Words and Music

Emotion Goes Where Energy Flows By John Milton Fogg

T

his issue focuses on the power of emotion, the right-brain instinctive or intuitive feelings we experience and express, as distinguished from left-brain reasoning or knowledge. Heart and head, music and words, both are important, but emotion tends to matter most, because it carries more energy. Take this sentence: I didn’t say she stole the money. The words (lyrics) are clear—until you add emotion (music). Now read the three sentences below, just emphasizing the bolded word. Notice what happens to the meaning of each sentence. I didn’t say she stole the money. I didn’t say she stole the money. I didn’t say she stole the money. Same words each time. Completely different meaning. That’s the music. That’s the power of adding feeling, because emotion goes where the energy is. “Ele,” I say to my 14-year-old daughter. “Please clean up your room.” “Yes, dad.” Words and music. The energy of emotion can go two ways. Negative emotion is focused on the problem, what’s wrong, fault-finding. It drains our energy. Positive emotion is focused on the ideal, what’s right, on seeking value. This increases our energy. Consider these two questions: What’s the worst thing that’s happened to you in the past five years? What’s the best thing that’s happened to you this week? I’ve done this demonstration with audiences around the world. As culturally diverse as people from America, Iceland, India, and Iran tend to be, the response is always the same. If you fully consider each question, without employing some positive-thinking coping mechanism, you’ll feel how the “worst thing” question saps your energy, while the “best thing” question builds your energy. Whether you favor the Bee Gees or Destiny’s Child, “It is just emotion that’s taken you over,” because that feeling awareness is where the power is—over mood, meaning, motivation, and all else. We all choose our words, on purpose and by design—as did the contributors to this issue. When you read their articles, listen for the music. Yes, you can do that through your eyes, as well as your ears: as you travel with Armand Puyolt along dirt roads, “leading with love”; as you walk in the early morning with Tom Chenault and discover his “secret weapon”; as Carrie Dickie blows you away with her story of transformation; as twins Adrianna Markowitz and Jennipher Hagenmayer uplift you with their “Sister Power.” Doug Firebaugh nails it, “Emotions are the power.” Energy. Words and music. n John Milton Fogg is founding editor of Networking Times.

rmand Puyolt is a legendary network marketing leader, expert, and consultant whose goal is to help as many people as possible raise their quality of life and create a better future. Having experienced severe lack in his childhood, Armand committed himself from an early age to building up his outer resources and inner resourcefulness as an entrepreneur. Thanks to the vehicle of network marketing, he was able to buy his first home at age 18, became a milliondollar earner at age 20, and a five-million-dollar earner at age 25. Armand has made it to the top of a dozen companies. At age 40, he earned an eight-figure income (in 2015) and has been the top income earner in his company for several years. Armand had to overcome many obstacles, including two serious car accidents, two major health crises, and even terminal illness. His tireless dedication to his family and team helped him beat the odds and fueled his passion to help those in need. Armand and his wife Esther live in Southern California with their six children between the ages of 12 and 24. Their business and family motto is #LeadWithLove.—J.G.

Humble Beginnings I was born in California to Mexican immigrants. My mom is from Tijuana, my dad from Mexico City. They got divorced when I was very young. My dad was doing well as a business owner. That’s where I got my business acumen. I chose to live with my mom—I couldn’t leave her alone—but I loved to visit my dad as often as I could to see how he grew his business. My mom worked hard to pay the rent and put food on the table, but finances were always tight. As a single mom she was my hero. She did what she could, but I knew there had to be a better way. These experiences drove me to learn about business. Whenever I had a chance, I would accompany my dad in his lunch truck, the kind you see on TV now. It would be my perfect day. My dad also had a videography business I used to assist him in on

the weekends. We did weddings and other events, and I loved to learn from him. Network marketing came to me out of a wham. At age 16, I already had a business, selling chocolate and candy out of my backpack in school. One day I took my mother to a home party she was invited to. It was a company that sold little knickknacks and crystals. Not fond of the product myself, I could see how the people in the room loved it. They picked up the pieces and saw them as collectors’ items, saying things like, “I don’t have this one,” “This is a rare one,” and “This one is a classic!” I immediately recognized a business opportunity that came with a built-in audience, since all these people were my mom’s friends and family. I thought, “If I can find out where to buy this product, I can get it at wholesale and sell it to them.”

TOM: I grew up in Littleton, Colorado, where I lived most of my life. I was not an extraordinary student, but I always knew I was going to do something really successful in my life. I don’t know how I knew that. My family was fairly ordinary although my older brother was extremely sick and ended up passing away at age 35. My other brother and sister are both wonderful and successful in their own way. But being the quintessential middle child I realized that I had to make my mark on the world completely independently. I got started in the restaurant business and learned to work hard there, like 24/7 hard. I was the boss of 103 people under the age of 18 whom you could not motivate with money, because they didn’t make a lot of money. So it all had to be positive energy. You learned how to smile while you were dying, and work when everybody else wasn’t. That really shaped my life for what I’m doing now. From there I became an airplane salesman, which exposed me to wealthy people and what their lives looked like. I was a successful salesman, but always felt I was sitting on the wrong side of the desk. I just had to figure out what the people on the other side of the desk did to accumulate enough money to buy an airplane, and then I was going to be set. That put me on the path to be a stockbroker. I became highly successful as that as well, but through all the careers I had, from the restaurant business to the airplane business to the stock brokering business, there was one common denominator: I was an extremely heavy drinker. Everybody else probably knew I was an alcoholic, but I didn’t. In 1988 I got two DUIs and two other citations for disturbing the peace in

arrie Dickie is a top earner in a thriving network marketing company, leading a growing team of mostly women in 11 countries. Once a shy little girl who never felt good enough, she made a long journey to reclaim her innocence, beauty, and power to light up the world. In 2008, even earning a million dollars with a previous company was not enough to fill the void Carrie felt inside. When her company and team fell apart, she finally hired a coach to help her jump the abyss from selfdoubt and self-loathing to self-love and selfconfidence. Today, having found “her inner woohoo,” Carrie is on a mission to empower others in and beyond her company to stand in their light, share their gifts, and live the life they were meant to live.—J.G.

May/June 2016

I was born in Denver, Colorado, in a two-parent family. My dad worked so many hours I rarely saw him. When I was five years old, my mom came to pick me up from Kindergarten, and the teacher said, “Carrie had a wonderful morning, but when we brought out John’s birthday cake around noon, she cried all afternoon and would not come out from the back of the room.” I just didn’t have what it took, at that time, to tell them it was my birthday too. I was extremely shy as a little girl. I remember in first grade learning about addition and being pretty good at it. When we moved to subtraction, that was a foreign concept to me—which made me very anxious. The teachers would say, “Carrie is a good student and gets good grades, but she cries whenever a new concept comes up on the board.” School was tough for me. I felt like I never knew how to wear my hair or how to dress. I didn’t know how to walk in the halls. I was extremely under-confident and let others define me all through grade school, junior high, and high school. Starting in high school and during college, I waited tables and bartended. I worked at many restaurants. Being a waitress taught me multitasking, and how to determine what was most important: I always made sure people had their condiments and their checks, because I didn’t want to keep anybody waiting. I knew when to connect with people and when to leave them alone. I learned how to assess and then meet their needs. I also taught fitness classes and worked as a personal trainer, which taught me how to motivate people.

Does It Take Money to Make Money? No, All You Need Are Your Five Currencies To build your business, it does not take money to make money. Instead, it takes an exchange in currency. After studying the lives of over 1,000 prominent entrepreneurs, I created Relationships to Riches™ which identifies the five currencies every entrepreneur can use to build his or her business. They are Mental Currency™, Emotional Currency™, Spiritual Currency™, Physical Currency™, and Financial Currency™. Society rewards you based on the currencies you exchange and the value you create. Top athletes, CEOs, inventors, actors, musicians, and entrepreneurs make millions a year when they exchange their currencies by creating value in the marketplace.

May/June 2016

Money follows Value. How do you create value in the marketplace to make money? You use your five currencies to solve other people’s problems. Oprah Winfrey exchanged her Emotional Currency with her audience to create billions. Warren Buffet exchanges Financial Currency through buying and selling companies. Jillian Michaels exchanges her Physical Currency through her DVDs and workouts. Deepak Chopra exchanges his Spiritual Currency through his radio show and books. Billionaire Elon Musk exchanges his Mental Currency through the development of his companies, from PayPal to Tesla Motors.
