I HAVE NEVER BEEN accused of being an outdoorsy person. Oh, I go outside: from the house to the car in the morning, then from the car to the office. Then I reverse that in the evening. Sometimes, if I’m feeling especially energetic, I’ll even venture across the vast expanse of the street outside our offices for a little lunchhour shoe shopping. But even though I may not be out doing all those wonderful activities for which our great state is famous, I do love when it’s finally warm enough to end a desk-bound day on the back deck with a nice glass of chilled Sauvignon Blanc, watching a glorious sunset. And I’ve always been of the mind that food tastes best when eaten out of doors. Our June/July issue celebrates good outdoor living by featuring plenty of lovely spaces for enjoying a glass of wine and a sunset, including our Landscape of the Year winner on page 48. Colorful furnishings and accessories (page 19) and cool, mod table settings (page 35) will inspire you to bring summer in. WHERE IT BEGAN The tranquil oasis that rests behind this Castle Pines Village home is a far cry from the landscape Courtney McRickard encountered when she first visited the site. “It was a very native landscape, with an existing water feature, that had gotten extremely messy over the years,” the landscape architect and principal at Denver-based Three Sixty Design recalls. Fortunately, the homeowners had some directives for bringing order to their overgrown backyard: “The design needed to be all about entertainment, exercise and appreciating the views,” McRickard says. To create good flow for mingling during parties, McRickard designed terraced forms that follow the contours of the site. “To accommodate groups of all

sizes, it was really important for us to create intimate spaces as well as larger ones,” she says. Our favorite “room” is one of the intimate nooks within a larger layout of gardens and hardscaped areas. Not only is the spot a chic gathering place for guests, it’s also functional—the wife exercises daily in a current pool (above, right) tucked inside the spa house (also envisioned by McRickard). Though not actually connected, spa house and main house appear to be true companions, drawing upon similar architectural lines and materials.
THE PROCESS Creating such an effortless space wasn’t all that easy; it took three years, with plans evolving from a simple pool to an elaborate landscape.

McRickard classifies the terrain as “an extremely sensitive site”—one that would require a careful design touch. Happily, that’s what her philosophy is all about. She used water in a smart, sparing way, keeping the depth of the pool shallow and using shiny glass tile near the steps to give the effect of more water than there actually is. Stone and soil weren’t hauled off during construction, but reincorporated into the new design. And native, low-maintenance plantings encircle the space.
PERFECT TOUCHES
A “floating” deck made of ipe wood promises a moment’s escape. In fact, McRickard likens the deck to an island you’d find in a Japanese garden. “You have these intimate spaces in Japanese gardens, these destination points that offer solitude.” Ipe, a Brazilian hardwood, was a natural choice for the platform; it’s resilient to the elements and “perfect for bare feet.” The understated furniture—all from Restoration Hardware and chosen by the homeowners—is the ideal companion to McRickard’s clean design. Simple lanterns prove that pretty accessories aren’t just reserved for interior spaces. And what about the views? Big to begin with, the surface of the pool makes them appear even grander. “When you’re in that space looking out from the main living area, you get this total extension of mountains and sky,” McRickard says.

THE BIG IDEA The owner of this Carbondale property wanted a whimsical treetop sanctuary where his kids could indulge their artistic fantasies, so he sought out architect Steve Novy and designer and craftsman David Rasmussen of Green Line Architects. Together the three dreamed up a retreat that feels organic and playful—for both children and adults.

DEFINING DETAILS Free from the practical constraints of most buildings, the structure “has very few right angles,” Rasmussen says. But it does borrow design elements from the main home: The rooflines are similar, as is some of the siding material. A window configuration on one wall is a riff on the windows in the main house. “We kept the language of design within the same family so that [the main house and the treehouse] look like they’re brothers or cousins,” Rasmussen says. “Obviously, the treehouse is the funky cousin.” And as you might expect from a treehouse, most of the materials are reclaimed and local. For example, the exterior is clad with a rough-sawn cedar from a local mill, which means it’s less processed, greener and a bit less polished, perfect for a home among the branches. 44

With interiors, you want to balance the “natural elements with manmade things to keep it interesting,” interior designer Robyn Scott says. “We felt we could bring in a few iconic pieces and mix styles in such a playful space.

Tips For Treehouse Lovers
No trees? No problem. The team at Green Line Architects constructed “trees” that would support the structure by driving steel rods through the centers of blowndown oak logs. No heavy excavation required—though you might enlist the help of a structural engineer. Get in the zone. Before you break ground (or branches) check with your county’s zoning board. Structures under a certain square footage can sometimes be constructed without a permit, but you want to be sure that you’re building within the rules. Go natural. It’s easy to find beautiful materials that are less processed, more eco-friendly—and far more charming than their polished counterparts.
FINISHING TOUCHES For CH&L’s photo shoot, interior designer Robyn Scott of Basalt-based Robyn Scott Interiors played up the structure’s extraordinary design with art and grown-up furnishings that balance the space’s organic style. “[The treehouse] is kind of like an art piece, so we brought in other art pieces,” she says. Take the chaise, for example. Called the LC4 Chaise Lounge, it was designed by Swiss modern architect Le Corbusier and is perhaps one of the modern era’s most recognizable shapes. The same goes for the Saarinen side table from Knoll. The crowning touch comes from equine-inspired artwork—some pieces in bright, bold colors and others in black and white—from local artist Summers Moore. The final design proves that treehouses aren’t just for youngsters. “Adults need to have places that are less serious, where you can see the frivolity or folly or fantasy of life,” Novy says. “We need places that inspire creativity. That’s why places like this are so important.”

YEAR “As in many of our gardens,” says landscape architect Kurt Culbertson, “the more manicured landscape is contained by buildings or within walls; beyond the walls the native landscape is recreated.” Horticultural displays are limited to the immediate foreground of the home and the entry so they don’t compete with the distant views.

IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE CONSTRUCTION ON Red Butte Ranch was completed just three years ago. The grounds that encircle the elegant, Craftsman-style Aspen home and its surrounding buildings are peppered with large Gambel oak, stands of aspen, and lichencovered boulders that make the whole compound feel established on the land. And this was precisely the goal of the project’s lead landscape architect, Kurt Culbertson. The building’s architect initially wanted to push the house to the edge of an escarpment that overlooks nearby Red Butte and Mt. Sopris, explains Culbertson, principal at Design Workshop, a nationally recognized landscape

architecture firm whose projects include Riverfront Park in Denver and the pedestrian mall in Aspen. Instead, Culbertson and his team suggested pulling the home back from the slope so the garden would become the foreground of the view, saving the existing trees and boulders and giving the yard a mature feel from the start. “Preservation of plant material is paramount—particularly the oaks, which are extremely slow-growing and difficult to transplant,” he says. This idea of working with what already exists plays neatly into Design Workshop’s central philosophy. Namely, that landscape projects should succeed on four points: environment, economy, aesthetics and community. At Red Butte Ranch, preserving the existing landscape tempered the environmental impact (native plants support wildlife habitat and require no energy to transport and install), supported the bottom line (there were less trees to buy and earth to move), and scored visually (you feel like you’re nestled into an idyllic mountain meadow).

Sculpted Spaces Landscape architect Kurt Culbertson digs up his best tips for placing art in your outdoor space. START WITH ART Art should be planned as part of the landscape from the outset of the design process. “By doing this, you avoid what is sometimes referred to as ‘plop art’—the sense that art pieces are added to the landscape without any sense of their context. Consider the artist’s intent and the characteristics of the artwork to aid in designing a suitable setting for the piece.” SEE THE BIG PICTURE When adding new pieces to your collection and landscape, consider: Is the artwork appropriately scaled to the space? Do materials and colors complement the landscape? Does the form of the piece support other design objectives? MAKE A MASTER PLAN If you already own pieces or know that you’ll collect pieces over time, think ahead to how you’ll integrate them. “We find it is very useful to prepare an ‘art master plan,’ indicating the best location for existing pieces and describing the location and characteristics of pieces that would be desirable to complement and accentuate the design.”

As for the design’s community impact, Culbertson explains it like this: Many mountain homes dominate the viewshed; that is not the case here. “One of the things that I am particularly pleased with in this project is that the residence enjoys magnificent views, but the home is almost invisible from the surrounding countryside,” he says. For plantings, Culbertson opted for a minimalist concept. The site is relatively shady because of the hill behind the home and the existing trees on the property. But where there is sun, there is a profusion of color, notably in the variety of perennial daylilies, which Culbertson chose because they are one of the longest-blooming and most reliable performers in the mountains. “You get this great punch of yellows and oranges in contrast to the [areas of] shade and filtered light elsewhere,” he explains. And in a departure from most modern landscape projects, Culbertson’s design avoids elaborate hardscaping (paving, walls, steps), incorporating instead a simple, elegant lawn. The lawn, in turn, provides the perfect setting for the owners’ robust sculpture collection, which includes works by sculptors James Croak, Tom Otterness and Jaume Plensa. When it comes to placing art in outdoor spaces, Culbertson says, it’s best to prepare an “art master plan,” which identifies where certain pieces might be placed, marking ideal locations for future installations. “The collector might then purchase artwork with a particular location in the garden in mind,” he says. Overall, the design is intentionally subdued. Traditionally, Craftsman-style homes were built as lakeside or mountain getaways with very simple landscapes, not elaborate gardens, explains Culbertson. “We’ve tried to be sensitive to that tradition rather than create a landscape that overwhelms the home.”

Serendipity in the City A fateful real estate find changes a Denver neighborhood and architect Chris Davis’s modern life

Perhaps it was destiny. When architect Chris Davis found a dilapidated house on a narrow lot in Denver’s mixed-use Highlands neighborhood, the structure was beyond repair. Still, the principal at BOSS Architecture was intrigued by the narrow 25-by-150-foot “shotgun” lot— and the community in which it resides. “Our firm is very invested in revitalizing urban areas of Denver,” Davis says, who works with fellow architect and business partner Kevin Stephenson at the Denver-based firm. “I was immediately attracted to the Highlands neighborhood, and this block in particular.” He put an offer on the property, and at the closing something else caught his eye—realtor Brighty Bradley, who would later become his wife. It didn’t take long for Davis, Bradley and Stephenson to begin conceptualizing plans for a new home on that fateful lot. “Many of the homes on our block were built in the late 1800s,” Davis says. “I was especially inspired by one 1870s Victorian brick square house in particular, and I decided to reinterpret the design in a new way with a context appropriate for the neighborhood in scale, material, size and color.” The team conceived a streamlined, efficient floor plan that was carefully designed to maximize space. Acting as a general contractor for the project, Davis hired Mallory Construction to

frame the 1,800-square-foot home, which includes three bedrooms, four bathrooms, an exercise room and office in the basement, a courtyard, and a two-car garage with a rooftop deck. For the new home’s exterior, Davis had hoped to duplicate the old orange pressed brick prevalent in the neighborhood, but he couldn’t find the quantity of salvaged brick he needed. So he got creative and applied new brick with the smooth back side facing out and the textured side facing in. To modernize the façade, Davis and Stephenson fabricated and installed a blackened hot-rolled steel balcony enclosure. “It’s a very simple, classic palette,” Davis says. Inside, an open living room flows into the kitchen and dining area. Stainless steel-and-lacquered-MDF cabinetry and stainless appliances merge to create a sleek wall that provides smart prep space as well as storage. In lieu of an island, Davis handcrafted a massive table of African mahogany. “That table is the heart of our home,” he says. “We cook there, eat there and work there.” Opposite the kitchen’s work wall stands a modern staircase. “The stairway is an element in the space that acts like a sculpture,” Davis says. The custom laminated-wood stair treads cantilever out of the wall, connected by exposed steel pipe

W I T H L I M I T E D S PAC E “It’s critical to have outdoor living space in a home,” says architect and homeowner Chris Davis, who created a private courtyard with comfortable seating, landscaping and a water feature, all within a 15-by20-foot rectangle. Here’s how you can follow his lead. Bigger isn’t necessarily better. The outside space should be proportional to the scale of the home. “In my opinion it’s worse to have a space that’s too large than one that’s too small,” Davis says. Create a palette of plantings. “We had mature ash trees and added two young catalpa trees; I like the contrast and juxtaposition,” Davis says. Potted plants and shrubs can fill in empty hardscaped areas. Create easy access. In Davis’s home, a pivot door swings wide open, blurring the boundaries between inside and out. “The courtyard is a nice amenity to have right off of the kitchen,” the architect says. Furnishings should be comfortable and inviting. Davis built the simple wood bench to fit the space and added two classic butterfly chairs for seating. Consider adding a water feature, such as a fountain. “An element of water is important,” Davis says. “It cools the space and creates a sound that muffles the noises of urban living.”

Family Interior decorator Ramey Caulkins knows how to mix treasured heirlooms, collected objects and new pieces to create a pretty yet livable home for her young family

The Caulkins’s formal living room may not be the hub of the home, but its easygoing elegance keeps it from being too prim and proper. “I didn’t want a room the kids couldn’t sit in,” says interior decorator and homeowner Ramey Caulkins, who believes that a home should be filled with treasures collected over time. Accents such as the green obelisks and white étagère came from her childhood home, the floral-upholstered chairs from a friend, and vintage lucite and rattan coffee tables were found on 1stdibs.com. After spending years in storage, a rug purchased during a trip to Santa Monica also found its place in the room. “My home is a wonderful combination of my childhood, my new life in Denver and my love of beautiful things.”

A new history
NEARLY TEN YEARS AGO, when Ramey Caulkins and her husband, Max, were newly married, a realtor friend who knew she liked to decorate showed her a home that was in the middle of a renovation. “They had run out of money, and we thought we would finish the remodel and flip it,” Caulkins says. But some zoning issues complicated that plan; at the same time, the house next door went up for sale. They decided to buy that house, scrape both and build a new home in which to raise a family. Insistent that the home shouldn’t “stick out as the new house on the block,” Caulkins and architects Scott Parker and Dean Lindsey of Denver-based Nest Architectural Design used the Colonial Revival style as a starting point. “We used many of the traditional architectural conventions and elements of the style,” says Parker, “then we played with the scale and proportion to bring it up to date.” The result is a grand home, but with a footprint that doesn’t fill the entire double lot (“a sure sign of many new homes,” Parker says), that keeps passersby guessing its age. “When others think our home is old,” says Caulkins, “I think, ‘Mission accomplished.’”
Welcome home
Traditional architectural flourishes and painted wood in the entryway speak to Caulkins’s east-coast upbringing. “I really love architectural elements; the mouldings and elegant details throughout the house were really important to me,” she says. So important, in fact, that instead of using plastic store-bought child-safety gates, Caulkin had gates built into the walls in the same style as the rest of the woodwork. “They’re so beautiful that we still have them although the kids are older.” Carpeting by Stark adds texture and softness to the stairs; a round, zebra-print rug from Gilt Groupe adds whimsy. During the holidays, the skirted table (which faces the formal living room) is replaced with the family Christmas tree.

Formerly the manager of hospitality sales for Ann Sacks, Caulkins knows a thing or two about tile. That expertise is apparent in the large, bright kitchen. “I knew I wanted a white kitchen, and after working in the tile and stone industry, I also knew I wanted a stone floor with radiant heat. The juxtaposition of the hard surface with the warm temperature is heaven.” Caulkins scored 5,000 square feet of the French limestone flooring tile after the shipment was rejected by Ann Sacks. Convincing the wholesaler that selling it to her at a deep discount was cheaper than sending it back, Caulkins had the whole lot shipped to Denver, where she stored it for more than two years. The installation was, in fact, worth the wait. “It looks amazing! I’ve never seen another stone this color.” Not surprisingly, the glass backsplash tiles and limestone slab countertops are also from Ann Sacks. “Limestone gets a bad rap,” Caulkins says, “but I think it’s the single greatest material for countertops. It can be repaired, buffed, cleaned and sealed. It’s very forgiving.” To add warmth, the decorator opted for wood to top the island. Inspired by the floor of a New York City restaurant, it is a slab of end-grain walnut. The formal dining room (opposite) is also a cornucopia of collected and custom pieces. “It started with the rug and evolved from there.” Rich, red grasscloth wallpaper from Schumacher covers the walls; the custom table, built by Martin Shea Millwork, can seat as many as 12. The custom chairs were painted green and upholstered with a playful Brunschwig & Fils leopard fabric.

“I love this room,” says Caulkins of the spot where parents and children gather at the end of the day, located just off the kitchen. The espresso-colored walls were inspired by one of Caulkins’s favorite designers, Sister Parish, who often used very dark or black paint. A wall of French doors lets in the southern light and keeps the space feeling fresh. Again, collected furnishings and accessories give this room charm and history. The raspberry-upholstered chairs were Caulkins’ grandmother’s; the lamp a serendipitous find in New York City. Prized possessions fill the bookshelves while kids’ toys and games are stored neatly in the cabinets beneath. Soft and colorful Moroccan poufs, Caulkins’s signature accessory, replace a coffee table. Splurges include a Stark rug and the striped sofa fabric. “Young families don’t have unlimited budgets, but rugs and sofas are where you should spend some money,” Caulkins attests. “The kids are always in here and we’ve had lots of parties; you can’t see a thing.” 71

Pretty spaces continue in the family’s bedrooms. Fouryear-old Eliza has a bedroom fit for a princess, with soft pastel walls and a charming mix of furnishings and accessories. “When you collect things over time, each piece has a story to tell,” Caulkins explains. The headboards, for example, were found on the side of the road by her mother, who then painted them. The chair is from her sister’s childhood bedroom, the lacquered mirror was her grandmother’s. And the vintage Baker dresser? “I found it in West Palm Beach and it remains exactly as I bought it.” The master suite includes a sitting room (opposite), perfect for bedtime stories and quiet moments. “I wish I used this room more,” Caulkins says. “There’s tons of light; it’s such a pretty room.” The terrarium, one of a pair picked up at an HW Home warehouse sale, provides the perfect space for orchids. A tribute to Caulkins’s love of tile, the clean, classic master bath focuses on texture rather than color. “To me, it has a classic European feel to it; it’s not traditional, but it’s timeless.” Ann Sacks tile graces the floor, tub surround and shower walls; Scalini Grigio tile adds interest to the shower floor.

ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS often talk about “bringing the outside in” to unify a home and its surroundings. But in his 1970s design tome, A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction, architect Christopher Alexander puts it another way: “Prepare to knit the inside of the building to the outside, by treating the edge between the two as a place in its own right, and making human details there.” Alexander’s iconic book—and the mindful design it proposes—inspired one Loveland couple to build a home that honors the landscape with quiet, spacious interiors, walls given over to large-scale windows and the family’s art collection, and well-appointed entertaining areas inside and out. 75

“We followed the book through the initial design of the home,” says Chuck Mayhugh of CRM Architects in Wellington, who has worked with the homeowners on various projects for more than 30 years. In response to Alexander’s belief that there are certain patterns in architecture and design that encourage human interaction, they structured the home in a modified “L” shape, with a guesthouse and studio on one side. This move formed an open-ended courtyard, which, according to Alexander, adds life to the structure and helps minimize the home’s grand scale. They also varied the ceiling height throughout the home to create more intimate settings for private spaces and airy, light-filled rooms for communal spaces—another Alexander tack. Inside, the focus is on the lakefront views, so much so that the home’s furnishings seem to serve as a backdrop—and that’s just what the homeowners and their

design team intended. “We were attempting to create viewing conditions where you could see through the interiors to the exterior,” says designer Judy Gubner, who collaborated closely with Mayhugh and the homeowners, with the help of her partner at Denver-based In-Site Design Group, Colleen Johnson. “Everything was designed with the views in mind.” In the main living space—which they call the “gathering room”—the design team settled on a muted palette of creams, tans and natural wood tones. They outfitted the room with a carefully edited selection of furniture that’s well proportioned so the interiors aren’t too busy. “The finished package is very monochromatic and quiet, to allow the views—and the art— to dominate the space,” Gubner says. To create inviting outdoor spaces, the homeowners worked with Loveland-based landscape architect David Beadle to erect a dry-stacked stone wall and
lengthy trellis, plant a bed of wildflowers and welltended vegetable patch, and set up comfortable, conversational seating areas. These elements also circle back to Alexander’s philosophy in A Pattern Language, where the architect suggests you “build outdoor details to finish the outdoors as fully as the indoor spaces.” The finished result is a home that melds interior and exterior living spaces, knitting inside and outside together by blurring the edge between the two. Christopher Alexander just might approve.

Buying raw land? Ask the right questions BY PATRICK SORAN
WHEN PEOPLE DECIDE TO buy raw land for the house of their dreams, one of the first questions is often, “How raw is raw?” For some, a couple of acres on the edge of town fits the bill. Others want acres upon acres of untouched wilderness miles from nowhere. “There’s ‘out there’ and there’s ‘way out there,’” says Joseph “Joey” Burns, real estate broker and owner of the Lone Eagle Land Brokerage in Montrose. Burns has had clients who insisted they wanted to be “way, way away” only to watch them start fidgeting as soon as they ventured past the last gas station in town. “Most people who buy raw land don’t want to be too far from a few restaurants and a movie theater.”
In other words, buyers might want something closer to town that has already been subdivided. Luckily, Colorado has dozens, maybe hundreds, of such developments all over the state. How much individual lots cost in those developments has a lot to do with access to the “ings,” says Burns—skiing, fishing, hunting, biking, hiking, four-wheeling or allterraining. “The closer you get to the more desirable activities, the higher the price.” Cost is also affected by the view, the level of infrastructure provided and the lay of the land itself. Warm, sunny, south-facing sites may command nearly twice the cost per acre as land on a cooler, wetter north-facing slope. Indeed,
location is everything. While 35 acres near Colorado City might run $35,000, that same acreage 25 miles outside of Steamboat Springs could cost $170,000. Place that parcel 15 minutes north of Edwards and you’re in for almost $6 million. If location is king then infrastructure is queen. No matter the land’s size, price or locale there are a number of questions to ask. Is the access road dirt, gravel or paved, and who maintains it, the county or the homeowners? Is the electricity above or below ground? Is there a water line? (Drilling can be an expensive and unpredictable proposition.) What about a sewer? (Only rarely is a sewer line provided, so a septic system is a must.) Where

will the septic system go? Tank or leech field? What do both cost? Realtors, the subdivision developer and county planning departments can provide much of that information, though those answers often lead to ever more questions. Will the lay of the land support the dreamed-of design, such as a walkout basement? And what about covenants and restrictions imposed by the association? Most developments have very defined guidelines
regarding the maximum and minimum size of the house, the style of design, the materials used and even the placement on the property. Is there any chance your neighbor can put a mobile home or four-story monstrosity smack dab in the middle of his lot, destroying your view? And can you store your boat and RV in the driveway? Questions, questions, questions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Before you buy,â&#x20AC;? Burns advises, â&#x20AC;&#x153;get the answers.â&#x20AC;?

INFILL NOT EVERYONE LOOKING FOR LAND buys outside the city limits; some want to build their dream house in the heart of town. “Many people prefer the diversity and amenities of in-town living,” says William Moore, AIA, who as President of Denver-based Sprocket Design Build has guided individuals and developers through the sometimes-complicated process of buying vacant land near the city center. He shares some urban-infill caveats to keep in mind: Many great older neighborhoods have lots sized to accommodate 1,800-square-foot homes, while some homeowners may want larger dwellings. You and your architect will need to work with neighbors and city agencies to obtain any required zoning variances.

Understand that historically-designated neighborhoods add another layer of restrictions and planning to wade through. Utilities are usually easily available, but be sure to account for the time it takes for service providers to connect them. Only seldom are upgraded electrical, gas, sewer or water required. The upside? “Buying urban land lets you not only build custom, it gives you a unique opportunity to add to the fabric of the city,” Moore says.

10 things you should know about
urban gardening

From pot to plot. Whether it’s tomatoes in a balcony container or a flower garden on a median strip, urban gardening is practiced by people with limited space and unlimited creativity. A growth industry. Urban gardening has been on the rise in Denver since the 1980s, according to Abbie Harris of Denver Urban Gardens (DUG; dug.org), a nonprofit whose mission is to build and support community plots throughout Denver. “The year we started [2004], we helped build three gardens,” Harris says. “This year we’re at twenty.” Why the upswing? “Interest in urban gardening often goes up when the country is in a recession,” says Diane Stahl, owner of Urban Roots, a Denver shop that focuses on the needs of small-space gardeners. And these small plots can be mighty: A 10-by-10-foot plot can feed a family for a summer. Add to that canning, and you have food for most of the year. Research says... According to a study conducted by the Colorado School of Public Health and Urban Roots, people

who maintain urban gardens eat more healthfully, are more active and feel a greater sense of community. (Go to urbanrootsdenver.com to see the study.) Grow locally, eat locally. In the wake of books like Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma and films like Food, Inc., many people are seeking less processed fare that is grown closer to home. Urban gardening, which fulfills both missions, is the ultimate green activity, Stahl says. Before you get dirty. You have to know your microclimate, which isn’t necessarily the same as your neighbor’s. Does your plot get sun? How’s the drainage? Are there big shade trees nearby? How close is it to asphalt and concrete? Dig into it. Soil testing is critical for any kind of gardening. Colorado State University offers a test kit—just put a square of soil in the bag and mail it to CSU for an analysis. Get yours at soiltestinglab.colostate.edu.

Think outside the plot. Want bees or chickens? DUG has beekeeping guidelines at dug.org for home honey producers, and new chicken guidelines were piloted at a community garden at Park Hill Elementary School last fall. (If you live outside Denver, check your municipality’s laws regarding food production.) Read a little first. According to Stahl, the best books to read before starting a garden in Denver are Durable Plants for the Garden (produced by CSU, Denver Botanic Gardens and Green Industries of Colorado) and The Colorado Gardener’s Guide by John Cretti. Batter up. When you can’t unload your giant zucchinis at season’s end, do what the expert gardeners do: Invite friends over for an afternoon of zucchini whiffleball. After all, when zucchinis are over 12 inches long, they’re too watery for good eats—so bat away!
