hen we got a call from Grant Dalton to ask if we were interested in working with CAMPER and Emirates Team New Zealand in their 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race campaign we jumped at the chance. Musto worked with Dalts on the Flyer campaign in 1981-82 when he was the sail maker on board, and since on Fisher & Paykel (1989-90), Merit Cup (1997-98) and Club Med (2000). Each time, we took feedback from Dalts and the crew, combined it with innovative design and materials to create better products – products which found their way into our technical sailing collection the following year. Advances like the Ocean One-Piece Suit, the Offshore Smock and the Three Layer System were groundbreaking designs of their time. Why do these sailors like Grant Dalton, Ellen MacArthur, Mike Golding, Pete Goss (the list goes on) keep coming back to Musto? It’s because we listen to their suggestions and work closely with them to create better foul weather kit that is innovative and performanceorientated, robust and reliable, but ultimately genuinely ﬁt for purpose. They wouldn’t go offshore in anything else. Closer to home, we can look forward to the excitement of the Olympic sailing competition in Weymouth Bay & Portland Harbour. Musto is proud to be working with the British, Swedish and German national squads (amongst other select crews from around the world) all of whom have one thing on their mind - medals! The result of this has been the creation of the ultimate performance dinghy clothing; gear that does not impede performance and provides lightweight comfort, freedom of movement, optimum heat regulation, waterproof & windproof and aero dynamic properties. Now all the sailors need to worry about is their sailing! So, what a year we have ahead of us; the Volvo Ocean Race, the Olympics then the Vendée Globe, and not forgetting the growing AC World Series. It’s going to be a massive year and we wait with baited breath to watch it all unravel.

The structure of the GORE-TEX® membrane comprises of microscopic pores 20 times smaller than a drop of water which prevents water passing through.

Pores in the GORE-TEX® membrane are 700x bigger than a water vapour molecule, allowing water vapour to easily pass through the membrane, keeping you dry and comfortable.

Designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, HPX is engineered from a 3-layer GORE-TEX ® Pro Shell with Ocean Technology ® membrane and Gore Micro Grid Backer™. These products offer the superior durable, breathable and waterproof properties required by serious professional ocean sailors. Stretch GORE-TEX ® fabric panels are incorporated to allow a greater range of movement.

Blocking any wind-chill, the GORE-TEX® membrane has been engineered to be durably windproof, keeping the wind out but allowing your skin to breathe.

To meet the needs of avid enthusiasts, Musto MPX is fabricated from a 3-layer GORE-TEX ® Pro Shell incorporating an offshore specification membrane. MPX Offshore garments are purposely designed for optimum performance whilst sailing for prolonged periods offshore. MPX Race garments feature Stretch GORE-TEX ® fabric panels to offer greater freedom of movement for high activity racing.

Other fabrics can weaken with wear or washing. GORE-TEX® fabrics are designed to be durably waterproof, windproof and breathable to maintain performance for the useful life of the product.

Designed for high performance sailing in warmer climates, LPX garments are stripped out and lightweight - constructed from a unique yet durable 3-layer GORE-TEX ® Paclite ® Shell which is exclusive to Musto in the marine market. These garments offer extreme breathability, waterproof and windproof comfort required for high activity sailing in higher temperatures.

BR2 BR2 waterproof fabric is an innovative 2 layer Nylon microporous coated fabric with a polyester mesh lining. The fabric breathes by allowing moisture from the warm high humidity zone around the body escape through microscopic holes which are too small for water to penetrate. The fabric is also treated with a DWR finish (Durable Water Repellent) forcing water to bead and run off. BR1 BR1 fabrics have a durable hydrophilic coating which ‘breathes’ by absorbing moisture from the warm high humidity zone and chemically driving it outwards and away from the body. The fabric is also treated with a DWR finish (Durable Water Repellent) forcing water to bead and run off. WINDSTOPPER® The WINDSTOPPER® membrane is an ultra thin protective layer which is laminated to a lightweight textile layer, making it totally windproof. It is made of the versatile polymer PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) which is expanded to create a microporous structure. These micropores are 900 times larger than water vapor molecules, allowing perspiration to pass through unhindered.This means that the WINDSTOPPER® membrane adds total windproofness to any textile without perceivably restricting its initial breathability or weight. OutDry® An innovative technology to waterproof garments where the standard manufacturing techniques based on seam-sealed waterproof fabrics cannot be utilised. The OutDry® patented lamination process is such that the waterproof/breathable membrane is directly bonded to the external layer of the garment, perfectly sealing any possible water entry point. ARCTEC Arctec high loft fleece is a breakthrough in durable, personal insulation - trusted by our test team to preserve core body temperature and maintain optimum working muscle temperature, even in bitter Southern Ocean conditions. Arctec fleece is soft, lightweight, warm and comfortable. Tiny air pockets in the super high loft fabric structure retain body heat whilst the lightweight breathable properties ensure rapid moisture transfer - keeping you dry, comfortable and warm with minimum bulk. It is hyrophobic, holding less than 1% of it’s weight in water, it remains much of its insulating powers - even when wet - and highly breathable, allowing perspiration to readily pass through the fabric. These qualities make it ideal for making clothing intended to be used during extreme physical activity.

PRIMALOFT® Primaloft® Insulation was originally developed for the U.S. Army as a water-resistant alternative to down and is globally recognised as the world’s best synthetic insulation. Musto products use Primaloft® SPORT, a premium performance insulation engineered for superior warmth, water resistance, loft, softness and compressibility. D3O® D3O® containing intelligent molecules is flexible and moves with the wearer yet locks together on impact- absorbing energy & providing superior protection. D3O® outperforms conventional soft foams of the same thickness on impact by up to six times. Schoeller®-keprotec® Hard wearing fabric using Kevlar®, an aramide fibre which is, gram for gram, five times stronger than steel. CORDURA® CORDURA® fabric provides rugged durable performance for a variety of end uses, including luggage, footwear and performance apparel. Products made with CORDURA® fabrics feature enhanced tear and abrasion resistance, and long -lasting durability which means a longer garment lifetime. CORDURA® fabric is constructed with qualifying yarns which are woven, dyed and finished in accordance with INVISTA’s approved fabric standards for the CORDURA® brand. NILIT® BODYFRESH Smooth, comfortable, high performance antibacterial yarn which provides increased, freshness through effective antibacterial action using silver ion technology. EVO|lite® Evolite products are a revolution in lightweight packable technology – 100% waterproof and breathable with minimum pack volume. Ideal for summer use and vacations.

2012 OLYMPIC & PARALYMPIC SAILING CLASSES

he Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) will play host to the Olympic classes sailing competition from 29th July – 11th August and the Paralympic classes from 1-6th September. Thirteen classes of boat will battle it out in a series of eleven races on the waters of Weymouth Bay and Portland harbour, the final race being a double-points scoring medal race. Each class will complete several laps of a course designed for its specific type of racing and wind strength.The first across the finish line is the winning boat.

470 MEN & 470 WOMEN The 470 is a two person performance planing dinghy which is quick and lively and sailed by 2 men or 2 women. It is equipped with a spinnaker and has a total sail area of 12.7m2 . With an optimum total crew weight of 110-145kg and the crew on a trapeze wire, teamwork is essential for success. 49er The 49er is the fastest two-person monohull sailing dinghy with more than double the sail area of the 470. This high performance skiff has a vast sail area, large asymmetric spinnaker and requires great athleticism to sail. Sailed by two, both on trapezes, with an optimum crew weight of 145-165kg. ELLIOT 6m (WOMEN’S MATCH RACING) Unlike the other classes which sail in ﬂeet races, the Elliot 6m which is sailed by three women has the added excitement of being a match racing competition; a one-on-one sailing duel between nations which can prove to be highly tactical. FINN With just one sail of 10.6m2 , this hotly contested men’s one-person heavyweight (sailor should be 92kg+) class has been an Olympic class since 1952. 2012 will see Ben Ainslie going for his 3rd consecutive gold medal in this class – this in addition to his silver medal in the Laser will make him the most decorated British athlete ever. LASER & LASER RADIAL With over 250,000 boats worldwide, this popular class is sailed single-handed and a great way to get into the sport. The Laser provides some highly competitive racing due to the very tight class restrictions which eliminate differences in hull, sails and other equipment. RS:X MEN & RS:X WOMEN The RS:X is a windsurf class, sailed separately in men’s & women’s classes with 9.5m sails and 8.5m sails respectively. RS:X sailing is highly physical, closely fought on trapezoid or slalom courses which is highly exhilarating to watch.

STAR The International Star is a heavy one-design sloop-rigged keelboat and has been in the games since 1932. With a very large mainsail (20.5 m2) and sailed by 2 large men who ‘hike’ very low off the windward side (see image).

2.4mR Resembling a mini 12-Meter yacht, the 2.4mR keelboat has the complexity of a sophisticated keelboat with the ﬁngertip feeling of a dinghy. Sailed single-handed, the helm sits deep inside the boat with all the trim controls within arms reach.

SONAR The Sonar showcased disabled sailing in 1996 and has since featured in every Paralympic games. It is sailed by 3 crew without spinnaker, instead a whisker pole is used to hold the jib out downwind.

SKUD The Skud 18 is a lead-assisted asymmetric skiff offering high performance sailing and enjoyed by able-bodied and disabled athletes alike. Under Paralympic class rules the two crew must sit on the centre line and controls may be modiﬁed to meet their needs.

The innovative, patented OutDry® lamination process bonds the waterproof and breathable membrane directly to the external layer of the boot, perfectly sealing any possible water entry point. This means goodbye to the air gap between traditional free ‘floating’ waterproof liners and outer shells and goodbye to the associated reverse breathability damp sensation. OutDry® is a more efficient waterproofing system because it is completely integrated within the footwear construction.

FOOTWEAR Following our partnership with the CAMPER campaign in the Volvo Ocean Race, it seemed logical to collaborate with Camper to create some shoes that are functional on a boat, yet stylish enough to wear on shore. Available in three styles; the team Replica Shoe in CAMPER red, the Race Shoe and the high-cut Race Bootie in black. Shoe uppers are fabricated from technical low absorption, quick dry fabrics with a full tricot internal sock for warmth. A PU midsole offers cushioning and on the underside and the rubber grooved outsole provides excellent traction and grip. Still going strong are our traditional boat shoes, in three styles; the classic Performance Deck Shoe, the trainer-style GP Race Shoe and the stylish Porto Cervo â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all of which feature the Gripdeck outsole for superior traction and lateral stability.
