hen I reflect on this month’s topic – ‘women’s well-being’, and read all the articles from our contributors, I’m reminded of all the stages and phases of our lives as women. Our first period can be a rite of passage, yet there are still so many aspects of growing into womanhood and our connection can grow way deeper with ourselves and others right through menopause and beyond if we so choose. An ongoing conversation I have with my fellow women friends, my soul sistas, is the challenge around desiring to give to others, while creating meaningful connections and not feeling depleted in the process. We do this by acknowledging

our caring, kind nature and directing care towards ourselves as well. Sometimes it’s about saying ‘no’ to requests and saying ‘yes’ to that cup of tea on our own for 20 minutes, or that hot bath with essential oils when the body is aching and the days have been long (or insert here whatever is fun or nurturing for you). How do we keep that commitment to ourselves and support each other to do that? It’s actually more than just self-care. It’s self-care with a desire to break out of the old roles and create the life that is truly authentic to our spirit. What it means to be a woman, is unique to each of us and yet there are commonalties too. We don’t have to accept a role for ourselves defined by Hollywood movies, or the media, we are way more than that! And what if our wellbeing is enhanced by not having to define ourselves, instead, we can just be it!

Raw Spaghetti with Sea Kelp and Cashew Cream Sauce RECIPE KRISTINE MATHESON

Serves 2-4 PASTA 2 large zucchinis ½ cup of kelp noodles Wash, peel and cut zucchini into half lengthways; place each piece into the spiralizer using fine spaghetti setting. Turn handle until spaghetti is formed, repeat for each piece and then place in a large bowl. Wash and soak kelp noodles for half an hour. When sauce is made massage some into the noodles. Combine with spaghetti and set aside.

1½ cups button mushrooms finely sliced 6 cherry tomatoes chopped in half ¼ cup olive oil 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar Finely slice mushrooms and place in a flat dish together with diced sundried tomatoes and cherry tomatoes. Combine oil and vinegar, toss with mushrooms and tomatoes, set aside.

1-2 garlic cloves ¼ cup lemon juice 1 tsp Celtic or Himalayan salt Place all ingredients in blender until creamy and then pour ingredients onto spaghetti, toss gently.

PESTO 2 cups pine nuts 3 bunches basil leaves 2 cloves garlic ¼ cup olive oil 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp Celtic or sea salt Place all ingredients in food processor, blend until smooth.

MARINATED SPINACH AND ONION 2 cups silverbeet 1 small red onion finely diced ½ tbsp olive oil ½ tsp Italian herbs 1/8 tsp Celtic or Himalayan salt Heaps of fresh basil Remove white centre of silverbeet then cut into ribbon strips. Add onions. Place in a bowl with oil, herbs and salt. Massage spinach until it wilts. Set aside until needed.

Final step: You can serve this dish cold or warmed in winter. As this dish needs to stay raw, it is important to either use a dehydrator to warm through for about 1 hour. Or set oven at around 43°C for three-quarters of an hour. You can also add a raw vegan Parmesan cheese on top.

HOW GUT MICROBES INFLUENCE YOUR ESTROGEN LEVELS You probably know that the bacteria in your gut is responsible in many ways for maintaining your overall health. However you probably didn’t know that a certain set of your gut bacteria – known as the estrobolome – is responsible for one very important hormonal function in the female body; and that is, metabolising estrogen. Do you bloat and get uncomfortable cramping around that time of the month? Bloating is usually the first sign that your estrobolome might be imbalanced. Zucchini and Carrot Bites RECIPE THE MERRYMAKER SISTERS

Serves 4 Prep Time: 10 mins. Cook Time: 25 mins. Total Time: 35 mins. Ingredients: 2 medium zucchinis grated 1 carrot peeled and grated 1 shallot sliced 2 tbsp fresh coriander chopped 2 eggs whisked Salt and pepper ¼ cup coconut flour

Method: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking tray with baking paper. Squeeze out the excess juice from the grated zucchini and carrot with a tea towel. Mix the zucchini, carrot, shallot and coriander in a large bowl. Add the eggs, salt and pepper and mix until combined. Sift the coconut flour into the mix and stir. Take spoonfuls of the mixture and roll into bite sized balls.

How to avoid

health bankruptcy

I

like to look at ‘day-to-day experiences’ as either deposits or withdrawals into our ‘wellness bank account’. Any positive health contribution like a walk in the sunshine, freshly squeezed juice, leafy green salads, and breathing deeply with awareness, is a form of positive currency. As we make these healthy deposits, we must be mindful of the withdrawals that can force us into ‘health bankruptcy’. What do they look like, and how often do they show up in a day? Suffering from stress, late nights, not getting enough quality sleep, eating too many cooked or denatured meals, spending too much time in front of a computer, feeling bitter or resentful, not living passionately or purposefully, can trigger the withdrawals I’m talking about. Without question, these negative emotions or physical experiences will take a significant toll on your ‘wellness account’. I know this for a fact, as I have experienced health bankruptcy at one time or another. Here’s the good news: by carefully

analysing your daily wellness deposits you can change the balance. When people come to see me, I don’t beat them up for their dietary or lifestyle indiscretions, especially when I find out they are proactive in other ways like exercising or enjoying a laugh, not taking themselves too seriously and thinking outside the box. When I see the openness of my client, I know this person is going to have a magnificent wellness account. No fees attached! At our Lifestyle Reset Retreats we go into this more deeply. Just like there are all sorts of monetary bank accounts, there are also different ‘wellness accounts’. Some of our wellness accounts will require constant monitoring, others are a bit like term deposits – ‘quiet, regular lifestyle activities’ that don’t even require measurement which are stored away in these term deposits. Withdrawals: Never going outside, coffee with milk and sugar, reheated meals, shallow breathing, hunching over a desk, feeling resentful, frowning – holding dull expression, giving up, holding space for stress to live!, medication / drugs / pain killers, hating, no adventure, not drinking water, eating food with seeds removed and denatured, no protection to EMFs, nothing to look forward to, limited low frequency thinking, not having a clue what gut-friendly food is! www.anneclark.com.au www.lifestylereset.com.au

affect your hormones?

W

hen it comes to improving hormones, certain nutrientrich foods are the key for balancing hormones such as progesterone and oestrogen. Eating wholefoods and decreasing processed foods help to increase the nutrient density of food, provide the building blocks to hormones and reduce inflammation. The liver and the digestive system also play a key role to ensure that the body does not wind up with too much of the circulating hormones. When either the liver or the bowel are not working properly, oestrogens that need to be excreted are sometimes recycled and reabsorbed into the bloodstream, which can lead to an accumulation of excess oestrogen. Most people don’t realise that the human body produces and needs not just one, but many kinds of oestrogens. As naturopaths we look at the balance between Estrone (E1), Estradiol (E2), Estriol (E3). Oestrogen is responsible in the body for making everything grow, including the lining of the uterus

to prepare for pregnancy, promotes the growth of the egg and the foetus. Following menopause, oestrogen remains important for cell growth and renewal; when it is lacking, renewal suffers in skin, hair, bones, and nerve cells. 3 Progesterone is an essential hormone throughout all life stages, it is responsible for sustaining a healthy pregnancy, boosting memory and concentration, preventing heavy periods, and helping us achieve restorative sleep. So what foods do you need for healthy hormones? The first step is to ensure your diet is full of nutrient-rich foods so your body is obtaining the key nutrients needed for hormonal health. • Cruciferous vegetables have a high level of phytochemicals that help support phase 2 liver detoxification. Include at least 1 cup/day of cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale, Chinese vegetables, or Brussels sprouts. • Dark leafy greens – kale is an excellent source of fibre, which feeds your good gut bacteria. Research

Mind over matter – 3 steps to mastering your mind-body connection WORDS DR HEIDI HERON, PsyD

W

hen you are nervous, have a headache, or overcome with tiredness, does this start in the head or start in the body? We all are aware to some degree, the mind and body are connected and effect each other. But to what extent? As a Doctor of Clinical Psychology, I work with people as both a coach and therapist on a variety of topics, and most come back to the mind-body connection. While our mind creates and transmits chemicals, the body holds and stores these chemicals. From a psychological standpoint, most illnesses, dis-ease and discomfort are a factor of psychosomatic triggers – which is an illness or other condition caused or aggravated by internal conflict or stress. This doesn’t mean you have made something up, but it means you can use the mind to influence the body, and use the body to influence the mind. After all, you are in charge

of your mind and the following tips will help you master the connection and relationship between your mind and your body. 1. Awareness of your body. Each day, take 5 minutes in the morning and at night to sit in silence and tune into your body. Notice sensations of discomfort, pain, emotions and energy within you. For each sensation you notice, imagine a shape or symbol for it; let your imagination play! What is the colour of the discomfort? Is there a size or shape? Does it have any weight, temperature or texture? Notice it in detail. Being able to become more aware of our body sensations at this level will help us to become more aware when something is out of place or not right. 2. Identify positive intention. Every behaviour or symptom we have, has a positive intention. When you are aware of the sensations in your body

and you are able to personify it into a symbol or shape – give it a voice, the ability to communicate and ask it what its highest intention is for you. We can very often find the meaning of a sensation by simply paying attention to it. The moment we then give our bodies what we need, the sensation dissipates. 3. Treat yourself kindly. What do you do for yourself on a regular basis? Let you mind-body connection have time to check in with each other when neither have to be ‘busy’. Often, when we give our mind-body time to relax, the connection between them has time to heal and rejuvenate allowing us more health, vibrancy and energy. any times, I have been interviewed on radio, podcasts, TV and other forms of media and I am always asked the same question as a nurse and medical intuitive, “Jean what is the biggest cure for health? And what would be the biggest disease women have?” In a nutshell my answer for ‘treatment’ is absolute love! The biggest disease would be not loving self and the side effects are: cancer, heart attack, leaky gut syndrome, and every disease known to humans. I witnessed this in my mother. I was 16 years old when my 43-yearold mother died on Christmas day of liver and colon cancer. I could see the anatomy and physiology inside her body and knew what she needed but the medical staff could not understand what I was saying. How do you explain that your mother was desperate for absolute love for herself and from people around her and that would ‘cure’ her? How does a child, or in this case a teenager, teach the medical system that the cure or the ‘magic pill’ is love for physical, mental and emotional disease?

I use the word cure very lightly as I don’t believe in curing. I believe and know in healing. To cure is to alleviate immediate pain but to heal is to make the person whole, like they were once created and born. When we are born, we know what true love is. When the mind and body are in a state of absolute love there is no pain, loss or disease. There is no emotional anatomy which creates disease.

My biggest dream, passion and legacy is to have the medical and educational systems know that if you give, offer and share and receive absolute love and breathe, eat, drink absolute love, we will banish disease. This is quantum law. Let’s stop going against the universal law and make the new law of absolute love everywhere. Each and every day say to yourself, ‘I AM, love, loved, loving and loveable’ and let’s banish disease.

alancing our inner masculine and feminine energies is important as they largely influence our life and relationships. Whilst we may typically think that the source of energy for a male is the masculine energy and the source energy for a female is the feminine energy, your energy field is a fusion of the divine masculine and feminine spirit. Many energetic blocks are hidden aspects that lead back to a lack of, or imbalance between these energies. To explore your inner relationship with the masculine and feminine and the balance of the energies within you, you need to look at how you originally perceived these divine energies through those that were around you in your early years, such as your parents. Our early experiences with males and females largely influence our inner programming around gender-specific behaviours and roles. Therefore, they are the greatest influence over how we personally identify and connect with the divine masculine and feminine energies within. These experiences and

perceptions determine our personal attitude towards our own and the other gender. Here are some common examples of how our inner masculine and feminine energies are lacking and become unbalanced due to earlier influencers such as our parents: • Absent fathers – if you had a physically or emotionally missing father, the missing masculine energy will make it difficult to develop a trusting, loving, and secure inner connection with your own masculinity if you are male; (and vice versa if you are female and had an absent mother). As a result of this single-sided upbringing, you are likely to fantasise about the absent energy, leading to an idealised, and often unobtainable version of a man or woman. This blocks you in your love life, as you have an unreal expectation of yourself and the other gender. • Controlling mothers – you may have had an overbearing, hyper-critical or controlling mother. In this case, you would have experienced femininity

as controlling, never satisfied and maybe manipulating. This then makes it hard for you to embrace your inner femininity (vice versa in the case of a controlling father). If you are a female, you may rebel against your feminine energy by favouring your masculine, or reject your femininity altogether. Some women may connect love with control and repeat their mother’s patterns. Generally men will respond to this by trying to comply out of fear and develop people-pleasing and co-dependent patterns; or repress their anger; developing mistrust and resentment towards the feminine. We can all build our own balanced connection with masculinity and femininity, free of parental programs. To do this, we must seek to actively connect to our most pure inner masculine and feminine energies – ones that are from the divine source – not the males and females we have tied these energies to. www.highvibrationcity.com

creativity was more than painting and drawing!

M

y Southern African upbringing was vibrant, eclectic and sometimes unstable. Living alongside many different cultures and witnessing their diverse qualities of life, made me deeply curious about people, especially women, surviving in a harsh and mostly male-dominated world. What they taught me, was their capacity to embrace and live a creative life. Creativity is a powerful way to begin to explore well-being in your life, to see a different way of ‘being’ and ‘doing’ even when you have very little. Connecting to our creative self, means the ability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden patterns, to make connections between seemingly unrelated experiences, solve problems and to generate solutions. It means taking risks, ignoring doubt and facing fears… our self-doubt and fears being one of the biggest causes of dis-ease in our mind, body and soul.

Many of us believe we are not creative but we do it every day, i.e. cooking, decorating, gardening and our clothing. The greatest misconception is that creativity is related to how well we can paint or draw. As an art therapist, I am on a mission to dispel this myth and help people surrender to and connect more to their creative self; to let go of expectation and judgment and striving for the perfect end result which is often swathed in stress. In art therapy, we surrender to the creative process, freeing our mind to make sense of, heal and let go of the pain of past experiences without the use of words. It is also a place to melt into the softness of your heart, where you can safely ‘see’ what lies within, a wellspring, the ‘knowing’ of what is right for you to re-discover a natural state of wellbeing. Creative explorations reveal new perspectives, and possibilities arise to transform old patterns of behaviour

that no longer serve us. Exciting doors are opened that we didn’t even know were there, inspiring personal growth and healthier choices that align with our truth, values and authentic personal expression. As clients explore their artwork, I am so privileged to witness their surprise, “I came here feeling confused, controlled and scared and now I’m feeling flowy, more balanced and free… I have stopped holding on so tightly and have less anxiety in my chest.” From my own personal journey, I believe self-acceptance and self-love are the source of well-being, which is why so many people who live with so little have the ability to create a meaningful and happy life. aving just come through a huge energetic portal which has opened us up to another level of connecting to our personal potential, we now look ahead for the rest of this year. The year 2020 has always been a benchmark, or reference point for a huge awakening, a global shift in consciousness. Right now, we are in deeper preparations, whether aware of it or not, life keeps showing us which parts of our human and soul experience is requiring our devoted attention. Between now and the end of 2019, we are being called to be more truthful with ourselves, question everything, find more space for us to be, take better care and nurturing of self, release more clutter from the mind, physicality, emotional and spiritual aspects, to honestly look at our feelings and what we are willing to create. One of the big players in our everyday lives are the beliefs we are living, whether conscious or

subconscious, known or unknown. We are in accelerated times to discern what aligns and works for and what no longer serves us, with absolute clarity. So, a question to ask yourself that may help when working with your beliefs to clarify whether they are aligned or not is: Are my beliefs building bridges to the life I want, or are they bombs, waiting to go off? This question really helps you look at the habits and perceptions that may stop your expanding heart and soul from trying new things, choosing different directions, or recreating scenarios that never end the way you desire. Beliefs are inherited, installed and instilled in us from before birth, some are in our DNA, some are ‘influences’ that our soul has resonance with. We can be a victim to the beliefs we have playing out, which means we are blowing ourselves up, the bombs keep going off, or we can diffuse the bombs, create a new more aligned belief and

start building the bridge towards the life we want. For example, you may have a belief that ‘change is really hard and messy’. You need to ask yourself, “Is this true for me?”, “Where did it come from?” Perhaps you had a parent who was resistant to change, and you have absorbed their belief. To shift it up, here is a mindfulness exercise, something you need to repeat, feel and know… so it could be, “Change is a learning curve that opens me to more opportunities”. Straight away there is an expansive nature, offering a better outcome, space to grow and a new belief that becomes a bridge-building belief. As we face the rest of this year, it is important to listen to your inner world, keep lifting the calibre of your thoughts, feelings, actions and words, as we are laying the foundations and building the bridge towards a huge consciousness shift next year. www.raelenebyrne.com

magine your life is like a big jigsaw puzzle, with the pieces having labels such as: health, happiness, love, family, relationships, spirituality, friendship, peace of mind, financial freedom, harmony, fun, adventure, laughter – the list could go on and on. Whilst most of us strive to have all the pieces together, if we are honest, perhaps some of the pieces may be missing or are a bit ratty around the edges? We live in a very fast-paced and busy world and we often go through the motions of day-to-day life and somehow, another week, month, year goes by and we question ourselves, “What did we achieve?” As the theme for this month’s article is women’s well-being, I would like to share thoughts about a topic that is dear to my heart. In my long financial planning career, I have seen many women (and men too) who struggle to get a grip on their financial wellbeing. They may have every aspect of their lives on track, but go off the rails when it comes to money. It tends to slip

through their fingers or they delegate the running of the household to their partner. The sad thing is, when the partner is no longer there, through divorce or death, they not only have the emotional pain, loss and sadness to deal with, they also have no idea what to do about the financial aspects of life. Recently I saw a new client who had been procrastinating for three years before taking the big step (in her mind) of taking ownership of her financial situation and asking for help and direction. At the end of our first meeting, I could visibly see the load lifting from her shoulders. Her body language changed from defeat and being overwhelmed, to sitting up straighter and leaning in to listen more closely. She actually made me laugh, as half an hour into the meeting she commented, “I don’t actually feel sick and I thought I would.” I guess for many, seeing a financial planner may have the same fear as a visit to the dentist.

If the business isn’t bringing money in, it’s not saying you’re a failure, it’s just saying look at something differently, it might be one little thing. writing her first book for fear of being exposed and sharing very intimate and personal experiences, but she knew it was time to do it, and once she made the decision there was no turning back, she penned it in just 30 days! “As soon as I made that jump, (I believe in the law of attraction), all these people, things and situations were there to support me, from publishers and team members, and putting it up on Amazon. I didn’t have to do anything. All I had to do was do what I’m good at, which is writing. So I’ve always written, always written for magazines and blogs and other people. I just had to write, so I was resisting my natural gift, writing.” The rewards have been immeasurable for her business, and for the impact her books make on others. “Now instead of getting limited by fear, I’m so furiously passionate about getting this out. It’s my service, my duty.” Jean is a prolific goal-setter and her mind works fast and furious. She has multiple projects at any given time, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Ultimately, her drive comes from a deep desire to be of service. This desire led her to create the first global Medical Intuitive Training to assist others who want to help people and be recognised for their gifts and talents. feel like absolute crap’. Even whilst I was eating badly, I was so conscious of why I was emotional, moody, etcetera. My business was incredibly affected, where the income completely dropped. And that’s the law of attraction for me; if you want to invest in yourself, then it affects your income as well. As soon as I cleaned up my food and my exercise patterns, income skyrocketed back up again. The more that I invest in me, the more people say, ‘I want what you’ve got.’ You exude this love bubble and so people say, ‘I want that, I want that’.” An essential element of Jean’s philosophy is that every win and every achievement is acknowledged and celebrated. “My celebration is not always with materialistic things. My celebration… because I’m in the public eye so much now, is having the dog and walking along the beach. It’s my time and nobody else is around. And also time with my adult sons, when they want to go for a walk with me or go food shopping or whatever because they don’t live at home, that’s a celebration. Just that intimate time with family and the dog, that’s massive. With each book, I’ve always bought myself a piece of jewellery. But the celebration with that is, ‘Yeah, let me just go reflect, be by myself.’ And being with my sons and my dog is a gift, they’re the ones that say, ‘Oh my God, I love you. ur passage into womanhood starts on the first day of our first cycle but the journey isn’t always a pleasant one, with many suffering from irregular periods, heavy bleeding and extreme pain. Many women suffer in silence thinking it is normal or not knowing what could be done to help rebalance the cycle. Every woman should enjoy a stress-free monthly cycle. A woman’s regular cycle is 28 days, this can vary slightly either side of the 28 days. An irregular cycle is when the cycle is different each month or you miss months completely. There can be several causes, the most common being hormonal imbalances, stress, extreme weight loss and extreme emotion. T

here comes a time when we experience new beginnings and suddenly a new goal is clear. When well-being is that goal, we require specific methods for attaining it. The speed by which this goal can be reached depends on one thing alone – the willingness to practise and be disciplined. The new frontier of frequency technologies will assist the speed by which well-being is experienced. There are tools and techniques that can be applied to enhance the work being done via these technologies. Everyone can make them habits so we can lift ourselves out of pain and fear. Each step towards well-being helps, although in this new beginning, the methods are new. At first the methods are more ideas than a lifestyle; yet they will become the new rules of thought and eventually the rules by which we live.

Well-being begins in the mind with our choices. Choices are continuous; we do not always realise when we are making them. With practice in our choices, a set begins to form which sees us through the rest. We do not need to become preoccupied with every choice or step we take. A specific method applied upon waking, adopted consciously will support our goal with more ease. Upon waking, think about the kind of day you desire, the feelings you would like to have, the things you want to have happen to you, and the things you would like to experience. Hold the thought: ‘today you will make no choices by yourself’. The day will be given to you by the part of your mind that created the thought of the kind of day you would like to have. This means you will not judge the situations where choices need to be made. Judgment of any situation contradicts the goal of

well-being. Throughout the day, any time you think of it, or have a quiet moment, remind yourself of the kind of day you would like to experience. Eventually a point is reached where it is easier to have a happy day if you prevent unhappiness from entering. This takes practice. Your day is formed by how you make your choices – choices made with the right mind expressing the kind of day you desire, or choices made from judgment. When choices are made from judgment, unhappiness is experienced. Begin change: make the choice that you do not like what you feel now. That is a first step – having the awareness you do not like the way you feel; acknowledge you may have been wrong and choose another way to look at the situation. Metabolic syndrome

– a symptom of collective

M

etabolic syndrome is the name for a group of conditions that all share a common cause. The shared cause is known as insulin resistance and it is also considered that the accumulation of fatty tissue in the body’s midsection is a contributory factor. These conditions include obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, imbalanced blood lipids (including high serum triglycerides and lowered HDL cholesterol), polycystic ovarian syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. There are actually many more conditions that are probably linked to metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. This group of conditions is a huge worldwide public health problem. In 2000, the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle study (AusDiab) came up with the not-so-surprising result that around 19% of adult Australians meet the criteria for diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. In 2014-15 it was estimated that around 6% of Australian adults had full-blown diabetes, which is mainly

type 2 diabetes. Probably out of every four diagnosed diabetics, there is an undiagnosed diabetic floating around. Even more concerning is the rising prevalence of these conditions. The prevalence of diabetes in Australia has tripled over the last 15 years. There is a 40% increase in the incidence of obese adults over the last 20 years in Australia. This trend is showing no sign of stopping. Quite simply, refined sugar (particularly fructose) and carbohydrates containing white flour products, for instance, lack fibre, and therefore lead to a spike of blood glucose levels, which lead to the pancreas releasing the hormone insulin, so as to open the doors to the cells and liver to invite glucose inside so as to process them as fuel or to store as glycogen. However after many years of this, and also in the absence of sufficient physical exercise, the cells slowly become resistant to the insulin. As a result of insulin levels becoming

elevated, there is an inflammatory effect on tissues, and eventually blood sugars rise, the body stores more and more fat, and blood lipids become elevated, and the hormonal systems start becoming imbalanced. On one level, the simple solution is eating real, wholefoods, and to regularly move the body in a sustained manner. Viewing food as a sacred nurturer of the body, rather than as simply a vehicle for sensory enjoyment is another key. Moving away from a life full of addictions and instant gratifications involves connecting to oneself on a deep level. Being deeply connected at a societal level also tends to provide a level of nourishment that tends to prevent addiction to processed non-foods. not caring

es, you read that title right. You might be thinking, but this is a spiritual magazine! Aren’t we supposed to be looking for advice in being more loving? That sounds like the least loving or caring thing a person could do! Before you dismiss this spiritual teaching, think about one of your current relationships and ask, “What do I do for this person in order to prove that I care?” Do you: Always put them first? Think about them whenever they aren’t around? Make them happy or derive your happiness from theirs? Want to help them live their greatest life? Of course! You might say. At first glance, these ‘selfless’ acts seem like what we’ve always been taught about what caring for someone else looks like. As spiritual beings, it is very common to want to prove that we are loving, caring, and kind. But if you really look into this version of caring, it is not caring at all.

If you ‘always put them first,’ you are actually invalidating what would make you happy by going along with what they want. If you ‘think about them whenever they aren’t around,’ you are actually keeping yourself from being present. If you ‘try to make them happy or derive your happiness from theirs,’ you are actually dissuading yourself from the fact that happiness comes from within. If you ‘want to help them live their greatest life,’ you are actually fixing them or course-correcting their future. Does any of this seem caring to you? As a result of all this ‘caring,’ you’ve negated your happiness, kept yourself from presence, and felt overwhelmed by your constant efforts to control their lives. It doesn’t work for you, them, or anyone in the end. The solution? Welcome to the ‘art of not caring less’ about everything outside of you. This may seem radical, nonspiritual, unkind, and heartless, but give it a try anyway, and you may be

less

surprised at the freedom and self-love this process creates. Whenever you find yourself trying to prove you ‘care’ about someone or something, say to yourself: “I don’t care about that. Why would I care about that?” When you cease to ‘care’, you are actually releasing all your attachments to any outcome. This alleviates stress, disappointment, and frustration. From there, you can approach any situation with the mindset of “what would be caring for me here?” You’ll find that when you choose what is truly caring for you, it is truly caring for everyone involved. e each have the power to create habits in our long term relationships. We can build an openness of adult self-responsibility into our communication together, or resort back to old childlike ways of trying to get our needs met with destructive habits. It seems knowing when to fix something, and knowing when to listen, is a skill set that doesn’t come easily to many men. The need to understand what is going on for my wife and finding a way to fix the situation is not the wisest approach to connect with her. Understanding may be a great solution when working on a building project, but it is not always the best approach for creating a beautiful relationship between two people. An intention to connect with empathy is the key to healing any situation. Actually, a more profound way of benefitting my partner is to sit alongside her when she has difficulties.

To simply listen and not to try and fix or offer a solution. Women’s well-being (or the feminine) is not the sole responsibility of women. It must be supported by men (or the masculine) in ways that are wise and kind. This will result in happiness for all. Compassionate communication is a 100% learnable skill for all. Both men and women can learn new ways of communicating and connecting that results in peace, happiness and intimacy. To enquire what your partner is feeling and needing while staying in empathy (for yourself and her) requires quite a bit of mastery. This skill set was most likely not taught to you through school and maybe never modelled to you as you grew up. The depth in which a man can stand in any storm and be a shade tree, is always dependent on how well he knows himself. The deeper the self-connection, the

better he is able to be there for others in his life. Family Constellations and Non Violent Communication is a tried and true path to creating a loving approach with our partner. It took dedication to find a new way, and still some days, I mess it up. These messy days are just an opportunity to connect deeper and bring authenticity and vulnerability to the situation. dream of a medicine woman. Wanting to know more about her, I had hair wraps embellished with charms just like hers, put into my hair. Dread was the emotion as the wraps were inserted, prompting another dream… An Indian slave is birthing a daughter conceived through rape. Mother and daughter were medicine women whose healing medicine was herbs. The daughter was midwife to the birth of a Mongoloid baby to which, based on cultural law, she was required to administer a lethal herb. The baby died. The daughter’s anguish at the tribal law and her guilt drove her to suicide by the same herb. In the next generation of her family, a Mongoloid child was born, and depression was a cellular inheritance. It became clear any unprocessed emotion is inherited by the next generation. “How is that fair?” I ask, shaking an invisible fist at the sky. We are enslaved by the emotions from those who have gone before us. “Because”, was the reply, “so

many have so little regard for the truth and beauty of who they really are as individuals that if our emotions did not impact elsewhere, we would not try.” If we knew this; wouldn’t we all try hard? Repressing any emotion represses EVERY emotion. You cannot feel the ecstasy of orgasmic universal energy uplifting, guiding and inspiring you daily, if you are unwilling to feel fear, anger and grief. For a time, hair wraps were part of my signature. They reminded me daily; to try hard to allow unabashedly fully self-expressed, gut-wrenching, bloodcurdling emotion; and here’s what I learned. Emotions originate within the physical body because of chemical reactions produced by negative and positive beliefs formed from life experiences creating certain behaviours. There is a difference between emotion and feeling. Feeling originates outside the physical (spiritual). Feeling is a life force energy absorbed through vibration frequencies flowing through our bio-field into and around our

bodies. Our bio-chemical bodies cannot live without feeling. Emotions originate within the physical. The physical body produces chemical reactions constantly. A biochemical body is needed for emotion to be fully processed. Every time the body experiences an emotion, a pheromone is produced and emitted. Intuition reads pheromones. We have been conditioned to ignore our intuition, preferring logic to translate emotional input. Unprocessed emotions from life experiences are then trapped in the body’s cellular memory (DNA) and felt in the physical body. ‘Body Relationships Lifestyle Programs’ are built upon the premise that these experiences need to be processed as they stop us from fully connecting with feeling; consciousness. n my healing work with clients, we often connect into and communicate with the female family line – mothers, grandmothers, greatgrandmothers and so on. Often living daughters, no matter their age, are brought into the sacred healing space as an act of recognising that when we who are the mothers heal ourselves, we are also laying the groundwork for our daughters to release what they have taken on as their own, from our mostly unconscious example. It’s no coincidence that we are currently experiencing in the world an uprising against the patriarchy, and a rising of the feminine. We are also experiencing this healing within our own feminine self. A movement away from being who we as collective women have learned to be in the world, away from a world designed mostly for the masculine. Moving now toward the world of balance and equality. We must first, as women, step into

the full force of our feminine power and let go of our need to ‘fit in’ to the masculine norm. We must unlearn all that we know about women as a whole. I’m excited every single time that I see an article sharing a never-beforeknown fact about a woman who contributed greatly to the world in some way in a bygone era and I loved watching the story of the women in ‘Hidden Figures’ and their pioneering work for NASA. History is being rewritten to include HERstory. These stories that are coming to light allow us to change our perspective around what we have learned to be, what we believe we can do and so much more. We must, as women and supporters of women, ensure that we share and retell these stories with our sons and our daughters so that the whole story is being told and not just one half of the story of our collective history.

In our own personal healing journey, we must allow these stories to build our personal confidence in our ability to be and do and have all that we desire. We are no longer ‘owned’ by the masculine, a man… first our father, then our husband and then our sons. Woman is her own sovereign being, capable of birthing children and creating new worlds. Woman is not weaker than or less than her divine equal, man, just as man is not more (or less) than divine woman. Opposing forces of WORDS GAYLYN AITKEN

S

everal years ago when I was learning Kahuna Sciences from Abraham Kawai’i, I attended a geomancy workshop with him. I learnt how to sense through the responses of my body, the different frequencies that make up my immediate environment and how to adjust myself or my environment to facilitate flow or containment, depending upon the situation. This in turn deepened my understanding of the principle of motion, action and how its effects are the same within all circumstances, time and space. This elemental principle ignited within me a desire to develop a way of life that mirrored the flow, flexibility and speed of adjustment, found within nature in response to the frequencies of opposing forces. I figured it’s easier to swim with the tide than to fight against it with my concepts and belief systems. Aligned Movement grew from this desire, as I slowly but surely learnt how my body responded functionally to various situations.

Motion is life and motion is created from equal and opposing forces moving upon each other. In relation to this month’s theme of women’s well-being, I’ll focus on the opposing forces of male/female energy that not only relates to species gender but can also be found as a way of identifying and improving the function of anything. The motion of feminine energy can be identified through the senses as: cool, damp, dark, sweet, fluid, smooth, heavy, deep, inwards, measured, receptive, flexible, resilient, creative, container, nurturer. The motion of male energy is the opposite; light, heat, fast, textured, direct, projective, focused, dry, supportive, metallic, provider, rigid, strength, new ideas, birth. In balance, these two opposing forces create motion that contributes to one’s wellbeing. Sensing the qualities of male and female energies can provide insight into what’s needed

when and how much. We learn from ourselves of our self, to better manage life by lessening or increasing the harmoniously opposing forces to keep upright and moving with ease. The root of harmonious motion is communication between all the parts of being human, our body, our mind and our spirit. All are equal and different in the same measure and are kept well by being consciously aware of the qualities of motion. When I move in conscious alignment, I’m aware of how the phases of my breath move my body parts in a particular way that allows for the expansion of inhalation and the contraction of exhalation. In everyday movement, I can then sense the time to move in a particular way that will contribute to the fluid power of the movement, which when employed often enough, becomes a pattern of movement. www.kahunamist.com

ver the past month I have been blessed to be in the presence of some wonderful women. One particular event was filled with those I have had the pleasure of getting to know over my last 10 years or more in business. We have shared tears, laughter, joys, triumphs and tragedy over this time. Some of my conversations got me thinking about each of our journeys, what has transpired, what we have achieved and how we have morphed and evolved personally and in our businesses. My pondering acknowledges 8 wonderful ways of women… We tap into our intuition – when we hear that inner calling, we respond. If we resist, it persists and eventually we listen! It guides and shapes us and tells us where to go. When we follow, magic happens. We are adaptable – 10 years is a long time in the life of a woman! We transform, re-invent, and pivot

towards new horizons depending on what is placed in our path. It could be family, illness, travel, love. We adapt and respond in the moment, with the common good in mind. We are resilient – if we fall down, we usually don’t stay there for long. We look for ways to move forward positively and with purpose. We are amazing overcomers. We lift each other up – we cheer one another on and celebrate each other’s successes! We attend each other’s events, purchase products and services and shout out for one another. We are often the wind beneath one another’s wings! We are nurturing and supportive – we care about those arounds us

including family, friends, clients and community. They matter to us! If we can, we will reach out with an encouraging word, share a hug or offer to help in a practical way when it’s needed. We are networkers – whether it’s a local network where we attend face to face, or an online community. We are natural connectors and brilliant communicators when we find a likeminded tribe. We are creative – we express our creativity in different ways and it is often what makes us different and innovative. It flows through everything we do. As well as allowing us to express ourselves or our business uniquely, it keeps things interesting! We are not limited to these wonderful ways, and they ebb, flow and interplay with one another. I have grown to appreciate them more over time how they enrich our lives. Thank you to the women in my life. I see you!
