KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD AND LOS LONELY BOYS GRAMMY-NOMINATED ARTISTS CO-HEADLINE THE PEARL CONCERT THEATER. Five-time Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum selling blues-rock guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd along with Grammyaward winning trio Los Lonely Boys are set to co-headline at The Pearl Concert Theater inside Palms Casino Resort on Aug. 1 at 8 p.m. Two decades into a recording career that began when he was 16, Kenny Wayne Shepherd has built an enviable resume as an accomplished recording artist, a riveting live performer, and one of the most talented and distinctive guitarists of his generation. He’s also emerged as one of the contemporary blues world’s leading lights, helping to spearhead a widespread revival of interest in the blues. Los Lonely Boys Hailing from San Angelo, Texas, Grammy-award winning sibling trio Los Lonely Boys, whose music draws from rock and blues, co-headline this amazing night of live music. The unique combination of musical styles is shaped by the band’s three brothers: guitarist Henry Garza, bassist JoJo Garza, and drummer Ringo Garza, Jr. Their newest album, “Revelation,” is a landmark release for the siblings. While maintaining the infectiously melodic mix of bluesy rock-n-roll and soul that’s long endeared Los Lonely Boys to its fiercely loyal fan base, “Revelation” adds an expansive range of new sonic elements.

GOLDEN NUGGET UNDER THE SUN TOUR

ICONIC LINEUP BRINGS CLASSIC HITS TO THE GOLDEN NUGGET IN LAS VEGAS. Relive the golden age of alternative pop rock-n-roll in The Grand Event Center at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino Friday, Aug. 8, with the iconic sounds of Blues Traveler, Sugar Ray, Uncle Kracker, and Smash Mouth. With numerous hit singles and chart-topping records between the all-star lineup, the Under the Sun Tour is set to be the party of the summer in downtown Las Vegas. “We are excited to bring the Under the Sun Tour to the Golden Nugget and give our customers the chance to see a spectacular combination of iconic bands from the ‘90s and 2000s,” says Amy Chasey, vice president of marketing and advertising at the Golden Nugget. 2013’s inaugural Under the Sun Tour was among last year’s most popular musical events in Las Vegas. It received critical acclaim from multiple outlets and Entertainment Weekly declared Under the Sun 2013 “the coolest tour of the summer.” Blues Traveler

BLUES TRAVELER

For nearly three decades, Blues Traveler has taken a wide array of musical styles, from pop, folk, and R&B to psychedelic soul and Southern rock, and transformed them into their own inimitable brand of free-spirited rock-n-roll.

SUGAR RAY Mark McGrath, best known as lead singer/songwriter for Sugar Ray, has a stunning string of hits, including “Someday,” “When It’s Over,” “Fly,” and “Every Morning.” McGrath and Sugar Ray proved worldwide fan favorites, with multiple multi-platinum albums, countless sold-out tours, innumerable TV appearances, and starring roles on the covers of Spin and Rolling Stone.

UNCLE KRACKER Initially known for his role as DJ in Kid Rock’s legendary Twisted Brown Trucker band, Uncle Kracker Sugar Ray soon staked his own claim for greatness via a unique stylistic synthesis of pop, rock, country, soul, blues, and doo-wop. The Detroit-based singer-songwriter made his stunning solo debut with his number-one hit “Follow Me,” kicking off a run of top 10 hits like “In A Little While,” “Smile,” and the record-setting cover of Dobie Gray’s classic “Drift Away.”

SMASH MOUTH With their indelible, organ-powered style, Smash Mouth has long provided the sun-dappled soundtrack to summertime fun. The Southern California-based group has earned sales exceeding 6 million albums in the US alone, fueled by a streak of unforgettable chart-topping hits including “Can’t Get Enough Of You, Baby,” “Then The Morning Comes,” “Walkin’ On The Sun,” and “All Star.” PLAN YOUR TRIP Under the Sun Tour Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino Aug. 8 goldennugget.com, 800-634-3454

HERSHEY’S CHOCOLATE WORLD DELECTABLE RETAIL EXPERIENCE SATISFIES SWEET TOOTHS. The Las Vegas Strip is a whole lot sweeter now that the Hershey’s Chocolate World retail experience has opened at New York-New York Hotel & Casino. The West Coast flagship store, which occupies two floors and boasts an eye-catching 74-foot high Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar that visitors can walk through, immerses guests in more than 800 candy and chocolate offerings, including iconic brands they love: Hershey’s, Hershey’s Kisses, Reese’s, Ice Breakers, Jolly Ranchers, Twizzlers, and more. The store, which covers 13,000-square-feet, brings two American icons to life—Hershey’s Chocolate and the New York City skyline—through custom chocolate sculptures of the Statue of Liberty, made of almost 800 pounds of pure Hershey’s Milk Chocolate, and the Empire State Building, made of 1,800 Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bars. Hershey’s Chocolate World invites you to create your own Hershey’s happiness through a variety of interactive experiences. Visitors can customize candy wrappers, choose their favorite Hershey’s Kisses and Jolly Ranchers flavors, and select their favorite Reese’s products based on their personal preference for more chocolate or more peanut butter. In addition, Hershey’s Chocolate World offers a variety of opportunities for guests to share their experience with friends and family via social media, including a video of them starring in their own Reese’s TV ad. Only two percent of American beef is outstanding enough to earn the coveted USDA Prime rating. Not only is our USDA Prime graded beef aged 28 days to ensure maximum flavor and tenderness, but our signature prime rib is slow roasted for up to 14 hours. Why do we go to such lengths? FIREWORKS AND STEAM CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY WITH NEVADA’S HISTORIC LOCOMOTIVES. B Y JERI C H ADWELL

NEVADA NORTHERN RAILWAY The Nevada Northern Railway in Ely runs special event trains pretty much every weekend, and the Fourth of July is no exception. The special Independence Day train departs at 6:30 p.m. and travels the Keystone Route toward Ruth before returning to make a stop at the White Pine Golf Course, where passengers are treated to an exceptional view of Ely’s fireworks display. Guests are welcome to view the fireworks from the train but can also bring lawn chairs and watch the display from the green. According to NNRY’s sales and marketing director, Dany Feinstein, the Fourth of July and the following weekend are a busy time in Ely, and it’s necessary to book train tickets and hotel rooms well in advance. Tickets for the train ride sell out every year, Feinstein says, adding that—as the date draws closer—hotel rooms also become difficult to find. “It’s a great way to celebrate the Fourth of July,” Feinstein says. “Ride on a steam engine, bring a lawn chair, and watch the fireworks.” Tickets are $32 for adults and $16 for children ages 4-12. Be sure to ask about applicable discounts too: military members, veterans, and AAA members are eligible to receive a 15 percent discount. Residents of Eureka and White Pine counties get a $6 discount.

<statewide> NEVADA STATE RAILROAD MUSEUM, CARSON CITY The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is showcasing several trains over the Fourth of July weekend, including the famous Inyo, the Virginia & Truckee No. 25, and the self-propelled McKeen car—the only restored and operating one of its kind in the world. Built in 1910, the NSRM’s McKeen car made its last run on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad in 1945. It was sold in 1946 and served for several years as a roadside diner before being repurposed as a plumbing supply store. The McKeen car was donated to the museum in 1996 and has since been fully restored and fitted with a modern diesel engine. A parade of the museum’s trains is scheduled for Friday, July 4, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Rides are available every 45 minutes between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The museum’s shop crew—comprised mostly of volunteers— has been busy getting the Inyo prepared to go under steam. Volunteer and engineer at the museum, Bill Kohler, explains that the train takes several weeks to prepare for operation because the shop crew must reattach several components of the locomotive that are removed for preservation purposes when the Inyo is on display inside the museum. “The Inyo is one of the oldest operating locomotives in the United States. It was built in 1875, and it’s kind of the baby of our locomotive fleet, and we kind of treat her with respect and dignity,” Kohler explains. “And with kid gloves as well because it is such an old artifact.” Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for museum members, and $5 for children ages 3-17. Tickets include unlimited train rides and entrance to the Jacobsen Interpretive Center—the museum’s main exhibit. Visitors can also purchase special merchandise honoring Nevada’s Sesquicentennial. The Warren Engine Company No. 1—an all-volunteer firefighting company that supports Carson City’s Fire Department—is selling refreshments during the event to raise funds for their organization.

RIDE THE RIVER POKER RUN BICYCLE EVENTS BRINGS SUMMER FUN TO RIVERWALK DISTRICT.

PLAN YOUR TRIP Ride the River Poker Run July 20 renoriver.org, 775-825-9255

The Riverwalk District in Reno offers beautiful scenery and cultural diversity to both locals and tourists, and on July 20 from 3-6 p.m., visitors to the district can enjoy a full day of fun during Ride The River Poker Run. Tyler Lunt, owner of Triumph Tattoo in Reno, created the 21-andover bicycle poker run to highlight some of the cool things Reno has to offer. Registration for the event includes entrance to the Tacoma Rainiers vs. Reno Aces baseball game after the ride; a voucher for a hot dog, chips, and a beer; a t-shirt co-branded with Reno eNVy and a poker run route map; and bike valet courtesy of the Reno Bike Project. Everyone from the cycle enthusiast to the occasional beach cruiser begins their journey at the Aces Ballpark and has three hours to enjoy a self-paced ride along the riverwalk to visit five or six of the 15 bike-friendly businesses. At each location the rider receives one custom-painted poker card by the artists at Triumph Tattoo. Participating businesses also have deals for cyclists at each stop. At the end of the race, riders return to the ballpark and submit their best poker hand for a chance to win a Riverwalk District-themed gift basket. Proceeds help fund scholarships for the Nevada Museum of Art Summer Youth art camps, the Reno Bike Project, and the Riverwalk District beautification program which oversees maintenance of landscaping and streets, installation of public art, support of public events, and promoting Downtown Reno as a cultural, safe, and family-friendly area. 28

THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS KICKS UP A STORM DISCOVERY CHILDREN’S MUSEUM BRINGS AN INTERACTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE TO LAS VEGAS.

Soaring above the earth on The Magic School Bus is a most exciting way to learn about the weather; and through Sept. 1, visitors to the DISCOVERY Children’s Museum in Las Vegas can do just that. Based on the popular Scholastic Entertainment books and television series, “The Magic School Bus Kicks Up a Storm” offers an interactive and exciting way to explore the water cycle and its relation to weather, and how influences from air, heat, water, and land combine to create weather. The exhibit has transformed The Magic School Bus into a flying weather observatory where different types of weather can be created, experienced, and measured. By visiting Ms. Frizzle’s Classroom and climbing aboard The Magic School Bus, children, parents, and teachers are immersed in the weather exhibit in a unique way. The exhibit features many interactive stations, including Ralphie’s Hot Air Balloon Race—a display that allows children to send miniature hot air balloons sailing over a heated surface—and the Walkerville Weather Center—an interpretive center that teaches children how to report the weather “live” through television or radio.
