see page 19). Content has been specially created by 3D-mapping specialist Tenfeet. Mike Blackman, managing director of Integrated Systems Events, said: “This unique showcase brings together the elements that make ISE such a special occasion – the harnessing of state-of-the-art technology with some of the world’s finest creative minds and production experts to creative a unique, immersive experience. It’s an exciting addition to ISE 2019.” Paul Riemens, CEO RAI Amsterdam, added: “We are delighted to support this exciting initiative at ISE 2019 together with Being Development, COD, nhow and Pleijsier Bouw. The new nhow Amsterdam RAI will be the canvas for the ISE showcase and is a welcome addition to the ‘RAI

family’ to further enhance the experience of exhibition attendees visiting RAI Amsterdam. This is a fantastic way to introduce the nhow Amsterdam RAI to the city and a prime example of ‘connecting’.” The projection mapping display takes place from 17:00-20:00 on the facade of the nhow Amsterdam RAI each day this week

NEW TECHNOLOGIES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND EXPERIENCES The Digital Signage Summit has quickly established itself as a must-attend event at ISE. One of today’s highlights promises to be the ‘Fireplace Talk’ delivered by Trey Courtney, global SVP and chief product officer of Mood Media, a worldwide in-store media solutions company. He spoke to Ian McMurray ahead of the show

‘The old world of AV being just hardware is waning rapidly, and clients want suppliers who can provide both hardware and so!ware solutions’ “I’ll be making three key points,” says Trey Courtney, in explaining the areas he will be covering in his Digital Signage Summit session today. “First: retailers should focus on the customer experience when planning and deploying new services into their physical locations. Second: data and content are key and should be planned ahead of time. This allows retailers to make adjustments quickly once new technology is deployed and allows them to gain insight into their customers’ motivations and preferences. Third: retailers should leverage technology partners that can provide more than one service. Picking separate vendors for each component – so!ware, content, service and so on – can lead to long-term challenges that are hard to fix once the technology is deployed.” It’s clear to Courtney that digital signage is – inevitably – changing. He sees it as morphing into more interactive experiences that integrate with many other services such as queuing, POS and data platforms. ENTHUSED “I see opportunities for retailers to invest in touchscreens and tablets that allow rapid deployment of new experiences like wayfinding and product configurators,” he notes. “This give customers tools to tailor their experience while in the retail environment.”

20

Courtney is enthused by some of the recent projects on which his company has worked, citing fashion retailer Primark as an excellent example of how boundaries are being pushed – enabled by new technology. Primark stores now feature LED screens in its windows rather than merchandise; in some stores, the company has taken the o!en-overlooked escalator and used LED walls to transform it into a feature. It has also created large LED walls on which content is sensor-triggered to attract the attention of passers-by. “Additionally,” he continues, “we’ve deployed interactive product experiences for large telecom brands in the US and are deploying interactive digital signage for large automotive brands across Europe and Asia.” Courtney is also excited by the opportunities he sees for retailers as they fight back against online merchants. “There’s much more they can do in terms of leveraging digital signage and interactive applications that allow the buyer to really get comfortable with, and excited by, the product,” he believes. “Technology like this can help to upsell without a hard sell. Retailers can also do much more with social media. “In-store technology is now allowing them to leverage frequent content updates and online techniques like A/B testing – just as web marketers do,” he adds.

ENVIOUS GLANCES Inevitably, the growth in the digital signage market is attracting envious glances from companies not yet addressing it. What would Courtney’s advice to them be? “If you’re not familiar with so!ware, then you should start understanding that world and becoming conversant in how so!ware and customisation of services can be done for businesses,” he responds. “The old world of AV being just hardware is waning rapidly, and clients want suppliers who can provide both hardware and so!ware solutions.” Like many others in the digital signage industry, Courtney is intrigued by the opportunities delivered by Big Data, and is hoping that at ISE 2019, he’ll uncover new services to help clients collect that data and then turn these into meaningful insights for retailers. “I’d also love to see what new mobile technologies are coming into the marketplace,” he adds. With almost 450 ISE exhibitors – around one-third of the total – claiming to have something to offer in terms of digital signage, it seems likely that Courtney will find what he’s looking for. Trey Courtney’s Fireside Talk at the Digital Signage Summit takes place today at 09:45-10:15 in the Grand Ballroom at the Hotel Okura.

Always a highlight of ISE week, the Stand Design Awards – managed by EXHIBITOR magazine – celebrate the ingenuity and creativity of ISE exhibitors in the build and display of their show floor stands. Tomorrow, we find out who has come out on top in each of the four categories. Busying themselves around the RAI exhibition centre this week has been a judging panel of expert designers and marketers who have been weighing up the shortlisted entries. The four categories are: 49sqm or less; 50-199sqm; 200399sqm; and 400sqm or more. Scores are based on eight different assessment criteria points, including strength of communications, integration of technology, impact, and effective use of space. “We have been consistently impressed with the calibre of exhibitry on display at ISE,” said Travis Stanton, editor of EXHIBITOR magazine, ahead of the show. “We appreciate the opportunity to honour the hard work, dedication and creativity that ISE exhibitors invest into their face-to-face marketing campaigns which, in turn, keeps the exhibit hall buzzing with excitement year a"er year.”

When it comes to business-critical conference calls, failure isn’t an option. But 75% of business users say the number one barrier to having a productive meeting is poor audio quality. So why put your trust in tech that can’t be relied on? The solution is the Shure Microflex® AdvanceTM MXA910 Ceiling Array Microphone and IntelliMix® P300 Audio Conferencing Processor. With the ceilingmounted MXA910 microphone, lobes with Steerable CoverageTM technology capture conversation from above. Hospitality Tech Summit Tomorrow’s conference at the Hotel Okura is brand new for ISE 2019

The professional AV industry worldwide generated $178 billion in 2016. Through 2022, it is expected that global AV revenues will increase 4.7% annually, creating an additional $52 billion in value. Hospitality is forecast to make up a sizeable chunk of that growth, as companies look to leverage technology (and IT) to deliver new and innovative experiences for hotel and resort guests. To investigate the opportunity, ISE is launching the Hospitality Tech Summit: a day-long event that forms part of the ‘ISE at the Okura’ programme. Through a series of education sessions and discussions, tomorrow’s event will help to educate attendees on the latest trends – including AV installations and arrival experiences, among others – plus networking opportunities for hoteliers, consultants, integrators, architects and more to share and discuss their own deployments. The Summit is hosted by the global trade association Hospitality Technology Next Generation (HTNG), which dedicates its services to advancing business through the collaborative development of open standards and technology solutions in the hospitality industry. The Hospitality Tech Summit by HTNG takes place tomorrow at 09:00-17:00 at the Hotel Okura, a short walk from the RAI. For details and tickets, visit www.iseurope. org/conferences

The perfect foil for nhow show Pro Display has been contributing to the daily projection on the nhow Amsterdam RAI hotel. The project is demonstrating the latest in projection mapping technology The nhow Amsterdam RAI, a new 25-storey hotel adjacent to the RAI exhibition centre, is being lit up with specially created content projected onto its façade each evening this week as part of a joint project between ISE and the Amsterdam RAI, and a number of contributing partners, including Pro Display. Technical planning and implementation of this unique project is being managed by LANG. Its primary challenge is to transform the glass façade of the nhow Amsterdam RAI into a surface that can support projection mapping. Working with Pro Display, the solution was to implement a complete ‘foiling’ of the glass interior of the hotel. Discussing the different technologies and techniques for projection mapping on this scale, Ben Hadfield, sales director at Pro Display, says: “Front and rear projection systems fulfil very different requirements. For example, large-format projection mapping systems could be costly to achieve using rear projection technology, whereas front projection technology offers much better ways to achieve this effect. Similarly, a project’s redundancy must be considered and even this has a technical solution to accommodate. Projection mapping onto buildings where the system is only required temporarily requires dry application films that can be easily removed a"er the event.” Content will be projected onto the nhow Amsterdam RAI Hotel from 17:00-20:00 each day throughout the week of the ISE show. You can read more about the project’s other contributing partners on page 22.

AV’s impact on sporting venues

blooloop returns to ISE with new conference

“A key development in the attractions industry has seen many theme parks and visitor attractions utilising sophisticated technologies to make their rides and attractions even more engaging and memorable for the visitor,” said Charles Read, managing director of blooloop, speaking ahead of this year’s event. “This conference represents a great opportunity to hear from the operators and tech companies helping transform this business.” Friday’s half-day conference, attractionsTECH, will examine how AV technology is being used to transform the user experience in the theme park and attractions sector – including museums, water parks, zoos and cultural and heritage attractions. There will be case studies on the success of selected rides, exhibits and attractions, and how they are developing increasingly sophisticated and immersive experiences – such as through the use of VR, AR and MR – to create richer guest experiences. attractionsTECH by blooloop takes place on Friday from 09:00-13:00 at the Hotel Okura. Emmy Award-winning director of Sydney-based consultancy Auditoria, Scott Willsallen will be among the keynote speakers at the inaugural AGORA conference tomorrow. Presented by MONDO | STADIA, AGORA will help to educate sporting venue managers and event organisers on how the application of the latest technology is impacting new and existing sporting venues around the world. Willsallen, an expert in sound design for major international events, including multiple Olympic and Commonwealth Games Ceremonies, will provide a keynote address looking at audio/visual technologies and their role in pre-game and half-time entertainment. He told the ISE Daily: “[A few years ago] many stadiums were less about fan engagement and more about displaying the scores and providing somewhere to sit and

watch the game. But more recently there have been great technological changes regarding sports presentation at the top-end, and the kind of developments that we first saw in 2012 [at the Olympic Games in London] are now trickling down and being seen in sports presentations all over the world.” AVIXA’s VP of content and communications, Dan Goldstein, will provide market intelligence on the sporting venue sector in the opening keynote at 10:00. The conference will touch on a number of themes ranging from enhancing the fan experience, and creating a new and future proof stadium infrastructure, through to the planning of ceremonies and events. AGORA takes place tomorrow from 09:50-14:30 in Room E102 (registration from 09:30). For more details and tickets go to www.mondostadia-agora.com

CEDIA launches Member of Excellence Programme This highly anticipated programme aims to encourage inclusiveness and celebrate excellence

By Jo Ruddock CEDIA has announced the launch of the CEDIA Member of Excellence Programme. There are two designations CEDIA members can achieve to demonstrate their company’s commitment to delivering exceptional experiences to their clients, investing in professional development and technical excellence, and serving their community. “We thought long and hard about how we wanted to approach this programme,” says Giles Sutton, senior VP of industry engagement. “It was important for the programme to have a holistic approach and represent the core values that many CEDIA companies already share and the aspirational values that would challenge

26

a company to reach the next level of professionalism.” The Member of Excellence Programme is built upon a foundation of continuing education, customer service and community. Companies looking to achieve one of the distinctions will start with these areas. CEDIA members who achieve the requirements for those three areas will be granted the designation of CEDIA Advanced Member. CEDIA member companies looking to achieve the highest level of designation – the CEDIA Member of Excellence – will need to fulfil the three primary requirements as well as requirements for certification and cra!manship. “The programme has been cra!ed in a way that meets the needs of our global membership. Companies of all sizes regardless of the market they serve are eligible

to participate,” says Tabatha O’Connor, CEDIA global president and CEO. “We are so excited to be able to provide this heightened platform to recognise and affirm those member companies who are consistently dedicated to excellence.” Companies that achieve the Member of Excellence or Advanced Member status will have access to exclusive CEDIA member benefits including logos, marketing tools and a preferred listing in the CEDIA Finder Service. Additionally, CEDIA Members of Excellence will be eligible for an additional five per cent off CEDIA training products. Full details on the requirements for each designation as well as the submission process can be found at cedia.net/excellence.

KNX and the Internet of Things

THE CURRENT STATE OF THE IOT MARKET:

KNX’S CONTRIBUTION TO IOT Combining multiple types of things to a coherent solution The following elements (highlighted below) are the cornerstones of the KNX IoT System Architecture: Semantics It’s crucial that: • devices can understand each other. • humans can understand what a device or service offers. Understanding the meaning of data (= semantics) is necessary to be able to combine functionality to create new functionality.

IoT functionality is increasing The more the Internet of Things takes shape, the higher the level of automation users expect. More products and things become available, generating more data. These increasing data streams are processed with big data techniques. Devices act upon this processed information to execute action to serve users in many ways. Complexity has increased, reliability and interoperability is however still not guaranteed • Many solutions are available that cover just one single use case (voice control, internet connected door bell, lights and room temperature regulator controllable by app). • To try to connect the different services provided by devices in a reliable way is not trivial. • In many cases, the correct functioning of devices depends on the internet connection. • Customised software integrations can break upon every software update and are very complex to secure. Reliability and stability is not guaranteed over a longer period of time, something that is a must for building automation. • Integration may depend on cloud services managed by third-party companies, out of control of the end user and with a specific business case in mind. KNX = long-term support and certified interoperability In its more than 29 years of history, KNX has built an unrivalled track record of guaranteeing long-term support of automation solutions in any type of building. Based on the KNX standard, building automation can be realised in a reliable, interoperable and extendable way: devices from over 450 manufacturers work together in very stable distributed environment without a single point of failure. The current ecosystem is physically easy to install and logically configurable with one single tool, ETS.

KNX can already be combined with IoT There are numerous good solutions from KNX manufacturers to connect KNX to higherlevel IoT systems already today. The internet side of these products is, however, not standardised or is created to match specific use cases. As announced in 2016, as a first step towards standardising the internet side of such KNX IoT gateways, KNX Association published the KNX web services specifications to allow aligning gateways to the existing web services protocols oBIX, OPC/UA and BACnet web services. Adding advantages from KNX to IoT As a further step in the KNX IoT project, KNX is now working on making the key KNX advantages of interoperability, reliability and extendibility also available on the IoT level.

28

The current KNX system ensures this by creating a project with ETS, thereby relying on KNX standardised data types to combine several products/functionalities. For IoT, it is important to be able to share this semantic information also outside the boundaries of the KNX ecosystem. Semantics allow devices and services to interact at different levels. For example, a wall switch might directly operate a specific light bulb, while a mobile phone app might put the building in ‘out of home’ mode, thereby indirectly operating the same light bulb. Semantics allow abstracting away technical details thereby creating extra value. As an example of such extra value one can execute commands like ‘disable the heating when the window is open’. Another example is ‘make it darker in the living room’ whereby the components within the distributed system can make the decision if this should result in moving blinds or dimming a light. Linked data is an already standardised and well-accepted way to share semantic knowledge. Linked data is the technology behind the semantic web, the so-called Web of Things. KNX is leveraging this standard and has created a KNX IoT ontology based on this technology. This stack ensures that information can be shared and interpreted in a common way. For the creation of this semantic information, what is possible today with ETS has been used as a starting point, but will be extended beyond that. This enhanced information will be made available in a standardised way between the allowed participating devices or services, making sure both humans and machines can interpret the created functionality. The backbone IoT network KNX’ new IoT standard will give freedom in realising the KNX IoT backbone on which information is exchanged, while also offering default out-of-the-box cloud services. As the solution is standardised, it will be possible to realise it with different components, according to one’s own needs; for instance, by using a different cloud provider, a private cloud, own hardware on the public internet or a private network, local devices or servers within the building, etc. This freedom is important to ensure the realisation of advanced use cases, thereby enjoying the advantage of the high availability and fault tolerance of the platform. The backbone network protocol will support eventual data consistency, as it is impossible to avoid that elements in the network become unavailable, for example, when a building is temporarily offline. During the time parts of the network are unavailable, one will be able to still change the state of a light, both in the building or on the internet. However, the KNX IoT backbone will inform about the unavailable network parts and will allow control of what state ‘wins’ once the network is fully operational again. Summary The KNX IoT solution will lower the barrier to access KNX as part of the Internet of Things. The aim is to reduce the knowledge required and open the current KNX ecosystem to non-KNX IT specialists through ‘out-of-the-box’ operation, while still allowing advanced configuration and adaption by specialists. The KNX IoT solution is defined in partnership with key KNX manufacturers and standardisation bodies (like Fairhair and the Thread Group). KNX is also working on proof of concepts to validate the solutions. Leveraging standards ensures that the value of KNX products is increased and long-term support can be guaranteed in a constantly changing IoT world. KNX has the advantage of a large KNX install base, which allows it to draw on a wealth of experience that will help successfully extend KNX integration into the Internet of Things. Further information about KNX IoT is available at https://www.knx.org/knx-en/forprofessionals/benefits/knx-internet-of-things/

MARCO KRAFT Head of sales, Germany, Riedel Stand: 6-K140 In your opinion, what is the best thing about the ISE show? ISE is Europe’s number one AV and systems integration show, where the pace of innovation is high. In Amsterdam we meet an audience of industry professionals and decision makers. It’s the perfect place to show the audience the benefits of Riedel’s combination of manufacturing and rental businesses, which is unique. We look forward to showcasing our Riedel ecosystem for seamless and bullet-proof communications and AV networks. What do you perceive to be the key developments in, or threats to, your market sector at the current time? So!ware-enabled hardware is one of the many changes that are happening today in the AV business. Besides cost-effectiveness, the big advantage of so!ware-enabled hardware is that clients can get a licence for exactly the functionality that they need, such as for a specific event. Riedel has been supporting this approach for several years both with the SmartPanel user interface and the MediorNet MicroN device. Customers in the AV and broadcast business demand scalable, flexible and easy-to-use signal transport and routing systems to give them a new dimension of flexibility for their temporary and fixed installs.

Why should delegates visit your stand at ISE 2019? At ISE 2019, we’re showcasing our latest innovations and solutions that are designed for productions in demanding environments such as multi-campus installations, stadiums, cruise ships and government buildings. At the Riedel booth, visitors gain first-hand experience with products such as the standalone application of the award-winning Bolero wireless intercom. They also get the chance to experience, first-hand, the versatility of Riedel’s new 1200 Series SmartPanels: the RSP-1232HL panel features multiple full-colour multitouch displays, 32 innovative hybrid-lever keys, the ability to leverage apps for multifunctionality, and easy adaptability to various workflows. Another highlight is MediorNet MicroN, an app-based 80G media distribution network device. The new apps for MicroN extend its range of functions by decentralised multiviewing, processing, or IP capabilities. Last but not least, a new network management system will enable non-professionals to handle media transport. We are convinced that these innovations will change the way AV professionals and broadcasters work.

IP-Ninjar portfolio expanded IDK CORPORATION Stand: 10-R180 To meet growing global demand for 4K video, IDK has developed IP-Ninjar, an IP-based, turnkey, high-definition audio/video signal delivery solution. System control, signal extension, distribution, seamless/KVM switching, videowall and multiviewing capabilities are fully integrated into the platform. Boasting full format agility, true 4K/60 4:4:4 HDR HDCP2.2 capabilities, edge-to-edge zero frame delay and unparalleled stability, the IP-Ninjar leverages offthe-shelf 10Gb Ethernet infrastructure to replace traditional baseband AV architectures. With an elegantly simple architecture, unlimited I/O and footprint scalability, and individual

node-level monitoring, IP-Ninjar unleashes valuable signal management advantages for pro AV and IT. At ISE 2019, IDK is presenting new IP-Ninjar solutions, developing a series of new I/O node models that expand the flexibility and universality of IP-Ninjar. The NJR-T01SDI offers a 3G-SDI input which enables SDI signals to input directly into the IP-Ninjar platform, while the NJR-AB08DAN enables audio signals to bridge between IP-Ninjar and Dante audio networks. The flexibility of IP-Ninjar is enhanced with new additions to the range

INSIGHT

Laser the key to experiential success Hartmut Kulessa, marketing manager at Panasonic Marketing Europe GmbH, outlines why, within years, technology experiences are likely to be decisive in the success of entertainment, education and cultural organisations If you haven’t seen Sviatovid yet, what are you thinking? Abandon your booth, put down your stroopwafel, forget your next appointment and get outside to see one of the world’s greatest projection mapping artists in action. Panasonic and Integrated Systems Europe have joined forces to bring master projection designer Bart Kresa’s newest projection mapping showpiece to over 100,000 people during this week’s show. Sviatovid is a faceted, five-metre-tall projection sculpture, and a successor to the iconic Shogyo Mujo, which debuted at the Burning Man Festival in Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA in 2014. Marking the launch of the BARTKRESA Academy, the sculpture creates a new benchmark in audio visual art and is illuminated through 360° in True 4K using four Panasonic 30,000-lumen laser projectors. The installation comes at an interesting time for the industry, as boundaries are pushed and the popularity of projection mapping grows. Panasonic research shows that a quarter of the industry is already seeing annual growth in projection mapping projects of more than 50 per cent. The benefits in regards to the total reliability and lower maintenance of the laser platform are self-evident. In my opinion this is behind the increasing number of semi-permanent and permanent mappings that become commercially viable thanks to the improved operation of laser projectors.

As producing content in all sorts of new forms becomes simpler to achieve, we are seeing costs falling and quality rising. As a result, they become increasingly attainable for smaller organisations and are on the way to achieving mass-popularity for commercial, educational and cultural applications. Creating technology-driven experiences will ultimately contribute to the ability of these organisations to stand out and hence to their power to attract their target groups. Away from experiential usage, we also see that laser projection is creating new markets within different sectors too. At the show this week, we’ll demonstrate how laser projection is opening up opportunities within retail and other signage applications. We’ll show how there’s an increasing convergence of different AV equipment, so that, for instance, projectors, PTZ cameras and flat panel displays combine within corporate and education environments, and projection and display technology are mixed for eye-catching public displays. The latest stats put Panasonic’s market share in Europe for above 5,000 lumens laser projection at nearly 44 per cent and we are looking to build on that at ISE with the introduction of a number of new units which will fulfil the growing need for 4K laser projection. And we’ve responded to numerous customer requests with the launch of three new zero offset lenses enabling installations where every inch of available screen surface

is used, in places where it was previously impossible, such as store windows, museum corridors, inside theme park attractions and in exhibition spaces. This is a game changer in terms of the scope of installations that our customers will be able to achieve and will ensure their customers are never short-changed when it comes to their experience. Sviatovid is on display outside Hall 1 and 2 (Entrance K) throughout ISE. Stand: 1-H20

New easy-to-use media servers AV STUMPFL Stand: 1-H5 Pixera is a new 64-bit system for real-time media processing, compositing and management, built around the key theme of ‘usability’. The new bundles offer more functionality and customisation possibilities for MediaMatrix control

nE Touch bundles for NION nE applications PEAVEY COMMERCIAL AUDIO Stand: 7-H200 In a bid to make the NION nE configurable DSP platform and associated NIO I/O cards more accessible for mid-sized applications, Peavey Commercial Audio has announced the availability of a range of bundles, dubbed nE Touch bundles. Available exclusively in the EMEA region, the bundle consists of a NION nE frame with any I/O card configuration and an optional Kiosk 180HD 7in touchscreen running Kiosk (the NION nE control so!ware) and the HTML5-based Kiosk2Go app which offers additional functionality and customisation possibilities for intuitive MediaMatrix control.

James Kennedy, operations manager at Peavey, said: “MediaMatrix technology forms the bedrock of some of the largest and most complex audio installations in the world, and as such can be considered a rather daunting and potentially costly solution by integrators working on smaller projects. However, what can do more can do less, and NION nE is every bit as suited to smaller installations as to large ones. By packaging it in this manner, consultants and integrators get to select exactly what they need to suit their requirements at a highly competitive price. Everyone wins.”

Dante device discovery boost AUDINATE Stand: 7-C230 Audinate’s network management solution, Dante Domain Manager, has been updated to provide advances in diagnostics and usability, extended auto discovery for legacy devices, and increased support for larger networks. The latest version of Dante Domain Manager now supports more than 1,000 devices. For larger Dante installations, customers can purchase expansion packs for the Platinum Edition to support up to 1,050 devices per instance of Dante Domain Manager. Other additions include the extension of the automatic device discovery service that customers have grown accustomed to with 4.0 firmware devices to include legacy (pre-v4.0) devices. This makes it easier for products with and without the 4.0 firmware to co-exist in Dante Domain Manager.

Dante Domain Manager now offers increased support for larger networks

The latest version also offers Network Diagnostics Report to provide instant visibility of basic network configuration via connectivity, DHCP, DNS and internet reachability tests. Available in the Network & Security settings, just a single click is required to quickly establish if there are any fundamental configuration errors on the network. Another notable feature is the ability to rename Dante without having to delete and recreate them. Joshua Rush, senior vice-president of marketing and products at Audinate, said: “Since its introduction to the market, Dante Domain Manager has been extremely wellreceived by OEMs, integrators and end customers. These new enhancements make Dante Domain Manager that

much more valuable by providing additional features that enhance the scalability and ease of use of the platform.”

What changes do you envisage in the digital signage market in 2019? Keith Dutch Managing director - EMEA, Peerless-AV Digital signage in 2019 will grow in tandem with technological advancements and changes in communication styles and processes. As the industry changes, true engagement with digital signage content becomes more and more crucial. Customers do not want digital signage to spew advertisements at them. They want content that is helpful to them – providing information on sales or wayfinding directions – and that serves to entertain them. If the signage is interactive, customers are even further engaged. Targeted marketing to consumer phones and tablets will become more of a trend. NPP LED has taken off in recent years and will continue to take an increasing share of the indoor video wall market. Innovative mounting solutions, for flat to wall or full-service LED video wall configurations, are available to support all the leading LED display brands and panel sizes. In the next 12 months we will see LED penetrating further, and without a doubt, we will see some exciting new developments at ISE 2019.

The R189 works with all Microflex gooseneck and overhead mics

Background noise is o"en unavoidable. Managing audio and pickup patterns in rooms with sound reinforcement can be a challenge as well. To help combat this, Shure has introduced the R189 lobar ‘minishotgun’ microphone cartridge which threads onto all Microflex gooseneck and overhead microphones to ensure the clearest communication in even the most complex and noisiest environments. The new R189 mini-shotgun microphone cartridge features a narrow, highly directional pickup pattern that rejects unwanted ambient noise and helps prevent feedback from sound amplification systems present in the room. With its slim dimensions and subtle design, the R189 seamlessly integrates with goosenecks on a table, lectern or even hanging mics. The R189 design ensures that users can easily customise their enhancements to their current Microflex installations. The new MX405/MS gooseneck and MXC406/ MS gooseneck will now offer the mini-shotgun microphone as part of the larger Microflex portfolio. Customers may also purchase a standalone cartridge (R189B) to exchange with existing products where tighter pickup is desired.

Which technology do you think will have the greatest impact on the industry over the next five years – and why? Jamie Adkin VP sales EMEA, Adder Technology The technology that has had the greatest impact on the industry over the past few years, and will continue to do over the next five – at least – is the network. It will continue to enable greater integration between technologies and allow far wider deployment. To be successful, it’s vital that businesses don’t bet against bandwidth. Technologies like 5G are on their way, and the bottleneck of bandwidth from source to end point continues to widen every year. The next step is for manufacturers to utilise it in the way that benefits customers the most.

In which areas do you see the virtual reality, augmented reality and/or mixed reality offering the greatest opportunities to your company? Chris Axford International sales & marketing director, Digital Projection Until recently, truly immersive 3D experiences and collaborative VR have been mutually exclusive: the solitary confinement of an HMD gave the best individual 3D experience, whereas collaboration-friendly projection was compromised by the single perspective view shared by all users. Digital Projection’s new INSIGHT 4K HFR 360 Multi-View 3D projector removes the compromise. By uniquely combining ultra-fast frames rates and native 4K resolution, multiple users can now enjoy truly immersive, collaborative and interactive 3D experiences.

Finally, a ‘heatpipe’ cooling system ensures optimum cooling of the Barebone. Tom Seiffert, head of marketing and PR for Shuttle, said: “The SH310R4 is positioned as a powerful entrylevel mini-PC at an attractive price. Three video outputs, two M.2 slots and the many USB connections provide plenty of flexibility. A special feature is the front of the chassis, which can be configured individually by simply placing a photo, a graphic or a logo behind the transparent acrylic plate.”

Giotto and Raffaello are two electric in-ceiling screens developed and manufactured in Italy by ScreenInt, and the company is demonstrating them on its ISE stand. The screens are said to have an innovative mechanical construction which makes them an appropriate solution for in-ceiling installation both in residential and professional environments. Giotto allows the screen housing to be installed first, with the roller tube, with the surface and motor installed a!erwards. This, says ScreenInt, is especially useful in construction sites where there is the need to complete the installation once the construction works are finished. The Giotto screen allows easy access to the motor and roller tube without the need to dismount the screen housing. The distinguishing characteristic of the Raffaello screen is that, once mounted in the false ceiling, the product is fully recessed, and no visible openings can be seen. The mechanism comprises two motors, one for the opening of the trap door and the other for the rolling down of the projection screen. The Giotto and Raffaello ranges include both tensioned and non-tensioned versions up to 450cm and 400cm width respectively and are available in a range of formats and custom sizes.

Sub sounds enhanced WATERFALL AUDIO Stand: 5-S130 Being introduced at ISE by Waterfall Audio are three subwoofers, each featuring the company’s new LD230 CRA driver, a successor to the LD230. Manufactured by Atohm in France, and based, the company says, on intensive research and development, Waterfall describes it as the pinnacle of low frequency driver design. According to the company, the new driver delivers higher energy efficiency, an improved dynamic range and exceptionally low distortion. The 23cm bass driver features a 40mm cone excursion. Waterfall Audio notes that the more excursion a driver has, the greater the volume of air it can push through – enabling it to deliver lower frequencies. The LD230 CRA also features a new, high-rigidity cone shape membrane using a specific alloy that the company says delivers better control of pistonic motion, which provides extended frequency response. The driver also leverages new rubber peripheral suspension and a new spider for linear extended cone excursion and long-term durability. The new driver is featured in the HF2-250S, HF3-500S and SUB 600S, all of which have the same dimensions as their predecessors. They are available in black (except the SUB600S) or white. Wireworld’s new cables are said to exceed the official USB3.1 specification

The Series 8 Starlight and Chroma USB cables are being introduced by Wireworld Cable Technology at ISE 2019. The flat cables utilise Wireworld’s Uni-Path conductor geometry and Composilex 3, as well as insulating and noise-absorbing power conductors to minimise triboelectric noise and improve the fidelity of music and video. The designs were developed through listening tests that compared prototype cables to virtually loss-free direct connections between components. Wireworld says that its Uni-Path conductor geometry uses dense multi-layer shields on each signal pair to provide extreme immunity to external noise and interference. This design is also said to minimise signal loss and crosstalk within the cable, for improved preservation of digital waveforms. Sound quality can also be affected by computer noise entering the DAC through the 5V power conductors in USB cables, Wireworld notes. To avoid this noise, the new Series 8 cables use noiseabsorbing power conductors with double-layer shields that isolate them from the signal conductors. According to the company, the cables exceed the official USB3.1 specifications and are available in lengths of 0.6m, 1m, 2m and 3m.

Huddle up TENDZONE Stand: 11-D134 Chinese company Tendzone has released the TCN 100 2U huddle room audiovisual central unit, which it is showcasing at ISE 2019. It’s an all-in-one unit that’s integrated with support for 12 channels 1080P@30fps video encoding or decoding, supports IPC camera inputs, has a 5 x 3 matrix switcher,

a 5 x 4 matrix mixer, a 2 x 100W@8Ohm amplifier and a 256GB buffer memory for recording. Create customised kiosks easily

Suits you: fitting room touchscreens are en vogue

ELO TOUCH SOLUTIONS Stand: 8-E185 A new platform, launched by Elo at ISE 2019, provides a low-power, solid-state, fan-less computing solution running Android 7.1 (Nougat) with the capability to scale deployments and remotely manage kiosks out-of-the-box. The company says that the solution, combined with Elo’s commercial-grade touch monitors, will allow integrators to “transform what was a bulky, highly customised kiosk into a sleek, scalable design”. EloView, a platform for remote content deployment and device management, further simplifies deployment and device maintenance of Elo touchscreens enabling OS management, remote and silent updates, kiosk

lockdown and automatic provisioning. Claiming to field one of the largest product portfolios in the industry, Elo is showcasing touchscreen products in various form factors from 10 to 70in at ISE. It is inviting customers to choose the size, form factor and platform they need and then configure the solution for expanded use through Elo Edge Connect, which offers a wide assortment of peripheral options. These are offered for endless aisle, self-order or collaboration applications. Customers can attach any combination of up to four peripherals to the edge of the touchscreen creating a bespoke solution – and add or move them later as needs change.

HYPERVSN Stand: 15-N265

KALEIDESCAPE Stand: 5-U80

Holographic display system specialist Hypervsn is showcasing what it claims to be the “largest holographic wall” ever at ISE 2019, building on the integrated 3D holographic display system it demonstrated at the previous year’s event. The system allows the creation, display and management of 3D holographic visuals that resemble holograms floating in the air. It combines the Hypervsn device with the scalability of the pro management so"ware and 3D holographic content.

In 2017, Kaleidescape, Procella Audio and Trinnov built an 11.3.10 system on the ISE show floor. In 2018, an 11.4.6 system was deployed. For 2019, the companies are demonstrating a 21.4.10 system. This year’s trade show floor environment has five screen channels: le", inner-le", centre, inner-right and right. The use of five channels behind the screen is common practice in professional cinema, Kaleidescape notes, saying that the demo this year shows why: it provides a rock-solid front soundstage with impeccable detail across the front. The configuration also includes 14 surrounds, two wides and 10 overheads to generate power, detail and immersive density in the environment. Finally, four subwoofers complete the system: one main LFE, one for the front screen channels and two for the surrounds and Atmos channels. Driving the demonstration at ISE is a Kaleidescape Strato S 4K movie player with content selected to show

Milestone for mini loudspeakers K-ARRAY Stand: 7-X223, 7-Y195 Described by K-array as ‘pioneering, powerful, exclusive’, the mini Lyzard-KZ1 is the latest addition to the company’s range of small loudspeakers. Although the “astoundingly small” mini Lyzard measures 2.1 x 5 x 2cm and weighs only 23g, the company claims the audio performance remains high profile with a 0.5in-long excursion driver contained in an ultra-resistant aluminium chassis. The high-efficiency driver, which covers a wide frequency range, has a neodymium magnet and suspensions engineered for maximum linear excursion and minimum residual transducer noise. The mini Lyzard is designed for discreet use in a variety of environments where high-quality background music is needed in a compact form – for example, museums and small retail stores – and is available in a number of premium finishes.

The Strato S 4K movie player offers a lossless Dolby True HD audio stream

off what can be achieved with a true Dolby Atmos home cinema. According to the company, powering this many channels requires a content source that can accurately supply a bit-for-bit, lossless Dolby True HD audio stream with Dolby Atmos 21.4.10 encoding. Kaleidescape claims it has the only movie player on the market with the capability to playback Dolby Atmos audio content exactly as the director intended.

Almost silent PC has no fans G2 DIGITAL Stand: 5-W114 The company’s latest rack PC, the Fanless NUC, is being officially launched on the G2 Digital stand. The product of an extended R&D project, it is designed to provide those working within a sound-sensitive environment with the benefit of a high-performance PC capable of running almost silently. Removal of the cooling fan not only makes the PC quieter, but also reduces the likelihood of PC failure. Chris Hollidge, director of G2 Digital, said: “Through our extensive development process, we’ve delivered something our customers and the wider digital-AV market has been screaming out for. The reduced

noise output from the Fanless NUC creates exciting opportunities for users operating within different AV disciplines, especially those where managing background noise is crucial. Our creation of the Fanless NUC has allowed us to bring a product to our customers that achieves something few of our competitors are able to offer, as well as offering all the reliability and support value G2 is renowned for.” The Fanless NUC includes support for latest eighth generation i7, i5 and i3 NUC motherboards, and an industrialised 60W 110-230VAC internal power supply.

4K multi-window processor on show TVONE Stand: 1-M140

RUTENBECK Stand: 9-F170 With the Universal Modular Jack Cat 8.1, Rutenbeck presents the first RJ45 solution corresponding to Class I/Cat 8.1. It is suitable for bandwidths up to 2000MHz without any restrictions on the mechanical performance of Rutenbeck’s RJ45 solutions. The new jack is backward compatible with the Cat 6A standard. The company claims it offers a significantly smaller design than any other known modular solution and is ideal for installation environments with limited space. The mounting of the universal modular jack is quick and easy without use of any special tools and therefore suitable for construction sites. Due to its keystone format, it can be used with any corresponding adapters in all installation situations and not only in data centres.

Being demonstrated on the tvONE stand is CORIOview. This compact 4K multi-window processor allows for each of its eight inputs to be viewed in any of the eight video windows. The company claims its ultra-low latency makes the ‘ideal solution’ for IP streaming as well as AV, broadcast and legacy inputs and embedded or S/PDIF audio outputs. The plugand-play solution features 16 front panel buttons for preset recall or source selection. Another product on display at ISE 2019 is the tvONE 1T-SX-654 auto switcher with four HDMI video inputs and one HDMI output. The ultra-thin 4x1 HDMI 2.0 switcher supports video resolution up to

4Kx2K@60Hz 4:4:4: HDR and provides 18Gbps of high bandwidth. In addition, audio functionality includes multi-channel support, de-embedded digital stereo audio to provide an analogue output, or an audio return channel (ARC) for transmitting audio back to the HDMI input from the connected display. When InfoComm reorganised as AVIXA, the Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association, in 2018, it foregrounded the importance of the “integrated experience”. While opinions vary, one framework to understand an integrated experience is the interplay of technology, content and the environment to create meaningful moments for users. Across the vertical spectrum, facility owners are tapping into the experiential potential to help increase user engagement. Take, for example, the French architecture and urban planning studio, Atelier Silhouette Urbaine, who created an immersive multimedia exhibition in Paris’s Atelier des Lumières using 120 projectors and advanced audio. Experience design firms are also helping traditional AV integrators and end users pivot toward more conceptual and experiential installations. MEET THE EXPERIENCE CREATORS For AV integrators who want to add integrated experiences to their portfolio, start by looking at who sits at the decision-making table: architects, designers, AV and IT managers, and experience agencies. One experience agency that uses new technologies to create memorable engagements in physical environments is OpenEye Global. The firm merges AV, interactive technologies, dynamic visuals and compelling content to connect people to spaces. Storytelling is a key component of OpenEye Global’s approach, said Bryan Meszarosceo, the firm’s CEO and founder. “We’ve always been focused on trying to tell a story, perhaps a brand story, or try to create a greater engagement through more unique methods than obviously the traditional. We use technology as the canvas”. In a recent project at a Michigan aquarium, the team was tasked with designing and creating an interactive experience that would encourage children (and adults) to learn about sea life. The experience, nicknamed Doodle Reef, is centred around the use of a custom iPad app and allows guests to create their own unique fish with an array of brushes and a palette of vibrant colours and effects. The final project consists of 16 inter-dependent iPads and their customised table mounts as well as two 86in multi-user multi-touch screens. All devices were networked for seamless inter-connectivity via backend servers as well as the necessary supporting so"ware and applications. AV UNLOCKS CONTENT Beyond deployment, AV experts can help clients reimagine what’s possible and suggest solutions that stay on budget. Understanding lumens and lens shi", for example, can help an artist plan and execute a real-time projection mapping experience in an arena. AV integrators might benefit from exploring strategic alliances with multimedia professionals, content creators, brand leaders and design associations like SEGD, the Society for Experiential Graphic Designs. DON’T STAY IN YOUR LANE The AV industry has a tendency to stay within its silo, according to Meszarosceo. But he believes that now is the time to open the aperture and look “for the opportunities that will come from other industries, not necessarily IT-driven relationships. They’re design agencies. They are brand representatives or facility owners. And they hang around in different environments. They’re at design shows.” It is also useful to think more systematically about elevating engagement and solving pain points in other industries. What will museums need and want for their 2020 projects? How can AV help refresh a stale lobby? How can IoT make a train station feel more personalised? To capitalise on the potential of integrated experiences, Meszarosceo urges AV pros to diversify their networks and teams. “Bring on someone that is a motions graphic designer,” he said. “Bring on someone with a CAD background, or someone that has a UI developer. Anything like that starts to bridge the gap of speaking different languages and helping interpret a vision. Whoever does that and builds that successfully in their practice, there will be a lot more opportunities. But if you stay down this course – business as usual – just looking for opportunities that come from IT, and divisions and companies, I think it’s going to be a little limited.” Margot Douaihy is the editor-at-large of AV Technology magazine.

Simplifying room designs

Turn any space into a home theatre

ATLONA Stand: 5-U120 ISE 2019 marks the international debut of Atlona’s complete All-IP Meeting Space solution which is said to simplify meeting room designs by bringing the power of large, enterprise-sized, IP-based systems to individual meeting spaces without the need for complex switching systems. The concept is adaptable to everything from basic meeting rooms, to advanced spaces such as divisible and overflow rooms. The All-IP Meeting Space is designed to help organisations eliminate the legacy technology that Atlona claims has long translated to complex systems designs, lengthy installation periods and high equipment and labour costs. According to the company, in the All-IP Meeting Space, the network switch becomes the

switcher, creating the freedom to deliver right-sized switching systems without the limitations of a fixed I/O matrix. Once deployed, Atlona’s All-IP Meeting Space is designed to solve the unique challenges of sharing content and AV resources, including digital signal processing and control, across multiple rooms. The complete multi-faceted architecture brings together IP-enabled Atlona OmniStream 4K/UHD encoders and decoders, Velocity control over IP, and peripherals including OmniStream USB over IP device adapters. Interoperability with third-party components, including DSPs and Atlona PTZ cameras, is said to be another benefit.

FutureNow automation focuses on openness P5 Stand: 9-E140

P5 offers DIN rail switches, dimmers, blinds controllers and thermostats under the FutureNow brand

Under the FutureNow brand, P5 is offering a range of DIN rail switches, dimmers, blinds controllers and thermostats. These can either be used standalone, controlled via free Android and iOS apps or integrated into complex automation systems using AMX, Crestron, Control4 or Savant. P5 says the main idea behind FutureNow modules is openness. It doesn’t offer a closed system, which would force integrators to use only its own products in a project. The company specialises in making automation peripherals with the communication protocol available to integrators and so"ware module developers, which means its DIN rail units can be made compatible with any third-party system. To take this even further, it offers ready-made so"ware drivers for the biggest automation platforms, either written by internal programmers or the manufacturers of those systems – or even by skilled members of its worldwide integrator base. The standalone operation combined with the local inputs not only makes it easy and quick to build a basic system

What is promoted as the world’s first wireless energy harvesting KNX light switch module that is configurable via ETS (from ETS5) is being presented by ZF Friedrichshafen at ISE. The KNX-RF Module – which is configurable without a gateway – uses energy harvesting technology to power the switch, and therefore needs no power supply for normal operation. This means that the module requires virtually no maintenance during operation. The accessory power supply is only required for programming or to make changes within the application.

The Flyte System includes five in-wall or on-wall speakers

The recently announced Flyte System from dARTS, a sub-brand of MSE Audio, is being showcased at ISE. The Flyte System features one DP4000-IA amplifier, five in-wall or on-wall Flyte speakers, and one DCB 12in subwoofer. The dARTS DP4000-IA amplifier manages an entire dARTS system with up to 16 channels of digital signal processing and amplification. Each DP4000-IA channel delivers custom DSP to control crossovers, phase correction, time alignment and EQ, in addition to providing up to 250W of amplification for each individual driver in every speaker. Jonathan Duran, director of marketing and sales for dARTS Theater, said: “With the new Flyte system, our goal was to create a system that was versatile and flexible, allowing end-users to turn any space into a home theatre. Through our proprietary speaker calibration process, we have eliminated the need for a dedicated home theatre room with extensive acoustical treatment. All dARTS systems are digitally calibrated in an anechoic chamber where each system is tuned to within 0.5dB of its reference response before they leave the factory. Once calibrated in the field, every dARTS system can be brought back to those reference levels in any room, making it the most immersive system available.”

ZF’s intelligent operating concept allows the switch to carry out up to six different functions. The functions available for dimming, shading operations, scene retrieval, or classic toggle operation make it possible to perfectly adapt each module to the user’s needs. The wireless light switch module comes ready to install and is compatible with standard frames and panels for energy harvesting light switch modules, and can also be combined with customer-specific designs and control panels.

Two products are being highlighted by SnapAV on its stand at ISE. The Luma Surveillance 510 NVR line includes support for cameras of a higher resolution (up to 12MP) than Luma’s preceding network video recorder range as well as 4K TV output, advanced search capabilities and a long-distance PoE switch. The latter capability enables a 300m distance from the NVR to a camera, as well as the ability to reset individual ports. The free LumaLink remote access service is designed, among other things, to eliminate insecure port forwarding and DDNS setup, and to synchronise and manage devices via OvrC. The company’s Araknis router offering has now expanded to four models, providing greater flexibility for integrators to choose exactly the right solution. The 310 model replaces the existing 300 model, while a 110 model provides a low-cost entry point and comes with a new WiFi option. The 310 router features embedded OvrC Pro functionality; Gigabit unidirectional internet speed support; and a 1U rackmountable design with AC power supply. It also includes a USB 3.0 interface to connect an LTE USB dongle for access to the site in case of ISP outage.

“I’m here to see tiny pixels in huge displays. Traditionally LED displays were good for long-distance viewing such as digital signage. The tech has developed where you can now see pixels close up. At ISE, there’s an explosion of it and LED is becoming a design language in its own right.” – Blair Parkin, principal at TEECOM.
